Background Total proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) for ulcerative colitis (UC) can incur in several complications like pouchitis leading to the need of immunosuppressive therapy, hospitalization and pouch failure. Unlike non-operated UC patients, therapeutic goals are an unmet need in UC-IPAA patients and the impact of the histologic activity on the development of complications is unknown. The aim of the study was to assess the association between histology and the risk of long-term negative outcomes in UC subjects with IPAA. Methods This is a single-center, retrospective study which included UC adult patients with IPAA undergoing at least one pouchscopy with biopsies in the pouch body after ileostomy closure. Pouch biopsies were blindly reviewed by a gastrointestinal pathologist with expertise in IBD. Histologic disease remission was defined as a Pouchitis Disease Activity Index (PDAI) histology subscore £ 1. Negative outcomes were: IPAA related complications (acute or chronic pouchitis, hospitalization, pouch failure) and escalation of medical therapy (start of immunosuppressive or biologics). Both descriptive and inferential statistical analyses carried out Results A total of 66 patients were included (male n=37; 56,1%) of whom 40,9% (n=27) had histological activity at the baseline pouchscopy. The characteristics of the study population are represented in table 1. The median time of follow up was 38,5 months (range 12-151). During the study period, 27 patients (40,9%) developed acute pouchitis and 10 patients (15,2%) chronic pouchitis. Thirty-nine subjects (59,1%) required antibiotic therapy while 8 subjects required systemic steroids (12,1%). Furthermore, 15 patients (22,7%) started immunomodulatory therapy with either azathioprine or biologic agents. Six patients (9,1%) needed pouch-related hospitalization and 1 patients (1,5%) experienced pouch failure. Chronic pouchitis and the need of immunosuppressive/biology therapy was observed more frequently in patients with pouch histologic activity (29,6% vs. 5,1%, and 40,7% vs. 10,3%, respectively) (P Conclusion Histologic activity was associated with an increased risk of developing both acute and chronic pouchitis and with the need for immunosuppressive/biologic therapy. Future research will clarify whether histologic remission might be considered as a therapeutic target for UC-IPAA patients developing pouchitis.

In wide-field telescopes, relatively small misalignments in the optical system can cause large aberrations. The nominal system is normally designed to show a good optical performance over the whole field of view but, in presence of misalignments, the symmetry is broken and the aberrations increase towards the edge of the field. No new aberrations arise, but the known aberrations behave differently and originate multiple nodes, according to the Nodal Aberration Theory. The effects, in terms of image quality degradation, can be especially deleterious for wide-field imagers. This issue can be studied in detail by the ray-tracing programs that are normally adopted for the optical design. Nevertheless, these codes are not optimal for applications where a high execution speed is needed. Here, an application of PSF reconstruction for a wide-field telescope by using an integrated modeling approach is presented. Ray-tracing data are adopted as input to build a fully analytical model. The example of the VST telescope (1x1 deg field of view) is discussed as a case study.

Context. The existence of hot Jupiters is still not well understood. Two main channels are thought to be responsible for their current location: a smooth planet migration through the protoplanetary disk or the circularization of an initial highly eccentric orbit by tidal dissipation leading to a strong decrease in the semimajor axis. Different formation scenarios result in different observable effects, such as orbital parameters (obliquity and eccentricity) or frequency of planets at different stellar ages. Aims. In the context of the GAPS Young Objects project, we are carrying out a radial velocity survey with the aim of searching and characterizing young hot-Jupiter planets. Our purpose is to put constraints on evolutionary models and establish statistical properties, such as the frequency of these planets from a homogeneous sample. Methods. Since young stars are in general magnetically very active, we performed multi-band (visible and near-infrared) spectroscopy with simultaneous GIANO-B + HARPS-N (GIARPS) observing mode at TNG. This helps in dealing with stellar activity and distinguishing the nature of radial velocity variations: stellar activity will introduce a wavelength-dependent radial velocity amplitude, whereas a Keplerian signal is achromatic. As a pilot study, we present here the cases of two known hot Jupiters orbiting young stars: HD 285507 b and AD Leo b. Results. Our analysis of simultaneous high-precision GIARPS spectroscopic data confirms the Keplerian nature of the variation in the HD 285507 radial velocities and refines the orbital parameters of the hot Jupiter, obtaining an eccentricity consistent with a circular orbit. Instead, our analysis does not confirm the signal previously attributed to a planet orbiting AD Leo. Starting from our puzzling on-sky experience with the GIANO-TNG spectrometer we set up an infrared high resolution spectrometer in our laboratory and used this instrument to characterize the modal noise generated in fibers of different types (circular and octagonal) and sizes. Our experiment includes two conventional scrambling systems for fibers: a mechanical agitator and an optical double scrambler. We find that the strength of the modal noise primarily depends on how the fiber is illuminated. It dramatically increases when the fiber is under-illuminated, either in the near field or in the far field. The modal noise is similar in circular and octagonal fibers. The Fourier spectrum of the noise decreases exponentially with frequency; i.e., the modal noise is not white but favors broad spectral features. Using the optical double scrambler has no effect on modal noise. The mechanical agitator has effects that vary between different types of fibers and input illuminations. In some cases this agitator has virtually no effect. In other cases, it mitigates the modal noise, but flattens the noise spectrum in Fourier space; i.e., the mechanical agitator preferentially filters the broad spectral features. Our results show that modal noise is frustratingly insensitive to the use of octagonal fibers and optical double scramblers; i.e., the conventional systems used to improve the performances of spectrographs fed via unevenly illuminated fibers. Fiber agitation may help in some cases, but its effect has to be verified on a case-by-case basis. More generally, our results indicate that the design of the fiber link feeding a spectrograph should be coupled with laboratory measurements that reproduce, as closely as possible, the conditions expected at the telescope, 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics

