Abstract Homogeneous mixed-valence (MV) behaviour is one of the most intriguing phenomena of f-electron systems. Despite extensive efforts, a fundamental aspect which remains unsettled is the experimental determination of the limiting cases for which MV emerges. Here we address this question for SmB6, a prototypical MV system characterized by two nearly-degenerate Sm2+ and Sm3+ configurations. By combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), we track the evolution of the mean Sm valence, v S m , in the Sm x La1−x B6 series. Upon substitution of Sm ions with trivalent La, we observe a linear decrease of valence fluctuations to an almost complete suppression at x = 0.2, with v S m ~ 2; surprisingly, by further reducing x, a re-entrant increase of v S m develops, approaching the value of v i m p ~ 2.35 in the dilute-impurity limit. Such behaviour departs from a monotonic evolution of v S m across the whole series, as well as from the expectation of its convergence to an integer value for x → 0. Our ARPES and XAS results, complemented by a phenomenological model, demonstrate an unconventional evolution of the MV character in the Sm x La1−x B6 series, paving the way to further theoretical and experimental considerations on the concept of MV itself, and its influence on the macroscopic properties of rare-earth compounds in the dilute-to-intermediate impurity regime.

Ocean currents are emerging as key contributors to renewable energy generation. However, technologies for harvesting tidal current energy are still in the early stages of development. In this context, environmental and economic studies on tidal energy converters (TECs) are crucial to further advance tidal technology and facilitate its entry into the market. This article presents a life cycle and economic assessment of a 34.5 MW tidal farm project comprising 23 second-generation tidal devices, each with a rated power of 1.5 MW. The tidal system was simulated using primary data from the full-scale floating platform Atir. The Atir is a pre-commercial tidal device designed with a steel trimaran and a submerged section for TEC installation. An assessment of 18 environmental impact categories was conducted using the ReCiPe 2016 MidPoint method, with process flow systems modelled using SimaPro v9.2.0.1 software. The environmental assessment indicates emissions of 42.11 g CO2eq per kWh, primarily stemming from manufacturing processes that demand substantial amounts of steel. The economic analysis reveals a Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) of 0.125 EUR/kWh, consistent with European Commission projections. Although the platform structure represents a high initial investment, the lower maintenance costs of the Atir device provide long-term savings and, overall, result in a competitive LCOE. The study also introduces a methodological framework for harmonised environmental and economic assessments in tidal energy projects, proving crucial in supporting decision-making processes.

Abstract Post-operative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a debilitating clinical phenomenon in elderly patients. Management of pain in elderly is complicated because analgesic opiates elicit major side effects. In contrast, paracetamol (acetaminophen) has shown analgesic efficacy, no impact on cognition, and its side effects are well tolerated. We investigated the efficacy of paracetamol, compared to the opioid analgesic buprenorphine, in a model of POCD by investigating cognitive decline, allodynia, peripheral and hippocampal cytokines levels, and hippocampal microtubule dynamics as a key modulator of synaptic plasticity. A POCD model was developed in middle-aged (MA) rats by inducing a tibia fracture via orthopaedic surgery. Control MA rats did not undergo any surgery and only received isoflurane anaesthesia. We demonstrated that cognitive decline and increased allodynia following surgery was prevented in paracetamol-treated animals, but not in animals which were exposed to anesthesia alone or underwent the surgery and received buprenorphine. Behavioral alterations were associated with different peripheral cytokine changes between buprenorphine and paracetamol treated animals. Buprenorphine showed no central effects, while paracetamol showed modulatory effects on hippocampal cytokines and markers of microtubule dynamics which were suggestive of neuroprotection. Our data provide the first experimental evidence corroborating the use of paracetamol as first-choice analgesic in POCD.

