Fetal repair of myelomeningocele (MMC) and myeloschisis leads to improved neurologic outcomes compared to postnatal repair, but the effects of modifications in closure techniques have not been extensively studied. Previous work has suggested that a watertight repair is requisite for improvement in hindbrain herniation (HBH) and to decrease postnatal hydrocephalus (HCP). Our institution adopted the myofascial closure technique for open fetal MMC repair in July 2019, which we hypothesized would result in decreased need for patch closure, improved HBH, and decreased rate of surgically-treated HCP.A single-center retrospective study of patients who underwent fetal MMC or myeloschisis repair between March 2013 and February 2022 was performed. Outcomes were evaluated (n = 70 prior to July 2019, n = 34 after July 2019). Statistical significance was determined by Fisher's exact and Chi square tests (p0.05 significant).Patients who underwent myofascial closure were less likely to require a patch for skin closure (14.7% vs 58.6%, p0.0001). Myofascial closure was also associated with an increased rate of HBH improvement on two-week postoperative fetal MRI (93.9% vs 65.7%, p = 0.002). Surgically-treated HCP at one year was lower in the myofascial closure group (n = 21), however this did not reach statistical significance (23.8% vs 41.9%, p = 0.19).We conclude that the myofascial closure technique for repair of fetal MMC and myeloschisis is associated with significantly decreased need for patch closure and improvement in hindbrain herniation compared to our previous skin closure technique. These results support a surgical approach that employs a multilayer watertight closure.

Research on strengths-based positive interventions (SBPIs) has often supported their effectiveness, but these studies overwhelmingly focus on experiential outcomes such as affect and subjective well-being. Much less is known about their effectiveness for eliciting positive behavioral outcomes. The current article provides a lexicon to clarify distinctions between various types of positive interventions. This is followed by a meta-analysis of studies examining behavioral outcomes from SBPIs. Multiple databases were searched through October 2020. Out of 418 studies evaluating what could be considered SBPIs, only 48 analyses across 29 articles examined group differences in a behavioral outcome. Random-effects meta-analysis of post-test data revealed a small to medium, statistically significant effect, Hedges’ g= 0.32. Evidence was insufficient to suggest small-study or methodological bias. SBPIs seemed effective for eliciting behavioral change relative to control conditions consistent with prior meta-analyses. However, the available data are too limited to support SBPIs as an alternative to traditional approaches that focus on direct symptom reduction.

This research explored the relationships among inner peace and character strengths, both of which are understood to contribute to wellbeing, using a cross-sectional design. In Study One (N = 25,302), we examined individuals’ perceptions of the strengths most relevant to fostering a sense of inner peace. In Study Two (N = 21,201), we examined relationships among individuals’ scores on the 24 character strengths and serenity and harmony in life. Interestingly, the strengths individuals believed to be important for fostering innerpeace (in Study One) were different from those found to actually correlate with measures of inner peace (in Study Two). Hope was most strongly associated with facets of serenity (inner haven, trust, and acceptance) and harmony in life. Our findings indicate that, hope, zest, and gratitude are likely primary facets of inner peace, with spirituality and forgiveness acting as secondary facets for inner peace. Implications and future directions are discussed.

Purpose This paper aims to examine how character strengths have an important dual role in mental health in both promoting well-being and mental wellness and also in reducing symptoms and suffering. While there are many studies that have touched upon variables that character strengths can enhance for mental well-being or reduce for suffering, the author actually knows very little about how character strengths might relate to or impact mental health. Design/methodology/approach A large-scale study of 12,050 individuals was conducted to explore the self-perceived character strengths that are most helpful for mental health, for handling physical adversity, for handling social adversity and for fostering psychological well-being. Findings Some character strengths showed a general effect – showing a strong perceived impact across multiple domains – such as love, perspective, kindness, hope, humor and curiosity. Other character strengths showed a specific effect in that there was a strong perceived impact in one domain, such as perseverance and self-regulation for physical health, spirituality and social intelligence for social health and creativity for mental health. A strength-based approach to understanding and managing emotions was substantially more preferred than cognitive or behavioral approaches. Other findings examined the character strengths most desired to be improved upon for mental health. Research limitations/implications The research strategy was cross-sectional, thereby causality cannot be determined. Because of the large sample size, researchers are encouraged to consider examining the findings in intervention studies. Practical implications This study indicates that character strengths are highly relevant for mental health, all 24 character strengths are possible pathways to impact mental health (some more than others) and individuals can readily connect ways they can use their character strengths to positively improve their well-being and manage their suffering. Social implications Character strengths and their substantial positive potential provide an avenue for public impact on a large scale. Originality/value To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first known study to directly examine multiple intersections among mental health and character strengths in a large sample.

