1. Biogeography and ecology of geographically distant populations of sibling Cryptocephalus leaf beetles

Abstract

Different populations of two closely related species, Cryptocephalusflavipes and C. bameuli, from western (Alps, Apennines and Pyrenees) and central Europe (Poland, Ukraine and Pannonia) were analysed. On the basis of DNA sequences from two genes, cox1 and ef1-α, distinctiveness of both species was confirmed. Nevertheless, possible hybrids were identified in Carpathian mountains. We found a significant genetic differentiation among populations of C. flavipes and C. bameuli from distant regions but a high genetic similarity between populations of C. bameuli from north and south of the Carpathians. Demographic estimates suggest a past population expansion in the case of C. bameuli and a recent one for C. flavipes, possibly occurred during Pleistocene and Holocene, respectively. Distribution modelling showed that C. flavipes is typically present in the mountain systems, whereas C. bameuli is associated with hilly areas of central and eastern Europe. Based on the present data, Last Glacial Maximum refugia of both species were located in the Alpine region and Black Sea coasts, but on different elevations. The characterization of the insect diet, through a DNA metabarcoding approach targeting the trnL plant intron, demonstrated a significant differentiation of food preferences between the two species, as well as between geographic populations within the species.

Abstract

Four new species belonging to the genus Chaetocladius, known to occur in Italy, are here described as adult males: C. aedeagovirgatus sp. nov., C. subalpinus sp. nov., C. ticinoi sp. nov., and C. valdostanus sp. nov. C. aedeagolobatus is characterized by a robust aedeagal lobe, C. subalpinus and C. valdostanus by a characteristic inferior volsella, C. ticinoi by a tubercle on the basis of gonostylus. Geographical distribution of the other species known to occur in Italy is given. A key to adult males is presented.

Abstract

Thirty-four adult ticks collected from livestock on Socotra Island (Yemen) were identified as Hyalomma marginatum using traditional morphological characteristics. Morphological identification was confirmed for all the collected specimens using a molecular approach targeting a fragment of the mitochondrial gene 12S rRNA. All the specimens were examined for the presence of tick-borne pathogens and the tick endosymbiont Candidatus Midichloria mitochondrii using polymerase chain reaction. Three specimens out of the 34 analyzed tested positive to the presence of Francisella spp. leading to the first detection of these bacteria in H. marginatum on Socotra Island. The phylogenetic analyses conducted on a 660 bp fragment of the ribosomal gene 16S rRNA of Francisella spp. (including F. philomiragia as outgroup, the four subspecies of F. tularensis and the Francisella-like endosymbiont of ticks) confirm that the newly detected Francisella strains cluster into the Francisella-like endosymbionts of ticks. Interestingly, the detected Francisella-like endosymbiont, shows a different genotype to that previously isolated from H. marginatum collected in Bulgaria. No specimen was positive for the presence of Rickettsia spp., Coxiella burnetii, Borrelia burgdorferi or M. mitochondrii.

Abstract

The acetic acid bacterium Asaia spp. was successfully detected in Anopheles arabiensis Patton, 1905, one of the major vector of human malaria in Sub-Saharan Africa. A collection of 45 Asaia isolates in cellfree media was established from 20 individuals collected from the field in Burkina Faso. 16S rRNA universal polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and specific qPCR, for the detection of Asaia spp. were performed in order to reveal the presence of different bacterial taxa associated with this insect. The isolates were typed by internal transcribed spacer-PCR, BOX-PCR, and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA-PCR, proved the presence of different Asaia in A. arabiensis.

Abstract

An improved weather-forecast-based link-budget design technique for space-to-Earth links is described. The aim is the stochastic optimization of both transmission symbol rate and received signal-to-noise ratio. The proposed radiometeorological operations prediction (RadioMetOP) model takes into account the forecast uncertainty by a space–time ensemble method exploiting the temporal evolution of the predicted radiometeorological variables over the weather-forecast spatial grid. The unique possibility of testing and validating the RadioMetOP model is presented, thanks to the $Ka$ -band downlink measurements available from the support of the European Space Agency’s antenna tracking network to deep-space Hayabusa-2 (HB2) mission, operated by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. First, the RadioMetOP model accuracy is tested by comparing the signal-to-noise ratio, measured during the transmission periods, with the simulated one, properly scaled to the symbol rate operated by HB2, finding correlation values of 0.9 that confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Second, the $a$ posteriori analysis of the optimization process is accomplished, showing that depending on the considered criteria for the link-budget optimization, the use of the RadioMetOP model would have allowed a transmitted data volume more than doubled and an average signal-to-noise ratio gain between 2.1 and 3.8 dB.

