Abstract Pigs infected by porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) are affected by severe diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration. The severity of clinical signs depends on the virus strain. Two genetically different PEDV strains are known to infect pigs, the PEDV S-InDel strains which circulate on all continents and the highly virulent PEDV S-non-InDel strains found in Asia and in America. We have previously demonstrated the presence of PEDV RNA in semen from boars experimentally infected with an S-non-InDel PEDV strain. If naturally infected boars may shed PEDV in semen, this would have important consequences for the breeding sector. Thus we sought to determine whether PEDV has been circulating in populations of breeding boars from French artificial insemination (AI) centers. The current study reports on a serological survey conducted on one hundred and twenty boars from six AI centers, representing 18.6% of the total population of breeding boars in French AI centers in 2015. All of them were found negative for PEDV antibodies, showing no evidence of PEDV circulation in French AI centers at that time.

Abstract Background The genomic region that lies between the telomere and chromosome body, termed the subtelomere, is heterochromatic, repeat-rich, and frequently undergoes rearrangement. Within this region, large-scale structural changes enable gene diversification, and, as such, large multicopy gene families are often found at the subtelomere. In some parasites, genes associated with proliferation, invasion, and survival are often found in these regions, where they benefit from the subtelomere's highly plastic, rapidly changing nature. The increasing availability of complete (or near complete) parasite genomes provides an opportunity to investigate these typically poorly defined and overlooked genomic regions and potentially reveal relevant gene families necessary for the parasite’s lifestyle. Results Using the latest chromosome-scale genome assembly and hallmark repeat richness observed at chromosome termini, we have identified and characterised the subtelomeres of Schistosoma mansoni, a metazoan parasitic flatworm that infects over 250 million people worldwide. Approximately 12% of the S. mansoni genome is classified as subtelomeric, and, in line with other organisms, we find these regions to be gene-poor but rich in transposable elements. We find that S. mansoni subtelomeres have undergone extensive interchromosomal recombination and that these sites disproportionately contribute to the 2.3% of the genome derived from segmental duplications. This recombination has led to the expansion of subtelomeric gene clusters containing 103 genes, including the immunomodulatory annexins and other gene families with unknown roles. The largest of these is a 49-copy plexin domain-containing protein cluster, exclusively expressed in the tegument—the tissue located at the host-parasite physical interface—of intramolluscan life stages. Conclusions We propose that subtelomeric regions act as a genomic playground for trial-and-error of gene duplication and subsequent divergence. Owing to the importance of subtelomeric genes in other parasites, gene families implicated in this subtelomeric expansion within S. mansoni warrant further characterisation for a potential role in parasitism.

The equilibrium properties of nanoscale systems can deviate significantly from standard thermodynamics due to their coupling to an environment. We investigate this here for the θ -angled spin–boson model, where we first derive a compact and general form of the classical equilibrium state including environmental corrections to all orders. Secondly, for the quantum spin–boson model we prove, by carefully taking a large spin limit, that Bohr’s quantum–classical correspondence persists at all coupling strengths. This shows, for the first time, the validity of the quantum–classical correspondence for an open system and gives insight into the regimes where the quantum system is well-approximated by a classical one. Finally, we provide the first classification of the coupling parameter regimes for the spin–boson model, from weak to ultrastrong, both for the quantum case and the classical setting. Our results shed light on the interplay of quantum and mean force corrections in equilibrium states of the spin–boson model, and will help draw the quantum to classical boundary in a range of fields, such as magnetism and exciton dynamics.

