La educación en programación informática ha experimentado una transformación radical en los últimos años. Esta evolución ha llevado a la reevaluación de las estrategias pedagógicas tradicionales en favor de enfoques más centrados en el estudiante y orientados hacia el desarrollo de habilidades prácticas. En este contexto dinámico y en constante cambio, la práctica de fomentar el aprendizaje activo y el desarrollo de habilidades en materias de programación mediante proyectos individuales se ha destacado como una estrategia no solo altamente efectiva, sino también esencial para preparar a los estudiantes para los desafíos de la era digital. En este contexto de cambio constante, el enfoque en la realización de proyectos individuales se destaca como una estrategia pedagógica que no solo satisface las necesidades actuales de la industria, sino que también apoya a que los estudiantes asuman un papel activo en su propio aprendizaje (Rubio-Sánchez et al., 2014). A través de proyectos individuales, los estudiantes se sumergen en el mundo de la programación de manera práctica y significativa, lo que les permite aplicar los conceptos teóricos en un contexto real y experimentar los desafíos de la creación de software funcional y soluciones innovadoras. Este capítulo se centrará en explorar a fondo la práctica de fomentar el aprendizaje activo y el desarrollo de habilidades en programación mediante proyectos individuales. Analizaremos cómo esta metodología pedagógica no solo promueve la adquisición de habilidades técnicas, sino también la autonomía, la creatividad y la resolución de problemas, que son habilidades cruciales para el éxito en la industria tecnológica y en la vida cotidiana. El canvi climàtic ha preocupat la població des de fa anys, i per això s'han realitzat objectius de desenvolupament sostenible per combatre'l, com és l'Agenda 2030. Un dels factors que agreugen aquest problema és la crema de combustibles fòssils, al qual tota la població contribueix mitjançant el transport i els viatges que cada dia es fan. Per això, moltes universitats han apostat per fer plans d'estratègies que ajuden al desenvolupament sostenible. En aquest cas, un dels diversos objectius de la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya és encaminar-se a una mobilitat sostenible. Així doncs, es va dur a terme l'enquesta de mobilitat realitzada pel Gabinet d'Innovació i Comunitat el curs 2021/2022, de la qual es va obtenir una partició del 41,6%. Aquest treball té per finalitat explicar la situació actual que suposa la mobilitat dels diferents campus i les recomanacions disponibles. Això s'ha fet mitjançant la contextualització de diferents universitats i guies de càlcul d'emissions, l'anàlisi de dades de l'enquesta i la recomanació de propostes; juntament amb l’ús de programes com Excel i Google maps, entre altres. La situació actual és determinada per la facilitat d'accés a cada campus i l'accessibilitat que es té a cada transport. En este caso, uno de los varios objetivos de la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya es encaminarse a una movilidad sostenible. Así pues se llevó a cabo la encuesta de movilidad realizada por el Gabinete de Innovación y Comunidad en el curso 2021/2022, de la cual se obtuvo una partición del 41,6%. El presente trabajo tiene por finalidad explicar la situación actual que supone la movilidad de los diferentes campus y las recomendaciones disponibles. Esto se ha ejecutado mediante la contextualización de diferentes universidades y guías de cálculo de emisiones, el análisis de datos de la encuesta y la recomendación de propuestas; junto con el uso de programas como Excel y Google maps, entre otros. La situación actual es determinada por la facilidad de acceso a cada campus y la accesibilidad que se tiene a cada transporte. Finalmente se espera que la concienciación, junto con las recomendaciones de mejora, podamos encaminarnos a la ecomovilidad., Climate change has been of concern to the public for years, which is why sustainable development goals have been set to combat it, such as the 2030 Agenda. One of the factors that aggravate this problem is the burning of fossil fuels, to which the entire population contributes through transport and daily travel. For this reason, many universities have committed themselves to developing strategies that help sustainable development. In this case, one of the various aims of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya is to move towards sustainable mobility. Therefore, a mobility survey was carried out by the Innovation and Community Office in the 2021/2022 academic year, from which a 41.6% share was obtained. The present work aims to explain the current situation of mobility on the different campuses and the available recommendations. This has been executed by contextualising different universities and emission calculation guides, analysing survey data and recommending proposals; together with the use of programmes such as Excel and Google maps, among others. The current situation is determined by the ease of access to each campus and the accessibility of each transport. Finally, it is hoped that by raising awareness, together with recommendations for improvement, we can move towards eco-mobility.