We examine associations between 24 character strengths (CS) and 15 health-related outcomes. We hypothesize that CS are favorably associated with positive health-related quality of life (HRQoL) outcomes, health behaviors, purpose in life, and lead to lower disease risk. Data from a large sample of approximately 60,000 respondents from 159 countries were used. CS yielding the most significant favorable associations across HRQoL outcomes were zest, self-regulation, hope, and gratitude. Concerning health behaviors, the primary character strengths were zest and self-regulation, while for a sense of purpose in life, these were hope, spirituality, and zest. The most consistently unfavorable association with the outcomes was observed for the strength of appreciation of beauty. Some negative associations may result from suboptimal use of CS.

In congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), ultrasound (U/S) measurements of the contralateral lung commonly provide the observed-to-expected lung-to-head ratio (O/E LHR) and are used to determine the severity of pulmonary hypoplasia. Fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurement of the observed-to-expected total lung volume (O/E TLV) has been used as an adjunct to O/E LHR in predicting outcomes. Since O/E LHR only measures the contralateral lung, we sought to investigate if MRI measurements of the contralateral lung volume (O/E CLV) can accurately predict outcomes in CDH. We hypothesize that O/E CLV is a better predictor of CDH outcomes than O/E LHR. We identified all infants with a prenatal diagnosis of CDH at our fetal center who had both MRI and U/S measurements. Using lung volume ratios of right–left 55:45, we calculated O/E CLV from O/E TLV. We used receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves to calculate the area under the curve (AUC) to compare the predictive accuracy of O/E CLV to O/E LHR for ECMO support, as well as survival to both discharge and 1 year. Seventy-four patients had complete prenatal imaging with 39% requiring ECMO support. The median O/E CLV was 48.0% and the median O/E LHR was 42.3%. O/E CLV was a better predictor of the need for ECMO support (AUC 0.81 vs. 0.74). O/E CLV was a better predictor of survival to discharge (AUC 0.84 vs. 0.64) and 1-year survival (AUC 0.83 vs. 0.63) than O/E LHR. O/E LHR is a well-validated standard for predicting outcomes and guiding prenatal counseling in CDH. We provide evidence that fetal MRI measurements of the contralateral lung volume corrected for gestational age were more accurate in predicting the need for ECMO and survival. Future prospective studies validating O/E CLV regarding outcomes and ECMO utilization are warranted. Level III, retrospective comparative study.

The integration of mindfulness and character strengths is an emerging area of research and practice. The evidence-based, 8-week program, Mindfulness-Based Strengths Practice (MBSP) represents a unique approach in that the starting point and focus is on what is best in human beings – their character strengths. These qualities are then leveraged to improve one’s meditation practice or area of mindful living (referred to as “strong mindfulness”) and in turn, mindfulness is used as a lens for deepening awareness and use of strengths (referred to as “mindful strengths use”). While early controlled studies find MBSP to elicit well-being and reduce stress, and find it to be superior to popular mindfulness programs for different outcomes, we are not aware of any published qualitative analyses examining the MBSP participant’s experience. This study offers insights from a large international sample and extends the empirical data on MBSP, including the novel finding of benefit for building positive relationships, as well as confirming other findings such as the most common obstacles people confront in mindfulness practices. Additional areas discussed using qualitative and quantitative findings include the most beneficial mindfulness/character strengths practices, the use of inward and outward-oriented practices, cognizance of the integration of mindfulness and character strengths, and self-reported positive outcomes, including substantial benefits to stress and problem management and boosts to meaning, purpose, engagement, accomplishment, and sense of self.

