Kemper [sup.4] , [...], Background Infantile nephropathic cystinosis (INC) is a systemic lysosomal storage disease causing intracellular cystine accumulation, resulting in renal Fanconi syndrome, progressive kidney disease (CKD), rickets, malnutrition, and myopathy. An INC-specific disproportionately diminished trunk length compared to leg length poses questions regarding the functionality of the trunk. Methods Thus, we prospectively investigated thoracic dimensions and proportions, as well as their clinical determinants in 44 pediatric patients with INC with CKD stages 1-5 and 97 age-matched patients with CKD of other etiology between the ages of 2-17 years. A total of 92 and 221 annual measurements of patients with INC and CKD, respectively, were performed, and associations between anthropometric and clinical parameters were assessed using linear mixed-effects models. Results Patients with INC exhibited altered chest dimensions that were distinct from CKD controls, characterized by markedly increased chest depth to height and chest depth to chest width ratio z-scores (> 1.0), while those of patients with CKD were only mildly affected (z-score within ± 1.0). Ratio z-scores differed significantly between both patient groups from 2-6 years of age onward. The degree of chest disproportion in INC patients was significantly associated with both the degree of CKD and tubular dysfunction (e.g., low serum phosphate and bicarbonate) across three different age groups (2-6, 7-12, and 13-17 years). Conclusion Our data show an INC-specific alteration in thoracic shape from early childhood onward, which is distinct from CKD of other etiologies, suggesting early childhood subclinical changes of the musculoskeletal unit of the thoracic cage, which are associated with kidney function. Abstract

Based on recent ideas, we propose a framework for the description of black holes in terms of constituent graviton degrees of freedom. Within this formalism a large black hole can be understood as a bound state of N longitudinal gravitons. In this context black holes are similar to baryonic bound states in quantum chromodynamics which are described by fundamental quark degrees of freedom. As a quantitative tool we employ a quantum bound state description originally developed in QCD that allows to consider black holes in a relativistic Hartree like framework. As an application of our framework we calculate the cross section for scattering processes between graviton emitters outside of a Schwarzschild black hole and absorbers in its interior, that is gravitons. We show that these scatterings allow to directly extract structural observables such as the momentum distribution of black hole constituents., Comment: Extended version, accepted for publication in JHEP

Abstract

A theory of a non-relativistic, complex scalar field with derivatively coupled interaction terms is investigated. This toy model is considered as a prototype of a classicalizing theory and in particular of general relativity, for which the black hole constitutes a prominent example of a classicalon. Accordingly, the theory allows for a non-trivial solution of the stationary Gross-Pitaevskii equation corresponding to a black hole in the case of GR. Quantum fluctuations on this classical background are investigated within the Bogoliubov approximation. It turns out that the perturbative approach is invalidated by a high occupation of the Bogoliubov modes. Recently, it was proposed that a black hole is a Bose-Einstein condensate of gravitons that dynamically ensures to stay at the verge of a quantum phase transition. Abstract

The European Plant Science Retreat (EPSR) is an annual event that brings together early career plant scientists to develop their scientific network. This year, the EPSR took place at Wageningen University in the Netherlands, with close to 70 PhD candidates from nine different countries participating. The event included poster presentations, talks, workshops, and excursions, covering a wide range of research areas in plant science. Topics discussed included plant development, responses to abiotic stresses, evolutionary biology, genetics, biophysics, and biotechnology. The retreat also addressed important issues such as scientific integrity and the well-being of graduate students. The organizers of the EPSR expressed their satisfaction with the event and look forward to the next edition in Paris in 2024. [Extracted from the article]

Abstract

In 1986, a Franco-Israeli team of scholars set out to document the liturgy of the Beta ʾƎsrāʾel, a group of Ethiopian Jews which at the time was in the process of making aliyah under dramatic circumstances. The scholars gathered a group of priests in Israel and produced an impressive corpus of recordings, covering important parts of the liturgical tradition. Over the past decades, the team has been publishing their results in a number of articles and monographs, and in 2019 presented a selection of recordings in the form of a CD box. The box contains three CDs plus a bilingual booklet with information about the liturgical tradition of the Beta ʾƎsrāʾel: their music, prayers, and ritual practices. In this review article, the research results presented in the booklet are evaluated, with special attention paid to the effects that migration has had on the Beta ʾƎsrāʾel liturgical tradition.

Abstract

The manuscript tradition of the Betä Ǝsraʾel, the Jews of Ethiopia, has not been studied before. This article aims to provide a first tentative analysis of a number of features of the Betä Ǝsraʾel manuscript tradition, hoping to contribute to a new understanding of this phenomenon. The Betä Ǝsraʾel lived in close coexistence, albeit not always peaceful, with Christian Ethiopians. The Christian manuscripts must be seen as the starting point from which the Betä Ǝsraʾel developed their own tradition, by adopting and adapting scribal features. Previous scholarly works on the Betä Ǝsraʾel have focused mostly on their texts, leaving the carriers of these texts aside. When commenting on the manuscripts, scholars commonly made negative remarks about their quality: a misjudgment that this article hopes to overcome. Some 70 Betä Ǝsraʾel manuscripts have been examined for this study, resulting in new descriptions of their features and even discovering one genuinely new feature.

Abstract

Ratgebermedien sind nahezu allgegenwärtig. In Buchform, im Zeitschriftenformat und auch im Internet bieten sie potentiellen Rezipientinnen und Rezipienten vielfältige Appelle und Strategien zur Optimierung des eigenen Verhaltens oder des Verhaltens anderer hinsichtlich Gesundheit, Pflege, Erziehung, Glück, Erfolg, Sich-Kleiden, Styling, Beauty, gesundem Kochen und zahlreichen weiteren Themen. Ratgebermedien existieren jedoch nicht nur für erwachsene Personengruppen wie Eltern oder Lehrkräfte, sondern auch für Kinder. Im Vergleich zur Elternratgeberforschung bilden das Angebot von Ratgebermedien für Kinder und ihre Inanspruchnahme durch Kinder bislang allerdings ein Forschungsdesiderat. Diesem Zustand begegnet der vorliegende Beitrag durch eine qualitative Explorationsstudie, in der die Inanspruchnahme von Ratgebermedien bei sechs- bis dreizehnjährigen Kindern hinsichtlich der medialen Formate und Themen untersucht wurde. Hierfür wurden neben vier Expertinnengesprächen 30 Interviews mit Kindern im Alter von sechs bis 13 Jahren inhaltsanalytisch ausgewertet. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass in der mittleren Kindheit eine hohe thematische Vielfalt an Anleitungen, Ratschlägen und Tipps mittels verschiedener Medien in Anspruch genommen wird.
