1. Malnutrition and other factors associated with hospitalization in older adults treated at the naval medical center of Callao - Peru

Abstract: Summary: Purpose: Older adults have a higher risk of malnutrition and hospitalization and, likewise, malnutrition can be a risk factor for hospitalization. The purpose of the present study was to determine the possible association between malnutrition and hospitalization in older adults at the Naval Medical Center “Cirujano Mayor Santiago Távara'' in Peru. Patients and Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted in older adults over 60 years of age attended by the outpatient and Day Clinic during the period 2010–2015. Malnutrition was assessed using the Mini Nutritional Assessment scale. Multivariate analysis of the association between malnutrition and hospitalization with control of confounding variables was performed using a Poisson regression model with robust variance, obtaining an adjusted prevalence ratio (aPR). Results: The study included 1865 older adults. 58.7% were male, and 46% were between 70 and 80 years of age. 16.3% had malnutrition, 80.6% had at least one emergency department visit, and 35.6% were hospitalized at least once. Multivariate analysis showed a statistically significant association between malnutrition and hospitalization (aPR = 3.22; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.56–4.03), as well as between depressive symptoms and hospitalization (aPR = 1.54; 95% CI: 1.23–1.93). On the other hand, emergency department visits were associated with a lower frequency of hospitalization (aPR = 0.70; 95% CI: 0.54–0.90). Conclusion: Malnutrition and depressive symptoms were associated with hospitalization in retired naval personnel and their families at the Naval Medical Center, while emergency department visits constituted a protective factor.

2. Phytoplankton distribution in unusually low sea ice cover over the Pacific Arctic

Abstract: A large part of the Pacific Arctic basin experiences ice-free conditions in summer as a result of sea ice cover steadily decreasing over the last decades. To evaluate the impact of sea ice retreat on the marine ecosystem, phytoplankton in situ observations were acquired over the Chukchi shelf and the Canadian basin in 2008, a year of high melting. Pigment analyses and taxonomy enumerations were used to characterise the distribution of main phytoplanktonic groups. Marked spatial variability of the phytoplankton distribution was observed in summer 2008. Comparison of eight phytoplankton functional groups and 3 size-classes (pico-, nano- and micro-phytoplankton) also showed significant differences in abundance, biomass and distribution between summer of low ice cover (2008) and heavy ice summer (1994). Environmental parameters such as freshening, stratification, light and nutrient availability are discussed as possible causes to explain the observed differences in phytoplankton community structure between 1994 and 2008.

5. Bayesian Spatial Split-Population Survival Model with Applications to Democratic Regime Failure and Civil War Recurrence

Abstract: The underlying risk factors associated with the duration and termination of biological, sociological, economic, or political processes often exhibit spatial clustering. However, existing nonspatial survival models, including those that account for “immune” and “at-risk” subpopulations, assume that these baseline risks are spatially independent, leading to inaccurate inferences in split-population survival settings. In this paper, we develop a Bayesian spatial split-population survival model that addresses these methodological challenges by accounting for spatial autocorrelation among units in terms of their probability of becoming immune and their survival rates. Monte Carlo experiments demonstrate that, unlike nonspatial models, this spatial model provides accurate parameter estimates in the presence of spatial autocorrelation. Applying our spatial model to data from published studies on authoritarian reversals and civil war recurrence reveals that accounting for spatial autocorrelation in split-population models leads to new empirical insights, reflecting the need to theoretically and statistically account for space and non-failure inflation in applied research.

6. Security Consolidation in the Aftermath of Civil War: Explaining the Fates of Victorious Militias

Abstract: Policymakers and peacebuilding research often focus on rebel groups when studying demobilization and integration processes, but post-war governments must also manage the non-state militias that helped them gain or maintain power. Why do some post-war governments disintegrate their militia allies, while others integrate them into the military? We argue that when a salient ethnic difference exists between the (new) ruling elite and an allied militia, a process of mutual uncertainty in the post-war period will incentivize governments to disintegrate the group. However, governments will be most likely to integrate their militias when the military has sufficient coercive capabilities but few organizational hindrances to re-organizing. Using new data on the post-war fates of victorious militias across all civil conflicts from 1989 to 2014, we find robust support for these claims. The results suggest that a government’s optimal militia management strategy is shaped by both social and organizational constraints during the post-war period.

Abstract: Background: Oxidative stress plays an essential role in the vascular tone in hypertension; however, the mechanisms remain unclear. Aim: This study aimed to determine the antioxidant effect of tempol and vitamin C (Vit-C) on the basal tone and vascular remodeling of the aorta in nitric oxide (NO) deficiency-induced hypertensive rats. Method: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were induced to hypertension by Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME). Animals were randomized as follows: vehicle (Control: CR), CR-tempol, CR-Vit-C, L-NAME, L-NAME-tempol, and L-NAME-Vit-C. After 6 weeks of treatment, the basal aortic tone was evaluated by sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and calcium-free medium. Endothelial function, NO, reduced-to-oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) ratio, resting membrane potential (mP), and vascular remodeling were also measured. Results: L-NAME rats showed an increased basal tone that was blunted by both SNP (−547 ± 69; n = 7 vs. CR: −7.5 ± 6.7 mg; n = 7; p < 0.001) and calcium-free medium. Tempol or Vit-C did not reverse hypertension, and the high basal tone was decreased only with tempol. In L-NAME rats, only tempol partially improved endothelial function, GSH-to-GSSG ratio, mP values, and vascular remodeling. Conclusions: Tempol decreased calcium-dependent basal aortic tone and improved vascular homeostasis in L-NAME rats. Vit-C did not lead to a similar effect, suggesting that alterations in the superoxide dismutase pathway may play a role in the basal aortic tone.