BACKGROUND Skin aging is an inevitable process with one of the key features of aging being dryness or flakiness of the skin. Previous in vivo and in vitro testing has highlighted that a silk-based product may be effective in improving moisture retention in skin. METHODS We evaluated the safety and efficacy of our silk-based product through a combination of objective- including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and EpiDerm Skin Irritation tests - and subjective tests - including direct evaluation of patient's own perception of their skin. RESULTS In alignment with previous studies, patients reported significant concerns about aging, wrinkling, or saggy skin. We found that our silk-based product was safe and effective in improving hydration and resilience of facial skin and a majority of participants stated they would continue to use this product, when commercially available. CONCLUSION Our novel silk-based product, NanoSilk Cosmo, is safe for use on human facial skin and it improves skin resiliency and hydration.

Over the last two decades, fetal imaging has greatly improved, and new prenatal imaging measurements have been developed to characterize congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) severity.To determine the best prenatal imaging predictor of postnatal CDH outcomes, including use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and in-hospital mortality, with particular attention to the percentage of liver herniation (%LH) as a predictor. Additionally, we sought to guide best practices across hospital systems including improved models of prenatal risk assessment.We conducted a retrospective review of infants with left CDH who were prenatally diagnosed. We analyzed prenatal imaging measurements including observed-to-expected (O/E) lung-to-head ratio (LHR) on US, percentage predicted lung volume (PPLV) on MRI, and O/E total fetal lung volume (TFLV) and %LH on MRI. We compared prenatal imaging characteristics for infants with (1) in-hospital postnatal mortality and (2) use of ECMO. Then we performed multivariate logistic regression to determine independent predictors of postnatal outcomes.We included 63 infants with a median gestation of 34 weeks at the time of prenatal MRI. Low O/E LHR (31.2 vs. 50, P 0.0001), PPLV (14.7 vs. 22.6, P 0.0001) and O/E TLFV (24.6 vs. 38.3, P 0.0001) and high %LH (15.1 vs. 2.1, P = 0.0006) were associated with worse postnatal outcomes; however, only PPLV was predictive of survival and need for ECMO on multivariable analysis. PPLV survival to discharge model showed an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.93 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.86, 0.99), P 0.0001; and an odds ratio of 68.7 (95% CI: 6.5-2,302), P = 0.003. PPLV need for ECMO model showed AUC = 0.87 (95% CI: 0.78, 0.96), P 0.0001; and odds ratio = 20.1 (95% CI: 3.1-226.3), P = 0.011.Low O/E LHR, PPLV and O/E TFLV and high %LH in the third trimester are associated with worse postnatal outcomes. PPLV most strongly predicted outcome using a logistic regression model. Percentage of liver herniation was not an independent predictor of outcomes.

Hikikomori, or social withdrawal youth has become one of the most pressing social issues in Japan and this phenomenon is increasing in other countries as well. While there is a movement to pathologize this phenomenon as a new psychological disorder, these case reports provide a fresh perspective of hikikomori using the lens of character strengths in the scientific field of positive psychology. These case reports illustrate how the hikikomori phenomenon can be understood, at least in part, using the framework of character strengths overuse, underuse, and optimal use by conducting the character strengths intervention for hikikomori youth. The authors offer examples of combinations of overuse and underuse of character strengths, with particular attention to the unique signature strengths, among hikikomori youth. Future directions of research include an empirical investigation of the relationship between the hikikomori phenomenon and the notion of overuse, underuse, and optimal use of character strengths, potentially using research methodology.

