This work assessed firefighters’ exposure to particulate matter (PM) in non-fire work settings during pre-fire season, as a baseline for the respective occupational exposure characterization. Indoor and outdoor air sampling was conducted for two weeks in pre-fire season of 2021 in seven fire corporations (FC1-FC7) in north of Portugal. PM fractions (PM2.5, PM10) were continuously monitored concurrently in indoors (living rooms, rest areas, truck bays) and outdoors. The results showed low levels of pollution. Indoor PM10 was between 2 and 205 μg m–3 (mean 10 μg m–3); PM2.5 were 2—115 μg m–3 (8.5 μg m–3). Both indoor PM fractions were highly and significantly correlated (rs = 0.959–0.997). PM2.5 accounted for 85% of indoor PM; indoor to outdoor ratios (I/O) of PM2.5 ranged between 1.4 and 3.0, thus emphasizing the contribution of indoor emission sources for fine fraction. Outdoor PM10 were 2–6 times higher than indoors (6–894 μg m–3; mean 21 μg m–3); and 2–9 times higher for PM2.5 (5 – 169 μg m–3; 5 μg m–3). Outdoor PM were moderately correlated (rs = 0.584 – 0.878), most likely due to meteorological conditions. Coarse particles contributed the majority of ambient PM10 and accounted for 79%. Understanding natural communities and ecosystems and the services they provide to humanity is highly dependent on knowledge about species composition and diversity through space and time. This is especially difficult in aquatic systems where traditional census methods provide species compositions that are usually truncated since rare species tend to go undetected. Detection of the rare species is important because they are either threatened or invasives at the earliest stage of invasion. One recent approach allowing detection of rare species uses environmental DNA (eDNA), present in water or soil, as traces of their existence. Here we propose to make use of recent technological developments in the area of high throughput sequencing to characterize freshwater fish communities and detect rare species, using a combination of eDNA metabarcoding and bulk eDNA metagenomics. A case-study will be conducted on the River Tagus (Portugal), which is inhabited by several rare fish species including both native and introduced taxa. In addition, the applicability of eDNA metagenomics for estimating the genetic diversity of populations will be assessed by comparing the results against those produced by traditional genetic screening of individual fish samples.

Universities are environments of significant influence in people’s lives, where students are trained for training and become the future leaders of society. In this sense, this work develops a way of evaluating the sustainability of university students, comparing them in different courses. The sustainability assessment is based on the input-state-output framework for systems, using three different indicators: the ecological footprint, happiness and academic performance. The ecological footprint is measured by the consumption of meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, milk and dairy products, paper, electricity, mobility and built area. Happiness has its own questionnaire, drawn from others already consolidated by the literature such as the Gallup World Poll, Gross National Happiness Index Survey-Happiness Alliance and Santa Monica Wellbeing Survey. Academic performance is assessed by the average grade of students. The three indicators are represented in a cube, graphically presenting the result of the sustainability assessment. Within the cube are presented eight ways of expressing the students’ sustainability, characterizing their course. This tool can facilitate decision making by university managers.

