The Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) onboard Solar Orbiter ob-served an eruption through both of its channels (17.4/30.4 nm) of its Full Sun Imager, on 22 April 2021. At the time, the spacecraft was at 0.87 au from the Sun,and 98◦ east of the Sun-Earth line. The eruption was slightly back-sided, emerging close to the southwest limb, starting at 04:24 UT, with the source located at S20W103 from the Solar Orbiter perspective. The Solar Orbiter coronagraph, Metis, observed the CME at 06:05 UT. The Spectrometer/Telescope for Imaging X-rays (STIX) on Solar Orbiter sampled the associated X-ray flare, which was partially occulted. This allowed the characterization of both the thermal plasmaand any potential contribution of non-thermal electrons in the tenuous coronal source. The X-ray source location is compared to the extreme ultraviolet coronal structures seen by EUI, and it is established that STIX imager only sees the top part of the flaring loops, while most of the flare – in particular the non-thermal foot points – remain occulted. From the Earth’s perspective the eruption source region was observed at S20W05 (close to disk centre), the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA), onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and the Sun Watcher using Active Pixel System detector and Image Processing (SWAP), onboard the PRoject for OnboardAutonomy (PROBA2) observed dimmings and an associated large-scale coronal wave starting around 04:07 UT. The Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUVI) on the Solar-TErrestial RElations Observatory (STEREO-A), located 53◦ east of the Sun-Earth line at the time, observed similar signatures of an eruption starting around 04:17 UT, on-disk at S20W50. The corresponding CME was observedas a partial halo CME shortly after (∼06:00 UT) by the C2 Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO), from the Earth perspective onboard the SOlar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), and by the STEREO-A/COR2 coronagraph as a clear structured CME around 05:23 UT. The corresponding ICME arrived at Earth on 24 April 2021, it was driving ashock and created minor geomagnetic storm conditions. We simulate the CMEwith the 3D MHD heliospheric model EUHFORIA. We provide an analysis ofthe eruption as observed by these various instruments from different vantage points. The combination of data from Solar Orbiter as well as other space-based assets with numerical modeling clearly showcases the scientific potential for the science phase of Solar Orbiter, and the unique observations available.

Context. Accurate detections of frequent small-scale extreme ultraviolet (EUV) brightenings are essential to the investigation of the physical processes heating the corona. Aims. We detected small-scale brightenings, termed campfires, using their morphological and intensity structures as observed in coronal EUV imaging observations for statistical analysis. Methods. We applied a method based on Zernike moments and a support vector machine (SVM) classifier to automatically identify and track campfires observed by Solar Orbiter/Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) and Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA). Results. This method detected 8678 campfires (with length scales between 400 km and 4000 km) from a sequence of 50 High Resolution EUV telescope (HRIEUV) 174 Å images. From 21 near co-temporal AIA images covering the same field of view as EUI, we found 1131 campfires, 58% of which were also detected in HRIEUV images. In contrast, about 16% of campfires recognized in HRIEUV were detected by AIA. We obtain a campfire birthrate of 2 × 10−16 m−2 s−1. About 40% of campfires show a duration longer than 5 s, having been observed in at least two HRIEUV images. We find that 27% of campfires were found in coronal bright points and the remaining 73% have occurred out of coronal bright points. We detected 23 EUI campfires with a duration greater than 245 s. We found that about 80% of campfires are formed at supergranular boundaries, and the features with the highest total intensities are generated at network junctions and intense H I Lyman-α emission regions observed by EUI/HRILya. The probability distribution functions for the total intensity, peak intensity, and projected area of campfires follow a power law behavior with absolute indices between 2 and 3. This self-similar behavior is a possible signature of self-organization, or even self-organized criticality, in the campfire formation process.

