1. High-yield fabrication of bubble-free magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene devices with high twist-angle homogeneity

Abstract

Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) stands as one of the most versatile materials in condensed-matter physics due to its hosting of a wide variety of exotic phases while also offering convenient tunability. However, the fabrication of MATBG is still manual, and remains to be a challenging and inefficient process, with devices being highly dependent on specific fabrication methods, that often result in inconsistency and variability. In this work, we present an optimized protocol for the fabrication of MATBG samples, for which we use deterministic graphene anchoring to stabilize the twist-angle, and a careful bubble removal techniques to ensure a high twist-angle homogeneity. We use low-temperature transport experiments to extract the average twist-angle between pairs of leads. We find that up to 38 percent of the so fabricated devices show micrometer square sized regions with a twist-angle in the range 1.1 plus/minus 0.1 degrees, and a twist-angle variation of only 0.02 degrees, where in some instances such regions were up to 36 micrometer square large. We are certain that the discussed protocols can be directly transferred to non-graphene materials, and will be useful for the growing field of moire materials.

Abstract

The simultaneous co-existence and gate-tuneability of the superconducting (SC), magnetic and topological orders in magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) open up entirely new possibilities for the creation of complex hybrid Josephson junctions (JJ). Here we report on the creation of gate-defined, magnetic Josephson junctions in MATBG, where the weak link is gate-tuned close to the correlated state at a moir\'e filling factor of {\nu}=-2. A highly unconventional Fraunhofer pattern emerges, which is phase-shifted and asymmetric with respect to the current and magnetic field directions, and shows a pronounced magnetic hysteresis. Interestingly, our theoretical calculations of the JJ with a valley polarized {\nu}=-2 with orbital magnetization as the weak link explain most of these unconventional features without fine tuning the parameters. While these unconventional Josephson effects persist up to the critical temperature Tc ~ 3.5K of the superconducting state, at temperatures below T < 800mK, we observed a pronounced magnetic hysteresis possibly due to further spin-polarization of the {\nu}=-2 state. We demonstrate how the combination of magnetization and its current induced magnetization switching in the MATBG JJ allows us to realize a programmable zero field superconducting diode, which represents a major building block for a new generation of superconducting quantum electronics.

Abstract

The discovery of magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG), in which two sheets of monolayer graphene are precisely stacked at a specific angle, has opened up a plethora of grand new opportunities in the field of topology, superconductivity, strange metal, and other strongly correlated effects. This review will focus on the various forms of quantum phases in MATBG revealed through quantum transport measurements. The goal is to highlight the uniqueness and current understanding of the various phases, especially how electronic interaction plays a role in them, as well as open questions in regard to the phase diagram. Abstract

Fractional charges can be induced by magnetic fluxes at the interface between a topological insulator (TI) and a type-II superconductor due to axion electrodynamics. In a Josephson junction array with a hole in the middle, these electronic states can have phase interference in an applied magnetic field with period, in addition to the 2π interference of the Cooper pairs. Here, we test an experimental configuration for probing the fractional charge and report the observation of phase interference effect in superconducting arrays with a hole in the middle in both Au- and TI-based devices. Our numerical simulations based on resistive shunted capacitive junction model are in good agreement with the experimental results. However, no clear sign of an axion charge-related interference effect was observed. We will discuss possible reasons and perspectives for future experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In December 2016, the Zaragoza City Council organised an international seminar on Cities for Agroecology. This event marked the start of two parallel processes of city networking, at European and national level. The Milan Urban Food Policy Pact World Mayor’s meeting in Valencia (October 2017) represents an important milestone in the consolidation of agroecological approaches in sustainable urban food policies as both networks are advancing fast.

