Abstract In numerous carbonate reservoirs in the Middle East, peloidal packstone‐grainstones are rock types with excellent pore storage potential in micritised microporous grains. However, the origin of the micro‐porosity and associated micro‐spar remains unclear, and one hypothesis is that both micro‐spar and porosity originate from early marine micritisation and were later altered during subsequent diagenesis (i.e. cementation recrystallisation). The south‐eastern coast of the Arabian Gulf is recognised as a modern, albeit miniature, depositional setting analogue to Mesozoic carbonate sequences that form the supergiant reservoirs of the Middle East. Using optical microscopy, backscattered scanning electron microscopy and carbon and oxygen stable isotope analysis the present study aims to document the nature of internal microstructures of micritic envelopes and peloids from the surface sediments of various sub‐environments of the Abu Dhabi Lagoon. Results highlight a high degree of diversity and heterogeneities of most micritic envelopes and peloids observed across the sub‐environments. First, carbonate grains from ooid and bioclastic shoals show the simpler micritic envelopes. Here, micritic envelopes and peloids show sparse microborings filled with banded radial aragonite cement, a pattern of production of cryptocrystalline texture (e.g. micritisation) that is similar to the sequence of micritisation observed in the modern sediment of the Great Bahama Bank. Conversely, in the subtidal and intertidal zones with mangroves or seagrass, the micritic envelopes and peloids are much more complex and show multiple generations of microborings that are either empty or filled with carbonate materials of varying types (i.e. various cements, fragments, etc.).

Abstract Background Biological invasions pose risks to the normal functioning of ecosystems by altering the structure and composition of several communities. Molluscs stand out as an extensively studied group given their long history of introduction by either natural or anthropogenic dispersal events. An alien population of the lymnaeid species Orientogalba viridis was first sighted in 2009 in southern Spain. In its native range (Australasian), this species is one of the main intermediate hosts of Fasciola hepatica, a major worldwide trematode parasite largely affecting humans, domestic animals and wildlife. Methods We collected field populations of O. viridis from its native (Malaysia) and invaded (Spain) ranges. We performed detailed morphoanatomical drawings of the species and screened for natural infection of parasites. Individuals were molecularly characterized using ITS2 for comparison with existing sequences in a fine phylogeography study. We founded experimental populations at two different conditions (tropical, 26 °C and temperate, 21 °C) to study the life-history traits of exposed and non-exposed individuals to different F. hepatica isolates. Results We found a 9% natural prevalence of trematode infection (98% similarity with a sequence of Hypoderaeum conoideum [Echinostomatidae]) in the Spanish field population. The haplotypes of O. viridis found in our study from Spain clustered with Australian haplotypes. Experimental infection with F. hepatica was successful in both experimental conditions but higher in tropical (87% prevalence) than in temperate (73%). Overall lifespan, however, was higher in temperate conditions (mean 32.5 ± 7.4 weeks versus 23.3 ± 6.5) and survivorship remained above 70% during the first 20 weeks. In parasite-exposed populations, life expectancy dropped from an overall 37.75 weeks to 11.35 weeks but still doubled the time for initial cercariae shedding. Cercariae shedding started at day 23 post-exposure and peaked between days 53 and 67 with an average of 106 metacercariae per snail. Conclusions Whether O. viridis will succeed in Europe is unknown, but the odds are for a scenario in which a major snail host of F. hepatica occupy all available habitats of potential transmission foci, ravelling the epidemiology of fasciolosis. This research provides a comprehensive understanding of O. viridis biology, interactions with parasites and potential implications for disease transmission dynamics, offering valuable insights for further research and surveillance. Nowadays, consumer society is increasingly concerned about the environment and the foods production systems. Viable and efficient technologies that target a sustainable production are being developed in order to reduce the generation of agri-food residues, introducing them on the market on the basis of the so-called circular economy. In parallel, consumers are becoming more health conscious, demanding safe and natural products through the use of natural additives and ingredients. This study evaluated the stability of sliced ​​100% Iberian Spanish salchichón without added additives. It was wrapped in a biodegradable nanocellulose films incorporating olive leaf extract, then vacuum-packaged and stored at 5 and 25ᴼC for 90 days. The antimicrobial activity on lactic acid, aerobic mesophilic bacteria and Enterobacteriaceae was studied, as well as the evolution of lipid oxidation through the TBARS method. Significant differences were found between control and test sample during the evaluation of antimicrobial (aerobic mesophilic bacteria) and antioxidant activity at 25 °C. However, no significant differences were found during the evaluation of either antimicrobial or antioxidant activity at 5 °C. Olive leaf extract has a recognized antimicrobial and antioxidant activity tested in vitro; however, when tested in vivo and incorporated into a film, further refinements are needed to optimize the composite film and to obtain the desired effects of the extract as food preservative.

Abstract Secondary minerals in lava tubes on Earth provide valuable insight into subsurface processes and the preservation of biosignatures on Mars. Inside lava tubes near the Hawaii-Space Exploration and Analog Simulation (HI-SEAS) habitat on the northeast flank of Mauna Loa, Hawaii, a variety of secondary deposits with distinct morphologies were observed consisting of mainly sodium sulphate powders, gypsum crystalline crusts, and small coralloid speleothems that comprise opal and calcite layers. These secondary deposits formed as a result of hydrological processes shortly after the formation and cooling of the lava tubes and are preserved over long periods of time in relatively dry conditions. The coralloid speleothem layers are likely related to wet and dry periods in which opal and calcite precipitates in cycles. Potential biosignatures seem to have been preserved in the form of porous stromatolite-like layers within the coralloid speleothems. Similar secondary deposits and lava tubes have been observed abundantly on the Martian surface suggesting similar formation mechanisms compared to this study. The origin of secondary minerals from tholeiitic basalts together with potential evidence for microbial processes make the lava tubes near HI-SEAS a relevant analog for Martian surface and subsurface environments.

HEV antibody detection constitutes the main screening test for HEV infection. The aim of this study is to compare the sensitivity and specificity of four techniques: LIAISON® MUREX DiaSorin anti-HEV IgG and anti-HEV IgM assays, Hepatitis E VIRCLIA® IgM and IgG monotests, WANTAI HEV-IgM and IgG ELISA and VIDAS® anti-HEV IgM and IgG tests in five panels of samples configurated according to the immunoblot (RecomLine, Mikrogen, Neuss, Germany). Anti-HEV IgM sensitivity in the acute phase was 100% in all techniques, while sensitivity, including the immediate convalescence phase, was 96.74% for LIAISON®, 83.14% for VIRCLIA®, 84.78% for WANTAI and 88.04% for VIDAS®. Anti-HEV IgM specificity was 100% for both LIAISON® and VIRCLIA®. Anti-HEV IgM WANTAI agreed with VIRCLIA® with a good Kappa coefficient (κ = 0.71). Anti-HEV IgG post-infection sensitivity was 100% for LIAISON®, VIDAS® and VIRCLIA® and 99% for WANTAI. Anti-HEV IgG specificity reached 97.17% for LIAISON and 88.68% for VIRCLIA®. Our results demonstrated a better capacity of LIAISON® MUREX anti-HEV IgM than that of competitors for detecting acute infections as well as accurate anti-HEV IgG results and in how to resolve them.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) prophylactic vaccination has proven effective in preventing new infections, but it does not treat existing HPV infections or associated diseases. Hence, there is still an important reservoir of HPV in adults, as vaccination programs are mainly focused on young women. The primary objective of this non-randomized, open-label trial is to evaluate if a 3-dose regimen of Gardasil-9 in HPV16/18-positive women could reduce the infective capacity of their body fluids. We aim to assess if vaccine-induced antibodies could neutralize virions present in the mucosa, thus preventing the release of infective particles and HPV transmission to sexual partners. As our main endpoint, the E1^E4-HaCaT model will be used to assess the infectivity rate of cervical, anal and oral samples, obtained from women before and after vaccination. HPV DNA positivity, virion production, seroconversion, and the presence of antibodies in the exudates, will be evaluated to attribute infectivity reduction to vaccination. Our study will recruit two different cohorts (RIFT-HPV1 and RIFT-HPV2) of non-vaccinated adult women. RIFT-HPV1 will include subjects with an HPV16/18 positive cervical test and no apparent cervical lesions or cervical lesions eligible for conservative treatment. RIFT-HPV2 will include subjects with an HPV16/18 positive anal test and no apparent anal lesions or anal lesions eligible for conservative treatment, as well as women with an HPV16/18 positive cervical test and HPV-associated vulvar lesions. Subjects complying with inclusion criteria for both cohorts will be recruited to the main cohort, RIFT-HPV1. Three doses of Gardasil-9 will be administered intramuscularly at visit 1 (0 months), visit 2 (2 months) and visit 3 (6 months). Even though prophylactic HPV vaccines would not eliminate a pre-existing infection, our results will determine if HPV vaccination could be considered as a new complementary strategy to prevent HPV-associated diseases by reducing viral spread. IntroductionThe high recombinogenic potential of HIV-1 has resulted in the generation of countless unique recombinant forms (URFs) and around 120 reported circulating recombinant forms (CRFs). Here we identify through analyses of near full-length genomes (NFLG) a new HIV-1 CRF derived from subtypes B and F1.MethodsHIV-1 protease-reverse transcriptase (Pr-RT) sequences were obtained by RT-PCR amplification from plasma RNA. Near full-length genome sequences were obtained after amplification by RT-PCR in 5 overlapping fragments. Phylogenetic sequence analyses were performed via maximum likelihood. Mosaic structures were analyzed by bootscanning and phylogenetic analyses of genome segments. Temporal and geographical estimations of clade emergence were performed with a Bayesian coalescent method.ResultsThrough phylogenetic analyses of HIV-1 Pr-RT sequences obtained by us from samples collected in Spain and downloaded from databases, we identified a BF1 recombinant cluster segregating from previously reported CRFs comprising 52 viruses, most from Brazil (n = 26), Spain (n = 11), and Italy (n = 9). The analyses of NFLG genomes of 4 viruses of the cluster, 2 from Spain and 2 from Italy, allowed to identify a new CRF, designated CRF75_BF1, which exhibits a complex mosaic structure with 20 breakpoints. All 4 patients harboring CRF75_BF1 viruses studied by us had CD4+ T-cell lymphocyte counts below 220/mm3 less than one year after diagnosis, a proportion significantly higher (p = 0.0074) than the 29% found in other patients studied in Spain by us during the same period. The origin of the clade comprising CRF75_BF1 and related viruses was estimated around 1984 in Brazil, with subsequent introduction of CRF75_BF1 in Italy around 1992, and migration from Italy to Spain around 1999.ConclusionA new HIV-1 CRF, designated CRF75_BF1, has been identified. CRF75_BF1 is the 6th CRF of South American origin initially identified in Western Europe, reflecting the increasing relationship of South American and European HIV-1 epidemics. The finding of low CD4+ T-cell lymphocyte counts early after diagnosis in patients harboring CRF75_BF1 viruses warrants further investigation on the virulence of this variant.