Primary and secondary parasitoids of Hypogeococcus spp. (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) on Cactaceae, Amaranthaceae, and Portulacaceae were reported from field surveys conducted in Puerto Rico, USA, since 2009. Resident natural enemies of the Harrisia cactus mealybug (HCM), Hypogeococcus sp., which is devastating native cacti in Puerto Rico and threatening cacti in the adjacent Caribbean islands, were documented prior to the planned introductions of non-native biological control agents from South America against this pest. Two species of Encyrtidae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) were recorded as primary parasitoids of the HCM on Cactaceae: Leptomastidea hypogeococci Triapitsyn, which was the most common, and Anagyrus quilmes Triapitsyn, Logarzo & Aguirre. Another primary parasitoid, Acerophagus sp. near nubilipennis Dozier (Encyrtidae), was also reared from a different Hypogeococcus sp. on Amaranthaceae and Portulacaceae. Hyperparasitoids, usually via L. hypogeococci, included Prochiloneurus narendrani Noyes & Triapitsyn (Encyrtidae), Pachyneuron sp. (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), Chartocerus elongatus (Girault), and Chartocerus niger (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Signiphoridae). Cheiloneurus chrisiantorresi Triapitsyn sp. n. (Encyrtidae) is newly described and illustrated; its status as a suspect hyperparasitoid of Hypogeococcus sp. on Amaranthaceae and Portulacaceae, along with that of Cheiloneurus sp., will need to be verified. The recorded HCM predators include one species of Chamaemyiidae (Diptera), Leucopina bella (Loew), and three species of Coccinellidae (Coleoptera): Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Mulsant, Decadiomus austrinus (Gordon), and Scymnobius flavifrons (Melsheimer).

INTRODUCTION Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) are the most common connective tissue neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract, the most common clinical presentation of which is with abdominal pain or gastrointestinal bleeding. METHODS We describe a case of a perforated gastric GIST as well as reviewing the relevant published literature. RESULTS A 51-year-old woman presented to the acute assessment unit with a 1-day history of severe epigastric pain on a background of longstanding reflux symptoms. Radiological investigation demonstrated a perforated mass in the gastric antrum and the patient subsequently underwent an emergency distal gastrectomy. She recovered well postoperatively and was discharged home. Her condition remains stable six months following surgery. Histological analysis revealed the perforated lesion to be a GIST. A PubMed search suggests that this is the first English report to describe a perforated gastric GIST. Six further published reports (written in English or with an English abstract) describing the presentation of small bowel GISTs with perforation are reviewed. CONCLUSIONS We present the first English report of a perforated gastric GIST. More common presentations include abdominal pain and gastrointestinal bleeding. Although rare, GISTs should be considered in the differential diagnoses of perforated gastrointestinal masses.

The cooling of plasmas in closed coronal loops by thermal conduction is important when considering their detectability at X-ray and EUV wavelengths. A non-local formalism of thermal conduction originating in laboratory plasmas is used and it is shown that while the effect is unlikely to be important for loops that are in a steady state, it does play a significant role in loops that are impulsively heated (e.g., by nanoflares). Such loops are “under-dense”, and so hot electrons have a relatively long mean free path. Analytic and numerical models are presented, and it is shown that conduction cooling times are lengthened quite considerably. A comparison of various cooling times with ionisation times is also presented, and it is noted that this conductive physics may enhance the chances of observing hot nanoflare-heated plasma.

We report on a search for faint (R total magnitude fainter than 21) and low surface brightness galaxies (R central surface brightness fainter than ~24) (fLSBs) in a 0.72x0.82 deg2 area centered on the Coma cluster. We analyzed deep B and R band CCD imaging obtained using the CFH12K camera at CFHT and found 735 fLSBs. The total B magnitudes, at the Coma cluster redshift, range from -13 to -9 with B central surface brightness as faint as 27 mag/arcsec2. Using empty field comparisons, we show that most of these fLSBs are probably inside the Coma cluster. We present the results of comparing the projected fLSB distributions with the distributions of normal galaxies and with known X-ray over densities. We also investigate their projected distribution relative to their location in the color magnitude relation. Previous studies have demonstrated variable effects on systemic inflammatory and immune responses following improved periodontal health. This study examined changes in serum levels of the inflammatory mediators IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α and sICAM-1, and antibodies to Porphyromonas gingivalis, human heat shock protein (hHSP) 60 and P. gingivalis GroEL following improvement in periodontal health in high cardiovascular (CV) risk and low CV-risk patients.Patients retrospectively selected from a longitudinal study, had undergone yearly periodontal examinations and peripheral blood collections. They had demonstrated a quantifiable improvement in periodontal health (60% reduction in number of sites with probing depth ≥ 4 mm from the baseline visit) and could be classified as either high CV-risk (≥ 6 classical risk factors, n = 13) or low CV-risk (≤ 1 classical risk factor, n = 14). Serum levels of the cytokines and antibodies were measured using ELISA.For sICAM-1 and anti-P. gingivalis GroEL and anti-hHSP60 antibodies, most patients recorded decreased levels. Reductions in serum sICAM-1 levels were more notable in low CV-risk patients (p = 0.006); and reductions in levels of anti-P. gingivalis GroEL and anti-hHSP60 antibodies (p = 0.001 and 0.009 respectively) were more notable in high CV-risk patients.This study found that subsequent to improved periodontal health, the anti-HSP (HSP60 and GroEL) antibody response was reduced, particularly for high CV-risk patients. sICAM-1 levels were also lowered, more so for low CV-risk patients.