Context. Stellar activity is currently challenging the detection of young planets via the radial velocity (RV) technique. Aims. We attempt to definitively discriminate the nature of the RV variations for the young active K5 star BD+20 1790, for which visible (VIS) RV measurements show divergent results on the existence of a substellar companion. Methods. We compare VIS data with high precision RVs in the near infrared (NIR) range by using the GIANO - B and IGRINS spectrographs. In addition, we present for the first time simultaneous VIS-NIR observations obtained with GIARPS (GIANO - B and HARPS - N) at Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG). Orbital RVs are achromatic, so the RV amplitude does not change at different wavelengths, while stellar activity induces wavelength-dependent RV variations, which are significantly reduced in the NIR range with respect to the VIS. Results. The NIR radial velocity measurements from GIANO - B and IGRINS show an average amplitude of about one quarter with respect to previously published VIS data, as expected when the RV jitter is due to stellar activity. Coeval multi-band photometry surprisingly shows larger amplitudes in the NIR range, explainable with a mixture of cool and hot spots in the same active region. Conclusions. In this work, the claimed massive planet around BD+20 1790 is ruled out by our data. We exploited the crucial role of multi- wavelength spectroscopy when observing young active stars: thanks to facilities like GIARPS that provide simultaneous observations, this method can reach its maximum potential., 12 pages, 7 figures

GIARPS (GIAno and haRPS) is a project devoted to have on the same focal station of the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG) both high resolution spectrographs, HARPS-N (VIS) and GIANO-B (NIR), working simultaneously. This could be considered the first and unique worldwide instrument providing cross-dispersed echelle spectroscopy at a resolution of 50,000 in the NIR range and 115,000 in the VIS and over in a wide spectral range (0.383-2.45 μm) in a single exposure. The science case is very broad, given the versatility of such an instrument and its large wavelength range. A number of outstanding science cases encompassing mainly extra-solar planet science starting from rocky planets search and hot Jupiters to atmosphere characterization can be considered. Furthermore both instruments can measure high precision radial velocities by means the simultaneous thorium technique (HARPS-N) and absorbing cell technique (GIANO-B) in a single exposure. Other science cases are also possible. GIARPS, as a brand new observing mode of the TNG started after the moving of GIANO-A (fiber fed spectrograph) from Nasmyth-A to Nasmyth-B where it was re-born as GIANO-B (no more fiber feed spectrograph). The official Commissioning finished on March 2017 and then it was offered to the community. Despite the work is not finished yet. In this paper we describe the preliminary scientific results obtained with GIANO-B and GIARPS observing mode with data taken during commissioning and first open time observations.

GIANO-B is the high resolution near-infrared (NIR) spectrograph of the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG), which started its regular operations in October 2017. Here we present GIANO-B Online Data Reduction Software (DRS) operating at the Telescope. GIANO-B Online DRS is a complete end-to-end solution for the spectrograph real-time data handling. The Online DRS provides management, processing and archival of GIANO-B scientific and calibration data. Once the instrument control software acquires the exposure ramp segments from the detector, the DRS ensures the complete data flow until the final data products are ingested into the science archive. A part of the Online DRS is GOFIO software, which performs the reduction process from ramp-processed 2D spectra to extracted and calibrated 1D spectra. A User Interface (UI) developed as a part of the Online DRS provides basic information on the final reduced data, thus allowing the observer to take decisions in real-time during the night and adjust the observational strategy as needed.