Systems modeling offers a valuable tool to support strategic decision-making for complex problems because it considers the causal inter-relationships that drive population health outcomes. This tool can be used to simulate policies and initiatives to determine which combinations are likely to deliver the greatest impacts and returns on investment. Systems modeling benefits from participatory approaches where a multidisciplinary stakeholder group actively engages in mapping and contextualizing causal mechanisms driving complex system behaviors. Such approaches can have significant advantages, including that they may improve connection and coordination of the network of stakeholders operating across the system; however, these are often observed in practice as colloquial anecdotes and seldom formally assessed. We used a basic social network analysis to explore the impact on the configuration of the network of mental health providers, decision-makers, and other stakeholders in Bogota, Colombia active in a series of three workshops throughout 2021 and 2022. Overall, our analysis suggests that the participatory process of the systems dynamics exercise impacts the social network’s structure, relationships, and dynamics.

Este comunicado trata de la pedagogía contemporánea como disciplina filosófica de la antropogenia y la educación en un contexto crítico con un especial énfasis en el Plan único de especializaciones en curriculum y formación docente que se configura con cinco programas específicos, como posgrados universitarios. Para el Plan único se ideo, diseñó, planeó, ejecutó y evaluó un programa de formación docente con un Congreso organizado por los alumnos como su evento recepcional. Presentamos las principales adversidades y sus soluciones posibles y deseables en tiempos de pandemia Covid 19. Concluimos con una síntesis razonada.

Abstract Lacustrine non‐skeletal carbonates exhibit a diversity of petrographies due to interactions between physico‐chemical and biologically influenced mechanisms. Despite the suggestion that evaporative concentration was involved in the formation of spherulite and shrubby‐bearing carbonate successions in the Pre‐Salt Cretaceous alkaline lakes of the South Atlantic, no consensus exists about the water chemistries promoting these exotic mineral textures. In this work, an experimental approach was developed to evaluate how changes in salinity (NaCl) and biopolymer concentrations (alginic acid) impact calcite growth dynamics from saline and alkaline synthetic solutions. Hydrochemical and petrographical data from selected modern saline/alkaline environments were compared with experimental datasets to further estimate how the underlying (bio)chemical conditions and lake locations probably converge to allow the formation of calcite spherulite grains in evaporitic settings. Spherulitic calcite from Recent saline lakes and experiments arise from waters with moderate to high [Calcium]/[Alkalinity] ratios ([Ca]/[Alk]) rather than in calcium‐depleted and alkaline‐rich environments which tend to produce single‐crystal calcites during abiotic water mixing or lake evaporation. This observation is consistent with the assembly of polycrystalline textures being a kinetically controlled feature, forced by remarkably high rates of nucleation. Also, the data analysed do not support a causative relationship between evaporite‐driven salinity fluctuations and the preferential formation of spherulites, shrubs or their intermediate textures. Ubiquitous in saline lakes, organic substances can lower the kinetic thresholds for spherulitic calcite aggregation while microbial photosynthesis can also raise pH, altogether enhancing calcite supersaturation and promoting spherulite formation in waters with moderate‐high [Ca]/[Alk] ratios and high salinities. Localised observations of abiotic spherulites in Recent soda lakes can occur in restricted mixing zones where [Ca]/[Alk] ratios are enhanced. This work highlights the roles of concentration regimes associated with biopolymers and microbial metabolism against the background salinity fluctuations in determining the morphological and textural transitions in lacustrine carbonate minerals.

Antecedentes: Los receptores de trasplante de órgano sólido (RTOS) parecen estar en un riesgo particularmente alto de cuadros severos de infección por coronavirus 2 del síndrome respiratorio agudo grave (SARS-CoV-2) debido al uso crónico de medicamentos inmunosupresores y sus comorbilidades. Reportamos la primera descripción del curso clínico y desenlaces a corto plazo de los receptores de trasplante con enfermedad por coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) confirmada en México. El objetivo de este trabajo es evaluar el curso clínico de estos pacientes. Material y métodos: Evaluamos de manera retrospectiva los RTOS (riñón e hígado) mayores de 18 años de edad, con diagnóstico confirmado de infección por SARS-CoV-2 provenientes de cinco centros de tercer nivel en México. Resultados: Se incluyeron 45 receptores de trasplante renal con una edad de 43 (intervalo intercuartílico [IQR]: 25-70) años. El ingreso hospitalario se requirió en 37 (75.5%) pacientes, de los cuales ocho (16.3%) fueron hospitalizados en la unidad de terapia intensiva. Se documentó lesión renal aguda en 33 (67%) pacientes. El tiempo de hospitalización fue de 8 (IQR: 6-12) días. Seis pacientes fallecieron (12.2%). Adicionalmente, 10 receptores de trasplante hepático fueron incluidos. Durante su evolución, 5 / 10 requirieron ingreso hospitalario; no se presentaron fallecimientos en este grupo de pacientes. Conclusiones: Los receptores de trasplante mostraron una alta tasa de mortalidad y complicaciones por la infección por SARS-CoV-2. Son necesarios más estudios para identificar los factores pronósticos y modalidades de tratamiento eficaces.