This study follows a recent analysis of the galaxy luminosity functions and colour-magnitude red sequences in the Coma cluster (Adami et al. 2007). We analyze here the distribution of very faint galaxies and globular clusters in an east-west strip of $\sim 42 \times 7$ arcmin$^2$ crossing the Coma cluster center (hereafter the CS strip) down to the unprecedented faint absolute magnitude of M$_R \sim -9.5$. This work is based on deep images obtained at the CFHT with the CFH12K camera in the B, R, and I bands. The analysis shows that the observed properties strongly depend on the environment, and thus on the cluster history. When the CS is divided into four regions, the westernmost region appears poorly populated, while the regions around the brightest galaxies NGC 4874 and NGC 4889 (NGC 4874 and NGC 4889 being masked) are dominated by faint blue galaxies. They show a faint luminosity function slope of -2, very significantly different from the field estimates. Results are discussed in the framework of galaxy destruction (which can explain part of the very faint galaxy population) and of structures infalling on to Coma., To be published in A&A

We have obtained deep and wide field imaging of the Coma cluster of galaxies with the CFH12K camera at CFHT in the B, V, R and I filters. In this paper, we present the observations, data reduction, catalogs and first scientific results. We investigated the quality of our data by internal and external literature comparisons. We also checked the realisation of the observational requirements we set. Our observations cover two partially overlapping areas of $42 \times 28$ arcmin$^2$, leading to a total area of 0.72 $\times$ 0.82 deg$^2$. We have produced catalogs of objects that cover a range of more than 10 magnitudes and are complete at the 90% level at B$\sim$25, V$\sim$24, R$\sim$24 and I$\sim$23.5 for stellar-like objects, and at B$\sim$22, V$\sim$21, R$\sim$20.75 and I$\sim$20.5 for faint low-surface-brightness galaxy-like objects. Magnitudes are in good agreement with published values from R$\sim$16 to R$\sim$25. The photometric uncertainties are of the order of 0.1 magnitude at R$\sim$20 and of 0.3 magnitude at R$\sim$25. Astrometry is accurate to 0.5~arcsec and also in good agreement with published data. Our catalog provides a rich dataset that can be mined for years to come to gain new insights into the formation and evolution of the Coma cluster and its galaxy population. As an illustration of the data quality, we examine the bright part of the Colour Magnitude Relation (B-R versus R) derived from the catalog and find that it is in excellent agreement with that derived for galaxies with redshifts in the Coma cluster, and with previous CMRs estimated in the literature., A&A, 2006, 451, 1159. Clusters of galaxies are believed to be at the intersections of cosmological filaments and to grow by accreting matter from these filaments. Such continuous infall has major consequences not only on clusters but also on the physics of cluster galaxies. Faint galaxies are particularly interesting as they are very sensitive to environmental effects, and may have a different behaviour from that of bright galaxies. The aim of this paper is to sample the Coma cluster building history, based on the analysis of galaxy luminosity functions and red sequences in the Color Magnitude Relation down to faint magnitudes, which are privileged tools for this purpose. The present analysis is based on deep (R~24), wide (~0.5 deg2) multiband (BVRI Vega system) images of the Coma cluster obtained with the CFH12K camera at the CFHT. We have derived LFs and CMRs in twenty 10x10 arcmin2 regions and in larger regions. In all photometric bands, we found steeply rising LFs in the north-northeast half of the cluster (due to early type galaxies at bright magnitudes and due to late type galaxies at the faint end), and much flatter LFs in the south-southwest region. Although the fine behaviour of the CMR RS is different in these two regions, a good agreement is found in general between the RS computed for faint and for bright galaxies. All these results can be interpreted consistently in the framework of the building up process previously proposed. The hippocampal formation is a neuroanatomically well-defined region of the brain involved in memory processes. In view of the functional importance of the region and its involvement in a number of brain pathologies, including Alzheimer's disease and temporal lobe epilepsy, a quantitative description of its vascular supply represents an important first step in evaluating the involvement of vascular changes in these phenomena. Unbiased estimates of the length and connectivity of the vascular supply of brain regions have not been described previously. The total number, total length, and distribution of the diameters of capillaries were estimated in the five major subdivisions of the hippocampal formation (fascia dentata, hilus, CA3-2, CA1, and subiculum) in 5 normal males, 52-84 years of age. These estimates were used to derive several other structural parameters. Both the primary and the derived parameters were used to make inter- and intra-individual comparisons. For each of the five major subdivisions from each individual, the volume was estimated using the Cavalieri principle. The total capillary length was estimated on 3-microm-thick plastic isotropic uniform random sections. Using a topological definition of a capillary unit and the optical disector, total capillary number was estimated in 40-microm-thick plastic sections. Length-and number-weighted three-dimensional diameter distributions were obtained from the thin and thick plastic sections, respectively. In each subdivision the total length of capillaries was correlated with previously obtained data on the number of neurons in the same subdivisions of the same individuals. Intersubdivisional differences were observed, in that the hilus of the dentate gyrus had fewer capillaries per unit volume than the other four subdivisions. Interindividual comparisons indicate that the interindividual variances are of a magnitude suitable for sensitive group comparisons. The design-based stereological methods that were used in the analyses can provide a basis for a new unbiased approach to the estimation of vascular parameters in well-defined regions of the brain.

