Abstract

Context.The Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) is part of the remote sensing instrument package of the ESA/NASA Solar Orbiter mission that will explore the inner heliosphere and observe the Sun from vantage points close to the Sun and out of the ecliptic. Solar Orbiter will advance the “connection science” between solar activity and the heliosphere.Aims.With EUI we aim to improve our understanding of the structure and dynamics of the solar atmosphere, globally as well as at high resolution, and from high solar latitude perspectives.Methods.The EUI consists of three telescopes, the Full Sun Imager and two High Resolution Imagers, which are optimised to image in Lyman-αand EUV (17.4 nm, 30.4 nm) to provide a coverage from chromosphere up to corona. The EUI is designed to cope with the strong constraints imposed by the Solar Orbiter mission characteristics. Limited telemetry availability is compensated by state-of-the-art image compression, onboard image processing, and event selection. The imposed power limitations and potentially harsh radiation environment necessitate the use of novel CMOS sensors. As the unobstructed field of view of the telescopes needs to protrude through the spacecraft’s heat shield, the apertures have been kept as small as possible, without compromising optical performance. This led to a systematic effort to optimise the throughput of every optical element and the reduction of noise levels in the sensor.Results.In this paper we review the design of the two elements of the EUI instrument: the Optical Bench System and the Common Electronic Box. Particular attention is also given to the onboard software, the intended operations, the ground software, and the foreseen data products.Conclusions.The EUI will bring unique science opportunities thanks to its specific design, its viewpoint, and to the planned synergies with the other Solar Orbiter instruments. In particular, we highlight science opportunities brought by the out-of-ecliptic vantage point of the solar poles, the high-resolution imaging of the high chromosphere and corona, and the connection to the outer corona as observed by coronagraphs.

Abstract

The occurrence and distribution of methionine- and leucine-enkephalin-like immunoreactivity were investigated in the cat coeliac ganglion using either the indirect imimmoperoxidase method or the peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique. Several antisera raised to methionine- and leucine-enkephalin were used. Their specificity was assessed by incubating sections of the coeliac ganglion with increasing dilutions of antisera and with antisera saturated with their respective antigen. The present study was performed both in untreated and in colchicine-treated cats. Immunoreactive methionine- and leucine-enkephalin-like cell bodies were only visualized in colchicine-treated cats. Two types of labeled cells were observed. The first type had a size similar to that of unlabeled principal ganglion cells. These labeled cells were numerous and scattered throughout the ganglion; they probably represented enkephalin-containing ganglion cells. The second type of immunoreactive cells were of a much smaller size. They were always gathered in small clusters of about 5–15 cells and were not numerous; they presumably represented enkephalin-containing small intensely fluorescent cells. Immunoreactive nerve fibres were mainly observed in untreated cats and accessorily in colchicine-treated cats. In untreated animals dense networks of methionine- and leucine-enkephalin-like immunoreactive fibres were found in the coeliac ganglion. These fibres had numerous varicosities which often closely surrounded unlabeled principal ganglion cells. In colchicine-treated cats some immunoreactive fibres surrounded labeled principal ganglion cell bodies. The present results establish for the first time the presence of enkephalin-like immunoreactive principal ganglion cells in a mammalian sympathetic prevertebral ganglion. The presence of enkephalin-containing principal ganglion cells, small intensely fluorescent cells and nerve terminals, supports an important role of enkephalins in the integrative synaptic activities of cat coeliac ganglion cells.

Abstract

The number and caliber of myelinated and non-myelinated fibers of entire and sensory vagal nerves of cats were studied by means of light and electron microscopy. The results obtained with electron microscopy show that the non-myelinated component is particularly rich (about 40,000 elements at the cervical level), with clearly higher numbers of fibers than demonstrated thus far with light microscopy. The ratio of myelinated to non-myelinated fibers is on the average 1∶ 4 for the total vagi and only 1∶ 8 for the sensory vagal component. The comparison of the nerve above and below the level of the nodose ganglion shows that (1) mean fiber diameter is usually greater at the infranodose than at the supranodose level, and (2) some myelinated fibers of small diameter occurring below the nodose ganglion become non-myelinated above it. Additionally, the number of non-myelinated fibers per Schwann cell is greater at the supranodose than at the infranodose level; this speaks in favor of a reorganization of the C-fiber population from one level to the other.

9. Calibration of MAJIS (Moons And Jupiter Imaging Spectrometer). I. On-ground setup description and characterization.

Abstract

The visible and infrared Moon And Jupiter Imaging Spectrometer (MAJIS), aboard the JUpiter ICy Moons Explorer (JUICE) spacecraft, will characterize the composition of the surfaces and atmospheres of the Jupiter system. Prior to the launch, a campaign was carried out to obtain the measurements needed to calibrate the instrument. The aim was not only to produce data for the calculation of the radiometric, spectral, and spatial transfer functions but also to evaluate MAJIS performance, such as signal-to-noise ratio and amount of straylight, under near-flight conditions. Here, we first describe the setup implemented to obtain these measurements, based on five optical channels. We notably emphasize the concepts used to mitigate thermal infrared emissions generated at ambient temperatures, since the MAJIS spectral range extends up to 5.6 µm. Then, we characterize the performance of the setup by detailing the validation measurements obtained before the campaign. In particular, the radiometric, geometric, and spectral properties of the setup needed for the inversion of collected data and the calculation of the instrument's calibration functions are presented and discussed. Finally, we provide an overview of conducted measurements with MAJIS, and we discuss unforeseen events encountered during the on-ground calibration campaign., (© 2024 Author(s). Abstract

This is the first quantitative electron microscopic study of anterior ethmoidal nerve in adult and newborn cats. The adult nerve comprises about 1,000 myelinated fibers including A delta (65%) and A beta (35%) fibers and 6,000 unmyelinated fibers. At birth, only 27% of the adult myelinated fibers complement is already present. The immaturity of the nerve is discussed in relation to that of the sneeze reflex.

Abstract

Wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase conjugate (WGA-HRP) injected into the nodose ganglion was anterogradely transported into the vagal sensory terminal fibers that were further visualized in the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) of the cat. The distribution pattern of the labeled fibers in the LES wall was investigated. All the labeled fibers came from the serosa and penetrated between the bundles of longitudinal muscle fibers. Then the labeled fibers took two different pathways: they either ran, and probably ended, between the longitudinal and circular muscle layers, or they ran directly from the longitudinal to the circular muscle layer. Between the longitudinal and circular muscle layers, they followed a sinuous pathway. In contrast, when they crossed the circular muscle layer toward the mucosa, they ran perpendicular to the orientation of the muscle fibers. After having entered the mucosa, they became twisted and penetrated deeply into the epithelium. These two populations of vagal sensory labeled fibers might correspond respectively to the muscular and mucosal receptors classically described in previous electrophysiological studies.