Well-characterized and standardized extracts of a Mexican genotype of Ganoderma lucidum (Gl), a medicinal mushroom, cultivated on oak sawdust (Gl-1) or oak sawdust plus acetylsalicylic acid (Gl-2, ASA), have been shown to exert antioxidant, hypocholesterolemic, anti-inflammatory, prebiotic, and anticancer properties. However, toxicity analyses still need to be carried out. Different doses of these Gl-1 or Gl-2 extracts were administered to Wistar rats for 14 days in a repeated dose oral toxicity study. We assessed the external clinical signs, biochemical parameters, liver and kidney tissues, injury and inflammation biomarkers, gene expression, inflammatory responses, proinflammatory mediators, and gut microbiota. Gl extracts had no significant adverse, toxic or harmful effects on male and female rats compared to the control groups. No injury or dysfunction were recorded in the kidney or liver, as there were no significant abnormal variations in organ weight, tissue histopathology, serum biochemical parameters (C-reactive protein, creatinine, urea, glucose, ALT and AST transaminases, TC, LDL-c, TG, HDL-c), urinary parameters (creatinine, urea nitrogen, albumin, the albumin-to-creatinine ratio, glucose), injury and inflammatory biomarkers (KIM-1/TIM-1, TLR4, and NF-кB protein expression; IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-6 gene expression), or the expression of genes linked to cholesterol metabolism (HMG-CoA, Srebp2, Ldlr). Gl-1 and Gl-2 extracts showed prebiotic effects on the gut microbiota of male and female Wistar rats. Bacterial diversity and relative bacterial abundance (BRA) increased, positively modulating the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio. The ASA (10 mM) added to the substrate used for mushroom cultivation changed properties and effects of the Gl-2 extract on Wistar rats. The no-observed-adverse-effect-level (NOAEL) was 1000 mg/kg body weight/day of Gl-1 or Gl-2 extracts. Clinical trials are recommended for further exploring the potential therapeutic applications of studied extracts.

Este artículo analiza la adaptación cinematográfica de la novela 59 Degrees and Raining: The Story of Perdita Durango de Álex la Iglesia, contextualizando la literatura de Barry Gifford, su imaginario cinematográfico, su relación con la industria y con otros directores. Se consideran los referentes sobre los que se sistematiza el argumento del libro y su adaptación, así como los nexos, influencias y omisiones en los que se fundamenta el trasvase. El trabajo concluye con la correlación postmodernista de ambos relatos, en los que se articula la cita como una rememoración de la imagen cinematográfica en el imaginario colectivo.

The banana is a tropical fruit characterized by its composition of healthy and nutritional compounds. This fruit is part of traditional Ecuadorian gastronomy, being consumed in a wide variety of ways. In this context, unripe Red Dacca banana samples and those submitted to different traditional Ecuadorian heating treatments (boiling, roasting, and baking) were evaluated to profile their phenolic content by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS) and the antioxidant activity by ORAC, ABTS, and DPPH assays. A total of sixty-eight phenolic compounds were identified or tentatively identified in raw banana and treated samples, highlighting the content in flavonoids (flavan-3-ols with 88.33% and flavonols with 3.24%) followed by the hydroxybenzoic acid family (5.44%) in raw banana samples. The total phenolic compound content significantly decreased for all the elaborations evaluated, specifically from 442.12 mg/100 g DW in fresh bananas to 338.60 mg/100 g DW in boiled (23.41%), 243.63 mg/100 g DW in roasted (44.90%), and 109.85 mg/100 g DW in baked samples (75.15%). Flavan-3-ols and flavonols were the phenolic groups most affected by the heating treatments, while flavanones and hydroxybenzoic acids showed higher stability against the heating treatments, especially the boiled and roasted samples. In general, the decrease in phenolic compounds corresponded with a decline in antioxidant activity, evaluated by different methods, especially in baked samples. The results obtained from PCA studies confirmed that the impact of heating on the composition of some phenolic compounds was different depending on the technique used. In general, the heating processes applied to the banana samples induced phytochemical modifications. Even so, they remain an important source of bioactive compounds for consumers.

Abstract Circulating recombinant forms (CRFs) contribute substantially to the HIV-1 pandemic. Among 105 CRFs described in the literature, 16 are BF intersubtype recombinants, most of South American origin, of which CRF12_BF is the most widely spread. A BF recombinant cluster identified in Bolivia was suggested to represent a new CRF_BF. Here we find that it belongs to a larger cluster incorporating 39 viruses collected in 7 countries from 3 continents, 22 of them in Spain, most from Bolivian or Peruvian individuals, and 12 in South America (Bolivia, Argentina, and Peru). This BF cluster comprises three major subclusters, two associated with Bolivian and one with Peruvian individuals. Near full-length genome sequence analyses of nine viruses, collected in Spain, Bolivia, and Peru, revealed coincident BF mosaic structures, with 13 breakpoints, 6 and 7 of which coincided with CRF12_BF and CRF17_BF, respectively. In a phylogenetic tree, they grouped in a clade closely related to these CRFs, and more distantly to CRF38_BF and CRF44_BF, all circulating in South America. These results allowed to identify a new HIV-1 CRF, designated CRF89_BF. Through phylodynamic analyses, CRF89_BF emergence was estimated in Bolivia around 1986. CRF89_BF is the fifth CRF member of the HIV-1 recombinant family related to CRF12_BF.

Dry-cured tuna is a traditional product manufactured in the Mediterranean region of Spain, known as mojama. The traditional salting-drying elaboration process attributes new organoleptic characteristics to the final product, changing its flavor, color, and nutritional value. This study aimed to evaluate the changes in physicochemical, biochemical, and microbiological parameters taking place during the process. The physicochemical parameters were affected by the processing steps (salting, salt-washing, and drying), except for total acidity and pH. The water activity value and relative moisture percentage decreased to 0.86 and 33.03%, respectively. Moreover, the addition of salt and the drying step increased the water-holding capacity. The lipid oxidation values increased from raw tuna loins to the final product (1.37 vs. 5.56 mg malondialdehyde/kg). Moreover, the total volatile basic nitrogen values increased in the final product, fundamentally due to the concentration effect caused by the water loss, although may also be due to the degradation of proteins during processing. The microbiological analysis showed that the values obtained in the dry-cured tuna were below the limits established by the reference regulation for dry-cured fish products.

Circulating recombinant forms (CRFs) are important components of the HIV-1 pandemic. Those derived from recombination between subtype B and subsubtype F1, with 18 reported, most of them of South American origin, are among the most diverse. In this study, we identified a HIV-1 BF1 recombinant cluster that is expanding in Spain, transmitted mainly via heterosexual contact, which, analyzed in near full-length genomes in four viruses, exhibited a coincident BF1 mosaic structure, with 12 breakpoints, that fully coincided with that of two viruses (10BR_MG003 and 10BR_MG005) from Brazil, previously classified as CRF72_BF1. The three remaining Brazilian viruses (10BR_MG002, 10BR_MG004, and 10BR_MG008) previously identified as CRF72_BF1 exhibited mosaic structures highly similar, but not identical, to that of the Spanish viruses and to 10BR_MG003 and 10BR_MG005, with discrepant subtypes in two short genome segments, located in pol and gp120env. Based on these results, we propose that the five viruses from Brazil previously identified as CRF72_BF1 actually belong to two closely related CRFs, one comprising 10BR_MG002, 10BR_MG004, and 10BR_MG008, which keep their CRF72_BF1 designation, and the other, designated CRF122_BF1, comprising 10BR_MG003, 10BR_MG005, and the viruses of the identified Spanish cluster. Three other BF1 recombinant genomes, two from Brazil and one from Italy, previously identified as unique recombinant forms, were classified as CRF72_BF1. CRF122_BF1, but not CRF72_BF1, was associated with protease L89M substitution, which was reported to contribute to antiretroviral drug resistance. Phylodynamic analyses estimate the emergence of CRF122_BF1 in Brazil around 1987. Given their close phylogenetic relationship and similar structures, the grouping of CRF72_BF1 and CRF122_BF1 in a CRF family is proposed.

CRF47_BF is a circulating recombinant form (CRF) of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), the etiological agent of AIDS. CRF47_BF represents one of 19 CRFx_BFs and has a geographic focus in Spain, where it was first identified in 2010. Since its discovery, CRF47_BF has expanded considerably in Spain, predominantly through heterosexual contact (∼56% of the infections). Little is known, however, about the origin and diversity of this CRF or its epidemiological correlates, as very few samples have been available so far. This study conducts a phylogenetic analysis with representatives of all CRFx_BF sequence types along with HIV-1 M Group subtypes to validate that the CRF47_BF sequences share a unique evolutionary history. The CRFx_BF sequences cluster into a single, not well supported, clade that includes their dominant parent subtypes (B and F). This clade also includes subtype D and excludes sub-subtype F2. However, the CRF47_BF sequences all share a most recent common ancestor. Further analysis of this clade couples CRF47_BF protease-reverse transcriptase sequences and epidemiological data from an additional 87 samples collected throughout Spain, as well as additional CRF47_BF database sequences from Brazil and Spain to investigate the origin and phylodynamics of CRF47_BF. The Spanish region with the highest proportion of CRF47_BF samples in the data set was the Basque Country (43.7%) with Navarre next highest at 19.5%. We include in our analysis epidemiological data on host sex, mode of transmission, time of collection, and geographic region. The phylodynamic analysis indicates that CRF47_BF originated in Brazil around 1999–2000 and spread to Spain from Brazil in 2002–2003. The virus spread rapidly throughout Spain with an increase in population size from 2011 to 2015 and leveling off more recently. Three strongly supported clusters associated with Spanish regions (Basque Country, Navarre, and Aragon), together comprising 60.8% of the Spanish samples, were identified, one of which was also associated with transmission among men who have sex with men. The expansion in Spain of CRF47_BF, together with that of other CRFs and subtype variants of South American origin, previously reported, reflects the increasing relationship between the South American and European HIV-1 epidemics.

