Freshwater ecosystems have a greater value for biodiversity per surface area than terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Streams and lakes are notably prone to biodiversity loss, being the greatest threats habitat destructions and nonnative species. The aim of the present study is to assess the fish composition of lotic and lentic water systems of an island ecosystem (Gökçeada Island, Turkey), which is poorly studied, and to highlight the entry routes and possible impacts of translocated fish species in an island ecosystem. The field surveys were conducted in a total of 14 sampling sites (five reservoirs and nine streams) in the inland waters of Gökçeada Island between September 2019 and January 2021. Fish samples were collected by electrofishing (SAMUS 1000; a backpack electro-shocker). A total of eight fish species belonging to six families (Anguillidae, Atherinidae, Cyprinidae, Leuciscidae, Mugilidae, and Poeciliidae) were determined. As a result fish community of the island was mostly composed by the introduced species Carassius gibelio, Gambusia holbrooki and Pseudorasbora parva. This study provides the first detailed information on the distribution of the fish species encountered in the inland waters of Gökçeada Island. Results showed that the fish fauna of the island was predominantly shaped by fish stocking activities.

Amaç: Bu çalışmada Karasu Deresi’nde yaşayan Barbus cyclolepis Heckel, 1837 ve Gobio bulgaricus Drensky, 1926 türlerinin bazı büyüme özellikleri mevsimsel olarak incelenmiştir.Materyal ve Yöntem: Örnekleme mevsimlik olarak (Ağustos 2017, Kasım 2017, Ocak 2018, Şubat 2018, Nisan 2018) elektroşok aracılığıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Her mevsimi temsil edecek örneklemeler arka arkaya 3 gün tekrarlanmıştır. Elde edilen B. cyclolepis ve G. bulgaricus bireylerinin boy, ağırlık, yaş, eşey dağılımları, yaş-boy, yaş-ağırlık, boy-ağırlık ilişkileri ve Fulton kondisyon faktörü değerleri incelenmiştir.Bulgular: İncelenen B. cyclolepis bireyleri 0-III yaş gruplarındadır. Standart boy değerleri 3,5-13,5 cm; ağırlık değerleri ise 1,2232-50,8213 g arasında değişmiştir. Dişi:erkek oranı 1:0,94 olarak saptanmıştır. Tüm bireylerde; boy-ağırlık ilişkisi W= 0,0253*SL2,9226 olarak belirlenmiştir. Yaşa göre en düşük kondisyon faktörü değeri, III yaş grubunda (1,982) dişi bireylerde, en yüksek kondisyon faktörü değeri I yaş grubunda (2,288) erkek bireylerde bulunmuştur. G. bulgaricus türünün yaş dağılımı ise I-IV yaş grupları arasında değişmektedir. Standart boy değerleri 2,5-9,6 cm; ağırlık değerleri ise 0,2989-18,3014 g arasında değişmiştir. Dişi:erkek oranı 1:1,56 olarak saptanmıştır. Tüm bireylerde; boy-ağırlık ilişkisi W= 0,0209*SL3,0081 olarak belirlenmiştir. Yaşa göre en düşük kondisyon faktörü değeri, II yaş grubunda (1,950) erkek bireylerde, en yüksek kondisyon faktörü değeri IV yaş grubunda (2,191) dişi bireylerde bulunmuştur.Sonuç: Bu çalışma sonucunda Karasu deresinde yaşayan Barbus cyclolepis ve Gobio bulgaricus türlerinin kimi büyüme özellikleri ilk defa incelenmiştir., Objective: In this study, some growth characteristics of Barbus cyclolepis Heckel, 1837 and Gobio bulgaricus Drensky, 1926 species living in Karasu Stream, were investigated.Materials and Methods: Sampling was carried out seasonal (August 2017, November 2017, January 2018, February 2018, April 2018) via electroshock. Samplings representing each season were repeated for 3 consecutive days. Lenght, weight, age, sex distributions and ratios, age-length, age-weight, length-weight relationships, Von Bertalanffy parameters, Fulton condition factor values of the obtained B. cyclolepis and G. bulgaricus individuals were analyzed.Results: The examined B.cyclolepis individuals are in the 0-III age groups. Standard length values are 3.5-13.5 cm; The weight values varied between 1.2232-50.8213 g. The female: male ratio was determined as 1: 0.94. In all individuals; Length-weight relationship was determined as W= 0.0253*SL2.9226.According to age, the lowest condition factor value was found in female individuals in the III age group (1.982), and the highestcondition factor value was found in male individuals in the I age group (2.288).The age distribution of G. bulgaricus species varies between I-IV age groups. Standard length values are 2.5-9.6 cm; The weightvalues varied between 0.2989-18.3014 g. The female: male ratio was determined as 1:1.56. In all individuals; Length-weightrelationship was determined as W= 0.0209* SL3.0081. According to age, the lowest condition factor value was found in maleindividuals in the II age group (1.950), and the highest condition factor value was found in female individuals in the IV age group(2.191).Conclusion: As a result of this study, some growth characteristics of Barbus cyclolepis and Gobio bulgaricus species living inKarasu stream were investigated for the first time.

