The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated the critical need for accurate and rapid testing for virus detection. This need has generated a high number of new testing methods aimed at replacing RT-PCR, which is the golden standard for testing. Most of the testing techniques are based on biochemistry methods and require chemicals that are often expensive and the supply might become scarce in a large crisis. In the present paper we suggest the use of methods based on physics that leverage novel nanomaterials. We demonstrate that using Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) of virion particles a very distinct spectroscopic signature of the SARS-CoV-2 virus can be obtained. We demonstrate that the spectra are mainly composed by signals from the spike (S) and nucleocapsid (N) proteins. It is believed that a clinical test using SERS can be developed. The test will be fast, inexpensive, and reliable. It is also clear that SERS can be used for analysis of structural changes on the S and N proteins. Antimony selenide (Sb 2 Se 3 ) is a material widely used in photodetectors and relatively new as a possible material for thermoelectric applications. Taking advantage of the new properties after nanoscale fabrication, this material shows great potential for the development of efficient low temperature thermoelectric devices. Here we study the synthesis, the crystal properties and the thermal and thermoelectric transport response of Sb 2 Se 3 hexagonal nanotubes (HNT) in the temperature range between 120 and 370 K. HNT have a moderate electrical conductivity ∼10 2 S m -1 while maintaining a reasonable Seebeck coefficient ∼430 μV K -1 at 370 K. The electrical conductivity in Sb 2 Se 3 HNT is about 5 orders of magnitude larger and its thermal conductivity one half of what is found in bulk. Moreover, the calculated figure of merit (ZT) at room temperature is the largest value reported in antimony selenide 1D structures.

Candida auris is an emerging pathogenic fungus implicated in healthcare-associated outbreaks and causes bloodstream infections associated with high mortality rates. Biofilm formation represents one of the major pathogenetic traits associated with this microorganism. Unlike most other Candida species, C. auris has the ability to survive for weeks on different surfaces. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop new effective control strategies to combat the threat of C. auris . Advances in nanotechnologies have emerged that carry significant potential impact against Candida biofilms. We obtained pure round silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) (1 to 3 nm in diameter) using a microwave-assisted synthetic approach. When tested against C. auris , our results indicated a potent inhibitory activity both on biofilm formation (half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC 50 ) of 0.06 ppm) and against preformed biofilms (IC 50 of 0.48 ppm). Scanning electron microscopy images of AgNP-treated biofilms showed cell wall damage mostly by disruption and distortion of the outer surface of the fungal cell wall. In subsequent experiments AgNPs were used to functionalize medical and environmental surfaces. Silicone elastomers functionalized with AgNPs demonstrated biofilm inhibition (>50%) at relatively low concentrations (2.3 to 0.28 ppm). Bandage dressings loaded with AgNPs inhibited growth of C. auris biofilms by more than 80% (2.3 to 0.017 ppm). Also, to demonstrate long-lasting protection, dressings loaded with AgNPs (0.036 ppm) were washed thoroughly with phosphate-buffered saline, maintaining protection against the C. auris growth from cycles 1 to 3 (>80% inhibition) and from cycles 4 to 6 (>50% inhibition). Our results demonstrate the dose-dependent activity of AgNPs against biofilms formed by C. auris on both medical (silicone elastomer) and environmental (bandage fibers) surfaces. The AgNPs-functionalized fibers retain the fungicidal effect even after repeated thorough washes. Overall these results point to the utility of silver nanoparticles to prevent and control infections caused by this emerging pathogenic fungus.