Introduction: The healthcare system in the United States relies heavily on physician-and house officer-driven initiation of billing and coding for collection of hospital payments and professional fees. Under the umbrella of practice management is the ever-changing and suboptimally taught concept of procedural billing and coding to house officers and faculty. Clinical providers and practitioners initiate billing and coding for performed services based on the procedural visit encounter, supported by the appropriate documentation. Correct charge capture is dependent on accurately linking CPT codes and J codes, including waste documentation, modifiers, and charge collection. We discuss a perspective regarding a new curricular methodology that teaches learners to apply an algorithmic approach for coding CPT codes, J codes, and modifiers for chemical denervation procedures involving high-cost botulinum toxin. We further recommend the use of visuals with algorithm development for other pertinent procedures that are specific to a department., Methods: We developed a curriculum that includes algorithmic visuals, pre-and post-test questions, and reflections. It was implemented across various learner types., Results: This chemical denervation curriculum was well-received and impactful in meeting the objectives of the course. It further expanded a learner's vision of practice management that can be applied to other procedural examples., Discussion: The results demonstrate a clear gap in practice management education, with pre-education knowledge on applying appropriate codes being particularly low among resident physicians. Learners found the algorithm we developed especially valuable, as it serves as a practical tool for accurately accounting for all aspects of CPT codes, modifiers, and J-codes. The methodology of the algorithmic approach proved to be innovative for avoiding billing write-offs and loopbacks that were beneficial for the training process. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that infants be breastfed exclusively for the first 6 months of age. However, there are few resources available on the effects a spinal cord injury (SCI) can have for breastfeeding mothers. It is difficult to find information to address the unique challenges women with SCI experience when planning or trying to breastfeed. Our international team, including women with SCI, health care providers, and SCI researchers, aims to address the information gap through the creation of this consumer guide. The purpose of this consumer guide is to share the most common issues women with SCI experience during breastfeeding and provide information, practical suggestions, recommendations, and key resources in lay language. General information about breastfeeding is available on the internet, in books, or from friends and health care providers. We do not intend to repeat nor replace general breastfeeding information or medical advice. Breastfeeding for mothers with SCI is complex and requires a team of health care providers with complementary expertise. Such a team may include family physician, obstetrician, physiatrist, neurologist, occupational and physical therapist, lactation consultant, midwife, and psychologist. We hope this consumer guide can serve as a quick reference guide for mothers with SCI planning of trying to breastfeed. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that children be breastfed exclusively for the first 6 months of age. This recommendation may prove challenging for women with spinal cord injury (SCI) who face unique challenges and barriers to breastfeeding due to the impact of SCI on mobility and physiology. Tailored provision of care from health care professionals (HCPs) is important in helping women navigate these potential barriers. Yet, HCPs often lack the confidence and SCI-specific knowledge to meet the needs of mothers with SCI. An international panel of clinicians, researchers, consultants, and women with lived experience was formed to create an accessible resource that can address this gap. A comprehensive survey on breastfeeding complications, challenges, resources, and quality of life of mothers with SCI was conducted, along with an environmental scan to evaluate existing postpartum guidelines and assess their relevance and usability as recommendations for breastfeeding after SCI. Objective: Fragility fractures are associated with an increased risk of pneumonia, which is a leading cause of death in adults with intellectual disabilities; however, the timing and complications of post-fracture pneumonia are underinvestigated. The objectives of this study were to determine the 30-day pneumonia rate post-fracture and the association of post-fracture pneumonia with mortality and cardiovascular events among adults with intellectual disabilities., Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted using Medicare and commercial claims from 01 January 2011 to 31 December 2016. Incidence of pneumonia 30 days after a fragility fracture among adults ≥18 years old with intellectual disabilities (Fx cohort) was compared to the incidence among matched adults with intellectual disabilities without fractures (w/oFx cohort) and the general population of patients with an incident fragility fracture (GP+Fx). For the Fx cohort, Cox regression was used to examine the adjusted association of time-varying pneumonia (within 30 days post-fracture) with mortality and incidence of cardiovascular events 0-30, 31-365, and 366-730 days post-fracture., Results: There was a high-early rate of pneumonia within 30 days post-fracture for young, middle-aged, and elderly adults with intellectual disabilities ( n = 6,183); this rate was 2.2- to 6.1-fold higher than the rate among the w/oFx ( n = 12,366) and GP+Fx ( n = 363,995) cohorts (all P < 0.05). For the Fx cohort, post-fracture 30-day incidence of pneumonia was associated with an increased 30-day rate of mortality (adjusted HR [aHR] = 5.19; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 3.68-7.32), heart failure (aHR = 2.96; 95% CI = 1.92-4.56), and cerebrovascular disease (aHF = 1.48; 95% CI = 0.93-2.35; P = 0.098), with sustained effects to 1 year for heart failure (aHR = 1.61; 95% CI = 1.19-2.17) and 2 years for mortality (aHR = 1.39; 95% CI = 1.06-1.83), and without evidence of effect modification by age., Discussion: Adults with intellectual disabilities are vulnerable to post-fracture pneumonia within 30 days, and complications arising from this, across the adult lifespan, and not only during the elderly years., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2023 Whitney, Erickson and Berri.)