Quercus ilex leaf constitute a rich source of bioactive compounds, especially phenolic compounds, with health and technological properties. In this study, the influence of in vitro gastrointestinal digestion on the bioaccessibility and bioactivity of phenolic compounds from ground leaf (GL) and leaf powder extract (PE) was evaluated for the first time. The GL showed an increase in antioxidant capacity, total phenolic content and individual phenolic compounds identified in the oral and gastric phase, decreasing in the intestinal and absorption (dialysis) phases, while PE showed a slight decrease in the oral and gastric phase and a more pronounced reduction in the last phases. Although the content of phenolic compounds and the antioxidant capacity were higher in the initial PE, the bioaccessibility (55.27% in GL vs. 34.23% in PE) and the recovery in the last step of the gastrointestinal tract in the colon-available fraction (29.24% in GL vs. 27.90% in PE) were higher in GL. The PE showed high antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella Typhimurium, Yersinia enterocolitica and Staphylococcus aureus, showing minimum inhibitory concentration values between 1 and 5 mg/mL. These results showed the complexity and richness of Q. ilex PE and GL in phenolics with high antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, underlining their use as a source of biofunctional compounds for the development of novel food additives and nutraceuticals.

Resumen: Objetivo: Evaluar si el vendaje de 2 capas es más efectivo que el vendaje de crepé en la cicatrización de úlceras venosas tras 12 semanas de seguimiento. Diseño: Ensayo clínico aleatorizado multicéntrico. Emplazamiento: 22 Centros de Salud de Madrid. Participantes: Mayores de 18 años, con diagnóstico de úlceras venosas. Se aleatorizaron 93 pacientes, 56 en el grupo de doble capa y 37 en crepé. Retiradas: 16 en el grupo de doble capa y 7 en el de crepé. Intervenciones: Grupo control: práctica clínica habitual: tratamiento de la herida y vendaje con crepé. Grupo experimental: misma práctica habitual para tratamiento de la herida y vendaje con doble capa. Mediciones principales: Variable respuesta principal: cicatrización completa a las 12 semanas. Variables secundarias: severidad de las lesiones, calidad de vida, reacciones adversas. Evaluación ciega de la variable respuesta. Resultados: Cicatrización completa: 25 (67%) en el grupo crepé (IC al 95% 50,2-81,9) y 32 (57,1%) en doble capa (IC al 95% 43,2-70,3). Sin diferencias en ambos grupos, RR = 1,10 (IC al 95% 0,864-1,424).La severidad de las úlceras basales se asocia al tiempo de cicatrización, HR = 0,86 (IC al 95% 0,78-0,94).Se objetiva mejora significativa en la calidad de vida total y en las dimensiones cosmesis y estado emocional. No se encuentran diferencias según el vendaje utilizado.Sin reacciones adversas graves en ninguno de los grupos. Conclusiones: No encontramos diferencias significativas en la cicatrización entre los 2 tipos de vendaje. Ambos son apropiados para la cicatrización de las úlceras y para mejorar la calidad de vida. Abstract: Objective: To evaluate if the two-layer bandage is more effective than the crepe bandage in the healing of venous ulcers after 12 weeks of follow-up. Design: Randomized multicentre controlled clinical trial. Location: 22 Primary Health Centers of Madrid. Participants: Over 18 years old, with diagnosis of venous ulcers. 93 patients were randomized, 56 in the double layer group and 37 in the crepe group. Withdrawals: 16 in double layer group, 7 in crepe group. Interventions: Control group: usual clinical practice: treatment of the wound and bandage with crepe. Experimental group: same usual clinical practice for wound treatment and bandage with double layer. Main measurements: Primary outcome: complete healing at 12 weeks. Secondary outcomes: severity of ulceration, health-related quality of life, adverse events. Blind evaluation of the response variable. Results: Complete healing: in crepe group, 25, 67.5% (95% CI 50.2-81.9) and in double layer group, 32, 57.1% (95% CI 43.2-70.3). No evidence of a difference in both groups, RR = 1.10 (95% CI 0.864-1.424).The basal severity of the ulcers is associated with the healing time. HR = 0.86 (95% CI 0.78-0.94).Our data showed a significant improvement in health-related quality of life, total and in the of cosmesis and emotional dimensions. No evidence of a difference in both groups.We didn’t find serious adverse events in any of the groups. Conclusions: We didn’t find significant differences in the healing between the two bandages evaluated. Both are appropriate for ulcer healing and to improve the health-related quality of life.

Viruses of HIV-1-infected individuals whose transmission is related group phylogenetically in transmission clusters (TCs). The study of the phylogenetic relations of these viruses and the factors associated with these individuals is essential to analyze the HIV-1 epidemic. In this study, we examine the role of TCs in the epidemiology of HIV-1 infection in Galicia and the Basque County, two regions of northern Spain. A total of 1,158 HIV-1-infected patients from both regions with new diagnoses (NDs) in 2013–2018 were included in the study. Partial HIV-1 pol sequences were analyzed phylogenetically by approximately maximum-likelihood with FastTree 2. In this analysis, 10,687 additional sequences from samples from HIV-1-infected individuals collected in Spain in 1999–2019 were also included to assign TC membership and to determine TCs’ sizes. TCs were defined as those which included viruses from ≥4 individuals, at least 50% of them Spaniards, and with ≥0.95 Shimodaira-Hasegawa-like node support in the phylogenetic tree. Factors associated to TCs were evaluated using odds ratios (OR) and their 95% CI. Fifty-one percent of NDs grouped in 162 TCs. Male patients (OR: 2.6; 95% CI: 1.5–4.7) and men having sex with men (MSM; OR: 2.1; 95% CI: 1.4–3.2) had higher odds of belonging to a TC compared to female and heterosexual patients, respectively. Individuals from Latin America (OR: 0.3; 95% CI: 0.2–0.4), North Africa (OR: 0.4; 95% CI: 0.2–1.0), and especially Sub-Saharan Africa (OR: 0.02; 95% CI: 0.003–0.2) were inversely associated to belonging to TCs compared to native Spaniards. Our results show that TCs are important components of the HIV-1 epidemics in the two Spanish regions studied, where transmission between MSM is predominant. The majority of migrants were infected with viruses not belonging to TCs that expand in Spain. Molecular epidemiology is essential to identify local peculiarities of HIV-1 propagation. The early detection of TCs and prevention of their expansion, implementing effective control measures, could reduce HIV-1 infections.

Propuesta de un modelo de regresión múltiple, para identificar las capacidades tecnológicas que influyen en la Competitividad de las MYPES de los municipios de Tepic y Xalisco del estado de Nayarit, realizado durante el año 2020. El estudio tiene un enfoque cuantitativo, exploratorio y transversal, las variables independientes del modelo: Proveedores Innovación, Uso de Tecnología en procesos productivos, Métodos de información, Respaldo de información, Innovación – Productos; el modelo resulta con r2 = 0.146 sin embargo no es significativo estadísticamente, se concluye que se debe agregar la variable: Uso de Tecnología en procesos productivos. Abstract A proposal of a multiple regression model was made to identify technological skills which influence competitiveness in MSEs from the municipalities of Tepic and Xalisco, Nayarity State, developed in 2020. The research has a quantitative, exploratory and cross-sectional focus, the independent variables of said model are: innovation suppliers, the use of technology within production processes, information methods, information back-up, innovation-products; the model results with r2= 0.146; however, it is not statistically significant; it is concluded that the variable: Use of technology in production processes, should be added.

