Abstract

Georeferenced reconstructions can help understand the dynamic evolution of the urban context surrounding a historical site, supporting decision-making processes in the field of urban planning. The development of web applications that allow the interaction between 2D and 3D products, as well as their exploration, can facilitate virtual inspections and foster collaboration in digitization of interventions and site evolutions over time. The article discusses how virtual scene reconstructions and visits can provide alternatives to traditional in-situ tourism promotion, through digital storytelling solutions for the exploration of sites. The article also describes how 3D storytelling technologies are currently being used for dissemination cultural heritage sites. The case study of the Castello Farnese, an old XVI century heritage site in Piacenza (Italy), test the adoption of two distinct free and open-source JavaScript WebGL, Potree and Cesium, for the rendering of photogrammetric and laser scanning georeferenced scaled products and for the integration of narrative features such as annotations, camera animations, texts, and other multimedia contents. Potentials and limitations of both tools are discussed in detail, highlighting how they can be implemented for enhancing user experience in virtual tour and exploration of 3D products. In order to guarantee replicability for other case studies, source code of the implemented application is shared on GitHub along with its documentation for contributions.

Abstract

Aim. To assess the changes in cardiology diagnostics scope in the Russian Federation during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.Material and methods. In an online survey organized by the Division of Human Health of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), including questions about changes in the workflow of diagnostic laboratories and the scope of cardiac diagnostics from March 2019 (pre-pandemic) to April 2020 (first wave of the pandemic) and April 2021 (recovery stage), 15 Russian medical centers from 5 cities took part.Results. The decrease in the diagnostics scope by April 2020 by 59,3% compared to March 2019, by April 2021, stopped and was replaced by growth (+7,1%, the recovery rate, 112,1%). The greatest increase was in routine examinations, such as echocardiography (+11,6%), stress echocardiography (+18,7%), stress single photon emission computed tomography (+9,7%), and to a lesser extent resting computed tomography angiography (+7,0%) and magnetic resonance imaging (+6,6%). The performance of stress electrocardiography, stress magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography for the diagnosis of endocarditis in April 2021 compared to March 2019 decreased by 10,3%, 63,2% and 62,5%, respectively.Conclusion. Due to the resumption of patient admissions for cardiac examinations during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with the anti-epidemic measures taken and certain changes in the workflow, there has been a recovery in the diagnostics scope in most of the included centers.

Abstract

Aim. To assess the impact of the first wave of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the diagnosis of heart disease in the Russian Federation.Material and methods. Fifteen Russian medical centers from 5 cities took part in an online survey organized by the Division of Human Health of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), containing questions regarding alterations in cardiovascular procedure volumes resulting from COVID-19 in March-April 2020.Results. A number of outpatients undergoing cardiac diagnostic procedures was noted in 80% of clinics. Cardiovascular procedure volumes in the period from March 2019 to March 2020 in general decreased by 9,5%, and from March 2019 to April 2020, by 56,5%. Stress electrocardiography decreased by 38,4%, stress echocardiography by 72,5%, stress single-photon emission computed tomography by 66,9%, computed tomography angiography by 49,7%, magnetic resonance imaging by 42,7%, invasive coronary angiography by 40,7%. Abstract