We report a new species, Oxynoemacheilus fatsaensis, from the Elekci Stream, a small stream that flows to the Black Sea in Northern Turkey. It is distinguished from other Oxynoemacheilus species in the Black Sea, Upper Euphrates, and Kura-Aras River basins by having a suborbital groove in males, an axillary lobe at the pelvic-fin base, no dorsal adipose crest on the caudal peduncle, a deeply emarginate caudal fin, small inner and outer rostral barbels, and mottled flank pattern. Molecular data suggest that the new species is separated by a minimum p-distance of 3.3% from O. banarescui in the mitochondrial DNA COI barcode region.

This study aims to investigate the length-weight (LWRs) and length-length relationships (LLRs) of three endemic freshwater fish species (Squalius recurvirostris, Squalius carinus and Capoeta turani) living in Turkey. Fish samples were captured with backpack electro-shocker from June 2006 to October 2010. The calculated values of parameter b in the LWRs were 3.363 and 3.045 for S. recurvirostris (Eber and Ilgın Lake populations, respectively), 3.275 for S. carinus and 3.111 for C. turani. The coefficients of correlation (r) for all the LLR equations were greater than 0.95. The growth parameters of S. recurvirostris is provided for the first time in this study

The length-weight relationships (LWRs) of Clupeonella cultriventris and Clupeonella muhlisi were analysed. Fish samples were collected gill nets (10 mm mesh sized) from the Buyukcekmece Reservoir and Kucukcekmece Lagoon April and June 2016. Samples from Durusu Reservoir and Uluabat Lake were obtained from Istanbul University Science Faculty Hydrobiology Museum. The values of parameter b in the LWR equations varied from 3.177 (Kucukcekmece Lake population) to 3.496 (Buyukcekmece Reservoir population) for C. cultriventris and 3.258 (Uluabat Lake) for C. muhlisi.

The length‐weight relationships (LWRs) of Alburnus istanbulensis Battalgil, 1941, Barbus tauricus Kessler, 1877, Cobitis pontica Vasil'eva & Vasil'ev, 2006, Cobitis strumicae Karaman, 1955, Gobio bulgaricus Drensky, 1926, Phoxinus strandjae Drensky, 1926 and Squalius orpheus Kottelat & Economidis, 2006 were analysed. Fish samples were collected by electroshocker (SAMUS 725 G and SAMUS 725 M portable electroshockers; frequency 50–55 Hz; 30–70 cm fishing depth) in some water bodies in Turkish Thrace from March 2012 to August 2017. The values of parameter b in the LWR equations varied from 2.916 (B. tauricus) to 3.336 (P. strandjae). This study also provides a new maximum length data for A. istanbulensis, G. bulgaricus, P. strandjae and S. orpheus.

