Abstract

The neutron-rich rare isotope 190W is discussed as a candidate for a prolate-oblate transitional nucleus with maximum γ-softness. The collectivity of this isotope is assessed for the first time by the measurement of the reduced E2 transition probability of its first 2+ state to the ground state. The experiment employed the FAst TIming Array (FATIMA), comprised of 36 LaBr3(Ce) scintillators, which was part of the DESPEC setup at GSI, Darmstadt. The 41+ and 21+ states of 190W were populated subsequently to the decay of its 127(12) μs isomeric Jπ=10− state. The mean lifetime of the 21+ state was determined to be τ=274(28) ps, which corresponds to a B(E2;21+→01+) value of 95(10) W.u. The results motivated a revision of previous calculations within an energy-density functional-based interacting boson model-2 approach, yielding E2 transition properties and spectroscopic quadrupole moments for tungsten isotopes. From comparison to theory, the new data suggest that 190W is at the transition from prolate to oblate structure along the W isotopic chain, which had previously been discussed as a nuclear shape-phase transition.

Abstract

Reduced transition probabilities have been extracted between excited, yrast states in the N=Z+2 nucleus 94Pd. The transitions of interest were observed following decays of the Iπ=14+, Ex=2129-keV isomeric state, which was populated following the projectile fragmentation of a 124Xe primary beam at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung accelerator facility as part of FAIR Phase-0. Experimental information regarding the reduced E2 transition strengths for the decays of the yrast 8+ and 6+ states was determined following isomer-delayed Eγ1−Eγ2−△T2,1 coincidence method, using the LaBr3(Ce)-based FATIMA fast-timing coincidence gamma-ray array, which allowed direct determination of lifetimes of states in 94Pd using the Generalized Centroid Difference (GCD) method. The experimental value for the half-life of the yrast 8+ state of 755(106) ps results in a reduced transition probability of B(E2:8→+6+) = 205−25+34 e2fm4, which enables a precise verification of shell-model calculations for this unique system, lying directly between the N=Z line and the N=50 neutron shell closure. The determined B(E2) value provides an insight into the purity of (g9/2)n configurations in competition with admixtures from excitations between the (lower) N=3pf and (higher) N=4gds orbitals for the first time. The results indicate weak collectivity expected for near-zero quadrupole deformation and an increasing importance of the T=0 proton-neutron interaction at N=48.

3. First characterisation and conservation needs of a large maternity colony of lesser horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus hipposideros) in Aljezur, Portugal

Abstract

A new maternity colony of lesser horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus hipposideros) was found and described in an abandoned building in Aljezur, Portugal. Between June 25 and July 4, 2022, we conducted emergence and juvenile counts, took light intensity measurements during emergence times and evaluated microclimatic conditions inside the roost, namely temperature and relative humidity. Moreover, we took ultrasound recordings in the open and performed transects to locate foraging areas and commuting corridors. We found the colony amounted to at least 501 individuals (371 adults and 130 juveniles), currently the largest known in Portugal and one of the biggest in Europe. Sixteen matching echolocation calls were recorded away from the colony near a water reservoir, a probable foraging area together with the Vale da Telha valley connecting the roost to the water body, which may also serve as a commuting corridor. Considering the threatened conservation status of the lesser horseshoe bat, the large colony size and its lack of protection, we proposed several conservation measures aimed at preserving the colony. We hope our recommendations will be included in the management plan currently being prepared for the Natura 2000 site Costa Sudoeste. Following up on this research, a radio-tracking study would definitively confirm the bats’ movements and foraging grounds.

Abstract

This work aims at presenting an alternative approach to the long standing problem of the B(E2) values in Sn isotopes in the vicinity of the N=Z double-magic nucleus 100Sn, until now predominantly measured with relativistic and intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation reactions. The direct measurement of the lifetime of low-lying excited states in odd-even Sn isotopes provides a new and precise guidance for the theoretical description of the nuclear structure in this region. Lifetime measurements have been performed in 105Sn for the first time with the coincidence Recoil Distance Doppler Shift technique. The lifetime results for the 7/21+ first excited state and the 11/21+ state, 2+(104Sn) ⊗ν1g7/2 multiplet member, are discussed in comparison with state-of-the-art shell model and mean field calculations, highlighting the crucial contribution of proton excitation across the core of 100Sn. The reduced transition probability B(E2) of the 11/21+ core-coupled state points out an enhanced staggering with respect to the B(E2; 21+→01+) in the even-mass 104Sn and 106Sn isotopes.

