Based on the Gaia EDR3 astrometric parameters and our new systemic radial velocity of the high-mass X-ray binary 4U 2206+54/BD+53 2790, we studied the trace back motion of the system and propose that it originated in the subgroup of the Cepheus OB1 association (Age~4-10 Myr) with its brightest star BD+53 2820 (B0V; L~$10^{4.7}$L$_\odot$). The kinematic age of 4U 2206+54 is about 2.8$\pm$0.4 Myr, it is at a distance of 3.1-3.3 kpc and has a space velocity of 75-100 km/s with respect to this member star (BD+53 2820) of the Cep OB1 association. This runaway velocity indicates that the progenitor of the neutron star hosted by 4U 2206+54 lost about 4-9 $M_{\odot}$ during the supernova explosion and the latter one received a kick velocity of at least 200-350 km/s. Since the high-mass X-ray binary 4U 2206+54/BD+53 2790 was born as a member of a subgroup of Cep OB1, the initially most massive star in the system terminated its evolution within ~7-9 Myr, corresponding to an initial mass >= 32$M_{\odot}$., 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

R.; Zielinski, P., OJ 287 is a BL Lacertae type quasar in which the active galactic nucleus (AGN) outshines the host galaxy by an order of magnitude. The only exception to this may be at minimum light when the AGN activity is so low that the host galaxy may make quite a considerable contribution to the photometric intensity of the source. Such a dip or a fade in the intensity of OJ 287 occurred in 2017 November, when its brightness was about 1.75 mag lower than the recent mean level. We compare the observations of this fade with similar fades in OJ 287 observed earlier in 1989, 1999, and 2010. It appears that there is a relatively strong reddening of the B− V colours of OJ 287 when its V-band brightness drops below magnitude 17. Similar changes are also seen in V− R, V− I, and R− I colours during these deep fades. These data support the conclusion that the total magnitude of the host galaxy is V = 18.0 ± 0.3, corresponding to MK = −26.5 ± 0.3 in the K-band. This is in agreement with the results, obtained using the integrated surface brightness method, from recent surface photometry of the host. These results should encourage us to use the colour separation method also in other host galaxies with strongly variable AGN. In the case of OJ 287, both the host galaxy and its central black hole are among the biggest known, and its position in the black hole mass–galaxy mass diagram lies close to the mean correlation. © 2022 The Author(s). Hot Jupiters on extremely short-period orbits are expected to be unstable due to tidal dissipation and spiral toward their host stars. That is because they transfer the angular momentum of the orbital motion through tidal dissipation into the stellar interior. Although the magnitude of this phenomenon is related to the physical properties of a specific star-planet system, statistical studies show that tidal dissipation might shape the architecture of hot Jupiter systems during the stellar lifetime on the main sequence. Aims. The efficiency of tidal dissipation remains poorly constrained in star-planet systems. Stellar interior models show that the dissipation of dynamical tides in radiation zones could be the dominant mechanism driving planetary orbital decay. These theoretical predictions can be verified with the transit timing method. Methods. We acquired new precise transit mid-times for five planets. They were previously identified as the best candidates for which orbital decay might be detected. Analysis of the timing data allowed us to place tighter constraints on the orbital decay rate. Results. No statistically significant changes in their orbital periods were detected for all five hot Jupiters in systems HAT-P-23, KELT-1, KELT-16, WASP-18, and WASP-103. For planets HAT-P-23 b, WASP-18 b, and WASP-103 b, observations show that the mechanism of the dynamical tidal dissipation probably does not operate in their host stars, preventing their orbits from rapidly decaying. This finding aligns with the models of stellar interiors of F-type stars, in which dynamical tides are not fully damped due to convective cores. For KELT-16 b, the span of transit timing data was not long enough to verify the theoretical