1. Comparison of GRUAN data products for Meisei iMS-100 and Vaisala RS92 radiosondes at Tateno, Japan

Abstract: A total of 99 dual soundings with Meisei iMS-100 radiosonde and Vaisala RS92 radiosondes were carried out at the Aerological Observatory of the Japan Meteorological Agency, known as Tateno (36.06∘ N, 140.13∘ E, 25.2 m; the World Meteorological Organization, WMO, station number 47646), from September 2017 to January 2020. Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) Reference Upper-Air Network (GRUAN) data products (GDPs) from both sets of radiosonde data for 59 flights were subsequently created using a documented processing programme along with the provision of optimal estimates for measurement uncertainty. Differences in radiosonde performance were then quantified using these GDPs. For daytime observations, the iMS-100 temperature is around 0.5 K cooler than RS92-GDP in the stratosphere, with significant differences in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere in consideration of combined uncertainties. For nighttime observations, the difference is around −0.1 K, and data are mostly in agreement. For relative humidity (RH), iMS-100 is around 1 % RH–2 % RH higher in the troposphere and 1 % RH smaller in the stratosphere than RS92, but both GDPs are in agreement for most of the profile. The mean pressure difference is ≤0.1 hPa, the wind speed difference is from −0.04 to +0.14 m s−1, the wind direction difference is ≤6.4∘, and the root mean square vector difference (RMSVD) for wind is ≤1.04 m s−1.

2. Use of automatic radiosonde launchers to measure temperature and humidity profiles from the GRUAN perspective

Abstract: In the last two decades, technological progress has not only seen improvements to the quality of atmospheric upper-air observations but also provided the opportunity to design and implement automated systems able to replace measurement procedures typically performed manually. Radiosoundings, which remain one of the primary data sources for weather and climate applications, are still largely performed around the world manually, although increasingly fully automated upper-air observations are used, from urban areas to the remotest locations, which minimize operating costs and challenges in performing radiosounding launches. This analysis presents a first step to demonstrating the reliability of the automatic radiosonde launchers (ARLs) provided by Vaisala, Meteomodem and Meisei. The metadata and datasets collected by a few existing ARLs operated by the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) Reference Upper-Air Network (GRUAN) certified or candidate sites (Sodankylä, Payerne, Trappes, Potenza) have been investigated and a comparative analysis of the technical performance (i.e. manual versus ARL) is reported. The performance of ARLs is evaluated as being similar or superior to those achieved with the traditional manual launches in terms of percentage of successful launches, balloon burst and ascent speed. For both temperature and relative humidity, the ground-check comparisons showed a negative bias of a few tenths of a degree and % RH, respectively. Two datasets of parallel soundings between manual and ARL-based measurements, using identical sonde models, provided by Sodankylä and Faa'a stations, showed mean differences between the ARL and manual launches smaller than ±0.2 K up to 10 hPa for the temperature profiles. For relative humidity, differences were smaller than 1 % RH for the Sodankylä dataset up to 300 hPa, while they were smaller than 0.7 % RH for Faa'a station. Finally, the observation-minus-background (O–B) mean and root mean square (rms) statistics for German RS92 and RS41 stations, which operate a mix of manual and ARL launch protocols, calculated using the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) forecast model, are very similar, although RS41 shows larger rms(O–B) differences for ARL stations, in particular for temperature and wind. A discussion of the potential next steps proposed by GRUAN community and other parties is provided, with the aim to lay the basis for the elaboration of a strategy to fully demonstrate the value of ARLs and guarantee that the provided products are traceable and suitable for the creation of GRUAN data products.