Abstract: The mass of the W boson, a mediator of the weak force between elementary particles, is tightly constrained by the symmetries of the standard model of particle physics. The Higgs boson was the last missing component of the model. After observation of the Higgs boson, a measurement of the W boson mass provides a stringent test of the model. We measure the W boson mass, MW, using data corresponding to 8.8 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected in proton-antiproton collisions at a 1.96 tera-electron volt center-of-mass energy with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. A sample of approximately 4 million W boson candidates is used to obtain MW ¼ 80;433:5 T 6:4stat T 6:9syst ¼ 80;433:5 T 9:4 MeV=c2, the precision of which exceeds that of all previous measurements combined (stat, statistical uncertainty; syst, systematic uncertainty; MeV, mega-electron volts; c, speed of light in a vacuum). 11. A novel endothelium-independent effect of insulin on basal vascular tone in cafeteria diet-induced hypertensive rats

Abstract: Insulin vasorelaxant effect in metabolic syndrome has been shown on precontracted vessels. However, the insulin effects on basal vascular tone and its interrelationship with nitric oxide (NO) and K-channels are unknown. To test the effect of insulin on the basal vascular tone in isolated aortic rings from the cafeteria diet-induced hypertensive rats and to determine the role of NO and K-channels on this insulin effect. Male Wistar rats were randomized into two groups: one group fed with a cafeteria diet (CafR) and another fed with a standard chow diet (control rats: CR). Then, in isolated aortic rings, the insulin effect on the basal tone and the role of K-channels were evaluated. Also, the endothelial function, NO levels, and resting membrane potential were measured. CafR increased blood pressure (138 ± 6.2 mmHg; n = 9 vs. CR: 109 ± 1.4 mmHg; n = 9; p 0.001) and vascular basal tone. Insulin 400 mU/ml reduced basal tone in aortic rings (-284 ± 47 mg; n = 9). 12. Insulinoma masquerading as neurologic disease – Case report and review of the literature

Abstract: Introduction: Insulinomas are the most frequent cause of hypoglycemia in non-diabetic patients and the most common functional endocrine pancreatic tumors. Symptoms of hypoglycemia are nonspecific so the diagnosis may be challenging. Case report: A 36-year-old male was admitted in the emergency room with hypoglycemia. The patient recalled symptoms of diaphoresis and blurred vision for the past 4 months, sometimes with loss of consciousness and incontinence of urinary sphincter. He was diagnosed with epilepsy and started on anticonvulsive drugs. These symptoms occurred before meals, were relieved with eating carbon hydrates and were associated with weight gain. Prolonged supervised fasting test was applied and led to symptomatic hypoglycemia with hyperinsulinemia. Abdominal magnetic resonance demonstrated a well-defined enhanced lesion in the pancreatic tail. Nodule enucleation was performed by laparoscopy and pathological examination was compatible with insulinoma. Shortly after surgical treatment, glucose levels increased to the normal range. Conclusion: The diagnosis of insulinoma may be difficult due to its rarity and variable clinical presentation. Other diseases, such as neurologic, may be considered first, but it’s important to consider the diagnosis since chronic and severe hypoglycemia can be fatal and the surgery is usually curative.

13. A Bayesian Split Population Survival Model for Duration Data With Misclassified Failure Events

Abstract: We develop a new Bayesian split population survival model for the analysis of survival data with misclassified event failures. Within political science survival data, right-censored survival cases are often erroneously misclassified as failure cases due to measurement error. Treating these cases as failure events within survival analyses will underestimate the duration of some events. This will bias coefficient estimates, especially in situations where such misclassification is associated with covariates of interest. Our split population survival estimator addresses this challenge by using a system of two equations to explicitly model the misclassification of failure events alongside a parametric survival process of interest. After deriving this model, we use Bayesian estimation via slice sampling to evaluate its performance with simulated data, and in several political science applications. We find that our proposed “misclassified failure” survival model allows researchers to accurately account for misclassified failure events within the contexts of civil war duration and democratic survival.