Abstract

This work describes the operative experimentation of a weather-forecast based satellite link-budget approach at Ka-band (named RMOP) during 6 months of collaboration with JAXA and ESA within Hayabusa-2 deep-space mission. Operative link-budget design was performed 24 hours before each scheduled transmission window providing JAXA and ESA with optimized symbol-rates (to adopt during the transmission) and the corresponding expected signal-to-noise ratio values allowing a real-time monitoring of the predicted atmospheric channel status. The comparison between simulations and measurements proves the accuracy of the RMOP tool with correlation values higher than 0.9, bias lower than 0.8 dB and error standard deviation lower than 0.7 dB. The optimization analysis confirms the strong potential of the RMOP approach providing gain values higher than 5 dB in terms of signal-to-noise ratio and higher than 100% in terms of transmitted data-volume. These results pave the way to an operative scheduling of a weather-forecast based link-budget approach for future satellite missions.

Abstract

This work provides a weather-forecast-based technique (named RadioMetOP) for the stochastic optimization of Ka-band satellite links. The stochastic approach is given by a space-time ensemble obtained exploiting the temporal and spatial evolution of the weather-forecast model. This approach minimizes the doublepenalty error typically connected to weather-forecast models and allows to take into account the forecast uncertainty directly related to the multiplicity of possible meteorological scenarios. For the first time, the RadioMetOP technique can be verified thanks to the availability of Ka-band data from the Hayabusa-2 deep-space mission directed by the Japan aerospace exploration agency and supported by the European space agency. The comparison with measurements has proofed the strong advantage of the RadioMetOP model (with a signal-to-noise ratio gain even higher than 8 dB) and its accuracy (with validation results showing mean values of correlation, bias and error standard deviation of 0.88, 0.17 dB and 0.65 dB, respectively).

Abstract

In Southern Italy, since 2013, there has been an ongoing Olive Quick Decline Syndrome (OQDS) outbreak, due to the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, which has caused a dramatic impact from both socio-economic and environmental points of view. Current agronomic practices are mainly based on uprooting the sick olive trees and their surrounding ones, with later installment of olive cultivars more resistant to the bacterium infection. Unfortunately, both of these practices are having an undesirable impact on the environment and on the economy. Here, a spatially structured mathematical model has been proposed to include a predator Zelus renardii as a possible biocontrol agent of the Xylella epidemic. The fact that Z. renardii has been reported to be a generalist predator implies that its introduction is not an efficient control strategy to eradicate a Xylella epidemic. Instead, a specialist predator, whenever identified, would lead to the eventual eradication of a Xylella epidemic. In either cases it has been confirmed that a significant reduction of the weed biomass can lead to the eradication of the vector population, hence of a Xylella epidemic, independently of the presence of predators.