Understanding factors that influence real-world public conservation behaviors is critical for developing successful conservation policies and management actions. Citizens of Colorado, USA recently passed a ballot initiative to restore the gray wolf to its former range within the state. The3 million votes offer an unprecedented opportunity to test factors that influenced decisions to support or oppose this conservation action. We created spatial linear regression models to assess the relationship between support for wolf restoration and (1) the presidential vote, (2) distance to conservation intervention (i.e., proposed wolf reintroduction and existing wolves), and measures of (3) livelihood and (4) demographics using precinct-level data. Our results demonstrate the strong relationship between support for wolf restoration and political support for the Democratic candidate for president in the 2020 election, and highlight how other factors, including increased age, participation in elk hunting, and proximity to the reintroduction region were associated with less support. Our findings underscore the critical role of politicization on public conservation action and the need to develop outreach and engagement strategies to mitigate polarization.

Good movies have the potential to capture a trifecta of meaning: they can be enjoyable, engaging, and empowering. In other words, we experience pleasure, focused attention and concentration, and are inspired toward the good or reach new insights into ourselves, others, or the human condition. Drawing on the rapidly emerging science in character strengths, areas of integration with cinematherapy are outlined and explored. A therapeutic change model for character strengths cinematherapy is discussed, with emphasis on the roles of cinematic elevation and cinematic admiration. Practical suggestions to help therapists match client goals, well-being areas, signature strengths, lower strengths, and psychopathology or problem areas are framed. While integration into large scale projects to impact social change is possible with character strengths cinematherapy, the starting point is helping therapists to use this approach with the client in front of them to promote that change one person at a time.

This report presents a case of necrotizing pancreatitis resulting in a large hepatic subcapsular hematoma that led to development of hepatic ischemia and early stages of liver failure. Following surgical decompression, liver function dramatically improved, but large areas of peripheral hepatic infarction had developed. This case demonstrates the risks of a rapidly expanding hepatic subcapsular hematoma, emphasizes the importance of recognizing and aggressively treating active bleeding, and cautions against administering anticoagulation and tissue-plasminogen activator in this clinical scenario. Wound healing is of major clinical concern and is constantly being explored for early restoration and enhanced recovery. While the etiology of the wound healing is multifactorial, high inflammation and increased oxidative stress which results in chronic inflammation, endothelial dysfunction and collagen degradation, delay the overall healing process. Thus, visual sensing of the oxidative stress would be highly informative in the successful implementation of wound healing therapies based on specific requirements. In this study, electrospinning was used to fabricate silk fibroin nanofibrous mats infused with Amplex red capable of detecting hydrogen peroxide, a reactive oxygen molecule. These mats produced a visible change in color with the limit of detection at 1 μM H2O2 concentration. In vivo studies carried out in diabetic mice with impaired wounds also displayed a visible change in color of the mats infused with Amplex red within 24 hours. These electrospun silk fibroin nanofibrous Amplex infused mats has the potential to enable a futuristic platform where decisions can be made for enhanced wound healing therapy.

Researchers in philosophy and psychology have called for an integration of the science of positive psychology with the humanities, to catalyze new avenues of flourishing throughout society. Religion, as a field within the humanities, may be well poised to be integrated with positive psychology, namely character strengths, to promote flourishing. On the other hand, religious institutions have entrenched and sacrosanct perspectives and traditions, which may preclude them from using the science to become houses of human flourishing. To explore this potential integration, the Flourishing Congregations Project was developed. The project included ten distinguished rabbis who were immersed in the science of character strengths and well-being, and were tasked with developing insights and practices to modify their High Holidays services to meaningfully impact their congregants. The chapter presents qualitative findings of this project, including examples of receptivity and barriers to change among rabbis and congregants, and broader implications across congregations and communities.