Abstract: A total of 87 dual flights of Meisei RS-11G radiosondes and Vaisala RS92-SGP radiosondes were carried out at the Aerological Observatory of the Japan Meteorological Agency (36.06∘ N, 140.13∘ E, 25.2 m) from April 2015 to June 2017. Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) Reference Upper-Air Network (GRUAN) data products from both sets of radiosonde data for 52 flights were subsequently created using a documented processing program along with the provision of optimal estimates for measurement uncertainty. Differences in the performance of the radiosondes were then quantified using the GRUAN data products. The temperature measurements of RS-11G were, on average, 0.4 K lower than those of RS92-SGP in the stratosphere for daytime observations. The relative humidity measurements of RS-11G were, on average, 2 % RH (relative humidity) lower than those of RS92-SGP under 90 % RH–100 % RH conditions, while RS-11G gave on average 5 % RH higher values than RS92-SGP under ≤50 % RH conditions. The results from a dual flight of RS-11G and a cryogenic frost point hygrometer (CFH) also showed that RS-11G gave 1 % RH–10 % RH higher values than the CFH in the troposphere. Differences between the RS-11G and RS92-SGP temperature and relative humidity measurements, based on combined uncertainties, were also investigated to clarify major influences behind the differences. It was found that temperature differences in the stratosphere during daytime observation were within the range of uncertainty (k=2), and that sensor orientation is the major source of uncertainty in the RS92-SGP temperature measurement, while sensor albedo is the major source of uncertainty for RS-11G. The relative humidity difference in the troposphere was larger than the uncertainty (k=2) after the radiosondes had passed through the cloud layer, and the temperature–humidity dependence correction was the major source of uncertainty in RS-11G relative humidity measurement. Uncertainties for all soundings were also statistically investigated. Most nighttime temperature measurements for pressures of >10 hPa were in agreement, while relative humidity in the middle troposphere exhibited significant differences. Around half of all daytime temperature measurements at pressures of ≤150 hPa and relative humidity measurements around the 500 hPa level were not in agreement.

Abstract: To analyze the factors affecting the tracking accuracy of the CyberKnife Synchrony Respiratory Tracking System (SRTS). A dynamic motion phantom (motion phantom) reproduced the respiratory motions of each patient treated with the SRTS using a ball as the target. CyberKnife tracked the ball using the SRTS, and this process was recorded by a video camera mounted on the linear accelerator head. The tracking error was evaluated from the images captured by the video camera. Multiple regression analysis was used to identify factors affecting tracking accuracy from 91 cases. The median tracking error was 1.9 mm (range 0.9–5.3 mm). Abstract: We report searches for B0→invisible and B0→invisible+γ decays, where the energy of the photon is required to be larger than 0.5 GeV. These results are obtained from a 711 fb-1 data sample that contains 772×106BB¯ pairs and was collected near the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider. We observe no significant signal for either decay and set upper limits on their branching fractions at 90% confidence level of B(B0→invisible)

Abstract: We present the first measurement of the Michel parameters η ‾ and ξκ in the radiative leptonic decay of the τ lepton using 703 fb-1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e + e − collider. The Michel parameters are measured by an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the kinematic information of e + e − → τ + τ − → ( π + π 0 ν ‾ ) ( l − ν ν ‾ γ ) ( l = e or μ ) . The preliminary values of the measured Michel parameters are η ‾ = − 2.0 ± 1.5 ± 0.8 and ξ κ = 0.6 ± 0.4 ± 0.2 , where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract: Multileaf collimator (MLC) technology has been newly introduced with the Cyberknife system. This study investigated the advantages of this system compared with the conventional circular collimator (CC) system. Dosimetric comparisons of MLC and CC plans were carried out. First, to investigate suitable target sizes for the MLC mode, MLC and CC plans were generated using computed tomography (CT) images from 5 patients for 1, 3, 5 and 7 cm diameter targets. Second, MLC and CC plans were compared in 10 patients, each with liver and prostate targets. For brain targets, doses to the brain could be spared in MLC plans better than in CC plans (P ≤ 0.02). The MLC mode also achieved more uniform dose delivery to the targets. The conformity index in MLC plans was stable, irrespective of the target size (P = 0.5). For patients with liver tumors, the MLC mode achieved higher target coverage than the CC mode (P = 0.04). For prostate tumors, doses to the rectum and the conformity index were lowered in MLC plans compared with in CC plans (P ≤ 0.04). Abstract: Definitive radiotherapy is an important alternative treatment for meningioma patients who are inoperable or refuse surgery. We evaluated the efficacy and toxicity of CyberKnife-based stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and hypofractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (hSRT) as first-line treatments for intracranial meningiomas that were diagnosed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and/or computed tomography (CT). Between February 2005 and September 2015, 41 patients with intracranial meningiomas were treated with CyberKnife-based SRS or hSRT. Eleven of those tumors were located in the skull base. The median tumor volume was 10.4 ml (range, 1.4–56.9 ml). The median prescribed radiation dose was 17 Gy (range, 13–20 Gy to the 61–88% isodose line) for SRS (n = 9) and 25 Gy (range, 14–38 Gy to the 44–83% isodose line) for hSRT (n = 32). The hSRT doses were delivered in 2 to 10 daily fractions. The median follow-up period was 49 months (range, 7–138). The 5-year progression-free survival rate (PFS) for all 41 patients was 86%. The 3-year PFS was 69% for the 14 patients with tumor volumes of ≥13.5 ml (30 mm in diameter) and 100% for the 27 patients with tumor volumes of 2 toxicities were observed in 5 patients (all of them had tumor volumes of ≥13.5 ml). Abstract: Whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) has been an important component of treatment for primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL), but delayed neurotoxicity has been a matter of concern. We have employed partial-brain radiotherapy (PBRT) with wide margins for PCNSL patients with a single lesion or a few lesions. In this study, we evaluated the treatment outcome in PCNSL patients undergoing PBRT. Between 2003 and 2014, 24 patients were treated with PBRT; 16 received high-dose-methotrexate (MTX) -containing chemotherapy before PBRT. Conventional fractionation with a median dose of 54 Gy was used. For reference, 15 patients undergoing MTX-based chemotherapy and WBRT were also analyzed. The 3-year overall survival rate was 60% for all 24 patients undergoing PBRT and 68% for the 16 patients undergoing MTX-based chemotherapy plus PBRT. The 3-year progression-free survival rate was 41% for all 24 patients undergoing PBRT and 36% for the 16 patients undergoing MTX-based chemotherapy. The in-field recurrence rate was 26% and the out-of-field recurrence rate was 15% at 3 years for all 24 patients undergoing PBRT. The rates for in-field recurrence and the out-of-field recurrence were 27% and 21%, respectively, for the 16 patients undergoing MTX-based chemotherapy. CNS-recurrence rates were similar in patients undergoing MTX-based chemotherapy and PBRT to the rates in those undergoing MTX-based chemotherapy and WBRT. Neurocognitive dysfunction developed in 3 of the 16 patients undergoing MTX + PBRT and in 4 of 15 patients undergoing MTX + WBRT (P = 0.68). PBRT seems to be a feasible treatment option for solitary PCNSL. Further investigations are warranted to evaluate the advantages of PBRT over WBRT.