Background Understanding the mechanisms that underlie the diversification of herbivores through interactions with their hosts is important for their diversity assessment and identification of expansion events, particularly in a human-altered world where evolutionary processes can be exacerbated. We studied patterns of host usage and genetic structure in the wheat curl mite complex (WCM), Aceria tosichella, a major pest of the world’s grain industry, to identify the factors behind its extensive diversification. Results We expanded on previous phylogenetic research, demonstrating deep lineage diversification within the taxon, a complex of distinctive host specialist and generalist lineages more diverse than previously assumed. Time-calibrated phylogenetic reconstruction inferred from mitochondrial DNA sequence data suggests that lineage diversification pre-dates the influence of agricultural practices, and lineages started to radiate in the mid Miocene when major radiations of C4 grasses is known to have occurred. Furthermore, we demonstrated that host specificity is not phylogenetically constrained, while host generalization appears to be a more derived trait coinciding with the expansion of the world’s grasslands. Demographic history of specialist lineages have been more stable when compared to generalists, and their expansion pre-dated all generalist lineages. The lack of host-associated genetic structure of generalists indicates gene flow between mite populations from different hosts. Conclusions Our analyses demonstrated that WCM is an unexpectedly diverse complex of genetic lineages and its differentiation is likely associated with the time of diversification and expansion of its hosts. Signatures of demographic histories and expansion of generalists are consistent with the observed proliferation of the globally most common lineages. The apparent lack of constrains on host use, coupled with a high colonization potential, hinders mite management, which may be further compromised by host range expansion. This study provides a significant contribution to the growing literature on host-association and diversification in herbivorous invertebrates. This work explored a novel approach to enhance the antibacterial activity of commercial Gutta-percha (GP) cones, the most commonly used core filling materials used in endodontic treatment. The reported procedure involved an argon (Ar) plasma treatment (PT) of the GP cone surface, followed by the deposition of a ZnO thin film by magnetron sputtering. The resulting surfaces were evaluated for surface topography, antibacterial activity against Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus, and cytocompatibility with human osteoblastic cells. GP cones treated with NaOCl, a routine chair-side protocol, were also tested as reference. The deposition of a ZnO film on pristine GP cones increased its antibacterial activity. Cones pre-treated with Ar-plasma (PT) and coated with the ZnO thin film presented significantly higher antibacterial activity than that observed on the pristine and, also, compared to the ZnO coated cones. The higher antibacterial activity of PT + ZnO cones appears related to the major effects induced by the PT pre-treatment on the cone surface endowing the deposited ZnO film with a homogeneous nanostructured topography that greatly improved surface reactivity. The modified GP cones maintained an appropriate cytocompatibility with human cells. The seastarOphidiaster ophidianusis a vulnerable and protected species in the Mediterranean Sea but is common on North Atlantic islands such as the Azores and Madeira archipelagos. This work presents new insights into the phylogeography and genetic diversity ofO. ophidianusfrom the Azores, based on 67 sequences of the 16S mitochondrial gene and 46 sequences of the nuclear ATP intron 5 gene. Twenty-six samples from the Mediterranean and seven samples from Madeira were used as out-groups. The results revealed that there is a lack of genetic differentiation betweenO. ophidianusfrom the Azores and the out-groups. All, therefore, belong to the same lineage and argue for a fast and recent range expansion of this species into the Azores. Our results also suggest the existence of distinctive periods of strong gene flow followed by periods of either low or non-existent gene flow between the Mediterranean Sea and this archipelago, which could explain the presence of private haplotypes in all studied areas.

Species introductions worldwide are becoming more widespread and their impacts more harmful, especially regarding the introduction of predatory fish (Cox and Lima, 2006). Freshwater fish invasions are related to ecosystem consequences, namely, the decline of native species, and contribute to biotic homogenization on a global scale (McKinney and Lockwood, 1999; Vill_eger et al., 2011). The Mediterranean region freshwater ecosystems have a high number of endemic species but are under threat mainly due to non-native fishes (NNF), which currently represent more than 50% of the fish diversity (Smith and Darwall, 2006; Leprieur et al., 2008; Hermoso and Clavero, 2011). Iberian rivers are among the most invaded ecosystems within the Mediterranean region, with more than 25 NNF confirmed in Spain and 16 in Portugal (Elvira and Almod_ovar, 2001; Ribeiro et al., 2009; Ribeiro and Ver_ıssimo, 2014). It is predicted that further Iberian invasions will occur given the prevalent European invasion route (Garc_ıa-Berthou et al., 2005; Leprieur et al., 2008; Ribeiro et al., 2009). The wels catfish Silurus glanis Linnaeus, 1758 is among the largest freshwater fishes worldwide, being native to Eastern Europe and Western Asia and introduced to seven European countries (Copp et al., 2009). Silurus glanis exhibits rapid growth rates and attains a large body size (c. 500 cm total length and 306 kg), characteristics highly appreciated by anglers (Slav_ık et al., 2007; Copp et al., 2009). In recente years recreational fishermen have reported several captures of putative S. glanis; however, species identification lacks confirmation in Portugal. In the present paper, a first observation of the wels catfish S. glanis is confirmed in Portugal.