Relative ages for the globular cluster (GC) subpopulations in the Virgo giant elliptical galaxy M87 (NGC 4486) have been determined from Stroemgren photometry obtained with WFPC2 on board HST. Using a variety of population synthesis models, and assuming the GC mass at the turnover of the luminosity function is the same for both subpopulations, differential ages have been determined from the observed magnitudes at the turnover of the globular cluster luminosity function and from the mean color of each subpopulation. We measure an age difference between the two subpopulations of 0.2 +/- 1.5 (systematic) +/- 2 (random) Gyr, in the sense that the blue GCs are formally older. Thus, to within our measurement errors, the two subpopulations are found to be coeval. Combined with previous spectroscopic age determinations for M87 GCs, our results favor a picture in which the GCs associated with this galaxy are formed at high redshift, and within a period of a few Gyr., Comment: 5 pages, 2 postscript figures. The principle that formed the basis of the most popular "assumption based" stereological methods for counting cells that were available prior to the advent of the more recently developed "design based" methods will be described in general terms. The major weaknesses inherent in the older methods will be described, along with how they have been eliminated by the design based methods.

The aim of this study was to determine whether hippocampus-dependent associative learning involves changes in the number and/or structure of hippocampal synapses. A behavioral paradigm of trace eyeblink conditioning was used. Young adult rabbits were given daily 80 trial sessions to a criterion of 80% conditioned responses in a session. During each trial, the conditioned (tone) and unconditioned (corneal airpuff) stimuli were presented with a stimulus-free or trace interval of 500 msec. Control rabbits were pseudoconditioned by equal numbers of random presentations of the same stimuli. Brain tissue was taken for morphological analyses 24 hours after the last session. Synapses were examined in the stratum radiatum of hippocampal subfield CA1. Unbiased stereological methods were used to obtain estimates of the total number of synapses in this layer as well as the area of the postsynaptic density. The data showed that the total numbers of all synaptic contacts and various morphological subtypes of synapses did not change in conditioned animals. The area of the postsynaptic density, however, was significantly increased after conditioning in axospinous nonperforated synapses. This structural alteration may reflect an addition of signal transduction proteins (such as receptors and ion channels) and the transformation of postsynaptically silent synapses into functional ones. The findings of the present study indicate that cellular mechanisms of hippocampus-dependent associative learning include the remodeling of existing hippocampal synapses. Further studies examining various time points along the learning curve are necessary to clarify the issue of whether these mechanisms also involve the formation of additional synaptic contacts.

