Abstract: The ASTRI Mini-Array (MA) is an INAF project to build and operate a facility to study astronomical sources emitting at very high-energy in the TeV spectral band. The ASTRI MA consists of a group of nine innovative Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The telescopes will be installed at the Teide Astronomical Observatory of the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC) in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain) on the basis of a host agreement with INAF. Thanks to its expected overall performance, better than those of current Cherenkov telescopes' arrays for energies above \sim 5 TeV and up to 100 TeV and beyond, the ASTRI MA will represent an important instrument to perform deep observations of the Galactic and extra-Galactic sky at these energies., Comment: 19 pages, 22 figures

2. B–T phase diagram of Pd/Fe/Ir(111) computed with parallel tempering Monte Carlo

Abstract: We use an atomistic spin model derived from density functional theory calculations for the ultra-thin film Pd/Fe/Ir(111) to show that temperature induces coexisting non-zero skyrmion and antiskyrmion densities. We apply the parallel tempering Monte Carlo method in order to reliably compute thermodynamical quantities and the B – T phase diagram in the presence of frustrated exchange interactions. We evaluate the critical temperatures using the topological susceptibility. We show that the critical temperatures depend on the magnetic field in contrast to previous work. In total, we identify five phases: spin spiral, skyrmion lattice, ferromagnetic phase, intermediate region with finite topological charge and paramagnetic phase. To explore the effect of frustrated exchange interactions, we calculate the B – T phase diagram, when only effective exchange parameters are taken into account.

Abstract: The Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud is known for its high star formation activity. At its center lies the young massive star cluster R136, providing a significant amount of the energy that makes the nebula shine so brightly at many wavelengths. Recently, young massive star clusters have been suggested to also efficiently produce very high-energy cosmic rays, potentially beyond PeV energies. Here, we report the detection of very-high-energy γ -ray emission from the direction of R136 with the High Energy Stereoscopic System, achieved through a multicomponent, likelihood-based modeling of the data. This supports the hypothesis that R136 is indeed a very powerful cosmic-ray accelerator. Moreover, from the same analysis, we provide an updated measurement of the γ -ray emission from 30 Dor C, the only superbubble detected at TeV energies presently. The γ -ray luminosity above 0.5 TeV of both sources is (2–3) × 10 ^35 erg s ^−1 . This exceeds by more than a factor of 2 the luminosity of HESS J1646−458, which is associated with the most massive young star cluster in the Milky Way, Westerlund 1. Furthermore, the γ -ray emission from each source is extended with a significance of >3 σ and a Gaussian width of about 30 pc. For 30 Dor C, a connection between the γ -ray emission and the nonthermal X-ray emission appears likely. Different interpretations of the γ -ray signal from R136 are discussed.

Abstract: The European Sentinel missions and the latest generation of the United States Landsat satellites provide new opportunities for global environmental monitoring. They acquire imagery at spatial resolutions between 10 and 60 m in a temporal and spatial coverage that could before only be realized on the basis of lower resolution Earth observation data ( $ > $ 250 m). However, images gathered by these modern missions rapidly add up to data volume that can no longer be handled with standard work stations and software solutions. Hence, this contribution introduces the TimeScan concept which combines pre-existing tools to an exemplary modular pipeline for the flexible and scalable processing of massive image data collections on a variety of (private or public) computing clusters. The TimeScan framework covers solutions for data access to arbitrary mission archives (with different data provisioning policies) and data ingestion into a processing environment (EO2Data module), mission specific pre-processing of multi-temporal data collections (Data2TimeS module), and the generation of a final TimeScan baseline product (TimeS2Stats module) providing a spectrally and temporally harmonized representation of the observed surfaces. Technically, a TimeScan layer aggregates the information content of hundreds or thousands of single images available for the area and time period of interest (i.e. up to hundreds of TBs or even PBs of data) into a higher level product with significantly reduced volume. In first test, the TimeScan pipeline has been used to process a global coverage of 452,799 multispectral Landsat–8 scenes acquired from 2013 to 2015, a global data-set of 25,550 Envisat ASAR radar images collected 2010–2012, and regional Sentinel–1 and Sentinel–2 collections of $ \sim $ 1500 images acquired from 2014 to 2016. The resulting TimeScan products have already been successfully used in various studies related to the large-scale monitoring of environmental processes and their temporal dynamics.

Abstract: The ASTRI Mini-Array is a next-generation system of nine imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes that is going to be built at the Observatorio del Teide site. After a first phase, in which the instrument will be operated as an experiment prioritizing a schedule of primary science cases, an observatory phase is foreseen in which other significant targets will be pointed. We focus on the observational feasibility of extragalactic sources and on astrophysical processes that best complement and expand the ASTRI Mini-Array core science, presenting the most relevant examples that are at reach of detection over long-term time scales and whose observation can provide breakthrough achievements in the very-high energy extragalactic science. Such examples cover a wide range of $\gamma$-ray emitters, including the study of AGN low states in the multi-TeV energy range, the possible detection of Seyfert galaxies with long exposures and the searches of dark matter lines above 10 TeV. Abstract: We present multiwavelength observations and a model for flat spectrum radio quasar NVSS J141922-083830, originally classified as a blazar candidate of unknown type (BCU II object) in the Third Fermi-LAT AGN Catalog (3LAC). Relatively bright flares (>3 magnitudes) were observed on 21 February 2015 (MJD 57074) and 8 September 2018 (MJD 58369) in the optical band with the MASTER Global Robotic Net (MASTER-Net) telescopes. Optical spectra obtained with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) on 1 March 2015 (MJD 57082), during outburst, and on 30 May 2017 (MJD 57903), during quiescence, showed emission lines at 5325\r{A} and at $\approx$3630\r{A} that we identified as the Mg II 2798\r{A} and C III] 1909\r{A} lines, respectively, and hence derived a redshift z = 0.903. Analysis of Fermi-LAT data was performed in the quiescent regime (5 years of data) and during four prominent flaring states in February-April 2014, October-November 2014, February-March 2015 and September 2018. We present spectral and timing analysis with Fermi-LAT. We report a hardening of the gamma-ray spectrum during the last three flaring periods, with a power-law spectral index $\Gamma = 2.0$-$2.1$. The maximum gamma-ray flux level was observed on 24 October 2014 (MJD 56954) at $(7.57 \pm 1.83) \times 10^{-7}$ ph~cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. The multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution during the February-March 2015 flare supports the earlier evidence of this blazar to belong to the FSRQ class. The SED can be well represented with a single-zone leptonic model with parameters typical of FSRQs, but also a hadronic origin of the high-energy emission can not be ruled out., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, 8 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS (29 July 2022)