Abstract

The first low-energy Coulomb-excitation measurement of the radioactive, semi-magic, two proton-hole nucleus 206Hg, was performed at CERN's recently-commissioned HIE-ISOLDE facility. Two γ rays depopulating low-lying states in 206Hg were observed. From the data, a reduced transition strength B(E2;21+→01+)=4.4(6) W.u. was determined, the first such value for an N=126 nucleus south of 208Pb, which is found to be slightly lower than that predicted by shell-model calculations. In addition, a collective octupole state was identified at an excitation energy of 2705 keV, for which a reduced B(E3) transition probability of 30−13+10 W.u. was extracted. These results are crucial for understanding both quadrupole and octupole collectivity in the vicinity of the heaviest doubly-magic nucleus 208Pb, and for benchmarking a number of theoretical approaches in this key region. This is of particular importance given the paucity of data on transition strengths in this region, which could be used, in principle, to test calculations relevant to the astrophysical r-process.

Abstract

The nucleus 212Po has been produced through the fragmentation of a 238U primary beam at 1 GeV/nucleon at GSI, separated with the FRagment Separator, FRS, and studied via isomer γ-decay spectroscopy with the RISING setup. Two delayed previously unknown γ rays have been observed. One has been attributed to the E3 decay of a 21− isomeric state feeding the α-emitting 45-s (18+) high-spin isomer. The other γ-ray line has been assigned to the decay of a higher-lying 23+ metastable state. These are the first observations of high-spin states above the 212Po (18+) isomer, by virtue of the selectivity obtained via ion-by-ion identification of 238U fragmentation products. Comparison with shell-model calculations points to shortfalls in the nuclear interactions involving high-j proton and neutron orbitals, to which the region around Z∼100 is sensitive.

Abstract

In a high-energy fragmentation experiment at GSI an I=π(6+) isomer and its γ-decay are identified in 102Sn, the two-neutron neighbour of the doubly-magic 100Sn. Its half-life is measured to be T=1/2367(11) ns. The possible existence of further isomers is discussed in the framework of large-scale shell model (LSSM) calculations including up to five particle-hole excitations of the 100Sn core. From the precise B(E2; 6+→4+) strength and the recently remeasured value for B(E2; 8+→6+) in the two-proton hole neighbour 98Cd effective E2 polarization charges for protons and neutrons were inferred including LSSM corrections within the full N=4 0ħω space. The results are discussed in comparison to predicted and empirically determined effective operators.

Abstract

Gamow-Teller β decay is forbidden if the number of nodes in the radial wave functions of the initial and final states is different. This Δn=0 requirement plays a major role in the β decay of heavy neutron-rich nuclei, affecting the nucleosynthesis through the increased half-lives of nuclei on the astrophysical r-process pathway below both Z=50 (for N>82) and Z=82 (for N>126). The level of forbiddenness of the Δn=1ν1g9/2→π0g7/2 transition has been investigated from the β− decay of the ground state of 207Hg into the single-proton-hole nucleus 207Tl in an experiment at the ISOLDE Decay Station. From statistical observational limits on possible γ-ray transitions depopulating the π0g7/2−1 state in 207Tl, an upper limit of 3.9×10−3% was obtained for the probability of this decay, corresponding to log⁡ft>8.8 within a 95% confidence limit. This is the most stringent test of the Δn=0 selection rule to date.

Abstract

The neutron-rich 213Pb isotope was produced in the fragmentation of a primary 1 GeV A 238U beam, separated in FRS in mass and atomic number, and then implanted for isomer decay γ-ray spectroscopy with the RISING setup at GSI. A newly observed isomer and its measured decay properties indicate that states in 213Pb are characterized by the seniority quantum number that counts the nucleons not in pairs coupled to angular momentum J=0. The conservation of seniority is a consequence of a geometric phase associated with particle-hole conjugation, which becomes observable in semi-magic nuclei where nucleons half-fill the valence shell. The γ-ray spectroscopic observables in 213Pb are thus found to be driven by two mechanisms, particle-hole conjugation and seniority conservation, which are intertwined through a Berry phase.