The phylogeography of Iberian freshwater fish species strongly reflects the geomorphological history of Iberian water drainages and formation of mountain ranges. In particular, the Iberian Central Massif limits two ichthyogeographical districts based on fish distribution assemblages: the Northwest district, which comprises all river basins north of the Central massif, and the Central-west district, which comprises the Tejo and Sado basins. Despite this scenario, the cyprinid Pseudochondrostoma polylepis occurs in both the Tejo and Mondego rivers (one either side of the Estrela Mountains, in the western end of the Central Massif). By analysing the population structure and demographic history of this straight-mouth nase, based on both mtDNA and microsatellites, we have found evidence of a relatively recent common origin for both Mondego and Tejo populations. Shared haplotypes and lack of divergent lineages for mitochondrial marker, high levels of admixture and common ancestry at the nuclear level, together with signatures of asymmetrical gene flow from Tejo to Mondego suggest a Mondego colonization through a founder event with an origin in Tejo. We suggest that this colonization might have resulted from the occurrence of river connections/captures between Mondego and Tejo headwater tributaries in the recent past. With this study we reinforce that local-scale geomorphological events and the adaptation/dispersal ability of a species to new environments can have a major impact on its demographic history, colonization processes, and ultimately its distribution. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 109, 656–669.

In the present study, we assessed the inter- and intrapopulation genetic and morphological variation of Cerithidea decollata along the eastern coast of Africa. The population structure of C. decollata along the latitudinal gradient was examined by sequencing 420 bp of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene in 172 snails from 29 sites, in a combined analysis with geometric morphometrics in 1799 snails from 32 sites. Analysis of molecular variance and spatial analysis of molecular variance showed a moderate spatial population differentiation from Kenya to the Republic of South Africa, suggesting genetic divergence between the northern, central, and southern regions. This structure appears to be the result of life-history traits combined with oceanographic features. Haplotype network and mismatch analysis suggest a recent population expansion during the Holsteinian inter- glacial period in the northern region and several colonization events in the central and southern regions. The morphometric approach suggests that morphological variation in shell shape is somewhat independent of the genetic divergence, revealing an overlap of shape across the latitudinal gradient but significant differences among-population at a local level. This may indicate that similar ecological pressures are acting along the coast, leading to the occurrence of similar morphological characters. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 107, 647-663. The warm water Ophidiaster ophidianus has a protected status in the Mediterranean Sea and also occurs in the shallow subtidal of the Azorean Archipelago. From April 2007 to August 2009, the population structure and seasonal abundance of O. ophidianus was studied at different depths within a marine conservation area offshore from São Miguel (SAC: PTMIG0020, Natura 2000). Ophidiaster ophidianus showed a marked seasonal trend in abundance, with higher numbers being recorded from 5 m depth during spring and autumn, and higher numbers at 10 m depth in summer and winter. Densities ranged from 9 to 16 individuals per 100 m2 over the sampling period. The size–frequency distribution of O. ophidianus was uni-modal for each sampling month. Small individuals dominated at 5 m depth, intermediate-sized individuals at 10 m and larger individuals were more frequent at 15 m. The present study establishes population parameters for O. ophidianus and provides the necessary information for management purposes at the north-western periphery of its range in the Azores.

The reproductive cycle of Ophidiaster ophidianus (strictly protected status) from Sao Miguel Island, in the Azorean Archipelago was studied. The reproductive strategy; the energy allocation of each sex during the reproductive cycle and the nutritional condition of the population were analyzed. Gonadal index (GI) showed a clear seasonal pattern with spawning between August and October but histological examination revealed that gamete release can occur throughout the entire year. The pyloric caeca index (PCI) showed little annual variation but with an inverse relationship with the GI. Allocation of energy to the gonads and to the pyloric caeca reflected the seasonal reproductive strategy of this species. Individuals were able to simultaneously develop gonads, pyloric caeca, and quickly regenerate lost arms. There was a major expenditure of energy by females compared to males but, sexual size dimorphism was not observed. The Iberian Peninsula has been identified as an important glacial refugium during the Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs for the genus Lampetra, providing intermittent refuge and postglacial opportunities for colonization and expansion. We used mitochondrial DNA markers to investigate the processes that have shaped present-day genetic constitution of the genus Lampetra within the Iberian Peninsula. We surveyed 1,173 bp of the cytochrome b gene and 829 bp of the genes ATPase subunits 6 and 8 in 233 individuals of Lampetra fluviatilis (L.) and Lampetra planeri (Bloch) from 21 localities along their distribution range in the Iberian Peninsula. We identified four highly divergent allopatric evolutionary lineages that evolved by fragmentation during the Pliocene and Pleistocene likely driven by environmental factors, namely regional geomorphic events. The high level of genetic divergence between the four lineages suggests that sufficient time has apparently passed by to originate a complex of incipient or cryptic resident species and allows the definition of four evolutionary significant units (ESUs) for L. planeri and one ESU for L. fluviatilis. These findings have important consequences for the interpretation of refugia biological diversity and have major implications on the conservation of these threatened species.

