Abstract

NASA’S Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft recently arrived at the near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu, a primitive body that represents the objects that may have brought prebiotic molecules and volatiles such as water to Earth1. Bennu is a low-albedo B-type asteroid2 that has been linked to organic-rich hydrated carbonaceous chondrites3. Such meteorites are altered by ejection from their parent body and contaminated by atmospheric entry and terrestrial microbes. Therefore, the primary mission objective is to return a sample of Bennu to Earth that is pristine—that is, not affected by these processes4. The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft carries a sophisticated suite of instruments to characterize Bennu’s global properties, support the selection of a sampling site and document that site at a sub-centimetre scale5,6,7,8,9,10,11. Here we consider early OSIRIS-REx observations of Bennu to understand how the asteroid’s properties compare to pre-encounter expectations and to assess the prospects for sample return. The bulk composition of Bennu appears to be hydrated and volatile-rich, as expected. However, in contrast to pre-encounter modelling of Bennu’s thermal inertia12 and radar polarization ratios13—which indicated a generally smooth surface covered by centimetre-scale particles—resolved imaging reveals an unexpected surficial diversity. The albedo, texture, particle size and roughness are beyond the spacecraft design specifications. On the basis of our pre-encounter knowledge, we developed a sampling strategy to target 50-metre-diameter patches of loose regolith with grain sizes smaller than two centimetres4. We observe only a small number of apparently hazard-free regions, of the order of 5 to 20 metres in extent, the sampling of which poses a substantial challenge to mission success.

Abstract

During its approach to asteroid (101955) Bennu, NASA’s Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft surveyed Bennu’s immediate environment, photometric properties, and rotation state. Discovery of a dusty environment, a natural satellite, or unexpected asteroid characteristics would have had consequences for the mission’s safety and observation strategy. Here we show that spacecraft observations during this period were highly sensitive to satellites (sub-meter scale) but reveal none, although later navigational images indicate that further investigation is needed. We constrain average dust production in September 2018 from Bennu’s surface to an upper limit of 150 g/s averaged over 34 min. Bennu’s disk-integrated photometric phase function validates measurements from the pre-encounter astronomical campaign. We demonstrate that Bennu’s rotation rate is accelerating continuously at 3.63 ± 0.52 × 10^(–6) degrees/sq. day, likely due to the Yarkovsky–O’Keefe–Radzievskii–Paddack (YORP) effect, with evolutionary implications.

Abstract

The REgolith X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (REXIS) instrument on board NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission to the asteroid Bennu is a Class-D student collaboration experiment designed to detect fluoresced X-rays from the asteroid's surface to measure elemental abundances. In July and November 2019 REXIS collected ~615 hours of integrated exposure time of Bennu's sun-illuminated surface from terminator orbits. As reported in Hoak et al. (2021), the REXIS data do not contain a clear signal of X-ray fluorescence from the asteroid, in part due to the low incident solar X-ray flux during periods of observation. To support the evaluation of the upper limits on the detectable X-ray signal that may provide insights for the properties of Bennu's regolith, we present an overview of the REXIS instrument, its operation, and details of its in-flight calibration on astrophysical X-ray sources. This calibration includes the serendipitous detection of the transient X-ray binary MAXI J0637-430 during Bennu observations, demonstrating the operational success of REXIS at the asteroid. Abstract

The Regolith X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (REXIS) is the student collaboration experiment proposed and built by an MIT-Harvard team, launched aboard NASA’s OSIRIS-REx asteroid sample return mission. REXIS complements the scientific investigations of other OSIRIS-REx instruments by determining the relative abundances of key elements present on the asteroid’s surface by measuring the X-ray fluorescence spectrum (stimulated by the natural solar X-ray flux) over the range of energies 0.5 to 7 keV. REXIS consists of two components: a main imaging spectrometer with a coded aperture mask and a separate solar X-ray monitor to account for the Sun’s variability. In addition to element abundance ratios (relative to Si) pinpointing the asteroid’s most likely meteorite association, REXIS also maps elemental abundance variability across the asteroid’s surface using the asteroid’s rotation as well as the spacecraft’s orbital motion. Image reconstruction at the highest resolution is facilitated by the coded aperture mask. Through this operation, REXIS will be the first application of X-ray coded aperture imaging to planetary surface mapping, making this student-built instrument a pathfinder toward future planetary exploration. To date, 60 students at the undergraduate and graduate levels have been involved with the REXIS project, with the hands-on experience translating to a dozen Master’s and Ph.D. theses and other student publications.

8. Global cloud cover for assessment of optical satellite observation opportunities: A HyspIRI case study

Abstract

The number of cloud-free views by Earth-orbiting optical remote sensing instruments must be characterized to verify that the coverage is sufficient to address a mission's science objectives. This study determines the expected cloud-free coverage for the Hyperspectral Infra-red Imager (HyspIRI) mission concept using the Terra MODIS 5 km daytime cloud mask dataset covering the period 2001–2010. The HyspIRI mission concept has two instruments: a Visible Shortwave Infrared (VSWIR) imaging spectrometer and a Thermal Infrared (TIR) multispectral imager. The VSWIR and TIR instruments have equatorial revisit times of 19 and 5 days, respectively. Using the MODIS cloud mask data, we determined the percentage of the Earth's land and shallow water regions that would have been viewable with cloud-free acquisitions for each quarter and year in 2001 through 2010. For the VSWIR, the average cloud-free coverage was 83.0% quarterly and 99.6% annually. Average TIR monthly coverage was also evaluated to be 90.7%. The standard deviations for these statistics were all less than 1.2%, and the average coverages exceed HyspIRI's quarterly and annual requirements (listed in Table 6) by over twenty standard deviations. By the central limit theorem, it follows that in a typical year, HyspIRI will meet its coverage requirements (listed in Table 6) with extremely low uncertainty, acquiring a sufficient number of scenes to enable both monthly and quarterly assessments of the vast majority of the Earth's land and shallow water. This paper includes: yearly global statistics for cloud-free MODIS observations at 5 km resolution between 2001 and 2010; a one year global map representing percent cloud-free observations between 2001 and 2010; global maps representing percent cloud-free observations between 2001 and 2010 for each quarter; maps of the predicted number of views by each HyspIRI instrument quarterly and over the course of a year; and predicted global coverage quarterly and for one year for each HyspIRI instrument, with additional monthly statistics for TIR.