Background: For adults with cerebral palsy (CP), fragility fractures may be a risk factor for pneumonia, a leading cause of death for this population; yet, the timing and complications are unknown. The objectives were to determine the 30-day pneumonia rate post-fracture and its association with mortality and incident cardiovascular events among adults with CP., Methods: This retrospective cohort study used nationwide administrative claims data from 01/01/2012-12/31/2017 from a random 20% sample of the Medicare fee-for-service and Optum Clinformatics® Data Mart. Cohorts included ≥18 years of age with CP with an incident fragility fracture (CP + Fx) and comparison cohorts: CP without fractures (CPw/oFx) and without CP with an incident fragility fracture (w/oCP + Fx). Incidence rate (IR) of pneumonia 30-days post-fracture and IR ratios were estimated by age group: 18-40, 41-64, and ≥ 65 years. For CP + Fx, Cox regression examined the association between time-varying pneumonia (within 30-days post-fracture) with mortality and incidence of cardiovascular events 0-30-days and 31-365-days post-fracture., Results: There were 3688 CP + Fx (mean [SD] age, 58.2 [14.9]; 56.4% women), 29,429 CPw/oFx (50.3 [15.8]; 45.9% women), and 363,995 w/oCP + Fx (65.9 [18.3]; 65.5% women). The IR of 30-day pneumonia for CP + Fx was similar across age groups (IR per 100 person-months, 8.4-11.0) and 1.77-16.18-fold higher (all P < 0.05) than comparison cohorts. Peri/post-fracture pneumonia was associated with an increased rate of mortality (30-day-adjusted HR [aHR] = 5.89, 95%CI = 3.54-9.81; 31-365-day aHR = 2.89, 95%CI = 2.13-3.92), congestive heart failure 0-30-days (aHR = 3.64, 95%CI = 2.01-6.57) and 31-365-days (time-dependent), myocardial infarction 31-365-days (aHR = 2.03, 95%CI = 1.11-3.71), and cerebrovascular disease 0-30-days (time-dependent), without evidence of effect modification by age, sex, or fracture site., Conclusions: Adults with CP are particularly vulnerable to 30-day risk of post-fracture pneumonia and its complications across the adult lifespan and not just in the elderly years., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. Objective: To compare the prevalence and incidence of, and adjusted hazards for comorbidities among adults with traumatic spinal cord injuries (TSCIs) across insurance types (private vs governmental insurance) in the United States., Patients and Methods: Privately insured (N=9081) and Medicare (N=7645) beneficiaries with a diagnosis of TSCI were included. Prevalence and incidence estimates of common psychological, cardiometabolic, and musculoskeletal morbidities were compared at baseline and at 4-years after index diagnosis, respectively. Survival models were used to quantify hazard ratios (HRs) for outcomes, controlling for insurance type, sociodemographic characteristics, and other comorbidities. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to determine the effects of insurance and race/ethnicity., Results: Adults with TSCIs on Medicare had a higher prevalence of any psychological (54.7% vs 35.4%), cardiometabolic (74.7% vs 70.1%), and musculoskeletal (72.8% vs 66.3%) morbidity than privately insured adults with TSCIs. Similarly, the 4-year incidences of most psychological (eg, depression: 37.6% [Medicare] vs 24.2% [private]), cardiometabolic (eg, type 2 diabetes: 22.5% [Medicare] vs 12.9% [private], and musculoskeletal (eg, osteoarthritis: 42.1% [Medicare] vs 34.6% [private]) morbidities were considerably higher among adults with TSCIs on Medicare. Adjusted survival models found that adults with TSCIs on Medicare had a greater hazard for developing psychological (HR, 1.40; 95% CI, 1.31-1.50) and cardiometabolic (HR, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.10-1.33) morbidities compared with privately insured adults with TSCI. Background: The buttock is an essential feature of the female silhouette. This has led to the rise of the Brazilian butt lift as one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in recent years. Despite this popularity, there remains no prevailing standard for the ideal buttock size and shape. In fact, a wide range of preferred sizes and shapes among the authors' patients has been observed. The authors hypothesized that age, religious affinity, and ethnic differences may demonstrate different buttock size and shape preferences., Methods: The authors designed the buttock assessment tool, which utilizes digitally altered buttock sizes and shapes to determine desired buttock shape (upper, middle, and lower pole maximum fullness) and buttock size (waist-to-hip width ratio) for both the posteroanterior and