Abstract

BACKGROUND Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most malignant primary brain cancer. Several mutations and alterations of key cellular pathways including tyrosine kinases (TKs) are involved in GBM etiopathogenesis. Currently there is no cure for GBM. Tumour heterogeneity and the presence of the blood brain barrier (BBB), with efflux transporters, are some of the causes of failure of novel therapeutic agents. Thus, appropriate target selectivity and pharmacokinetics (including brain penetration) are critical issues for the generation of potential drug candidates. The main in-vitro and in-vivo properties and antitumour activity of CR13626, a novel brain penetrant TK inhibitor, are presented. MATERIAL AND METHODS CR13626 inhibitory activity against a panel of 173 kinases was assessed. The effect on cellular proliferation was verified in different 2D human glioblastoma cell lines (U87MG, U373, U87MG vIII) and in a U87MG 3D spheroid model by ViaCount assays. The in-vivo antitumour activity was determined in a mouse model of glioblastoma based on the orthotopic injection of U87MG-Luciferase GBM cells in nude mice: oral treatment started on day 9 post-implantation and continued for 10 days (50 mg/kg/daily). Tumour progression was evaluated through the measurement of bioluminescence (BLI) at the end of dosing (day 19) and during follow-up (day 26–33). Survival was also monitored. The pharmacokinetics and brain exposure of CR13626 were assessed by LC/MS/MS in plasma and brain homogenate tissues of CD1 and tumour-bearing nude mice. RESULTS CR13626 potently inhibited FYN, YES, KDR and EGFR kinases, relevant for GBM development, with IC50 values of 69 nM, 3.6 nM, 82 nM and 6 nM, respectively. The compound reduced the proliferation of different human glioblastoma cell lines (GI50 1–3 µM). In CD1 mice, CR13626 had a good oral bioavailability (72%) and brain penetration (brain/plasma ratio of 1.4). In-vivo BLI analysis indicated a time-dependent reduction of tumour growth, reaching 60% on the last BLI evaluation 33 days post-implantation (i.e. 15 days after the end of dosing). Tumour growth inhibition translated into an increase of 25% of the median survival time of animals treated with CR13626 compared to the vehicle group (p CONCLUSION The combined abilities of CR13626 to inhibit the activity of TKs involved in GBM development, to cross the BBB, and to reduce tumour growth in-vivo leading to increased survival, warrant its further development as a drug candidate in GBM.

Abstract

Pyrethroid insecticides were intensively used against Cydia pomonella in the Río Negro and Neuquén valley, main production area of pome fruits in Argentina. Therefore, the first objective was to evaluate lambda-cyhalothrin resistance levels in C. pomonella larvae from orchards in this area that are currently under pyrethroids treatments. The second objective was to evaluate the frequency of kdr mutation in C. pomonella across Argentina. High levels of resistance to lambda-cyhalothrin (resistance ratios30) were determined in all the populations evaluated. The L1014F (kdr) mutation was evaluated in 355 diapausing larvae collected in 12 orchards from San Juan to Santa Cruz provinces (1690 km away from each other). The highest frequency of kdr mutation was determined in larvae from the Río Negro and Neuquén valley (0.61), followed by those from Mendoza (0.36). The kdr allele was absent or present at very low frequencies in orchards subjected to low pyrethroid pressure. The frequency of detection of kdr mutation in C. pomonella from Argentina is related to the use of pyrethroids against this pest in different areas. Target-site insensitivity is, at least, one of the mechanisms involved in resistance to lambda-cyhalothrin in codling moth from the Río Negro and Neuquén valley.

Abstract

In this work we propose a model chain for the prediction of the tropospheric channel for the downlink of interplanetary missions operating above Ku band We show the validation and online operation of the model-chain, already tested within a feasibility study applied to the BepiColombo mission to Mercury (operated by the European Space Agency), through Hayabusa2 mission cross-support data provided by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The model-chain is composed by three modules. A weather forecast module for the prediction of the atmospheric state expected during the downlink transmission. A radiopropagation module to simulate radiopropagation variables generated by the predicted atmospheric state. A downlink budget module for the statistical optimization of the satellite-to-Earth link. The latter is realized exploiting the spatial grid domain and the temporal evolution of the predicted radiopropgation variables to compute statistics and uncertainties of the outputs operational parameters to use during the transmission. We have successfully validated the model-chain through the comparison of the simulated signal-to-noise ratio with the one received from Hayabusa2 with an average error of 0.16 dB. For the online operation we have provided JAXA with our predicted operational parameters to use during the transmission which revealed to be reliable and correct.

Abstract

Purpose To evaluate in current practice the performance of BOADICEA and BRCAPRO risk models and empirical criteria based on cancer family history for the selection of individuals for BRCA genetic testing. Patients and methods The probability of BRCA mutation according to the three tools was retrospectively estimated in 918 index cases consecutively undergone BRCA testing at 15 Italian cancer genetics clinics between 2006 and 2008. Results 179 of 918 cases (19.5%) carried BRCA mutations. With the strict use of the criteria based on cancer family history 173 BRCA (21.9%) mutations would have been detected in 789 individuals. At the commonly used 10% threshold of BRCA mutation carrier probability, the genetic models showed a similar performance [PPV (38% and 37%), sensitivity (76% and 77%) and specificity (70% and 69%)]. Their strict use would have avoided around 60% of the tests but would have missed approximately 1 every 4 carriers. Conclusion Our data highlight the complexity of BRCA testing referral in routine practice and question the strict use of genetic models for BRCA risk assessment.

