Context. Infrared spectroscopy over a wide spectral range and at the highest resolving powers (R > 70 000) has proved to be one of the leading techniques to unveil the atmospheric composition of dozens of exoplanets. The recently upgraded spectrograph CRIRES instrument at the Very Large Telescope (CRIRES+) was operative for a first science verification in September 2021, and its new capabilities in atmospheric characterization were ready to be tested. Aims. We analyzed transmission spectra of the hot Saturn WASP-20b in the K band (1981–2394 nm) that were acquired with CRIRES+ with the aim to detect the signature of H2O and CO. Methods. We used a principal component analysis to remove dominant time-dependent contaminating sources such as telluric bands and the stellar spectrum. We extracted the planet spectrum by cross-correlating observations with 1D and 3D synthetic spectra, without circulation. Results. We present the tentative detection of molecular absorption from water vapor at a signal-to-noise ratio equal to 4.2 and 4.7 by using only H2O 1D and 3D models, respectively. The peak of the cross-correlation function occurred at the same rest-frame velocity for both model types (Vrest = −1 ± 1 km s−1 ) and at the same projected orbital velocity of the planet, but with different error bands (1D model: Kp = 131 −29+18 k ms −1; 3D: Kp = 131 −39+23 k ms −1). Our results agree with the result expected in the literature (132.9 ± 2.7 km −1). Conclusions. Although the observational conditions were not ideal and we had problems with the pipeline in calibrating and reducing our raw data set, we obtained the first tentative detection of water in the atmosphere of WASP-20b. We suggest a deeper analysis and additional observations to confirm our results and unveil the presence of CO.

Aims. We present the first detailed analysis of the astrophysical parameters of the poorly studied Sco-Cen member HD 152384 and its circumstellar environment. Methods. We analyze newly obtained optical-near-IR XSHOOTER spectra, as well as archival TESS data, of HD 152384. In addition, we use literature photometric data to construct a detailed spectral energy distribution (SED) of the star. Results. The photospheric absorption lines in the spectrum of HD 152384 are characteristic of a A0 V star, for which we derive a stellar mass of 2.1 +/- 0.1 M_sun and a stellar age > 4.5 Myr. Superimposed on the photospheric absorption, the optical spectrum also displays double-peaked emission lines of Ca II, Fe I, Mg I and Si I, typical of circumstellar disks. Notably, all Hydrogen and Helium lines appear strictly in absorption. A toy model shows that the observed emission line profiles can be reproduced by emission from a compact (radius < 0.3 au) disk seen at an inclination of ~24 degrees. Further evidence for the presence of circumstellar material comes from the detection of a moderate infrared excess in the SED, similar to those found in extreme debris disk systems. Conclusions. We conclude that HD 152384 is surrounded by a tenuous circumstellar disk which, although rich in refractory elements, is highly depleted of volatile elements. To the best of our knowledge such a disk is unique within the group of young stars. However, it is reminiscent of the disks seen in some white dwarfs, which have been attributed to the disruption of rocky planets. T Tauri has long been the prototypical young pre-main-sequence star. However, it has now been decomposed into a triple system with a complex disk and outflow geometry. We aim to measure the brightness of all three components of the T Tauri system (T Tau N, T Tau Sa, T Tau Sb) in the mid-infrared in order to obtain photometry around the $\sim 9.7~\mu m$ silicate feature. This allows us to study their variability and to investigate the distribution of dust and the geometry of circumstellar and circumbinary disks in this complex system. We observe T Tauri with the VLT/VISIR-NEAR instrument. With kernel phase interferometry post-processing of the data, and using the astrometric positions of all three components from VLT/SPHERE, we measure the three components' individual brightnesses (including the southern binary at an angular separation down to $\sim 0.2~\lambda/D$) and obtain their photometry. In order to validate our methods, we simulate and recover mock data of the T Tauri system using the observed reference point-spread function of HD 27639. We find that T Tau N is rather stable and shows weak silicate emission, while T Tau Sa is highly variable and shows prominent silicate absorption. T Tau Sb became significantly fainter compared to data from 2004 and 2006, suggesting increased extinction by dust. The precision of our photometry is limited by systematic errors, which is consistent with previous studies using kernel phase interferometry. Our results confirm the complex scenario of misaligned disks in the T Tauri system that had been observed previously, and they are in agreement with the recently observed dimming of T Tau Sb in the near-infrared. Direct imaging is a tried and tested method of detecting exoplanets in the near infrared, but has so far not been extended to longer wavelengths. New data at mid-IR wavelengths (8-20{\mu}m) canprovide additional constraints on planetary atmospheric models. We use the VISIR instrumenton the VLT to detect or set stringent limits on the 8.7{\mu}m flux of the four planets surrounding HR8799, and to search for additional companions. We use a novel circularised PSF subtractiontechnique to reduce the stellar signal and obtain instrument limited background levels andobtain optimal flux limits. The BT SETTL isochrones are then used to determine the resultingmass limits. We find flux limits between 0.7 and 3.3 mJy for the J8.9 flux of the differentplanets at better than5{\sigma}level and derive a new mass limit of 30 MJupfor any objects beyond40 AU. While this work has not detected planets in the HR 8799 system at 8.7{\mu}m, it has foundthat an instrument with the sensitivity of VISIR is sufficient to detect at least 4 known hotplanets around close stars, including\b{eta}Pictoris b (1700 K, 19 pc), with more than5{\sigma}certaintyin 10 hours of observing time in the mid-IR., Comment: Published in MNRAS, 5 pages, 5 figures