Abstract: Coronavirus - 2019 (COVID-19)-a respiratory syndrome caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV2)-is responsible for the world's latest pandemic unlike any seen since the 1980s HIV/AIDs pandemic. While significant effort has been made towards acute management, long-term management has received less attention. To address this, our study identified patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and recorded the time to enrollment into a formal pulmonary rehabilitation program at an academic center;the differences in time allowed us to assess whether earlier enrollment led to differences in physiologic and psychologic outcomes. First, we hypothesize that enrollment into a pulmonary rehabilitation program is essential to a patient's long term treatment and management of post-infectious, chronic COVID-19 symptoms. Second, we aim to demonstrate that early participation leads to improvements in dyspnea, anxiety and depression as supported by the UCSD SOBQ, GAD-7 and PHQ-9 scores respectively. Through chart review, we collected data from 24 patients enrolled in a post-COVID recovery program centered around pulmonary rehabilitation at an academic medical center in Texas. We administered: (1) pulmonary function test (PFT);(2) University of California - San Diego (UCSD) Dyspnea Questionnaire;and (3) six-minute walk (6MW) tests when a patient entered and completed the program. We used this data to assess for subjective and objective changes in respiratory function postrehabilitation. To analyze the indirect benefits of pulmonary rehabilitation on mental health effects of COVID-19, we used the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 (GAD7) and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ9) questionnaires to evaluate a patients' anxiety and depression respectively at the same time points. Our results showed that it took patients an average 67.8 days to initiate rehabilitation after initial diagnosis. 13 of 24 patients began rehab earlier than the average and had an average decrease in UCSD SOBQ score of 35.6 and 6MW increase of 64.5 m compared to the group averages of 17.8 and 74.7 m respectively. The average initial GAD7 and PHQ9 scores were 6.7 and 8.7, with an average decrease of 1.5 and 2.2 respectively. Through our study, we highlight the benefit of early initiation of pulmonary rehabilitation in the post-COVID 19 recovery period. Through both subjective and objective measurements of patient respiratory function and mental health, our study supports inclusion and standardization of early pulmonary rehabilitation as a component of COVID-19 recovery.

Abstract: At the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton (pp¯) collider, high-mass electron-neutrino (eν) pairs are produced predominantly in the process pp¯→W(→eν)+X. The asymmetry of the electron and positron yield as a function of their pseudorapidity constrain the slope of the ratio of the u- to d-quark parton distributions versus the fraction of the proton momentum carried by the quarks. This paper reports on the measurement of the electron-charge asymmetry using the full data set recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab in 2001-2011 and corresponding to 9.1 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. The measurement significantly improves the precision of the Tevatron constraints on the parton-distribution functions of the proton. Numerical tables of the measurement are provided. © 2021 authors. Abstract: BACKGROUND: The Lung Volume Reduction Coil Treatment in Patients With Emphysema (RENEW) trial reported improvements in quality of life, pulmonary function, and exercise performance following endobronchial coil treatment.OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this post hoc analysis was to identify baseline predictors, including quantitative CT measures, that identify patients most likely to significantly benefit from endobronchial coil therapy.METHODS: Quantitative CT analysis by an independent radiology laboratory and a qualitative evaluation by five blinded experts of the baseline thoracic CT imaging were performed. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to elucidate characteristics associated with clinical response.RESULTS: In total, 125 patients underwent coil treatment and had evaluable 12-month follow-up results. Of these, 78 patients received treatment of lobes with the highest emphysematous destruction determined by quantitative CT analysis (quantitative visual match [QVM]+), and 47 received treatment in at least one lobe that was not the most destroyed (QVM-). From the 78 patients with QVM+ treatment, a subgroup of 50 patients (64%) was identified with baseline residual volume > 200% predicted, emphysema score > 20% low attenuation area, and absence of airway disease. In this subgroup, greater lobar residual volume reduction in the treated lobes was achieved, which was associated with significant mean +/- SE improvement in FEV1 (15.2 +/- 3.1%), St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire (-12 +/- 2 points), and residual volume (-0.57 +/- 0.13 L).DISCUSSION: This post hoc analysis found that both significant hyperinflation (residual volume >= 200% predicted) and CT analysis are critical for patient selection and treatment planning for endobronchial coil therapy. Abstract: We report on a search for a spin-zero non-standard model particle in proton-antiproton collisions collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at a center-of-mass-energy of 1.96 TeV. This particle, the φ boson, is expected to decay into a bottom-antibottom quark pair and to be produced in association with at least one bottom quark. The data sample consists of events with three jets identified as initiated by bottom quarks and corresponds to 5.4 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. In each event, the invariant mass of the two most energetic jets is studied by looking for deviations from the multijet background, which is modeled using data. No evidence is found for such a particle. Exclusion upper limits ranging from 20 to 2 pb are set for the product of production cross sections times branching fraction for the hypothetical φ boson with mass between 100 and 300 GeV/c2. These are the most stringent constraints to date. © 2019 authors. Published by the American Physical Society.