BACKGROUND: Currently there is no cure for glioblastoma (GBM), the most malignant primary brain cancer. Glioblastoma etiopathogenesis involves mutations and alterations of key signaling pathways including tyrosine kinases (TKs). Notably, aberrant activation of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) such as EGFR (amplified in 40% of glioblastoma cases) and KDR represents one of the driving forces for cellular proliferation and angiogenesis. The ability to cross the blood brain barrier (BBB) and appropriate pharmacodynamics (target selectivity) and pharmacokinetics (brain penetration) are critical issues for the generation of potential drug candidates against glioblastoma. CR13626 is a novel brain penetrant small molecule able to inhibit different TKs relevant to the development of this cancer. The present study describes the in vitro and in vivo properties of CR13626 and its antitumor activity in a mouse model of glioblastoma. METHODS: We identified the TKs targeted by CR13626 against a panel of 173 kinase enzymes. The effects of CR13626 on cellular proliferation were assessed in different 2D human GBM cell lines (U87MG, U373, U87MG vIII) by ViaCount, and in U87MG 3D spheroids by CellTiter-Glo 3D viability assay. The antitumor activity in vivo was determined in an orthotopic mouse model of GBM based on the injection of U87MG-Luciferase cells in nude mice. Animals were orally treated with CR13626 (50 mg/kg/daily) for 10 days, starting on day 9 post-implantation. Measurement of bioluminescence (BLI) at day 19 (end of dosing) and during follow-up (days 26-33) allowed the monitoring of tumor progression. CR13626 pharmacokinetics and brain exposure were assessed by LC/MS/MS in plasma and brain homogenate tissues of CD1 and tumor-bearing nude mice. RESULTS: CR13626 potently inhibited tyrosine kinases relevant to GBM development, with IC50 values in the nanomolar range: FYN (69 nM), YES (3.6 nM), KDR (82 nM) and EGFR (6 nM). CR13626 reduced the growth of different human glioblastoma cell lines with GI50 values in the range 1-3 µM. In vivo, CR13626 treatment led to a time-dependent reduction of tumor growth, reaching 60% on the last BLI evaluation 33 days post-implantation (i.e. 15 days after the end of dosing). A 25% significant increase in the median survival of animals compared to the vehicle group was also observed. The antitumor effects of CR13626 were in line with the exposure of tumor-bearing mice to the compound. Pharmacokinetic studies in CD1 mice showed good oral bioavailability (72%) and brain penetration (brain/plasma ratio of 1.4) for CR13626. CONCLUSION: The ability of CR13626 to cross the BBB without being a substrate of efflux transporters that mediate tumor resistance, to simultaneously inhibit the activity of different TKs involved in GBM development, and to reduce tumor growth eventually leading to an increased survival of animals, warrant its further development as a drug candidate in glioblastoma. Abstract

The structure of the CMS inner tracking system has been studied using nuclear interactions of hadrons striking its material. Data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded in 2015 at the LHC are used to reconstruct millions of secondary vertices from these nuclear interactions. Precise positions of the beam pipe and the inner tracking system elements, such as the pixel detector support tube, and barrel pixel detector inner shield and support rails, are determined using these vertices. These measurements are important for detector simulations, detector upgrades, and to identify any changes in the positions of inactive elements. © 2018 CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.

Abstract

This work aims at verifying an innovative approach for link-design optimization of deep-space missions working at Ka band. The presented approach exploits a weather forecast (WF) model coupled with a radiopropagation model to maximize data-transfer during a Ka-band downlink transmission. First, we exploit radiosounding data to tune the WF model on the geographical site of interest. As second step, we use microwave radiometric measurements to verify both WF and radiopropagation models. A final goal is obtained applying the WF-based approach to optimize the link and then computing the yearly data return on the basis of the actual atmospheric scenario measured by the microwave radiometer. On a test period of three years of transmission, WF-based approach provides a gain, in terms of yearly received data-volume, of about 15% up to 24% if compared to traditional link-design techniques. This gain is combined with a corresponding reduction of yearly lost data. These interesting results make the WF-based approach an appealing alternative for deep-space applications.