Bu calisma ile, hem Avrupa hem de Asya kitalarinin etkisinde kalan Istanbul ilinin ic su balik faunasinin belirlenmesi amaclanmistir. Balik orneklemesi lotik ve lentik biyotoplardaki 136 farkli lokalitede DC Elektrosoker ve sade ag kullanilarak gerceklestirilmistir. Calisma sonucunda, Atherinidae, Centrarchidae, Clupeidae, Cobitidae, Cyprinidae, Esocidae, Gasterosteidae, Gobiidae, Percidae, Poecilidae, Salmonidae ve Syngnathidae olmak uzere 12 familyaya ait toplam 38 takson tespit edilmistir. Calisma alaninda, 20 takson ile Cyprinidae en fazla tur cesitliligine sahip iken, Atherinidae, Centrarchidae, Clupeidae, Esocidae, Gasterosteidae, Poecilidae, Salmonidae ve Syngnathidae familyalari birer tur ile temsil edilmistir. En yaygin rastlanan turler Cyprinidae familyasindan Petroleuciscus borysthenicus (Kessler, 1859), Rhodeus amarus (Bloch, 1782) ve Gobio kovatschevi Chichkoff 1937’dir. Bu calismayla Istanbul balik faunasi icin Cobitis strumicae Karaman, 1955 , Alburnoides kosswigi Turan, Kaya, Baycelebi, Bektas & Ekmekci, 2017 ve Salmo coruhensis Turan, Kottelat & Engin, 2010 turleri ilk defa bildirilmektedir. Elde edilemeyen 4 turle birlikte Istanbul’da yasayan ic su baligi turu sayisi 42 olmustur.

Oxynoemacheilus nasreddini, new species, from Lake Akşehir, Eber, Eğirdir, and Ilgın basins in Central Anatolia is distinguished from other species of Oxynoemacheilus in Central Anatolia by having irregularly shaped blotches on flank; 2–4 dark-brown bands on caudal fin; a slender body, and an emarginate caudal fin in which the shortest middle caudal-fin ray is 76–91% of the longest ray of the upper caudal-fin lobe. Molecular data suggest that the new species is closely related to O. mediterraneus from the Aksu and Köprüçay drainages. Although the two species are separated by only a minimum K2P distance of 1.2% in the mtDNA COI barcode region, they are well distinguished morphologically. The situation is complicated by loaches from Lake Eğirdir basin that are identified as O. nasreddini by their morphological character states but are only distinguished from O. mediterraneus by a minimum K2P distance of 0.2% in the mtDNA COI barcode region.

The aims of the study are to determine what the organisms Barbus cyclolepis consume as food in its feeding environments and to compare prey consumption with prey abundance in the environment. The study was conducted in the Istranca Stream located in Istanbul (Turkey) during the spring and summer of 2012. A total of 142 B. cyclolepis specimens were captured and it is determined that 94 of them had full digestive tracts. Diet analyses of B. cyclolepis showed that its food spectrum consisted of 11 different food types, and the species was found to feed on insects, mainly Diptera (IRI%= 92.26%). The most abundant macroinvertebrate organisms in the environment were Diptera and Gastropoda. The electivity index of B. cyclolepis was positive for Diptera in the spring (E= 0.49), but the value was below the expected value of 0.6 for high selectivity. The electivity values for other macroinvertebrate groups, consumed in low proportions, were negative. In summer, the fish fed on Diptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera, but a high electivity index value was found only for Trichoptera (E= 0.87). Results showed that B. cyclolepis mainly consumed Diptera as food and did not consume Gastropoda, although it is the second most abundant macroinvertebrate group in the environment. A relationship was determined between the proportion of food groups consumed in the digestive tracts of fish and the ratios of macroinvertebrates in the environment, and as a result, it was specified that the fish was selective on Diptera.

Pseudophoxinus cilicicus, new species, is described from the Arsuz, Ceyhan and Seyhan river drainages in the Gulf of İskenderun. It is distinguished from other members of the Pseudophoxinus zeregi species group by having a complete lateral line with 38–45 + 2–3 scales, the lower lip usually slightly projecting beyond the tip of the upper lip, a prominent black stripe along the flank, and no black pigments below the lateral line. Pseudophoxinus cilicicus is distinguished from P. zekayi by a minimum K2P distance of 3.8% based on the mitochondrial DNA barcode region. Pseudophoxinus atropatenus and P. sojuchbulagi are returned to the genus Rutilus.

In the Middle East, species of Garra are believed to have invaded the area in two independent waves from the Indo-Malayan biogeographic region. This hypothesis is based on the structure of the mental disc, a unique specialization of the lower lip, which is believed to be an adaptation to fast-flowing waters. While several species have such a mental disc, others completely lack a mental disc, being adapted to slow-moving water or to subterranean life. In this study, the phylogenetic relationships of Middle Eastern Garra species, including 16 described and 4 undescribed species, were analysed using mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I sequences. The results are concordant with traditional hypotheses on two invasion events; however, these invasion events are independent from the presence, absence or shape of the mental disc. We postulate convergent reduction of the mental disc in 5–6 independent lineages of Garra in the Middle East.

