Abstract: A growing literature shows an improvement of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related depression after successful treatment with direct-acting antivirals. However, depression after HCV cure remains insufficiently documented in people living with HIV (PLWH) and HCV, a population with specific mental health challenges. This study aimed to (i) document the prevalence of moderate-to-severe depression (PHQ-9 score ≥10) across different age classes in HCV-cured PLWH; (ii) identify associated socio-behavioral correlates.Descriptive analyses were performed on data collected during a cross-sectional survey (February 2018 - May 2019) nested in a prospective, multicenter cohort of individuals living with HIV and HCV (ANRS CO13 HEPAVIH). Socio-behavioral correlates of moderate-to-severe depression were identified using logistic regression.Among the 398 HCV-cured individuals in the study sample (median age [IQR]: 56 [53-59] years; 73.1% men), 23.9% presented with moderate-to-severe depression (PHQ-9 score ≥10). Depressive symptom prevalence rates were as follows: anhedonia: 52.3%; feeling 'down' or feelings of hopelessness: 48.3%; sleeping problems: 65.7%; lack of energy: 70.3%; eating disorders: 51.2%; lack of self-esteem: 34.3%; difficulty concentrating: 34.9%; sluggishness (in movement and voice) or restlessness: 24.6%; suicidal ideation: 17.1%. No significant difference was detected across age classes. Female sex, unhealthy alcohol use, sedentary lifestyle, and unhealthy eating behaviors were associated with increased odds of moderate-to-severe depression.Depressive symptoms were common in this sample of HCV-cured PLWH. Unlike findings for the French general population, the prevalence of depression did not decrease with age class. Mental health remains a key issue for HIV-HCV-coinfected individuals, even after HCV cure, especially in women and in individuals with unhealthy behaviors.Despite potential improvements in mental health after successful treatment with direct-acting antivirals, many people living with HIV (PLWH) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) - even in older age classes - still face depressive symptoms after HCV cure. In this population, women and people reporting unhealthy alcohol use, sedentary lifestyle, or unhealthy eating behaviors are more prone to report depressive symptoms after HCV cure. Mental health and lifestyle-related issues should be integrated in a global care model for PLWH living with or having a history of hepatitis C.

Abstract: We present inclusive distributions for final-state hadrons produced in inelastic muon-proton scattering. Over the total energy range $2lWl4.7$ GeV and the momentum-transfer range $0.3l{Q}^{2}l4.5$ Ge${\mathrm{V}}^{2}$, the fractional momentum and energy distributions approximately scale. Distributions in transverse momentum display an interesting two-component behavior. They show no dependence on the virtual-photon "mass squared" ${Q}^{2}$, and have average values typical of other hadron-initiated reactions. A comparison of our distributions with those seen in ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ annihilation and neutrino-nucleon scattering shows agreement, in support of quark-parton fragmentation ideas. We further break these distributions down by event topology.

No candidate event has been found, the result yielding an upper limit for the branching ratio of B/sub mu3e/ ..e/sup +/e/sup +/e/sup -/..nu../sub e/nu-bar/sub ..mu../ events, eleven such events were observed. They agree in number and spectra with expectations based on standard electroweak theory.

Abstract: Some general criteria for the validity of the hard-scattering expansion are discussed and applied to the production of massive lepton pairs. Problems and inconsistencies in adding transverse momentum to the quark distribution are described in detail. Gauge invariance problems in quantum chromodynamics treatments are briefly discussed. Tests to differentiate between different sources for the transverse momentum of the photon and different models are given. Sample numerical predictions of the meson-quark model (which in a previous paper was shown to fit proton-beam data) are presented for meson-beam processes. Further tests of the model are described, and a simple universal transverse-momentum distribution is given that is expected to hold for all beam particles.

Abstract: We describe a new neutrino (ν) detection technique which greatly enhances signal-to-noise ratios (S/N) for a variety of experiments with medium energy neutrino beams. This technique involves the simultaneous detection of a lepton and a neutron in various final states of ν induced interactions. We take as an example the reaction νep→e+n and demonstrate the feasibility of detecting the neutron in fast (≲ 30 ns) time coincidence with the positron trigger. The detection efficiency for 1–3 MeV neutrons by proton recoil in a liquid scintillator test module is shown to be 40%. Monte Carlo studies indicate an e±n detection efficiency of 6% for a sample 6.1 ton detector, to be compared with an e+ only detection efficiency of 32%. Cosmic ray and beam induced background rates are reduced by over a factor of 200, improving S/N by a factor of 40. We show that this sample detector, consisting of walls of liquid scintillator modules interspersed with drift chambers and surrounded by active anti-coincidence and passive shielding, can achieve the same sensitivity to νep→e+n as a detector three times its size. We point out the utility of such a detector for various potential neutrino experiments and facilities; i.e., the proposed High Intensity Los Alamos Neutrino Facility.