lateral views. A survey of 422 patients was completed, evaluating variation of desired buttock size and shape based on patient age, cultural, and ethnic differences., Results: There were significant differences in buttock size and buttock shape based on age, ethnicity, and religion. Hispanics and African Americans were twice as likely as Caucasians to request lower pole fullness in the posteroanterior view. Older respondents preferred a smaller buttock in both views. African Americans preferred a larger buttock compared to Caucasians in both views. Hispanics preferred a larger buttock in only the lateral view. Background Context: Individuals living with a spinal cord injury (SCI) are at heightened risk for a number of chronic health conditions such as secondary comorbidities that may develop or be influenced by the injury, the presence of impairment, and/or the process of aging., Purpose: The objective of this study was to compare the incidence of and adjusted hazards for cardiovascular and metabolic (cardiometabolic) morbidities among adults following SCI compared to adults without SCIs., Study Design/setting: Longitudinal cohort from a nationwide insurance claims database., Patient Sample: Privately-insured beneficiaries were included if they had an ICD-9-CM diagnostic code for traumatic SCI (n=9,081). Adults without SCI were also included (n=1,474,232)., Outcome Measures and Methods: Incidence estimates of common cardiometabolic morbidities were compared at 4-years of enrollment. Survival models were used to quantify unadjusted and adjusted hazard ratios for incident cardiometabolic morbidities., Results: Adults living with traumatic SCIs had a higher 5-year incidence of any cardiometabolic morbidities (56.2% vs. 36.4%) as compared to adults without SCI, and differences were to a clinically meaningful extent. We present an in-line metrology solution for dimensional characterization of roll-to-roll imprinted nanostructures. The solution is based on a scatterometric analysis of optical data from a hyperspectral camera deployed at a production facility, where nanostructures are produced at speeds of 10m/min. The system combines the ease of use of a real-space imaging system with the spectral information used in scatterometry. We present nanoscale dimensional measurements on one-dimensional line gratings with various periods and orientations. The depths of the produced structures are accurately characterized with uncertainties on the scale of a few nanometers. The hyperspectral imaging capabilities of the system can also be used to avoid vibrational effects.

Background: People living with spinal cord injuries (SCIs) experience motor, sensory and autonomic impairments that cause musculoskeletal disorders following the injury and that progress throughout lifetime. The range and severity of issues are largely dependent on level and completeness of the injury and preserved function., Objective: High risk of developing musculoskeletal morbidities among individuals after sustaining a traumatic SCI is well known in the clinical setting, however, there is a severe lack of evidence in literature. The objective of this study was to compare the incidence of and adjusted hazards for musculoskeletal morbidities among adults with and without SCIs., Methods: Privately-insured beneficiaries were included if they had an ICD-9-CM diagnostic code for SCI (n = 9081). Adults without SCI were also included (n = 1,474,232). Incidence estimates of common musculoskeletal morbidities (e.g., osteoporosis, sarcopenia, osteoarthritis, fractures, etc.) were compared at 5-years of enrollment. Survival models were used to quantify unadjusted and adjusted hazard ratios for incident musculoskeletal morbidities., Results: Adults living with traumatic SCIs had a higher incidence of any musculoskeletal morbidities (82.4% vs. 47.5%) as compared to adults without SCI, and differences were to a clinically meaningful extent. Survival models demonstrated that adults with SCI had a greater fully-adjusted hazard for any musculoskeletal morbidity (Hazard Ratio [HR]: 2.41; 95%CI: 2.30, 2.52), and all musculoskeletal disorders, and ranged from HR: 1.26 (1.14, 1.39) for rheumatoid arthritis to HR: 7.02 (6.58, 7.49) for pathologic fracture., Conclusions: Adults with SCIs have a significantly higher incidence of and risk for common musculoskeletal morbidities, as compared to adults without SCIs. Background: Bacterial colonization in cystic fibrosis (CF) lungs has been directly associated to the loss of CFTR function, and/or secondarily linked to repetitive cycles of chronic inflammation/infection. We hypothesized that altered