Abstract We study massless geodesics near the photon-spheres of a large family of solutions of Einstein-Maxwell theory in five dimensions, including BHs, naked singularities and smooth horizon-less JMaRT geometries obtained as six-dimensional uplifts of the five-dimensional solution. We find that a light ring of unstable photon orbits surrounding the mass center is always present, independently of the existence of a horizon or singularity. We compute the Lyapunov exponent, characterizing the chaotic behaviour of geodesics near the ‘photon-sphere’ and the time decay of ring-down modes dominating the response of the geometry to perturbations at late times. We show that, for geometries free of naked singularities, the Lyapunov exponent is always bounded by its value for a Schwarzschild BH of the same mass.

As the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic continues to rage worldwide, the emergence of numerous variants of concern (VOC) represents a challenge for the vaccinal protective efficacy and the reliability of commercially available high-throughput immunoassays. Our study demonstrates the administration of two doses of the BNT162b2 vaccine that elicited a robust SARS-CoV-2-specific immune response which was assessed up to 3 months after full vaccination in a cohort of 37 health care workers (HCWs). SARS-CoV-2-specific antibody response, evaluated by four commercially available chemiluminescence immunoassays (CLIA), was qualitatively consistent with the results provided by the gold-standard in vitro neutralization assay (NTA). However, we could not observe a correlation between the quantity of the antibody detected by CLIA assays and their neutralizing activity tested by NTA. Almost all subjects developed a SARS-CoV-2-specific T-cell response. Moreover, vaccinated HCWs developed a similar protective neutralizing antibodies response against the EU (B.1), Alpha (B.1.1.7), Gamma (P.1), and Eta (B.1.525) SARS-CoV-2 variants, while Beta (B.1.351) and Delta (B.1.617.2) strains displayed a consistent partial immune evasion. These results underline the importance of a solid vaccine-elicited immune response and a robust antibody titre. We believe that these relevant results should be taken into consideration in the definition of future vaccinal strategies.

Introduction: This survey describes Italian RTTs’ involvement and opinions in research activities related to radiation oncology. Primary aim was to assess the degree of involvement of the national RTTs community in research and to describe how RTTs can integrate their skills collaborating with other professionals. Materials and methods: A ten-items multiple-choice questionnaire, with 2–8 possible responses, was developed by a steering committee and generated on a survey platform. Links were sent via email to Italian RTTs.The questions were divided in 3 domains: demographic data; scientific research and activity; opinions about RTTs role in scientific research. The survey started on October 1, 2018 and ended on January 31, 2019. Results: One hundred thirty-five out of 509 (26.5%) RTTs responded to the questionnaire at its expiring date; 97.73% think to be valid contributors in radiation oncology research, expressing clear interest in “data collection” tasks (52.71%); 38.64% feel unsupported by other professionals in the research team and 59.85% of the respondents are not members in any scientific society. Conclusions: The role of Italian RTTs in research is heterogeneous. Mainly RTTs in the age range from 30 to 40 years responded to the survey showing their interest in scientific research. This might be related to different informatics and educational skills as well as to personal attitudes. RTTs particular skills, like data management and technical hypothesis generation abilities, are of benefit to realize research projects. Therefore, engaging RTTs in research activities is strongly suggested.

Abstract We study the scattering of massless probes in the vicinity of the photon-sphere of asymptotically AdS black holes and horizon-free microstate geometries (fuzzballs). We find that these exhibit a chaotic behaviour characterised by exponentially large deviations of nearby trajectories. We compute the Lyapunov exponent λ governing the exponential growth in d dimensions and show that it is bounded from above by λ b = d − 3 / 2 b min $$ {\uplambda}_b=\sqrt{d-3}/2{b}_{\mathrm{min}} $$ where b min is the minimal impact parameter under which a massless particle is swallowed by the black hole or gets trapped in the fuzzball for a very long time. Moreover we observe that λ is typically below the advocated bound on chaos λ H = 2πκ B T ∕ ħ, that in turn characterises the radial fall into the horizon, but the bound is violated in a narrow window near extremality, where the photon-sphere coalesces with the horizon. Finally, we find that fuzzballs are characterised by Lyapunov exponents smaller than those of the corresponding BH’s suggesting the possibility of discriminating the existence of micro-structures at horizon scales via the detection of ring-down modes with time scales λ −1 longer than those expected for a BH of the given mass and spin.