predictions. KELT-1 b was identified as a potential laboratory for studying the dissipative tidal interactions of inertial waves in a convective layer. Continued observations of those two planets may provide further empirical verification of the tidal dissipation theory. © G. After core hydrogen burning, massive stars evolve from blue-white dwarfs to red supergiants by expanding, brightening, and cooling within few millennia. We discuss a previously neglected constraint on mass, age, and evolutionary state of Betelgeuse and Antares, namely their observed colour evolution over historical times: We place all 236 stars bright enough for their colour to be discerned by the unaided eye (V$\le$3.3 mag) on the colour-magnitude-diagram (CMD), and focus on those in the Hertzsprung gap. We study pre-telescopic records on star colour with historically-critical methods to find stars that have evolved noticeably in colour within the last millennia. Our main result is that Betelgeuse was recorded with a colour significantly different (non-red) than today (red, B$-$V=$1.78 \pm 0.05$ mag). Hyginus (Rome) and Sima Qian (China) independently report it two millennia ago as appearing like Saturn (B$-$V=$1.09 \pm 0.16$ mag) in colour and `yellow' (quantifiable as B$-$V=$0.95 \pm 0.35$ mag), respectively (together, 5.1$\sigma$ different from today). The colour change of Betelgeuse is a new, tight constraint for single-star theoretical evolutionary models (or merger models). It is most likely located less than one millennium past the bottom of the red giant branch, before which rapid colour evolution is expected. Evolutionary tracks from MIST consistent with both its colour evolution and its location on the CMD suggest a mass of $\sim$14M$_{\odot}$ at $\sim$14 Myr. The (roughly) constant colour of Antares for the last three millennia also constrains its mass and age. Context. Young multiple stellar systems can host both circumstellar and circumbinary discs composed of gas and dust, and the orientations of circumbinary discs can be sculpted by the orientation and eccentricity of the central binaries. Studying multiple binary systems and their associated discs enables our understanding of the size and distribution of the planetary systems that subsequently form around them. Aims. A deep (~70%) and extended (~150 days) eclipse was seen towards the young multiple stellar system V773 Tau in 2010. We interpret it as being due to the passage of a circumbinary disc around the B components moving in front of the A components. Our aim is to characterise the orientation and structure of the disc, to refine the orbits of the sub-components, and to predict when the next eclipse will occur. Methods. We combined the photometry from several ground-based surveys, constructed a model for the light curve of the eclipse, and used high angular resolution imaging to refine the orbits of the three spatially resolved components of the system: A, B, and C. A frequency analysis of the light curves, including from the TESS satellite, enabled the characterisation of the rotational periods of the Aa and Ab stars. Results. A toy model of the circumbinary disc shows that it extends out to approximately 5 au around the B binary and has an inclination of 73° with respect to the orbital plane of AB, where the lower bound of the radius of the disc is constrained by the geometry of the AB orbit and the upper bound is set by the stability of the disc. We identify several frequencies in the photometric data that we attribute to rotational modulation of the Aa and Ab stellar companions. We produced the first determination of the orbit of the more distant C component around the AB system and limited its inclination to 93°. Conclusions. The high inclination and large diameter of the disc, together with the expected inclination of the disc from theory, suggest that B is an almost equal-mass, moderately eccentric binary. We identify the rotational periods of the Aa and Ab stars and a third frequency in the light curve that we attribute to the orbital period of the stars in the B binary. We predict that the next eclipse will occur around 2037, during which both detailed photometric and spectroscopic monitoring will characterise the disc in greater detail.