Abstract

The γ-ray emission from the nuclei 62,64Fe following Coulomb excitation at bombarding energy of 400-440 AMeV was measured with special focus on E1 transitions in the energy region 4-8 MeV. The unstable neutron-rich nuclei 62,64Fe were produced at the FAIR-GSI laboratories and selected with the FRS spectrometer. The γ decay was detected with AGATA. From the measured γ-ray spectra the summed E1 strength is extracted and compared to microscopic quasi-particle phonon model calculations. The trend of the E1 strength with increasing neutron number is found to be fairly well reproduced with calculations that assume a rather complex structure of the 1− states (three-phonon states) inducing a strong fragmentation of the E1 nuclear response below the neutron binding energy.

Abstract

We report on the measurement of new low-lying states in the neutron-rich 81,82,83,84Zn nuclei via in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy. These include the 41+→21+ transition in 82Zn, the 21+→0g.s.+ and 41+→21+ transitions in 84Zn, and low-lying states in 81,83Zn were observed for the first time. The reduced E(21+) energies and increased E(41+)/E(2+1) ratios at N=52, 54 compared to those in 80Zn attest that the magicity is confined to the neutron number N=50 only. The deduced level schemes are compared to three state-of-the-art shell model calculations and a good agreement is observed with all three calculations. The newly observed 2+ and 4+ levels in 84Zn suggest the onset of deformation towards heavier Zn isotopes, which has been incorporated by taking into account the upper sdg orbitals in the Ni78-II and the PFSDG-U models.

Abstract

The first evidence for β-delayed proton emission from the 16+ spin gap isomer in 96Cd is presented. The data were obtained from the Rare Isotope Beam Factory, at the RIKEN Nishina Center, using the BigRIPS spectrometer and the EURICA decay station. βp branching ratios for the ground state and 16+ isomer have been extracted along with more precise lifetimes for these states and the lifetime for the ground state decay of 95Cd. Large scale shell model (LSSM) calculations have been performed and WKB estimates made for ℓ=0,2,4 proton emission from three resonance-like states in 96Ag, that are populated by the β decay of the isomer, and the results compared to the new data. The calculations suggest that ℓ=2 proton emission from the resonance states, which reside ∼5 MeV above the proton separation energy, dominates the proton decay. The results highlight the importance of core-excited wavefunction components for the 16+ state.

Abstract

Electric quadrupole matrix elements, Mp, for the Jπ=2+→0+, ΔT=0, T=1 transitions across the A=46 isobaric multiplet 46Cr-46V-46Ti have been measured at GSI with the FRS-LYCCA-AGATA setup. This allows direct insight into the isospin purity of the states of interest by testing the linearity of Mp with respect to Tz. Pairs of nuclei in the T=1 triplet were studied using identical reaction mechanisms in order to control systematic errors. The Mp values were obtained with two different methodologies: (i) a relativistic Coulomb excitation experiment was performed for 46Cr and 46Ti; (ii) a “stretched target” technique was adopted here, for the first time, for lifetime measurements in 46V and 46Ti. A constant value of Mp across the triplet has been observed. Shell-model calculations performed within the fp shell fail to reproduce this unexpected trend, pointing towards the need of a wider valence space. This result is confirmed by the good agreement with experimental data achieved with an interaction which allows excitations from the underlying sd shell. A test of the linearity rule for all published data on complete T=1 isospin triplets is presented.

Abstract

The article the influence of changes of combustion gas temperature during flow around of horizontal cylinder on local Nu number was presented. In order to test an influence of effect waste gas temperature cycle of experimental investigations were conducted. Experimental tests were carried out on a properly designed measuring cylinder furnished with a number of thermocouples embedded along the cylinder perimeter. The cylinder was made from stainless steel of known thermal conductivity, and was cooled on the outer side through a water cooling system. The cylinder was placed horizontally in a heating chamber equipped with an axially positioned gas burner fired with natural gas. Gas and air feeds were regulated with control valves, based on combustion gas analyzer data.