Abstract Hidden theories coupled to the SM may provide emergent axions, that are composites/bound-states of the hidden fields. This is motivated by paradigms emerging from the AdS/CFT correspondence but it is a more general phenomenon. We explore the general setup and find that UV-sourced interactions of instanton densities give rise to emergent axions in the IR. We study the general properties of such axions and argue that they are generically different from both fundamental and composite axions that have been studied so far.

This paper focuses on the implementation of new techniques for bathymetric inspections. The scope is the exploitation of sensors, usually and commonly used for navigation, namely the altimeter and the Forward Looking Sonar (FLS), for identifying objects which are laying on the sea floor. In this particular framework, the low spatial resolution and coverage of these sensors have been enhanced through the application of classical computational geometry. The altimeter and the FLS are part of the most common underwater navigation systems, and they are vastly mounted on Autonomous Underwater Vehicles. Although they are not designed for this kind of accurate measurements and for 3D spatial reconstruction, they are quite cost-effective if compared with standard multibeam acoustic systems. Developing a technique for exploiting such an affordable low cost and widely used sensor will empower the Cultural Heritage community of users, giving a feasible opportunity to perform effective archaeological campaigns also within small funded projects.

Abstract Black holes absorb any particle impinging with an impact parameter below a critical value. We show that 2- and 3-charge fuzzball geometries exhibit a similar trapping behaviour for a selected choice of the impact parameter of incoming massless particles. This suggests that the blackness property of black holes arises as a collective effect whereby each micro-state absorbs a specific channel.

We identify string corrections to the EM memory effect. Though largely negligible in the low-energy limit, the effect become relevant in high-energy collisions and in extreme events. We illustrate our findings in a simple unoriented bosonic string model. Thanks to the coherent effect of the infinite tower of open string resonances, the corrections are non-perturbative in α′, modulated in retarded time and slowly decaying even at large distances from the source. Remarkably compact expressions obtain for special choices of the kinematics in tree-level 4-point amplitudes. We discuss further corrections occurring at higher-points and the exponential damping resulting from broadening and shifting of the massive poles due to loops. Finally we estimate the range of the parameters and masses for detectability in semi-realistic (Type I) contexts and propose a rationale for this string memory effect.

Abstract We construct explicit examples of microstate geometries of four-dimensional black holes that lift to smooth horizon-free geometries in five dimensions. Solutions consist of half-BPS D-brane atoms distributed in ℝ 3 $$ {\mathbb{R}}^3 $$ . Charges and positions of the D-brane centers are constrained by the bubble equations and boundary conditions ensuring the regularity of the metric and the match with the black hole geometry. In the case of three centers, we find that the moduli spaces of solutions includes disjoint one-dimensional components of (generically) finite volume.