Background: There is increasing evidence that gut microbiota in offspring is derived in part from maternal environment such as diet. Thus, sweeteners intake including caloric or non-caloric during perinatal period can induce gut dysbiosis and program the offspring to develop cognitive problems later in life.Objective: To determine the effect of maternal high-sweeteners intake during gestation and lactation on gut microbiota shifts in adult male offspring rats and the impact on cognitive dysfunction.Methods: Thirty-four male pups from dams fed standard diet (Control-C, n = 10), high-sucrose diet (HS-C, n = 11), high-honey diet (Ho-C, n = 8), and high-stevia diet (HSt-C, n = 5) were fed standard diet after weaning, and body weight and food intake were recorded once a week for 26 weeks. Learning and memory tests were performed at week 23 of life using the Barnes maze. Fecal samples from the breastfeeding and adulthood periods were collected and analyzed by sequencing the 16S rRNA V3-V4 region of gut microbiota.Results: Maternal high-sucrose and stevia diets programmed the male offspring, and changes in microbial diversity by Shannon index were observed after weaning (p < 0.01). Furthermore, maternal high-stevia diet programming lasted into adulthood. The increase of Firmicutes abundance and the decrease in phylum Bacteroidetes were significant in HS-C and HSt-C groups. This led to an increase in the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes index, although only in HS-C group was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Of note, the downstream gram-negative Bacteroidales and the upregulation of the gram-positive Clostridiales abundance contribute to cognitive dysfunction.Conclusion: These results suggest that dams fed a high-sucrose and stevia diets during gestation and lactation favor a deficient memory performance in adult male offspring rats through shifts gut microbiota diversity and relative abundance at several taxa.

Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) is one of the most widely consumed edible seeds in the world affected by on-farm processing. This study investigated the effect of different drying techniques, namely oven drying (OD), sun drying (SD), and a modification of sun drying using black plastic sheeting (SBPD), on the volatile profile of fine-flavor and bulk cocoa varieties analyzed by HS-SPME-GC-MS. A total of sixty-four volatile compounds were identified in fresh and dried cocoa. As expected, the volatile profile was clearly modified after the drying step, showing strong differences among cocoa varieties, this factor and its interaction with the drying technique having greater influence according to the ANOVA simultaneous component analysis. A principal component analysis revealed a close relationship between the volatile content of bulk cocoa samples dried by the OD and SD techniques, whereas slight volatile modifications were perceived among fine-flavor samples dried using the three different techniques under study. Overall, the results provide the basis for the potential application of the simplest inexpensive SBPD technique in order to accelerate the drying process of sun drying and produce cocoa with similar (fine-flavor cocoa) or improved (bulk cocoa) aromatic quality to that formed using the traditional SD or the small-scale OD.

Circulating recombinant forms (CRFs) are important components of the HIV-1 pandemic. Among 110 reported in the literature, 17 are BF1 intersubtype recombinant, most of which are of South American origin. Among these, all 5 identified in the Southern Cone and neighboring countries, except Brazil, derive from a common recombinant ancestor related to CRF12_BF, which circulates widely in Argentina, as deduced from coincident breakpoints and clustering in phylogenetic trees. In a HIV-1 molecular epidemiological study in Spain, we identified a phylogenetic cluster of 20 samples from 3 separate regions which were of F1 subsubtype, related to the Brazilian strain, in protease-reverse transcriptase (Pr-RT) and of subtype B in integrase. Remarkably, 14 individuals from this cluster (designated BF9) were Paraguayans and only 4 were native Spaniards. HIV-1 transmission was predominantly heterosexual, except for a subcluster of 6 individuals, 5 of which were men who have sex with men. Ten additional database sequences, from Argentina (n = 4), Spain (n = 3), Paraguay (n = 1), Brazil (n = 1), and Italy (n = 1), branched within the BF9 cluster. To determine whether it represents a new CRF, near full-length genome (NFLG) sequences were obtained for 6 viruses from 3 Spanish regions. Bootscan analyses showed a coincident BF1 recombinant structure, with 5 breakpoints, located in p17gag, integrase, gp120, gp41-rev overlap, and nef, which was identical to that of two BF1 recombinant viruses from Paraguay previously sequenced in NFLGs. Interestingly, none of the breakpoints coincided with those of CRF12_BF. In a maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree, all 8 NFLG sequences grouped in a strongly supported clade segregating from previously identified CRFs and from the CRF12_BF “family” clade. These results allow us to identify a new HIV-1 CRF, designated CRF66_BF. Through a Bayesian coalescent analysis, the most recent common ancestor of CRF66_BF was estimated around 1984 in South America, either in Paraguay or Argentina. Among Pr-RT sequences obtained by us from HIV-1-infected Paraguayans living in Spain, 14 (20.9%) of 67 were of CRF66_BF, suggesting that CRF66_BF may be one of the major HIV-1 genetic forms circulating in Paraguay. CRF66_BF is the first reported non-Brazilian South American HIV-1 CRF_BF unrelated to CRF12_BF.

The use of off-shore renewable energy sources can be an adequate strategy to produce hydrogen using water electrolysis, particularly in the marine sector. However, the marine atmospheric conditions are very hostile and corrosive, which can affect the materials of an electrolyzer. Among the different electrolysis technologies, alkaline water electrolysis is optimal for large scale hydrogen production because it is an economic and mature technology. In an alkaline electrolysis cell, the electrodes and the separator are the most critical elements to be analyzed under marine atmospheric conditions due to their great influence on the overpotentials and the efficiency. The present research aims to advance in the study of these effects in order to analyze the influence of marine conditions on the performance of an electrolyzer. For this purpose, the components of an alkaline electrolysis cell have been exposed to a salt spray test. According to the results obtained the materials do not show any morphological or compositional change after the salt spray test. This also happens with the polarization curve and the hydrogen production efficiency. So, alkaline water electrolysis technology can be adequate to work under the environmental conditions that take place in off-shore applications.

J. J. Charatonik formulated in 1991 the following problem: What are all mappings that preserve contractibility (noncontractibility) of dendroids? On the other hand, J. J. Charatonik, W. J. Charatonik, and S. Miklos asked in 1990 the following questions (among others related to contractibility): What kinds of confluent mappings preserve contractibility of fans? And what kinds of confluent mappings preserve non contractibility of fans? In this paper, we will show some partial answers to these questions. Additionally, we will consider these questions with other kinds of families of mappings.

La presente contribución aborda un Proyecto de Innovación Docente llevado a cabo entre la Universidad de Oviedo y la Ludwig-Maximiliams-Universität München, con el objetivo de aportar una nueva propuesta orientada hacia la promoción de la autonomía para alcanzar el nivel que describe Henri Holec en su famosa definición. Dicho Proyecto estaba destinado a fomentar, a través de la metodología tándem, la autonomía del alumnado, tanto en la lengua como en el aprendizaje. Los resultados de este Proyecto, enfocado a la mejora de la comprensión oral y la pronunciación de las lenguas alemana y española, corroboran los planteamientos iniciales de que el tándem se puede introducir desde los primeros niveles de aprendizaje de la L2, y que sirve para ayudar a eliminar inhibiciones que a la larga pueden suponer una barrera comunicativa, siempre y cuando el alumno esté apoyado debidamente en su desarrollo autónomo.

Fat and sweeteners contribute to obesity. However, it is unknown whether specific bacteria are selectively modified by different caloric and noncaloric sweeteners with or without a high-fat diet (HFD). Here, we combined extensive host phenotyping and shotgun metagenomics of the gut microbiota to investigate this question. We found that the type of sweetener and its combination with an HFD selectively modified the gut microbiota. Sucralose and steviol glycosides led to the lowest α-diversity of the gut microbiota. Sucralose increased the abundance of B. fragilis in particular, resulting in a decrease in the abundance of occludin and an increase in proinflammatory cytokines, glucose intolerance, fatty acid oxidation and ketone bodies. Sucrose+HFD showed the highest metabolic endotoxemia, weight gain, body fat, total short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), serum TNFα concentration and glucose intolerance. Consumption of sucralose or sucrose resulted in enrichment of the bacterial genes involved in the synthesis of LPS and SCFAs. Notably, brown sugar and honey were associated with the absence of metabolic endotoxemia, increases in bacterial gene diversity and anti-inflammatory markers such as IL-10 and sIgA, the maintenance of glucose tolerance and energy expenditure, similar to the control group, despite the consumption of an HFD. These findings indicate that the type of sweetener and an HFD selectively modify the gut microbiota, bacterial gene enrichment of metabolic pathways involved in LPS and SCFA synthesis, and metabolic endotoxemia associated with different metabolic profiles.