Aims. R Coronae Australis (R CrA) is the brightest star of the Coronet nebula of the Corona Australis (CrA) star forming region. It has very red colors, probably due to dust absorption and it is strongly variable. High contrast instruments allow for an unprecedented direct exploration of the immediate circumstellar environment of this star. Methods. We observed R CrA with the near-IR channels (IFS and IRDIS) of SPHERE at VLT. In this paper, we used four different epochs, three of them from open time observations while one is from the SPHERE guaranteed time. The data were reduced using the DRH pipeline and the SPHERE Data Center. On the reduced data we implemented custom IDL routines with the aim to subtract the speckle halo.We have also obtained pupil-tracking H-band (1.45-1.85 micron) observations with the VLT/SINFONI near-infrared medium-resolution (R~3000) spectrograph. Results. A companion was found at a separation of 0.156" from the star in the first epoch and increasing to 0.18400 in the final one. Furthermore, several extended structures were found around the star, the most noteworthy of which is a very bright jet-like structure North-East from the star. The astrometric measurements of the companion in the four epochs confirm that it is gravitationally bound to the star. The SPHERE photometry and the SINFONI spectrum, once corrected for extinction, point toward an early M spectral type object with a mass between 0.3 and 0.55 M?. The astrometric analyis provides constraints on the orbit paramenters: e~0.4, semi-major axis at 27-28 au, inclination of ~ 70{\deg} and a period larger than 30 years. We were also able to put constraints of few MJup on the mass of possible other companions down to separations of few tens of au., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures, accepted by A&A

HH 50138 is one of the brightest B[e] stars at a distance of $\sim$ 380 pc with strong infrared excess. The star was observed in [O I] 63 $\mu$m and [C II] 158 $\mu$m with high velocity resolution with upGREAT on SOFIA. The velocity resolved [O I] emission provides evidence for a large gas-disk, $\sim$ 760 au in size, around HD 50138. Whereas previous interferometric observations give strong evidence for a hot gas and dust disk in Keplerian rotation, our bservations are the first to provide unambiguous evidence for a large warm disk around the star. Herschel/PACS observations showed that the [C II] emission is extended, therefore the [C II] emission most likely originates in an ionized gas shell created by a past outflow event. We confirm the isolated nature of HD 50138. It is far from any star forming region and has low proper motion. Neither is there any sign of a remnant cloud from which it could have formed. The extended disk around the star appears carbon poor. It shows OH and [O I] emission, but no CO. The CO abundance appears to be at least an order of magnitude lower than that of OH. Furthermore $^{13}$CO is enriched by more than a factor of five, confirming that the star is not a Herbig Be star. Finally we note that our high spectral resolution [O I] and [C II] observations provide a very accurate heliocentric velocity of the star, 40.8 $\pm$ 0.2 km~s$^{-1}$., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, to be published in ApJ