Abstract: GRB221009A is the brightest gamma-ray burst ever detected. To probe the very-high-energy (VHE, $>$\!100 GeV) emission, the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) began observations 53 hours after the triggering event, when the brightness of the moonlight no longer precluded observations. We derive differential and integral upper limits using H.E.S.S. data from the third, fourth, and ninth nights after the initial GRB detection, after applying atmospheric corrections. The combined observations yield an integral energy flux upper limit of $\Phi_\mathrm{UL}^{95\%} = 9.7 \times 10^{-12}~\mathrm{erg\,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$ above $E_\mathrm{thr} = 650$ GeV. The constraints derived from the H.E.S.S. observations complement the available multiwavelength data. The radio to X-ray data are consistent with synchrotron emission from a single electron population, with the peak in the SED occurring above the X-ray band. Compared to the VHE-bright GRB190829A, the upper limits for GRB221009A imply a smaller gamma-ray to X-ray flux ratio in the afterglow. Even in the absence of a detection, the H.E.S.S. upper limits thus contribute to the multiwavelength picture of GRB221009A, effectively ruling out an IC dominated scenario., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. Abstract: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society 515(1), 1365 - 1379 (2022). doi:10.1093/mnras/stac1601, We report on a search for persistent radio emission from the one-off fast radio burst (FRB) 20190714A, as well as from two repeating FRBs, 20190711A and 20171019A, using the MeerKAT radio telescope. For FRB 20171019A, we also conducted simultaneous observations with the High-Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in very high-energy gamma rays and searched for signals in the ultraviolet, optical, and X-ray bands. For this FRB, we obtain a UV flux upper limit of |$1.39 \times 10^{-16}~{\rm erg\, cm^{-2}\, s^{-1}}$|Å^−1, X-ray limit of |$\sim 6.6 \times 10^{-14}~{\rm erg\, cm^{-2}\, s^{-1}}$| and a limit on the very high energy gamma-ray flux |$\Phi (E\gt 120\, {\rm GeV}) \lt 1.7\times 10^{-12}\, \mathrm{erg\, cm^{-2}\, s^{-1}}$|⁠. We obtain a radio upper limit of ∼15 |$\mu$|Jy beam^−1 for persistent emission at the locations of both FRBs 20190711A and 20171019A with MeerKAT. However, we detected an almost unresolved (ratio of integrated flux to peak flux is ∼1.7 beam) radio emission, where the synthesized beam size was ∼ 8 arcsec size with a peak brightness of |$\sim 53\, \mu$|Jy beam^−1 at MeerKAT and |$\sim 86\, \mu$|Jy beam^−1 at e-MERLIN, possibly associated with FRB 20190714A at z = 0.2365. This represents the first detection of persistent continuum radio emission potentially associated with a (as-yet) non-repeating FRB. If the association is confirmed, one of the strongest remaining distinction between repeaters and non-repeaters would no longer be applicable. A parallel search for repeat bursts from these FRBs revealed no new detections down to a fluence of 0.08 Jy ms for a 1 ms duration burst., Published by Oxford Univ. Press, Oxford

Abstract: A deep survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud at ~0.1-100TeV photon energies with the Cherenkov Telescope Array is planned. We assess the detection prospects based on a model for the emission of the galaxy, comprising the four known TeV emitters, mock populations of sources, and interstellar emission on galactic scales. We also assess the detectability of 30 Doradus and SN 1987A, and the constraints that can be derived on the nature of dark matter. The survey will allow for fine spectral studies of N157B, N132D, LMC P3, and 30 Doradus C, and half a dozen other sources should be revealed, mainly pulsar-powered objects. The remnant from SN 1987A could be detected if it produces cosmic-ray nuclei with a flat power-law spectrum at high energies, or with a steeper index 2.3-2.4 pending a flux increase by a factor >3-4 over ~2015-2035. Large-scale interstellar emission remains mostly out of reach of the survey if its >10GeV spectrum has a soft photon index ~2.7, but degree-scale 0.1-10TeV pion-decay emission could be detected if the cosmic-ray spectrum hardens above >100GeV. The 30 Doradus star-forming region is detectable if acceleration efficiency is on the order of 1-10% of the mechanical luminosity and diffusion is suppressed by two orders of magnitude within, Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Abstract: Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) is the only curative treatment option for a number of hematologic malignancies. Its therapeutic potential relies on the potency of donor T cells to eliminate residual malignant cells, the so-called graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effect. Disease relapse remains the most frequent treatment failure and is associated with poor outcome. Therefore, it is inevitable to decipher mechanisms that weaken GVL. In recent years, studies of tumor biology have revealed that metabolic remodeling of the micromilieu can critically regulate immune responses. Accumulation of reactive oxygen species leads to a metabolic condition known as oxidative stress, which can severely hamper T cells. Currently, only a few studies, mainly using preclinical models, have demonstrated the occurrence of oxidative stress after allo-SCTs. Therefore, we sought to investigate oxidative stress in a well-characterized group of patients who underwent allo-SCT and its impact on reconstituting T cells. We identified high concentrations of serum 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) as an established biomarker for oxidative stress. 8-OHdG is one of the major products of DNA oxidation, which is normally rapidly removed. After allo-SCT, T cells accumulated oxidative DNA damage. High cellular 8-OHdG content (8-OHdGhi) was associated not only with signs of enhanced T-cell activation but also premature exhaustion. The inability of 8-OHdGhi T cells to efficiently target malignant cells or produce cytotoxic granzyme B and interferon gamma was associated with a significantly increased relapse risk and a shorter overall survival. Taken together, our novel findings could give reason to focus on bolstering DNA repair in reconstituting T cells as a means to improve GVL efficacy.