Abstract

Der Aufschluß in Usch liegt am Südrand des Thorn-Eberswalder Urstromtales zwischen der Frankfurter Staffel und dem Pommerschen Stadium. Die rund 50 m mächtige Sedimentfolge wird aus vier Geschiebemergelbänken mit zwischengeschalteten glazifluvialen Sanden gebildet. Neben Geschiebeeinregelungsmessungen, granulometrischen Analysen und der Bestimmung des Karbonatgehaltes liegt der Schwerpunkt der Untersuchungen in den petrographischen Analysen der Kiesanteile der Geschiebemergel in der Fraktion 4 - 12,5 mm und in der Leitgeschiebebestimmung. Beide Methoden geben Erkenntnisse über Eisfließrichtungen im Inlandeis. Der oberste Geschiebemergel (Kolmarer Staffel) enthält viel ostbaltisches Material mit Åland-Graniten, vielen paläozoischen Kalksteinen und relativ vielen devonischen Dolomiten. Der zweite Gechiebemergel (Brandenburger-Frankfurter Stadium) enthält im Vergleich dazu weniger ostbaltisches Material und weniger paläozoische Kalke, dagegen nimmt der Feuerstein-Anteil etwas zu, was ebenfalls auf ein weiter westlich gelegenes Herkunftsgebiet hinweist. Der dritte Geschiebemergel hat saalezeitliches Alter; die zahlreichen Dolomite sowie die sonstige Geschiebezusammensetzung weisen wieder auf ein ostbaltisches Herkunftsgebiet hin, das typisch für warthezeitliche Glazialablagerungen ist. Der unterste Geschiebemergel mit Geschieben aus Dalarna und Småland läßt auf einen Eistransport aus Norden schließen. Diese Moräne ist wahrscheinlich ebenfalls saalezeitlich, ein elsterzeitliches Alter kann jedoch nicht völlig ausgeschlossen werden.

Abstract

Direct lifetime measurements via gamma -gamma coincidences using a fast timing detector array consisting of LaBr3(Ce) scintillators has been applied to determine the lifetime of low-lying states in the semimagic (N = 50) nucleus Ru-94. The experiment was carried out as the first in a series of "FAIR-0" experiments with the DESPEC experimental setup at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR). Excited states in Ru-94 were populated primarily via the beta-delayed proton emission of Pd-95 nuclei, produced in the projectile fragmentation of an 850 MeV/nucleon Xe-124 beam impinging on a 4 g/cm(2) Be-9 target. While the deduced E2 strength for the 2(+) -> 0(+) transition in the yrast cascade follows the expected behavior for conserved seniority symmetry, the intermediate 4(+) -> 2(+) transition exhibits a drastic enhancement of transition strength in comparison with pure-seniority model predictions as well as standard shell model predictions in the f pg proton hole space with respect to doubly magic Sn-100. The anomalous behavior is ascribed to a subtle interference between the wave function of the lowest seniority v = 2, I-pi = 4(+) state and that of a close-lying v = 4 state that exhibits partial dynamic symmetry. In addition, the observed strongly prohibitive 6(+) -> 4(+) transition can be attributed to the same mechanism but with a destructive interference. It is noted that such effects may provide stringent tests of the nucleon-nucleon interactions employed in state-of-the-art theoretical model calculations.

Abstract

Low-lying states of Cd-98 have been populated by the two-nucleon removal reaction (In-100, Cd-98+gamma) and studied using in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN. Two new gamma transitions were identified and assigned as decays from a previously unknown state. This state is suggested to be based on a pi 1g(/9/2)(-1)2p(1/2)(-2) configuration with J(pi) = 5(-). The present observation extends the systematics of the excitation energies of the first 5(-) state in N = 50 isotones toward Sn-100. The determined energy of the 5(- )state in Cd-98 continues a smooth trend along the N = 50 isotones. The systematics are compared with shell-model calculations in different model spaces. Good agreement is achieved when considering a model space consisting of the pi(1f(5/2), 2p(3/2), 2p(1/2), 1g(9/2)) orbitals. The calculations with a smaller model space omitting the orbitals below the Z = 38 subshell could not reproduce the experimental energy difference between the ground and first 5(-) states in N = 50 isotones, because proton excitations across Z = 38 subshell yield a large amount of correlation energy that lowers the ground states. This Δn=0 requirement plays a major role in the β decay of heavy neutron-rich nuclei, affecting the nucleosynthesis through the increased half-lives of nuclei on the astrophysical r-process pathway below both Z=50 (for N>82) and Z=82 (for N>126). The level of forbiddenness of the Δn=1ν1g →π0g transition has been investigated from the β decay of the ground state of Hg into the single-proton-hole nucleus Tl in an experiment at the ISOLDE Decay Station. From statistical observational limits on possible γ-ray transitions depopulating the π0g state in Tl, an upper limit of 3.9×10 % was obtained for the probability of this decay, corresponding to log⁡ft>8.8 within a 95% confidence limit. Abstract