In the context of increasing energy consumption, multi-generation systems such as combined heat and power generation (CHP) are attractive to meet the increasingly stringent requirements regarding energy saving in buildings. Hospitals are great consumers of energy, both electrical and thermal: the use of heating and cooling equipment for maintaining satisfactory comfort and indoor air quality for the patients as well as the adoption of several electrical health equipment result in the highest energy consumption per unit floor area of the entire building sector.In the present study, co/tri-generation systems’ optimal set-up, size and operation are investigated for small/medium size hospital facilities. More specifically, after the presentation of the energy consumption profiles for a medium size hospital with 600 beds, set as reference case for this study, a parametric analysis has been carried out varying the peak loads of the user. For each of the proposed scenarios, the optimal plant configuration (sizing of all the energy production systems) has been outlined by means of a numerical code (Trigen 3.0) in-house developed. Afterwards, in order to optimize the load distribution in a smart grid characterized by electrical, thermal, cooling and fuel energy fluxes, an ulterior numerical investigation has been performed. The software, named EGO (Energy Grids Optimizer) consists of a genetic algorithm procedure: it defines the optimal load distribution of a number of energy systems operating into a smart grid based on the minimization of an objective function which expresses the total cost of energy production. Finally, an economic analysis has been carried out in order to evaluate the profitability of the proposed CHP-heat pump scenario. We extend our analysis of the soft behavior of string amplitudes with massive insertions to closed strings at tree level (sphere). Relying on our previous results for open strings on the disk and on KLT formulae we check universality of the soft behavior for gravitons to sub-leading order for superstring amplitudes and show how this gets modified for bosonic strings. At sub-sub-leading order we argue in favor of universality for superstrings on the basis of OPE of the vertex operators and gauge invariance for the soft graviton. The results are illustrated by explicit examples of 4-point amplitudes with one massive insertion in any dimension, including D=4, where use of the helicity spinor formalism drastically simplifies the expressions. As a by-product of our analysis we confirm that the ‘single valued projection’ holds for massive amplitudes, too. We briefly comment on the soft behavior of the anti-symmetric tensor and on loop corrections.

An impaired expression of interferon-α regulated genes has been reported in patients with either systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or Aicardi-Goutières syndrome (AGS), a rare monogenic encephalopathy with onset in infancy. One of mutations causing AGS is located in the TREX1 gene on chromosome 3. Heterozygous mutations in TREX1 were reported in SLE patients. TREX1 is a DNA exonuclease with specificity for ssDNA. An impairment of its activity may result in the accumulation of nucleid acid. A recent study described a significant association between a haplotype including several common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of TREX1 and neurological manifestations in European SLE patients. Fifty-one SLE patients were screened for TREX1 gene, and the corresponding data were collected from clinical charts. A novel heterozygous variant (p.Asp130Asn) was identified in one patient and in none of 150 controls. A missense variation was located in one of the three active sites of the gene and was classified as probably damaging. Variations of SNP rs11797 were detected in 33 SLE patients and a variation of rs3135944 in one. A significantly higher rate of the minor allele (T nucleotide) of SNP rs11797 was found in SLE patients with neuropsychiatric manifestations [12/16 (75%) vs 28/86 (32.5%) O=0.002, odds ratio=6.42 95% confidence interval (1.7-26.2)]. Only 1 out of 8 patients (12.5%) with neuropsychiatric SLE carried the wild-type form in homozygosity. Although we analyzed a small number of patients, we found a novel variation of TREX1, which may be pathogenic. The polymorphism of rs11797 was more frequent in SLE patients with neurological manifestations.

The Himalaya and the Tibetan Plateau are uplifted by the ongoing northward underthrusting of the Indian continental lithosphere below Tibet resulting in lithospheric stacking. The layered structure of the Tibetan upper mantle is imaged by seismic methods, most detailed with the receiver function method. Tibet is considered as a place where the development of a future craton is currently under way. Here we study the upper mantle from Germany to northern Sweden with seismic S receiver functions and compare the structure below Scandinavia with that below Tibet. Below Proterozoic Scandinavia, we found two low‐velocity zones on top of each other, separated by a high‐velocity zone. The top of the upper low‐velocity zone at about 100 km depth extends from Germany to Archaean northern Sweden. It agrees with the lithosphere‐asthenosphere boundary (LAB) below Germany and Denmark. Below Sweden it is known as the 8°discontinuity, or as a mid‐lithospheric discontinuity (MLD), similar to observations in North America. Seismic tomography places the LAB near 200 km in Scandinavia, which is close to the top of our deeper low‐velocity zone. We also observed the bottom of the asthenosphere (the Lehmann discontinuity) deepening from 180 km in Germany to 260 km below Sweden. Remnants of old subduction in the upper about 100 km below Scandinavia and Finland are known from controlled source seismic experiments and local earthquake studies. Recent tomographic studies indicate delamination of the lithosphere below southern Scandinavia and northern Germany. We are suggesting that the large‐scale layered structure in the Scandinavian upper mantle may be caused by processes similar to the ongoing lithospheric stacking in Tibet.