The Holocaust has become recognized as a defining event of the twentieth century, with vast implications for the understanding of humanity and the inner workings of government and technology, religion, and culture. The event offers significant insight into the capacity of “ordinary” individuals and groups in the commission of radical evil. It also offers insight into humanity, the insistency of altruistic good, resilience, and the expression of character strengths, especially by way of individuals who behaved not as bystanders but as “upstanders,” taking action despite danger, expressing their courage and moral conviction against perpetrators and their collaborators by helping the victims, and choosing to act in a humane manner. This chapter offers an exemplary case of the creation of a first-ever Holocaust and Humanity Museum in Cincinnati, Ohio, and documents the task, challenges, and unique design of the entire exhibition.

Pressure ulcers are preventable, yet highly prevalent, chronic wounds that have significant patient morbidity and high healthcare costs. Like other chronic wounds, they are characterized by impaired wound healing due to dysregulated immune processes. This review will highlight key biochemical pathways in the pathogenesis of pressure injury and how this signaling leads to impaired wound healing. This review is the first to comprehensively describe the current literature on microRNA (miRNA, miR) regulation of pressure ulcer pathophysiology.

Diabetic wounds represent a significant healthcare burden and are characterized by impaired wound healing due to increased oxidative stress and persistent inflammation. We have shown that CNP-miR146a synthesized by the conjugation of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CNP) to microRNA (miR)-146a, improves diabetic wound healing. CNP are divalent metal oxides that act as free radical scavenger, while miR146a inhibits the pro-inflammatory NFκB pathway, so CNP-miR146a has a synergistic role in modulating both oxidative stress and inflammation. In this study, we define the mechanism(s) by which CNP-miR146a improves diabetic wound healing by examining immunohistochemical and gene expression analysis of markers of inflammation, oxidative stress, fibrosis, and angiogenesis. We have found that intradermal injection of CNP-miR146a increases wound collagen, enhances angiogenesis, and lowers inflammation and oxidative stress, ultimately promoting faster closure of diabetic wounds.

Shifting the public towards plant-based diets is critical for achieving environmental and public health outcomes. Increasingly news articles and organizations have begun using the saliency of the COVID-19 crisis to highlight the link between animal agriculture, pandemic risks, and other widespread public health threats. Yet, little is known about the effectiveness of this messaging strategy for motivating dietary change. We conducted a randomized trial with an online sample to examine the impact of: (1) a message that uses the saliency of the COVID-19 pandemic to highlight the risk of disease transmission from factory farms, and (2) a message that uses the saliency of the COVID-19 pandemic to highlight the threat to worker's health created by factory farms. We examine whether these messages are more effective at changing beliefs about and behavioral intentions towards plant-based eating, as compared to more traditional messages that highlight the environmental, personal health, or animal welfare implications of factory farmed meat consumption. We find that all messages differentially influenced beliefs about the various negative consequences of meat consumption. However, these altered beliefs did not differentially motivate changes in respondents' intentions to reduce meat consumption and choose plant-based alternatives. This was possibly due to the numerous other barriers to behavior change identified in qualitative survey responses, such as cost, taste, and social factors. We did find that messages that highlight the personal health benefits of reduced meat consumption were more effective at increasing public trust in the message deliverer. Our results suggest that highlighting personal health benefits in messaging and addressing the additional identified barriers to behavior change may be critical for building trust and shifting the public towards plant-based diets.

Psychological traits, such as character strengths, have been already established in experimental studies as factors playing a favorable role for well-being and potentially reducing the risk of depression. Positive associations have been also reported between character strengths and physical fitness, self-reported physical and mental health. Yet, evidence with large scale, epidemiological data on the role of character strength of honesty and integrity (CSHI) in shaping subsequent health outcomes and daily functioning remains unexplored. We examined whether the character strength of honesty and integrity was prospectively associated with six physical health outcomes, two depression outcomes, and two daily functioning outcomes. We used data from the Health and Retirement Study obtained from a sample of 9813 older adults. We found that after a 4-year follow-up period, compared with individuals who scored the lowest in CSHI, participants who scored in the third tertile had a 18% lower risk of lung disease (RR = 0.824; 95% CI = 0.732; 0.927), and a 11% lower risk of depression (RR = 0.891; 95% CI = 0.806; 0.986). They also reported lower limitations in mobility (β = −0.048; 95% CI (−0.089; −0.008)] and less difficulty in instrumental activities of daily living [β = −0.088; 95% CI (−0.128; −0.047)]. These associations were independent of demographics, prior socioeconomic status, psychological factors, health conditions, and health behaviors. Policy makers and practitioners may consider the character strength of honesty and integrity as a factor for promoting healthy longevity, limiting risks of becoming physically inactive and reducing risk of physical and mental disease.

