Abstract

The simulation of a biomass combustion system includes many sub-models to account the different processes that are taking place, such as fluid dynamics, homogeneous reactions, pollutant formation, heat transfer and biomass drying, devolatilization, and char oxidation. This work is focused on the simulation and the analysis of a commercial 60 kW biomass boiler with special focus on the treatment of the bed, species mixing and reaction, temperatures in the combustion chamber and heat exchange processes. A complete methodology has been developed and several physical and chemical models have been applied. The fuel is modeled as a group of gas species calculated from the real biomass analysis data. Fuel bed and gas phase have been calculated separately and a continuous coupling has been made in order to allow a complete interaction between them., Proceedings of the 18th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition, 3-7 May 2010, Lyon, France, pp. 1327-1331

38. Viability of LPG use in low-power outboard engines for reduction in consumption and pollutant emissions

Abstract

This study presents the viability of the use of liquified petroleum gases (LPG) dosage systems in order to solve the fuel supply in four-stroke outboard engines in compliance with regulations concerning emissions of immediate application pollutants. Results obtained show an important decrease in specific fuel consumption (nearly 20%) provoking a small power loss (about 5%), with an extra saving when making use of bottled fuel, which does not suffer spills in the bunkers and maintenance operations. Laboratory tests have been carried out on 8 and 15 HP Yamaha outboard engines, obtaining reductions in pollutants (CO, HC and NOx) of 60% and of 95% for each power, respectively. These trials have been contrasted with tests carried out in the Vigo estuary and the river Miño waterways, both located in the South of Galicia (Spain). © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract

Abstract: Hardening heat-treatment is an important operation in the fabrication of large chains for both the shipping industry and anchorage of offshore oil-platforms. This paper presents the outcome of an investigation that led to the introduction of modifications in a hardening furnace resulting in a substantial improvement and largely eliminating the problem of gradual cooling of the chain before immersion in the water-quenching tank. Comparing this with the present operating conditions, it can be concluded that redirecting the gas flow increases the gas temperature in the lower part of the furnace, which changes the chain’s temperature-distribution accordingly. Abstract

Abstract: Containerised cogeneration sets, CCSs, are an efficient answer for remote developing regions which do not have alternative energy sources and for those applications requiring mobility and the quick installation of energy plants. Nevertheless, CCSs can present over-heating problems as a result of inefficient ventilation. The heat dissipated by each of the 28 elements under consideration in the engine compartment was assessed, together with the mass flow rate of air supplied to the cab and the air temperature at the inlet and outlet. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model has been developed that allows for simulation of the parameters of velocity, temperature and pressure and for calculating the heat flows in a CCS with a reciprocating diesel engine, with an alternator power of 903kW. Predictions from this model have been contrasted with the experimental data obtained in a series of measurements. The CFD model has been used to analyse possible alternatives for improving the ventilation system. Besides the use of insulation to reduce the heat dissipated, other alternatives have been studied: e.g., improving the airflow by fitting a metal sheet as a deflector, or using a third fan. Of the three alternatives analysed, the company has decided to incorporate the simplest and cheapest, consisting in fitting a metal sheet around the alternator. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
