In this paper, we present observations of two high-resolution transit datasets obtained with ESPRESSO of the bloated sub-Saturn planet WASP-131~b. We have simultaneous photometric observations with NGTS and EulerCam. In addition, we utilised photometric lightcurves from {\tess}, WASP, EulerCam and TRAPPIST of multiple transits to fit for the planetary parameters and update the ephemeris. We spatially resolve the stellar surface of WASP-131 utilising the Reloaded Rossiter McLaughlin technique to search for centre-to-limb convective variations, stellar differential rotation, and to determine the star-planet obliquity for the first time. We find WASP-131 is misaligned on a nearly retrograde orbit with a projected obliquity of $\lambda = 162.4\substack{+1.3 \\ -1.2}^{\circ}$. In addition, we determined a stellar differential rotation shear of $\alpha = 0.61 \pm 0.06$ and disentangled the stellar inclination ($i_* = 40.9\substack{+13.3 \\ -8.5}^{\circ}$) from the projected rotational velocity, resulting in an equatorial velocity of $v_{\rm{eq}} = 7.7\substack{+1.5 \\ -1.3}$~km s$^{-1}$. In turn, we determined the true 3D obliquity of $\psi = 123.7\substack{+12.8 \\ -8.0}^{\circ}$, meaning the planet is on a perpendicular/polar orbit. Therefore, we explored possible mechanisms for the planetary system's formation and evolution. With high-resolution spectroscopy we can study exoplanet atmospheres and learn about their chemical composition, temperature profiles, and presence of clouds and winds, mainly in hot, giant planets. State-of-the-art instrumentation is pushing these studies towards smaller exoplanets. Of special interest are the few planets in the 'Neptune desert', a lack of Neptune-size planets in close orbits around their hosts. Here, we assess the presence of water in one such planet, the bloated super-Neptune WASP-166 b, which orbits an F9-type star in a short orbit of 5.4 days. Despite its close-in orbit, WASP-166 b preserved its atmosphere, making it a benchmark target for exoplanet atmosphere studies in the desert. We analyse two transits observed in the visible with ESPRESSO. We clean the spectra from the Earth's telluric absorption via principal component analysis, which is crucial to the search for water in exoplanets. We use a cross-correlation-to-likelihood mapping to simultaneously estimate limits on the abundance of water and the altitude of a cloud layer, which points towards a low water abundance and/or high clouds. We tentatively detect a water signal blue-shifted ~5 km s-1 from the planetary rest frame. Injection and retrieval of model spectra show that a solar-composition, cloud-free atmosphere would be detected at high significance. This is only possible in the visible due to the capabilities of ESPRESSO and the collecting power of the VLT. Eclipsing binaries are important benchmark objects to test and calibrate stellar structure and evolution models. This is especially true for binaries with a fully convective M-dwarf component for which direct measurements of these stars' masses and radii are difficult using other techniques. Within the potential of M-dwarfs to be exoplanet host stars, the accuracy of theoretical predictions of their radius and effective temperature as a function of their mass is an active topic of discussion. Not only the parameters of transiting exoplanets but also the success of future atmospheric characterisation rely on accurate theoretical predictions. We present the analysis of five eclipsing binaries with low-mass stellar companions out of a sub-sample of 23, for which we obtained ultra high-precision light curves using the CHEOPS satellite. The observation of their primary and secondary eclipses are combined with spectroscopic measurements to precisely model the primary parameters and derive the M-dwarfs mass, radius, surface gravity, and effective temperature estimates using the PYCHEOPS data analysis software. Combining these results to the same set of parameters derived from TESS light curves, we find very good agreement (better than 1\% for radius and better than 0.2% for surface gravity). We also analyse the importance of precise orbits from radial velocity measurements and find them to be crucial to derive M-dwarf radii in a regime below 5% accuracy. S. Hoyer et al., [Context] The HD 108236 system was first announced with the detection of four small planets based on TESS data. Shortly after, the transit of an additional planet with a period of 29.54 d was serendipitously detected by CHEOPS. In this way, HD 108236 (V = 9.2) became one of the brightest stars known to host five small transiting planets (Rp < 3 R⊕)., [Aims] We characterize the planetary system by using all the data available from CHEOPS and TESS space missions. We use the flexible pointing capabilities of CHEOPS to follow up the transits of all the planets in the system, including the fifth transiting body., [Methods] After updating the host star parameters by using the results from Gaia eDR3, we analyzed 16 and 43 transits observed by CHEOPS and TESS, respectively, to derive the planets’ physical and orbital parameters. We carried out a timing analysis of the transits of each of the planets of HD 108236 to search for the presence of transit timing variations., [Results] We derived improved values for the radius and mass of the host star (R★ = 0.876 ± 0.007 R0 and M★ = 0.867-0.046+0.047M⊙). We confirm the presence of the fifth transiting planet f in a 29.54 d orbit. Thus, the HD 108236 system consists of five planets of Rb = 1.587±0.028, Rc = 2.122±0.025, Rd = 2.629 ± 0.031, Re = 3.008 ± 0.032, and Rf = 1.89 ± 0.04 [R⊕]. We refine the transit ephemeris for each planet and find no significant transit timing variations for planets c, d, and e. For planets b and f, instead, we measure significant deviations on their transit times (up to 22 and 28 min, respectively) with a non-negligible dispersion of 9.6 and 12.6 min in their time residuals., [Conclusions] We confirm the presence of planet f and find no significant evidence for a potential transiting planet in a 10.9 d orbital period, as previously suggested. Further monitoring of the transits, particularly for planets b and f, would confirm the presence of the observed transit time variations. HD 108236 thus becomes a key multi-planetary system for the study of formation and evolution processes. Even among the most irradiated gas giants, so-called ultra-hot Jupiters, KELT-9b stands out as the hottest planet thus far discovered with a dayside temperature of over 4500K. At these extreme irradiation levels, we expect an increase in heat redistribution efficiency and a low Bond albedo owed to an extended atmosphere with molecular hydrogen dissociation occurring on the planetary dayside. We present new photometric observations of the KELT-9 system throughout 4 full orbits and 9 separate occultations obtained by the 30cm space telescope CHEOPS. The CHEOPS bandpass, located at optical wavelengths, captures the peak of the thermal emission spectrum of KELT-9b. In this work we simultaneously analyse CHEOPS phase curves along with public phase curves from TESS and Spitzer to infer joint constraints on the phase curve variation, gravity-darkened transits, and occultation depth in three bandpasses, as well as derive 2D temperature maps of the atmosphere at three different depths. We find a day-night heat redistribution efficiency of $\sim$0.3 which confirms expectations of enhanced energy transfer to the planetary nightside due to dissociation and recombination of molecular hydrogen. We also calculate a Bond albedo consistent with zero. We find no evidence of variability of the brightness temperature of the planet, excluding variability greater than 1% (1$\sigma$)., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