Abstract: We treated prostate cancer patients with static 5-field intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) using linac 18-MV X-rays or tomotherapy with 6-MV X-rays. As X-ray energies differ, we hypothesized that 18-MV photon IMRT may be better for large patients and tomotherapy may be more suitable for small patients. Thus, we compared dose–volume parameters for the planning target volume (PTV) and organs at risk (OARs) in 59 patients with T1–3 N0M0 prostate cancer who had been treated using 5-field IMRT. For these same patients, tomotherapy plans were also prepared for comparison. In addition, plans of 18 patients who were actually treated with tomotherapy were analyzed. The evaluated parameters were homogeneity indicies and a conformity index for the PTVs, and D2 (dose received by 2% of the PTV in Gy), D98, Dmean and V10–70 Gy (%) for OARs. To evaluate differences by body size, patients with a known body mass index were grouped by that index ( 25 kg/m2). For the PTV, all parameters were higher in the tomotherapy plans compared with the 5-field IMRT plans. For the rectum, V10 Gy and V60 Gy were higher, whereas V20 Gy and V30 Gy were lower in the tomotherapy plans. For the bladder, all parameters were higher in the tomotherapy plans. However, both plans were considered clinically acceptable. Similar trends were observed in 18 patients treated with tomotherapy. Obvious trends were not observed for body size. Tomotherapy provides equivalent dose distributions for PTVs and OARs compared with 18-MV 5-field IMRT. Tomotherapy could be used as a substitute for high-energy photon IMRT for prostate cancer regardless of body size.

Abstract: The accuracy of the CyberKnife Synchrony Respiratory Tracking System (SRTS) is considered to be patient‐dependent because the SRTS relies on an individual correlation between the internal tumor position (ITP) and the external marker position (EMP), as well as a prediction method to compensate for the delay incurred to adjust the position of the linear accelerator (linac). We aimed to develop a system for obtaining pretreatment statistical measurements of the SRTS tracking error by using beam's eye view (BEV) images, to enable the prediction of the patient‐specific accuracy. The respiratory motion data for the ITP and the EMP were derived from cine MR images obtained from 23 patients. The dynamic motion phantom was used to reproduce both the ITP and EMP motions. The CyberKnife was subsequently operated with the SRTS, with a CCD camera mounted on the head of the linac. BEV images from the CCD camera were recorded during the tracking of a ball target by the linac. The tracking error was measured at 15 Hz using in‐house software. To assess the precision of the position detection using an MR image, the positions of test tubes (determined from MR images) were compared with their actual positions. Abstract: We search for lepton-flavor and lepton-number-violating τ decays into a lepton (l= electron or muon) and two charged mesons ( h , h ′ = π ± or K ± ) using 854 fb − 1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. We obtain 90% confidence level upper limits on the τ → l h h ′ branching fractions in the range ( 2.0 – 8.4 ) × 10 − 8 . These results improve upon our previously published upper limits by factors of about 1.8 on average.