Tin selenide (SnSe) has been the subject of great attention in the last years due to its highly efficient thermoelectricity and its possibilities as a green material, free of Pb and Te. Here, we report for the first time a thermoelectricity and transport study of individual SnSe micro- and nano-wires with diameters in the range between 130 nm and 1.15 μm. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analyses confirm an orthorhombic SnSe structure with Pnma (62) symmetry group and 1:1 Sn:Se atomic ratio. Electrical and thermal conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient were measured in each individual nanowire using a specialized suspended microdevice in the 150-370 K temperature range, yielding a thermal conductivity of 0.55 Wm -1  K -1 at room temperature and ZT ~ 0.156 at 370 K for the 130 nm diameter nanowire. The measured properties were correlated with electronic information obtained by model simulations and with phonon scattering analysis. The results confirm these structures as promising building blocks to develop efficient temperature sensors, refrigerators and thermoelectric energy converters. The thermoelectric response of the nanowires is compared with recent reports on crystalline, polycrystalline and layered bulk structures.

Electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts that have both high activities and long-term stabilities are needed for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and metal-air batteries. Two-dimensional (2D) materials based on graphene have shown high catalytic activities, however, carbon-based materials result in significant catalyst degradation due to carbon oxidation that occurs at high electrochemical potentials. Here, we introduce the synthesis and electrochemical performance of metallic 2D nanoframes which represent a new approach to translate 2D materials into unsupported (carbon-free) electrocatalysts that have both significantly higher ORR catalytic activities and stabilities compared with conventional Pt/carbon electrocatalysts. Metallic Ni-Pt 2D nanoframes were synthesized by controlled thermal treatments of Pt-decorated Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets. The nanoframes consist of a hierarchical 2D framework composed of a highly catalytically active Pt-Ni alloy phase with an interconnected solid and pore network that results in three-dimensional molecular accessibility. The inclusion of Ni within the Pt structure resulted in significantly smaller Pt lattice distances compared to those of Pt nanoparticles. On the basis of its unique local and extended structure, the ORR specific activity of Ni-Pt 2D nanoframes (5.8 mA cm Pt -2 ) was an order of magnitude higher than Pt/carbon. In addition, accelerated stability testing at elevated potentials up to 1.3 V RHE showed that the metallic Ni-Pt nanoframes exhibit significantly improved stability compared with Pt/carbon catalysts. The nanoarchitecture and local structure of metallic 2D nanoframes results in high combined specific activity and elevated potential stability. Analysis of the ORR electrochemical reaction kinetics on the Ni-Pt nanoframes supports that at low overpotentials the first electron transfer is the rate-determining step, and the reaction proceeds via a four electron reduction process. The ability to create metallic 2D structures with 3D molecular accessibility opens up new opportunities for the design of high activity and stability carbon-free catalyst nanoarchitectures for numerous electrocatalytic and catalytic applications.

Background: Candida albicans is the most common pathogenic fungus isolated in bloodstream infections in hospitalized patients, and candidiasis represents the fourth most common infection in United States hospitals, mostly due to the increasing numbers of immune- and medically-compromised patients. C. albicans has the ability to form biofilms and morphogenetic conversions between yeast and hyphal morphologies contribute to biofilm development and represent an essential virulence factor. Moreover, these attached communities of cells are surrounded by a protective exopolymeric matrix that effectively shelters Candida against the action of antifungals. Because of dismal outcomes, novel antifungal strategies, and in particular those targeting biofilms are urgently required. As fungi are eukaryotic, research and development of new antifungal agents has been difficult due to the limited number of selective targets, also leading to toxicity., Results: By microwave-assisted techniques we obtained pure 1 nm spherical silver nanoparticles ideal for their potential biological applications without adding contaminants. A phenotypic assay of C. albicans demonstrated a potent dose-dependent inhibitory effect of silver nanoparticles on biofilm formation, with an IC50 of 0.089 ppm. Also silver nanoparticles demonstrated efficacy when tested against pre-formed C. albicans biofilms resulting in an IC50 of 0.48 ppm. The cytotoxicity assay resulted in a CC50 of 7.03 ppm. The ultrastructural differences visualized under SEM with silver nanoparticles treatment were changes in the surface appearance of the yeast from smooth to rough thus indicating outer cell wall damage. On the fungal pre-formed biofilm true hyphae was mostly absent, as filamentation was inhibited. TEM measurement of the cell-wall width of C. albicans after treatment resulted in significant enlargement (206  ±  11 nm) demonstrating membrane permeabilization., Conclusions: Our results demonstrate that silver nanoparticles are potent inhibitors of C. albicans biofilm formation. SEM observations are consistent with an overall loss of structure of biofilms mostly due to disruption of the outer cell membrane/wall and inhibition of filamentation.TEM indicates the permeabilization of the cell wall and subsequent disruption of the structural layers of the outer fungal cell wall. The anti-biofilm effects are via cell wall disruption.