We report on a study of the performance of the DEGAS-FATIMA Hybrid setup through GEANT4 simulations using accurate geometries of all detector components. We give details on the most compact detector configuration considered for this setup when maximizing efficiencies of both DEGAS (HpGe) and FATIMA (LaBr 3 (Ce)) systems with respect to a heavy-ion implantation and β -decay station. The possible configurations of the implantation system are discussed in terms of thickness variation and individual positioning of detector components. Abstract

The nature of academic institutions is inherently gendered. This is because higher education institutions (HEIs) do not operate in a void but, rather, are part and parcel of patriarchal social structures. This book offers a comprehensive presentation of the gendered and gendering academic career development. It explores various scholarly roles that academics face throughout their careers and how they are gendered in their nature. Abstract

A Geant4 simulation has been carried out in order to determine the B-detection efficiency of a rare isotope beam implantation setup, for decay spectroscopy experiments, comprising a number of Double Sided Silicon Strip Detectors (DSSSDs) and two plastic scintillation detectors placed upstream and downstream. The absolute efficiency for the emitted B-particle detection from radioactive fragments implanted in the DSSSDs using fast-timing plastic-scintillator detector, is calculated. The detection efficiency of the setup has been studied with two different distances between the Si layers and plastics. The requirement for the thickness of the Si detector layers and its implication on the B-detection effciency has been investigated for 1 mm and 300 um thickness of Si layers. The combined efficiency of DSSSD and plastic detectors were also simulated for two different thicknesses of the DSSSD.

Abstract

We report on new γ-ray spectroscopy results from β decays of In99 and Sn101. 30 new γ rays were observed following the β decay of In99, and inconsistencies in the literature with respect to the γ rays following the β decay of Sn101 were addressed with two confirmed cases and two new transitions. The experimental γ-ray energies, intensities, and coincidence relationships are discussed with shell model calculations, where theoretical β-decay branching ratios from the parent nuclei and γ-ray cascades of excited states from the daughter nuclei were combined to generate hypothetical βγ spectra and βγγ coincidence matrices. The most intense β-delayed γ-ray branches in both Cd99 and In101 were well reproduced with this approach, and several γ rays were assigned to new excited states based on their good agreement with shell model predictions.

Abstract

Twenty-one two-proton knockout (p; 3p) cross sections from neutron-rich nuclei at ~ 250 MeV/nucleon were measured. For the first time, the angular distribution of the three emitted protons were measured in coincidence with the tracker and hydrogen target MINOS, demonstrating that the (p; 3p) kinematics is consistent with two sequential proton-proton collisions within the projectile nucleus. Ratios of (p; 3p) over (p; 2p) inclusive cross sections follow the trend of other many-proton (neutron) removal reactions, further reinforcing the sequential nature of (p; 3p) in neutron-rich nuclei.

Abstract

Here we present new information on the shape evolution of the very neutron-rich ^{92,94}Se nuclei from an isomer-decay spectroscopy experiment at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN. High-resolution germanium detectors were used to identify delayed γ rays emitted following the decay of their isomers. New transitions are reported extending the previously known level schemes. The isomeric levels are interpreted as originating from high-K quasineutron states with an oblate deformation of β∼0.25, with the high-K state in ^{94}Se being metastable and K hindered. Following this, ^{94}Se is the lowest-mass neutron-rich nucleus known to date with such a substantial K hindrance. Furthermore, it is the first observation of an oblate K isomer in a deformed nucleus. This opens up the possibility for a new region of K isomers at low Z and at oblate deformation, involving the same neutron orbitals as the prolate orbitals within the classic Z∼72 deformed hafnium region. From an interpretation of the level scheme guided by theoretical calculations, an oblate deformation is also suggested for the ^{94}Se_{60} ground-state band.