Phylogenies were generated using mitochondrial cytochrome b and nuclear s-actin gene DNA sequences to infer the phylogenetic relationships of the newly described Chondrostoma olisiponensis. Results indicate that the species is monophyletic with species of the lemmingii -group in mtDNA phylogenies, while it is monophyletic with species of the arcasii -group in the nuclear s-actin trees. This is in agreement with the morphological resemblance of C. olisiponensis to both species groups. Results from nuclear but not mitochondrial DNA indicate that one population could be currently hybridizing with sympatric Chondrostoma lusitanicum. Based on a relaxed clock calibration of cytochrome b, it is estimated that C. olisiponensis split 12·5–7·9 million years ago (middle–upper Miocene) from its most recent ancestor, which coincides with a period of endorrheism in the Iberian Peninsula.

The population genetic structure of the shore crab Pachygrapsus marmoratus was studied along the Portuguese coast based on six variable microsatellite loci. Genetic differentiation among populations according to a geographic gradient was not detected. This lack of genetic structure reflects the continuous distribution of the species along the Portuguese coast and suggests that gene flow occurs within the studied distribution range. Gene flow is probably maintained by the planktonic larvae of P. marmoratus that can last up to 31 days in the plankton. Tests for population differentiation demonstrated that the Praia das Avencas population is genetically more separated from all other populations, and Bayesian methodologies tend to form 4 groups that clustered together populations that are several hundred kilometres apart. This grouping pattern could be due to coastal hydrological events that are apparently influencing larval flux. Other hypotheses to explain the significant genetic heterogeneity among populations on a local scale and the absence of geographic variation are pre- and post-settlement natural selection events. Results suggest that the forces causing genetic differentiation may be acting on a local scale and that the larval pool is possibly not always mixed homogeneously.

Primers were developed that allow for rapid, reliable and inexpensive screening of cytochrome b by analysis of single-stranded conformational polymorphisms. Twenty different haplotypes were identified from six species of Iberian Barbus. These primers proved useful for population and species level studies, and could also be valuable in population genetic and phylogenetic studies of other cyprinin fishes.

The South-east Asian cyprinid Barbonymus schwanenfeldii is recorded for the first time in the Iberian Peninsula from two specimens collected in the Guadiana River Basin in 2005. Their presence is probably due to release from aquaria.

We propose a new general definition of Volterra operators. Several types of evolutionary operators, including Volterra ones in the sense of A.N. Tikhonov, satisfy this definition. For equations with generalized Volterra operators we introduce the notions of local, global, and maximally extended solutions. For solutions to nonlinear equations we formulate the existence, uniqueness, and extendability conditions. The theorems proved in this paper imply both known and new results on the solvability of concrete equations. We adduce an example of the application of obtained results to the study of the Cauchy problem for functional differential equations.

The effects of an extreme flash flood on the native fish assemblages across a Mediterranean catchment in Southwest Portugal were investigated. The fish community structure and habitat were surveyed at 10 sites pre- and post-flood. Overall species richness and rank abundances changed little after the flood, despite there being a consistent decline in the abundance of small cyprinids. Pre- and post-flood habitat correlates of abundance changed for at least some species, and variability in assemblage structure was associated with flood, depth and pH. These results indicate that extreme floods occurring early in the wet season may have little disruptive effects on the overall structure of native fish assemblages in Mediterranean streams, although may at least partially influence population dynamics for some species. Habitat quality and complexity are likely to play a role in mediating species responses to flooding.