In this work the calibration of a medium resolution off-axis electron holography using a dual-lens imaging system in a JEOL ARM 200F is shown. The objective dual-lens configuration allows adjusting the field of view from 35nm to 2.5μm. Subsequently, the parameters used in phase shift reconstruction were calibrated considering biprism voltage versus fringe spacing (σ) and versus fringe width (W). The reliability of the transmission electron microscope performance using these parameters was achieved using gold nanoparticles of known size and adjusting the excitation voltage of the lenses., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. In this work we examined MoS₂ sheets by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) at three different energies: 80, 120 and 200 kV. Structural damage of the MoS₂ sheets has been controlled at 80 kV according a theoretical calculation based on the inelastic scattering of the electrons involved in the interaction electron-matter. The threshold energy for the MoS₂ material has been found and experimentally verified in the microscope. At energies higher than the energy threshold we show surface and edge defects produced by the electron beam irradiation. Quantitative analysis at atomic level in the images obtained at 80 kV has been performed using the experimental images and via STEM simulations using SICSTEM software to determine the exact number of MoS2₂ layers., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Ultrathin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) of Mo and W show great potential for digital electronics and optoelectronic applications. Whereas early studies were limited to mechanically exfoliated flakes, the large-area synthesis of 2D TMDCs has now been realized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) based on a sulfurization reaction. The optoelectronic properties of CVD grown monolayer MoS2 have been intensively investigated, but the influence of stoichiometry on the electrical and optical properties has been largely overlooked. Here we systematically vary the stoichiometry of monolayer MoS2 during CVD via controlled sulfurization and investigate the associated changes in photoluminescence and electrical properties. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is employed to measure relative variations in stoichiometry and the persistence of MoOx species. As MoS2-δ is reduced (increasing δ), the field-effect mobility of monolayer transistors increases while the photoluminescence yield becomes nonuniform. Devices fabricated from monolayers with the lowest sulfur content have negligible hysteresis and a threshold voltage of ∼ 0 V. We conclude that the electrical and optical properties of monolayer MoS2 crystals can be tuned via stoichiometry engineering to meet the requirements of various applications.

A series of In 2 O 3 thin films, ranging from X-ray diffraction amorphous to highly crystalline, were grown on amorphous silica substrates using pulsed laser deposition by varying the film growth temperature. The amorphous-to-crystalline transition and the structure of amorphous In 2 O 3 were investigated by grazing angle X-ray diffraction (GIXRD), Hall transport measurement, high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), electron diffraction, extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), and ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) liquid-quench simulation. On the basis of excellent agreement between the EXAFS and MD results, a model of the amorphous oxide structure as a network of InO x polyhedra was constructed. Mechanisms for the transport properties observed in the crystalline, amorphous-to-crystalline, and amorphous deposition regions are presented, highlighting a unique structure-property relationship.

The structural order in ultrathin films of monolayer protected clusters (MPCs) is important in a number of application areas but can be difficult to demonstrate by conventional methods, particularly when the metallic core dimension, d, is in the intermediate size-range, 1.5 < d < 5.0 nm. Here, improved techniques for the synthesis of monodisperse thiolate-protected gold nanoparticles have made possible the production of dodecane-thiolate saturated ∼4 ± 0.5 nm Au clusters with single-crystal core structure and morphology. An ultrathin ordered film or superlattice of these nanocrystal-core MPCs is prepared and investigated using aberration corrected scanning/transmission electron microscopy (STEM) which allowed imaging of long-range hexagonally ordered superlattices of the nanocrystals, separated by the thiolate groups. The lattice constants determined by direct imaging are in good agreement with those determined by small-angle electron diffraction. The STEM image revealed the characteristic grain boundary (GB) with sigma (Σ) 13 in the interface between two crystals. The formation and structures found are interpreted on the basis of theoretical calculations employing molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and coarse-grained (CG) approach.

