Abstract

Marine organisms are currently experiencing an unprecedented rate of climatic warming, which affects their biogeography and threatens marine ecosystem integrity. To understand how benthic species will respond to ongoing seawater warming, we assessed the relative importance of processes acting at different scales using an individual-based modelling approach. Our model integrates: (1) at the individual scale, interactions between the environment, metabolism and ontogenic transitions; (2) at the habitat scale, competition for space at settlement and mortality; and (3) at the regional scale, larval dispersal and connectivity between habitats. We focused on a coastal area in the North-East Atlantic that has experienced a significant seawater warming trend over recent decades. We built and ran a population dynamics model for the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) in this area, which is a known biogeographic boundary zone. We then compared the response for a reference scenario and a RCP8.5 temperature projection for 2100. We found that (1) increase in seawater temperature would result in a decrease in average biomass associated with a change in recruitment phenology; (2) response to seawater warming is not spatially homogeneous, showing the importance of processes at the habitat scale; (3) connectivity clearly limits the consequences of warming compared with other regulation processes; and (4) larval supply does not seem to be a limiting factor regulating population biomass. The use of such generic models would therefore be very valuable for guiding and optimizing research efforts and supporting the implementation of management and conservation measures.

Abstract

The continental coastal waters of the Eastern Channel, from Normandy to Hauts-de-France, are subject to the major influence of unbalanced nutrient inputs from inflowing rivers. Several episodes of harmful algal blooms (HABs) compromising fishing and shellfish farming activities have been observed at the coast. For a better understanding of how the land-to-sea aquatic continuum functions, the GRAFS-RIVERSTRAHLER river biogeochemical model was implemented to cover the watersheds of 11 rivers flowing into this area (including the Seine) and chained with the ecological marine ECO-MARS3D model, applied to the French Northern coastal zone. Human activities strongly impact on the functioning of coastal ecosystems. Specifically, for these fertile soils of Northern France, intensive agricultural nitrogen (N) deliveries in excess over silica (Si) and phosphorus (P), essentially of diffuse origin, are potentially responsible for coastal eutrophication. Phosphorous is today equally supplied by diffuse and point sources, after a drastic reduction of inputs from wastewater treatment plants since the 2000s, and is better balanced regarding Si, as shown by the indicators of coastal eutrophication potential (P-ICEP versus N-ICEP). However, despite this drastic P reduction, HABs still appear repeatedly. Exploration of several scenarios of agro-food chain reorganization shows that (i) further progress in urban wastewater treatment to fully comply with current European regulations will not result in a significant reduction of nutrient fluxes to the sea, hence including HABs, and (ii) radical structural changes in agriculture, based on generalization of long and diversified organic crop rotations, reconnection of crop and livestock farming and changes in the human diet have the capacity to significantly reduce nutrient flows, coastal eutrophication and HABs

Abstract

L’eutrophisation touche de nombreux lacs, réservoirs, rivières et zones côtières, en France et dans le monde. Elle génère des perturbations majeures pour les écosystèmes aquatiques et a des impacts sur les biens et les services associés, sur la santé humaine et sur les activités économiques. Dans certains espaces, elle est devenue une question socialement vive. Les débats sur l’identification des facteurs et des niveaux de risque d’eutrophisation, permettant d’orienter les politiques publiques, ont conduit les ministères en charge de l’environnement et de l’agriculture à confier au CNRS, à l’Ifremer, à l’INRA et à Irstea la réalisation d’une Expertise scientifique collective (ESCo) sur le sujet. Cette ESCo établit un état des lieux critique sur les connaissances scientifiques disponibles au plan international sur les causes, les mécanismes, les conséquences et la prédictibilité des phénomènes d’eutrophisation. Elle identifie les notions considérées comme certaines et celles encore entachées d’incertitudes, les lacunes, les questions faisant l’objet de controverses scientifiques, ainsi que les leviers d’action existants pour endiguer l’eutrophisation.

Abstract

Dans le cadre du plan Algues vertes mis en place en 2010 par le gouvernement, un comité scientifique a été constitué pour en valider les principales orientations. Ce comité scientifique Algues vertes (CSAV) a analysé dans un premier temps le cahier des charges de l’appel à propositions, puis examiné chacun des huit plans d’actions territoriaux qui ont été proposés par les périmètres concernés et définis au Schéma directeur d’aménagement et de gestion des eaux du bassin Loire-Bretagne (SDAGE 2010-2015).La présence d’un comité scientifique en appui à une décision politique proposant une démarche de concertation territorialisée, ainsi que les échanges entre le comité et les porteurs de projet sont des expériences relativement inédites. Il nous paraît donc intéressant d’analyser l’interaction entre les scientifiques et le processus d’élaboration des projets et de synthétiser les avis rendus sur ces projets. Certains des membres du comité ont souhaité réaliser cette analyse qui se décompose en quatre parties. Dans un premier temps, on analysera comment la logique rationnelle et scientifique « objectifs-actions » se heurte à des logiques socioculturelles des acteurs de terrain, puis comment ces logiques et jeux d’acteurs condamnent les projets à n’avoir qu’une portée limitée. On montreraensuite comment le CSAV a tenté de ne pas se poser en scientifique censeur et à garder la plus grande objectivité possible et comment il a apporté des expertises qui ont permis certaines évolutions. Enfin on rappellera comment le travail a permis d’identifier des dynamiques positives et de tracer des voies d’actions plus efficaces.