Abstract

Multidisciplinary system design optimization is performed to determine an optimal on-orbit satellite assembly mission architecture. Modern satellite assembly and launch systems rely on monolithic launches of complete satellites. There are many benefits, however, that may be attained through deviating from the status quo. Launching robotic, on-orbit assemble-able satellite modules increases the number of launches, but since each is launch is of a smaller satellite, the net launch costs can be decreased. Additionally, the price per pound of satellite launches can be decreased through ride-share programs with other missions. Spacecraft versatility is increased when not restricted to the selected launch vehicle payload weight capacity and geometric envelope by instead relying on reconfiguration once in orbit to achieve a final operational configuration. To facilitate the realization of these and other benefits, this paper addresses the architecture of an on-orbit assembly mission that requires an assembly satellite(s) to rendezvous with customer modules and assemble them into a complete satellite in the desired final orbit. A model of this assembly mission is created which calculates costs over the whole multi-assembly mission lifetime of one through five assembler satellites and the downtime which customer satellites experience while on orbit waiting for assembly to be complete. Five design variables are identified for this model, namely, the number of assembler satellites, the number of modules each assembler can manipulate at once, the starting location of each assembler, the autonomy level of the assemblers, and type of transfer orbits utilized by the assemblers. By varying these five aspects of the mission, an optimization is carried out which seeks to minimize total cost of the assembler mission and downtime of the customer satellites while holding to certain parameters and meeting constraints. This paper presents the problem, a simulation of the problem, the optimization methodology, and the results of that optimization.

OSIRIS-REx is a NASA New Frontiers mission scheduled for launch in 2016 that will travel to the asteroid Bennu and return a pristine sample of the asteroid to Earth. The REgolith X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (REXIS) is a student collaboration instrument on-board the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft. REXIS is a NASA risk Class D instrument, and its design and development is largely student led. The engineering team consists of MIT graduate and undergraduate students and staff at the MIT Space Systems Laboratory. The primary goal of REXIS is the education of science and engineering students through participation in the development of light hardware. In light, REXIS will contribute to the mission by providing an elemental abundance map of the asteroid and by characterizing Bennu among the known meteorite groups. REXIS is sensitive to X-rays between 0.5 and 7 keV, and uses coded aperture imaging to map the distribution of iron with 50 m spatial resolution. This paper describes the science goals, concept of operations, and overall engineering design of the REXIS instrument. Each subsystem of the instrument is addressed with a high-level description of the design. Critical design elements such as the Thermal Isolation Layer (TIL), radiation cover, coded-aperture mask, and Detector Assembly Mount (DAM) are discussed in further detail.

The OSIRIS-REx Mission was selected under the NASA New Frontiers program and is scheduled for launch in September of 2016 for a rendezvous with, and collection of a sample from the surface of asteroid Bennu in 2019. 101955 Bennu (previously 1999 RQ36) is an Apollo (near-Earth) asteroid originally discovered by the LINEAR project in 1999 which has since been classified as a potentially hazardous near-Earth object. The REgolith X-Ray Imaging Spectrometer (REXIS) was proposed jointly by MIT and Harvard and was subsequently accepted as a student led instrument for the determination of the elemental composition of the asteroid's surface as well as the surface distribution of select elements through solar induced X-ray fluorescence. REXIS consists of a detector plane that contains 4 X-ray CCDs integrated into a wide field coded aperture telescope with a focal length of 20 cm for the detection of regions with enhanced abundance in key elements at 50 m scales. Elemental surface distributions of approximately 50-200 m scales can be detected using the instrument as a simple collimator. Abstract

Cloud cover has an overall negative impact on hyperspectral and multispectral Earth observing sensors; the Hyperspectral Infrared Imaging or HyspIRI mission carries such instruments. A key feature of HyspIRI is its ability to revisit the same point on the equator every 19 days. This allows for better knowledge of the planet's seasonal ecosystem changes. Understanding the likelihood and frequency in which clouds will cover the scenes imaged is necessary to better quantify the science return of HyspIRI and other related missions. Current cloud prediction models are too conservative and only sample small time frames of the available satellite data. This results in a low degree of accuracy with respect to cloud-sensor obscuration and predicts far less of a science return than actual. This study uses a 2007–2009 data set from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) on-board the Terra satellite to produce a more accurate prediction of the effects cloud cover has on HyspIRI. The NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center developed Giovanni application was used to extract MODIS data at one-degree spatial resolution. This data created a monthly cloud mask that was averaged into three month blocks to represent seasons. Results show the seasonal data collection probability for HyspIRI's Visual Shortwave Infrared Imaging Spectrometer.