Trimetallic nanoparticles possess different properties than their mono- and bi-metallic counterparts, opening a wide range of possibilities for diverse potential applications with the notion to study possible morphology, atomic ordering, reduce precious metal consumption and many others. In this paper, we present a comprehensive experimental study on AuCu-Pt trimetallic nanoparticles with an average diameter of 15 ± 1.0 nm, synthesized in a one-pot synthesis method and characterized by the Cs-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy technique that allowed us to probe the structure at the atomic level resolution. A new way to control the nanoparticle morphology by the presence of third metal (Pt) is also discussed by the overgrowth of Pt on the as prepared AuCu core by Frank-van der Merwe (FM) layer-by-layer and Stranski-Krastanov (SK) island-on-wetting-layer growth modes. With the application of this research, we are now a step closer to produce optimum catalysts in which the active phase forms only surface monolayers. In addition, the nanoalloy exhibits high index facet surfaces with {211} and {321} families that are highly open-structure surfaces and are interesting for the catalytic applications.

Nanorods of triniobium hydroxide heptaoxide, Nb3 O7 (OH), were synthesized by means of a hydrothermal method. Subsequently, Pt and CuO nanoparticles were introduced on the surface of Nb3 O7 (OH) nanorods by a microwave-assisted solvothermal nucleation and growth technique. The resulting Pt- and CuO-decorated Nb3 O7 (OH) nanorods demonstrated uniform particle dispersion and were fully characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and spectroscopic analysis. Furthermore, the solar-powered photocatalytic hydrogen production properties of these heteronanostructures were studied. The solar-driven H2 formation rate over Pt-Nb3 O7 (OH) was determined to be 710.4 ± 1.7 μmol g(-1) h(-1) with a quantum efficiency of ϕ=5.40% at λ=380 nm. Interestingly, the as-prepared CuO-Nb3 O7 (OH) heteronanostructure was found to be inactive under solar irradiation during an induction phase, whereupon it undergoes an in situ photoreduction process to form the photocatalytically active Cu-Nb3 O7 (OH). This restructuring process was monitored by an in situ measurement of the time-evolution of the optical absorption spectra. Atomic carbon chains have raised interest for their possible applications as graphene interconnectors as the thinnest nanowires; however, they are hard to synthesize and subsequently to study. We present here a reproducible method to synthesize carbon chains in situ TEM. Moreover, we present a direct observation of the bond length alternation in a pure carbon chain by aberration corrected TEM. Also, cross bonding between two carbon chains, 5 nm long, is observed experimentally and confirmed by DFT calculations. Finally, while free standing carbon chains were observed to be straight due to tensile loading, a carbon chain inside the walls of a carbon nanotube showed high flexibility.

Determination of the total structure of molecular nanocrystals is an outstanding experimental challenge that has been met, in only a few cases, by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Described here is an alternative approach that is of most general applicability and does not require the fabrication of a single crystal. The method is based on rapid, time-resolved nanobeam electron diffraction (NBD) combined with high-angle annular dark field scanning/transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) images in a probe corrected STEM microscope, operated at reduced voltages. The results are compared with theoretical simulations of images and diffraction patterns obtained from atomistic structural models derived through first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The method is demonstrated by application to determination of the structure of the Au 144 (SCH 2 CH 2 Ph) 60 cluster.

