Introduction Ictal olfactory hallucinations (the experience of a smell due to a focal seizure in the absence of an environmental stimulus for the sensation) are rare. They often appear in a context of a brain tumor located in the orbitofrontal or mesotemporal region. However, their accurate prevalence, etiology and anatomical origin remains unclear, as few studies focused on this type of seizures specifically. Objectives To evaluate the clinical, neurophysiological and imaging characteristics of patients with brain tumors and olfactory seizures. Methods We present a 3-year retrospective patient record study carried out at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology in Lisbon. Clinical records of 572 patients admitted due to a primary Central Nervous System (CNS) tumor, for their first neuro-oncology appointment, between July 2020 and July 2023, were reviewed. Results 8 patients with olfactory seizures were identified. Five were men. The mean age was 57.75 (ages between 15 and 70 years old). In seven patients, olfactory seizures constituted the initial clinical presentation of the tumor. In two patients, focal olfactory seizures had progression to bilateral tonic clonic. Most seizures were perceived as unpleasant (smells of metal, ammonia, “hot blood”, “dead bodies” were described). Tumors involved the temporal lobe in all patients, the insula in two of them and, for the majority, the lesion was right-sided. Six patients were diagnosed with Glioblastoma IDH wildtype (Grade 4, WHO), one patient with Oligodendroglioma, IDH-mutated and 1p/19q-codeleted (Grade 2, WHO) and the pediatric patient with a diffuse pediatric type high-grade glioma, H3 and IDH wildtype. The average follow-up time was 6.8 months, two patients died. Conclusions This is the first retrospective study carried out in Portugal that documents the prevalence of olfactory seizures in patients with primary CNS tumors. Given the scarce literary evidence, we consider that olfactory seizures may be more frequent than documented, particularly in the presentation of brain tumors. As so, active semiological investigation may contribute to an earlier diagnosis. Disclosure of Interest None Declared

Introduction and objectives: Asthma is a chronic and heterogeneous disease that affects people of all ages and has a high estimated increase in prevalence worldwide. Asthma control represents a main goal in the disease management. International studies revealed low levels of disease control resulting in a significant burden for healthcare systems, not only in terms of quality of life, but also in terms of health costs. Modifiable and non-modifiable factors have been identified as relating to poor asthma control level. In this study we evaluated the distribution of asthma control levels in Portuguese adult population and examine the determinants associated with uncontrolled asthma. Materials and methods: Using a similar methodology to the one employed in the Asthma Insights and Reality in Europe (AIRE) survey, 327 active asthmatic patients were identified by random phone number and completed a questionnaire during 2011 to 2012. Asthma control was assessed by the evaluation of GINA based symptom control, by Asthma Control Test.äó (ACT) and by self-perception of control. To examine the relationship between uncontrolled asthma and its determinants, univariate logistic regression analysis, sequential multivariable regression and population attributable risk percentage were determinate. Results: 35.2% active asthmatic patients had uncontrolled asthma, 64.8% partially controlled and none of the individuals had total control of asthma assessed by ACT test. Factors significantly associated with poor asthma control scores were: age (OR 1.02 per year of age; 95% CI: 1.01.Çô1.03), female sex (OR 1.87; 95% CI: 1.15.Çô3.04), educational level (OR 0.5; 95% CI: 0.28.Çô0.89 at high school level or over), occupation (OR 4.92; 95% CI: 2.12.Çô11.42 if looking for a first job or unemployed) (OR 2.51; 95% CI: 1.35.Çô4.65 if being retired), income (OR 0.23; 95% CI: 0.07.Çô0.72 if >619 euros), BMI (OR 1.09 per BMI unit; 95% CI: 1.03.Çô1.14), having rhinitis symptoms (OR 4.40; 95% CI: 2.56.Çô7.58) and using inhaled corticosteroids (OR 0.44; 95%CI: 0.24.Çô0.82 if used in the past or never used).Looking for a first job or being unemployed, BMI and having rhinitis symptoms remained significant after multivariate adjustments. Conclusions: Uncontrolled asthma was associated with several determinants. Their identification can contribute to improve asthma care both from clinical and from public health perspectives.