Modern stromatolites are key to the record of past microbial activity preserved in fossil carbonate deposits. Mono-phototrophic cultures dominated by the cyanobacterium Geitlerinema sp. were obtained from a laboratory-maintained, low magnesium-calcite stromatolite originating from Lagoa Vermelha, Brazil. This lagoonal system has been described as a Precambrian analog, illustrating a period of photosynthetically induced atmospheric oxygenation, which created a global sanctuary from shortwave solar radiation and enabled the evolution of modern life on Earth. The enrichment cultures precipitate carbonates in minimal media, suggesting that cyanobacterial photosynthesis and extracellular polymeric substance production may be crucial in the mineralization of the studied stromatolite. We further show that Geitlerinema sp. can build and maintain filamentous mats under long-term UV-C exposure. Our results suggest that present day stromatolites dominated by cyanobacteria may be interpreted as biosignatures of atmospheric oxygenation and have implications for the search for putative biological traces on Mars.

En este trabajo se describen los patrones de resistencia a antibióticos de aislados de Staphylococcus aureus obtenidos de vacas con mastitis, así como su susceptibilidad in vitro a nisina, quitosano y al compósito nisina/quitosano. A partir de muestras de leche obtenidas de vacas enfermas se aislaron e identificaron 53 S. aureus, a los cuales se les analizó el perfil de resistencia a antibióticos. Los resultados evidenciaron una alta frecuencia de resistencia hacia el grupo de los beta-lactámicos, principalmente a penicilina, dicloxacilina y ampicilina. Asimismo, se detectó multirresistencia en algunos aislados, ya que mostraron tolerancia a 3 o 4 grupos de antibióticos, destacando los aislados AMC-9 (resistente a tres grupos) y AMC-23 (resistente a cuatro grupos). También se resalta que todos los aislados fueron susceptibles a levofloxacina. Por otra parte, se analizó la susceptibilidad in vitro de los aislados a nisina, quitosano y al compósito nisina/quitosano, mediante la determinación de la concentración mínima inhibitoria. Los resultados indican que el 100 % de los aislados fue susceptible a quitosano y al compósito nisina/quitosano y el 47.1 % a la nisina. El efecto del quitosano y del compósito nisina/quitosano sobre los aislados multirresistentes AMC-9 y AMC-23 fue bactericida. Estos resultados revelan el potencial de los compuestos antimicrobianos quitosano y nisina/quitosano para ser utilizados como agentes terapéuticos contra la mastitis bovina.

Films formulated with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) (synthetic biopolymer) were reinforced with lignocellulose nanofibres (LCNF) from residues of vegetable production (natural biopolymer). The LCNF were obtained by mechanical and chemical pre-treatment by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO) and added to the polyvinyl alcohol (polymer matrix) with the aim of improving the properties of the film for use in food packaging. The mechanical properties, crystallinity, thermal resistance, chemical structure, antioxidant activity, water barrier properties and optical properties (transparency and UV barrier), were evaluated. In general, with the addition of LCNF, an improvement in the studied properties of the films was observed. In terms of mechanical properties, the films reinforced with 7% LCNF TEMPO showed the best results for tensile strength, Young’s modulus and elongation at break. At the same LCNF proportion, the thermal stability (Tmax) increased between 5.5% and 10.8%, and the antioxidant activity increased between 90.9% and 191.8%, depending on the raw material and the pre-treatment used to obtain the different LCNF. Finally, a large increase in UV blocking was also observed with the addition of 7% LCNF. In particular, the films with 7% of eggplant LCNF showed higher performance for Young’s modulus, elongation at break, thermal stability and UV barrier. Overall, results demonstrated that the use of LCNF generated from agricultural residues represents a suitable bioeconomy approach able to enhance film properties for its application in the development of more sustainable and eco-friendly food packaging systems.

The dynamics of open quantum systems are of great interest in many research fields, such as for the interaction of a quantum emitter with the electromagnetic modes of a nanophotonic structure. A powerful approach for treating such setups in the non-Markovian limit is given by the chain mapping where an arbitrary environment can be transformed to a chain of modes with only nearest-neighbor coupling. However, when long propagation times are desired, the required long chain lengths limit the utility of this approach. We study various approaches for truncating the chains at manageable lengths while still preserving an accurate description of the dynamics. We achieve this by introducing losses to the chain modes in such a way that the effective environment acting on the system remains unchanged, using a number of different strategies. Furthermore, we demonstrate that extending the chain mapping to allow next-nearest neighbor coupling permits the reproduction of an arbitrary environment, and adding longer-range interactions does not further increase the effective number of degrees of freedom in the environment.

A biodegradable packaging film containing cellulose nanofibers from olive tree pruning, a by-product of olives production, was obtained using a solvent casting method. Nanocellulose was added to polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to enhance the technological properties of the composite film as food packaging material. Nanocellulose was obtained from unbleached and bleached pulp through a mechanical and TEMPO pretreatment. Crystalline and chemical structure, surface microstructure, UV and gas barrier, optical, mechanical and antioxidant properties, as well as thermal stability were evaluated. Regarding optical properties, the UV barrier was increased from 6% for the pure PVA film to 50% and 24% for unbleached and bleached nanocellulose, respectively. The antioxidant capacity increased significantly in unbleached mechanical nanocellulose-films (5.3%) compared to pure PVA film (1.7%). In terms of mechanical properties, the tensile strength of the 5% unbleached mechanical nanocellulose films was significantly improved compared to the pure PVA film. Similarly, the 5% nanocellulose films had increased the thermal stability and improved barrier properties, reducing water vapor permeability by 38–59% and presenting an oxygen barrier comparable to aluminum layer and plastic films. Our results support the use of the developed films as a green alternative material for food packaging.

Abstract Current efforts are directed to reducing the gut dysbiosis and inflammation produced by obesity. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether consuming nopal, a vegetable rich in dietary fibre, vitamin C, and polyphenols can reduce the metabolic consequences of obesity by modifying the gut microbiota and preventing metabolic endotoxemia in rats fed a high fat and sucrose diet. With this aim, rats were fed a high fat diet with 5% sucrose in the drinking water (HFS) for 7 months and then were fed for 1 month with HFS + 5% nopal (HFS + N). The composition of gut microbiota was assessed by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene. Nopal modified gut microbiota and increased intestinal occludin-1 in the HFS + N group. This was associated with a decrease in metabolic endotoxemia, glucose insulinotropic peptide, glucose intolerance, lipogenesis, and metabolic inflexibility. These changes were accompanied by reduced hepatic steatosis and oxidative stress in adipose tissue and brain, and improved cognitive function, associated with an increase in B. fragilis. This study supports the use of nopal as a functional food and prebiotic for its ability to modify gut microbiota and to reduce metabolic endotoxemia and other obesity-related biochemical abnormalities.

Resumen Resumen: La industria de la construcción es sin lugar a dudas una de las mayores generadoras de riesgos de trabajo, sin embargo, los programas de prevención no hacen evidente dicha situación. Los trabajadores de la industria de la construcción laboran bajo condiciones precarias, carecen de seguridad social, y desconocen por completo los derechos que les son consignados por ley pese a no firmar un contrato. Es imprescindible que dichos trabajadores y los responsables de su actividad laboral, conozcan los factores de riesgo a que se encuentran expuestos, pero sobre todo las graves afecciones a la salud que estos pueden provocar, que van más allá de las lesiones músculo-esqueléticas incapacitantes tan reconocidas en bibliografía. Conforme se establezca la necesidad de un adecuado diagnóstico situacional al interior de las industrias, la prevención de patologías que hoy se consideran meramente generales y cuyo origen se encuentra en el desempeño del trabajo, encaminará a la salud pública a la adopción de políticas en mejora de las condiciones del mismo. Objetivo: Identificar las enfermedades actuales que se asocian a los factores de riesgo de la industria de la construcción en México. Material y Métodos: Revisión bibliográfica publicada desde enero del 2000 hasta noviembre del 2016 en bases de datos: PUBMED, SciELO y Medline. Se consultaron bibliografías tanto en inglés como en español. Las palabras clave consideradas en la búsqueda incluyeron: industria de la construcción, factores de riesgo, trabajo, enfermedades. Conclusiones: La industria de la construcción al presentar mayor cantidad de riesgos ergonómicos en México, debería ser una de las más estrechamente vigiladas, epidemiológicamente hablando, pues de ella derivan un gran número de enfermedades que aquejan a la población y que saturan diariamente al sistema de salud de nuestro país además de que afecta al desarrollo económico debido a la disminución del rendimiento y el ausentismo de los trabajadores afectados. La exigencia de dicha vigilancia epidemiológica efectuada por las autoridades del trabajo tendrían que redundar en mejoras de las condiciones al interior de los centros de trabajo, es decir, desde equipar a los trabajadores de herramientas aptas y específicas para su actividad, dotarlos con equipo de protección personal acorde a su anatomía y con las características específicas para los tipos de factores y sustancias a las que se exponen, así como la reingeniería de los procesos de construcción, obsoletos o artesanales, con tecnología. Pero sobre todo comunicar y mantener informados a los trabajadores acerca de los riesgos a que están expuestos por el tipo de actividad laboral que desempeñan. Es fundamental que en este compromiso de vigilancia se tejan relaciones internas estrechas y formales entre los trabajadores y los patrones, pero también es fundamental que se genere un compromiso transectorial en materia de legislación y normatividad para que verdaderamente se apliquen y cumplan las obligaciones, deberes y derechos que garanticen un trabajo digno para este sector de la población.