Herbig Ae/Be stars span a key mass range that links low and high mass stars, and thus provide an ideal window from which to explore their formation. This paper presents VLT/X-Shooter spectra of 91 Herbig Ae/Be stars, HAeBes; the largest spectroscopic study of HAeBe accretion to date. A homogeneous approach to determining stellar parameters is undertaken for the majority of the sample. Measurements of the ultra-violet (UV) are modelled within the context of magnetospheric accretion, allowing a direct determination of mass accretion rates. Multiple correlations are observed across the sample between accretion and stellar properties: the youngest and often most massive stars are the strongest accretors, and there is an almost 1:1 relationship between the accretion luminosity and stellar luminosity. Despite these overall trends of increased accretion rates in HAeBes when compared to classical T Tauri stars, we also find noticeable differences in correlations when considering the Herbig Ae and Herbig Be subsets. This, combined with the difficulty in applying a magnetospheric accretion model to some of the Herbig Be stars, could suggest that another form of accretion may be occurring within the Herbig Be mass range., Comment: 29 pages, 19 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report on an episode of extremely low precipitable water vapour (PWV) of approximately 0.1 mm with a duration of more than 12 h at European Southern Observatory’s Paranal observatory [2635 m above sea level (asl)]. Such conditions are more commonly expected at sites at much higher altitude such as ALMA on the Chajnantor plateau (5000 m asl) or otherwise particularly dry sites such as locations in Antarctica. We provide a full account of the measurements of PWV and other relevant atmospheric parameters. An explanation of the observed conditions is given in terms of the prevailing meteorological pattern. Based on statistical evidence from measurements by VLT spectrographs (UVES and CRIRES) covering more than a decade, we find that PWV

The Herbig Ae/Be stars (HAeBes) allow an exploration of the properties of Pre-Main Sequence(PMS) stars above the low-mass range ($8{\rm\thinspace M_{\odot}}$). This paper is the second in a series exploring accretion in 91 HAeBes with Very Large Telescope/X-shooter spectra. Equivalent width measurements are carried out on 32 different lines, spanning the UV to NIR, in order to obtain their line luminosities. The line luminosities were compared to accretion luminosities, which were determined directly from measurements of an UV-excess. When detected, emission lines always demonstrate a correlation with the accretion luminosity, regardless of detection frequency. The average relationship between accretion luminosity and line luminosity is found to be ${\thinspace L_{\rm acc}}\propto{\thinspace L_{\rm line}}^{1.16 \pm 0.15}$. This is in agreement with the findings in Classical T Tauri stars, although the HAeBe relationship is generally steeper, particularly towards the Herbig Be mass range. Since all observed lines display a correlation with the accretion luminosity, all of them can be used as accretion tracers. This has increased the number of accretion diagnostic lines in HAeBes tenfold. We report on the first results of a search for molecular hydrogen emission from protoplanetary disks using CRIRES, ESO's new VLT Adaptive Optics high resolution near-infrared spectrograph. We observed the classical T Tauri star LkH α 264 and the debris disk 49 Cet, and searched for $\upsilon= 1{-}0$ S(1) H 2 emission at 2.1218 μ m, $\upsilon = 1{-}0$ S(0) H 2 emission at 2.2233 μ m and $\upsilon = 2{-}1$ S(1) H 2 emission at 2.2477 μ m. The H 2 line at 2.1218 μ m is detected in LkH α 264 confirming the previous observations by Itoh et al. (2003). In addition, our CRIRES spectra reveal the previously observed but not detected H 2 line at 2.2233 μ m in LkH α 264. An upper limit of 5.3 $\times 10^{-16}$ erg s -1 cm -2 on the $\upsilon = 2{-}1$ S(1) H 2 line flux in LkH α 264 is derived. The detected lines coincide with the rest velocity of LkH α 264. They have a FWHM of ~20 km s -1 . This is strongly suggestive of a disk origin for the lines. These observations are the first simultaneous detection of $\upsilon = 1{-}0$ S(1) and $\upsilon = 1{-}0$ S(0) H 2 emission from a protoplanetary disk. 49 Cet does not exhibit H 2 emission in any of the three observed lines. We derive the mass of optically thin H 2 at $T\sim1500$ K in the inner disk of LkH α 264 and derive stringent limits in the case of 49 Cet at the same temperature. There are a few lunar masses of optically thin hot H 2 in the inner disk (~0.1 AU) of LkH α 264, and less than a tenth of a lunar mass of hot H 2 in the inner disk of 49 Cet. The measured 1-0 S(0)/1-0 S(1) and 2-1 S(1)/1-0 S(1) line ratios in LkH α 264 indicate that the H 2 emitting gas is at a temperature lower than 1500 K and that the H 2 is most likely thermally excited by UV photons. The $\upsilon = 1{-}0$ S(1) H 2 line in LkH α 264 is single peaked and spatially unresolved. Modeling of the shape of the line suggests that the disk should be seen close to face-on ($i α 264 disk. A comparative analysis of the physical properties of classical T Tauri stars in which the H 2 $\upsilon = 1{-}0$ S(1) line has been detected and non-detected indicates that the presence of H 2 emission is correlated with the magnitude of the UV excess and the strength of the H α line. The lack of H 2 emission in the NIR spectra of 49 Cet and the absence of H α emission suggest that the gas in the inner disk of 49 Cet has dissipated. These results combined with previous detections of 12 CO emission at sub-mm wavelengths indicate that the disk surrounding 49 Cet should have an inner hole. We favor inner disk dissipation by inside-out photoevaporation, or the presence of an unseen low-mass companion as the most likely explanations for the lack of gas in the inner disk of 49 Cet.