Objectives This study sought to establish worldwide and regional diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) and achievable administered activities (AAAs) for single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI). Background Reference levels serve as radiation dose benchmarks to compare individual laboratories against aggregated data, helping to identify sites in greatest need of dose reduction interventions. DRLs for SPECT MPI have previously been derived from national or regional registries. To date there have been no multiregional reports of DRLs for SPECT MPI from a single standardized dataset. Methods Data were submitted voluntarily to the INCAPS (International Atomic Energy Agency Nuclear Cardiology Protocols Study), a cross-sectional, multinational registry of MPI protocols. A total of 7,103 studies were included. DRLs and AAAs were calculated by protocol for each world region and for aggregated worldwide data. Results The aggregated worldwide DRLs for rest-stress or stress-rest studies employing technetium Tc 99m–labeled radiopharmaceuticals were 11.2 mCi (first dose) and 32.0 mCi (second dose) for 1-day protocols, and 23.0 mCi (first dose) and 24.0 mCi (second dose) for multiday protocols. Corresponding AAAs were 10.1 mCi (first dose) and 28.0 mCi (second dose) for 1-day protocols, and 17.8 mCi (first dose) and 18.7 mCi (second dose) for multiday protocols. For stress-only technetium Tc 99m studies, the worldwide DRL and AAA were 18.0 mCi and 12.5 mCi, respectively. Stress-first imaging was used in 26% to 92% of regional studies except in North America where it was used in just 7% of cases. Significant differences in DRLs and AAAs were observed between regions. Conclusions This study reports reference levels for SPECT MPI for each major world region from one of the largest international registries of clinical MPI studies. Regional DRLs may be useful in establishing or revising guidelines or simply comparing individual laboratory protocols to regional trends. Organizations should continue to focus on establishing standardized reporting methods to improve the validity and comparability of regional DRLs.

Abstract

The ceramic tile industry is a big consumer of feldspathic rocks and further raw materials able to act as flux during firing. This demand is currently fed with the recourse to a wide range of sources of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and metasomatic origin. The main geological features of flux deposits actually exploited by the ceramic industry are reviewed. The chemical and mineralogical composition is described to have a general picture of raw fluxes as well as average data and compositional perimeter for deposits of different origin. Overall beneficiation routes are drawn to trace the compositional path from deposit to commercial flux. The technological behavior in tile-making is shortly overviewed and new experimental data are provided on flux fusibility (by hot-stage microscopy). A chart is proposed to discriminate fluxes according to different fusibility.

Abstract

Objectives This study sought to describe worldwide variations in the use of myocardial perfusion imaging hardware, software, and imaging protocols and their impact on radiation effective dose (ED). Background Concerns about long-term effects of ionizing radiation have prompted efforts to identify strategies for dose optimization in myocardial perfusion scintigraphy. Studies have increasingly shown opportunities for dose reduction using newer technologies and optimized protocols. Methods Data were submitted voluntarily to the INCAPS (International Atomic Energy Agency Nuclear Cardiology Protocols Study) registry, a multinational, cross-sectional study comprising 7,911 imaging studies from 308 labs in 65 countries. The study compared regional use of camera technologies, advanced post-processing software, and protocol characteristics and analyzed the influence of each factor on ED. Results Cadmium-zinc-telluride and positron emission tomography (PET) cameras were used in 10% (regional range 0% to 26%) and 6% (regional range 0% to 17%) of studies worldwide. Attenuation correction was used in 26% of cases (range 10% to 57%), and advanced post-processing software was used in 38% of cases (range 26% to 64%). Stress-first single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging comprised nearly 20% of cases from all world regions, except North America, where it was used in just 7% of cases. Factors associated with lower ED and odds ratio for achieving radiation dose ≤9 mSv included use of cadmium-zinc-telluride, PET, advanced post-processing software, and stress- or rest-only imaging. Overall, 39% of all studies (97% PET and 35% SPECT) were ≤9 mSv, while just 6% of all studies (32% PET and 4% SPECT) achieved a dose ≤3 mSv. Conclusions Newer-technology cameras, advanced software, and stress-only protocols were associated with reduced ED, but worldwide adoption of these practices was generally low and varied significantly between regions. The implementation of dose-optimizing technologies and protocols offers an opportunity to reduce patient radiation exposure across all world regions.

Abstract

The European regulations encourage industries towards a green and circular economy in which “reuse” and “preparation for reuse” are keywords to reach an Innovating-to-Zero, ideal future at zero emission, zero waste and zero non-recyclable products. Directive 2008/98/EC sets the basic concepts and definitions related to waste management, such as the definition of waste, recycling and recovery. Waste and resources are positively defined as End-of-Waste material. The manufacturing of ceramic tiles is a traditional way for waste recovery with an increasing industrial interest and growing number of scientific papers.