Buena Pinta Cave (Pinilla del Valle, Madrid) has been interpreted as a hyena den with sporadic occupations of Homo neanderthalensis in the western part of the site (level 23). In order to identify the different formation processes in this area of the site, spatial analyses have been carried out with GIS and spatial statistics based on the taphonomic analysis of the faunal remains. Based on the vertical and sectional analyses of the assemblage, it has been possible to determine that level 23 actually corresponds to three archaeological levels with well-differentiated characteristics: a lower level with few faunal remains and fossil-diagenetic alterations related to humid environments associated with clays; an intermediate level with a high percentage of remains with water-related modifications and evidences of transport; and an upper level delimited mainly thanks to by a paraconformity evidenced by the concentration of weathered remains in this area and a significant reduction in remains with water-related alterations above. Sepsis is a life-threatening condition whose early recognition is key to improving outcomes for patients in intensive care units (ICUs). Artificial intelligence can play a crucial role in mining and exploiting health data for sepsis prediction. However, progress in this field has been impeded by a lack of comparability across studies. Some studies do not provide code, and each study independently processes a dataset with large numbers of missing values. Here, we present a comparative analysis of early sepsis prediction in the ICU by using machine learning (ML) algorithms and provide open-source code to the community to support future work. We reviewed the literature and conducted two phases of experiments. In the first phase, we analyzed five imputation strategies for handling missing data in a clinical dataset (which is often sampled irregularly and requires hand-crafted preprocessing steps). We used the MIMIC-III dataset, which includes more than 5,800 ICU hospital admissions from 2001 to 2012. In the second phase, we conducted an extensive experimental study using five ML methods and five popular deep learning models. We evaluated the performance of the methods by using the area under the precision-recall curve, a standard metric for clinical contexts. The deep learning methods (TCN and LSTM) outperformed the other methods, particularly in early detection tasks more than 4 hours before sepsis onset. The motivation for this work was to provide a benchmark framework for future research, thus enabling advancements in this field.

This work examines the possible behaviour of Neanderthal groups at the Cueva Des-Cubierta (central Spain) via the analysis of the latter’s archaeological assemblage. Alongside evidence of Mousterian lithic industry, Level 3 of the cave infll was found to contain an assemblage of mammalian bone remains dominated by the crania of large ungulates, some associated with small hearths. The scarcity of post-cranial elements, teeth, mandibles and maxillae, along with evidence of anthropogenic modifcation of the crania (cut and percussion marks), indicates that the carcasses of the corresponding animals were initially processed outside the cave, and the crania were later brought inside. A second round of processing then took place, possibly related to the removal of the brain. The continued presence of crania throughout Level 3 indicates that this behaviour was recurrent during this level’s formation. This behaviour seems to have no subsistence-related purpose but to be more symbolic in its intent.

Spatial analysis has been much used to examine the distribution of archaeological remains at Pleistocene sites. However, little is known about the distribution patterns at sites identified as hunting camps, i.e., places occupied over multiple short periods for the capture of animals later transported to a base camp. The present work examines a Neanderthal hunting camp (the Navalmaíllo Rock Shelter in Pinilla del Valle, Madrid, Spain) to determine whether different activities were undertaken in different areas of the site. A spatial pattern was detected with a main cluster of materials (lithic tools, faunal remains, and coprolites) clearly related to the presence of nearby hearths—the backbone of the utilised space. This main cluster appears to have been related to collaborative and repetitive activities undertaken by the hunting parties that used the site. Spatial analysis also detected a small, isolated area perhaps related to carcasses processing at some point in time and another slightly altered by water.