The paper presents a method for aligning the relevant financial and technical procedures for determining drainage assets’ current and replacement values. This alignment is especially pertinent when actual construction costs are unavailable and records in different utility departments (technical and accounting) do not correspond. The current asset value is grounded in estimated construction costs, considering accounting and technical useful lives. Asset portfolio considers the assets providing adequate service quality, regardless of their age. The methodology relies on the update of the assets’ registry (updating the assets’ value), the increase of the accounting useful life in line with technical practice (reducing annual depreciation), and the accumulated depreciation reversion (increasing net current value). In the case study, the need to update information exchange and align technical and financial procedures in Lisbon Municipality was triggered by internal policy requirements concerning the simultaneous development of the urban drainage asset management plan and the requirement to standardize the accounting system. The application of the methodology led to an increase of approximately five times the assets’ current value. The results, their implications, and replicability opportunities are discussed. HIGHLIGHTS Procedure for aligning financial and technical procedures.; The current asset value assessed based on estimated construction cost curves.; Consideration of every asset providing good quality service, regardless of their accounting useful life.;

Geomorphological mapping in mountain regions is key for a better understanding of past and present environmental dynamics. Here, we present a 1:25000 scale geomorphological map covering 553 km2 of the Aran Valley, Upper Garonne Basin (Central Pyrenees). The map identifies 44 different geomorphological units classified under glacial, periglacial, nival, karst, slope, alluvial, and fluvial categories. The area includes geomorphic evidence of past Quaternary glaciations reconstructed based on the distribution of moraines from the valley floor to the highest cirques. Following deglaciation of the valley, the landscape was mainly reshaped by periglacial, slope, alluvial and fluvial processes. In addition to paleoenvironmental reconstruction, the map can also be used to promote geoheritage and geoconservation, as well as for planning. As such, it is of relevance for areas exposed to natural hazards, since present-day slope failures and debris flows frequently impact the villages and infrastructures across the valley floor.

Plastic debris is the most common and exponentially increasing human pollutant in the world's ocean. The distribution and impact of plastic in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans have been the subject of many publications but not so the Indian Ocean (IO). Some of the IO rim countries have the highest population densities globally and mismanagement of plastic waste is of concern in many of these rim states. Some of the most plastic-polluted rivers empty into the IO, with all this suggesting that the IO receives a tremendous amount of plastic debris each year. However, the concentration, distribution, and impacts of plastics in the IO are poorly understood as the region is under-sampled compared to other oceans. In this review, we discuss sources and sinks, which are specific to the IO. We also discuss unique atmospheric, oceanographic, and topographic features of the IO that control plastic distribution, such as reversing wind directions due to the monsoon, fronts, and upwelling regions. We identify hotspots of possible plastic accumulation in the IO, which differ between the two hemispheres. In the southern IO, plastics accumulate in a garbage patch in the subtropical gyre. However, this garbage patch is not well defined, and plastics may leak into the southern Atlantic or the Pacific Ocean. There is no subtropical gyre and associated garbage in the northern IO due to the presence of landmasses. Instead, the majority of buoyant plastics most likely end up on coastlines. Finally, we identify the vast knowledge gaps concerning plastics in the IO and point to the most pressing topics for future investigation.

Introduction The Profile of Mood States is one of the most widely used instruments to assess mood states. It is a rapid and economic method of assessing transient affective states (McNair et al. 2003) and it has been translated and validated to several languages including Portuguese. In our country we have several versions, with different factorial structures and number of items. The scale presents a list of feelings and emotions (adjectives) that people commonly experience. With university students, we have used a version composed of 36 items that evaluates three factors, with good validity and reliability: Depression, Anxiety/Hostility and Positive Affect (Amaral et al. 2013). However, to be included in digital apps that in addition to ecological momentary assessment parameters require a weekly or even daily assessment of mood states, this version has little usability. Objectives To develop a shorter version of the POMS-36 based on Exploratory Factor Analysis and to analyse its construct validity using Confirmatory Factor Analysis in a sample of Portuguese college students. Methods 765 students (69.2% females; mean age=22.09±2.433; range: 17-26) fill in the POMS-36 and the Perceived Stress Scale (Amaral et al. 2014). The total sample was randomly divided in two sub-samples. Sample A (N=380) was used to EFA and sample B (N=385) was used to CFA. Results Through EFA (with varimax rotation and extracting three factors), the four items with the highest loadings in their respective factor were selected. Then, the CFA, carried out with the AMOS, revealed that this three-factor model, with two pairs of correlated errors, indicated a good fit (X2/df= 4.6010; CFI =.9561; GFI =.9406; TLI=.9559; RMSEA=.0687, p[rmsea=0.04]. The internal consistency analysis resulted in α (Cronbach alphas)

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is an international, world-class experiment aimed at exploring fundamental questions about the universe that are at the forefront of astrophysics and particle physics research. DUNE will study questions pertaining to the preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early universe, the dynamics of supernovae, the subtleties of neutrino interaction physics, and a number of beyond the Standard Model topics accessible in a powerful neutrino beam. A critical component of the DUNE physics program involves the study of changes in a powerful beam of neutrinos, i.e., neutrino oscillations, as the neutrinos propagate a long distance. The experiment consists of a near detector, sited close to the source of the beam, and a far detector, sited along the beam at a large distance. This document, the DUNE Near Detector Conceptual Design Report (CDR), describes the design of the DUNE near detector and the science program that drives the design and technology choices. The goals and requirements underlying the design, along with projected performance are given. It serves as a starting point for a more detailed design that will be described in future documents.