19. Identification of chickpea cultivars by microsatellite markers.

Abstract

Characterization of plant varieties is traditionally based on phenotypic observation. However, some varieties have very similar morphological characteristics, which make it difficult to distinguish between them. The present study employed 15 microsatellite markers distributed across all linkage groups (LG) of the chickpea genetic map to characterize 32 commercial chickpea cultivars and determine the usefulness of these markers for cultivar identification. These markers showed a high level of polymorphism; a total of 154 different alleles were detected, with a mean of 10·3 alleles per locus. The polymorphic information content (PIC) value ranged from 0·455 to 0·897. All the markers, with the exception of TA130, TA135 and TA144, were considered to be informative (PIC>0·7), indicating their potential usefulness for cultivar identification. A subset of markers (TA186, TA200, TA106, TA113, TA117 and TA30) was sufficient to identify all the cultivars studied. In order to confirm their discriminatory power, 16 unreleased chickpea cultivars (V1–V16) were screened and all of them presented different patterns. Therefore, these microsatellites can be regarded as a reference set for chickpea cultivar identification and their profiles can be used as a DNA fingerprint for each registered cultivar, avoiding redundancy of identical cultivars as well as to protect breeders' rights. Abstract

Continuing with previous works, we study the chemical and mineralogical characteristics of four types of calcareous liassic rocks (calcarenites, laminated limiestones, lump limestones and calcareous marls), on which are developed the forest soils of the Grazalema Reserva (Cadiz, Spain). In all of these are present calcite, quartz and mida, although in different proportions. Moreover, dolomite, is found in the calcarenites and the lump limestones, kaolinite in the laminated and lump limestones and, finally, smectites in the marls.Continuando con trabajos anteriores, se estudian las características químicas y mineralógicas de cuatro tipos de rocas liásicas calcáreas (calcarenitas, calizas tableadas, calizas masivas y margas), sobre las que se desarrollan suelos forestales de la Reserva de Grazalema (Cádiz, España). En todas ellas se presentan calcita, cuarzo y mica, aunque en distintas proporciones. Además, existe dolomita en las calizas masivas y calcarenitas, caolinita en las calizas tableadas y masivas y, por último, esmectitas en las margas.

Abstract

Stingless bees (Apidae, Meliponini) are key pollinators in natural and agricultural Pantropical environments. Current human activities, however, threaten their populations, making it urgent to assess their abundance and genetic status. By a population genetics approach, we calculated the genetic diversity and estimated the number of wild colonies of two stingless bee species, Trigona nigerrima (Cresson) and T. corvina (Cockerell) in southern Mexico. Allele richness ranged from 10 to 19 (mean ± SD = 14 ± 3.5) for both species. Expected heterozygosity ranged 0.88-0.93 for T. corvina and 0.82-0.92 for T. nigerrima. The estimated number of colonies estimated was 25 on average for T. corvina and 21 for T. nigerrima. According to our results populations of both species seem not to be in danger. We also show that genetic tools can be extremely useful for colony density estimation for stingless bees as it is for bumble bees and honey bees. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

29. Enhance Wine Production Potential by Using Fresh and Dried Red Grape and Blueberry Mixtures with Different Yeast Strains for Fermentation.

Abstract

Red grapes and blueberries are known for their high content of bioactive compounds and antioxidant properties. In Mediterranean winemaking, traditional sun-drying can be replaced by controlled-airflow-chamber-drying, which provides better quality, higher phenolic content, and increased antioxidants. This study aimed to increase the sugar content and phenolic compounds of the must by drying the fruits to fifty per cent of their original moisture content. Two musts were prepared: the first one was prepared by combining fresh red grapes and dried blueberries ( M 1 ), while the other was created using dried red grapes and fresh blueberries ( M 2 ), followed by fermentation at 25 °C with M05 Mead and X5 yeast strains. The M 2 must showed the highest levels of phenolic compounds, red color (A520), total anthocyanins, and antioxidant activity. During fermentation, the anthocyanin content increased mainly in the dried blueberry macerates, where it increased between 4- to 5.5-fold. More bioactive compounds were extracted from the wines produced using yeast inoculation despite the shorter maceration times. A sensory analysis demonstrated consumers' acceptance of the wines in terms of color, flavor, and aroma. In conclusion, the use of red grapes in the production of blueberry red wine proved to be effective, providing higher sugar and must yields, while the dried fruits improved the fermentable sugar content obtaining wines with an alcoholic content between 10 and 11% ( v / v ). The higher levels of bioactive compounds increased the antioxidant capacity of the resulting red fruit wines.