Abstract: RNase P protein subunits Rpp29, POP1, and Rpp21 interact with histone H3.3 upstream of nucleosome deposition, suggesting that a variant of this enzyme regulates H3.3 function. Rpp29 knockdown increases H3.3 chromatin incorporation, suggesting that it represses H3.3 nucleosome deposition, which has important implications for epigenetic regulation., In mammals, histone H3.3 is a critical regulator of transcription state change and heritability at both euchromatin and heterochromatin. The H3.3-specific chaperone, DAXX, together with the chromatin-remodeling factor, ATRX, regulates H3.3 deposition and transcriptional silencing at repetitive DNA, including pericentromeres and telomeres. However, the events that precede H3.3 nucleosome incorporation have not been fully elucidated. We previously showed that the DAXX-ATRX-H3.3 pathway regulates a multi-copy array of an inducible transgene that can be visualized in single living cells. When this pathway is impaired, the array can be robustly activated. H3.3 is strongly recruited to the site during activation where it accumulates in a complex with transcribed sense and antisense RNA, which is distinct from the DNA/chromatin. This suggests that transcriptional events regulate H3.3 recruited to its incorporation sites. Here we report that the nucleolar RNA proteins Rpp29, fibrillarin, and RPL23a are also components of this H3.3/RNA complex. Rpp29 is a protein subunit of RNase P. Of the other subunits, POP1 and Rpp21 are similarly recruited suggesting that a variant of RNase P regulates H3.3 chromatin assembly. Rpp29 knockdown increases H3.3 chromatin incorporation, which suggests that Rpp29 represses H3.3 nucleosome deposition, a finding with implications for epigenetic regulation.

Abstract: The onset of ductile fracture can be described by a simple damage parameter, which accounts for the accumulation of damage under arbitrary deformation. The damage parameter is usually given as integral form of strain over loading history which also has been described as a function of stress state. While the evolution of strain field can be experimentally determined using digital image correlation, experimental measurement of the multiaxial stress state is still a challenging task. Therefore, various uncoupled fracture criteria rely on stress states calculated from phenomenological plasticity model. As a result, the number of mechanical tests required to calibrate the fracture criterion may significantly increase when an anisotropic constitutive model is used. We propose an alternative approach on the basis of a mean field crystal plasticity (VPSC) model, which accounts for the microstructural features such as slip system, crystallographic texture and its evolution. While stress fields can be obtained from the use of full-field crystal plasticity framework, the proposed method utilizes the mean field crystal plasticity framework and repeat the stress estimation on various spatially resolved locations to which DIC technique provides strain history. The repeated VPSC calculations at various locations efficiently provide the map of stress evolution. The resulting map of spatially resolved stress response is further validated by comparing with the bulge stress strain curves.

Abstract: The central nervous system (CNS) has very limited potential for regeneration and repair so many neurological disorders can cause permanent functional sequelae. One strategy to improve functional recovery is to use exogenous supplementation of stem cells. Therapeutic effects of stem cells are being segmented using new gene therapy technologies. Stem cell-based gene therapy is a novel technology that maximizes the therapeutic effects of stem cells by engineering them to express therapeutic genes specific to the pathophysiology of the target disorder. This method combines the advantages of stem cell and gene therapy together: Regeneration of functional neural tissue by stem cells and modulation of pathophysiology by therapeutic genes. Many current studies are aimed at overcoming the obstacles to stem cell-based gene therapy and moving these novel treatments into the clinic. Here, we review the current status of stem cell-based gene therapy against neurological diseases and discuss critical issues in the development of stem cell-based gene therapy, including both technical and regulatory issues.

Abstract: A search for the exotic meson X(5568) decaying into the B-s(0)pi(+/-) final state is performed using data corresponding to 9.6 fb(-1) from pp collisions at root s = 1960 GeV recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. No evidence for this state is found and an upper limit of 6.7% at the 95% confidence level is set on the fraction of B-s(0) produced through the X(5568) -> B-s(0)pi(+/-) process.

Abstract: This paper presents a study of the production of a single W boson in association with one or more jets in proton-antiproton collisions at s=1.96 TeV, using the entire data set collected in 2001-2011 by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at the Tevatron, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9.0 fb-1. The W boson is identified through its leptonic decays into electron and muon. The production cross sections are measured for each leptonic decay mode and combined after testing that the ratio of the W(→μν)+jets cross section to the W(→eν)+jets cross section agrees with the hypothesis of e-μ lepton universality. The combination of measured cross sections, differential in the inclusive jet multiplicity (W+≥N jets with N=1, 2, 3, or 4) and in the transverse energy of the leading jet, are compared with theoretical predictions. © 2018 authors.