Here we record this species from seven additional sites, three in the upper Euphrates drainage, one in the upper Seyhan and three in the upper Ceyhan River drainages. These findings largely expand the distribution area of the species and its habitats are discussed.

Fish sampling was performed by using DC Electroshocker, gillnet, trammel-net, seine-net and fyke-net in April-September 2000, May-July 2001 and July 2009. A total of 33 taxa belonging to 14 families was identified; Acheilognathidae, Atherinidae, Centrarchidae, Clupeidae, Cobitidae, Cyprinidae, Gasterosteidae, Gobiidae, Gobionidae, Leuciscidae, Mugilidae, Poecilidae, Salmonidae and Syngnathidae. in the study area, Leuciscidae has the highest species richness with 10 taxa, while Acheilognathidae, Atherinidae, Centrarchidae, Clupeidae, Cobitidae, Gasterosteidae, Gobionidae, Poecilidae and Syngnathidae families are represented by a single species. the most common found fish species are Barbus tauricus, Gobio kovatschevi, Alburnus istanbulensis and Petroleuciscus borysthenicus. in terms of numbers of specimens, Gambusia holbrooki was followed by Phoxinus strandjae, Alburnoides tzanevi, Barbus tauricus and Alburnus istanbulensis.

Alburnus goekhani, new species, is described from the Yeşilırmak and Kızılırmak River drainages. It belongs to the A. alburnus species group and is distinguished from other species in this group in Anatolia by having 48–56 + 2–3 scales in the lateral-line, 12–15 gill rakers, a distinct dark lateral stripe along the flank on live and preserved specimens and the anal-fin origin situated below the branched dorsal-fin ray 6–8. Alburnus goekhani is also well distinguished from other Alburnus species by its DNA barcode sequence.

Alburnus kotschyi is re-described and a neotype is designated. It is found in a small isolated coastal stream at Arsuz at the eastern Mediterranean coast as well as in the Ceyhan and Seyhan River drainages in southern Anatolia. Alburnus adanensis, from the Seyhan River, seems not to have been found again since its first description in 1944 and might be extinct.

Oxynoemacheilus hazarensis, new species, from Lake Hazar in the Turkish Tigris drainage, is distinguished from other Oxynoemacheilus in the Tigris drainage by having the combination of a slightly emarginate caudal fin, no suborbital groove in males, an incomplete lateral line, no scales on the back and flank in front of the anus, the maxillary barbel reaching beyond the middle of the eye, an incision in the middle of the upper lip, and the colour pattern on the flank mottled, not interrupted by an unpigmented zone along the lateral line. Oxynoemacheilus euphraticus from the Euphrates and Tigris drainages is a valid species: it is discussed and re-diagnosed against O. argyrogramma.

The Lake Van basin located in eastern Anatolia is inhabited by two species of Alburnus: Alburnus tarichi is a migratory species foraging in the lake and spawning in all tributaries, while A. timarensis is resident in streams and is known only from one tributary of the lake, the Karasu. It could be shown that A. timarensis is a valid species, which is rediagnosed here. Both species are syntopic during the spawning season, but are well distinguished by size, gill raker and lateral line scale counts.

We conducted a fish survey in 40 lakes in western and central Turkey. Fifty species (one to eleven per lake) were recorded, including eighteen endemic and seven alien species. We investigated which local geo-climatic and other environmental variables shaped the fish assemblages. Altitude and temperature turned out to be the most important factors for total species richness as well as richness of omnivorous and zooplanktivorous species and the Shannon–Wiener diversity index, with more species and higher diversity occurring in the warmer lowland lakes. Altitude may affect the fish assemblage directly through dispersal limitation or indirectly by creating a gradient in temperature with which it was strongly correlated. Cyprinidae was the most species-rich and widespread family. Atherinidae, Gobiidae, and Mugilidae (families of marine origin) were mainly found in the lowland regions, while Salmonidae exclusively appeared in the high-altitude lakes. The presence of widely distributed translocated native and alien species revealed a large human impact on the fish assemblages, potentially threatening the rich endemic fish fauna in lakes in this region. © 2016, Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

The Prussian Carp, Carassius gibelio (Bloch, 1782), was first reported from the European part of Turkey in 1988. Today, it seems to be widespread and may occur in all larger water bodies. The authors discuss whether this species has really invaded Trace during the last 10–15 years. It might previously have been confused with C. carassius.