Recent advances in techniques of critical close reading of historical texts can now be applied to records of pre-telescopic celestial observations - allowing significant progress for analyzing and solving orbits of past comets: we exemplify our method by solving the orbit of the comet in AD 760 only with historical observations and then identify it with 1P/Halley. A detailed eyewitness record with drawing of a comet in AD 760 in the Syriac Chronicle of Zuqnin (finished AD 775/6) was not yet included in the study of its orbit - the Chinese reports alone do not yield a sufficient number of dated positions. We analyze the Syriac and Chinese sources with critical methods for quantitative astronomical usage, we also consider a few further records from the Mediterranean and West Asian area. With our conservatively derived dated positions we can determine the best fitting Keplerian orbital solution by least squares fitting yielding the orbital elements; the parameter ranges for non-periodic solutions and highly eccentric periodic solutions are consistent with each other. The allowed parameter ranges for perihelion distance and inclination are sufficiently small to identify the comet with 1P/Halley. Although 1P/Halley is the only comet, where the telescopic orbit is credibly linked to pre-telescopic returns, e.g. to AD 760, our identification confirms claims from extrapolating telescopic observations backward in time - here independently based on historical data. In particular, we obtained a precise perihelion time (760 May 19.1 \pm 1.7). The inferior conjunction between comet and Sun as on the previously published orbit (760 May 31.9) is shifted by about one day compared to our new orbit (June 1.8), only the new one is consistent with the last observation (June 1.0) before conjunction as reported in the Chronicle of Zuqnin. We present the latest results of an ongoing multiplicity survey of exoplanet hosts, which was initiated at the Astrophysical Institute and University Observatory Jena, using data from the second data release of the ESA-Gaia mission. In this study the multiplicity of 289 targets was investigated, all located within a distance of about 500 pc from the Sun. In total, 41 binary, and 5 hierarchical triple star systems with exoplanets were detected in the course of this project, yielding a multiplicity rate of the exoplanet hosts of about 16 %. A total of 61 companions (47 stars, a white dwarf, and 13 brown dwarfs) were detected around the targets, whose equidistance and common proper motion with the exoplanet hosts were proven with their precise Gaia DR2 astrometry, which also agrees with the gravitational stability of most of these systems. The detected companions exhibit masses from about 0.016 up to 1.66 M$_\odot$ and projected separations in the range between about 52 and 9555 au., 30 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences

We present the results of our power spectral density analysis for the BL Lac object OJ\,287, utilizing the {\it Fermi}-LAT survey at high-energy $\gamma$-rays, {\it Swift}-XRT in X-rays, several ground-based telescopes and the {\it Kepler} satellite in the optical, and radio telescopes at GHz frequencies. The light curves are modeled in terms of continuous-time auto-regressive moving average (CARMA) processes. Owing to the inclusion of the {\it Kepler} data, we were able to construct \emph{for the first time} the optical variability power spectrum of a blazar without any gaps across $\sim6$ dex in temporal frequencies. Our analysis reveals that the radio power spectra are of a colored-noise type on timescales ranging from tens of years down to months, with no evidence for breaks or other spectral features. The overall optical power spectrum is also consistent with a colored noise on the variability timescales ranging from 117 years down to hours, with no hints of any quasi-periodic oscillations. The X-ray power spectrum resembles the radio and optical power spectra on the analogous timescales ranging from tens of years down to months. Finally, the $\gamma$-ray power spectrum is noticeably different from the radio, optical, and X-ray power spectra of the source: we have detected a characteristic relaxation timescale in the {\it Fermi}-LAT data, corresponding to $\sim 150$\,days, such that on timescales longer than this, the power spectrum is consistent with uncorrelated (white) noise, while on shorter variability timescales there is correlated (colored) noise., Comment: ApJ accepted

We present a new observational campaign, DWARF, aimed at detection of circumbinary extrasolar planets using the timing of the minima of low-mass eclipsing binaries. The observations will be performed within an extensive network of relatively small to medium-size telescopes with apertures of ~20-200 cm. The starting sample of the objects to be monitored contains (i) low-mass eclipsing binaries with M and K components, (ii) short-period binaries with sdB or sdO component, and (iii) post-common-envelope systems containing a WD, which enable to determine minima with high precision. Since the amplitude of the timing signal increases with the orbital period of an invisible third component, the timescale of project is long, at least 5-10 years. The paper gives simple formulas to estimate suitability of individual eclipsing binaries for the circumbinary planet detection. Intrinsic variability of the binaries (photospheric spots, flares, pulsation etc.) limiting the accuracy of the minima timing is also discussed. The manuscript also describes the best observing strategy and methods to detect cyclic timing variability in the minima times indicating presence of circumbinary planets. First test observation of the selected targets are presented.