Abstract

The Rio Negro and Neuquen Valley is the most important apple and pear growing region in Argentina. Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), the main fruit-tree pest is being controlled by azinphosmethyl (AzMe), acetamiprid (Acet), and thiacloprid (Thia) among other insecticides. The objective of this study was to evaluate the response of neonate larvae of codling moth to these three insecticides and on the role of cytochrome P450 monooxygenase in their toxicity. All field populations presented significantly lower mortality to a discriminating concentration (DC) of Acet and AzMe. In addition, 13 of the 14 populations showed significantly lower mortality to DC of Thia. Most of the field populations (71%) showed significantly higher 7-ethoxycoumarine O-deethylase activity compared with the laboratory-susceptible strain. While positive significant correlation (r = 0.59) was found between Thia and AzMe mortalities at the DC level, no significant correlations were detected between Acet and Thia (...

Abstract

The potential influence of insects' feeding behaviour on their associated bacterial communities is currently a matter of debate. Using the major pest of commodities, Plodia interpunctella, as a model and adopting a culture-independent approach, the impact of different diets on the host-associated microbiota was evaluated. An analysis of similarity showed differences among the microbiotas of moths fed with five substrates and provided evidence that diet represents the only tested factor that explains this dissimilarity. Bacteria shared between food and insects provide evidence for a limited conveyance to the host of the bacteria derived from the diet; more likely, the content of carbohydrates and proteins in the diets promotes changes in the insect's microbiota. Moth microbiotas were characterized by two robust entomotypes, respectively, associated with a carbohydrate-rich diet and a protein-rich diet. These results were also confirmed by the predicted metagenome functional potential. A core microbiota, composed of six taxa, was shared between eggs and adults, regardless of the origin of the population. Finally, the identification of possible human and animal pathogens on chili and associated with the moths that feed on it highlights the possibility that these bacteria may be conveyed by moth frass.

Abstract

The Cryptocephalus marginellus (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) complex is composed by six species that are supposed to have originated by events of allo- or parapatric speciation. In the present study we investigated the alternative hypotheses that the bacterial communities associated with six populations of this species complex are shaped by environmental factors, or reflect the proposed pattern of speciation. The microbiota associated with the six populations, from five species of the complex, have been characterized through 16S rRNA pyrotag sequencing. Based on a 97% sequence similarity threshold, data were clustered into 381 OTUs, which were analyzed using a variety of diversity indices. The microbiota of C. acquitanus and C. marginellus (Calanques) were the most diverse (over 100 OTUs), while that from C. zoiai yielded less bacterial diversity (45 OTUs). Taxonomic assignment revealed Proteobacteria, Tenericutes and Firmicutes as the dominant components of these beetles’ microbiota. The most abundant genera were Ralstonia, Sphingomonas, Rickettsia, and Pseudomonas. Different strains of Rickettsia were detected in C. eridani and C. renatae. The analysis of β-diversity revealed high OTU turnover among the populations of C. marginellus complex, with only few shared species. Hierarchical clustering taking into account relative abundances of OTUs does not match the phylogeny of the beetles, therefore we hypothesize that factors other than phylogenetic constraints play a role in shaping the insects’ microbiota. Environmental factors that could potentially affect the composition of bacterial communities were tested by fitting them on the results of a multi-dimensional scaling analysis. No significant correlations were observed towards the geographic distances or the host plants, while the composition of the microbiota appeared associated with altitude. Abstract

The study of the effects of the density variations on the vibrational dynamics in vitreous silica is presented. A detailed analysis of the dynamical structure factor, as well as of the current spectra, allows the identification of a flattened transverse branch which is highly sensitive to the density variations. The experimental variations on the intensity and position of the Boson Peak (BP) in v-SiO2 as a function of density are reproduced and interpreted as being due to the shift and disappearance of the latter band. The BP itself is found to correspond to the lower energy tail of the excess states due to the piling up of vibrational modes at energies corresponding to the flattening of the transverse branch., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