DNA barcoding is a fast and reliable tool for species identification, and has been successfully applied to a wide range of freshwater fishes. The limitations reported were mainly attributed to effects of geographic scale, taxon-sampling, incomplete lineage sorting, or mitochondrial introgression. However, the metrics for the success of assigning unknown samples to species or genera also depend on a suited taxonomic framework. A simultaneous use of the mitochondrial COI and the nuclear RHO gene turned out to be advantageous for the barcode efficiency in a few previous studies. Here, we examine 14 cyprinid fish genera, with a total of 74 species, where standard DNA barcoding failed to identify closely related species unambiguously. Eight of the genera (Acanthobrama, Alburnus, Chondrostoma, Gobio, Mirogrex, Phoxinus, Scardinius, and Squalius) contain species that exhibit very low interspecific divergence, or haplotype sharing (12 species pairs) with presumed introgression based on mtCOI data. We aimed to test the utility of the nuclear rhodopsin marker to uncover reasons for the high similarity and haplotype sharing in these different groups. The included labeonine species belonging to Crossocheilus, Hemigrammocapoeta, Tylognathus and Typhlogarra were found to be nested within the genus Garra based on mtCOI. This specific taxonomic uncertainty was also addressed by the use of the additional nuclear marker. As a measure of the delineation success we computed barcode gaps, which were present in 75% of the species based on mtCOI, but in only 39% based on nuclear rhodopsin sequences. Most cases where standard barcodes failed to offer unambiguous species identifications could not be resolved by adding the nuclear marker. However, in the labeonine cyprinids included, nuclear rhodopsin data generally supported the lineages as defined by the mitochondrial marker. This suggests that mitochondrial patterns were not mislead by introgression, but are caused by an inadequate taxonomy. Our findings support the transfer of the studied species of Crossocheilus, Hemigrammocapoeta, Tylognathus and Typhlogarra to Garra.

As First Revisers, we give priority to Aphanius fontinalis over A. altus and A. litoralis and to A. meridionalis over A. parvus. A neotype is designated from Lake Egirdir for Aphanius iconii . Family groups in the deeply polyphyletic fish family Cyprinodontidae are discussed. Aphaniidae, Cubanichthyidae and Orestiidae are proposed as distinct families, restricting the family Cyprinodontidae to the New World genera Cualac , Cyprinodon , Floridichthys , Jordanella and Megupsilon.

Relationships between total (TL), fork (FL) and standard (SL) lengths belonging 19 families from Aegean and Marmara coast of Turkey were presented for 42 fish species. The relationships between TL, FL and SL were all linear and they were all highly significant (P< 0.001) with all $r^2$ values being > 0.90. There were significant differences in the slope of length & #8211; length relationships between some localities and type of length conversions for the fish species.

Summary The relation between length (L) and weight (W) was estimated for 32 species representing 12 families of fishes from six water resources in the Marmara region, Turkey. The parameter b ranged from 2.66 to 3.56. For 12 species length–weight relationships were not previously available.

Although technical advances have boosted the power of molecular biodiversity assessments, the link between DNA sequences and species and the analytics to discriminate entities remain crucial. Here, we present an analysis of the first DNA barcode library for the freshwater fish fauna of the Mediterranean BH (526 spp.), with virtually complete species coverage (498 spp., 98% extant species). In order to build an identification system supporting conservation, we compared species determination by taxonomists to multiple clustering analyses of DNA barcodes for 3165 specimens. The congruence of barcode clusters with morphological determination was strongly dependent on the method of cluster delineation, but was highest with the general mixed Yule-coalescent (GMYC) model-based approach (83% of all species recovered as GMYC entity). Overall, genetic morphological discontinuities suggest the existence of up to 64 previously unrecognized candidate species. We found reduced identification accuracy when using the entire DNA-barcode database, compared with analyses on databases for individual river catchments. This scale effect has important implications for barcoding assessments and suggests that fairly simple identification pipelines provide sufficient resolution in local applications. We calculated Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered scores in order to identify candidate species for conservation priority and argue that the evolutionary content of barcode data can be used to detect priority species for future IUCN assessments. We show that large-scale barcoding inventories of complex biotas are feasible and contribute directly to the evaluation of conservation priorities.