We have studied the antiemetic effects of propofol when mixed with morphine in a patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) pump after major gynaecological surgery. In a double-blind, randomized, controlled study, 50 women, ASA I or II, received a standardized anaesthetic comprising thiopental, morphine, atracurium, nitrous oxide and oxygen with enflurane, and received postoperative PCA with morphine mixed with either 1% propofol or lvelip. The PCA bolus was morphine 1 mg with propofol 5 mg or lvelip 0.5 ml, with a lockout time of 5 min. Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) were assessed by the nursing staff using a four-point ordinal scale and by the patient using a visual analogue scale for 48 h after surgery. The two groups were similar in the potential factors influencing the incidence of PONV. There were no significant differences between the two groups in any of the study measurements of PONV. There were, no side effects after propofol. Propofol, when mixed with morphine in this dose combination for PCA, did not decrease the incidence of nausea and vomiting in women undergoing major gynaecological surgery.

The total number of neurons in the major laminae of the human entorhinal cortex were estimated with a design-based stereological technique, the optical fractionator. Detailed descriptions of the laminar organization and the cortical limits of the region required for the analysis are provided, along with detailed descriptions of the sampling scheme employed. The individual, mean values, and variances for estimates made in layers II, III, V, and VI are presented and discussed in terms of the precision of the estimation procedure and the results of other studies. Neuron numbers were estimated to be about 1 million layer II cells, 5 million layer III cells, 2 million layer V cells, and 4 million layer VI cells, for a total of slightly more that 13 million neurons in the entorhinal cortex. Combined with data from a similar study carried out in the human hippocampus, the data presented represent the first rigorous stereological evidence of the divergence of entorhinal projections to the hippocampus. The data presented also indicate that projections from layer II of the entorhinal cortex to the dentate gyrus and CA2/3 and projections from layer III of the entorhinal cortex to CA1 differ in the degrees of their divergence.

Estimates of neuron numbers have been useful in studies of neurodegenerative disorders, and in their animal models, and in the computational modeling of hippocampal function. Although the retrohippocampal region (presubiculum, parasubiculum, and entorhinal area) is an integral part of the hippocampal circuitry and is affected selectively in a number of disorders, estimates of neuron numbers in the rat retrohippocampal region have yet to be published. Such data are necessary ingredients for computational models of the function of this region and will also facilitate a comparison of this region in rats and primates, which will help to determine how well we may expect rat models to predict function and dysfunction in primate brains. In the present study, we used the optical fractionator to estimate the number of neurons in the rat retrohippocampal region. The following estimates were obtained: 3.3 x 10(5) in presubicular layers II and III, 1.5 x 10(5) in parasubicular layers II and III, 2.2 x 10(5) in the combined pre- and parasubicular layers V and VI, 6.6 x 10(4) in medial entorhinal area (MEA) layer II, 1.3 x 10(5) in MEA layer III, 1.9 x 10(5) in MEA layers V and VI, 4.6 x 10(4) in lateral entorhinal area (LEA) layer II, 1.2 x 10(5) in LEA layer III, and 1.4 x 10(5) in LEA layers V and VI. A surprising finding was the large numbers of neurons in the pre- and parasubiculum, which indicate an important role of these areas in the control of the entorhino-hippocampal projection. A comparison of the numbers of neurons in the hippocampus and entorhinal areas in rats with similar estimates in humans revealed that gross input-output relations are largely conserved. Differences between rats and humans may be accounted for by more prominent entorhino-neocortical projections in primates and consequent increases in the number of neurons in the hippocampus and retrohippocampal region, which are dedicated to these projections.