Abstract: From a muon-proton scattering experiment with a streamer chamber at the Stanford Linear Accelerator we present results in the ranges 0.3 .. ..mu..pV where V is a vector meson (rho/sup 0/, ..omega.., or phi). It is shown that in rho production the skewing parameter and the longitudinal-transverse ratio change significantly as Q/sup 2/ increases above 1 GeV/sup 2/. The cross section for rho/sup 0/ production as a function of Q/sup 2/ falls below the vector-meson-dominance prediction. The ratio of the cross section for exclusive vector-meson production to the total cross section falls by a factor of 10 between photoproduction and a Q/sup 2/ of 2 GeV/sup 2/, yet the ratio of ..omega.. to rho production remains constant at the photoproduction value out to Q/sup 2/ > 2 GeV/sup 2/.

Abstract: Based on approximately 10 000 inelastic muon scatters in a liquid deuterium target, we extract charged-hadron multiplicities and topological cross sections for events off the neutron in a range 0.3 < or = Q/sup 2/ < or = 4.5 GeV/sup 2/, 2.0 < or = W < or = 4.6 GeV. We find no significant changes in the multiplicity or topological fractional cross sections over the Q/sup 2/ range of our experiment. Empirically the average multiplicity off a neutron target is equal to that off a proton target over the Q/sup 2/ and W range of our experiment.

Abstract: A search has been performed for the decays μ → eee, μ → e γ , and μ → eγγ with a sensitivity in the branching ratios at the level of 10 −10 . The experiment used a separated, 26 MeV/c μ + beam with an average intensity of 300kHz. A total of 2.2 × 10 11 muon decays were examined for the present result. The detector for the experiment Is the Crystal Box, which consists of a cylindrical drift chamber surrounded by 396 NaI(T1) crystals. A layer of scintillation counters in front of the crystals provided timing for electrons and a veto for photons. The energy resolution for electrons and photons is ≈6% (FWHM). The position resolution of the drift chamber is 350 μm leading to a vertex cut with a rejection of 10 3 for μ → eee. The timing resolution is ≈300 ps from the scintillators and ~1 ns from the crystals. No candidate for μ → eee has been found, yielding an upper limit for the branching ratio of B μ 3e −10 (90% C.L.).

Abstract: We report the results of an experiment which examines the entire final state of events in which muon pairs were produced in 15.5-GeV/c ..pi../sup + -/p interactions. A portion of this data was presented earlier. Here we report on the final data sample of 890 events obtained from a total of 2.5 x 10/sup 8/ interactions (a sensitivity of (8.65 events/nb) x trigger efficiency). The experiment was sensitive primarily to the low-mass region and the good mass resolution made it possible to identify the contributions from the rho and ..omega.. decays and the eta and ..omega.. Dalitz decays. An excess of events is observed in the dimuon mass region approx.400 -- 600 MeV which is not accounted for by the above-mentioned decays. The final states were examined to search for characteristic differences from those in events without dimuons.

Abstract: We present the fractional energy distributions for positive and negative hadrons produced in muon-proton and muon-neutron scattering, and ensuing charge ratios for the photon fragmentation region. Data presented for a center-of-mass energy range $2.8lWl4.5$ GeV and a virtual-photon mass-squared range $0.5\ensuremath{\le}{Q}^{2}\ensuremath{\le}4.5$ ${\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$ indicate an overall equality of summed structure functions for neutron and proton targets, which exhibit approximate independence of ${Q}^{2}$ and ${\ensuremath{\omega}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$, Implications in terms of quark-fragmentation ideas are discussed.

Abstract: A search has been performed for the decays μ → eee, μ → eγ, and μ → eγγ with a sensitivity in the branching ratios at the level of 10−10. The experiment used a surface muon beam at LAMPF with an average intensity of 300 kHz. A total of ≳1011 muon decays was examined for the present result. The detector for the experiment is the Crystal Box which consists of a cylindrical drift chamber surrounded by 396 NaI(T1) crystals. A layer of scintillation counters in front of the crystals provided timing for electrons and a veto for photons. The energy resolution for electrons and photons is ∼6% (FWHM). The position resolution of the drift chamber is 350 μm leading to a vertex cut with a rejection of 103 for μ → eee. The timing resolution is ∼400 ps from the scintillators and ∼1 ns from the crystals. From these values, the eee and eγγ limits are expected to be background free.

20. Instabilities, Turbulence, and the Physics of Fixed Points

Abstract: By solving the recursion relation of a reaction-diffusion equation on a lattice, we find two distinct routes to turbulence, both of which reproduce commonly observed phenomena: the Feigeribaum route, with period-doubling frequencies; and a much more general route with noncommensurate frequencies and frequency entrainment, and locking. Intermittency and large-scale aperiodic spatial patterns, also observed in physical systems, are reproduced in this new route. The fractal dimension has been estimated to be about 2.6 in the oscillatory instability and about 6.0 in the turbulent regime.