Lattice mismatch in a bimetallic core-shell nanoparticle will cause strain in the epitaxial shell layer, and if it reaches the critical layer thickness misfit dislocations will appear in order to release the increasing strain. These defects are relevant since they will directly impact the atomic and electronic structures thereby changing the physical and chemical properties of the nanoparticles. Here we report the direct observation and evolution through aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy of dislocations in AuPd core-shell nanoparticles. Our results show that first Shockley partial dislocations (SPD) combined with stacking faults (SF) appear at the last Pd layer; then, as the shell grows the SPDs and SFs appear at the interface and combine with misfit dislocations, which finally diffuse to the free surfaces due to the alloying of Au into the Pd shell. The critical layer thickness was found to be at least 50% greater than in thin films, confirming that shells growth on nanoparticles can sustain more strain due to the tridimensional nature of the nanoparticles.

The morphology of crystalline precipitates in a solid-state matrix is governed by complex but tractable energetic considerations driven largely by volume strain energy minimization and anisotropy of interfacial energies. Spherical precipitate morphologies are favored by isotropic systems, while anisotropic interfacial energies give energetic preference to certain crystallographically oriented interfaces, resulting in a faceted precipitate morphology. In conventional solid-solution precipitation, a precipitate's morphological evolution is mediated by surface anchoring of capping molecules, which dramatically alter the surface energy in an anisotropic manner, thereby providing exquisite morphology control during crystal growth. Herein, we present experimental evidence and theoretical validation for the role of a ternary element (Na) in controlling the morphology of nanoscale PbS crystals nucleating in a PbTe matrix, an important bulk thermoelectric system. The PbS nanostructures formed by phase separation from a PbI(2)-doped or undoped PbTe matrix have irregular morphologies. However, replacing the iodine dopant with Na (1-2 mol %) alters dramatically the morphology of the PbS precipitates. Segregation of Na at PbTe/PbS interfaces result in cuboidal and truncated cuboidal morphologies for PbS. Using analytical scanning/transmission electron microscopy and atom-probe tomography, we demonstrate unambiguously that Na partitions to the precipitates and segregates at the matrix/precipitate interfaces, inducing morphological anisotropy of PbS precipitates. First-principles and semiclassical calculations reveal that Na as a solute in PbTe has a higher energy than in PbS and that Na segregation at a (100) PbTe/PbS interface decreases the total energy of matrix/precipitate system, resulting in faceting of PbS precipitates. These results provide an impetus for a new strategy for controlling morphological evolution in matrix/precipitate systems, mediated by solute partitioning of ternary additions.

Bimetallic nanoparticles present different properties than their monometallic counterparts, opening a wide range of possibilities for different applications. PtPd nanoparticles have raised interest for their many applications in fuel cells, ethanol and methanol oxidation reactions, hydrogen storage, etc. However, the cost of Pt makes it unpractical to use in big quantities; therefore, one of the big challenges is to synthesize very small catalysts in order to maximize the efficiency in their use. In this work, we synthesized polyhedral PtPd core-shell nanoparticles under 20 nm and characterized them by Cs-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. This technique allowed us to probe the structure at the atomic level of these nanoparticles revealing new structural information. We determined the structure of the three main polyhedral morphologies obtained in the synthesis: octahedral, decahedral and triangular plates. Decahedral PtPd core-shell nanoparticles are novel morphologies for this system. Morphology and defects present in the nanoparticles are shown and discussed.

We use ONIOM (QM/MM) methodology to carry out geometry calculations in a 4-atom nanocluster supported by an (8, 8) armchair carbon nanotube with and without defects employing LSDA/SDD for the QM system and UFF for MM. In two particular cases, defects were added in the carbon nanotube wall. These defects are a double oxygenated vacancy (Vac₂O₂) and a double vacancy but without oxygen which creates two pentagons and an octagon. Our results show how geometries using QM/MM and energies calculations carried out with QM, change on both the gold nanocluster and the carbon nanotube. In addition, an application of ONIOM methodology in a comparative study to predict behavior of structures as hybrid materials based in carbon nanotubes combined with gold nanoclusters is shown. In this work we examine geometry changes on both the gold nanocluster and the carbon nanotube. A comparison is made with the binding energy resulting values as well as with the orbital energies such as the frontier orbitals HOMO and LUMO.