The quality of university teaching is essential for the success of students and the academic excellence of an educational institution. The purpose of this work is to provide a methodology based on the Association Rule technique using the Apriori algorithm to analyze the results obtained from the student evaluation process regarding their satisfaction with the teaching received. This methodology has been applied in programming courses of students of several courses both in the Computer Engineering and Health Engineering degrees at University of Seville, Spain. The proposed methodology can serve as a starting point for a self-improvement process that clearly identifies strengths and weaknesses.

A día de hoy nos encontramos ante un nuevo paradigma que está revolucionando completamente la forma en la que vemos las cosas. Este nuevo paradigma surge ante el gran volumen de datos que se generan mediante multitud de dispositivos conectados entre sí y la necesidad de obtener conocimiento a partir de toda esta información. El auge de las tecnologías y la gran capacidad de computación de la que disponemos a día de hoy ha hecho posible que términos como ciencia de datos, minería de datos, inteligencia artificial o aprendizaje automático hayan cobrado mucha importancia en la sociedad actual. Todos estos términos tienen en común un factor, y es el de extraer conocimiento a partir de los datos. El aprendizaje automático es un tipo de inteligencia artificial que proporciona a las máquinas de computación la capacidad de aprender sin ser programadas explícitamente para llegar a ese conocimiento. Este aprendizaje puede verse desde 2 puntos de vista diferentes según si los datos están etiquetados previamente o no. Si los datos de partida están etiquetados se denomina aprendizaje supervisado, y si no están etiquetados se pasa a llamar aprendizaje no supervisado. El aprendizaje supervisado trata de encontrar una función capaz de explicar los datos de entrenamiento. Esta función trata de buscar relaciones que asocie entradas con salidas a partir de un conjunto de datos etiquetados, es decir, cuyas entradas y salidas son conocidas. Dependiendo del objetivo a predecir, hablamos de clasificación, si el atributo es categórico o de regresión, si el atributo es numérico. En el caso de los problemas de clasificación, la mayoría de algoritmos y modelos desarrollados hasta el momento no tienen en cuenta una posible relación de orden entre las distintas etiquetas cuando realmente sí lo hay. The generation of synthetic data is becoming a fundamental task in the daily life of any organization due to the new protection data laws that are emerging. Because of the rise in the use of Artificial Intelligence, one of the most recent proposals to address this problem is the use of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). These types of networks have demonstrated a great capacity to create synthetic data with very good performance. The goal of synthetic data generation is to create data that will perform similarly to the original dataset for many analysis tasks, such as classification. The problem of GANs is that in a classification problem, GANs do not take class labels into account when generating new data, it is treated as any other attribute. This research work has focused on the creation of new synthetic data from datasets with different characteristics with a Conditional Generative Adversarial Network (CGAN). CGANs are an extension of GANs where the class label is taken into account when the new data is generated. The performance of our results has been measured in two different ways: firstly, by comparing the results obtained with classification algorithms, both in the original datasets and in the data generated; secondly, by checking that the correlation between the original data and those generated is minimal.

The number of representative samples to build a calibration model plays a major role in the success of chemometric models for class discrimination; therefore, knowing which samples should be used for the calibration of prediction models is essential. The aim of this work is to design a basic guideline for the training of partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) models to classify complex samples analysed by Gas Chromatography (GC) coupled to Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS) using dry-cured Iberian ham as an example. The effect of the number, proportion and class of samples for training and validation and the use of two data types (spectral fingerprint or pre-selected markers) has been assessed by analysing with GC-IMS nearly 1000 dry-cured Iberian ham samples obtained from 7 different curing plants. Subsequently, these were classified with PLS-DA according to the pig’s feeding regime (acorn-fed vs. feed-fed) and it has been demonstrated that 450 out of 997 samples are enough for model training to achieve a maximum average prediction accuracy rate. Furthermore, the use of preselected GC-IMS markers provides slightly better prediction results than the use of the complete spectral fingerprint. In summary, these results represent a tentative guide for the classification of samples in an industrial setting using GC-IMS and PLS-DA. This methodology would allow authorities and producers to ensure the quality of the agri-food products put on the market as is proven in this study
