This work reports on the analysis of structural and spectroscopic properties of the fluoroindate glasses co-doped with Er3+/Ho3+. Structural analysis showed that erbium and holmium ions were modifier ions and depolymerizedof the fluoroindate glass network. The energy transfer processes between rare - earth ions in fluoroindate glasses pumped by and 980 nm laser diode have been also examined. Due to partial Er3+ → Ho3+ energy transfer and superposition of Er3+: 4I11/2 → 4I13/2 (2.77 μm)+ Ho3+: 5I6 → 5I7 (2.85 μm) radiative transitions in fluoroindate glass co-doped with 0.8ErF3/1.6HoF3, a broadening 3 μm luminescence (Δλ= 201 nm) was obtained. The overall energy transfer efficiency ηET1 + ηET2 was calculated to be 95% indicating efficient sensitization of the holmium ions by erbium.

The majority of patients undergoing bilateral prophylactic mastectomy request immediate implant-based breast reconstruction. Some patients, especially those with prior radiotherapy, are at increased risk of early cutaneous complications and implant loss. The authors developed the technique of primary fat grafting before delayed prophylactic mastectomy to minimize early complications for selective high-risk patients. They have completed 21 cases in 14 patients, 10 of whom had previous lumpectomy and radiation treatment for breast cancer. A single session of fat grafting, with a median injection volume of 250 ml (interquartile range, 200 to 300 ml), was performed a median period of 19 weeks (interquartile range, 16 to 28 weeks) before prophylactic mastectomy. All cases were direct-to-implant reconstruction using textured silicone implants. The median implant volume was 410 ml (interquartile range, 318 to 450 ml). A minor early complication developed in 14 percent of cases (three of 21), with no early implant loss. At a median follow-up of 9 months (interquartile range, 5 to 27 months), the authors found no cases of implant loss and an excellent or good aesthetic outcome (score of 5 or 4) in 16 of 21 cases (76 percent). Fat grafting before prophylactic mastectomy is a novel strategy to minimize early complications and avoid implant loss in patients at high risk of postoperative complications. .Therapeutic, IV.

An investigation of the structural and luminescent properties of the transparent germanate glass-ceramics co-doped with Ni2+/Er3+ for near-infrared optical fiber applications was presented. Modification of germanate glasses with 10–20 ZnO (mol.%) was focused to propose the additional heat treatment process controlled at 650 °C to obtain transparent glass-ceramics. The formation of 11 nm ZnGa2O4 nanocrystals was confirmed by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method. It followed the glass network changes analyzed in detail (MIR—Mid Infrared spectroscopy) with an increasing heating time of precursor glass. The broadband 1000–1650 nm luminescence (λexc = 808 nm) was obtained as a result of Ni2+: 3T2(3F) → 3A2(3F) octahedral Ni2+ ions and Er3+: 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 radiative transitions and energy transfer from Ni2+ to Er3+ with the efficiency of 19%. Elaborated glass–nanocrystalline material is a very promising candidate for use as a core of broadband luminescence optical fibers.

In this work structural and luminescence properties of gallo-germanate glasses were investigated. The mentioned glass system was modified with barium and antimony oxides and doped with Eu3+ ions. The starting glass consisted of barium oxide as a modifier which was then gradually replaced by antimony oxide to form six glass samples. The gallo-germanate glass as a low-phonon host for RE (Rare Earths) ions is a promising material for optoelectronics. However, luminescence properties closely depend on material composition. For this reason, structural changes in studied materials were induced by changing its chemical composition and the luminescence properties were tested. The FT-IR (Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) and the Raman spectra of studied glasses illustrate the tendency to increasing quantity of bridging oxygen connecting germanium ions and decreasing quantity of non-bridging oxygen along with antimony oxide addition. Simultaneously the BP (Boson Peak) measurements and emission spectra of Eu3+ ions show an increasing tendency to the examined glass structure ordering along with modifier oxide addition.

This work reports on the fabrication and analysis of near-infrared and mid-infrared luminescence spectra and their decays in fluoroindate glasses co-doped with Yb3+/Ho3+. The attention has been paid to the analysis of the Yb3+→ Ho3+ energy transfer processed ions in fluoroindate glasses pumped by 976 nm laser diode. The most effective sensitization for 2 μm luminescence has been obtained in glass co-doped with 0.8YbF3/1.6HoF3. Further study in the mid-infrared spectral range (2.85 μm) showed that the maximum emission intensity has been obtained in fluoroindate glass co-doped with 0.1YbF3/1.4HoF3. The obtained efficiency of Yb3+→ Ho3+ energy transfer was calculated to be up to 61% (0.8YbF3/1.6HoF3), which confirms the possibility of obtaining an efficient glass or glass fiber infrared source for a MID-infrared (MID-IR) sensing application.

Introduction Breast cancer in women with cosmetic breast implants is increasingly common. Over the past decade, there has been a push for mastectomy and reconstruction in these patients, based on a fear of poor aesthetic results from small breast volume, and radiation-induced capsular contracture. At the Paris Breast Centre, augmented women routinely undergo lumpectomy with whole-breast irradiation (BCT). Materials and methods A consecutive cohort of 50 augmented women, who had attempted BCT for early breast cancer at our institution between 2003 and 2018, were retrospectively identified. Post-treatment complications, oncologic outcomes, capsular contracture rates, long-term cosmetic outcomes, and patient-reported outcomes were evaluated. Results The median follow-up was 51 months. Margins were involved in 7 women (14%); 4 of whom underwent successful re-excision, and 3 had a mastectomy, for an early mastectomy rate of 6%. There were no early complications, nor cases of early implant loss. Long-term aesthetic results were evaluated using our 5-point scale: An excellent (5), or good (4) result was obtained in 68%. Significant capsular contracture (Baker grade 3 or 4) developed in 34%, of which, 5 women underwent capsulotomy and fat grafting; 4 of 5 downstaging their Baker grade. The estimated 5-year local recurrence rate was 2.3%. Ninety-five percent of participants would recommend BCT to augmented women. Conclusion BCT is feasible and safe in augmented women with good long-term aesthetic results, and should be considered to avoid unnecessary mastectomy.