Abstract: A search has been performed for the muon-number-violating decay ..mu.. ..-->.. e/sup +/e/sup +/e/sup -/. No candidate event has been found, yielding an upper limit for the branching ratio of B/sub ..mu..3e/ .. e/sup +/e/sup +/e/sup -/ anti nu/sub ..mu../nu/sub e/ events, 11 such events were observed. They agree in number and spectra with expectations based on standard electroweak theory. 9 references.

Abstract: International audience; BACKGROUND: Thanks to direct-acting antivirals, hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection can be cured, with similar rates in HCV-infected and HIV-HCV co-infected patients. HCV cure is likely to foster behavioral changes in psychoactive substance use, which is highly prevalent in people living with HIV (PLWH). Cannabis is one substance that is very commonly used by PLWH, sometimes for therapeutic purposes. We aimed to identify correlates of cannabis use reduction following HCV cure in HIV-HCV co-infected cannabis users and to characterize persons who reduced their use. METHODS: We used data collected on HCV-cured cannabis users in a cross-sectional survey nested in the ANRS CO13 HEPAVIH cohort of HIV-HCV co-infected patients, to perform logistic regression, with post-HCV cure cannabis reduction as the outcome, and socio-behavioral characteristics as potential correlates. We also characterized the study sample by comparing post-cure substance use behaviors between those who reduced their cannabis use and those who did not. RESULTS: Among 140 HIV-infected cannabis users, 50 and 5 had reduced and increased their use, respectively, while 85 had not changed their use since HCV cure. Cannabis use reduction was significantly associated with tobacco use reduction, a decrease in fatigue level, paying more attention to one's dietary habits since HCV cure, and pre-HCV cure alcohol abstinence (p = 0.063 for alcohol use reduction). CONCLUSIONS: Among PLWH using cannabis, post-HCV cure cannabis reduction was associated with tobacco use reduction, improved well-being, and adoption of healthy behaviors. The management of addictive behaviors should therefore be encouraged during HCV treatment.

Abstract: International audience; Mortality among individuals co-infected with HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) is relatively high. We evaluated the association between psychoactive substance use and both HCV and non-HCV mortality in HIV/HCV co-infected patients in France, using Fine and Gray's competing-risk model adjusted for socio-demographic, clinical predictors and confounding factors, while accounting for competing causes of death. Over a 5-year median follow-up period, 77 deaths occurred among 1028 patients. Regular/daily cannabis use, elevated coffee intake, and not currently smoking were independently associated with reduced HCV-mortality (adjusted sub-hazard ratio [95% CI] 0.28 [0.10-0.83], 0.38 [0.15-0.95], and 0.28 [0.10-0.79], respectively). Obesity and severe thinness were associated with increased HCV-mortality (2.44 [1.00-5.93] and 7.25 [2.22-23.6] versus normal weight, respectively). Regular binge drinking was associated with increased non-HCV-mortality (2.19 [1.10-4.37]). Further research is needed to understand the causal mechanisms involved. People living with HIV/HCV co-infection should be referred for tobacco, alcohol and weight control interventions and potential benefits of cannabis-based therapies investigated.

Abstract: International audience; OBJECTIVES:Although common among patients coinfected with HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV), sleep disturbances (SD) are still poorly documented in this population in the HCV cure era. This longitudinal study aimed at analysing SD in HIV-HCV coinfected patients and identifying their clinical and sociobehavioural correlates.METHODS:We used 5-year annual follow-up data from 1047 participants in the French National Agency for Research on Aids and Viral Hepatitis Cohort 13 'Hépatite et VIH' (ANRS CO13 HEPAVIH) cohort of HIV-HCV coinfected patients to identify clinical (medical records) and behavioural (self-administered questionnaires) correlates of SD (mixed-effects logistic regression). SD were identified using one item documenting the occurrence of insomnia or difficulty falling asleep (ANRS 'Action Coordonnée 24' self-reported symptoms checklist), and two items documenting perceived sleep quality (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression and WHO Quality of Life HIV-specific brief scales).RESULTS:Seven hundred and sixteen (68.4%) patients with completed self-administered questionnaires reported SD at their most recent follow-up visit. In the multivariable model, hazardous alcohol consumption (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Consumption score≥4 for men, ≥3 for women) (adjusted odds ratio=1.61; 95% confidence interval: 1.09-2.36), depressive symptoms (6.78; 4.36-10.55) and the number of other physical and psychological self-reported symptoms (1.10; 1.07-1.13) were associated independently with SD after adjustment for sex, age and employment status. HCV cure was not associated significantly with SD.CONCLUSION:SD remain frequent in HIV-HCV coinfected patients and are associated with a series of modifiable behavioural risk factors. Independent of HCV cure, improved screening and comprehensive management of alcohol use, physical and psychological self-reported symptoms and depression are essential in this population. Closer investigation of these risk factors of SDs may both increase sleep quality and indirectly improve patients' clinical outcomes.