molecular properties of mucins could contribute to this process., Methods: Newborn CFTR +/+ and CFTR -/- were sacrificed before and 6 h after inoculation with luminescent Pseudomonas aeruginosa into the tracheal carina. Tracheal mucosa and the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid were collected to determine the level of mucin O-glycosylation, bacteria binding to mucins and the airways transcriptome. Disturbances in mucociliary transport were determined by ex-vivo imaging of luminescent Pseudomonas aeruginosa., Results: We provide evidence of an increased sialylation of CF airway mucins and impaired mucociliary transport that occur before the onset of inflammation. Hypersialylation of mucins was reproduced on tracheal explants from non CF animals treated with GlyH101, an inhibitor of CFTR channel activity, indicating a causal relationship between the absence of CFTR expression and the sialylation of mucins. This increased sialylation was correlated to an increased adherence of P. aeruginosa to mucins. In vivo infection of newborn CF piglets by live luminescent P. aeruginosa demonstrated an impairment of mucociliary transport of this bacterium, with no evidence of pre-existing inflammation., Conclusions: Our results document for the first time in a well-defined CF animal model modifications that affect the O-glycan chains of mucins. Background: Patients are routinely consulted regarding dislike of their upper and middle back contour and associated back rolls that stick out of their bras. Although patients only associate this fullness with excess fat, on examination it becomes evident that back rolls are due to a combination of excess fat as well as skin redundancy. To date, treatment of both excess skin and fat in back rolls has required consideration of excisional surgery such as an upper body lift., Objectives: We present 14 consecutive back contouring cases that were treated with an alternative protocol involving simultaneous ultrasound assisted liposuction and helium activated radiofrequency., Methods: Patients underwent ultrasound assisted liposuction to remove superficial fat over the upper and middle back as well as helium activated radiofrequency to tighten the skin using subdermal coagulation., Results: All 14 patients visually demonstrated elimination of back rolls and improvement in upper and middle back contour. All 14 patients also reported overall satisfaction in their postoperative follow-ups at 3, 6, and 12-months., Conclusion: In summary, simultaneous ultrasound assisted liposuction and helium activated radiofrequency provide an effective treatment for patients desiring improvements in upper and middle back contour and elimination of back rolls while avoiding more invasive excisional surgeries., (© 2020 The Aesthetic Society.)

Background: The hallmark of the cystic fibrosis (CF) lung disease is a neutrophil dominated lung environment that is associated to chronic lung tissue destruction and ultimately the patient's death. It is unclear whether the exacerbated neutrophil response is primary related to a defective CFTR or rather secondary to chronic bacterial colonization and inflammation. Here, we hypothesized that CF peripheral blood neutrophils present intrinsic alteration at birth before the start of an inflammatory process., Methods: Peripheral blood neutrophils were isolated from newborn CFTR +/+ and CFTR -/- piglets. Neutrophils immunophenotype was evaluated by flow cytometry. Lipidomic and proteomic profile were characterized by liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), intact cell matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (ICM-MS) followed by top-down high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), respectively. The ability of CF neutrophils to kill pseudomonas aeruginosa was also evaluated., Results: Polyunsaturated fatty acid metabolites analysis did not show any difference between CFTR +/+ and CFTR -/- neutrophils. On the other hand, a predictive mathematical model based on the ICM-MS proteomic profile was able to discriminate between both genotypes. Top-down proteomic analysis identified 19 m/z differentially abundant masses that corresponded mainly to proteins related to the antimicrobial response and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Background: The lack of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) function causes cystic fibrosis (CF), predisposing to severe lung disease, reduced growth and osteopenia. Both reduced bone content and strength are increasingly recognized in infants with CF before the onset of significant lung disease, suggesting a developmental