The mass and dynamics of protoplanetary disks are dominated by molecular hydrogen (H2). However, observationally very little is known about the H2. In this paper, we discuss two projects aimed to constrain the properties of H2 in the disk's planet forming region (R2 emission at 12.278 and 17.035 μm in a sample of nearby Herbig Ae/Be and T Tauri stars using VISIR, ESO's VLT high-resolution mid-infrared spectrograph. Second, we report on a search for H2 ro-vibrational emission at 2.1228, 2.2233 and 2.2477 μm in the classical T Tauri star LkHα 264 and the debris disk 49 Cet employing CRIRES, ESO's VLT high-resolution near-infrared spectrograph.VISIR project: none of the sources show H2 mid-IR emission. The observed disks contain less than a few tenths of MJupiter of optically thin H2 at 150 K, and less than a few MEarth at T>300 K. % and higher T. Our non-detections are consistent with the low flux levels expected from the small amount of H2 gas in the surface layer of a Chiang and Goldreich (1997) Herbig Ae two-layer disk model. In our sources the H2 and dust in the surface layer have not significantly departed from thermal coupling (Tgas/TdustCRIRES project: The H2 lines at 2.1218 μm and 2.2233 μm are detected in LkHα 264. An upper limit on the 2.2477 μm H2 line flux in LkHα 264 is derived. 49 Cet does not exhibit H2 emission in any of observed lines. There are a few MMoon of optically thin hot H2 in the inner disk (∼0.1 AU) of LkHα 264, and less than a tenth of a MMoon of hot H2 in the inner disk of 49 Cet. The shape of the 1–0 S(0) line indicates that LkHα disk is close to face-on (io). The measured 1–0 S(0)/1–0 S(1) and 2–1 S(1)/1–0 S(1) line ratios in LkHα 264 indicate that the H2 is thermally excited at T2 emission in the NIR spectra of 49 Cet and the absence of Hα emission suggest that the gas in the inner disk of 49 Cet has dissipated.

The number of well-studied early-type pre-main-sequence objects is very limited, hampering the study of massive star formation from an observational point of view. Here, we present the results of VLT/FORS2 spectropolarimetric and VLT/X-shooter spectroscopic observations of two recently recognised candidate Herbig Be stars, PDS 27 and PDS 37. Through analysis of spectral lines and photometry, we find that these two objects are hot, 17500 $\pm$ 3500~K, have large radii, 17.0 $\pm$ 4.0 and 25.8 $\pm$ 5.0~${\rm R}_\odot$, and are very massive, 15.3 (+5.4, -4.4) and 21.1 (+11.0, -5.3)~M$_{\odot}$ for PDS 27 and PDS 37, respectively. This suggests that these two objects are very young in their evolution and may become O-type stars. Their youth is supported by their high accretion rates of the order of $10^{-3}$--$10^{-4.5}~{\rm M}_\odot$/yr. A change in linear polarisation across the absorption component of H$\alpha$ is detected in both objects. This change indicates that the circumstellar environment close to the star, at scales of several stellar radii, has a flattened structure, which we identify as an inner accretion disk. Strong variability is seen in both objects in many lines as further indication of an active circumstellar environment., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