Abstract: The Collider Detector at Fermilab collected a unique sample of jets originating from bottom-quark fragmentation (b-jets) by selecting online proton-antiproton (p (p) over bar) collisions with a vertex displaced from p (p) over bar interaction point, consistent with the decay of a bottom-quark hadron. This data set, collected at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb(-1), is used to measure the Z-boson production cross section times branching ratio into b (b) over bar. The number of Z -> b (b) over bar events is determined by fitting the dijet-mass distribution, while constraining the dominant b-jet background, originating from QCD multijet events, with data. The result, sigma(p(p)over bar> -> Z) x B(Z -> b (b) over bar) = 1.11 +/- 0.08(stat) +/- 0.14(syst) nb, is the most precise measurement of this process, and is consistent with the standard-model prediction. The data set is also used to search for Higgs-boson production. No significant signal is expected in our data and the first upper limit on the cross section for the inclusive p(p)over bar>-> H -> b (b) over bar process at root s = 1.96 TeV is set, corresponding to 33 times the expected standard-model cross section, or sigma = 40.6 pb, at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract: We report on a measurement of the D+ -meson production cross section as a function of transverse momentum (p(T)) in proton-antiproton (p (p) over bar) collisions at 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy, using the full data set collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab in Tevatron Run II and corresponding to 10 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity. We use D-broken vertical bar -> K- pi(broken vertical bar) pi(broken vertical bar) decays fully reconstructed in the central rapidity region broken vertical bar y broken vertical bar < 1 with transverse momentum down to 1.5 GeV/c, a range previously unexplored in p collisions. Inelastic p (p) over bar -scattering events are selected online using minimally biasing requirements followed by an optimized offline selection. The K- pi(+) pi(+) mass distribution is used to identify the D+ signal, and the D+ transverse impact-parameter distribution is used to separate prompt production, occurring directly in the hard-scattering process, from secondary production from b-hadron decays. We obtain a prompt D+ signal of 2950 candidates corresponding to a total cross section sigma(D+), 1.5 < P-T < 14.5 GeV/c, vertical bar y vertical bar < 1) = 71.9 +/- 6.8 (stat) +/- 9.3 (syst) mu b.While the measured cross sections are consistent with theoretical estimates in each p(T) bin, the shape of the observed p(T) spectrum is softer than the expectation from quantum chromodynamics. The results are unique in p collisions and can improve the shape and uncertainties of future predictions.

Abstract: Summary Background Maintenance of water balance in the stratum corneum (SC) is determined by the content of intercellular lipids and natural moisturizing factors (NMFs) in corneocytes. Aim To investigate the association between the NMFs and (pro)filaggrin and the proteases responsible for the processing of (pro)filaggrin to NMFs in the SC of hydrated and dry skin areas of healthy human subjects. Methods The SC hydration state and the transepidermal water loss (TEWL) were measured using a Corneometer and a Tewameter, respectively. Proteases, (pro)filaggrin and NMFs were extracted from SC samples obtained by tape-stripping of the tested skin. Expression levels of (pro)filaggrin were determined by dot blotting and western blotting, and total NMFs by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography. Expression of the proteases caspase-14, calpain-1 and bleomycin hydrolase was measured by western blotting. Results The levels of (pro)filaggrin were not significantly different between hydrated and dry skin, whereas the level of total NMFs was significantly reduced in dry skin. Abstract: This paper intends to establish the possibility on the application of a hybrid (CO2 laser+GMA) welding process to austenite stainless steel (STS304L) by clarifying the bead profiles and mechanical characteristics of the hybrid welded joints. Moreover, the residual stress, plastic strain characteristics and their production mechanism of the welded joints were examined by thermal elastic-plastic analysis. The visual test of the welds was classified as quite stringent (Quality B′) in quality for weld imperfections in terms of four items (reinforcement, backbead, undercut and bead uniformity of the weld). The tensile strength of the hybrid welded joints was approximately 546 MPa, which satisfied the classification requirements. The hardness of the hybrid welded joints was within the acceptable range (the maximum value 340–360 HV).

Abstract: Renal preglomerular vessels play a central role in modulating renal function and injury, especially during conditions of renal hemodynamic stress such as hypertension. We evaluated whether improving the balance between nitric oxide (NO) and oxidative stress improves the morphological alterations of renal afferent arterioles that occur in NO deficiencyinduced hypertension. We measured indices of NO and oxidative stress and evaluated renal morphology and afferent arteriolar remodeling in rats treated with vehicle, L-NAME or L-NAME plus tempol (a superoxide dismutase mimetic) for 6 weeks. L-NAME-treated rats had hypertension, lower urinary and renal NO indices, higher renal cortical levels of TBARS, GSSG and GSSG/GSH. This was associated with significant eutrophic inward remodeling of the afferent arterioles; they had a marked decrease in arteriolar lumen area and a striking increase in arteriolar wall thickness and media to lumen ratio. Tempol did not significantly reduce blood pressure, but increased NO levels, decreased oxidative stress and partially blunted L-NAME-induced remodeling of afferent arterioles. L-NAME-induced remodeling of afferent arterioles is blunted by tempol. This beneficial effect on remodeling is associated with increases in NO indices, decreases in oxidative stress, without significant decreases in blood pressure. Abstract: We report a measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry, A(FB), in b (b) over bar pairs produced in proton-antiproton collisions and identified by muons from semileptonic b-hadron decays. The event sample is collected at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 1.96 TeV with the CDF II detector and corresponds to 6.9 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity. We obtain an integrated asymmetry of A(FB)(b (b) over bar) = (1.2 +/- 0.7)% at the particle level for b-quark pairs with invariant mass, m(b (b) over bar), down to 40 GeV/c(2) and measure the dependence of A(FB)(b (b) over bar) on m(b (b) over bar). The results are compatible with expectations from the standard model.