Biofilms can be characterized as a microorganisms community attached to a surface and enveloped by an extra polymeric substances complex array in a moist environment. It is known that the growth and formation way of the biofilm structure induces resistance to several microbial agents, making it impossible to disintegrate and eliminate these structures. These biofilms can settle in the vessels surface, pipes, thermoelectric cooling systems and so forth causing serious economic problems in the most diverse strategic sectors of a country such as nautical, industrial, energy. Search for substances capable of disturbing this formation is desired, since the formation of the biofilm is the crucial stage for the emergence of new organisms that will develop until the climax of the ecological succession with the arrival of macrofouling. These substances when isolated can be ideal inputs for the development of antifouling products and be incorporated into paints and coatings. Thus, the present study aim was synthesize antibacterial substances through chemical modification of natural substances, obtained from vegetable oils, specifically soybean oil (Glycine max (L.)). Selected substances and their variants for the synthesis were chosen based on/supported by studies that demonstrated the antifouling potential of some types of fatty acids and the efficacy of monoglycerides in combating the formation of biofilms. The following substances were synthesized: 9,10-dihydroxy octadecanoic acid; 9,10-dihydroxy octadecanoate; 9- octadecenoate 2,3-dihydroxypropanoyl; 2,3-dihydroxypropanoyl dodecanoate and 9,10-dihydroxy octadecanoate 2,3-dihydroxypropanoyl. For the synthesis of the substances, neutralization reactions using a catalyst base as well as esterification reactions with a polyalcohol (glycerol) and/or hydroxylation reactions by epoxidation were performed. To assess the antimicrobial activity, a rapid antibiogram assay was developed to observe the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa UCP0992 growth obtained from the Cultures Collection of Catholic University of Pernambuco – UNICAP, Brazil. The microorganism Pseudomonas aeruginosa used in this study is reported as a pioneer in the formation of resistant biofilms. Pseudomonas aeruginosa UCP0992 was seeded in Petri dishes containing medium LB then, antibiogram disks (Ø = 6 mm) each containing the synthesized substances to be tested were transferred to the plates and arranged in equidistant positions. Plates were incubated in an oven at 30 °C and the presence or absence of halos around each disc was verified after 24h, indicating whether or not the inhibition occurred. Any halo produced, regardless of its diameter, was considered as inhibition. All synthesized substances showed inhibition halo indicating potential use for application in the microorganisms inhibition and therefore the biofilm removal.

After a general analysis regarding the concept of coal “cleat system”, its genetic origin and practical applications to coalbed methane (CBM) commercial production and to CO2 geological sequestration projects, the authors have developed a method to answer, quickly and accurately in accordance with the industrial practice and needs, the following yet unanswered questions: (1) how to define the spatial orientation of the different classes of cleats presented in a coal seam and (2) how to determine the frequency of their connectivites. The new available and presented techniques to answer these questions have a strong computer based tool (geographic information system, GIS), able to build a complete georeferentiated database, which will allow to three-dimensionally locate the laboratory samples in the coalfield. It will also allow to better understand the coal cleat system and consequently to recognize the best pathways to gas flow through the coal seam. Such knowledge is considered crucial for understanding what is likely to be the most efficient opening of cleat network, then allowing the injection with the right spatial orientation, of pressurized fluids in order to directly drain the maximum amount of gas flow to a CBM exploitation well. The method is also applicable to the CO2 geological sequestration technologies and operations corresponding to the injection of CO2 sequestered from industrial plants in coal seams of abandoned coal mines or deep coal seams.

Abstract A search for a doubly-charged Higgs boson in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7 \ \mbox{TeV}$ is presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb−1, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The search is performed using events with three or more isolated charged leptons of any flavor, giving sensitivity to the decays of pair-produced triplet components Φ ++ Φ −−, and Φ ++ Φ − from associated production. No excess is observed compared to the background prediction, and upper limits at the 95 % confidence level are set on the Φ ++ production cross section, under specific assumptions on its branching fractions. Lower bounds on the Φ ++ mass are reported, providing significantly more stringent constraints than previously published limits.

We present a rare case of splenic tuberculosis in a 42-year old man with long-standing ankylosing spondylitis treated with adalimumab. We review the association between antitumor necrosis factor therapy and splenic tuberculosis. Our case, like many other reported cases, illustrates that the index of suspicion of tuberculosis in patients treated with anti TNF therapies must be high and emphasizes that this rare infection may occur even with negative tuberculosis screening before the initiation of therapy.