We present multi-epoch high-spectral resolution observations with VLT/CRIRES of the OH doublet $^2\Pi_{3/2}$ P4.5 (1+,1-) (2.934 $\mu$m) towards the protoplanetary disk around HD 100546. The OH doublet is detected at all epochs and is spectrally resolved while nearby H$_2$O lines remains undetected. The OH line velocity profile is different in the three datasets: in the first epoch (April 2012, PA=26$^{\circ}$) the OH lines are symmetric and line broadening is consistent with the gas being in Keplerian rotation around the star. No OH emission is detected within a radius of 8-11 au from the star: the line emitting region is similar in size and extent to that of the CO ro-vibrational lines. In the other two epochs (March 2013 and April 2014, PA=90$^{\circ}$ and 10$^{\circ}$, respectively) the OH lines appear asymmetric and fainter compared to April 2012. We investigate the origin of these line asymmetries which were taken by previous authors as evidence for tidal interaction between an (unseen) massive planet and the disk. We show that the observed asymmetries can be fully explained by a misalignment of the slit of order 0\farcs04-0\farcs20 with respect to the stellar position. The disk is spatially resolved and the slit misalignment is likely caused by the extended dust emission which is brighter than the stellar photosphere at near-infrared wavelengths which is the wavelength used for the pointing. This can cause the photo-center of HD 100546 to be mis-aligned with the stellar position at near-infrared wavelengths., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Herbig Ae/Be stars lie in the mass range between low and high mass young stars, and therefore offer a unique opportunity to observe any changes in the formation processes that may occur across this boundary. This paper presents medium resolution VLT/X-Shooter spectra of six Herbig Ae/Be stars, drawn from a sample of 91 targets, and high resolution VLT/CRIRES spectra of five Herbig Ae/Be stars, chosen based on the presence of CO first overtone bandhead emission in their spectra. The X-Shooter survey reveals a low detection rate of CO first overtone emission (7 per cent), consisting of objects mainly of spectral type B. A positive correlation is found between the strength of the CO v=2-0 and Br {\gamma} emission lines, despite their intrinsic linewidths suggesting a separate kinematic origin. The high resolution CRIRES spectra are modelled, and are well fitted under the assumption that the emission originates from small scale Keplerian discs, interior to the dust sublimation radius, but outside the co-rotation radius of the central stars. In addition, our findings are in very good agreement for the one object where spatially resolved near-infrared interferometric studies have also been performed. These results suggest that the Herbig Ae/Be stars in question are in the process of gaining mass via disc accretion, and that modelling of high spectral resolution spectra is able to provide a reliable probe into the process of stellar accretion in young stars of intermediate to high masses., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 14 pages, 5 figures

The distance and formation history of the very young open cluster NGC 6530 were investigated by study- ing a total of 132 probable member stars of this open cluster. It was concluded that the distance to NGC 6530 is 1:8 0:2 kpc, and its interstellar reddening E(B V ) is 0: m 30. Furthermore, we conclude that the extinction law of the intracluster material is normal (i.e. RV =3 :1), but anomalous extinction laws were found for several more embedded stars in the cluster. Of the 132 stars included in this study, 11 are suspected to be variable, ve show H in emission and nine show an infrared excess. Among the member stars of NGC 6530, three were found to be part of the Herbig Ae/Be stellar class, whereas two others are possible members of this stellar group as well. Also, one cluster member is probably a new massive post-AGB star, whereas the same could possibly apply to another member star. Finally, from the distribution of post- and pre-main sequence stars in the cluster's HR-diagram, it was concluded that the process of star formation in NGC 6530 must have started a few times 10 7 years ago and, for the less massive stars, is probably still going on today.

We present a survey of high dispersion UV and optical spectra of Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) and related stars. We nd accreting, circumstellar gas over the velocity range +100 to +400 km s 1 , and absorption proles similar to those seen toward Pic, in 36% of the 33 HAeBe stars with IUE data as well as in 3 non-emission B stars. We also nd evidence of accretion in 7 HAeBe stars with optical data only. Line prole variability appears ubiquitous. As a group, the stars with accreting gas signatures have higher v sini than the stars with outflowing material, and tend to exhibit large amplitude ( 1 m ) optical light variations. All of the program stars with polarimetric variations that are anti-correlated with the optical light, previously interpreted as the signature of a dust disk viewed close to equator-on, also show spectral signatures of accreting gas. These data imply that accretion activity in HAeBe stars is preferentially observed when the line of sight transits the circumstellar dust disk. Our data imply that the spectroscopic signatures of accreting circumstellar material seen in Pic are not unique to that object, but instead are consistent with interpretation of Pic as a comparatively young A star with its associated circumstellar disk.