1. The present study aimed to determine the feasibility of conducting a 5 year cardiovascular outcome trial of the treatment of 6000 elderly hypertensive patients in Australian general practices. 2. General practitioners (GPs) were invited to participate by mail and personal follow-up. Patient records were reviewed to identify subjects for a blood pressure (BP) screening programme. Blood pressure was measured on three occasions and eligible subjects were included if the average BP wasor = 160 mmHg systolic oror = 90 mmHg diastolic if systolic BP wasor = 140 mmHg. 3. Seven hundred and forty-one GPs were approached and 89 were enrolled in the study (12% of mail invites and 75% of those receiving a personal contact). In 16 practices where screening was completed, 82,000 records were reviewed to identify 4% patients eligible for screening. Twenty-two per cent of eligible subjects attended screening. Of 1938 subjects screened, 180 (9%) had BPor = 160/90 mmHg. Forty-seven per cent of subjects (n = 916) were receiving antihypertensive therapy and 184 (20%) were withdrawn from therapy. One hundred and sixteen (63%) of these subjects had BP return to study entry levels within 6 weeks. Fifty-seven newly diagnosed and 81 previously treated subjects were randomized (7% of the screened population). 4. Based on the high participation rate of GPs, the response rate of patients to attend a BP screening programme and the 7% randomization to screening ratio for entry into the study, the ANBP2 pilot study has demonstrated that it is feasible to recruit subjects from Australian general practices to a cardiovascular outcome trial.

In cell lines derived from patients with multiple myeloma (MM) we have found an elevation in the amount of the c-myc protein which is not accompanied by an increase in the level of mRNA or a change in the half-life of the protein. There is a 3.4 fold enhancement in the degree of association of the c-myc message with polysomes. This is not accompanied by an alteration in polysome size or a change in the transit time of the c-myc mRNA on the polysomes thus suggesting that there is in increase in the degree of mobilisation of the c-myc message. Sequencing of the c-myc 5'UTR has revealed the presence of a mutation in all the MM cell lines studied and we demonstrate that this mutation causes altered binding of cellular proteins to this RNA species.

There is accumulating evidence for association between genetic polymorphisms of components of the renin angiotensin system (RAS), especially angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), and cardiovascular disease. However, there is lack of agreement that the ACE polymorphism is associated with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in hypertension. A possible paradigm for the development of LVH involves the ACE gene polymorphism influencing cardiac mass by an action on plasma and/or tissue levels of angiotensin II. Such a model has experimental support and provides the basis for examining the lack of agreement between studies. The finding of lack of association between RAS gene polymorphism and LVH may be due to methodological problems, differences in genetic background between populations, interactions between genetic variants of RAS components or to the model being inappropriate. Low predictability of ACE genotype markers for LVH together with conflicting reports on the influence of RAS genetic variants on angiotensin II production suggests that the simple RAS paradigm may not apply for hypertension. Further information on the nature of the link between the ACE polymorphism and ACE regulation as well as the relation between the RAS and pathophysiology of LVH is needed. At present there is insufficient evidence to accept ACE gene polymorphism as a susceptibility marker for LVH.

Somatostatin-containing neurons of the striatum constitute fewer than 5% of the total neuronal population. Their involvement in the feedforward inhibition of the spiny projection neurons, the modulation of other interneurons, and the regulation of regional blood flow indicates that this small population of neurons plays an important role in the processing of information in the striatum. As a first step in developing a quantitative structural framework within which a more rigorous analysis can be made of the functional circuitry of the striatum, we used modern unbiased stereological techniques to make estimates of the total number of neurons expressing mRNA for somatostatin in the striatum of rats. The strategy developed involved the application of the optical fractionator technique to relatively thick tissue sections that were hybridized in situ with a relatively short oligonucleotide probe conjugated to a nonradioactive reporter molecule. The approach is generally applicable to other subpopulations of in situ hybridized cells in other parts of the brain and can provide a link between molecular neurobiology and stereology. The mean total number of neurons on one side of the striatum was estimated to be 21,300. An analysis of the sampling scheme indicated that counting no more than 200 neurons in a systematic sample of not more than 15 sections per individual results in an estimate with a precision that is more than sufficient for comparative and experimental studies. The issues that must be considered when analyzing in situ hybridized tissue with modern stereological methods, the interpretive caveats inherent in the resulting data, and the unique perspectives provided by data like that presented here for striatal somatostatin neurons are discussed.