KELT-11b is an inflated sub-Saturn with a hot atmosphere and that orbits a bright evolved subgiant star, making it a prime choice for atmospheric characterization, but that transits its host star for more than seven hours. We observed this system in series of three consecutive nights with the HARPS spectrograph and report on the analysis of the transmission spectrum obtained from this dataset. Our results highlight the potential for independent observations of a long-transiting planet over consecutive nights. Our study reveals a sodium excess absorption of $0.28 \pm 0.05 \%$ and $0.50 \pm 0.06 \%$ in the Na D1 and D2 lines, respectively. This corresponds to 1.44 and 1.69 times the white-light planet radius in the line cores. Wind pattern modeling tends to prefer day-to-night side winds with no vertical winds, which is surprising considering the planet bloatedness. The modeling of the Rossiter-Mclaughlin effect yields a significantly misaligned orbit, with a projected spin-orbit angle of ${\lambda} = -77.86^{+2.36}_{-2.26}{}^\circ$. The characteristics of KELT-11 b, notably its extreme scale height and long transit, make it an ideal and unique target for next-generation telescopes. Consideration of both low- and high-resolution transmission spectroscopy is key for obtaining a comprehensive picture of exoplanet atmospheres. In studies of transmission spectra, the continuum information is well established with low-resolution spectra, while the shapes of individual lines are best constrained with high-resolution observations. In this work, we aim to merge high- with low-resolution transmission spectroscopy to place tighter constraints on physical parameters of the atmospheres. We present the analysis of three primary transits of WASP-69 b in the visible (VIS) channel of the CARMENES instrument and perform a combined low- and high-resolution analysis using additional data from HARPS-N, OSIRIS/GTC, and WFC3/HST already available in the literature. We investigate the Na I D1 and D2 doublet, Hα, the Ca II infra-red triplet (IRT), and K I λ7699 Å lines, and we monitor the stellar photometric variability by performing long-term photometric observations with the STELLA telescope. During the first CARMENES observing night, we detected the planet Na I D2 and D1 lines at ∼7 and ∼3σ significance levels, respectively. We measured a D2/D1 intensity ratio of 2.5 ± 0.7, which is in agreement with previous HARPS-N observations. Our modelling of WFC3 and OSIRIS data suggests strong Rayleigh scattering, solar to super-solar water abundance, and a highly muted Na feature in the atmosphere of this planet, in agreement with previous investigations of this target. We use the continuum information retrieved from the low-resolution spectroscopy as a prior to break the degeneracy between the Na abundance, reference pressure, and thermosphere temperature for the high-resolution spectroscopic analysis. We fit the Na I D1 and D2 lines individually and find that the posterior distributions of the model parameters agree with each other within 1σ. We present seven new transiting hot Jupiters from the WASP-South survey. The planets are all typical hot Jupiters orbiting stars from F4 to K0 with magnitudes of V = 10.3 to 12.5. The orbital periods are all in the range 3.9--4.6 d, the planetary masses range from 0.4--2.3 Mjup and the radii from 1.1--1.4 Mjup. In line with known hot Jupiters, the planetary densities range from Jupiter-like to inflated (rho = 0.13--1.07 rho_jup). We use the increasing numbers of known hot Jupiters to investigate the distribution of their orbital periods and the 3--4-d "pile-up".