Abstract

Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate gender-based differences in nuclear cardiology practice globally, with a particular focus on laboratory volume, radiation dose, protocols, and best practices. Background It is unclear whether gender-based differences exist in radiation exposure for nuclear cardiology procedures. Methods In a large, multicenter, observational, cross-sectional study encompassing 7,911 patients in 65 countries, radiation effective dose was estimated for each examination. Patient-level best practices relating to radiation exposure were compared between genders. Analysis of covariance was used to determine any difference in radiation exposure according to gender, region, and the interaction between gender and region. Linear, logistic, and hierarchical regression models were developed to evaluate gender-based differences in radiation exposure and laboratory adherence to best practices. The study also included the United Nations Gender Inequality Index and Human Development Index as covariates in multivariable models. Results The proportion of myocardial perfusion imaging studies performed in women varied among countries; however, there was no significant correlation with the Gender Inequality Index. Globally, mean effective dose for nuclear cardiology procedures was only slightly lower in women (9.6 ± 4.5 mSv) than in men (10.3 ± 4.5 mSv; p Conclusions Despite significant worldwide variation in best practice use and radiation doses from nuclear cardiology procedures, only small differences were observed between genders worldwide. Regional variations noted in myocardial perfusion imaging use and radiation dose offer potential opportunities to address gender-related differences in delivery of nuclear cardiology care.

Abstract

This publication collects the proceedings of the first Workshop for Young Ceramists: Promoting research results & Selection for the Student Speech Contest (XVI ECerS) held in Bologna on 26-27 November 2018. A variety of topics spanning from synthesis and processing, to production and characterization of ceramic materials such as bioceramics, structural ceramics, silicate and electro-opticmagneto ceramics, are collected. The event is addressed to students and young researchers at the early career stage involved in the study of ceramic materials and it aims to encourage the young participants to improve presenting performance and optimize written and oral contributions. Indeed, it is well established that scientific communication, either written and oral, is more effective if performed with suitable tools. The workshop has a twofold objective: to increase awareness towards the presenting method of results and promote a scientific debate in a fully multidisciplinary context within ceramic science and technology. Targeted lessons provide useful insights to enhance the quality of scientific presentations using different communication methods, including: how to write, send and promote documents, share and show research data. The invited speakers are: - Paula Vilarinho, Centre for Research in Ceramics and Composite Materials, University of Aveiro, Portugal, provided key elements for a successful presentation; - Alessandro Sarretta, CNR, Bologna, Italy, introduced new types of publications (e.g. data papers, highlights, short communications ...). - Maike Pools EMEA, Jove London, UK, presented new types of publications (videos and audiovisual, short movies). Valuable suggestions about the quality and style of young participants talks by the invited speakers also welcome. At the Workshop, the nomination of the best Italian candidate for the Student Speech Contest at the next XVI ECerS Conference 2019 Turin on 16-20 June takes place as well. Process for preparing stable suspensions of metal nanoparticles and the stable colloidal suspensions obtained thereby Field of the invention The present invention relates to the field of suspensions of nanometer-sized metal particles and to their preparation methods. State of the art Because of their versatility and the numerous areas where they find application, metal nanoparticle suspensions are of great interest for industry. In particular, by virtue of their physicochemical characteristics, metal nanoparticles have important applications in various fields: biomedical, optical and electronic devices, and catalysts. In the medico-biological sector, said nanoparticles are widely studied for their antibacterial and antifungal properties, the antibacterial effect reported to increase with increasing concentration of metal in the suspension and for sizes less than 50 nm. The antimicrobial effect of silver can be utilized on various types of materials: prostheses (e.g. silver-loaded hydroxyapatite), plastic sanitary materials, epidermis, materials for dental use, steel, ceramic tiles, textiles and also for water treatment. From the literature it transpires that there is a need for suspensions that are time stable, obtained from reagents with low environmental impact. Recently, nanoparticulate silver has been investigated for applications in a more specific biomedical field; for example, interactions between nanoparticulate silver and viruses such as HIV have been observed, demonstrating its ability to inhibit them. Furthermore, other studies report the ability of nano-metal to destroy tumour cells. Other applications that exploit the optical properties typical of nanometric silver and other noble metals, characterized by the phenomenon of surface plasmon resonance, are surface Raman spectroscopy, optical devices and sensors, diagnostic medicine and biological imaging. Silver nanoparticles are also investigated for their catalytic properties, which are particularly important if they are synthesized together with other metals or oxides (supported catalysts). The optical and biological properties of silver nanoparticles, and the possibility of transferring the synthesis technique to industry, mainly depend on characteristics such as: high concentration, stability of the suspensions in time and dimension control. The methods proposed in the literature cannot provide for all these requirements together. Indeed, faced with the innumerable applications for nanoparticulate silver, many synthesis methods are reported in the state of the art which are often able to control both particle shape and size. In the many published studies, however, it is noted that for colloidal systems the considered concentrations are in most cases very low, and usually between 0.001 and 0.005 M even if the concentration is defined as high. Cases are reported with 0.05-0.06 M concentrations and a maximum of 0.2 M, but they involve syntheses consisting of precipitation of the solid or the presence of a stabilizing polymer in such excess as to form a metallopolymer composite. Also, the stability over time of the synthesized systems is rarely referred to, with, in one case, a maximum stability of 24 hours being reported for a 0.2 M concentration. The use of low concentrations enables smaller and more stable particles to be obtained, but for the purpose of industrial use and scale-up it is important to be able to work with medium-high concentrations in order to make the production cycles economically advantageous, by synthesizing a concentrated system which can be diluted in subsequent stages if necessary. Furthermore, a higher concentration enables the chromic characteristics of silver to be exploited and its antibacterial and antifungal properties to be enhanced, given that it allows more concentrated suspensions to be applied to the surfaces to be treated. 20. 'Microwave polyol synthesis of Cu nanoparticles'