We reconstructed the matrilineal phylogeny of Asian algae-eating fishes of the genus Capoeta based on complete mitochondrial gene for cytochrome b sequences obtained from 20 species sampled from the majority of the range and 44 species of closely related barbs of the genera Barbus s. str. and Luciobarbus. The results of this study show that Capoeta forms a strongly supported monophyletic subclade nested within the Luciobarbus clade, suggesting that specialized scraping morphology appeared once in the evolutionary history of the genus. We detected three main groups of Capoeta: the Mesopotamian group, which includes three species from the Tigris–Euphrates system and adjacent water bodies, the Anatolian– Iranian group, which has the most diversified structure and encompasses many species distributed throughout Anatolian and Iranian inland waters, and the Aralo-Caspian group, which consists of species distributed in basins of the Caspian and Aral Seas, including many dead-end rivers in Central Asia and Northern Iran. The most probable origination pathway of the genus Capoeta is hypothesized to occur as a result of allopolyploidization. The origin of Capoeta was found around the Langhian–Serravallian boundary according to our molecular clock. Background Leuciscinae is a subfamily belonging to the Cyprinidae fish family that is widely distributed in Circum-Mediterranean region. Many efforts have been carried out to deciphering the evolutionary history of this group. Thus, different biogeographical scenarios have tried to explain the colonization of Europe and Mediterranean area by cyprinids, such as the "north dispersal" or the "Lago Mare dispersal" models. Most recently, Pleistocene glaciations influenced the distribution of leuciscins, especially in North and Central Europe. Weighing up these biogeographical scenarios, this paper constitutes not only the first attempt at deciphering the mitochondrial and nuclear relationships of Mediterranean leuciscins but also a test of biogeographical hypotheses that could have determined the current distribution of Circum-Mediterranean leuciscins. Results A total of 4439 characters (mitochondrial + nuclear) from 321 individuals of 176 leuciscine species rendered a well-supported phylogeny, showing fourteen main lineages. Analyses of independent mitochondrial and nuclear markers supported the same main lineages, but basal relationships were not concordant. Moreover, some incongruence was found among independent mitochondrial and nuclear phylogenies. The monophyly of some poorly known genera such as Pseudophoxinus and Petroleuciscus was rejected. Representatives of both genera belong to different evolutionary lineages. Timing of cladogenetic events among the main leuciscine lineages was gained using mitochondrial and all genes data set. Conclusions Adaptations to a predatory lifestyle or miniaturization have superimposed the morphology of some species. These species have been separated into different genera, which are not supported by a phylogenetic framework. Such is the case of the genera Pseudophoxinus and Petroleuciscus, which real taxonomy is not well known. The diversification of leuciscine lineages has been determined by intense vicariant events following the paleoclimatological and hydrogeological history of Mediterranean region. We propose different colonization models of Mediterranean region during the early Oligocene. Later vicariance events promoted Leuciscinae diversification during Oligocene and Miocene periods. Our data corroborate the presence of leuciscins in North Africa before the Messinian salinity crisis. Indeed, Messinian period appears as a stage of gradually Leuciscinae diversification. The rise of humidity at the beginning of the Pliocene promoted the colonization and posterior isolation of newly established freshwater populations. Marmara Bölgesi’nde (Türkiye) tatlısu balığı Chondrostoma angorense Elvira, 1987 (Osteichtyes: Cyprinidae) için yeni bir lokalite. Sakarya Nehri havzasından ilk Chondrostoma türü C. nasus olarak 1987 yılında rapor edildi. Sapanca Gölü’nden ise 1966 yılında rapor verildi. Ancak, 1987 yılında Sapanca Gölü’ndeki örneğin üzerinde yapılan dikkatli incelemeler aslında türün Vimba vimba olduğunu ortaya çıkardı. Bu çalışmada, Sapanca Gölü’nden C. angorense’nin ilk raporu verildi. Bu türün tanınma özellikleri ve koruma durumu tartışıldı