The NIR echelle spectrograph GIANO-B at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo is equipped with a fully automated online DRS: part of this pipeline is the GOFIO reduction software, that processes all the observed data, from the calibrations to the nodding or stare images. GOFIO reduction process includes bad pixel and cosmic removal, flat-field and blaze correction, optimal extraction, wavelength calibration, nodding or stare group processing. An offline version of GOFIO will allow the users to adapt the reduction to their needs, and to compute the radial velocity using telluric lines as a reference system. GIANO-B may be used simultaneously with HARPS-N in the GIARPS observing mode to obtain high-resolution spectra in a wide wavelength range (383-2450 nm) with a single acquisition. In this framework, GOFIO, as part of the online DRS, provides fast and reliable data reduction during the night, in order to compare the infrared and visible observations on the fly.

The search for undiscovered planets outside the solar system is a scientific topic that is rapidly spreading into the astrophysical and engineering communities. In this framework, the design of an innovative payload to detect exoplanets from a nano-sized space platform, like a 3U cubesat, is presented. The selected detection method is photometric transit, and the payload aims to detect flux decrements down to ~0.01% with a precision of 12 ppm. The payload design is also aimed at false positive recognition. The solution consists of a four-facets pyramid on the top of the payload, to allow for measurement redundancy and low-resolution spectral dispersion of the star images. The innovative concept is the use of a small and cheap platform for a relevant astronomical mission. The faintest observable target star has V-magnitude equal to 3.38. Despite missions aimed at ultra-precise photometry from microsatellites (e.g., MOST, BRITE), the transit of exoplanets orbiting very bright stars has not yet been surveyed photometrically from space, since any observation from a small/medium sized (30 cm optical aperture) telescope would saturate the detector. This cubesat mission can provide these missing measurements. This work is set up as a demonstrative project to verify the feasibility of the payload concept.

SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter) will be a unique spectroscopic facility for the ESO-NTT 3.5-m telescope in La Silla (Chile), able to cover the optical/NIR band (350-1750 nm). The design foresees a high-efficiency spectrograph with a resolution-slit product of ~4,500, capable of simultaneously observing the complete spectral range 350 - 1750 nm with a good sensitivity, with light imaging capabilities in the visible band. The Multi-Object Optical and Near-Infrared Spectrograph (MOONS) shall be installed at one of the Very Large Telescopes (VLT) at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Paranal Chile. The instrument is being designed and built by an international consortium on behalf of ESO. The design is based on a three arms configuration, RI, YJ and H band, where RI and H have two possible resolutions. To achieve this goal it will be necessary to implement a sliding mechanism changing the dispersers, the filters and the cross dispersion prisms. This article describes the cryogenic exchanger mechanism that is under realization and the preliminary mechanical and optical tests that we have done at the cryogenic facility of Arcetri observatory of Florence. Parts of these test are based on interferometric measurements of the optics to study the behaviour of the mechanical supporting structure, and part are based on the cryogenic sliding system that will be used to move approximately 200 Kg of mass for 350 mm of travel range. The cryogenic sliding system, rails, screws, motors, is based on commercial components as the position measurement device that is based on commercial potentiometers. The results of the tests and performances at cryogenic temperature are reported in this paper.

This article describes the works we are doing for modifying the interface between the high resolution infrared spectrograph GIANO (0.97-2.4 micron) and the TNG telescope, passing from a fiber feed configuration to the original design of a direct light-feeding from the telescope to the spectrograph. So doing the IR spectrograph, GIANO, will work in parallel to HARPS-N spectrometer (0.38-0.70 micron), the visible high resolution spectrograph, thanks to a new telescope interface based on a dichroic window that simultaneously feeds the two instrumentes: this is GIARPS (GIAno and haRPS). The scientific aims of this project are to improve the radial velocity accuracy achievable with GIANO, down to a goal of 1 m/s, the value necessary to detect Earth-mass planets on habitable orbits around late-M stars, to implement simultaneous observations with Harps-N and GIANO optimizing the study of planets around cool stars. The very broad wavelengths range is particularly important to discriminate false radial velocity signals caused by stellar activity. We therefore include several absorption cells with different mixtures of gases and a stabilized Fabry Perot cavity, necessary to have absorption lines over the 0.97-2.4 microns range covered by GIANO. The commissioning of GIARPS is scheduled by the end of 2016.