Abstract

Microwave heating was applied to synthesize copper colloidal nanoparticles by a polyol method that exploits the chelating and reducing power of a polidentate alcohol (diethyleglycol). The synthesis was carried out in the presence of eco-friendly additives such as ascorbic acid (reducing agent) and polyvinylpirrolidone (chelating polymer) to improve the reduction kinetics and sols stability. Prepared suspensions, obtained with very high reaction yield, were stable for months in spite of the high metal concentration. In order to optimize the suspensions, synthesis parameters were modified and the effects on particle size, optical properties, and reaction yield were investigated. XRD analysis, STEM and DLS measurements confirmed that prepared sols consist of crystalline metallic copper with a diameter ranging from 65 to 130 nm. Surface plasmon resonance of Cu nanoparticles was monitored by UV-VIS spectroscopy showing both a red shift and a band weakening for nanoparticles diameter increase. Microwave use provides rapid and uniform heating of reagents and solvent, accelerating the reduction of metal precursor and the nucleation of metal cluster, resulting in monodispersed nanostructures. The proposed microwave assisted synthesis, usable also in large scale continuous production, enables process intensification, making this method of preparation an environment-friendly route for metallic nanoparticles synthesis.

Abstract

The high-pressure behaviour of the thaumasite structure was investigated using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction, up to 19.5 GPa. Based on Rietveld refinements, thaumasite retained the roompressure P63 space group throughout the whole investigated pressure range while the pressure dependence of the refined unit-cell parameters can be cast into three different compression regimes, each corresponding to a different thaumasite phase (th-I, th-II and th-III) related by isosymmetric phase transitions. In particular, the phase transition in the 7.40–15.02 GPa P-range (i.e. from th-II to th-III) is associated with an inversion of the axial bulk moduli which, by analogy with ettringite, can be rationalized as due to a change in the relative strengths of the iono-covalent bonds along the [Ca3Si(OH)6(H2O)12]4+ columns parallel to the c axis vs. the O–H bonds linking the columns within the ab plane. The linear inverse relationship between the low- and high-temperature data from the literature with those collected under high-pressure conditions reveals that the same bonding regime governs the anisotropic expansion and contraction of thaumasite up to ~1.4 GPa and 400 K (HP-HT stability limits of th-I phase).