16. Challenges and novel approaches for the development of hardware-related trustworthy electronics

Abstract: Emerging and future electronic components and systems must not only meet cost, performance, reliability, miniaturization and environmental requirements, they must also be trustworthy. In the near future, we have to trust even more electronic components and systems in everyday life, such as those used in self-driving cars or service robots. In this contribution, we present the challenges and novel approaches for the development of hardware-related trustworthy electronics. Our proposed solutions cover all aspects of the value chain starting with the confidentiality of secure production chains, the security against manipulation as well as technological sovereignty. These novel approaches are extensively investigated with partners from academia and industry in R&D projects within the framework of the German Flagship initiative “Trustworthy Electronics”. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as a contribution to research and innovation for technological sovereignty fund this initiative. In this paper, we will report on the latest research results of the implementation of our approaches at four key levels, namely wafer, board, system and platform levels. In the area of wafer level packaging, the focus is on developing solutions for the implementation of trustworthy heterogeneous systems using high-frequency chips in combination with complex signal processing. At board-level, the goal is to develop a universal electro-optical interposer, particularly taking into account security features (e.g. key generation and encryption / decryption, design of photonic expandable RISC-V peripheral components). At system-level, we focus on the development of processes and multi-sensor systems that protect important microelectronic circuits from criminal attacks. The entire system has to be protected by hierarchically graded monitoring, by embedded sensors and its corresponding microcontrollers. The development of the packaging and interconnection technology is supplemented by non-destructive testing methods that monitor the integrity of the protective mechanisms. The approach pursued here does not require any modification of the structure of the circuits to be protected and can be combined with all safety-critical application circuits. With this cost-effective solution, small series production is also economically feasible. Finally, at the platform-level, overreaching issues are investigated within the three pillars, namely design, production and analysis of the microelectronic value chain. The platform concentrates predominantly on contributions to the necessary standardization. This enables companies effectively to support the supply of trustworthy electronics, especially with regard to small series.

Prompt optical emission was detected by MASTER-SAAO 38 s after the alert, which dimmed from a magnitude (white-light) of ∼10-16.2 mag over a period of ∼10 ks, followed by a plateau phase lasting ∼10 ks and then a decline to ∼18 mag after 80 ks. The light curve shows complex structure, with four or five distinct breaks in the power-law decline rate. SALT/RSS linear spectropolarimetry of the afterglow began ∼2.9 h after the burst, during the early part of the plateau phase of the light curve. Absorption lines seen at ∼6010 and 5490 Å are identified with the Mg ii 2799 Å line from the host galaxy at z = 1.15 and an intervening system located at z = 0.96. The mean linear polarization measured over 3400-8000 Å was ∼1.5 per cent and the mean equatorial position angle (θ) was ∼65°. VLT/FORS2 spectropolarimetry was obtained ∼10 h post-burst, during a period of slow decline (α = -0.44), and the polarization was measured to be p = 1.2 per cent and θ = 60°. Two observations with the MeerKAT radio telescope, taken 30 and 444 d after the GRB trigger, detected radio emission from the host galaxy only. Abstract: Despite numerous studies, the origin of the gamma-ray emission from blazars is still debated, in particular whether it is produced by leptonic or hadronic processes. In this study, we are testing the leptonic scenario for the Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar (FSRQ) 3C 279, assuming that the gamma-ray emission is generated by inverse Compton scattering of external target photons from Broad Line Region (IC-BLR scenario). For this purpose we use a 10-year data set of the source consisting of the optical spectroscopy data from the Steward Observatory blazar monitoring program and Fermi-LAT gamma-ray data. We search for a possible correlation between the Compton dominance and the emission line luminosity using the discrete correlation function (DCF) analysis. As a result, we find no significant correlation between these two quantities at any time lag value, while the emission line luminosity displays a moderate correlation with the gamma-ray flux at a zero time lag. We also reveal that the optical synchrotron continuum flux shows a pronounced correlation with the gamma-ray flux, and therefore we interpret these results within the leptonic IC-BLR scenario where the Compton dominance variations are primarily induced by changes in the magnetic field, rather than in the emission line luminosity., 16 pages, 5 figures. Abstract: The ASTRI (Astrofisica con Specchi a Tecnologia Replicante Italiana) Project led by the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) is developing and will deploy at the Observatorio del Teide a mini-array (ASTRI Mini-Array) composed of nine telescopes similar to the small-size dual-mirror Schwarzschild-Couder telescope (ASTRI-Horn) currently operating on the slopes of Mt. Etna in Sicily. The ASTRI Mini-Array will surpass the current Cherenkov telescope array differential sensitivity above a few tera-electronvolt (TeV), extending the energy band well above hundreds of TeV. This will allow us to explore a new window of the electromagnetic spectrum, by convolving the sensitivity performance with excellent angular and energy resolution figures. Die Therapieprogramme basieren auf der Steigerung der Bewegung, Verhaltenstherapie, Ernährungsberatung und psychologischer Betreuung. Psychosoziale familiäre Problemkonstellationen erhöhen das Risiko der Adipositasentstehung und haben einen negativen Einfluss auf den Behandlungserfolg. Bariatrische Chirurgie zeigt gute Ergebnisse bezüglich der Gewichtsreduktion postoperativ, jedoch fehlen Langzeitdaten, um besser das langfristige Outcome bewerten zu können. Effektive Strategien zur Adipositas-Prävention sind notwendig.