Chondrostoma olisiponensis sp. nov. is described from the lower Rio Tejo Basin. It is a small species (all specimens examined less than 105mm SL) distinguished from the other species of Chondrostoma s.l. by the following combination of characters. Chondrostoma olisiponensis lacks a horny blade on the lower jaw, has a pronouncedly arched mouth, and lacks an intense reddish coloration at the base of the fins. It has elongated pelvic fins that reach the anus and often pass the anal-fin insertion in males, and dorsal, pelvic and anal fins usually have 8 branched rays. The new species has 36 to 43 scales in the lateral line, 7.0 to 8.5 scales above the lateral line, 13 to 16 circumpeduncular scales, denticulated (vs. smooth) grinding teeth surfaces, 6-5/5 pharyngeal teeth and 15 to 19 gill rakers. Chondrostoma olisiponensis is further distinguished from C. lusitanicum, a phylogenetically close species that lives in the same area, by having a higher body, a relatively longer head, and a larger eye. The origins of anal and pelvic fins are displaced anteriorly, while the origin of pectoral fins is displaced posteriorly. Pelvic and pectoral fins and last anal-fin ray are longer in the new species. Unlike the other species in the genus, C. olisiponensis shows external sexual dimorphism, with males having longer pelvic fins whose extremities pass the anus and often overlap with the anal fin. This description raises concerns on the recently proposed splitting of Chondrostoma s.l. since the morphological traits deemed characteristic of some genera are unsuitable for their diagnosis. The species should be considered Critically Endangered (CR) according to IUCN criteria B1ab(ii,iii,iv)c(iv)+2ab(ii,iii,iv)c(iv).

The karyotype of the endangered fish Anaecypris hispanica was revisited using advanced cytogenetic techniques to elucidate its putative relationship with the paternal ancestor of the hybrid complex Squalius alburnoides and to clarify some of the recently described cytogenetic patterns of the complex. The results of chromomycin A3 and Ag staining, as well as fluorescent in situ hybridization with 28S and 5S rDNA and the (TTAGGG)n telomeric probes, were compared with the patterns observed in specimens of the all-male nonhybrid lineage of S. alburnoides complex, which is considered to reconstitute the nuclear genome of the probably extinct paternal ancestor. Several cytogenetic features observed in A. hispanica specimens were indeed shared by S. alburnoides nuclear nonhybrid males, supporting the hypothesis of a close evolutionary link between A. hispanica and the paternal ancestor of the complex. The genomic rearrangements involving 28S rDNA sites previously described in the S. alburnoides complex and in its maternal ancestor ( S. pyrenaicus ) were not detected in A. hispanica; they are, therefore, probably due to mechanisms related to hybridization and polyploidy.

The main purpose of this paper is to establish the existence of positive solutions to a class of quasilinear elliptic equations involving the ($p$-$q$)-Laplacian operator. We consider a nonlinearity that can be subcritical at infinity and supercritical at the origin; we also consider potential functions that can vanish at infinity. The approach is based on variational arguments dealing with the mountain-pass lemma and an adaptation of the penalization method. In order to overcome the lack of compactness, we modify the original problem and the associated energy functional. Finally, to show that the solution of the modified problem is also a solution of the original problem we use an estimate obtained by the Moser iteration scheme.

Squalius alburnoides is a complex of minnows common to the Iberian Peninsula, consisting of two distinct forms. The most common form is comprised of diploid and polyploid asexual hybrids heterozygous for several diagnostic allozyme loci contributed by Squalius pyrenaicus or Squalius carolitertii and a missing ancestor. The other form is diploid and homozygous for the allele contributed by the missing ancestor at these same loci. Present results from analyses of sex ratio and cytochrome b sequences are not consistent with the evolutionary distinctiveness of this non-hybrid form and suggest that it represents an all-male lineage imbedded within an almost all-female complex. This all-male lineage allowed preservation of the ancestral paternal nuclear genome after the paternal ancestor became extinct in all or most drainages, with important evolutionary implications.

The Iberian minnow Leuciscus alburnoides represents a complex of diploid and polyploid forms with altered modes of reproduction. In the present paper, we review the recent data on the origin, reproductive modes, and inter-relationships of the various forms of the complex, in order to predict its evolutionary potential. The complex follows the hybrid-origin model suggested for most other asexual vertebrates. Diploid and triploid females from the southern river basins exhibit reproductive modes that cannot be conveniently placed into the categories generally recognised for these vertebrate complexes, which imply continuous shifting between forms, where genomes derived from both parental ancestors are cyclically lost, gained or replaced. Replacement of nuclear genomes allow the introduction of novel genetic material, that may compensate for the disadvantages of asexual reproduction. Contrasting with most other vertebrate complexes, L. alburnoides males are fertile and play an important role in the dynamics of the complex. Moreover, diploid hybrid males may have initiated a tetraploidization process, when a diploid clonal sperm fertilised a diploid egg. This direct route to tetraploidy by originating fish with the right constitution for normal meiosis (symmetric), may eventually lead to a new sexually reproducing polyploid species. This case-study reinforces the significance of hybridisation and polyploidy in evolution and diversification of vertebrates.

