2. Re-thinking nostalgic antiquarianism: time, space, and the English reformation

Abstract

Nostalgia has long been considered central to the development of early modern English antiquarianism. In the wake of a seminal article by Margaret Aston, historians have readily identified “nostalgic” antiquarianism as a response to the iconoclasm wrought during the Protestant Reformation. Rarely, if ever, have scholars interrogated the nature of this nostalgia for the architectural and aesthetic glories of the medieval world. This article reconsiders the nostalgia of late sixteenth- and seventeenth-century antiquaries with a view to refining our understanding both of antiquarianism and the workings of nostalgia itself. It argues that, although it has long been characterised as an entirely modern phenomenon, nostalgia avant la lettre was an important mode of perceiving the past in early modern England. Inspired by ecclesiastical ruins and shaped by a complex relationship between time and space, nostalgia helped contemporaries to make sense of the divide between past and present, medieval and early modern.

Abstract

Elevated blood serotonin in perinatal development is the most consistent neurochemical finding reported in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of the disorder. Accordingly, pre- and postnatal administration of the non-selective serotonin agonist, 5-methoxytryptamine (5-MT), is hypothesized as a model of developmental hyperserotonemia (DHS) to investigate the behavioral and morphological implications in ASD. Our previous study, examining the effects of DHS, found significant neuroanatomical changes in the dendritic architecture and connectivity of neurons in the dentate nucleus of the cerebellum. The present investigation has gone further to describe alterations in the development of the dentate-thalamo-cortical pathway, a neural network involved in motor learning, automaticity of movements, and higher cognitive functions affected in ASD. Using unbiased stereological techniques, serial sections of DHS rats were compared to age-matched controls. Analysis was performed on nuclear volume, estimated cell number, area, distribution, and volume within the principle nuclei of the thalamus. While results did not show a change in the overall volume of the thalamus, when grouped by estimated total brain volume, the mean thalamic volume was significantly reduced in the DHS group relative to controls. Additionally, significant reductions in cell numbers, density and distribution were observed in subdivisions of the principle nuclei including the ventral anterior, ventral lateral, ventral posterolateral, and ventral posteromedial nuclei. Alterations in these areas and their reciprocal connections throughout the brain may effect neuronal organization and be implicated in the neuropathological and behavioral changes observed in ASD.

Abstract

This article examines an unusual piece of Reformation polemic, T. G., The friers chronicle (1623), with a view to shedding fresh light on the long literary afterlives of the dissolution of the monasteries (1536-40). Previous accounts have focussed on ruins as emblems of the rupture between past and present engendered by the dissolution. However, The friers chronicle suggests that the memory of the monasteries also resonated powerfully with Protestant anxieties about the future of the ongoing Reformation in the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, especially at moments of renewed anti-Catholic crisis. In turn, the dissolution itself contributed to a ‘long reformation’ of the chronicle genre. In this way, the paradigm of the long Reformation has the potential to illuminate the impact of the dissolution upon English literature, as well as highlighting the importance of literary sources for understanding its legacies and afterlives.

41. Evaluating a behavioral method to manage dental fear: a 2-year study of dental practices

Abstract

Fear of going to the dentist is very common; 70 percent of Americans admit to some degree of fear, while 20 percent experience extreme fear of dental procedures. This anxiety causes many people to avoid the dentist altogether, while others make appointments and then cancel them. Unfortunately, a minor dental problem may become an emergency because of such procrastination. Fearful patients are not only very uncomfortable themselves, they generate much stress for the dentist and office staff because their behavior can be difficult to manage. A program designed to treat dental fear is described. Eleven private dental offices and a university clinic offered the program to individuals who experienced fear of going to the dentist. During a period of 15 months, 111 people went through the program. Their ages ranged from 11 to 68 years, and the average time since they had last seen a dentist was four years. First, they filled out questionnaires designed to measure the severity and nature of their fears and talked with a staff member about their responses. They watched a videotape of a dentist performing a procedure on a fearful patient; the patient was able to stop the procedure and the dentist was gentle and reassuring. The participants were trained in two relaxation techniques and were given audiotapes so they could practice at home. Finally, the staff member used a technique called systematic desensitization and described scenes leading up to the dental procedure while the participants used relaxation techniques to reduce their fearful reactions. The program was effective in decreasing strong dental fears, since 77 percent of the people subsequently went through with substantial dental treatments and said that at least some parts of the program were helpful in reducing their fears. Abstract

Background Diolistic labeling is increasingly utilized in neuroscience as an efficient, reproducible method for visualization of neuronal morphology. The use of lipophilic carbocyanine dyes, combined with particle-mediated biolistic delivery allows for non-toxic fluorescent labeling of multiple neurons in both living and fixed tissue. Since first described, this labeling method has been modified to fit a variety of research goals and laboratory settings. New method Diolistic labeling has traditionally relied on commercially available devices for the propulsion of coated micro-particles into tissue sections. Recently, laboratory built biolistic devices have been developed which allow for increased availability and customization. Here, we discuss a custom biolistic device and provide a detailed protocol for its use. Results Using custom diolistic labeling we have characterized alterations in neuronal morphology of the lateral/dentate nucleus of the rat cerebellum. Comparisons were made in developing rat pups exposed to abnormally high levels of 5-methyloxytryptamine (5-MT) pre-and postnatally. Using quantitative software; dendritic morphology, architecture, and synaptic connections, were analyzed. Comparison with existing method(s) The rapid nature of custom diolistics coupled with passive diffusion of dyes and compatibility with confocal microscopy, provides an unparalleled opportunity to examine features of neuronal cells at high spatial resolution in a three-dimensional tissue environment. Conclusions While decreasing the associated costs, the laboratory-built device also overcomes many of the obstacles associated with traditional morphological labeling, to allow for reliable and reproducible neuronal labeling. The versatility of this method allows for its adaptation to a variety of laboratory settings and neuroscience related research goals.