Abstract: In this phase I/II study, we assessed the safety and initial efficacy of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for lung tumors with real-time tumor tracking using CyberKnife based on the Monte Carlo algorithm. Study subjects had histologically confirmed primary non-small-cell lung cancer staged as T1a-T2aN0M0 and pulmonary oligometastasis. The primary endpoint was the incidence of Grade ≥3 radiation pneumonitis (RP) within 180 days of the start of SBRT. The secondary endpoint was local control and overall survival rates. Five patients were initially enrolled at level 1 [50 Gy/4 fractions (Fr)]; during the observation period, level 0 (45 Gy/4 Fr) was opened. The dose was escalated to the next level when grade ≥3 RP was observed in 0 out of 5 or 1 out of 10 patients. Virtual quality assurance planning was performed for 60 Gy/4 Fr; however, dose constraints for the organs at risk did not appear to be within acceptable ranges. Therefore, level 2 (55 Gy/4 Fr) was regarded as the upper limit. After the recommended dose (RD) was established, 15 additional patients were enrolled at the RD. The prescribed dose was normalized at the 95% volume border of the planning target volume based on the Monte Carlo algorithm. Between September 2011 and September 2015, 40 patients (primary 30; metastasis 10) were enrolled. Five patients were enrolled at level 0, 15 at level 1, and 20 at level 2. Only one grade 3 RP was observed at level 1. Two-year local control and overall survival rates were 98 and 81%, respectively. The RD was 55 Gy/4 Fr. SBRT with real-time tumor tracking using CyberKnife based on the Monte Carlo algorithm was tolerated well and appeared to be effective for solitary lung tumors.

Abstract: Background Stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) may represent a new treatment option for individuals with auditory canal or middle ear cancer. Methods Study participants with pathologically proven ear cancer were treated with SRT (35 Gy for 3 fractions or 40 Gy for 5 fractions) as first-line therapy. When local tumor recurrence developed following SRT, subtotal temporal bone resection and postoperative chemoradiotherapy were performed as salvage treatment. Boluses were used for the initial 14 study patients. Results Twenty-nine study participants were enrolled and staged with T1 (n = 3), T2 (n = 7), T3 (n = 14), or T4 disease (n = 5). Three-year overall survival rates were 69% for T1/2 disease, 79% for T3 disease, and 0% for T4 disease. Three-year local control rates were 70% for T1/2 disease, 50% for T3 disease, and 20% for T4 disease. Grade 2 or higher dermatitis or soft-tissue necrosis occurred more frequently in study patients treated with boluses (8/14 vs 2/15; P = .02). Salvage treatment was safely performed for 12 recurrent cases. Conclusions These results suggest that SRT outcomes are promising for patients with ear cancer (≤ T3 disease). The rate of toxicity was acceptable in the study patients treated without boluses. Outcomes of salvage surgery and postoperative radiotherapy following SRT were also encouraging.

Abstract: We report the results of a study of B KIrk and /II K tic(2S) decays followed by qc and '/c(2S) decays to (K5K7). The results are obtained from a data sample containing 535 million BB-meson pairs collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB e+e- collider. We measure the products of the branching fractions B(B > IC7ic)13(71, Ks K 7T) = (26.7 1.4(stat)+N(syst) 4.9(model)) x 10-6 and 8(B -+ K 71c(25))8(rIc(2S) Ksi(7tT) = (3.4+N(stat + model)t(syst)) x 10-6. Interference with the non-resonant component leads to significant model uncertainty in the measurement of these product branching fractions. Our analysis accounts for this interference and allows the model uncertainty to be reduced. We also obtain the following charmonia masses and widths: MO/c) = (2985.4 1.5(stat)1:8(syst)) MeV /c2, r(t1c)= (35.1 3.1(sta0+1:2(syst)) MeV/c2, M(ric (2S)) = (3636.111(stat + model)+3:70 (syst)) MeV/c2, r (17c (2S)) = (6.61:1(stat + model)11(syst)) MeV/c2. Abstract: We search for lepton-flavor-violating tau-> ell V^0 decays, where ell is an electron or muon and V^0 is one of the vector mesons rho^0, phi, omega, K*0 and K*0-bar. We use 854 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. No evidence for a signal is found in any decay mode, and we obtain 90% confidence level upper limits on the individual branching fractions in the range (1.2-8.4)*10^{-8}., 13 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. No evidence for a signal was found in any of the decay modes, and we set the following upper limits for the branching fractions: B(τ-→e-KS 0)