Abstract

The north-American marine gastropod Crepidula fornicata (Linné 1758), commonly called slipper limpet, has been introduced accidentally in Great Britain, along with American oysters ( Crassostrea virginica ) at the end of the 19th century. Its spreading, enhanced by oyster transport and international shipping, turned into invasion of a lot of benthic grounds along the North-European coasts. When local conditions are favorable to larval confinement and adult growth, the invasion by very dense populations may deeply change initially sandy or muddy benthic communities into similar “slipper limpet communities”. Competition for space eliminates several species of native infauna, and hampers the survival of some epibenthic bivalves such as the scallop Pecten maximus . As the clogging of dredges by superabundant slipper limpets drastically limits scallop fishing, some insight in the future distribution and abundance of both species ( Crepidula and Pecten ) seems necessary, especially in the English Channel where the scallop is intensively harvested. An original model, storing in a “intraspecific matching matrix” the numbers of pairs of aged animals present in the slipper limpet chains, has been developed to take into account the year-class association and stack formation specific to Crepidula fornicata. Then, an “interspecific matching matrix” component has been added to that “intraspecific matching matrix” in order to describe the simple year-class structure of the scallop along with the age distribution of slipper limpets stuck on scallop shells and forming the base of chains. Such a model can explore the dynamics of both populations at a secular time scale. This first part of work details the 0D-behavior of the populations, alone or together, on 1 m 2 benthic area. As far as the scallop is concerned, the fact that class 1 cannot recruit in dense populations until the death of old animals has freed some place induces a limit-cycle, with a 11 years period, and a large amplitude. On the contrary, in the case of the slipper limpet, because of the constant possibility for class 1 to recruit on the top of existing colonies, even if the bottom coverage is total, the population reaches a stable steady state abundance, without significant oscillations. Competition for space between the two species does not alter significantly the slipper limpet, whereas it lowers the mean abundance and alters (by damping and slowing down) the limit cycle of the scallop. This eutrophication exhibits two main forms :– “green tides”, which are constituted by local proliferations and strandings of green macro-algae (particularly the Ulva species) in nitrogen-enriched areas.– phytoplanktonic blooms, which are responsible of coloured water events. Toxic species can be present (Pseudonitzschia, Alexandrium, Dinophysis), and induce banning of shellfish consumption.Several programs and directives compel authorities to initiate actions in order to diminish these problems. (WFD, OSPAR). This implies a better understanding of these phenomena.This work deals with the influences of the plumes of Loire, Vilaine and bay of Brest rivers (Elorn and Aulne) on the nitrate enrichment of the French Brittany coastal shelf. A 3D hydrodynamic model, MARS 3D, is used. The nitrate is considered as a conservative tracer, which is advected and dispersed by the model. Thanks to the introduction of 4 different tracers, we can distinctively follow the nitrate from Loire, Vilaine, Bay of Brest rivers and other rivers.The study shows that the Loire river influences the southern and western parts of coastal shelf of Brittany. The plume propagates up to the north of Iroise sea, and contributes for a large part to its enrichment. On the other hand, the high enrichment of the bay of Brest remains confined and is smoothly dispersed in Iroise sea, except during flood events : in this case, nitrate jets are pulsed into the Iroise sea.

Abstract

A three dimensional (3D) ecological model is developed and applied to the "baie de Seine" area. It consists of a 3D model for hydrodynamics and port (SiAM3D) coupled to an ecological model simulating nutrient cycles (nitrogen, phosphorus, silicon) and two phytoplanktonic classes (diatoms and flagellates). The model is validated by confronting simulations with nine year long series of measurements and then used to better understand the ecosystem functioning. It especially allows to show the role of the proportion of silicon with regard to nitrogen and phosphorus in the summer loadings of the Seine river on the more or less strong presence of flagellates in the river plume. The model was also used to test various hypotheses of reduction of nitrogen loading from the Seine river and their consequences on the phytoplanktonic production in the plume., Une modélisation écologique tri-dimensionelle (3D) a été développée en baie de Seine. Elle est constituée d'un modèle 3D hydrosédimentaire (SiAM3D) couplé à un modèle écologique simulant le cycle des éléments nutritifs (azote, phosphore, silicium) et deux classes phytoplanctoniques (diatomées et flagellés). Après validation par confrontation des simulations avec neuf années de mesures, le modèle a été utilisé afin de mieux comprendre le fonctionnement de l'écosystème. II a notamment permis de montrer le rôle de la proportion de silice par rapport à l'azote et au phosphore dans les apports estivaux de la Seine sur la présence plus ou moins forte de flagellés dans le panache du fleuve. Le modèle a également été utilisé pour tester différentes hypothèses de réduction des apports d'azote par la Seine et leurs conséquences sur la production phytoplanctonique dans le panache.
