Abstract

In this paper we present results on transverse mass spectra and Hanbury-Brown and Twiss correlation functions of negatively charged hadrons, which are expected to be mostly negative pions, measured in Pb-Pb collisions at 40 A GeV/c beam momentum. Based on these data, the collision dynamics and the space-time extent of the system at the thermal freeze-out are studied over a centrality range corresponding to the most central 53% of the Pb--Pb inelastic cross section. Comparisons with freeze-out conditions of strange particles and HBT results from other experiments are discussed., 29 pages, 18 figures

Abstract

Results are presented on hyperon and antihyperon production in Pb-Pb, pPb and pBe collisions at 158 GeV/c per nucleon. Lambda, Xi and Omega yields have been measured at central rapidity and medium transverse momentum as functions of the centrality of the collision. Comparing the yields in Pb-Pb to those in pBe interactions, strangeness enhancement is observed. The enhancement increases with the centrality and with the strangeness content of the hyperons, reaching a factor of about 20 for the Omega in the central Pb-Pb collisions., submitted to J. Phys. 3. A study of the E/f1(1420) and of the f1(1285) in central production

Abstract

In central production the WA76 experiment, at the CERN Omega Spectrometer, observes the f1(1285) decaying to K0sK±π∓, ηπ+π−, π+π−π+π−, and ρ0γ. The E/f1(1420) is only observed to decay to K*K. A spin‐parity analysis of the K0sK±π∓ system combined with the observation of E/f1(1420)→K0sK0sπ0 determines the quantum numbers of the E/f1(1420) to be IG(JPC)=0+(1++).

Abstract

Charged-current neutrino interactions have been analysed in a sample of pictures from BEBC equipped with a TST. Using a method independent of both the neutrino flux and nuclear interaction corrections, the ratio R= σn/σp has been measured. The result is R=1.98±0.19 for the ratio of total cross sections. Abstract

A study is presented of dimuon events from an exposure of BEBC to a wide band ν beam from the CERN SPS. These data double the available statistics on ν induced dilepton events observed in bubble chambers. The relative production rate and V0 yield have been measured and found to agree with previous experiments. The analysis of several kinematical variables shows that the gros features of the data agree with the predictions of the GIM model. Some indication exists that part of the signal could be due to quasi elastic production of the “beautiful baryon”, but the statistical significance is too weak to draw definitive conclusions. © 1980, All rights reserved., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract

A study has been made of the production of hyperfragments by the interactions of K−-mesons of 3.0 and 5.0 GeV/c momentum in nuclear emulsion. The observed frequencies of production, (3.0±0.1)% and (2.2±0.1)% respectively, are significantly smaller than at lower K−-meson momenta, while the range distributions show a relative increase in the number of hyperfragments of range greater than 5 µm. This increase is attributed to a larger contribution from the fragmentation process, which is especially significant at intermediate ranges [(10÷50) µm], and to greater mean ranges for the heavy hyperfragments, which broaden the peak at short ranges (⩽10 µm). The hyperfragments of range less than 10 µm are mainly heavy residual products of silver and bromine nuclei; their mass numbers differ on the average from those of the parent nuclei by about 30 and 35 nucleon masses for 3.0 and 5.0 GeV/c interactions respectively. Eight examples of π− mesonic decays of heavy hyperfragments, and one probable example of a double hyperfragment, have been observed.

Abstract

Results of multiple Coulomb scattering measurements on the tracks of high momentum particles in nuclear emulsion are described. It is shown that the method can be used to give reliable momentum estimates, for particles whose tracks are essentially flat in the emulsion, up to 25 GeV/c. Possible deviations from theoretical multiple Coulomb scattering expectations for high cell-sizes are presented.

Abstract

The method of invariant mass spectra of groups of particles, known from the search for multiparticle resonant states in high energy physics, is applied to secondary particles in cosmic ray jets. The results are discussed in connection with the fire-ball model and the H-quanta model for the multiple production of particles in a very high energy region.

Abstract

A search was made in nuclear emulsion for examples of coherent multiple production of pions by diffraction dissociation and Coulomb dissociation. The primary particles were negative pions of 14, 16.2 and 17 GeV/c, and the total track length examined was 971.8 m. Events in which there were three fast charged secondaries and no evidence of disintegration or radioactive decay of the target nucleus were found to contain a large proportion of possible examples of coherent production. This conclusion could be reached without the use of measurements of the momenta of the secondaries. A more detailed analysis was carried out with the aid of the results of momentum determinations, and this led to an estimate of the mean free path of (51−11+18) metres of emulsion for the coherent reaction π−+nucleus→π−+π−+π++ nucleus. An analysis of the distributions of momentum transfer to the target nucleus, as well as a comparison with the results of the bubble-chamber work, provide strong indications that all the complex nuclei in the emulsion act as targets in this reaction, and the results are fully consistent with the hypothesis that diffraction dissociation is the dominant mechanism.

Abstract

Previous resuIts from multiple scattering measurements of high-energy particle tracks in nuclear emulsions indicate a possible discrepancy between theoretically expected values of the mean scattering angle and that found experimentally at cell sizes greater than 1 cm. Further evidence is presented; tracks produced by l6.2-Bev/c pi - and 8.2Bev/c mu - are analyzed. The value of the scattering constant needed to fit the data, for cell sizes greater than l cm is calculated. The unimportance of the nuclear-force contribution and an extended charge for the nucleus are suggested. (L.N.N.)

Abstract

An exposure of BEBC equipped with the hydrogen-filled TST to the v μ wide band beam at the CERN SPS has been used to study v μ interactions on free protons. About neutral induced interactions have been observed inside the hydrogen and separated into charged current, neutral current and neutral hadron interactions using a multivariate discriminant analysis based on the kinematics of the events. The neutral to charged current cross-section ratio has been determined to be R p v = 0.33 ± 0.04. When combined with the value of R p v previously determined in the same experiment, the result is compatible with the prediction of the standard SU (2) × U (1) model for sin 2θ W = 0.24 -0.08 +0.06 and ρ = 1.07 -0.08 +0.06.