Abstract: BackgroundQuantitative computer tomography (QCT) has emerged as a screening tool for opportunistic measurements of volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) from clinical CT scans, enabling early diagnosis of osteoporosis. However, intravenous contrast media administered during clinical CT examinations, calibration methods as well as different scan phases may influence vBMD and must be considered.1 Calibration methods include synchronous and asynchronous CT phantoms as well as phantom-less internal calibration.ObjectivesTo investigate the effect of intravenous contrast media on QCT-measured vBMD. Furthermore, to review the effects of different calibration methods and scan protocols on vBMD.MethodsIn this systematic literature review, two independent reviewers (AH and AC) conducted a blinded screening for articles involving human participants who had undergone a contrast and non-contrast CT scan to measure vBMD. A total of 1,981 studies, published between 01.01.2000 and 17.01.2021, were screened and 9 eligible studies were included. A meta-analysis was conducted and standard mean differences (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated and presented in a forest-plot. Quality of studies was rated by the preliminary ROBINS-E risk of bias tool.2ResultsIn total, the 9 studies included 515 patients. On average the vBMD SMD changed 0.45 (95% CI: 0.24-0.67, P < .0001) from non-contrast to contrast-enhanced (CE) scans at the lumbar region (Figure 1). Phantom-based QCT had a SMD of 0.64 (95% CI: 0.33-0.94, P < .0001) and phantom-less QCT had a SMD of 0.20 (95% CI: -0.00-0.40, P = 0.05). Subgroup analyses showed a mean arterial phase vBMD SMD of 0.29 (95% CI: 0.12-0.45 P < .0008) and a venous phase vBMD of 0.56 (95% CI: 0.30-0.81, P < .0001). All studies were deemed to have moderate or serious risk of bias by the ROBINS-E tool.Figure 1.Meta-analysis of standardized mean difference in lumbar spine vBMD (mg/cm3) change from non-contrast enhanced (non-CE) CT scans and contrast enhanced (CE) CT scans.ConclusionQCT-measured vBMD is higher in CE scans in both phantom-based and phantom-less scans compared to non-contrast CT. Our meta-analysis suggest that contrast has a larger impact on vBMD in phantombased vs. phantom-less and in venous phase scans vs. arterial phase scans, underlining not only the time-dependency but also the dependency of the calibration method. Arterial phase CT scans using internal calibration may be preferred when measuring vBMD in a clinical setting without an adjusting conversion factor. 23. POS1151 OPPORTUNISTIC BONE MINERAL DENSITY SCREENING IN PATIENTS UNDERGOING CARDIAC CT SCANS: EFFECT OF USING IMAGES CONTAINING INTRAVENOUS CONTRAST

Abstract: BackgroundOsteoporosis is under-diagnosed worldwide causing increased risk of fractures and death (1). Computed tomography (CT) scans performed on other indications such as coronary artery disease harbor the potential for automatic detection of low volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) of the vertebrae using quantitative CT (QCT); hence allowing estimation of future fracture risk (2). CT is often performed with intravenous (iv) contrast administration. In 2015, the International Society of Clinical Densitometry stated: “There is insufficient evidence to judge the effect of contrast agents on a classification of low BMD” (3); this position remains. Thus, it is important to assess the effect of contrast enhancement in order to broaden the potential of vBMD screening using routine CT scans.ObjectivesWe aimed to compare thoracic vBMD measurements from CT scans with and without iv contrast enhancement.MethodsThis cross-sectional multicenter sub-study is based on a larger clinical trial, Dan-NICAD-1, from which we randomly selected a cohort of 136 participants. First, a non-contrast scan was performed followed by a contrast-enhanced scan during which 60-90mL of iv contrast was administered (Iomeron, 350 mgI/mL). Mindways QCT Pro software was used to measure BMD values (mg/cm3) and the mean estimate was calculated for each participant (4). American College of Radiology quantitative CT cut-off values for lumbar spine were used to categorize patients into very low (3), low (80-120mg/cm3), or normal BMD (>120mg/cm3).ResultsIn 136 participants undergoing cardiac CT (Table 1), we found a different mean vBMD before vs. after contrast; 117.5 mg/cm3 [95%CI: 111.6–123.4] vs. 132.1 mg/cm3 [95%CI: 125.1–139.1], p. The absolute difference was 14.7mg/cm3 [95%CI: 12.3–17.0]; the relative difference, was 12.5% [95% CI: 10.5–14.5]. In total, 8/15 (53%) participants changed from very low BMD to low BMD after contrast administration, and 21 participants (21/63, 33%) changed from low to normal BMD (Figure 1). Abstract: The KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment, which aims to make a direct and model-independent determination of the absolute neutrino mass scale, is a complex experiment with many components. More than 15 years ago, we published a technical design report (TDR) [https://publikationen.bibliothek.kit.edu/270060419] to describe the hardware design and requirements to achieve our sensitivity goal of 0.2 eV at 90% C.L. on the neutrino mass. Since then there has been considerable progress, culminating in the publication of first neutrino mass results with the entire beamline operating [arXiv:1909.06048]. Abstract: We report on the light sterile neutrino search from the first four-week science run of the KATRIN experiment in~2019. Beta-decay electrons from a high-purity gaseous molecular tritium source are analyzed by a high-resolution MAC-E filter down to 40 eV below the endpoint at 18.57 keV. We consider the framework with three active neutrinos and one sterile neutrino of mass $m_{4}$. The analysis is sensitive to a fourth mass state $m^2_{4} \lesssim$ 1000 eV$^2$ and to active-to-sterile neutrino mixing down to $|U_{e4}|^2 \gtrsim 2\cdot10^{-2}$. No significant spectral distortion is observed and exclusion bounds on the sterile mass and mixing are reported. These new limits supersede the Mainz results and improve the Troitsk bound for $m^2_{4}, Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: H.E.S.S. Collaboration: et al., We report on the detection of very high energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) γ-ray emission from the BL Lac objects KUV 00311−1938 and PKS 1440−389 with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.). H.E.S.S. observations were accompanied or preceded by multiwavelength observations with Fermi/LAT, XRT and UVOT onboard the Swift satellite, and ATOM. Based on an extrapolation of the Fermi/LAT spectrum towards the VHE γ-ray regime, we deduce a 95 per cent confidence level upper limit on the unknown redshift of KUV 00311−1938 of z < 0.98 and of PKS 1440−389 of z < 0.53. Abstract: Aims Insufficient erythropoietin (EPO) synthesis is a relevant cause of renal anaemia in patients with chronic kidney disease. Molidustat, a selective hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase (HIF-PH) inhibitor, increases endogenous EPO levels dose dependently in preclinical models. We examined the pharmacokinetics, safety, tolerability and effect on EPO levels of single oral doses of molidustat in healthy male volunteers. Methods This was a single-centre, randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled, group-comparison, dose-escalation study. Molidustat was administered at doses of 5, 12.5, 25, 37.5 or 50 mg as a polyethylene glycol-based solution. Results In total, 45 volunteers received molidustat and 14 received placebo. Molidustat was absorbed rapidly, and the mean maximum plasma concentration and area under the concentration-time curve increased dose dependently. The mean terminal half-life was 4.64-10.40 h. A significant increase in endogenous EPO was observed following single oral doses of molidustat of 12.5 mg and above. Geometric mean peak EPO levels were 14.8 IU l-1 (90% confidence interval 13.0, 16.9) for volunteers who received placebo and 39.8 IU l-1 (90% confidence interval: 29.4, 53.8) for those who received molidustat 50 mg. The time course of EPO levels resembled the normal diurnal variation in EPO. Maximum EPO levels were observed approximately 12 h postdose and returned to baseline after approximately 24-48 h. All doses of molidustat were well tolerated and there were no significant changes in vital signs or laboratory safety parameters. Conclusions Oral administration of molidustat to healthy volunteers elicited a dose-dependent increase in endogenous EPO. These results support the ongoing development of molidustat as a potential new treatment for patients with renal anaemia.