Conservation across human-dominated landscapes requires an understanding of the social and ecological factors driving outcomes. Studies that link conservation outcomes to social and ecological factors have examined temporally static patterns. However, there may be different social and ecological processes driving increases and decreases in conservation outcomes that can only be revealed through temporal analyses. Through a case study of the invasion of Falcataria moluccana in Hawaii, we examined the association of social factors with increases and decreases in invader distributions over time and space. Over 7 years, rates of invader decrease varied substantially (66-100%) relative to social factors, such as building value, whether land was privately or publically owned, and primary residence by a homeowner, whereas rates of increase varied only slightly (0.1-3.6%) relative to such factors. These findings suggest that links between social factors and invasion in the study system may be driven more by landowners controlling existing invasive species, rather than by landowners preventing the spread of invasive species. We suggest that spatially explicit, time-dependent analyses provide a more nuanced understanding of the way social factors influence conservation outcomes. Such an understanding can help managers develop outreach programs and policies targeted at different types of landowners in human-dominated landscapes.Uso de un Análisis Espacialmente Explícito y Dependiente del Tiempo para Entender cómo Influyen los Factores Sociales sobre los Resultados de la Conservación Resumen La conservación dentro de los paisajes dominados por humanos requiere de un entendimiento de los factores sociales y ecológicos que afectan los resultados. Sin embargo, puede haber diferentes procesos sociales y ecológicos que produzcan un incremento o una disminución en los resultados de la conservación, los cuales sólo pueden ser revelados por medio de los análisis temporales. Examinamos la asociación entre los factores sociales y el incremento y la disminución de la distribución de una invasión en el tiempo y el espacio con el estudio de caso de la invasión de Falcataria moluccana en Hawái. Life is a collection of moments, some light and pleasant, some dark and unpleasant, some neutral. Character strengths contribute to the full range of human experiences, influencing and creating positive opportunities while also helping us to endure the mundane and embrace and navigate the struggles. Some researchers have argued that thriving, which casts a wider net on the human experience than constructs such as flourishing or resilience, constitutes strong well-being and performance at times of both adversity and opportunity (Brown et al. 2017). With this and the many findings in the science of character in mind, six character strengths functions are theorized and then applied across time orientations, making the case for the integral role of character strengths in these matters of thriving. Three opportunity functions are offered, including priming in which character strengths prompt and prepare for strengths awareness and use; mindfulness in which character strengths serve in synergy with mindful awareness of the present reality; and appreciation in which character strengths use expresses value for what has occurred. The three adversity functions include: buffering – character strengths use prevents problems; reappraisal – character strengths explain or reinterpret problems; and resilience – character strengths support the bounce-back from life setbacks. Several applications of these six functions for vocational and educational settings are explored.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a devastating pulmonary disease with significant in-hospital mortality and is the leading cause of death in COVID-19 patients. Excessive leukocyte recruitment, unregulated inflammation, and resultant fibrosis contribute to poor ARDS outcomes. Nanoparticle technology with cerium oxide nanoparticles (CNP) offers a mechanism by which unstable therapeutics such as the anti-inflammatory microRNA-146a can be locally delivered to the injured lung without systemic uptake. In this study, we evaluated the potential of the radical scavenging CNP conjugated to microRNA-146a (termed CNP-miR146a) in preventing acute lung injury (ALI) following exposure to bleomycin. We have found that intratracheal delivery of CNP-miR146a increases pulmonary levels of miR146a without systemic increases, and prevents ALI by altering leukocyte recruitment, reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, and decreasing collagen deposition, ultimately improving pulmonary biomechanics., Graphical Abstract Bleomycin-induced lung injury produces a robust inflammatory response with increases in oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory markers such as IL-6. Diabetes mellitus is a costly disease and nearly one-third of these costs are attributed to management of diabetic foot disease including chronic, non-healing, diabetic foot ulcers. Therefore, much effort has been placed into understanding the pathogenesis of diabetic wounds and novel therapeutics. A relatively new area of interest has been macrophage polarization and its role in diabetic wound healing. Diabetic wounds show dysregulated and persistent M1 (pro-inflammatory) macrophage polarization whereas normal wounds will display a transition to M2 (pro-healing) macrophages around day three after wounding. We reviewed factors known to affect macrophage polarization, mostly focused on those that contribute to M2 macrophage polarization, and potential treatments that at least in part target macrophage polarization in the diabetic wound bed. Much of the work has been aimed at reducing hyperglycemia and encouraging pro-inflammatory cytokine neutralization or decreased expression given this has a significant role in producing M1 macrophages. Treatment of diabetic wounds will likely require a multi-modal approach including management of underlying diabetes and control of hyperglycemia, topical therapeutics, and prevention of secondary infection and inflammation.