Abstract: A measurement of vector boson (V) production in conjunction with a D*(2010)(+) meson is presented. Using a data sample corresponding to 9.7 fb(-1) of proton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energy root s = 1.96 TeV produced by the Fermilab Tevatron, we reconstruct V + D*+ samples with the CDF II detector. The D*+ is fully reconstructed in the D*(2010)(+) -> D-0 (-> K-pi(+))pi(+) decay mode. This technique is sensitive to the associated production of vector boson plus charm or bottom mesons. We measure the ratio of production cross sections sigma(W + D*) = sigma(W) = [1.75 +/- 0.13(stat) +/- 0.09(stat)]% and sigma(Z + D*)/sigma(Z) = [1.5 +/- 0.4(stat) +/- 0.2(stat)]% and perform a differential measurement of d sigma(W + D*)/dp(T)(D*). Event properties are utilized to determine the fraction of V + D*(2010)(+) events originating from different production processes. The results are in agreement with the predictions obtained with the PYTHIA program, limiting possible contribution from non-standard-model physics processes.

Abstract: At the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton (p (p) over bar) collider, Drell-Yan lepton pairs are produced in the process p (p) over bar -> e(+)e(-) + X through an intermediate gamma*/Z boson. The forward-backward asymmetry in the polar-angle distribution of the e(-) as a function of the e(+)e(-)-pair mass is used to obtain sin(2) theta(lept)(eff), the effective leptonic determination of the electroweak-mixing parameter sin(2) theta(W). The measurement sample, recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF), corresponds to 9.4 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity from p (p) over bar collisions at a center-of-momentum energy of 1.96 TeV, and is the full CDF Run II data set. The value of sin(2) theta(lept)(eff) is found to be 0.23248 +/- 0.00053. The combination with the previous CDF measurement based on mu(+)mu(-) pairs yields sin(2) theta(lept)(eff) = 0.23221 +/- 0.00046. This result, when interpreted within the specified context of the standard model assuming sin(2) theta(W) = 1 - M-W(2)/M-Z(2) and that the W- and Z-boson masses are on-shell, yields sin(2) theta(W) = 0.22400 +/- 0.00045, or equivalently a W-boson mass of 80.328 +/- 0.024 GeV/c(2).

Abstract: We measure the forward-backward asymmetry of the production of top-quark and antiquark pairs in proton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energy root s = 1.96 TeV using the full data set collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) in Tevatron Run II corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.1 fb(-1). The asymmetry is characterized by the rapidity difference between top quarks and antiquarks (Delta y) and measured in the final state with two charged leptons (electrons and muons). The inclusive asymmetry, corrected to the entire phase space at parton level, is measured to be A(FB)(t (t) over bar) = 0.12 +/- 0.13, consistent with the expectations from the standard model (SM) and previous CDF results in the final state with a single charged lepton. The combination of the CDF measurements of the inclusive A(FB)(t (t) over bar) in both final states yields A(FB)(t (t) over bar) 0.160 +/- 0.045, which is consistent with the SM predictions. We also measure the differential asymmetry as a function of Delta y. A linear fit to A(FB)(t (t) over bar) (vertical bar Delta y vertical bar),assuming zero asymmetry at Delta y = 0, yields a slope of alpha = 0.14 +/- 0.15, consistent with the SM prediction and the previous CDF determination in the final state with a single charged lepton. The combined slope of A(FB)(t (t) over bar) (vertical bar Delta y vertical bar) the two final states is alpha = 0.227 +/- 0.057, which is 2.0 sigma larger than the SM prediction.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the total WW and WZ production cross sections in pp collision at s=1.96 TeV, in a final state consistent with leptonic W boson decay and jets originating from heavy-flavor quarks from either a W or a Z boson decay. This analysis uses the full data set collected with the CDF II detector during Run II of the Tevatron collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb-1. An analysis of the dijet mass spectrum provides 3.7σ evidence of the summed production processes of either WW or WZ bosons with a measured total cross section of σWW+WZ=13.7±3.9 pb. Independent measurements of the WW and WZ production cross sections are allowed by the different heavy-flavor decay patterns of the W and Z bosons and by the analysis of secondary-decay vertices reconstructed within heavy-flavor jets. The productions of WW and of WZ dibosons are independently seen with significances of 2.9σ and 2.1σ, respectively, with total cross sections of σWW=9.4±4.2 pb and σWZ=3.7-2.2+2.5 pb. Abstract: A search for a Higgs boson with suppressed couplings to fermions, h(f), assumed to be the neutral, lower-mass partner of the Higgs boson discovered at the Large Hadron Collider, is reported. Such a Higgs boson could exist in extensions of the standard model with two Higgs doublets, and could be produced via p (p) over bar -> H(+/-)h(f) -> W*h(f)h(f) -> 4 gamma + X where H (+/-) is a charged Higgs boson. This analysis uses all events withat least three photons in the final state from proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.2 fb(-1). No evidence of a signal is observed in the data. Values of Higgs-boson masses between 10 and 100 GeV/c(2) are excluded at 95% Bayesian credibility.

Abstract: We describe a measurement of the ratio of the cross sections times branching fractions of the B-c(+) meson in the decay mode B-c(+) -> J/psi mu(+)nu to the B+ meson in the decay mode B+ -> J/psi K+ in proton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energy root s = 1.96 TeV. The measurement is based on the complete CDF Run II data set, which comes from an integrated luminosity of 8.7 fb(-1). The ratio of the production cross sections times branching fractions for B-c(+) and B+ mesons with momentum transverse to the beam greater than 6 GeV/c and rapidity magnitude smaller than 0.6 is 0.211 +/- 0.012(stat)(-0.020)(+0.021)(syst). Using the known B+ -> J/psi K+ branching fraction, the known B+ production cross section, and a selection of the predicted B-c(+) -> J/psi mu(+nu) branching fractions, the range for the total B-c(+) production cross section is estimated.