Transit timing analysis may be an effective method of discovering additional bodies in extrasolar systems which harbour transiting exoplanets. The deviations from the Keplerian motion, caused by mutual gravitational interactions between planets, are expected to generate transit timing variations of transiting exoplanets. In 2009 we collected 9 light curves of 8 transits of the exoplanet WASP-10b. Combining these data with published ones, we found that transit timing cannot be explained by a constant period but by a periodic variation. Simplified three-body models which reproduce the observed variations of timing residuals were identified by numerical simulations. We found that the configuration with an additional planet of mass of $\sim$0.1 $M_{\rm{J}}$ and orbital period of $\sim$5.23 d, located close to the outer 5:3 mean motion resonance, is the most likely scenario. If the second planet is a transiter, the estimated flux drop will be $\sim$0.3 per cent and can be observable with a ground-based telescope. Moreover, we present evidence that the spots on the stellar surface and rotation of the star affect the radial velocity curve giving rise to spurious eccentricity of the orbit of the first planet. We argue that the orbit of WASP-10b is essentially circular. Using the gyrochronology method, the host star was found to be $270 \pm 80$ Myr old. This young age can explain the large radius reported for WASP-10b.

Results from regular monitoring of relativistic compact binaries like PSR 1913+16 are consistent with the dominant (quadrupole) order emission of gravitational waves (GWs). We show that observations associated with the binary black hole central engine of blazar OJ 287 demand the inclusion of gravitational radiation reaction effects beyond the quadrupolar order. It turns out that even the effects of certain hereditary contributions to GW emission are required to predict impact flare timings of OJ 287. We develop an approach that incorporates this effect into the binary black hole model for OJ~287. This allows us to demonstrate an excellent agreement between the observed impact flare timings and those predicted from ten orbital cycles of the binary black hole central engine model. The deduced rate of orbital period decay is nine orders of magnitude higher than the observed rate in PSR 1913+16, demonstrating again the relativistic nature of OJ 287's central engine. Finally, we argue that precise timing of the predicted 2019 impact flare should allow a test of the celebrated black hole "no-hair theorem" at the 10% level., 24 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Photometric follow-ups of transiting exoplanets may lead to discoveries of additional, less massive bodies in extrasolar systems. This is possible by detecting and then analysing variations in transit timing of transiting exoplanets. We present photometric observations gathered in 2009 and 2010 for exoplanet WASP-3b during the dedicated transit-timing-variation campaign. The observed transit timing cannot be explained by a constant period but by a periodic variation in the observations minus calculations diagram. Simplified models assuming the existence of a perturbing planet in the system and reproducing the observed variations of timing residuals were identified by three-body simulations. We found that the configuration with the hypothetical second planet of the mass of about 15 Earth masses, located close to the outer 2:1 mean motion resonance is the most likely scenario reproducing observed transit timing. We emphasize, however, that more observations are required to constrain better the parameters of the hypothetical second planet in WASP-3 system. For final interpretation not only transit timing but also photometric observations of the transit of the predicted second planet and the high precision radial-velocity data are needed.