origin and a possible role in bone disease pathogenesis. The role of CFTR in bone metabolism is unclear and studies on humans are not feasible. Deletion of CFTR in pigs (CFTR -/- pigs) displays at birth severe malformations similar to humans in the intestine, respiratory tract, pancreas, liver, and male reproductive tract., Methods: We compared bone parameters of CFTR -/- male and female pigs with those of their wild-type (WT) littermates at birth. Morphological and microstructural properties of femoral cortical and trabecular bone were evaluated using micro-computed tomography (μCT), and their chemical compositions were examined using Raman microspectroscopy., Results: The integrity of the CFTR -/- bone was altered due to changes in its microstructure and chemical composition in both sexes. Low cortical thickness and high cortical porosity were found in CFTR -/- pigs compared to sex-matched WT littermates. Moreover, an increased chemical composition heterogeneity associated with higher carbonate/phosphate ratio and higher mineral crystallinity was found in CFTR -/- trabecular bone, but not in CFTR -/- cortical bone., Conclusions: The loss of CFTR directly alters the bone composition and metabolism of newborn pigs. Salmonella is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria in the Enterobacteriaceae family causing various illnesses. The ability of the different serovars of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica to infect a host and to induce pathology relies in part on their cellular and molecular interactions with the intestinal epithelium. In the current study, an in vitro approach using non-polarized or polarized IPEC-1 porcine intestinal epithelial cells were used in order to assess the relation between adhesion, invasion, and induction of the immune response as a function of the serotype of Salmonella. Five serovars, Choleraesuis (host-adapted), Typhimurium (ubiquitous), Typhisuis (host-restricted), which are relevant for pig infection, and Dublin and Gallinarum, which are host-restricted or host-adapted, were studied. A strong variation was observed in the percentages of adhesion and invasion amongst the S. enterica serovars used to interact with the non-polarized and polarized cells. Subsequently, differences were identified between serovars in terms of immune response induced. Serovars Typhimurium and Typhisuis induced a strong innate immune response four and half hours after the beginning of cell stimulation while Choleraesuis, Gallinarum, and Dublin did not. A strong inflammatory response could limit the spread of the porcine serovars to the gut while, with a weak response, bacteria may not be constrained by the immune response enabling severe systemic diseases. Background: In pig production systems, weaning is a crucial period characterized by nutritional, environmental, and social stresses. Piglets transition from a milk-based diet to a solid, more complex plant-based diet, and their gut physiology must adapt accordingly. It is well established that piglets weaned later display improved health, better wean-to-finish growth performance, and lower mortality rates. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of weaning age on fecal microbiota diversity and composition in piglets. Forty-eight Large White piglets were divided into 4 groups of 12 animals that were weaned at different ages: 14 days (early weaning), 21 days (a common weaning age in intensive pig farming), 28 days (idem), and 42 days (late weaning). Microbiota composition was assessed in each group by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene using fecal samples taken on the day of weaning, 7 days later, and at 60 days of age., Results: In each group, there were significant differences in fecal microbiota composition before and after weaning (p < 0.05), confirming that weaning can drastically change the gut microbiota. Microbiota diversity was positively correlated with weaning age: microbial alpha diversity and richness were higher in piglets weaned at 42 days of age both on the day of weaning and 7 days later. The abundance of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii operational taxonomic units (OTUs) was also higher in piglets weaned at 42 days of age., Conclusions: Overall, these results show that late weaning increased gut microbiota diversity and the abundance of F. prausnitzii, a microorganism with positive effects in humans. Piglets might thus derive a competitive advantage from later weaning because they have more time to accumulate a higher diversity of potentially beneficial microbes prior to the stressful and risky weaning period.