Abstract: In Deutschland ereignen sich etwa 2,6 Mio. Verkehrsunfalle/Jahr mit einer relevanten Zahl an Extremitaten‑, Becken- und Wirbelsaulentraumata. Nach der prioritatenorientierten Initialbehandlung des Patienten sollen adaquate Masnahmen gegen Schmerzen und zur Vorbeugung von Weichteilschadigungen ergriffen werden. Bei Extremitatenfrakturen erfolgen die Immobilisation praklinisch und, wenn indiziert, die Reposition unter Analgesie. Die Anlage einer Beckenschlinge kann indiziert sein. Bei Verdacht auf Wirbelsaulenverletzungen sind Palpation, Druck- und Klopfschmerz sowie die Erhebung der peripheren Motorik und Sensibilitat wegweisend. Der Patient wird mithilfe der Vakuummatratze immobilisiert. Eine Verletzung im Halswirbelsaulenbereich wird mithilfe der Zervikalstutze, kombiniert mit einer Ganzkorperimmobilisation, stabilisiert. Bei gleichzeitig vorhandenem Schadel-Hirn-Trauma wird gepruft, ob auf die Zervikalstutze verzichtet werden kann, um einen weiteren Hirndruckanstieg zu minimieren.

Abstract: Aims. Colliding wind binary systems have long been suspected to be high-energy (HE; 100 MeV < E < 100 GeV) {\gamma}-ray emitters. {\eta} Car is the most prominent member of this object class and is confirmed to emit phase-locked HE {\gamma} rays from hundreds of MeV to ~100 GeV energies. This work aims to search for and characterise the very-high-energy (VHE; E >100 GeV) {\gamma}-ray emission from {\eta} Car around the last periastron passage in 2014 with the ground-based High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.). Methods. The region around {\eta} Car was observed with H.E.S.S. between orbital phase p = 0.78 - 1.10, with a closer sampling at p {\approx} 0.95 and p {\approx} 1.10 (assuming a period of 2023 days). Optimised hardware settings as well as adjustments to the data reduction, reconstruction, and signal selection were needed to suppress and take into account the strong, extended, and inhomogeneous night sky background (NSB) in the {\eta} Car field of view. Tailored run-wise Monte-Carlo simulations (RWS) were required to accurately treat the additional noise from NSB photons in the instrument response functions. Results. H.E.S.S. detected VHE {\gamma}-ray emission from the direction of {\eta} Car shortly before and after the minimum in the X-ray light-curve close to periastron. Using the point spread function provided by RWS, the reconstructed signal is point-like and the spectrum is best described by a power law. The overall flux and spectral index in VHE {\gamma} rays agree within statistical and systematic errors before and after periastron. The {\gamma}-ray spectrum extends up to at least ~400 GeV. This implies a maximum magnetic field in a leptonic scenario in the emission region of 0.5 Gauss. Abstract: Contains fulltext : 220376.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) Purpose/Background: Ketamine (K) is used as a party drug with hallucinogenic properties with a half-life of about 2.5 hours. Data are available with respect to the detection window (ie, when a person is still tested positive for the drug and/or metabolite after use) of K after single use. Nevertheless, no data are available with respect to the detection window of K in urine after chronic use. Methods/Procedures: This retrospective case series describes 7 patients with K dependency as their main addiction who have been admitted to an addiction center for K detoxification. Their abstinence-oriented care involved routine urinary screening of K and its metabolites, as well as traditional drugs of abuse, such as cocaine and cannabinoids. Findings/Results: Urine samples remained positive for all the cases identified after 22 to 96 days. A peak detection period of 61, 40, and 96 days for K, norketamine, and dehydronorketamine, respectively, measured using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry at a cutoff concentration of 1.0 ng/mL, is defined. The K/norketamine and K/dehydronorketamine ratios varied over time between 0.33 and 3.06, and 0.01 and 0.36 for all patients, respectively, implying a large interindividual variation in K metabolism. Implications/Conclusions: Ketamine and its metabolites have a prolonged excretion profile in urine, which requires frequent measurements (at least weekly) to guide abstinence treatment. Further research is needed to develop an algorithm that can differentiate new K use from residual urinary K excretion in urine of chronic daily users. 5 p.