Abstract

With the aim of obtaining a map which is useful as a diagnostic tool and therapeutical orientation, complementing the written report of duplex ultrasound venous study, Latin-American Scientific Societies of Phlebology, Vascular Surgery and Vascular Imaging were invited to participate, through their regional representatives, to the First Consensus of Superficial and Perforating Venous Mapping. A consensus process using a modified Delphi method was carried out. An International Working Group was formed, which developed a Prototype of the Venous Mapping that worked as a starting point for consensus, and was presented in a first virtual meeting of 54 experts (societies' representatives) when the methodology was explained. For the consensus process, two rounds of self-administrated questionnaires with feedback were used. In the first questionnaire a 100% consensus was obtained in the 15 statements (an agreement range of 85.2% to 100%) In the analysis of qualitative data, three categories according to the actions to implement were identified - actions which involved no action, minor changes and major changes. This analysis was used to build the second questionnaire, which reached a consensus in its six statements (agreement range of 87.1% to 98.1%). A final consensus on every field proposed was established with the approval of all the experts consulted and it was presented at a third online meeting. The document of the superficial and perforating venous mapping reached by consensus is presented hereafter.

Abstract

Flavonoid compounds, including anthocyanins and flavan-3-ol derivatives, total tannins, total vitamin C and resveratrol were analyzed by HPLC in blueberry fruits, their skin and pulp, as well as in wines produced from them. Two wines were elaborated, with different times of fermentation. The fruit analysis provided information on the distribution of bioactive compounds in the berries, showing that the skin had the highest concentrations of all compounds. The winemaking process needed a maceration stage to extract these compounds from skins to wine. This maceration process increased the concentration of all compounds and the antioxidant activity values measured by the DPPH assay, but long maceration times decreased the compounds and the antioxidant activity, due to the phenolic compounds that were involved in several reactions, such as polymerization, copigmentation, degradation, formation of pyranoanthocyanins and reactions between anthocyanins and tannins. The sensorial analysis of wines showed that partial fermentation wine had better characteristics than total fermentation wine, although both wines had a high acidity.

32. Phase interference for probing topological fractional charge in a BiSbTeSe 2 -based Josephson junction array.

Abstract

Fractional charges can be induced by magnetic fluxes at the interface between a topological insulator (TI) and a type-II superconductor due to axion electrodynamics. In a Josephson junction array with a hole in the middle, these electronic states can have phase interference in an applied magnetic field with4×2πperiod, in addition to the 2 π interference of the Cooper pairs. Here, we test an experimental configuration for probing the fractional charge and report the observation of phase interference effect in superconducting arrays with a hole in the middle in both Au- and TI-based devices. Our numerical simulations based on resistive shunted capacitive junction model are in good agreement with the experimental results. However, no clear sign of an axion charge-related interference effect was observed. We will discuss possible reasons and perspectives for future experiments., (Creative Commons Attribution license.)

Abstract

Background: Drying is one of the traditional methods used for the conservation of fruits. In recent years, different methods have been developed to obtain higher quality products. Chamber-drying methods with hot air at controlled temperature are reliable and easy to use. The effect of piercing the structure of grape berries on their drying time was studied experimentally during convective drying within a temperature range of 30-50 °C. Experimental moisture loss results were fitted to different mathematical models, evaluated for goodness of fit by comparing their respective R 2 , χ 2 , and root mean square error., Results: The Midilli et al. model provided a better prediction to describe the drying of whole grapes than the other models evaluated. However, punched grapes showed a better fit for the two-term model at 30 and 40 °C, and the approximation of diffusion model at 50 °C. The values of effective moisture diffusivity fluctuated between 8.04 × 10 -12 and 7.31 × 10 -11  m 2  s -1 . Activation energy was 56.49 and 54.43 kJ mol -1 for whole and punched grapes, respectively. All the drying processes produced an increase of total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity in grapes, these increases being higher in whole grape drying., Conclusion: The drying of punched grapes was faster and the activation energy higher than with drying of whole grapes; however, whole grapes presented more total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry., (© 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.)