Both clinical and epidemiological studies of the effects of exposure to toluene have shown that long-term exposure may result in chronic toxic encephalopathy, where one of the major symptoms is memory deficits. We have attempted to identify the structural basis of the toxic effects of toluene in the hippocampus, a region of the brain known to be involved in learning and memory processes and well suited for stereological analysis. Rats were exposed to 1500 ppm of toluene, six hours per day, five days per week for six months. This was followed by a four-month-period without exposure prior to sacrifice. The total number of neurons in each of the five subdivisions of hippocampus of six exposed and six control rats was estimated with the optical fractionator. A statistically significant neuron loss of 16% was found in regio inferior (CA3 and CA2) of the exposed rats.

The causal relationship between the neurodegenerative changes that accompany normal ageing and those that characterize Alzheimer's disease is unclear. The high incidence of Alzheimer's disease associated with old age and the presence of its neuropathological signs in non-demented older individuals suggest that these two phenomena involve the same neurodegenerative processes and mechanisms and that Alzheimer's disease is an extension of normal ageing. On the other hand, the identification of environmental and genetic risk factors associated with Alzheimer's disease suggests the involvement of a specific disease process that is not related to normal ageing. The resolution of this fundamental issue is of importance in the design of investigative and therapeutic strategies. In this report, we describe differences in the regional patterns of neuronal loss, in the hippocampal region of the brains of Alzheimer's patients and normal ageing subjects, that indicate that Alzheimer's disease is not the manifestation of accelerated ageing, but the expression of a distinct pathological process.

We study the globular cluster (GC) systems in three representative fossil group galaxies: the nearest (NGC6482), the prototype (NGC1132) and the most massive known to date (ESO306-017). This is the first systematic study of GC systems in fossil groups. Using data obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys in the F475W and F850LP filters, we determine the GC color and magnitude distributions, surface number density profiles, and specific frequencies. In all three systems, the GC color distribution is bimodal, the GCs are spatially more extended than the starlight, and the red population is more concentrated than the blue. The specific frequencies seem to scale with the optical luminosities of the central galaxy and span a range similar to that of the normal bright elliptical galaxies in rich environments. We also analyze the galaxy surface brightness distributions to look for deviations from the best-fit S\'ersic profiles; we find evidence of recent dynamical interaction in all three fossil group galaxies. Using X-ray data from the literature, we find that luminosity and metallicity appear to correlate with the number of GCs and their mean color, respectively. Interestingly, although NGC6482 has the lowest mass and luminosity in our sample, its GC system has the reddest mean color, and the surrounding X-ray gas has the highest metallicity., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures. The volumes of the fascia dentata, hilus, regio inferior, regio superior and subiculum of 9 species that differ significantly in size and degree of forebrain evolution have been compared with the intent of identifying phylogenetic trends in the internal organization of the mammalian hippocampus. The study includes data from the hippocampi of a basal insectivore, 2 species of wild mice, 3 commonly used laboratory rodents and 3 species (including man) that resemble an ascending primate series. In addition to comparisons of the absolute and relative volumes, an allometric approach is used to identify "progressive" size differences not related to body size. Both regio superior and hilus become larger during evolution, while fascia dentata and regio inferior maintain a relationship to body size that is similar to that for the hippocampus in basal insectivores. The inter-species differences are discussed in terms of neuron number and size, for which data are presented from two species, and with reference to a neural model of the cognitive map theory for hippocampal function. Special emphasis is placed on the unique aspects of the human hippocampus. The data represents a quantitative morphological framework within which the observations from physiological, biochemical and behavioral studies in laboratory animals can be related to studies of the human hippocampus.

A hybrid computer approach for obtaining approximate closed-form solutions for boundary value problems satisfying the Laplace or Poisson equations under Dirichlet boundary conditions is investigated. The results are compared with those obtained by a digital machine.

Stereology is a set of simple and efficient methods for quantitation of three-dimensional microscopic structures which is specifically tuned to provide reliable data from sections. Within the last few years, a number of new methods has been developed which are of special interest to pathologists. Methods for estimating the volume, surface area and length of any structure are described in this review. The principles on which stereology is based and the necessary sampling procedures are described and illustrated with examples. The necessary equipment, the measurements, and the calculations are invariably simple and easy.