Abstract: [Context] PSR B1259–63/LS 2883 is a gamma-ray binary system consisting of a pulsar in an eccentric orbit around a bright Oe stellar-type companion star that features a dense circumstellar disc. The bright broad-band emission observed at phases close to periastron offers a unique opportunity to study particle acceleration and radiation processes in binary systems. Observations at gamma-ray energies constrain these processes through variability and spectral characterisation studies., [Aims] The high- and very-high-energy (HE, VHE) gamma-ray emission from PSR B1259–63/LS 2883 around the times of its periastron passage are characterised, in particular, at the time of the HE gamma-ray flares reported to have occurred in 2011, 2014, and 2017. Short-term and average emission characteristics of PSR B1259–63/LS 2883 are determined. Super-orbital variability is searched for in order to investigate possible cycle-to-cycle VHE flux changes due to different properties of the companion star’s circumstellar disc and/or the conditions under which the HE gamma-ray flares develop., [Methods] Spectra and light curves were derived from observations conducted with the H.E.S.S-II array in 2014 and 2017. Phase-folded light curves are compared with the results obtained in 2004, 2007, and 2011. Fermi-LAT observations from 2010/11, 2014, and 2017 are analysed., [Results] A local double-peak profile with asymmetric peaks in the VHE light curve is measured, with a flux minimum at the time of periastron tp and two peaks coinciding with the times at which the neutron star crosses the companion’s circumstellar disc (~tp ± 16 d). A high VHE gamma-ray flux is also observed at the times of the HE gamma-ray flares (~tp + 30 d) and at phases before the first disc crossing (~tp − 35 d). The spectral energy range now extends to below 200 GeV and up to ~45 TeV., [Conclusions] PSR B1259–63/LS 2883 displays periodic flux variability at VHE gamma-rays without clear signatures of super-orbital modulation in the time span covered by the monitoring of the source with the H.E.S.S. telescopes. This flux variability is most probably caused by the changing environmental conditions, particularly at times close to periastron passage at which the neutron star is thought to cross the circumstellar disc of the companion star twice. In contrast, the photon index remains unchanged within uncertainties for about 200 d around periastron. At HE gamma-rays, PSR B1259–63/LS 2883 has now been detected also before and after periastron, close to the disc crossing times. Repetitive flares with distinct variability patterns are detected in this energy range. Such outbursts are not observed at VHEs, although a relatively high emission level is measured. Abstract: We report on the first detection of very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the Crab Nebula by a Cherenkov telescope in dual-mirror Schwarzschild-Couder (SC) configuration. The result has been achieved by means of the 4 m size ASTRI-Horn telescope, operated on Mt. Etna (Italy) and developed in the context of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory preparatory phase. The dual-mirror SC design is aplanatic and characterized by a small plate scale, allowing us to implement large field of view cameras with small-size pixel sensors and a high compactness. The curved focal plane of the ASTRI camera is covered by silicon photo-multipliers (SiPMs), managed by an unconventional front-end electronics based on a customized peak-sensing detector mode. The system includes internal and external calibration systems, hardware and software for control and acquisition, and the complete data archiving and processing chain. The observations of the Crab Nebula were carried out in December 2018, during the telescope verification phase, for a total observation time (after data selection) of 24.4 h, equally divided into on- and off-axis source exposure. The camera system was still under commissioning and its functionality was not yet completely exploited. Furthermore, due to recent eruptions of the Etna Volcano, the mirror reflection efficiency was reduced. Nevertheless, the observations led to the detection of the source with a statistical significance of 5.4 sigma above an energy threshold of ~3 TeV. This result provides an important step towards the use of dual-mirror systems in Cherenkov gamma-ray astronomy. Abstract: Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are brief flashes of gamma rays, considered to be the most energetic explosive phenomena in the Universe. The emission from GRBs comprises a short (typically tens of seconds) and bright prompt emission, followed by a much longer afterglow phase. During the afterglow phase, the shocked outflow -- produced by the interaction between the ejected matter and the circumburst medium -- slows down, and a gradual decrease in brightness is observed. GRBs typically emit most of their energy via gamma-rays with energies in the kiloelectronvolt-to-megaelectronvolt range, but a few photons with energies of tens of gigaelectronvolts have been detected by space-based instruments. However, the origins of such high-energy (above one gigaelectronvolt) photons and the presence of very-high-energy (more than 100 gigaelectronvolts) emission have remained elussive. Here we report observations of very-high-energy emission in the bright GRB 180720B deep in the GRB afterglow -ten hours after the end of the prompt emission phase, when the X-ray flux had already decayed by four orders of magnitude. Two possible explanations exist for the observed radiation: inverse Compton emission and synchrotron emission of ultrarelativistic electrons. Our observations show that the energy fluxes in the X-ray and gamma-ray range and their photon indices remain comparable to each other throughout the afterglow. This discovery places distinct constraints on the GRB environment for both emission mechanisms, with the inverse Compton explanation alleviating the particle energy requirements for the emission observed at late times. 37. The Flying Laptop University Satellite Mission: Ground Infrastructure and Operations after one Year in Orbit

Abstract: The small satellite Flying Laptop, launched in July 2017, was developed and built by PhD, graduate and undergraduate students at the Institute of Space Systems (IRS) of the University of Stuttgart with assistance by industry and research institutions. The project goals include technology demonstration, earth observation and improving the education of students at the University of Stuttgart in the fields of satellite development, integration, test, and operations. The satellite is operated from the IRS by a team of students applying different professional tools, e. g. ESA’s SCOS-2000 for command and control. To execute in-orbit operations from the IRS, infrastructure was set up and taken into operation before the launch of the satellite. Furthermore, an operations team consisting of undergraduate, graduate, and PhD students was trained for in-orbit operations. Beginning with the launch from Baikonur, the team successfully operated the satellite through the first critical days in which the system was taken into operation, followed by the commissioning phase and eventually routine operations. This paper highlights the ground infrastructure set up for the operations of the Flying Laptop mission, operations preparations and execution through the different mission phases, as well as some operational experience and developments during the first year of in-orbit operations.

Abstract: AIMS: Insufficient erythropoietin (EPO) synthesis is a relevant cause of renal anaemia in patients with chronic kidney disease. Molidustat, a selective hypoxia‐inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase (HIF‐PH) inhibitor, increases endogenous EPO levels dose dependently in preclinical models. We examined the pharmacokinetics, safety, tolerability and effect on EPO levels of single oral doses of molidustat in healthy male volunteers. METHODS: This was a single‐centre, randomized, single‐blind, placebo‐controlled, group‐comparison, dose‐escalation study. Molidustat was administered at doses of 5, 12.5, 25, 37.5 or 50 mg as a polyethylene glycol‐based solution. RESULTS: In total, 45 volunteers received molidustat and 14 received placebo. Molidustat was absorbed rapidly, and the mean maximum plasma concentration and area under the concentration–time curve increased dose dependently. The mean terminal half‐life was 4.64–10.40 h. A significant increase in endogenous EPO was observed following single oral doses of molidustat of 12.5 mg and above. Geometric mean peak EPO levels were 14.8 IU l(–1) (90% confidence interval 13.0, 16.9) for volunteers who received placebo and 39.8 IU l(–1) (90% confidence interval: 29.4, 53.8) for those who received molidustat 50 mg. The time course of EPO levels resembled the normal diurnal variation in EPO. Maximum EPO levels were observed approximately 12 h postdose and returned to baseline after approximately 24–48 h. All doses of molidustat were well tolerated and there were no significant changes in vital signs or laboratory safety parameters. CONCLUSIONS: Oral administration of molidustat to healthy volunteers elicited a dose‐dependent increase in endogenous EPO. These results support the ongoing development of molidustat as a potential new treatment for patients with renal anaemia.