O objetivo deste artigo é relatar um caso de orquiepididimite associado com infecção por Salmonella enterica subespécie diarizonae em carneiro da raça Santa Inês de quatro anos de idade, vasectomizado. Ao exame clínico reprodutivo, o animal mostrou aumento severo do conteúdo escrotal, sendo o testículo direito maior do que o esquerdo e a cauda do epidídimo direita maior do que a esquerda. A consistência testicular, avaliada em escala de 1 a 5, foi 5 para o testículo direito e 2,5 para o esquerdo; o órgão apresentava-se muito sensível ao toque. Na ultrassonografia foram observadas estruturas anecoicas/hipoecoicas circulares na cauda do epidídimo, sugestivas de abscessos; alguns pontos hiperecogênicos no parênquima testicular, sugerindo lesões de calcificação; e todo o testículo direito rodeado por imagem hipoecoica, indicativa de edema. Uma das estruturas da cauda do epidídimo direita foi puncionada, encontrando-se exsudato purulento, o qual foi enviado para exame microbiológico, sendo isolada e identificada Salmonella enterica subespécie diarizonae. O carneiro foi submetido a orquiepididectomia, e o órgão foi caracterizado macroscopicamente por adesões fibrosas entre as camadas escrotais, coexistência de abscessos epididimários e degeneração testicular. A Salmonella enterica subespécie diarizonae deve ser considerada no diagnóstico diferencial de infecção genital em ovinos.

La estabilidad de Mezclas de Nutrición Parenteral Extemporáneas (MNPE) es un aspecto fundamental de estas formulaciones, con impacto en la seguridad del paciente y la calidad de la atención. En emulsiones lipídicas, un criterio para determinar su estabilidad física es en base al incremento del número de glóbulos lipídicos de diámetro mayor a 500 nm, generados por coalescencia de glóbulos de pequeño tamaño en el tiempo. Objetivos: Determinar tamaño medio de los glóbulos lipídicos que componen la fase interna en emulsiones de MNPE, a los fines de evaluar su estabilidad y poder establecer el tiempo de vida útil de las mismas. Evaluar perfil de distribución de tamaños de dichos glóbulos en la mezcla y compararlo con el de la emulsión lipídica base. Método: Análisis del tamaño de glóbulo lipídico mediante técnica de dispersión dinámica de la luz en una fórmula neonatológica de uso frecuente, almacenada en diferentes períodos de tiempos y temperaturas. Resultados: En ninguna de las muestras analizadas el diámetro medio de los glóbulos lipídicos de la MNPE supera el límite recomendado en bibliografía de referencia. El tamaño medio de los glóbulos lipídicos y su distribución en la emulsión base no manifiesta cambios significativos al formular la MNPE. Discusión: Los datos obtenidos permiten considerar que la MNPE evaluada poseería una estabilidad mayor al período de vida útil asignado hasta el momento por el Laboratorio productor. Profundizar investigación con otras formulaciones de MNPE para optimizar estimaciones de límites de vida útil de este tipo de emulsiones.Stability of extemporaneous parenteral nutrition is a critical aspect of these formulations, with impact in patient safety and quality of service. In lipid emulsions physical stability can be assessed by the increase in the number of lipid globules of size superior than 500 nm, generated by coalescence of small globules during time. Objectives: to determine medium size of the lipid globules that compose the internal phase of TNA, in order to evaluate its stability and establish beyond-use date of the parenteral nutrition. To evaluate distribution profile of the lipid globules in the parenteral nutrition and compare it with this of the lipid emulsion used as raw material. Method: globule size assessment by dynamic light scattering in a paediatric extemporaneous parenteral nutrition formula of frequent use, stored in different periods of time and temperatures. Results: medium globule size of the parenteral nutrition analyzed samples did not exceed the limit recommended by literature. Medium size and distribution of the lipid globules in the original lipid emulsion did not have significative changes after the compounding of the parenteral nutrition. Discussion: obtained data allow to consider that the extemporaneous parenteral nutrition evaluated would have a beyond-use date superior than the one now in use. This research must be deepened by the study of other formulas of parenteral nutrition in order to optimize the setting of beyond-use date.