Abstract

The improvement of the physico-chemical resistance of hematite pigment in ceramic bodies has been pursued through its inclusion into a transparent and refractory matrix of silica or zirconia. The inclusion process was accomplished by heterocoagulation followed by spray-drying. The heterocoagulation process was optimised through an electrokinetic technique, that measured the zeta potential of both matrix and pigment as a function of pH and of different amounts of dispersing agents. Suspensions of pigment and matrix were designed in order to achieve the maximum surface charges. The heterocoagulated mix was then spray-dried in order to avoid any separated coagulation of pigment and matrix and to obtain a well granulated powder suitable for application in ceramic bodies. A stable red-coloured ceramic pigment for low firing applications was obtained starting from amorphous silica as matrix and hematite as colorant.

Abstract

Alumina-pillared smectites have been found to abate nitrous oxide in the presence of methane. The results indicate that the yield of the reaction (N2O→N2+(1/2)O2) increases when pillared clays are exchanged with transition metals, single-pass conversion rates of >70% being attainable. In particular, when double exchanged (calcium and subsequently copper) alumina pillared montmorillonite/beidellite is used as a catalyst, de-N2O activity reaches a maximum, which is maintained even after 4 h of work at a space velocity of 5.5 h−1. A mechanism for the reaction is suggested, which implies that N2O is first adsorbed by the catalyst and then decomposes through two different paths: catalyst oxidation and catalyst reduction. Such a redox process explains the kinetic data.

Abstract

Il riflesso di trasalimento (startle) si presenta, sin dalla nascita, come una ri- sposta motoria di tipo multicomponenziale a stimoli brevi, improvvisi e di forte inten- sità. L’analisi di tale risposta ha trovato una vasta applicazione all’interno delle disci- pline dello sviluppo, in particolare di area medica e psicologica. In ambito medico, lo startle è utilizzato, soprattutto in epoca neonatale, come un precoce indice diagnostico di patologie a carico del SNC, mediante la valutazione della complessa risposta moto- ria che coinvolge l’intero corpo del bambino. La ricerca psicologica si focalizza, invece, sull’analisi di una singola componente della risposta: il riflesso di ammiccamento palpe- brale (eyeblink). Tramite la misurazione di questo riflesso, lo startle è considerato prin- cipalmente uno strumento d’indagine dello sviluppo cognitivo ed emotivo. Questo la- voro propone una rassegna delle principali procedure diagnostiche e sperimentali adot- tate in ambito medico e psicologico. Infine, soffermandosi principalmente sulle lacune di tipo misurativo presenti in entrambe le aree esaminate, viene evidenziata la necessità della messa a punto di nuove metodologie misurative per la rilevazione della risposta di startle nelle prime fasi dello sviluppo.

Abstract

The inclusion of coloured inorganic phases inside transparent and refractory matrixes is studied in order to obtain ceramic pigments thermally and chemically stable during the firing of ceramic supports. In this work a new heterocoagulation/spray-drying two step process was set up and optimized to form coatings of inert matrixes on iron oxide (hematite) surface. Hematite and inert matrix water suspensions were separately prepared and the colloidal stability evaluated through measurements of zeta potential with an electroacoustic technique. Once the experimental conditions for the maximum surface charges attraction were established, the pigment and inert matrix suspensions were mixed each other and the heterocoagulation achieved. The heterocoagulated mixtures were spray-dried and the resulting included pigments applied to the ceramic bodies. The chemical-physical characterization of spray-dried powders was performed (ICP, SEM, XRD) in order to to appraise the process efficiency. The technological performances of included pigments were evaluated into different ceramic matrices fired at typical working temperatures (980-1200°C). The chromatic appearance (CIELab parameters) of the resulting products was evaluated by DRS. An improvement of hematite stability for low firing applications was obtained starting from amorphous silica as matrix. An intense red colour resulted in the glazes fired at 980°C where included pigment was applied in comparison with light grey colour resulting by the application of hematite alone or silica/hematite dry mechanical mixture (blank). In order to obtain a pigment stable for higher firing temperatures more refractory ceramic matrixes were also investigated and some preliminary results presented.