Male patients are routinely consulted regarding dislike of their chest appearance. To date, majority of patients have desired elimination of their feminine-appearing breast, termed gynecomastia. These patients have associated their overweight body image, with the femininity of their breasts as presented by fullness and roundedness of their breasts and subsequently have desired maximal flattening of their breast. We present a new set of patients who desire a more muscular-appearing chest than a gynecomastia repair that is interposed on a chiseled abdominal contour. In contrast to the former set of patients, these patients desire bulking of their breasts with a bolder-appearing armor plate look. We present an alternative to traditional gynecomastia repair which involves a novel approach to chest contouring creating a flat, yet bold, pentagonal-shaped breast with linear borders utilizing both fat and gland removal as well as strategic fat grafting back into the chest. We present a novel protocol to create an armor plate male chest appearance as an alternative to traditional gynecomastia contouring. The epidemiology and prevalence of Q fever in India is largely unknown. There are very few serologic and molecular reports of Q fever in India and these are old reports. The objective of this study was to investigate, for the first time, the presence of Coxiella burnetii infection in sheep and goat flocks of Jammu province of Jammu and Kashmir, India. A total of 148 milk (110 sheep and 38 goats) samples, 282 sera (170 sheep and 112 goats), and 152 vaginal swabs (123 sheep and 29 goats) were collected from farms with incidences of repeated abortion. The LSI Q fever ruminant serum/milk ELISA kit was used to identify anti-C. burnetii antibodies and nested PCR was employed to detect DNA in vaginal swabs. Overall, 42 (38.2%; 95% CI: 29.2-47.9) sheep and 9 (23.7%; 95% CI: 12.0-40.6) goat milk samples, and 21 (12.4%; 95% CI: 8.0-18.5) sheep and 11 (9.8%; 95% CI: 5.2-17.3) goat sera were ELISA positive. In addition, nine (7.3%; 95% CI: 3.6-13.8) vaginal swabs from sheep tested positive by nested PCR; however, C. burnetii could not be found in any of the vaginal swabs from goat. The transfer of passive immunity from sows to piglets can be improved through the administration of immuno-stimulating products before farrowing. This study evaluated the immuno-stimulating effect of an algal sulfated polysaccharide extract (MSP extract) from the green algae Ulva armoricana when administrated orally to sows at the end of gestation. Four diets were tested: Control (no MSP extract), MSP1 (2 g/day of MSP extract), MSP2 (8 g/day), and MSP3 (16 g/day). The experimental diets were provided in two periods: before the last atrophic rhinitis vaccine booster, and a week before farrowing. Anti- Bordetella IgG antibodies were recorded in blood, colostrum, and milk, and total IgA were measured in colostrum and milk. Titer kinetics between the blood sampled before farrowing and colostrum displayed an increase in specific IgG for MSP3. Moreover, the MSP2 diet increased the level of total IgA in milk compared to the control group. Although the immuno-stimulating effect of MSP extract on piglet performance was not concurrent across the different supplementation levels, the present study supports the use of natural algae extract (MSP) as an immunomodulating solution in swine production., (© 2019 Amadéite SAS, Bréhan, France.)

PEDV is mainly transmitted by the oro-fecal route although PEDV shedding in semen has already been shown for an S-non-InDel PEDV strain infection. The aim of this study was to determine if PEDV can be shed in semen from SPF (specific pathogens free) boars infected by a French S-InDel PEDV strain (PEDV/FR/001/2014) and in case of positive semen to determine the infectivity of that semen. Both infected boars had diarrhea after inoculation and shed virus in feces. PEDV genome was also detected by RT-qPCR in the sperm-rich fraction of semen (6.94 × 10 3 and 4.73 × 10 3 genomic copies/mL) from the two boars infected with the S-InDel PEDV strain but only once at 7DPI. In addition, PEDV RNA in Peyer's patches and in mesenteric lymph nodes was also present for the two inoculated boars. The PEDV positive semen (S-non-InDel and S-InDel) sampled during a previous trial and in this boar trial were inoculated to six SPF weaned pigs. The inoculated piglets did not seroconvert and did not shed virus throughout the duration of the study except for one pig at 18 DPI. But, PEDV could be detected in intestinal tissues such as duodenum, jejunum and jejunum Peyer's patches by RT-qPCR except for one pig. From the severe porcine epidemic diarrhoea (PED) epidemics that struck in 2013 in the United States of America and other countries of North and South America, two types of porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus (PEDV) were isolated, namely the InDel and the non-InDel strains. They are differentiated by insertions/deletions in the S1 nucleotide sequence of the S gene, and differences in virulence were observed from the clinical cases. In 