This paper reports on the optical properties of Erbium-doped zinc–tellurite (TeO2–ZnCl2–ZnO) oxyhalide glass waveguides, deposited by reactive pulsed laser deposition (RPLD) on silica substrates. Er3+-doped zinc–tellurite glass (ZT) targets were ablated in oxygen dynamical flow at two different pressure values of 5 and 10 Pa by ArF excimer laser at the fluence of 3.7 J/cm 2 . The waveguiding properties of the deposited films were investigated by the m-line technique. The TE0 mode excitation was used for photoluminescence (PL) and Raman measurements, in order to study the Erbium ion 4I13/2 ® 4I15/2 transition and structural properties of the deposited films, respectively. Abstract

Mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 show different expressivity with respect to cancer risk, and allelic heterogeneity may be present in both genes. We collected 179 pedigrees with identified germline mutation (104 BRCA1 and 75 BRCA2), ascertained in six collaborating centers of the Italian Consortium for Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer. Significant heterogeneity was detected for several variables, and a logistic regression model including age of diagnosis in the proband, presence of ovarian cancer in the family, presence of prostate or pancreatic cancer in the family, and presence of male breast cancer in the family proved to be effective in predicting the presence of a mutation in a gene rather than the other. Excess of familial aggregation of both breast and ovarian cancer was observed in both genes. Proportion of ovarian cancer was increased in the 5' portion of BRCA1, and presence of prostate or pancreatic cancer in a family was correlated with presence of ovarian cancer in BRCA2.

Abstract

Deep space exploration is aimed at acquiring information about the solar system and a significant communication capacity has to be planned for such very large distances. The concept of the RadioMeteorological Operations Planner technique (RadioMetOP) is described together with its main modelling components and objectives. Numerical results, in terms of received frame data using a statistical estimation methodology, is also illustrated using the BepiColombo mission as a baseline example. Preliminary results, using raingauge data and radiometeorological forecast simulations, are discussed taking the fully-adaptive bit-rate test case as a benchmark.

Abstract

When a serious AOCS failure occurs in orbit the task of the designer is made, more complex. To achieve the minimum performance drop, managing a control system gravely degraded in its capabilities, can seem an impossible challenge. The experience of SAX Extended Science Mode (ESM) is the demonstration that exploiting all the features of the still working equipment and applying clever strategies and algorithms, it is possible to discover hidden failure tolerance degrees and permit the successful continuation of a mission apparently compromised. ESM project has been developed in teo steps. The former SW release (ESM1) was up-linked in August '97 to recover as fast as possible scientific functionality of SAX. it relies on a single gyro and is still working as no more gyro collapses occurred after May '97. When only one star tracker is available, the AOCS filter combines the co-ordinates of a star in the FOV with the unique available incremental angle data guaranteeing an accuracy compliant with the requirement. The latter version has been thought to be completely gyroless. It will permit extreme exploiting of satellite equipment up to usage, during scientific observations, of a sensor set nominally dedicated to safe mode (QSS and magnetometer). Those are the so-called bridinng phases that require a target recovery: a precise attitude reacquisition and the change of guide stars up to completion of the manoeuvre.

Abstract

Genetic linkage data have shown that alterations of the BRCA1 gene are responsible for the majority of hereditary breast and ovarian cancers. BRCA1 germline mutations, however, are found less frequently than expected. Mutation detection strategies, which are generally based on the polymerase chain reaction, therefore focus on point and small gene alterations. These approaches do not allow for the detection of large gene rearrangements, which also can be involved in BRCA1 alterations. Indeed, a few of them, spread over the entire BRCA1 gene, have been detected recently by Southern blotting or transcript analysis. We have developed an alternative strategy allowing a panoramic view of the BRCA1 gene, based on dynamic molecular combing and the design of a full four-color bar code of the BRCA1 region. The strategy was tested with the study of four large BRCA1 rearrangements previously reported. In addition, when screening a series of 10 breast and ovarian cancer families negatively tested for point mutation in BRCA1/2, we found an unreported 17-kb BRCA1 duplication encompassing exons 3 to 8. The detection of rearrangements as small as 2 to 6 kb with respect to the normal size of the studied fragment is achieved when the BRCA1 region is divided into 10 fragments. In addition, as the BRCA1 bar code is a morphologic approach, the direct observation of complex and likely underreported rearrangements, such as inversions and insertions, becomes possible.