Research suggests that encouraging motivated residents to reach out to others in their social network is an effective strategy for increasing the scale and speed of conservation action adoption. However, little is known about how to effectively encourage large numbers of residents to reach out to others about conservation causes. We examined the influence of normative and efficacy‐based messaging at motivating residents to engage in and to encourage others to participate in native plant gardening in their community. To do so, we conducted a field experiment with messages on mailings and tracked native plant vouchers used. Efficacy messages tended to be more effective than normative messages at increasing residents’ willingness to reach out to others to encourage conservation action, as indicated by a several percentage point increase in native plant voucher use by residents’ friends and neighbors. Messages sometimes had different impacts on residents based on past behaviors and perceptions related to native plant gardening. Among these subgroups, efficacy and combined efficacy and norm messages most effectively encouraged individual and collective actions, as indicated by increased voucher usage. Our findings suggest that interventions that build residents’ efficacy for engaging in a conservation behavior and for reaching out to others may be a promising path forward for outreach. However, given our results were significant at a false discovery rate cutoff of 0.25 but not 0.05, more experimental trials are needed to determine the robustness of these trends., Article impact statement: Certain messages may be more effective at encouraging residents to reach out to others about conservation.

Character strengths interventions constitute a diverse and highly promising subset of strategies and programs within the larger field of positive education. The diversity in this developing subgroup can be distinguished along a number of variables; however, central to effective and sustained intervention is the commitment to a systems approach to implementation. Through the practiced-based evidence of exemplars around the world, an emerging model for a systems approach to character strengths program implementation is being reified. Character strengths implementations grounded in systems change express a unique opportunity in that character strengths are simultaneously the content of the intervention and an effective process element for a systems approach to change.

Its pathogenesis is characterized by unrestrained oxidative stress and inflammation, with long-term sequelae of pulmonary fibrosis and diminished lung function. Unfortunately, prior therapeutic ARDS trials have failed and therapy is limited to supportive measures. Free radical scavenging cerium oxide nanoparticles (CNP) conjugated to the anti-inflammatory microRNA-146a (miR146a), termed CNP-miR146a, have been shown to prevent acute lung injury in a pre-clinical model. In this study, we evaluated the potential of delayed treatment with CNP-miR146a at three or seven days after injury to rescue the lung from acute injury. We found that intratracheal CNP-miR146a administered three days after injury lowers pulmonary leukocyte infiltration, reduces inflammation and oxidative stress, lowers pro-fibrotic gene expression and collagen deposition in the lung, and ultimately improves pulmonary function., Graphical Abstract Bleomycin-induced lung injury initiates an acute inflammatory response with higher leukocyte recruitment and increased oxidative stress.