We present new imaging and spectroscopic data of the young Herbig star HD 144432 A, which was known to be a binary star with a separation of 1.47 arcsec. High-resolution NIR imaging data obtained with NACO at the VLT reveal that HD 144432 B itself is a close binary pair with a separation of 0.1 arcsec. High-resolution optical spectra, acquired with FEROS at the 2.2m MPG/ESO telescope in La Silla, of the primary star and its co-moving companions were used to determine their main stellar parameters such as effective temperature, surface gravity, radial velocity, and projected rotational velocity by fitting synthetic spectra to the observed stellar spectra. The two companions, HD 144432 B and HD 144432 C, are identified as low-mass T Tauri stars of spectral type K7V and M1V, respectively. The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is preparing to upgrade VISIR, the mid-IR imager and spectrograph at the VLT. The project team is comprised of ESO staff and members of the original consortium that built VISIR: CEA Saclay and ASTRON. The goal is to enhance the scientific performance of VISIR and to facilitate its use by the ESO community. In order to capture the needs of the user community, we collected input from the users by means of a webbased questionnaire. In line with the results of the internal study and the input from the user community, the upgrade plan calls for a combination measures: installation of improved hardware, optimization of instrument operations and software support. The limitations of the current detector (sensitivity, cosmetics, artifacts) have been known for some time and a new 1k x 1k Si:As Aquarius array (Raytheon) will be the cornerstone of the VISIR upgrade project. A modified spectroscopic mode will allow covering the N-band in a single observation. Several new scientific modes (e.g., polarimetry, coronagraphy) will be implemented on a best effort basis. In addition, the VISIR operational scheme will be enhanced to ensure that optimal use of the observing conditions will be made. Specifically, we plan to provide a means to monitor precipitable water vapour (PWV) and enable the user to specify it as a constraint set for service mode observations. In some regions of the mid-IR domain, the amount of PWV has a fundamental effect on the quality of a given night for mid-IR astronomy. The plan also calls for full support by ESO pipelines that will deliver science-ready data products. Hence the resulting files will provide physical units and error information and all instrumental signatures will have been removed. An upgraded VISIR will be a powerful instrument providing diffraction-limited performance at an 8-m telescope. Its improved performance and efficiency as well as new science capabilities will serve the needs of the ESO community but will also offer synergy with various other facilities such as ALMA, JWST, VLTI and SOFIA. A wealth of targets for detailed study will be available from survey work done by VISTA and WISE. Finally, the upgraded VISIR will also serve as a pathfinder for potential mid-IR instrumentation at the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) in terms of technology as well as operations.