ABSTRACT Background: subtotal colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis (IRA) is currently the most common surgical option in young patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). However, this surgery does prevent the appearance of lesions in the rectal remnant. In these cases, the endoscopic submucosal dissection might be a feasible option. However, drawbacks such as extreme fibrosis and a difficult maneuverability in the rectal remnant make this technique rather challenging. An ESD by the pocket creation method was planned with the purpose of overcoming these handicaps. Case report: an en-bloq resection of 30 mm of the recurrent adenoma located in rectal remnant of a 42-year-old woman with FAP was successfully achieved following this approach. Two months of follow up endoscopy did not show residual adenomatous tissue. Discussion: in summary, endoscopic submucosal dissection by the pocket creation method allowed a safe and effective dissection and an en-bloc resection of this challenging polyp was achieved.

Background Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a serious health problem over the world; thus, the aim of the present work was to develop a lifestyle intervention to decrease the dysbiosis of gut microbiota and reduce the biochemical abnormalities of MetS. Methods and Results The prevalence of MetS was evaluated in 1065 subjects of Mexico City, Mexico, and the gut microbiota in a subsample. Subjects with MetS were selected for a pragmatic study based on a lifestyle intervention with a low‐saturated‐fat diet, reduced‐energy intake, with functional foods and physical activity, and a second group was selected for a randomized control‐placebo study to assess the gut microbiota after the dietary intervention. Prevalence of MetS was 53%, and the higher the body mass index, the higher the gut microbiota dysbiosis. The higher the Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance, the lower the high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration. The pragmatic study revealed that after 15 days on a low‐saturated‐fat diet, there was a 24% reduction in serum triglycerides; and after a 75‐day lifestyle intervention, MetS was reduced by 44.8%, with a reduction in low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol, small low‐density lipoprotein particles, glucose intolerance, lipopolysaccharide, and branched‐chain amino acid. The randomized control‐placebo study showed that after the lifestyle intervention, there was a decrease in the dysbiosis of the gut microbiota associated with a reduction in the Prevotella/ Bacteroides ratio and an increase in the abundance of Akkermansia muciniphila and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii. Conclusions A lifestyle intervention significantly decreased MetS components, small low‐density lipoprotein particle concentration, gut microbiota dysbiosis, and metabolic endotoxemia, reducing the risk of atherosclerosis. In Western Europe, the HIV-1 epidemic among men who have sex with men (MSM) is dominated by subtype B. However, recently, other genetic forms have been reported to circulate in this population, as evidenced by their grouping in clusters predominantly comprising European individuals. Here we describe four large HIV-1 non-subtype B clusters spreading among MSM in Spain. Samples were collected in 9 regions. A pol fragment was amplified from plasma RNA or blood-extracted DNA. Phylogenetic analyses were performed via maximum likelihood, including database sequences of the same genetic forms as the identified clusters. Times and locations of the most recent common ancestors (MRCA) of clusters were estimated with a Bayesian method. Five large non-subtype B clusters associated with MSM were identified. The largest one, of F1 subtype, was reported previously. The other four were of CRF02_AG (CRF02_1; n = 115) and subtypes A1 (A1_1; n = 66), F1 (F1_3; n = 36), and C (C_7; n = 17). Most individuals belonging to them had been diagnosed of HIV-1 infection in the last 10 years. Each cluster comprised viruses from 3 to 8 Spanish regions and also comprised or was related to viruses from other countries: CRF02_1 comprised a Japanese subcluster and viruses from 8 other countries from Western Europe, Asia, and South America; A1_1 comprised viruses from Portugal, United Kingom, and United States, and was related to the A1 strain circulating in Greece, Albania and Cyprus; F1_3 was related to viruses from Romania; and C_7 comprised viruses from Portugal and was related to a virus from Mozambique. A subcluster within CRF02_1 was associated with heterosexual transmission. Near full-length genomes of each cluster were of uniform genetic form. Times of MRCAs of CRF02_1, A1_1, F1_3, and C_7 were estimated around 1986, 1989, 2013, and 1983, respectively. MRCA locations for CRF02_1 and A1_1 were uncertain (however initial expansions in Spain in Madrid and Vigo, respectively, were estimated) and were most probable in Bilbao, Spain, for F1_3 and Portugal for C_7. These results show that the HIV-1 epidemic among MSM in Spain is becoming increasingly diverse through the expansion of diverse non-subtype B clusters, comprising or related to viruses circulating in other countries.

This paper provides strong evidence for the contribution of the phylum Firmicutes in mediating the primary precipitation of Mg-rich carbonates (hydromagnesite, dolomite, magnesite, and nesquehonite) in recent microbialites from a highly alkaline and ephemeral inland lake (Las Eras, Central Spain). The carbonate mineral precipitation occurs sequentially as the microbial mats decay. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) provided solid proof that hydromagnesite nucleation is initiated on the exopolymeric substances (EPS) and the microbial cells associated to the microbial mat degradation areas. The progressive mineralization of the EPS and bacterial cells by hydromagnesite plate-like crystals on their surface, results in the entombment of the bacteria and formation of radiating aggregates of hydromagnesite crystals. The hydrous phases, mostly hydromagnesite, were produced at a high percentage in the first stages of the microbial degradation of organic matter. When the availability of organic substrates declines, the heterotrophs tend to reduce their number and metabolic activity, remain dormant. At this stage, the anhydrous phases, dolomite and magnesite, nucleate on bacterial nanoglobules and/or collapsed cells. Evidence for the sequential formation of the Mg-rich carbonates trough the decay of organic matter by a fermentative EPS-forming bacterium isolated from the microbialites, Desemzia incerta, is drawn through a comparative analysis of carbonate formation in both natural and experimental settings. This study will help to constrain potential mechanisms of carbonate formation in natural systems, which are of fundamental importance not only for understanding modern environments but also as a window into the geologic past of Earth and potentially Mars.

Olea europaea L. leaves constitute a source of bioactive compounds with recognized benefits for both human health and technological purposes. In the present work, different extracts from olive leaves were obtained by the application of two extraction methods, Soxhlet and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), and six solvents (distilled water, ethanolic and glycerol mixtures solvents). MAE was applied under 40, 60 and 80 °C for 3, 6.5 and 10 min. The effect of the extraction method, solvent and treatment factors (the latter in MAE) on the total phenol content (TPC), the antioxidant activity (AA) and the phenolic profile of the extracts were all evaluated. The extracts showed high values of TPC (up to 76.1 mg GAE/g DW) and AA (up to 78 mg TE/g DW), with oleuropein being the most predominant compound in all extracts. The Soxhlet extraction method exhibited better yields in TPC than in MAE, although both methods presented comparable AA values. The water MAE extract presented the strongest antimicrobial activity against five foodborne pathogens, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranging from 2.5 to 60 mg/mL. MAE water extract is proposed to be exploited in the food and nutraceutical industry in the frame of a sustainable economy.

The aim of the work described here was to understand the pedogeochemical signature of five rare earth elements (REEs; Ce, Nd, La, Y, and Sc) in vineyard soils in Campo de Calatrava (a unique territory with calcareous, volcanic and metamorphic rocks). The mean contents in surface horizons of Ce, Nd, La, Y, and Sc were 65.7, 32.0, 35.5, 18.8, and 13.9 mg·kg–1, respectively. In subsurface horizons the contents were Ce 62.8, Nd 31.1, La 35.7, Y 17.9, and Sc 14.4 mg·kg–1. The results show that mean contents of REEs in the area under investigation are in the order Ce > Nd > La > Y > Sc. Ce has a very high range, with a value close to 150 mg·kg–1. On the other hand, concentrations of Ce, Nd, Y, and Sc are higher in soils on volcanic material than in soils on nonvolcanic material, while only La values are lower in soils on volcanic rocks. The distributional maps of REEs in surface and subsurface horizons suggest that parent material and pedogenesis such as argillization and calcium carbonate accumulation are more important factors than the use of REE-based fertilizers, except in certain exceptional cases (consistent with a possible specific human impact after continuous fertilization).