Abstract: A proximity focusing RICH with aerogel radiator has been studied to extend the pion-kaon separation power in the forward region of the Belle spectrometer. Such a proximity focusing RICH counter is also a very fast detector, in particular if a micro-channel plate (MCP) PMT is used as the photon detector. With its excellent timing properties, the same device could also serve as a time-of-flight counter and thus supplement other identification methods, in particular for low momentum tracks. Cherenkov photons emitted in the radiator medium (aerogel) as well as in the entrance window of the PMT could be used for the time-of-flight measurement. A prototype of this novel device using BURLE 85011 64-anode, microchannel plate PMT, was tested on the bench and in the test beam at KEK. Excellent performance of this counter could be demonstrated. In particular, a good separation of pions and protons was observed in the test beam data with a time-of-flight resolution of about 35 ps (rms) for Cherenkov photons produced in the PMT window.

Abstract: The effect of sample collection site on semen parameters in ten men aged between 22 and 24 years was investigated. Sperm was collected at two sites: in a university hospital restroom for general use and in a one-person hospital room. Samples were collected from the same individual twice, with an interval of two weeks between collections. Semen parameters for the two sites were compared. Samples were collected after a minimum of three days and not longer than seven days of sexual abstinence. Sperm concentration did not differ significantly between the university hospital restroom location (86.8 +/- 25.4 x 10(6)/ml; mean +/- standard deviation) and the private hospital room (97.1 +/- 72.0 x 10(6)/ml). There was no difference in the total motile sperm count or daily sperm production between the collection sites. These results suggest that the collection site has little effect on semen parameters.

Abstract: Individual variation in semen parameters was investigated in healthy young volunteers. Semen samples were collected approximately once a month over a one-year period for a total of 93 samples (5 to 10 samples per subject) from 12 volunteers in their twenties. Semen analysis was carried out according to the WHO Manual. The amount of variation in each semen variable was calculated for each subject by dividing the maximum value by the minimum value. The results showed that the semen volume varied by 1.9+/-0.8 fold (1.3 to 4.2 fold), the sperm concentration by 4.8+/-4.3 fold (1.5 to 17.2 fold), the percentage of sperm with forward progression by 2.8+/-1.4 fold (1.6 to 6.4 fold), the percentage of sperm with rapid linear progression by 3.4+/-2.6 fold (1.7 to 10.9 fold), the percentage of sperm with normal morphology by 1.9+/-0.4 fold (1.3 to 2.4 fold), and the percentage of live sperm by 1.5+/-0.4 fold (1.1 to 2.6 fold). A between-group comparison showed significant differences in all of the variables except the percentage of sperm with normal morphology. These results suggest multiple and considerable semen analyses are needed when evaluating semen parameters.

Abstract: Numerical analysis was performed on the laminar thermal plasma flow of a constricted cascaded arc plasma generator with a larger ratio of radius and pipe length compared to previously used arc plasma generators. The numerical results concerning plasma temperature and velocity were compared with the experimental data measured using the probes methods. The effects of the mass flow rate of the plasma gas and the supplied current on plasma temperature, velocity, and current at a cross section of the plasma torch are clarified. These effects on plasma temperature and current density are estimated to be small when using a numerical model employing a single flow and a single temperature without taking into account the effects of the collision and dispersion of plasma gas particles. Except for the large mass flow rate of plasma gas, the numerical results for the plasma velocity are almost identical in magnitude to the experimental data.

Abstract: The case of a 25-year-old man who presented for evaluation of infertility is described. The physical examination revealed testicular atrophy without gynecomastia. Repeated seminal analyses showed azoospermia, and serum hormonal levels suggested a state of a hypergonadotropic hypogonadism. Chromosomal analysis demonstrated 46XX. Polymerase chain reaction revealed the existence of a sex-determining region Y. The etiology of this rare sex reversal syndrome is discussed and cases reported in Japan are reviewed.

