An analysis of the spatial distribution of the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) values in the upper subsurface horizons of Vertisols made it possible to estimate the degree of sheet erosion on the dissected coastal plain composed of the sodium-bearing montmorillonite clay in Israel. The depth of the appearance of slickensides in the profile of the Vertisols was used as an additional criterion of the disturbance of these soils by erosion. The approximate rates of erosional dissection of the local landscapes after the deposition of montmorillonite clay are discussed.