Abstract

The β decay of 207Hg into the single-proton-hole nucleus 207Tl has been studied through γ-ray spectroscopy at the ISOLDE Decay Station (IDS) with the aim of identifying states resulting from coupling of the πs−11/2, πd−13/2, and πh−111/2 shell model orbitals to the collective octupole vibration. Twenty-two states were observed lying between 2.6 and 4.0 MeV, eleven of which were observed for the first time, and 78 new transitions were placed. Two octupole states (s1/2-coupled) are identified and three more states (d3/2-coupled) are tentatively assigned using spin-parity inferences, while further h11/2-coupled states may also have been observed for the first time. Comparisons are made with state-of-the-art large-scale shell model calculations and previous observations made in this region, and systematic underestimation of the energy of the octupole vibrational states is noted. We suggest that in order to resolve the difference in predicted energies for collective and noncollective t=1 states (t is the number of nucleons breaking the 208Pb core), the effect of t=2 mixing may be reduced for octupole-coupled states. The inclusion of mixing with t=0,2,3 excitations is necessary to replicate all t=1 state energies accurately.

Abstract

Chlorooganic xenobiotics (XBs) such as DDT, DDE, aldrin and dieldrin interfere with release of hormones from chorionic villi that are necessary for sustaining the normal course pregnancy: prostaglandins (PGs), oxytocin (OT), progesterone (P4) and estradiol (E2). Approximately 20 %–40 % of these hormones originate from the smooth chorion. The aim of current studies was to investigate effects of these XBs on synthesis and release of PGE2, PGF2α, OT, P4 and E2 from explants of smooth chorion of cattle, obtained during the120–150 and 151–180 day gestational period. Explants were incubated with DDT, DDE, aldrin or dieldrin at concentrations of 1 and 10 ng/mL for 24 h, and concentrations of PGE2, PGF2α, OT, P4 and E2 in post incubation medium and the relative abundances of COX-2, PTGES, AKR1B1, NP-I/OT, PAM, HSD3B, and CYP19A1 mRNA transcripts in tissue explants were determined. The XBs did not have effects on cell viability in explants (P > 0.05), however, there were effects on prostaglandins, OT and P4 secretion and relative abundance of mRNA transcript for genes encoding the main enzymes involved in synthesis of these hormones (P 0.05). In summary, XBs evaluated in the present study had effects on the pattern of prostaglandin secretion, and can increase OT and P4 release from smooth chorion explants. Because XBs inhibit hormonal action throughout the chorion, there is an increase in risk of abortions or premature births in animals.

Abstract

AGATA Collaboration, New physics opportunities are opening up by the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array, AGATA, as it evolves to the full 4π instrument. AGATA is a high-resolution γ-ray spectrometer, solely built from highly segmented high-purity Ge detectors, capable of measuring γ rays from a few tens of keV to beyond 10 MeV, with unprecedented efficiency, excellent position resolution for individual γ-ray interactions, and very high count-rate capability. Abstract

6 pags., 4 figs., The γ-ray emission from the nuclei Fe following Coulomb excitation at bombarding energy of 400-440 AMeV was measured with special focus on E1 transitions in the energy region 4-8 MeV. The unstable neutron-rich nuclei Fe were produced at the FAIR-GSI laboratories and selected with the FRS spectrometer. The γ decay was detected with AGATA. From the measured γ-ray spectra the summed E1 strength is extracted and compared to microscopic quasi-particle phonon model calculations. The trend of the E1 strength with increasing neutron number is found to be fairly well reproduced with calculations that assume a rather complex structure of the 1 states (three-phonon states) inducing a strong fragmentation of the E1 nuclear response below the neutron binding energy., This work was partially supported by INFN (Italy) and STFC (UK), the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet, VR 2010-147, 2011-5253, and 2016-3969), BMBF NuSTAR-AGATA 05P18RDFN9 and BMBF NuSTAR 05P18RDFN1. Abstract

International audience; A first performance test of the Coulomb excitation multipolarimetry (Coulex-multipolarimetry) method is presented. It is based on a $^{85}\hbox {Br}\,\pi p_{3/2}\rightarrow \pi p_{1/2}$ spin-flip experiment performed as part of the PreSPEC-AGATA campaign at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung (GSI). Via determination of background levels around the expected $^{85}\hbox {Br}$ excitations as well as measured $^{197}\hbox {Au}$ excitations, an upper limit for the M1 transition strength of the $1/2_1^-\rightarrow 3/2_\text {g.s.}^-$ transition in $^{85}\hbox {Br}$ and a lower beam time limit for upcoming experimental campaigns utilizing Coulex-multipolarimetry have been inferred. The impact of the use of AGATA in its anticipated $1\pi $ configuration on these estimates is deduced via Geant4 simulations.