The generic position of the Iberian unisexual fish complex alburnoides is reassessed based on genetic evidence of a hybrid ancestry and of a monophyletic relationship with endemic Leuciscus taxa. There is a continuous movement of genes between the different forms of the complex and the main mode of reproduction is by meiotic hybridogenesis. Thus its return to the original generic position Leuciscus is recommended. © 1999 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles

The use of molecular techniques has shown that hybridization and introgression have significant impacts in evolution, by means of transfer of genetic variation and formation of hybrid species. In this paper we use mitochondrial and nuclear sequence data to investigate the evolutionary history, levels of genetic diversity and population differentiation of a rare and endangered fish species. Our results suggest that a hybrid origin scenario of Chondrostoma olisiponensis is a likely explanation for the shared genetic and morphological traits with Iberochondrostoma and Achondrostoma ? Pseudochondrostoma. The basal positioning of C. olisiponensis alleles in all loci analyzed indicates that hybridization events occurred before differentiation within each of these groups, most likely during Middle–Late Miocene. Originally described as C. olisiponensis, we suggest that this species should be placed in the genus Iberochondrostoma to avoid confusion with ‘real’ central European Chondrostoma and to (partially) reflect its evolutionary history. Analyses of levels of genetic diversity and patterns of population subdivision show that populations of the rare Iberochondrostoma olisiponensis are differentiated (high and significant uST and FST) and genetically depauperate (very low S, p, and h). I. olisiponensis is simultaneously imperiled by small population sizes and contemporary bidirectional hybridization with another critically endangered sympatric species (Iberochondrostoma lusitanicum). Urgent ex-situ conservation measures involving supportive breeding of I. olisiponensis are needed to preserve present genetic variation and eventually increase in situ population sizes, along with further studies focused on different life history and behavioral characteristics of this highly endangered species. Cytochrome b (cyt b) sequences from specimens of the Rutilus alburnoides unisexual complex and five bisexual species were compared to examine hypotheses regarding the origin and maternal ancestry of this complex. Phylogenetic analysis revealed a monophyletic relationship among unisexuals and Leuciscus pyrenaicus, clearly identifying this species as the maternal ancestor. Considerable mtDNA diversity exists among R. alburnoides populations, with many localities exhibiting unique haplotypes. The topology recovered from analysis of cyt b variation among populations suggested that R. alburnoides is polyphyletically derived from their sympatric L. pyrenaicus populations, indicating that unisexual lineages have been generated through multiple hybridization events. Although much less abundant, R. alburnoides is present outside the range of L. pyrenaicus, suggesting that it may have dispersed from the Tejo drainage into the northern basins. In this region, Leuciscus carolitertii is most likely the sexual host for the unisexual complex.

Samples collected from throughout the range of Chondrostoma lusitanicum Collares-Pereira, were examined electrophoretically for patterns of variation at 24 presumptive gene loci. Thirteen loci were found to be polymorphic (frequency of the most common allele 0.95). There was high differentiation between rivers, especially in the southern populations of the Mira and the Arade catchments. This differentiation was associated with a low level of genetic variation and was thus interpreted in the light of past and present bottlenecks. The differentiation of C. lusitanicum is congruent with that already observed for another cyprinid species of the genus Leuciscus inhabiting the same catchments. This reinforces the hypothesis that the periodic drying-up of extensive sections of these rivers may lead to reduction in population sizes and subsequent differentiation. The level of genetic divergence of both the Mira and Arade populations of C. lusitanicum compared to all other populations sampled suggested a review of their conspecific status is necessary despite morphological similarity. The management implications in these rivers, and in the Tejo and Sado basins where C. lusitanicum is very rare, are discussed.

Two tautomeric dihydropurine derivatives, C 14 H 15 N 5 O, namely 2,2-dimethyl-9-phenyl-1,2-dihydropurine-6-carboxamide, (A) (coloured orange-red), and 2,2-dimethyl-9-phenyl-2,3-dihydropurine-6-carboxamide, (B) (yellow), are confirmed to have hydrogen substituents at N1 and N3, respectively. A different pattern of observed bond lenghts in the purine rings of (A) and (B) illustrates differences in conjugation in accordance with the different bond alternation. The tautomerism also gives rise to differences in the hydrogen bonding, although both tautomers have an internal hydrogen bond from an amide N-H to an N atom of the five-membered ring, with N...N distances 2.84 (2) A in (A) and 2.836(6)A in (B).