We obtained 74 hours of time-resolved CCD photometry of the pulsating DA white dwarf star WD 1524-0030 from three different sites well separated in longitude. We found evidence for amplitude variability with relative changes of ±10% and detected a total of 15 independent and 10 combination frequencies in our light curves. The large number of excited modes, the high amplitudes and nonsinusoidal light curves, the apparent brightness and the equatorial location on the sky make WD 1524-0030 an attractive target for future campaigns with the goal of asteroseismology and nonlinear light curve fitting.

International audience; We report on three new transiting hot Jupiter planets, discovered from the WASP surveys, which we combine with radial velocities from OHP/ SOPHIE and Euler/CORALIE and photometry from Euler and TRAPPIST. The planets WASP-76b, WASP-82b, and WASP-90b are all inflated, with radii of 1.7-1.8 R-Jup. All three orbit hot stars, of type F5-F7, with orbits of 1.8-3.9 d, and all three stars have evolved, post-main-sequence radii (1.7-2.2 R-circle dot). Thus the three planets fit a known trend of hot Jupiters that receive high levels of irradiation being highly inflated. We caution, though, about the presence of a selection effect, in that non-inflated planets around similar to 2 R-circle dot post-MS stars can often produce transits too shallow to be detected by the ground-based surveys that have found the majority of transiting hot Jupiters.

The motivation, techniques and performance of the ground-based photometric follow-up of transit detections by the CoRoT space mission are presented. Its principal raison d'\^{e}tre arises from the much higher spatial resolution of common ground-based telescopes in comparison to CoRoT's cameras. This allows the identification of many transit candidates as arising from eclipsing binaries that are contaminating CoRoT's lightcurves, even in low-amplitude transit events that cannot be detected with ground-based obervations. For the ground observations, 'on'-'off' photometry is now largely employed, in which only a short timeseries during a transit and a section outside a transit is observed and compared photometrically. CoRoT planet candidates' transits are being observed by a dedicated team with access to telescopes with sizes ranging from 0.2 to 2 m. As an example, the process that led to the rejection of contaminating eclipsing binaries near the host star of the Super-Earth planet CoRoT-7b is shown. Neuromuscular blockade can be relatively easily measured in the clinical setting. Consequently, closed-loop control can be exercised by measuring the neuromuscular activity, calculating the dose of drug necessary to achieve a predefined degree of neuromuscular blockade and finally directing an infusion pump. Recently introduced short-acting blocking agents like mivacurium provide benefits for the clinical routine due to a small onset time and half life. In order to provide a stable blockade for different groups of patients a fast and highly adaptable control unit is needed. Furthermore its development should not imply costly investigations for determining a pharmacological model. The fulfilling of these requirements yield a self-adapting model-based predictive control system. The application of artificial neural networks allows an appropriate adjustment of specific parameters without the knowledge of inner pharmacodynamic processes. In a clinical study the EMG module within a Datex AS/3 monitor was used to measure the blockade and a Grasepy 3500 infusion pump for i.v. administration of mivacurium to 35 patients (ASA I-III). The performance of the novel system (mean of the T1 error: -0.32 +/- 1.7) compares favourably with closed-loop controllers demonstrated in the past. These promising results and the easy adaption to other blocking agents encourage to apply this technology even for delivering hypnotic drugs.

The performance of the novel system (mean of the T/sub 1/-error: -0.32/spl plusmn/1.7) compares favourably with closed-loop controllers demonstrated in the past. These promising results and the easy adaption to other blocking agents encourage to apply this technology even for delivering hypnotic drugs.

