Introduction: hydatid cysts are produced by the Echinococcus granulosus parasite. The single location in the muscles is rare. The cystic mass can be confirmed by ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and its differential diagnosis may be difficult. Material and method: We present a case with a tumorous mass in thigh with MRI report: "encapsulated cystic lesion dependent on the biceps femoris, which contacts the sciatic neurovascular bundle, being the 1st diagnostic possibility hydatid cyst". Mebendazole was prescribed and after a month the tumor was excised, which was not located within the muscle but rather pushing it, attached to the sciatic nerve. Diagnosis after anatomopathological study was sciatic schwannoma. Discussion and conclusion: on MRI, schwannomas are usually seen as a mass adhered and eccentric to a nerve, but they can present cystic degeneration mimicking hydatidic cyst; Faced with a single muscular or perimuscular cystic tumor, close to the neurovascular bundle, with negative systemic tests for parasite disease, the schwannoma should be taken into account in the differential diagnosis.

Fluid flow and rock mechanics become coupled in various important phenomena in Geosciences. In order to study this coupling, laboratory work has been carried out in triaxial cells along the years for various rock and fluid types at different confinement stress and pore pressure conditions. In a similar way, poromechanic models have been developed to simulate them, in which constitutive porosity and permeability correlation models in terms of strain, stress and fluid pressure have to be provided. However, to date, the applicability of the available correlation models to describe this phenomenon in different types of rock remains to be analyzed. In this work, a single-phase poroelastic model is applied to simulate a published geomechanical test performed in sandstones to examine the capacity of commonly used constitutive porosity and permeability correlations to describe the behavior of a homogeneous poroelastic medium. After discussing the results, we conclude that for this sandstone, the best permeability constitutive correlation model is Walder and Nur.

The influence of the stereogenic hydroxylic carbon at the δ-position of the carbonyl group in 1,5-bis( p -tolylsulfinyl)-4-hydroxy-2-pentanone 1 and 2,6-bis( p -tolylsulfinyl)-5-hydroxy-3-hexanones 2 on the stereochemical course of DIBALH and DIBALH/ZnBr 2 reductions has been studied. In contrast with the DIBALH reductions of β-hydroxyketones, that are monitored by the hydroxylic stereogenic carbon, the presence of the sulfinyl group determines a complete 1,3-induction of the sulfur centre.

Lithium alkyl p -tolylsulfinyl anions generated from 2 or 3 react with methyl 3,3-dimethoxypropanoate ( 1 ) yielding the corresponding β-ketosulfoxides 4 and 5 respectively. The presence of two methoxy groups in the δ-position of these β-ketosulfoxides has little or no influence on the stereoselectivity of DIBAL and DIBAL/ZnX 2 reductions, allowing the synthesis of the title acetals in high diastereoisomeric excess.

The synthesis and chemical characterization of three new transplatinum complexes of structural formula trans-[PtCl(2)(amine)(isopropylamine)] (amine = n,n-dimethylamine, propylamine, and butylamine), 1-3, are described. Cytotoxicity tests in tumor cell lines sensitive to cis-DDP (Jurkat, Hela, and Vero) and also in tumor cell lines overexpressing ras oncogenes and resistant to cis-DDP (HL-60 and Pam 212-ras) show that complexes 1 and 3 have higher cytotoxic activity than cisplatin. Moreover, these two trans-Pt(II) complexes kill Pam 212-ras cells through apoptosis induction. These results suggest that trans-PtCl(2) complexes with asymmetric aliphatic amines may be considered a new class of biologically active trans-platinum drugs.

The role of prolactin in male infertility was studied in 33 patients in whom serum and seminal plasma prolactin levels were determined. With the exception of those patients with Klinefelter's syndrome, infertile males presented moderate hyperprolactinemia as compared with a control group of 34 men. Prolactin levels in seminal plasma were greater than in serum in all patients studied; however, prolactin levels in infertile patients were significantly less than in normal males. Therefore, this situation is the reverse of what happens in serum. Seven patients with idiopathic oligospermia were treated with 5 mg of bromocriptine daily during 6 months, resulting in no measurable effect on the sperm count. Infertility in men may be associated with moderate hyperprolactinemia but bromocriptine is of no therapeutic use. Interpretation of the abnormal levels of prolactin in seminal plasma in oligo- and azoospermic men requires further investigation.