Abstract: Background and Objectives: Text summarization plays an essential role in reducing time and cost in many domains such as medicine, engineering, etc. On the other hand, manual summarization requires much time. So, we need an automated system for summarizing. How to select sentences is critical in summarizing. Summarization techniques that have been introduced in recent years are usually greedy in the choice of sentences, which leads to a decrease in the quality of the summary. In this paper, a non-greedily method for selecting essential sentences from a text is presented.Methods: The present paper presents a method based on a generative adversarial network and attention mechanism called GAN-AM for extractive summarization. Generative adversarial networks have two generator and discriminator networks whose parameters are independent of each other. First, the features of the sentences are extracted by two traditional and embedded methods. We extract 12 traditional features. Some of these features are extracted from sentence words and others from the sentence. In addition, we use the well-known Skip-Gram model for embedding. Then, the features are entered into the generator as a condition, and the generator calculates the probability of each sentence in summary. A discriminator is used to check the generated summary of the generator and to strengthen its performance. We introduce a new loss function for discriminator training that includes generator output, real and fake summaries of each document. During training and testing, each document enters the generator with different noises. It allows the generator to see many combinations of sentences that are suitable for quality summaries.Results: We evaluate our results on CNN/Daily Mail and Medical datasets. Summaries produced by the generator show that our model performs better than other methods compared based on the ROUGE metric. We apply different sizes of noise to the generator to check the effect of noise on our model. The results indicate that the noise-free model has poor results.Conclusion: Unlike recent works, in our method, the generator selects sentences non-greedily. Experimental results show that the generator with noise can produce summaries that are related to the main subject.

Abstract: Previously, our group showed a prothrombotic state in asymptomatic patients with chronic Chagas disease. The current paper studies the inflammatory status and endothelial function in these patients. Methods: In 40 patients and 40 healthy volunteers, we evaluated prothrombotic state, blood parasitemia (molecular biology: polymerized chain reaction [PCR]-amplification), tissue factor pathway inhibitor antibodies (aTFPI), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1). Endothelial function was determined by reactive hyperemia (pulse plethysmography). Results: In patients, prothrombin fragment 1 + 2, d-dimer, PAI-1, and fibrinogen were higher. Amplification of 121/122 primers ( Trypanosoma cruzi) was positive in 45% of the patients. Patients presented higher values of aTFPI- immunoglobulin G (IgG; P < .05), aTFPI-IgM ( P < .001), IL-6 ( P = .004), and VCAM-1 ( P = .00001). In both groups, endothelial function was preserved. Conclusions: We found that asymptomatic patients with chronic Chagas disease presented a prothrombotic/inflammatory status. The fact that endothelial function is still preserved suggests that prothrombosis and inflammation are primarily implicated in the beginning of cardiovascular damage.