A área de corantes é uma das mais conservadoras no setor de fabricação de placas cerâmicas. A redução de custos e o impacto sobre a saúde e o meio ambiente têm sido a força motriz na fabricação de pigmentos e os principais objetivos tecnológicos eram rotas mais rápidas de síntese e minimização de componentes e aditivos perigosos. O advento da decoração digital é analisado em relação a esta mudança de paradigma, de corante à tinta. Os requisitos para impressão por jato de tinta são revistos: propriedades reológicas, tensão superficial, potencial zeta, sedimentação, tamanho e forma de gota, cinética de penetração, tamanho de partícula, controle das propriedades elétricas, estabilidade em meio orgânico, maior força de cor. Como os pigmentos e matrizes convencionais comprovaram não serem adequados para a decoração digital, os fabricantes de corantes foram forçados a incrementar o processamento (etapa de micronização para os pigmentos) e a se envolverem no projeto da tinta (melhorando a força de cor para as matrizes). Desta forma, diferentes classes de corantes para tinta digital foram desenvolvidas: complexos organometálicos, pigmentos micronizados, metais coloidais, nanopigmentos e precursores sol reativos para síntese in situ. Os principais desafios para os fabricantes de tinta ainda são a estabilidade com o tempo (algumas vezes limitada a algumas semanas) e a gama (muito mais estreita que a dos corantes cerâmicos convencionais). Além disto, a quadricromia típica ou a hexacromia ainda são difíceis de serem obtidas com os corantes cerâmicos e os fabricantes de placas estão sempre selecionando paletas de cores não convencionais baseadas em tons de marrom. Esta circunstância está reavivando o interesse industrial para rotas alternativas de síntese de pigmentos (processos "bottom up") e soluções tecnológicas para melhorar o desempenho da cor (pigmentos revestidos, estruturas núcleo-casca, uso de iniciadores e tampões). As propriedades físico-químicas das tintas, que afetam a estabilidade com o tempo, estão se tornando críticas com a difusão crescente da decoração digital. Desta forma, tecnologias para o controle das suspensões coloidais e para o projeto de compósitos híbridos orgânico-inorgânicos estão tendo cada vez mais interesse e potencial de aplicação.

Abstract

ZusammenfassungEs wurden die Ergebnisse der Standardtechnik Stress-Redistribution, (R1) mit jenen nach Reinjektion von 37 MBq sofort nach der ersten Spätaufnahme und Bilddokumentation nach 15 min (R2), mit jenen einer Spätaufnahme nach 24 h (R3) und mit jenen, die mit einer zeitlich versetzten Ruheinjektion (R4) gemacht wurden, bei 24 Patienten mit vorangegangenem Herzinfarkt verglichen. Die in drei Projektionsebenen angefertigten planaren Bilder wurden in 216 Segmente unterteilt. Die Anreicherung des 201TI wurde mittels eines subjektiven Scores bzw. semiquantitativer Analyse der Flächen, die aus dem Circumferenzprofil gewonnen wurden, bewertet. Ein Speicherungsdefekt wurde unter Belastung in 127 Segmenten bestätigt (58,7%); die visuelle Analyse konnte eine verbesserte Anreicherung in R1 (32,3%), in R2 (41,7%), in R3 (33%) und in R4 (49,6%) feststellen. Die semiquantitative Bewertung hat nur mit der R1- Methode (62% der Fälle) eine Verbesserung erbracht. Es wurde bei 6 Patienten (25% der Fälle) vitales Myokard nachgewiesen, welches nicht mit der konventionellen Analyse identifiziert werden konnte.