An einem uberregionalen Traumazentrum haben wir die Ubereinstimmung von voraussichtlicher und tatsachlicher Eintreffzeit uberpruft. Es wurde eine retrospektive Analyse aller Schockraumeinsatze von September 2010 bis zum Marz 2011 durchgefuhrt und die tatsachliche Eintreffzeit mit der voraussichtlichen Eintreffzeit verglichen. Der Erfolg des Alarmierungsalgorithmus wurde uberpruft. Es wurden 165 Einsatze in die Datenanalyse eingeschlossen. Eine exakte Ubereinstimmung der geschatzten und der tatsachlichen Eintreffzeit gab es in 14 min. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass ein standardisierter Alarmierungsalgorithmus fur das Schockraumteam (Alarm 10 min vor geschatzter Ankunft des Patienten) in der uberwiegenden Zahl der Falle zu einem akzeptablen Ergebnis fuhrt. Insbesondere sind nur 3 % der Patienten in einem kritischen Zeitfenster zu fruh im Schockraum eingetroffen.

Abstract: Background. The purpose of the study was to explore the association between work-related factors and not returning to work in cancer patients. The identifi cation of any special issues contributes to the development of occupation-related rehabilitation programmes. This study focused on aspects that may be infl uenced by patients with the help of counselling (e.g., handling occupational stress). Material and methods. At the beginning and one year after the end of rehabilitation, we asked patients to answer occupation-related questionnaires. We used t-tests and χ 2 -tests as well as logistic regression analyses to address our research questions. Results. Of 333 patients, 21% had not returned to work one year after the end of rehabilitation. In comparison with working patients, patients who were not working reported poorer mental health and more occupational problems at the beginning of rehabilitation. Unemployment at the beginning of rehabilitation, an elevated risk of early retirement and limited self-assessed work ability increased the probability of not returning to work. Conclusion. Patients who did not return to work represent a subgroup within rehabilitation. These patients need special support and should receive counselling beyond the time of rehabilitation. This is particularly true for unemployed patients who need intensive help to return to the workforce. Furthermore, patients ’ estimations of their work ability and their plans for returning to work play a crucial role and should be discussed during rehabilitation.

Abstract: Ziel der Untersuchung ist die Evaluation eines interdisziplinaren berufsbezogenen Rehabilitationskonzepts zur Vorbereitung von Krebspatienten auf die Ruckkehr zur Arbeit. Da die berufliche Ruckkehr ein wichtiger Aspekt ist, um nach der Erkrankung zur Normalitat zuruckzukehren, besteht hoher Bedarf an Unterstutzung und gut fundierten Programmen. Die quasi-experimentelle Untersuchung wurde mit einer Interventions- (IG) und Vergleichsgruppe (VG) durchgefuhrt. 6 und 12 Monate nach Rehabilitationsende wurden leistungsbezogene Aspekte (zum Beispiel Ruckkehr zur Arbeit, subjektive Leistungsfahigkeit), der Bedarf an weiterer beruflicher Beratung und die patientenseitige Beurteilung der Angebote erhoben. Ein Jahr nach Rehabilitationsende lagen vollstandige Daten von 309 erwerbstatigen Patienten vor (65%). Die Analysen erfolgten nonparametrisch, mittels t-Tests, Varianzanalysen sowie anhand von logistischen Regressionen. Insgesamt befanden sich von den 309 Patienten 58% in einer Anschlussheilbehandlung (AHB) und 42% in einem allgemeinen Heilverfahren (AHV). Die Interventionspatienten sind signifikant zufriedener mit den berufsbezogenen Angeboten und benotigen nach Rehaende etwas weniger externe Beratung (n. s.). Von den AHB-Patienten (Beginn Reha n=269, 12 Monate nach Rehaende n=174) weist die IG 12 Monate nach Rehaende eine etwas hohere Ruckkehrrate auf (81% IG, 76% VG, n. s.). Weiterhin schatzt sich die IG dieser Patientengruppe mit 46% signifikant haufiger als voll leistungsfahig nach Rehaende ein (29% VG, p=0,030). Im Allgemeinen liegen die Ruckkehrraten mit durchschnittlich 78% sehr hoch. Dies zeigt den grosen Erfolg der onkologischen Rehabilitation, die Patienten auf die Ruckkehr zur Arbeit vorzubereiten. Der Einsatz eines berufsbezogenen Konzepts fordert dabei zusatzlich vor allem subjektive Parameter wie die Zufriedenheit mit der Rehabilitation und das Kompetenzerleben hinsichtlich der beruflichen subjektiven Leistungsfahigkeit.