Black carrot has been attracting increasing thanks to its high bioactive compound content. This study presents the polyphenol bio-accessibility of black carrot and two derived products (black carrot snack (BC snack) and black carrot seasoning (BC seasoning)) after in vitro gastrointestinal digestion and colonic fermentation. Additionally, antioxidant activity was measured by 2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS), 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assays. Nine flavonoids and eight anthocyanins were determined by ultra high-performance liquid chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS) analysis, the predominant compounds being the hydroxycinnamic acids 3-O-feruloylquinic acid, 4-O-feruloylquinic acid and chlorogenic acid. The BC snack (108 µmol/g DW) presented the highest total polyphenol content, followed by BC seasoning (53 µmol/g DW) and black carrot (11.4 µmol/g DW). The main polyphenols still bio-accessible after in vitro digestion were the hydroxycinnamic acids, with mean recovery rates of 113 % for black carrot, 69% for BC snack and 81% for BC seasoning. The incubation of black carrot and its derived products with human faecal bacterial resulted in the complete degradation of anthocyanins and in the formation of mainly 3-(4′-hydroxyphenyl)propanoic acid as the major catabolic event. In conclusion, our results suggest that the black carrot matrix impacts significantly affects the bio-accessibility of polyphenols and, therefore, their potential health benefits.

The extraordinary genetic variability of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) group M has led to the identification of 10 subtypes, 102 circulating recombinant forms (CRFs) and numerous unique recombinant forms. Among CRFs, 11 derived from subtypes B and C have been identified in China, Brazil, and Italy. Here we identify a new HIV-1 CRF_BC in Northern Spain. Originally, a phylogenetic cluster of 15 viruses of subtype C in protease-reverse transcriptase was identified in an HIV-1 molecular surveillance study in Spain, most of them from individuals from the Basque Country and heterosexually transmitted. Analyses of near full-length genome sequences from six viruses from three cities revealed that they were BC recombinant with coincident mosaic structures different from known CRFs. This allowed the definition of a new HIV-1 CRF designated CRF108_BC, whose genome is predominantly of subtype C, with four short subtype B fragments. Phylogenetic analyses with database sequences supported a Brazilian ancestry of the parental subtype C strain. Coalescent Bayesian analyses estimated the most recent common ancestor of CRF108_BC in the city of Vitoria, Basque Country, around 2000. CRF108_BC is the first CRF_BC identified in Spain and the second in Europe, after CRF60_BC, both phylogenetically related to Brazilian subtype C strains.

Los valores del patrimonio edificado en las tenencias del municipio de Morelia distan mucho de ser los de la zona de monumentos de la capital, ya que tienen que ver con la cultura popular, el saber colectivo y las tradiciones constructivas. El artículo explica que como reflejo de los cambios en la economía, cultura y desarrollo de sus habitantes, las tenencias experimentan un proceso de transformación y hasta la pérdida de su patrimonio edificado. Las unidades de análisis se seleccionaron con el Índice de Accesibilidad e Interacción Espacial; posteriormente se explican los indicadores de Accesibilidad y Urbanización, y finalmente estos datos se correlacionan con el indicador de transformación del patrimonio. Medir y conocer las características de los factores que transforman el patrimonio cultural edificado es una manera anticipada de conservarlo como una manifestación cultural, histórica, de una forma de vida y un elemento de identidad.

With the aim of identifying new sources to produce cellulose nanofibers, olive tree pruning biomass (OTPB) was proposed for valorization as a sustainable source of cellulose. OTPB was subjected to a soda pulping process for cellulose purification and to facilitate the delamination of the fiber in the nanofibrillation process. Unbleached and bleached pulp were used to study the effect of lignin in the production of cellulose nanofibers through different pretreatments (mechanical and TEMPO-mediated oxidation). High-pressure homogenization was used as the nanofibrillation treatment. It was observed that for mechanical pretreatment, the presence of lignin in the fiber produces a greater fibrillation, resulting in a smaller width than that achieved with bleached fiber. In the case of TEMPO-mediated oxidation, the cellulose nanofiber characteristics show that the presence of lignin has an adverse effect on fiber oxidation, resulting in lower nanofibrillation. It was observed that the crystallinity of the nanofibers is lower than that of the original fiber, especially for unbleached nanofibers. The residual lignin content resulted in a greater thermal stability of the cellulose nanofibers, especially for those obtained by TEMPO-mediated oxidation. The characteristics of the cellulose nanofibers obtained in this work identify a gateway to many possibilities for reinforcement agents in paper suspension and polymeric matrices.

Becoming a smart city is one of the top priorities in the urban agenda of many European cities. Among the various strategies in the transition path, local governments seek to bring innovation to their cities by encouraging multinational enterprises to deploy their green energy services and products in their municipalities. Knowing how to attract these enterprises implies that political leaders understand the multi-criteria decision problem that the energy sector enterprises face when deciding whether to expand to one city or another. To this end, the purpose of this study is to design a new manageable and controllable framework oriented to European cities’ public managers, based on the assessment of criteria and sub-criteria governing the strategic location decision made by these enterprises. A decision support framework is developed based on the AHP technique combined with an extended version of the hesitant fuzzy linguistic TOPSIS method. The main results indicate the higher relative importance of government policies, such as degree of transparency or bureaucracy level, as compared to market conditions or economic aspects of the city’s host country. These results can be great assets to current European leaders, they show the feasibility of the method and open up the possibility to replicate the proposed framework to other sectors or geographical areas.

Background and study aims The adequate visualization of the dissection line, inside the submucosal layer, supposes the main challenging issue in ESD. For this reason, several counter traction methods have been developed focused on overcoming this handicap. One of which, Magnetic anchor guided – ESD (MG-ESD) is an attractive alternative. However, the usefulness of this approach has been scarcely assessed and compared with other ESD strategies. Therefore, the aim of this study is to compare three different ESD alternatives in experimental faction. Methods This was a prospective non-randomized study, in which three different ESD techniques were performed in an ex-vivo gastric porcine model by an endoscopist slight expertise in ESD: conventional ESD, waterjet assisted ESD and MG-ESD. MG-ESD was performed using two different magnets: inner Neodymiun ringed shape magnet attached to the simulated lesions by an endoclip and external electromagnet connected to a Single Output Adjustable 24V/0.3A Power Supply Unit. Results Forty-six ESD procedures were performed: 24 conventional ESD, 12 waterjet-assisted ESD and 10 MG-ESD. Average size of the simulated lesions was 33.86 mm. No differences in terms of safety and efficacy were registered between the three approaches. Nevertheless, MG-ESD proved to be faster and more efficient than conventional ESD and water-jet assisted ESD (min per cm2 10.85 vs. 7.43 vs. 3,41; P = 0.001). Conclusions MG-ESD could be a feasible alternative to conventional ESD even at the beginning of the learning curve. Therefore, researches focused on developing appropriate ESD magnetic devices and further comparative studies must be promoted, in order to assess the reliable usefulness of the magnet-assistance in ESD.

This paper presents a financial risk assessment model for the electrical-energy-sale process trough long-term bilateral contracts. The volatility exhibited by spot prices of electricity in Colombia constitutes one of the aspects of big influence in financial risk assessment within the electrical sector, where weather conditions are fundamental in the consolidation of electricity prices in a country whose major generation source is hydroelectricity. Moreover, in this paper, a case study is introduced from the perspective of one of the electricity market agents, namely the generator. The model is developed by means of probability-distribution definitions that represent input variables. Monte Carlo simulation methods were applied together with the analysis of robust risk indicators VaR (Value at Risk) and CVaR (Conditional Value at Risk), over a given time horizon and also considering different scenarios. This provides proper quantitative arguments for more detailed decision-making processes. Once the historic series of spot prices and contracts are analyzed and the analysis scenario has been deployed together with its corresponding financial risk assessment, a contracting optimal portfolio scheme (spot and bilateral contracts) is proposed based on the risk-aversion level of the generator that supports the decision-making process.