The characteristics of meat quality, chemical and fatty acid composition, from fast-growing (FG) and medium-growing (MG) meat-type and slow-growing (SG) egg-type chickens reared under organic conditions were compared. Three-hundred and sixty 1-day-old male chicks, equally divided into three experimental groups represented by strains (FG: Cobb 700, MG: Naked neck Kabir and SG: Brown Classic Lohman) were housed into three poultry houses with outdoor pasture availability of 10 m2/bird located in the same Research Centre of the University of Perugia. All the birds were fed ad libitum the same diets formulated according to the European Union (EU) Regulations by using organic raw materials. Birds from the FG and MG groups were raised until 81 days, whereas birds from the SG group were raised until 96 days in order to achieve an acceptable market live weight. SG birds showed significantly (P < 0.01) higher breast meat drip and cook losses, Allo-Kramer shear values and collagen content. In comparison with FG and SG, MG exhibited a higher breast meat pH (5.86% v. 5.79% and 5.78%, respectively; P < 0.01) and a lower lightness (54.88% v. 57.81% and 56.98%, respectively; P < 0.05). Genotype dramatically affected the lipid content as well as the fatty acid composition of both breast and thigh meat. SG exhibited the lowest content of lipid, both in breast and in thigh meat, the lowest proportions of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and the highest proportions of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). The total n-3 PUFA of SG breast meat was double that of FG meat and intermediate with respect to MG birds (8.07% v. 4.07% v. 5.14% total fatty acids; P < 0.01). The fatty acid composition of thigh meat is similar to that of breast meat, but the differences among genotypes are less pronounced. Total saturated fatty acids were not affected by the genotype. In conclusion, meat functional properties of FG and MG strains appeared much more attractive both for industry and consumer (lower drip and cook losses and higher tenderness), whereas from a nutritional point of view, meat from SG appeared healthier (less fat and higher content of n-3 PUFA) and thus might better fit with the consumer’s expectations of organic products.

A study was conducted to compare Allo-Kramer (AK) and Warner-Bratzler (WB) devices to evaluate rabbit meat texture and to assess their correlations with sensory tenderness. Meat samples characterized by a wide range of tenderness were prepared by boning longissimus lumborum muscles from 90 carcasses at different post mortem times (1, 3, 24h). The right loin of each carcass was used for WB and AK tests, whereas the left loin to assess sensory tenderness and juiciness. The sensory test indicated a higher tenderness and juiciness of rabbit meat obtained from carcasses boned at 24h post mortem in comparison with 1 and 3h post mortem. Both AK and WB methods were able to detect these differences. After transportation, the birds are unloaded in a holding area and subjected to a variable lairage time till the moment of slaughter. Major problems associated with ante mortem factors have been associated with mortality (birds that died between catching and the moment of slaughter or “dead on arrival”, DOA), live weight loss as well as carcass defects (haemorrhages, bruises and broken bones) and meat quality attributes such as colour, texture, and functional properties (Fletcher, 1991; Petracci et al., 2001; Barbut, 2002; Nijdam et al., 2004). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of transport and lairage times on mortality, live weight loss and carcass quality in broiler chickens.

Alpine breeding systems are an example of sustainable integration between land management and productive processes; the inherent forage exploitation has characterized and modified landscape and environment. Moreover, alpine pasture has increased its importance for the multifunctional features attributed in the recent years to mountain productive activities (Agabriel et al., 2001).