Abstract: Objective Returning to work often plays an important role for cancer survivors. Occupational stress may hamper a successful return to work, so cancer survivors should be given the opportunity to address occupational stress issues before returning to work. We investigated the amount of occupational stress among cancer patients and whether it is associated with their well-being, their subjective need for occupational rehabilitation and elevations in their risk of early retirement. Methods At the beginning of rehabilitation, we asked cancer patients to respond to occupation-related and health-related questionnaires. We used t-tests, chi-square tests, and logistic regression analyses to address our research questions. Results A total of 477 patients participated in the study. Of these, 19% were occupationally stressed, and 26% reported subjective need for occupational rehabilitation. Patients who reported work-related stress had a diminished quality of life, were more likely to report subjective need for occupational rehabilitation (OR = 2.16), and had a higher risk of early retirement (OR = 5.44). Furthermore, cancer patients reported deficits in both active coping abilities and mental stability at work. Conclusions Because occupational stress is associated with a higher risk of early retirement, both patients and physicians should take work-related problems seriously. Screening patients for occupational stress may help physicians identify patients who are at risk of experiencing problematic work re-entries. Furthermore, the results of the study suggest that cancer patients might have problems maintaining confidence in their abilities to solve work-related problems. Therefore, facilitating the development of a perception of self-efficacy might be an important treatment goal. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract: Due to improved prognosis most cancer survivors are nowadays able to return to work. This review explored gender-related differences in work-related outcomes after cancer. A systematic search of studies on work-related issues in cancer survivors published between January 2001 and July 2011 was conducted. 44 original publications met the inclusion criteria (adult cancer survivors, focus on work-related outcomes, gender-specific report of results). The results of these studies indicate that impaired work ability is more common among female cancer survivors than among male cancer survivors as well as the reduction of working hours and income losses. Supportive work environments seem to be particularly helpful for the successful and long-lasting re-integration of female survivors. More systematic research and separate analyses for women and men are needed to fully comprehend gender differences in work-related outcomes. Broader knowledge can then be helpful in creating gender-specific return-to-work interventions.

Abstract: Die Ruckkehr zur Arbeit spielt fur onkologische Patientinnen und Patienten im erwerbsfahigen Alter haufig eine wichtige Rolle. Dementsprechend ist die Wiederaufnahme der beruflichen Tatigkeit fur diese Betroffenen zentrales Thema in der Rehabilitation. Bisher liegen aus Deutschland kaum empirische Ergebnisse vor, welche Erwartungen Rehabilitationspatientinnen und -patienten bezuglich der Wiederaufnahme der Berufstatigkeit haben. Negative Erwartungen konnen zu Belastungen fuhren und die Ruckkehr erschweren. Im Rahmen der medizinischen Rehabilitation bietet sich die Moglichkeit, potenzielle Probleme anhand von berufsbezogenen Angeboten zu bearbeiten. Ziel der Studie ist es, zu untersuchen, welche Erwartungen an die Ruckkehr bestehen und wie hilfreich die beruflich orientierten Angebote diesbezuglich wahrend der Rehabilitation eingeschatzt werden. Weiterhin stellt sich die Frage, ob eine berufliche Beratung in den Augen der Betroffenen bereits vor einer Rehabilitationsmasnahme erfolgen sollte und wie solche Angebote erlebt werden. 32 Krebspatientinnen und -patienten, die eine stationare Rehabilitationsmasnahme in Anspruch nahmen, wurden innerhalb einer Klinik rekrutiert. Es wurden halbstrukturierte qualitative Interviews durchgefuhrt, die mit der Methode der qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse nach Mayring ausgewertet wurden. Die Mehrheit der Befragten hat nach Erhalt der Diagnose positive Erfahrungen mit dem Arbeitsumfeld gemacht und ist optimistisch, weitere Hilfestellungen am Arbeitsplatz zu erhalten. Bereits vor der Rehabilitationsmasnahme haben 47% der Befragten von Haus- oder Facharzten Beratung zum Thema Krebs und Ruckkehr zur Arbeit erhalten. Hinsichtlich der berufsorientierten Angebote im Rahmen der Rehabilitation ergeben sich Hinweise auf unterschiedliche Bedurfnisse von Mannern und Frauen. Letztere bewerten die Angebote insgesamt als hilfreicher. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Krebspatienten nach Erhalt der Diagnose mit dem beruflichen Umfeld kaum negative Erfahrungen machen. Dies fuhrt zu nur wenigen Sorgen bezuglich der Ruckkehr zur Arbeit. Die unterschiedlichen Bewertungen der rehabilitativen Hilfsangebote konnen als Hinweis darauf gewertet werden, dass die beruflich orientierten Konzepte der medizinischen Rehabilitation durch Berucksichtigung der verschiedenen Bedurfnisse mannlicher und weiblicher Patienten optimiert werden konnten.

Abstract: The paper presents the results of isothermal and transient oxidation experiments of the advanced cladding alloys M5® and ZIRLO™ in comparison to Zircaloy-4 in air at temperatures from 973 to 1853 K. Generally, oxidation in air leads to a strong degradation of the cladding material. The main mechanism of this process is the formation of zirconium nitride and its re-oxidation. From the point of view of safety, the barrier effect of the fuel cladding is lost much earlier than during accident transients with a steam atmosphere only. Comparison of the three alloys investigated reveals a qualitatively similar, but quantitatively varying oxidation behavior in air. The mainly parabolic oxidation kinetics, where applicable, is comparable for the three alloys. Strong differences of up to 500% in oxidation rates were observed after transition to linear kinetics at temperatures below 1300 K. The paper presents kinetic rate constants as well as critical times and oxide scale thicknesses at the point of transition from parabolic to linear kinetics.

Abstract: Detailed knowledge of the material properties and internal structures of frozen ground is one of the prerequisites in many permafrost studies. In the absence of direct evidence, such as in-situ borehole measurements, geophysical methods are an increasingly interesting option for obtaining subsurface information on various spatial and temporal scales. The indirect nature of geophysical soundings requires a relation between the measured variables (e.g. electrical resistivity, seismic velocity) and the actual subsurface constituents (rock, water, air, ice). In this work, we present a model which provides estimates of the volumetric fractions of these four constituents from tomographic electrical and seismic images. The model is tested using geophysical data sets from two rock glaciers in the Swiss Alps, where ground truth information in form of borehole data is available. First results confirm the applicability of the so-called 4-phase model, which allows to quantify the contributions of ice-, water- and air within permafrost areas as well as detecting solid bedrock. Apart from a similarly thick active layer with enhanced air content for both rock glaciers, the two case studies revealed a heterogeneous distribution of ice and unfrozen water within Muragl rock glacier, where bedrock was detected at depths of 20–25 m, but a comparatively homogeneous ice body with only minor heterogeneities within Murtèl rock glacier., The Cryosphere, 5 (2), ISSN:1994-0416, ISSN:1994-0424