Abstract: Little is known about the vascular actions of angiotensin II (Ang II) and nitric oxide (NO) in Amphibia. This study investigated (1) Ang II contractility, (2) NO concentrations, and (3) correlations between Ang II contractility, NO concentration and mean arterial pressure (MAP) in isolated Bufo arenarum toad aortic rings. Contractility was measured in isometric conditions, NO concentrations were determined by the Griess reaction, and MAP was determined by a direct method. In isolated toad aortic rings, Ang II produced a contractile response (292.7 ± 89.2 mg; n = 20). Furthermore, a contractile response to norepinephrine (NE) was also obtained. Abstract: There have been tremendous interests about the near-field optical effect through a sub-wavelength size metallic aperture. In this report, the computational experiments using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method has been performed to examine the optical transmission intensity through the small apertures. In the case that the aperture size is very large compared with the wavelength of the light, the diffracted angle is small and the perpendicular component of the propagation vector is greater than the parallel component of the propagation vector. With decreasing the aperture diameter, the diffraction angle becomes greater and the parallel component of the propagation vector becomes greater. For the aperture diameter smaller than the wavelength of the incident light, the conventional diffraction formula no longer becomes valid. The FDTD simulations are performed to obtain the light intensity distribution transmitted through the various diameters of the apertures. Abstract: Adequate neuromuscular block is required throughout laryngeal microsurgery. We hypothesized that the surgical conditions would improve under a deeper level of rocuronium-induced neuromuscular block.Seventy-two patients undergoing laryngeal microsurgery were randomly allocated to either the 'post-tetanic counts 1-2' (PTC1-2) group or the 'train-of-four counts 1-2' (TOFcount1-2) group according to the level of neuromuscular block used. Two different doses of rocuronium (1.2 or 0.5 mg kg(-1)) were used after anaesthetic induction, and two respective targets of neuromuscular block (post-tetanic counts ≤2 or train-of-four count of 1 or 2) were used. Surgical conditions were assessed by the surgeon using a five-point rating scale (extremely poor/poor/acceptable/good/optimal), and clinically acceptable surgical conditions were defined as those which were rated acceptable, good, or optimal. The occurrence of vocal cord movement and postoperative adverse events was assessed.The surgical conditions were significantly different between the PTC1-2 and TOFcount1-2 groups (extremely poor/poor/acceptable/good/optimal: 0/2/1/7/26 and 3/10/2/14/7, respectively, P0.001). The incidence of clinically acceptable surgical conditions was significantly higher in the PTC1-2 group than in the TOFcount1-2 group (94 vs 64%, P=0.003). The percentage of patients who exhibited vocal cord movement was significantly lower in the PTC1-2 group than in the TOFcount1-2 group (3 vs 39%, P0.001). Abstract: Background Despite the clinical benefit of whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT), patients and physicians are concerned by the long-term impact on cognitive functioning. Many studies investigating the molecular and cellular impact of WBRT have used rodent models. However, there has not been a rodent protocol comparable to the recently reported Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) protocol for WBRT with hippocampal avoidance (HA) which is intended to spare cognitive function. The aim of this study was to develop a hippocampal-sparing WBRT protocol in Wistar rats. Methods The technical and clinical challenges encountered in hippocampal sparing during rat WBRT are substantial. Three key challenges were identified: hippocampal localization, treatment planning, and treatment localization. Hippocampal localization was achieved with sophisticated imaging techniques requiring deformable registration of a rat MRI atlas with a high resolution MRI followed by fusion via rigid registration to a CBCT. Treatment planning employed a Monte Carlo dose calculation in SmART-Plan and creation of 0.5cm thick lead blocks custom-shaped to match DRR projections. Treatment localization necessitated the on-board image-guidance capability of the XRAD C225Cx micro-CT/micro-irradiator (Precision X-Ray). Treatment was accomplished with opposed lateral fields with 225 KVp X-rays at a current of 13mA filtered through 0.3mm of copper using a 40x40mm square collimator and the lead blocks. A single fraction of 4Gy was delivered (2Gy per lateral field) with a 41 second beam on time per field at a dose rate of 304.5 cGy/min. Dosimetric verification of hippocampal sparing was performed using radiochromic film. In vivo verification of HA was performed after delivery of a single 4Gy fraction either with or without HA using γ-H2Ax staining of tissue sections from the brain to quantify the amount of DNA damage in rats treated with HA, WBRT, or sham-irradiated (negative controls). Results The mean dose delivered to radiochromic film beneath the hippocampal block was 0.52Gy compared to 3.93Gy without the block, indicating an 87% reduction in the dose delivered to the hippocampus. This difference was consistent with doses predicted by Monte Carlo dose calculation. The Dose Volume Histogram (DVH) generated via Monte Carlo simulation showed an underdose of the target volume (brain minus hippocampus) with 50% of the target volume receiving 100% of the prescription isodose as a result of the lateral blocking techniques sparing some midline thalamic and subcortical tissue. Staining of brain sections with anti-phospho-Histone H2A.X (reflecting double-strand DNA breaks) demonstrated that this treatment protocol limited radiation dose to the hippocampus in vivo. The mean signal intensity from γ-H2Ax staining in the cortex was not significantly different from the signal intensity in the cortex of rats treated with WBRT (5.40 v. 5.75, P = 0.32). In contrast, the signal intensity in the hippocampus of rats treated with HA was significantly lower than rats treated with WBRT (4.55 v. 6.93, P = 0.012). Conclusion Despite the challenges of planning conformal treatments for small volumes in rodents, our dosimetric and in vivo data show that WBRT with HA is feasible in rats. This study provides a useful platform for further application and refinement of the technique.

Abstract: Results of a study of the substructure of the highest transverse momentum (p(T)) jets observed by the CDF Collaboration are presented. Events containing at least one jet with p(T) > 400 GeV/c in a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.95 fb(-1), collected in 1.96 TeV proton-antiproton collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron collider, are selected. A study of the jet mass, angularity, and planar-flow distributions is presented, and the measurements are compared with predictions of perturbative quantum chromodynamics. A search for boosted top-quark production is also described, leading to a 95% confidence level upper limit of 38 fb on the production cross section of top quarks with p(T) > 400 GeV/c.

Abstract: Production of the Y(1S) meson in association with a vector boson is a rare process in the standard model with a cross section predicted to be below the sensitivity of the Tevatron. Observation of this process could signify contributions not described by the standard model or reveal limitations with the current nonrelativistic quantum-chromodynamic models used to calculate the cross section. We perform a search for this process using the full Run II data set collected by the CDF II detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb(-1). The search considers the Y -> mu mu decay and the decay of the W and Z bosons into muons and electrons. In these purely leptonic decay channels, we observe one YW candidate with an expected background of 1.2 +/- 0.5 events, and one YZ candidate with an expected background of 0.1 +/- 0.1 events. Both observations are consistent with the predicted background contributions. The resulting upper limits on the cross section for Y + W/Z production are the most sensitive reported from a single experiment and place restrictions on potential contributions from non-standard-model physics.