Culex (Culex) pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae) has two recognized biotypes, pipiens and molestus, which differ in physiology and behaviour; this difference may influence vectorial capacity for West Nile virus (WNV). Our goal was first to determine the presence of Cx. pipiens populations in 31 locations in Portugal and to subsequently analyse their host-feeding preferences and habitat determinants. Molecular identification of Cx. pipiens forms and their hybrids was performed in 97 females; bloodmeal sources were identified in 59 engorged specimens. Overall, 61.9% of specimens were identified as Cx. pipiens f. pipiens, 20.6% as Cx. pipiens f. molestus, and 17.5% as hybrid forms. Culex pipiens f. pipiens fed preferentially on birds, and Cx. pipiens f. molestus on humans. Hybrid forms fed mostly on birds, but human bloodmeals were common. With reference to habitat, Cx. pipiens f. pipiens and hybrid forms were positively correlated with peri-urban habitats. Our results confirm the sympatric presence of different Cx. pipiens biotypes in 14 of the 31 locations studied. Peri-urban areas were a common habitat of all biotypes and may represent zones of hybridization. The feeding preferences and sympatric distribution of the Cx. pipiens biotypes observed in Portugal favour the epizootic circulation of WNV and the occurrence of disease outbreaks of WNV.

A comprehensive review of the literature on shallow-water asteroids (Echinodermata) recorded in Azores was carried out to establish a definitive list for the Archipelago. A total of 49 echinoderm species was compiled, comprising members of all extant classes; Crinoidea (1), Asteroidea (12), Ophiuroidea (11), Echinoidea (10) and Holothuroidea (7). References of asteroids occurence in the Azores, including historical records and distribution of asteroids from the Azores are given. Seven asteroid species recorded found in the Azores are found also in the Mediterranean and adjoining Atlantic coastlines, three are recorded from the Mediterranean and both sides of the Atlantic, one is limited to the Eastern Atlantic and one is circumtropical. Differences between the littoral hydrological conditions found on the North American coast and those in Azores makes the colonization from American coasts particularly difficult and probably are related to chance events like the episodic anomalies found in the general pattern of oceanic circulation. Asteroids are important in determining habitat structure for other species and can represent a substantial portion of the ecosystem biomass.

Products of 24 presumptive enzyme loci were used to analyse the consequences on genetic structure and variation of the Chondrostoma lusitanicum population decline within the Tejo basin. This rare cyprinid is endemic to the Iberian Peninsula and has a very restricted distribution. Five samples from the Tejo catchment were compared with a sample from a small basin, the Samarra, that has not suffered obvious anthropogenic pressures and where the fish is still abundant. Heterozygosity and polymorphism were higher overall in the Samarra. Several lines of evidence indicate a high degree of population subdivision within the Tejo basin. In fact, about half of the total gene diversity detected in the Tejo population was due to differences among samples. This differentiation appeared to be caused by genetic drift and possibly differential local selection, coupled with reduced gene flow among localities. The accelerated process of habitat degradation occurring in the lowland streams of the Tejo basin will lead to the inevitable reduction of intraspecies genetic diversity.

Thirty paralog-specific primers were developed, following an intron-primed exon-crossing strategy, for S7 and growth hormone genes in Barbus (subgenera Barbus and Luciobarbus). We found that paralog-specific amplification requires the use of only one paralog-specific primer, allowing their simultaneous use with universal exon-primed intron-crossing primers of broad taxonomic applicability. This hybrid annealing strategy guarantees both specificity and generality of amplification reactions and represents a step forward in the amplification of duplicated nuclear loci in polyploid organisms and members of multigene families. Assays of several representative taxa identified high levels of segregating single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and nucleotide diversity within each of these subgenera. Additionally, several insertions-deletions (indels) that are diagnostic across species are found in intronic regions. Therefore, these primers provide a reliable source of valuable nuclear SNP and indel data for population and species level studies of barbels, such as applied conservation and basic evolutionary studies.