The optical response of multibranched gold nanoparticles is studied by means of electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in aberration corrected STEM mode. In every case the plasmon response is constant and variations in the maxima positions were found to be dependent on the branches aspect ratio. The good spatial resolution combined with the high energy resolution (0.18 eV) of the monochromated electron beam allows mapping the different plasmonic modes along the entire nanoparticles ranging from 0.7 eV up to 2.25 eV.

Graphene oxide nanoribbons (GONRs) are wide bandgap semiconductors that can be reduced to metallic graphene nanoribbons. The transformation of GONRs from their semiconductive to the metallic state by annealing has attracted significant interest due to its simplicity. However, the detailed process by which GONRs transform from wide-bandgap semiconductors to semimetals with a near zero bandgap is unclear. As a result, precise control of the bandgap between these two states is not currently achievable. Here, we quantitatively examine the removal of oxygen-containing groups and changes in the bandgap during thermal annealing of GONRs. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements show the progressive removal of oxygen-containing functional groups. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals that initially small graphene regions in GONRs become large stacked graphitic layers during thermal annealing. These structural and chemical changes are correlated with progressive changes in the electrochemical bandgap, monitored by cyclic voltammetry. These results show that small changes in the thermal annealing temperature result in significant changes to the bandgap and chemical composition of GONRs and provide a straightforward method for tuning the bandgap in oxidized graphene structures.

The stability of decahedral shaped nanoparticles depends upon size. Ino and Marks introduced new mechanisms for the stabilization of decahedra nanoparticles which involves the faceting and the formation of surfaces different of {111}. These mechanisms have relevance for small size nanoparticles; however, they do not explain, thoroughly, how decahedral particles can grow up to 300 nm or more. Here, we report new mechanisms that help stabilize very large decahedral. With the use of aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, we observed the formation of high index facets, determined to be of the {511} family, on all five sides of the particles. Surface dislocations strings are also observed. In addition, surface reconstruction of the {001} surfaces can also be observed in two different orientation: with hexagonal strings along the [110] and along the [410] directions.

Long multi-branched gold nanoparticles have been synthesized in a very high yield through a facile synthesis combining two different capping agents. The stability of these materials with the time has been tested and their characterization have been performed by diverse advanced electron microscopy techniques, paying special attention to aberration corrected transmission electron microscopy in order to unambiguously analyze the surface structure of the branches and provide insights for the formation of stellated gold nanoparticles.

Bimetallic nanoparticles of Au-Pd find important applications in catalysis. Their catalytic performance is directly related to the structure, alloy formation and variation of composition in the structure. A standard idea is that bimetallic nanoparticles can be either an alloy or a core shell structure. Our group has investigated the structure and composition of Pd-Au nanoparticles by using aberration corrected high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). We reported previously that the nanoparticles are composed of an evenly alloyed inner core, an Au-rich intermediate layer, and a Pd-rich outer shell. The structure is more complicated than what simple models can predict. In this paper we report additional studies of this system wherein by carrying out spectral and chemical analysis (STEM*-EDAX, STEM-EELS) the interface structure can now be better identified and understood. Apart from the three-layered core-shell structures we have also been able to observe in some cases a four-layered core-shell structure as well. The entire core-shell structure is not rigid and there is indeed intercalation of Au-Pd into the other layers as well. In addition we have been able to locate stacking faults present in the nanoparticles. We also address the problem of the interface structure between the layers. By using nanodiffraction we have found that the whole structure of the nanoparticles becomes hcp in contrast to the bulk structure of Au or Pd.

In this work we present the analysis by aberration corrected electron microscopy of the formation of gold clusters based on the proton irradiation of larger nanoparticles (NP). Pentagonal arrays have been observed and energetic calculations have been performed in order to prove the stability of these materials.