Abstract

The performance of the novel HPGe-Cluster array DEGAS to be used at FAIR has been studied through GEANT4 simulations using accurate geometries of most of the detector components. The simulation framework has been tested by comparing experimental data of various detector setups. The study showed that the DEGAS system could provide a clear improvement of the photo-peak efficiency compared to the previous RISING array. In addition, the active BGO Back-catcher could greatly enhance the background suppression capability. The add-back analysis revealed that even at a γ multiplicity of six the sensitivity is improved by adding back the energy depositions of the neighboring Ge crystals.

Abstract

C4 photosynthesis has evolved repeatedly from the ancestral C3 state to generate a carbon concentrating mechanism that increases photosynthetic efficiency. This specialised form of photosynthesis is particularly common in the PACMAD clade of grasses, and is used by many of the world’s most productive crops. The C4 cycle is accomplished through cell-type specific accumulation of enzymes but cis-elements and transcription factors controlling C4 photosynthesis remain largely unknown. Using the NADP-Malic Enzyme (NADP-ME) gene as a model we aimed to better understand molecular mechanisms associated with the evolution of C4 photosynthesis. Two basic Helix-Loop-Helix (bHLH) transcription factors, ZmbHLH128 and ZmbHLH129, were shown to bind the C4NADP-ME promoter from maize. These proteins form heterodimers and ZmbHLH129 impairs trans-activation by ZmbHLH128. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays indicate that a pair of cis-elements separated by a seven base pair spacer synergistically bind either ZmbHLH128 or ZmbHLH129. This pair of cis-elements is found in both C3 and C4 species of the PACMAD clade. Our analysis is consistent with this cis-element pair originating from a single motif present in the ancestral C3 state. We conclude that C4 photosynthesis has co-opted an ancient C3 regulatory code built on G-box recognition by bHLH to regulate the NADP-ME gene. Abstract

In recent years, a series of investigations has been devoted to a possibility of using crystals based on CdTe with addition of magnesium (Mg), selenium (Se), or manganese (Mn) for X and gamma radiation detectors. In the literature there are contradictory data with respect to the segregation of Mg in (Cd,Mg)Te and Se in Cd(Te,Se) and to the possibility of obtaining materials with a homogeneous composition without grains and twins. We have wide technological possibilities of preparing crystals and investigating some of their properties. Thus, we performed crystallizations of (Cd,Mg)Te, Cd(Te,Se), (Cd,Mn)(Te,Se), and (Cd,Mn)Te compounds. The aim of our studies was to check whether any of the investigated materials may be easily obtained by the Low Pressure Bridgman (LPB) method in the form of large, homogeneous, high resistivity single crystals with as few as possible twins, subgrains, and tellurium inclusions. The crystallization processes were performed by using the LPB method. The elements used: Cd, Te, Mn, Mg, and Se were of the highest purity available at that time. In order to obtain reliable conclusions the crystallization processes were carried out under identical technological conditions. The details of our technological method and the results of the investigation of physical properties of the samples are presented below.

Abstract

Shand et al. -- 6 pags., 3 figs., tab. --Open Access funded by Creative Commons Atribution Licence 4.0, We report on the measurement of new low-lying states in the neutron-rich Zn nuclei via in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy. These include the 4 →2 transition in Zn, the 2 →0 and 4 →2 transitions in Zn, and low-lying states in Zn were observed for the first time. The reduced E(2 ) energies and increased E(4 )/E(2 ) ratios at N=52, 54 compared to those in Zn attest that the magicity is confined to the neutron number N=50 only. The deduced level schemes are compared to three state-of-the-art shell model calculations and a good agreement is observed with all three calculations. The newly observed 2 and 4 levels in Zn suggest the onset of deformation towards heavier Zn isotopes, which has been incorporated by taking into account the upper sdg orbitals in the Ni78-II and the PFSDG-U models., All UK authors are supported by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).