Abstract

Ceramic inks based on titania or spinel nanoparticles are gaining more and more industrial interest in different fields (e.g. photocatalysis and ink-jet printing decoration). The ink performance and behaviour depend widely on crystal structure and size of as synthesized nanoparticles and on the evolution of these features during heating as well. A direct determination of the crystal structure of nanoparticles (10-30 nm observed under TEM) both dried as powders and dispersed in the ink was performed by temperature-resolved synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (ESRF Grenoble, GILDA line). Phase transformations and the evolution of unit-cell parameters and crystallite size were monitored during heating up to 900 °C of TiO2 (pure and co-doped with Cr+Sb and V+Sb). Titania inks phase composition and crystallite size depend upon type of dopants and synthesis method. More in details, when the synthesis was carried out in glycol, crystallite size ranges between 5 and 10 nm up to 240°C and the only phase detected is anatase up to 700°C when rutile begins to appear. Whenever the synthesis is carried out in water, crystallite size ranges between 5 to 6 nm up to 100°C and the samples is biphasic (anatase plus brookite) while rutile begins to appear at 430°C. In vanadium doped samples, anatase completely transformed in rutile in less than 50°C, starting from 690°C, while in Cr-doped samples the only phase detected up to 950°C was anatase.

45. Microstructure and mechanical properties of Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 glass-ceramics

Abstract

Glass-ceramics are fine-grained polycrystalline materials formed when glasses of suitable composition are heat- treated and undergo controlled crystallisation. Their design consists in the choice of both chemical composition and firing cycle. Glass-ceramics can be used as bulk as well as, after being ground, as powders. Their application widens in many fields such as the electronic and biomedical one, but also as raw materials for both ceramic bodies and glazes. Moreover, they can be prepared through melting of raw materials and cast in order to form laminar sheets further used as facing tiles in buildings. In this work, microstructure and mechanical properties of two lithium-aluminosilicate-based glass-ceramics (LAS) have been characterised in order to investigate the relationships among process conditions, phase composition, microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties. In detail, microstructure was studied by scanning electron microscopy and phase composition by X-ray powder diffraction performed at both room and high temperature, followed by Rietveld refinements of data. Ultrasound speed, flexural stength, young's modulus, poisson's ratio, fracture toughness and Vickers hardness were measured. Moreover, the study of the weakening effect due to the industrial finishing process was carried out, comparing the results of fracture strength tests carried out on both industrial finished samples and samples finished according to the European standard EN 843-2. The most suitable firing cycle, determining crystalline composition and crystallite size, was designed by combining microstructural and phase composition analyses, achieving an insight also in glassy phase amount and composition. The results of mechanical characterisation have confirmed that such materials have outstanding performances for facing tiles application (modulus of rupture up to 200 MPa and fracture toughness around 2 MPa.m1/2). Mechanical properties resulted mostly influenced by process conditions, for example by thermal cycle and finishing procedure.

47. Physical and rheological properties of nano-sized ceramic inks

Abstract

Inks for direct ceramic ink-jet printing (DCIJP) are stable suspensions of a pigment dispersed in an organic/inorganic medium. Pigments must penetrate easily the surface of unfired glazes and bodies and must be refractory during firing. Research on ceramic decoration is focussing on nano-sized pigments, due to their stability in a ceramic ink and ability to bestow reliability to the printing system, in order to formulate ceramic inks suitable for DCIJP. In fact, micro-milled pigments cause problems, such as nozzle occlusion and difficult penetration in green ceramic bodies, that can be overcome by using nano-sized pigments, which however are difficult to be wet dispersed once synthesised as nanopowders. This work is aimed at optimising the ink application in DCIJP and its penetration in semi-finished ceramic tiles. Four different ceramic inks, with various pigment concentration, suitable for the four-colour process, were characterized studying both physical and rheological properties; in particular, particle size distribution, density, surface tension, viscosity, electrical conductivity and Z-potential were measured. Moreover, the penetration kinetics into different unfired bodies was experimentally appraised by evaluating the amount of ink absorbed in the unit of time and of surface area by the porous substrate. Results show that all the inks are stable and both surface tension and viscosity fulfil the requirements for DCIJP. Besides ceramic ink viscosity varies of more than one order of magnitude heating the inks from 25 to 85°C. The electrical conductivity is influenced by pigment composition. Concerning the penetration kinetics, it is mostly influenced by pigment concentration and composition, though it changes significantly depending on the substrate composition, microstructure and processing.