Abstract: In an attempt to evaluate whether experimental disc herniation can result in changes in walking pattern, presumably indicating pain, four groups of rats – sham (n = 5), disc puncture (NP, n = 5), displacement of nerve root and ganglion (DIS, n = 5), and the combination of disc puncture and displacement (NP + DIS, n = 6) – were assessed when walking in a Plexiglas corridor at day 2–14 after surgery. All surgical procedures were performed at the L4–5 level on the left side. Step length analysis showed that rats in the NP and DIS series had no difference between the legs initially, but a tendency towards slightly shorter left steps at day 8–12, whereas the animals in the NP + DIS series had slightly shorter right steps day 2–10. However, no statistically significant differences compared with the sham series could be detected for any of the groups. Nerve dysfunction on the operated side was only observed on one occasion in two rats and on 2 days in one rat, all from the NP + DIS series. Apparent limping was seen in three of the animals in the NP + DIS series and in one in the DIS series. Limping and nerve dysfunction only co-incided on one occasion out of a total of 13 observations of limping, suggesting that the limping was induced by pain and not neurologic deficit. In conclusion, the combination of epidural nucleus pulposus and displacement induced a limping whereas nucleus pulposus or displacment alone did not. Assessment of limping thus seemed to provide adequate information of presence of pain, but step length measurement did not provide any useful data. Although walking analysis may be a valuable assessment of sciatic pain, better modalities must be developed to analyze experimentally induced nerve root pain.

Abstract: A monolayer adsorption of Ge on a single-domain Si(001)2 × 1 surface has been investigated by X-ray excited Auger electron diffraction (AED) and scanning tunneling microscopy. Contrary to the common belief, a significant intermixing of Ge down to at least the fourth layer is identified. This intermixing is found to progress to a stable interface alloy phase that develops fully for annealing at 500–600°C. A possible reason for the alloy phase is discussed to be an elastic interaction from the Si(001) surface.

Abstract: Among 121 cases of primary gastric malignant lymphoma from 1962 to 1994 at the National Cancer Center Hospital, Tokyo, we found four cases (three males and one female) of adenocarcinoma coexisting in the stomach. The incidence of gastric malignant lymphoma together with gastric adenocarcinoma was 3.3%, suggesting that patients with lymphoma may have an increased incidence of gastric adenocarcinoma. A review of the Japanese literature revealed an additional 62 patients who developed coexisting gastric malignant lymphoma and adenocarcinoma. In the total series of 66 patients whose age and sex were recorded, there were 48 males with a mean age of 63.8 years and 18 females with a mean age of 58.6 years. Most adenocarcinomas were macroscopically early (76%) and of histologically differentiated type (75%). Conversely, 71% of lymphomas were of the advanced type macroscopically. The correct preoperative diagnoses were made in only 27% (16/59) of cases, when both tumors were located independently.

Abstract: To establish a cytoplasmic male-sterile/restored fertility (cms-Rf) system for F1 seed production in Brassica napus, we transferred a gene from fertillity restored radish to B. napus by protoplast fusion. X-irradiated protoplasts, isolated from shoots of Raphanus sativus cv Kosena (Rf line), were fused with iodoacetamide-treated protoplasts of a B. napus cms cybrid. Among 300 regenerated plants, six were male-fertile. The fertile plants were characterized for petal color, chromosome number and the percentage of viable pollen grains. Three fertile plants had aneuploid chromosome numbers and white or cream petals, which is a dominant marker in radish. Of these three plants, one which had 2n = 47 chromosomes and white petals was used for further backcrosses. After two backcrosses, chromosome number and petal color became identical to that of B. napus. No female sterility was observed in the BC3 generations.

Abstract: A strain of cytopathic virus, named strain TG/K79, was isolated from the brain of a newborn piglet, pure Hampshire breed, which died shortly after birth. The physicochemical property of virus was considered to be that of the family Adenoviridae. A significant difference between our isolate and 4 reference porcine adenoviruses was demonstrated by cross-seroneutralization test Differences between TG/K79 and other porcine adenoviruses were also seen in electrophoretic patterns of viral DNA in agarose gel after digested by restiction endonucleases. Two SPF pigs, 2-month-old, experimentally infected via intranasal showed a fever and a hemorrhagic enteritis. A serological survey indicates that at least swine in the farm where the virus was isolated have been highly contaminated.