Since the 1970s it has been well known that, though water for human consumption is generally disinfected before being distributed along the network, the use of chemicals results in the formation of many different Disinfection By-Products (DBPs). In the case of chlorine dioxide, the most important and represented DBPs are chlorite and chlorate: after an introduction concerning the current Italian regulation on this subject, in the experimental part the results of a 7-year minitoring campaign, concerning water of different origin collected from taps in various Italian regions, are shown. The analytical technique used for the determination of chlorite and chlorate was Ion Chromatography. The result obtained are finally discussed.

Serum samples from 242 HIV-positive persons were studied for the detection of capsular polysaccha-ride antigen of Cryptococcus neoformans; 193 of these patients presented less than 300 CD4+ cells/µl of blood and 49 patients had more than 300 CD4+ cells/µl. None of them had symptoms or signs characteristic of cryptococcosis. The capsular antigen of C. neofarmans was detected by latex agglutination technique with pronase pre-treatment (IMMY, Crypto-Latex Antigen Detection System, Immunomycologics Inc., OK, USA); in 61% of the samples, ELISA technique was also used (Premier, Cryptococcal Antigen, Meridian Diagnostic Inc., Cincinatti, Oh, USA). The comparative study of both methods showed that the results obtained were similar in 96.9% of the cases. The capsular antigen was detected in 13 out of 193 (6.7%) patients with less than 300 CD4+ cells/µl. Cryptococcosis was confirmed mycologically in 3 of these 13 cases (23%) by the isolation of C. neoformans in CSF or blood cultures. Three patients, who had presented negative results of both tests for capsular antigen, suffered disseminated cryptococcosis 4 to 8 months later. The predictive diagnostic value of capsular antigen detection of C. neoformans seems tobe low and we believe that it should not be done routinely in asymptomatic HIV-positive persons.Fueron examinadas las muestras de suero de 242 personas, HIV positivas, para determinar la presencia de antígeno capsular del C. neoformans, 193 de estos pacientes tenían recuentos de células CD4 + inferiores a los 300/µl y 49 pacientes presentaron recuentos superiores a este límite. Ninguno de los enfermos tenía sintomatología que hiciese sospechar criptococosis. El antígeno capsular del C. neoformans fue determinado por una técnica de aglutinación de partículas de látex previo tratamiento con pronasa (IMM, latex-Crypto antigen detection system, Immunomycologics, Oh, USA) y 61% de las muestras fueron también examinadas mediante la técnica de ELISA (Premier, Cryptococcal Antigen, Medirian Diagnostic Inc, Cincinatti, OH, USA). Los resultados de ambas técnicas fueron coincidentes en 96.9% de los casos. Pudo comprobarse la presencia de antígeno capsular del C. neoformans en 13 casos entre los 193 pacientes HIV positivos, con recuentos de células CD4+ menores de 300/µl (6.7%), ningún paciente con recuentos superiores a este límite presentó antigenemia positiva. En 3/13 enfermos (23%) pudo confirmarse el diagnóstico de criptococcosis mediante el aislamiento del C. neoformans en LCR o hemocultivos. Tres pacientes que habían presentado antigenemias negativas sufrieron 4 a 8 meses después, criptococosis diseminada. Se considera que el valor diagnóstico predictivo de la detección de antígeno capsular del C. neoformans es bajo y que la realización sistemática de esta reacción no se justifica.

Last instar larva and pupa of Paramallocera hirta Kirby, 1818 are described and illustrated based on specimens reared in the laboratory from neonate larvae on Eucalyptus globulus ssp. globulus logs and on an artificial diet. Characteristics of possible diagnostic value are also presented in this paper.

The description of the last instar larva and pupa of Phoracantha recurva Newman, 1842 and the redescription of the immature stages of Phoracantha semipunctata Fabricius, 1775 showing new characters of possible diagnostic value are presented in this work. A key of identification of both species based on these characters is also given.