There are many closed-loop control systems for muscle relaxants reported, but only a few could cope with the introduction of the latest shorter acting neuromuscular blocking drugs. These new muscle relaxants such as mivacurium require a fast adapting closed-loop system for controlling an adequate infusion.After approval of the local ethics committee and having the patients' informed consent a total number of 75 patients [ASA I and II] were included in the study and assigned either to a training-, prediction-, prediction-/feedback- or a validation phase, as needed. Anaesthesia was induced and maintained with propofol in a TCI-mode with a plasma level of 3 to 5 micrograms/ml and 0.1 mg fentanyl boli as needed in all patients. In the last validation phase, having 20 patients, the prediction error and the error of the whole system was taken and analysed.A closed-loop system using a neural network as a predictor could be established. In the final validation phase consisting of 20 patients the mean square prediction error was found to be 0.1% +/- 0.2% [mean +/- SD]. The mean square error of the whole system was 0.55% +/- 0.59% [mean +/- SD].A closed-loop system for control of a mivacurium infusion could be established. The system proofed to be reliable for a closed-loop infusion of mivacurium in order to maintain a predefined degree of neuromuscular blockade of 95% during routine surgery. The performance of the described controller is comparable to all recent attempts and could therefore be useful for scientific studies. It should be further validated and established for other muscle relaxants, as well.

In many fields of signal processing feed-forward neural networks, especially multilayer perceptron neural networks, are used as approximators. We suggest to state the weight adaptation process (training) as an optimization procedure solving a conventional nonlinear regression problem. Thus the presented theory can easily be adapted to any similar problem.

Closed-loop systems have been proved as adequate for automated drug administration. They provide significant advantages for the patient as well as for the anaesthetist. In essence three different types of implementing the control unit have been established: the classical linear controller (e.g., PID, adaptive PID), rule-based systems (e.g., fuzzy logic), and model-based controller (e.g., PK/PD models). Major drawbacks of these implementations can be found in the limited flexibility or the expendable procedures for determining appropriate rules and/or model parameters. Our novel approach, applying neural networks in a predictive model-based design, is able to overcome the depicted difficulties. The performance has been verified by clinical investigations using the short acting non-depolarizing muscle relaxants mivacurium. The obtained results encourage further research using hypnotic drugs.

We report on the discovery of GJ3470b, a transiting hot Uranus of mass m_p = 14.0+-1.8 Mearth, radius R_p = 4.2+-0.6 Rearth and period P=3.3371+-0.0002 day. Its host star is a nearby (d=25.2+-2.9pc) M1.5 dwarf of mass M_s=0.54+-0.07 Msol and radius R_s=0.50+-0.06 Rsol. The detection originates from a radial-velocity campaign with HARPS that focused on the search for short-period planets orbiting M dwarfs. Once the planet was discovered and the transit-search window narrowed to about 10% of an orbital period, a photometric search started with TRAPPIST and quickly detected the ingress of the planet. Additional observations with TRAPPIST, EulerCam and NITES definitely confirmed the transiting nature of GJ3470b and allow for the determination of its true mass and radius. The star's visible or infrared brightness (V=12.3, K=8.0 mag), together with a large eclipse depth D=0.57+-0.05%, ranks GJ3470b among the most favorable planets for follow-up characterizations., Comment: submitted to A&A on 18/05/2012 (revised version)

Montgomery [1] developed a method to probe convection in pulsating white dwarf stars which allows the recovery of the thermal response time of the convection zone by fitting observed nonsinusoidal light curves. He applied this method to two objects; the Whole Earth Telescope (WET) observed the pulsating DB white dwarf GD 358 for just this purpose. Given this WET run's success, it is time to extend Montgomery's method to pulsating DA white dwarf (ZZ Ceti) stars. We present observations of two ZZ Ceti stars, WD 1524—0030 and EC 14012—1446, both observed from multiple sites. EC 14012—1446 seems better suited thAN WD1524—0030 for a future WET run because it has more pulsation modes excited and because it pulsation spectrum appears to be more stable in time. We call for participation in this effort to take place in April 2008.

A novel algorithm for estimating the noise variance of an image is presented. The image is assumed to be corrupted by Gaussian distributed noise. The algorithm estimates the noise variance in three steps. At first the noisy image is filtered by a horizontal and a vertical difference operator to suppress the influence of the (unknown) original image. In a second step a histogram of local signal variances is computed. Finally a statistical evaluation of the histogram provides the desired estimation value. For a comparison with several previously published estimation methods an ensemble of 128 natural and artificial test images is used. It is shown that with the novel algorithm more accurate results can be achieved.