48. Predicting the frost resistance of clay roofing tiles: a reappraisal of mercury intrusion porosimetry

Abstract

The indirect prediction of frost resistance of bricks and tiles has been thoroughly investigated in the last decades, mainly on the basis of microstructural and physical features. This empirical approach gave rise to several models based on pore size, open porosity, water absorption and/or capillary rise. The present study is aimed at appraising these models on 13 industrially-manufactured roofing tiles with a different frost resistance determined by severe freeze/thaw testing (EN 539-2). Samples were characterised by measuring pore size distribution (MIP), pore specific surface (BET), open porosity and water absorption (ASTM C67 and C373), capillary rise (UNI 10859), microstructure (SEM) and phase composition (Rietveld-XRPD). No model is able to foresee reliably the frost resistance of roofing tiles, being the methods based exclusively on pore size (e.g. Maage durability index) somehow better, as water absorption and/or capillary rise data do not improve the prediction. All these empirical models exhibit a strong dependence on the data population and probably succeed only with a homogeneous sample in terms of both composition and manufacturing technology. Just the Maage's method is able to discriminate among scarcely (400 cycles), though many roofing tiles with the same durability factor were found to withstand between 100 and 400 cycles. The tiles with a frost resistance higher than expected, on the basis of their pore size distribution, contain abundant calcium-magnesium silicate phases formed during firing (e.g. anorthite, diopside) while products with a frost resistance lower than expected are characterised by large amounts of amorphous phase or residual mica-illite and quartz. This circumstance indicates a new way to achieve highly frost resistant roofing tiles that is alternative to the conventional design imposing microstructural rearrangements (low porosity and coarse pore size) through drastic batch changes and/or firing at higher temperature.

Abstract

This study aimed at assessing the impact of attenuation correction performed by means of a new hardware device (Beacon(tm)) in the assessment of coronary artery disease with myocardial SPECT and, afterwards, at identifying what specific risk class of patients would mostly benefit from the technique.The first 500 consecutive patients, referred to our facility for coronary artery disease (CAD) assessment, were included in this study. Myocardial SPECT was performed after i.v. of 740 MBq of (99m)Tc Tetrofosmin (Myoview, Amersham Health) both after stress and at rest. Studies were acquired by means of a 3 head system (IRIX, Philips Medical System) equipped with the Beacontm option to correct for non-uniform attenuation. Out of the whole population studied, 130 patients underwent coronary angiography (CAG), 108 of which were proven to be affected by significant CAD, defined as a50% coronary vessel lumen reduction. Attenuation corrected (AC) as well as non-attenuation corrected studies (NAC) were reconstructed, blindly read and qualified as: normal; borderline normal; borderline abnormal and definitely abnormal.In the group of 130 patients who underwent CAG, sensitivity for CAD detection did not vary significantly (96% and 93%, for NAC and AC studies, respectively, p=ns) whereas specificity increased from 73% (NAC studies) to 91% (AC studies), p0.01. Normalcy rate, assessed in a small subgroup (n=21) with a5% likelihood for CAD, was found to be 80% for NAC studies vs 93% for AC studies (p0.05). As regards synthetic clinical judgements, when we grouped normal and probably normal readings into a single ''normal'' category and, conversely, probably abnormal and definitely abnormal into a single ''pathological'' category, we see that after attenuation correction studies reported as ''pathological'' are reclassified as ''normal'' in 17.8% of the cases (25.2% in males and 6.9% in females, p0.05). The opposite is seen in only 1.6% of the cases (1.3% in males and 4.4% in females). According to established criteria, 155 patients were classified at low risk for CAD (15%), 115 at intermediate risk (from15% to50%) and 230 at high risk (50%). The intermediate risk class showed the greatest impact: ''normal'' findings increased from 52% to 72%, thus reducing the rate of ''pathological'' reports from 48% to 28%.This study shows that, while sensitivity for CAD is not affected by attenuation correction, specificity increases significantly, as well as normalcy rate. Out of the whole population studied, the main finding was that attenuation correction increases the rate of normal reports, more frequently in males than in females, and that studies carried out in patients at intermediate risk for CAD are more likely to be affected.