2014, a PED outbreak occurred in a pig farm in France, from which an InDel strain was isolated. This study aimed at comparing, under experimental conditions, the pathogenicity and the direct and indirect transmissions between a non-InDel strain isolated from a PED-affected piglet in 2014 in the USA and the French InDel strain. All infected pigs showed clinical signs with the non-InDel strain although only the inoculated and direct contact pigs showed clinical signs in the InDel strain group. Although viral RNA was detected in air samples with both strains, the indirect contact pigs remained free from infection with the InDel strain in contrast to the non-InDel group in which airborne transmission occurred in the indirect contact pigs. All infected pigs shed virus in faeces regardless of PEDV strain with 9 of 30 pigs showing intermittent faecal shedding. The transmission rate by direct contact was found to be 2.17-fold higher than the non-InDel strain compared with the InDel. In conclusion, the InDel strain was less pathogenic than the non-InDel strain in our experimental conditions. The transmission route differed between the two strains. An acute epidemic of porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) has affected the USA since 2013 and spread all around the world. In France, the immune status of the pig population against PED virus (PEDV) was expected to be low due to the absence of circulation of the virus since the 80's and a compulsory notification of PED was set up in 2014. Here, we reported the first case of a PED outbreak in December 2014 in the North of France after a long absence of the disease, the monitoring of the excretion and the control measure implementation. The isolated strain in France in December 2014 was a PEDV "S-InDel" strain which was close to the "S-InDel" German PEDV strain isolated in May 2014. The individual shedding duration of PEDV in feces was estimated around 20 days for pigs of different ages. Biosecurity measures implemented allowed the limitation of PEDV spread to fattening and farrowing rooms without dissemination to the nursery block. Using strict biosecurity measures, direct shipment of infected fatteners to the slaughterhouse, strict decontamination protocols with a quarantine of 6 weeks for replacement gilts without voluntary contamination helped PEDV fade out within the herd and avoided the spread to other herds. PEDV presence in manure was investigated as well as the inactivation treatment of the virus present in the liquid manure. The epithelium of the intestinal mucosa and the gut-associated lymphoid tissues (GALT) constitute an essential physical and immunological barrier against pathogens. In order to study the specificities of the GALT transcriptome in pigs, we compared the transcriptome profiles of jejunal and ileal Peyer's patches (PPs), mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) and peripheral blood (PB) of four male piglets by RNA-Seq. We identified 1,103 differentially expressed (DE) genes between ileal PPs (IPPs) and jejunal PPs (JPPs), and six times more DE genes between PPs and MLNs. The master regulator genes FOXP3, GATA3, STAT4, TBX21 and RORC were less expressed in IPPs compared to JPPs, whereas the transcription factor BCL6 was found more expressed in IPPs. In comparison between IPPs and JPPs, our analyses revealed predominant differential expression related to the differentiation of T cells into Th1, Th2, Th17 and iTreg in JPPs. Our results were consistent with previous reports regarding a higher T/B cells ratio in JPPs compared to IPPs. We found antisense transcription for respectively 24%, 22% and 14% of the transcripts detected in MLNs, PPs and PB, and significant positive correlations between PB and GALT transcriptomes. Allele-specific expression analyses revealed both shared and tissue-specific cis-genetic control of gene expression.

In 2013, PED emerged for the first time in the United States (US). The porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) spread quickly throughout North America. Infection with PEDV causes watery diarrhea and up to 100% mortality in piglets, particularly for highly pathogenic non-InDel strains circulating in the US. PEDV is mainly transmitted by the fecal-oral route. Transmission via the venereal route has been suspected but not previously investigated. The aim of the study was to determine if PEDV could be detected in semen from infected specific pathogen-free (SPF) boars inoculated with a PEDV US non-InDel strain suggesting venereal transmission may occur. Two boars orally inoculated with PEDV showed clinical signs and virus shedding in feces. Transient presence of the PEDV genome was detected by RT-qPCR in the seminal (5.06 × 10 2 to 2.44 × 10 3  genomic copies/mL) and sperm-rich fraction of semen (5.64 × 10 2 to 3.40 × 10 4  genomic copies/mL) and a longer duration of viral shedding was observed in the sperm-rich fraction. The evidence of PEDV shedding in semen raises new questions in term of disease spread within the pig population with the use of potentially contaminated semen.