We evaluated the changes in the soil indicators pH in water, total OM and N, exchangeable cations, available P, K, Cu, and Zn, heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn), and faecal origin bacteria, between 2004 and 2007, as affected by sewage sludge (SS) application and mineral fertilisation in two field experiments with pastures. The treatments were the combinations of two types of pasture (natural and sown) with three fertilisation treatments (0, SS, inorganic fertilisers) in the experiment of Herdade do Revez (Haplic Luvisols and Haplic Leptosols), and four fertilisation treatments (0, SS, Liming+SS, and Liming+inorganic fertilisers) in Herdade da Criméia (Ferric Luvisols). The OM and available P contents were the chemical properties that significantly increased (P ≤ 5%) in the soil surface layer of both field experiments. The SS application also caused the highest significant increases in soil total N and exchangeable Mg contents in Herdade do Revez. Liming increased soil pH and exchangeable Mg, in Herdade da Criméia. The SS did not pollute the soils with heavy metals. The bacterial populations of faecal origin increased immediately after the SS application, but progressively decreased as time went by, reaching values similar to the controls.

In wide areas of Alentejo, soils under natural pasture have low fertility. Urban biosolids (UB) application introduce organic matter (O.M.) and nutrients in the soil, but it can also add heavy metals and bacteria of faecal origin. Thus, soil monitoring after the application of these residues is required. Organic with UB and mineral fertilisations were compared regarding their effects on some fertility and metallic and faecal pollution indicators of a soil derived from schists and grauwacks, in the 1st year of a field experiment with pastures. The experimental layout was a split-plot design, with six plots of 0.5 ha, referring to three fertilisation treatments (“nil”, mineral, and organic, with UB), in natural and sown pastures. The UB application was about 13 t/ha of a UB mixture from the Alvito and Vila Nova de Baronia plants, rich in O.M., N, and Ca. Mineral fertilisation included N, P, K, Zn, and Mo. Agriculture - Abstract
Sewage sludge (SS) application to soils reserved for pastures, still scarcely used in the country, often contributes to improve organic matter (O.M.) and some plant nutrient contents and to reduce the erosion risk, by increasing the soil vegetation cover. However, the occasional occurrence in SS of high levels of heavy metals, organic pollutant compounds, and pathogenic organisms restrict the SS rate to apply and makes indispensable their control in the soils to which they were applied. Also, the high nitrogen concentration often present in SS can inhibit the symbiotic rhizobium activity, with sequent damage in the leguminous species survival in grassland. In this work, dry matter yield, floristic composition, and copper (Cu) concentration in the plant biomass were evaluated, in two successive years of a field experiment with a sown pasture mixture, established in a poor Haplic Luvisol in the Mértola region. A biologically treated SS from Évora, rich in Cu, was applied. The evolution in the topsoil of the O.M., some plant nutrients, and aqua regia extractable Cu concentrations, was also examined for the same period. The magnitudes of the Rhizobium population (Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar trifolii) and of some indicators of faecal contamination (coliform bacteria and enterococcus) were evaluated too. Moreover, the evolution in the soil superficial layer of 11 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 13 organ chlorine pesticides, and 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) concentrations was examined for the 1st year following the SS application. The experiment, with a randomised block design, had three SS application rates (L0 = 0, L1 = 12, and L2 = 24 t/ha) as treatments and two replicates. The sown mixture consisted of Italian ryegrass, cocksfoot, five clover species, bird’s foot, and biserrula. Besides much higher biomass production, induced by higher soil available phosphorus concentration, the added SS neither polluted the soil with the analysed organic compounds, one year after application, nor increased the pathogenic microbial flora in two consecutive years. However, at the highest SS rate, soil aqua regia extractable Cu (0-10 cm depth) exceeded the maximum Portuguese legislated level in soil (100 mg kg-1), the rhizobium population was also reduced at the beginning of the 1st growing season, and legume percentage decreased at the 2nd growing season. The plant Cu concentrations were much lower than the maximum tolerable levels (25 mg kg-1) for the small ruminant’s diet, strongly suggesting that the SS application will not have damaging effects on the animal nutrition. Due to the undesirable effects of the L2 application rate, the L1 rate (12 t/ha) would be recommended for fertilizer purposes.

Background. Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) present abnormal respiratory mechanics, but its relation to ventilation variables at rest is not fully understood. Methods. We evaluated breathing pattern, thoracoabdominal motion, and ventilation in moderate and severe COPD patients by means of respiratory inductive plethysmograph and analysis of respiratory metabolism in semirecumbent position at rest. Diaphragmatic movement was measured using radiographs. Results. COPD patients showed an increase in mean inspiratory flow, minute ventilation, dead space ventilation, oxygen and carbon dioxide ventilatory equivalents and reduction of respiratory times and pulse oxymetry. These findings were more pronounced in severe COPD. Changes in ventilatory efficiency were correlated with decreased respiratory times, reduced diaphragmatic movement, and lower oxygen uptake. Conclusions. Rapid shallow breathing and reduced diaphragmatic movement have led to ventilatory inefficiency without changes in thoracoabdominal motion.