The vast majority of extrasolar planets are detected by indirect detection methods such as transit monitoring and radial velocity measurements. While these methods are very successful in detecting short-periodic planets, they are mostly blind to wide sub-stellar or even stellar companions on long orbits. In our study we present high resolution imaging observations of 63 exoplanet hosts carried out with the lucky imaging instrument AstraLux at the Calar Alto 2.2m telescope as well as with the new SPHERE high resolution adaptive optics imager at the ESO/VLT in the case of a known companion of specific interest. Our goal is to study the influence of stellar multiplicity on the planet formation process. We detected and confirmed 4 previously unknown stellar companions to the exoplanet hosts HD197037, HD217786, Kepler-21 and Kepler-68. In addition, we detected 11 new low-mass stellar companion candidates which must still be confirmed as bound companions. We also provide new astrometric and photometric data points for the recently discovered very close binary systems WASP-76 and HD2638. Furthermore, we show for the first time that the previously detected stellar companion to the HD185269 system is a very low mass binary. Recently, Neuhaeuser et al. (2005) presented evidence for a sub-stellar, common proper motion companion to GQ Lup. With two theoretical mass estimates, both below the Deuterium burning minimum mass limit, the companion is probably a planet imaged directly. We present here a more detailed astrometric analysis of the GQ Lup system, using all the (different) proper motions published for the primary. The common proper motion is significant in all cases, also when taking into account the error in parallax or distance (140 +- 50 pc). When using the weighted mean, the significance for common proper motion of GQ Lup and its companion is 7 + 4 sigma for no change in separation plus 8 sigma for no change in position angle. We also discuss the question, whether GQ Lup and its common-proper motion companion are not bound, but share the same or similar proper motion as two independent members of the Lupus T association, which is a moving group, where most members should have the same motion anyway. Given our discussion, this hypothesis can be rejected by several sigma: The probability to find by chance an L-dwarf fainter than Ks = 14 mag within 0.7325 arcsec with (almost) the same proper motion of GQ Lup is only < 3 10^{-10}. The orbital motion of the system is not yet detected (1.4 +- 2.2 mas/yr), but is probably smaller than the escape velocity (5.3 +- 2.1 mas/yr), so that the system may well be gravitationally bound and stable. We obtained deep H- and K-band images of DENIS-P J104814–395606 using SofI and the speckle camera SHARP-I at the ESO-3.5m-NTT as well as QUIRC at the Mauna Kea 2.2m telescope between December 2000 and June 2001. The target was recently discovered as nearby M9-dwarf among DENIS sources (Delfosse et al. 2001). We detect parallactic motion on our images and determine the distance to be 4.6 ± 0.3 pc, more precise than previously known. From the available colors, the distance, and the spectral type, we conclude from theoretical models that the star has a mass of ∼ 0.075 to 0.09 M⊙ and an age of ∼ 1 to 2 Gyrs. We also obtained H- and K-band spectra of this star with ISAAC at the VLT. A faint companion candidate is detected 6″ NNW of the star, which is 6.4 ± 0.5 mag fainter in H. However, according to another image taken several month later, the companion candidate is not co-moving with the M9-dwarf. Instead, it is a non-moving background object. Limits for undetected companion candidates are such that we can exclude any stellar companions outside of ∼ 0.25″ (1 AU), any brown dwarf companions (above the deuterium burning mass limit) outside of ∼ 2″ (9 AU), and also any companion down to ∼ 40 Mjup with ≥ 0.15″ (0.7 AU) separation, all calculated for an age of 2 Gyrs. Our observations show that direct imaging of sub-stellar companions near the deuterium burning mass limit in orbit around nearby ultra-cool dwarfs is possible, even with separations that are smaller than the semi-major axis of the outermost planet in our solar system, namely a few tens of AU.

The Ursa Major group is the closest moving group with its densest part being located in the direction of the Big Dipper constellation at a distance of about 25 pc. In spite of the small distance, the relatively young age of 200–600 Myrs, and the on average high proper motions, this sample of stars has not yet been addressed as a whole by direct imaging studies of sub‐stellar companions in wide orbits.We searched the fields around more than 20 nearby Ursa Major group members at a distance of less than 30 pc using adaptive optics and coronography with NAOS/CONICA at the ESO VLT, Chile. Many sub‐stellar companion candidates were detected in the first epoch imaging in 2003/2004. However the second epoch imaging in 2005/2006 revealed that none of these displayed common proper motion so that the candidates turned out to be unrelated objects.

Aims: We present new results from our ongoing multiplicity study of exoplanet host stars, carried out with SofI/NTT. We provide the most recent list of confirmed binary and triple star systems that harbor exoplanets. Methods: We use direct imaging to identify wide stellar and substellar companions as co-moving objects to the observed exoplanet host stars, whose masses and spectral types are determined with follow-up photometry and spectroscopy. Results: We found two new co-moving companions of the exoplanet host stars HD125612 and HD212301. HD125612B is a wide M4 dwarf (0.18 Msun) companion of the exoplanet host star HD125612, located about 1.5 arcmin (~4750 AU of projected separation) south-east of its primary. In contrast, HD212301B is a close M3 dwarf (0.35 Msun), which is found about 4.4 arcsec (~230 AU of projected separation) north-west of its primary. Conclusions: The binaries HD125612AB and HD212301AB are new members in the continuously growing list of exoplanet host star systems of which 43 are presently known. Hence, the multiplicity rate of exoplanet host stars is about 17%.