Aims Determining the intensity of lines and continuum airglow emission in the H-band is important for the design of faint-object infrared spectrographs. Existing spectra at low/medium resolution cannot disentangle the true sky-continuum from instrumental effects (e.g. diffuse light in the wings of strong lines). We aim to obtain, for the first time, a high resolution infrared spectrum deep enough to set significant constraints on the continuum emission between the lines in the H-band. Methods During the second commissioning run of the GIANO high-resolution infrared spectrograph at La Palma Observatory, we pointed the instrument directly to the sky and obtained a deep spectrum that extends from 0.97 to 2.4 micron. Results The spectrum shows about 1500 emission lines, a factor of two more than in previous works. Of these, 80% are identified as OH transitions; half of these are from highly excited molecules (hot-OH component) that are not included in the OH airglow emission models normally used for astronomical applications. The other lines are attributable to O2 or unidentified. Several of the faint lines are in spectral regions that were previously believed to be free of line emission. The continuum in the H-band is marginally detected at a level of about 300 photons/m^2/s/arcsec^2/micron, equivalent to 20.1 AB-mag/arcsec^2. The observed spectrum and the list of observed sky-lines are published in electronic format. Conclusions Our measurements indicate that the sky continuum in the H-band could be even darker than previously believed. However, the myriad of airglow emission lines severely limits the spectral ranges where very low background can be effectively achieved with low/medium resolution spectrographs. We identify a few spectral bands that could still remain quite dark at the resolving power foreseen for VLT-MOONS (R ~6,600)., 7 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Astronomy & Astrophysics

This work consists in the design of an innovative payload instrument onboard of a cubesat. The instrument scope is to detect extrasolar planets; the ultimate goal would be to reveal Earth-like planets around Sun-like stars. The innovative aspect of this instruments is the improvement in the false positive recognition through a simple optical design that involves a four facet round based pyramid.

Aims: The Scutum complex in the inner disk of the Galaxy has a number of young star clusters dominated by red supergiants that are heavily obscured by dust extinction and observable only at infrared wavelengths. These clusters are important tracers of the recent star formation and chemical enrichment history in the inner Galaxy. Methods: During the technical commissioning and as a first science verification of the GIANO spectrograph at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, we secured high-resolution (R ≃ 50 000) near-infrared spectra of five red supergiants in the young Scutum cluster RSGC3. Results: Taking advantage of the full YJHK spectral coverage of GIANO in a single exposure, we were able to measure several tens of atomic and molecular lines that were suitable for determining chemical abundances. By means of spectral synthesis and line equivalent width measurements, we obtained abundances of Fe and iron-peak elements such as Ni, Cr, and Cu, alpha (O, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti), other light elements (C, N, F, Na, Al, and Sc), and some s-process elements (Y, Sr). We found average half-solar iron abundances and solar-scaled [X/Fe] abundance patterns for most of the elements, consistent with a thin-disk chemistry. We found depletion of [C/Fe] and enhancement of [N/Fe], consistent with standard CN burning, and low 12C /13C abundance ratios (between 9 and 11), which require extra-mixing processes in the stellar interiors during the post-main sequence evolution. We also found local standard of rest VLSR = 106 km s-1 and heliocentric Vhel = 90 km s-1 radial velocities with a dispersion of 2.3 km s-1. Conclusions: The inferred radial velocities, abundances, and abundance patterns of RSGC3 are very similar to those previously measured in the other two young clusters of the Scutum complex, RSGC1 and RSGC2, suggesting a common kinematics and chemistry within the Scutum complex.

Giano is a Cryogenic Spectrograph located in T.N.G. (Spain) and commisioned in 2013. It works in the range 950-2500 nm with a resolving power of 50000. This instrument was designed and built for direct feeding from the telescope [2]. However, due to constraints imposed on the telescope interfacing during the pre-commissioning phase, it had to be positioned on the rotating building, far from the telescope focus. Therefore, a new interface to the telescope, based on IR-transmitting ZBLAN fibers with 85\mu m core, was developed.Originally designed to work directly at the $f/11$ nasmyth focus of the telescope, in 2011 it has decided to use a fiber to feed it. The beam from the telescope is focused on a double fiber boundle by a Preslit Optical Bench attached to the Nasmith A interface of the telescope. This Optical Bench contains the fiber feeding system and other important features as a guiding system, a fiber viewer, a fiber feed calibration lamp and a nodding facility between the two fibers. The use of two fibers allow us to have in the echellogram two spectrograms side by side in the same acquisition: one of the star and the other of the sky or simultaneously to have the star and a calibration lamp. Before entering the cryostat the light from the fiber is collectd by a second Preslit Optical Bench attached directly to the Giano cryostat: on this bench the correct f-number to illuminate the cold stop is generated and on the same bench is placed an image slicer to increase the efficiency of the system., Comment: 21 pages, 24 figures, 3 tables. The problem of modal noise is often encountered in high resolution spectrograph and in high speed communication fiber links. The experimental approach proved to be a deep mean of investigation of this problem, and it is a good starting point to try to understand and attenuate this source of noise. Through the observation of the spectrum image of known light source, and the comparison between a set of spectrum images, the modal noise has been clearly highlighted.

This paper presents the latest optical design for the MOONS triple-arm spectrographs. MOONS will be a Multi-Object Optical and Near-infrared Spectrograph and will be installed on one of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Very Large Telescopes (VLT).