Based on the SED, Herbig stars have been categorized into two observational groups, reflecting their overall disk structure: group I members have disks with a higher degree of flaring than their group II counterparts. We investigate the 5-35 um Spitzer IRS spectra of a sample of 13 group I sources and 20 group II sources. We focus on the continuum emission to study the underlying disk geometry. We have determined the [30/13.5] and [13.5/7] continuum flux ratios. The 7-um flux excess with respect to the stellar photosphere is measured, as a marker for the strength of the near-IR emission produced by the inner disk. We have compared our data to self-consistent passive-disk model spectra, for which the same quantities were derived. We confirm the literature result that the difference in continuum emission between group I and II sources can largely be explained by a different amount of small dust grains. However, we report a strong correlation between the [30/13.5] and [13.5/7] flux ratios for Meeus group II sources. Moreover, the [30/13.5] flux ratio decreases with increasing 7-um excess for all targets in the sample. To explain these correlations with the models, we need to introduce an artificial scaling factor for the inner disk height. In roughly 50% of the Herbig Ae/Be stars in our sample, the inner disk must be inflated by a factor 2 to 3 beyond what hydrostatic calculations predict. The total disk mass in small dust grains determines the degree of flaring. We conclude, however, that for any given disk mass in small dust grains, the shadowing of the outer (tens of AU) disk is determined by the scale height of the inner disk (1 AU). We present a multi‐wavelength examination of the disk and environment of the near‐ZAMS Herbig Ae star HD 100453 A. Chandra ACIS‐S imagery shows that the Herbig Ae star has Lx/Lbol and a pulse height spectrum similar to β Pic Moving Group early F stars, suggesting a similar magnetic field configuration and X‐ray production in winds. The disk lacks the conspicuous Fe II emission and continuum seen in FUV spectra of actively accreting Herbig Ae stars, and FUSE, HST ACS FUV, and FEROS data suggest a 3σ upper limit on accretion rate of 4.0×10−10 M⊙ yr−1. Weak, variable Hα and Brγ emission suggest low levels of intermittent accretion or contamination by stellar activity. We confirm that HD 100453 B is a common proper motion companion to HD 100453 A, with a spectral type of M4.0V—M4.5V, and derive an age of 14±4 Myr. It is likely the companion has truncated the circumprimary disk radius at less than ∼50 AU, and we estimate the dust mass to be ∼0.1 MJ. We investigate the physical properties and spatial distribution of Carbon Monoxide (CO) gas in the disks around the Herbig Ae/Be stars HD 97048 and HD 100546. Using high-spectral-resolution 4.588-4.715 $\mu$m spectra containing fundamental CO emission taken with CRIRES on the VLT, we probe the circumstellar gas and model the kinematics of the emission lines. By using spectro-astrometry on the spatially resolved targets, we constrain the physical size of the emitting regions in the disks. We resolve, spectrally and spatially, the emission of the $^{13}$CO v(1-0) vibrational band and the $^{12}$CO $v=1-0, v=2-1, v=3-2$ and $v=4-3$ vibrational bands in both targets, as well as the $^{12}$CO $v=5-4$ band in HD 100546. Modeling of the CO emission with a homogeneous disk in Keplerian motion, yields a best fit with an inner and outer radius of the CO emitting region of 11 and $\geq$ 100 AU for HD 97048. HD 100546 is not fit well with our model, but we derive a lower limit on the inner radius of 8 AU. The fact that gaseous [OI] emission was previously detected in both targets at significantly smaller radii suggests that CO may be effectively destroyed at small radii in the surface layers of these disks, Comment: v2: Letter format has been changed to Paper format; Change in the focus of the paper towards CO depletion; Major changes in text; Change of title. We observed the Herbig Ae/Be stars UX Ori, HD 34282, HD 100453, HD 101412, HD 104237 and HD 142666, and the T Tauri star HD 319139 and searched for H2 0-0 S(2) emission at 12.278 micron and H2 0-0 S(1) emission at 17.035 micron with VISIR, ESO-VLT's high-resolution MIR spectrograph. None of the sources present evidence for H2 emission. Stringent 3sigma upper limits to the integrated line fluxes and the mass of optically thin warm gas in the disks are derived. The disks contain less than a few tenths of Jupiter mass of optically thin H2 gas at 150 K at most, and less than a few Earth masses of optically thin H2 gas at 300 K and higher temperatures. We compare our results to a Chiang and Goldreich (1997, CG97) two-layer disk model. The upper limits to the disk's optically thin warm gas mass are smaller than the amount of warm gas in the interior layer of the disk, but they are much larger than the amount of molecular gas in the surface layer. We present a calculation of the expected thermal H2 emission from optically thick disks, assuming a CG97 disk structure, a gas-to-dust ratio of 100 and Tgas = Tdust. The expected H2 thermal emission fluxes from typical disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars (10^-16 to 10^-17 erg/s/cm2 at 140 pc) are much lower than the detection limits of our observations (5*10^-15 erg/s/cm2). H2 emission levels are very sensitive to departures from the thermal coupling between the molecular gas and dust. Additional sources of heating of gas in the disk's surface layer could have a major impact on the expected H2 disk emission. We have carried out a spectroscopic monitoring programme of several isolated Herbig Ae stars covering the He i 5876 A, Na iD2,1 and Hα lines. In a first study we have demonstrated that for UX Ori a variable accretion activity similar to that seen towards β Pic can be identified from redshifted components in these lines. Here we present, in part, the detection of similar events for BF Ori.