Abstract

Introduction: Phonological analysis is a system for assessing children's speech that was introduced by Ingram in 1976. Despite being acknowledged as one of the essential elements for understanding speech therapy intervention in speech disorders, it is not a wholly generalised practice due to the difficulties involved and the shortage of standardised instruments for performing it., Development: Here, we examine the impact of phonological analysis on speech therapy intervention and the history of the instruments that have been developed over the years to perform it, both in English and in Spanish. The basic procedure for carrying out this kind of analysis is explained and we also present a software application that allows it to be performed automatically., Conclusions: We recommend making phonological analysis to assess children with language disorders a more widespread practice and also increasing the planning of adequate intervention programmes.

Introduction: A careful analysis of the mistakes made by children with learning disabilities in writing reveals a number of qualitatively distinct errors, each of which is directly related to one of the fundamental processes underlying the ability to spell correctly, that is to say, perceptive-linguistic, metalinguistic, operative memory and long-term memory processes, among others. The objective of this study is to describe our proposal for a methodology for treating children with orthography learning difficulties that takes these processes into account., Development: A thorough analysis of the orthographic mistakes and their semiological classification is taken as our starting point, and we then put forward a sequence of instruction for each kind of error that tackles the deficient psycholinguistic processes, offsets the weaker points of the processing with the stronger points, and aims to get the child to learn a large number of words, thus favouring the metacognitive and self-regulatory processes applied to writing., Conclusions: Teaching pupils with dyslexic and dysorthographic problems to spell and write correctly entails important methodological difficulties. In our clinical practice we have attempted to develop teaching processes that fit the semiological characteristics of the spelling errors by trying to modify both the pupil's actual academic performance and the psycholinguistic processes that underlie such errors.

Introduction: Verbal dyspraxia is a specific developmental language disorder that is characterised by a deficit at different levels of speech processing: in phonological planning, in phonetic planning and in the implementation of the speech motor programme., Development: In this study we review the criteria for differential diagnosis, the tests that are useful to achieve this and the possible lines of speech therapy treatment.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to present a survey of speech therapy intervention in phonological disorders (PD). We will examine the concepts of normal phonological development and those involved in PD in order to understand how they have been dealt with, historically, in speech therapy intervention. Lastly, we will describe how evaluation and intervention are carried out from the speech processing paradigm. Phonetic phonological skills allow people to decode the phonic strings they hear so as to be able to gain access to their phonological form and meaning. These abilities also enable them to encode these strings from lexical representations to pronounce words. The greater part of their development takes place during approximately the first four years of life. Speech processing difficulties affect the phonetic phonological skills and occur throughout almost all language pathologies, although the effect they exert is not always the same. This can range from a lack of the capacity to speak to important problems of intelligibility or mild problems with certain phonemes. Their influence on learning to read and write has been shown in recent decades. Speech therapy intervention began from a model based on articulatory phonetics. In the 70s a linguistic model based on the process of speech simplification and phonological analysis was added and this gave rise to a marked improvement in the systems used for evaluation and intervention. At present we have assumed a psycholinguistic model that links the perceptive skills with productive ones and top-down or bottom-up processing (from lexical representations to perception or production of phonemes and vice-versa).

Abstract

In order to evaluate clinically and spirometrically the efficacy and safety of clenbuterol in comparison with terbutaline and placebo, 30 pediatric patients, in three groups of ten subjects each one, were studied. The study was designed single blind with control group (placebo), randomized, prospective and observational. Total average age was 8.2 years, weight 29 kg and size 130 cm. Nineteen subjects were male and 11 female. Group I received clenbuterol (0.0012 mg/kg/day) solution bid during one week; group II received terbutaline (0.075 mg/kg/day) solution tid and group III, placebo. There were differences statistically significant in the group treated with clenbuterol in FEV1, PMF and VC. Side effects were without importance.