Context. The study of the formation of massive stars is complicated because of the short times scales, large distances, and obscuring natal clouds. There are observational and theoretical indications that the circumstellar environment of Herbig Be (HBe) stars is substantially different from that of their lower mass counterparts, the T Tauri and Herbig Ae stars.Aims. We map the spatial distribution and mineralogy of the warm circumstellar dust of a sample of HBe stars. We compare our results to a sample of less massive Herbig Ae stars.Methods. We used literature photometry to obtain optical extinctions and stellar parameters of the targets. We obtained N-band imaging and long-slit spectroscopic data with the VISIR instrument at the VLT and we analyzed these data. We performed photometry of the images and extracted spatial information. We corrected the spectra for extinction and performed mineralogical fits. We fitted Gaussian profiles to characterize the spatial extent of the spectra along the VISIR slit.Results. We find that the mid-infrared (IR) emission of the HBe stars is typically characterized by a circumstellar disk that efficiently reprocesses a substantial portion of the stellar flux. The mid-IR flux levels, the spatial compactness, and the dust composition are quite similar to those of the Herbig Ae stars. We find upper limits to the full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) size of the mid-IR emission of ~500 AU. The main differences with the lower mass stars are the lower overall IR excess with a greater variety in shapes, the weaker PAH reprocessing power, and the lack of a silica-forsterite relation. The discrepancies between VISIR and IRAS photometry, the far-IR contributions and the large PAH sizes of HBe stars are attributed to natal clouds.Conclusions. Our results suggest that the Herbig Be disks are flatter than those around lower mass stars and they are likely truncated from the outside by photoevaporation.

We present FEROS high-resolution (R~45000) optical spectroscopy of 34 Herbig Ae/Be star candidates with previously unknown or poorly constrained spectral types. Within the sample, 16 sources are positionally coincident with nearby (d700 pc (Hen 2-80, Hen 3-1121 N&S, HD 313571, MWC 953, WRAY 15-1435, and Th 17-35) are inside or close (, 24 pages, 6 Figures, accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics, in press.

The pre-main sequence star V1647 Ori started a new outburst in August 2008. From October 2008 to February 2009 we monitored V1647 Ori, obtaining quasi-simultaneous VLT-CRIRES near-IR spectroscopy, VLT-VISIR mid-IR spectroscopy and VLT-FORS2 optical spectroscopy. We studied the evolution of H2 and CO emission from hot and warm gas and Hα and forbidden line-emission during the initial outburst phase of V1647 Ori. Hα is observed in emission displaying P-Cygni profiles with blue-shifted absorption up to –700 km/s, suggesting the presence of a high velocity wind (Fig. 1a). [OI] emission at 6300 Å is observed displaying a blue-shifted emission shoulder, indicating the presence of material moving away from the star (Fig. 1b). We detect H2 1-0 S(1) and CO (P4 to P14 and P30-P38) ro-vibrational lines centered at the velocity of the star at all epochs (Fig. 1c & d). This strongly suggests that the H2 and CO emission originates from a disk and not from a warm outflow. The H2 1–0 S(0) and 2-1 S(1) ro-vibrational lines at 2.22 and 2.24 μm and the pure-rotational H2 0–0 S(1) and 0–0 S(2) lines at 17 and 12 μm were not detected in our spectra. Changes in the Hα and [OI] profiles and the H2 and CO emission observed do not correlate. We modeled the H2 and CO line profiles assuming emission from a flat disk in keplerian rotation with line intensity decreasing with radius (I ~ I0(R/Rmin)−α). We found that the disk of V1647 Ori is observed nearly face-on and that the line emission is produced within a fraction of an AU of the star (Fig. 1d).

Context. The direct imaging of rocky exoplanets is one of the major science goals of upcoming large telescopes. The contrast requirement for imaging such planets is challenging. However, the mid-IR (infrared) regime provides the optimum contrast to directly detect the thermal signatures of exoplanets in our solar neighbourhood. Aims. We aim to exploit novel fast-chopping techniques newly developed for astronomy with the aid of adaptive optics to look for thermal signatures of exoplanets around bright stars in the solar neighbourhood. Methods. We used the upgraded Very Large Telescope Imager and Spectrometer for the mid-InfraRed (VISIR) instrument with high-contrast imaging capability optimised for observations at 10 μm to look for exoplanets around five nearby (d < 4 pc) stars. The instrument provides an improved signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) by a factor of ~4 in the N-band compared to standard VISIR for a given S/N and time. Results. In this work, we achieve a detection sensitivity of sub-mJy, which is sufficient to detect a few Jupiter mass planets in nearby systems. Although no detections are made, we achieve most sensitive limits within ϵ Indi A and ϵ Eri, we achieve detection limits very close to the giant planets discovered by RV, with the limits on ϵ Indi A being the most sensitive to date. Our non-detection therefore supports an older age for ϵ Indi A. The results presented here are promising for high-contrast imaging and exoplanet detections in the mid-IR regime.
