Abstract

Precipitation-hardened Cu–Cr–Zr alloy is proposed as a heat sink material for various components of the ITER owing to its high strength, high conductivity, and superior resistance against neutron irradiation. Oxide-dispersion-strengthened copper (ODS-Cu) was selected as the candidate material. Hydrogen embrittlement of Cu–Cr–Zr, Cu–Cr, and ODS-Cu (GlidCop® CuAl60) alloys was evaluated using the slow strain rate technique (SSRT) in 0.1 M sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) solutions under cathodic hydrogen charging or after D2 gas exposure. Thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) measurements were performed to estimate the differences in the hydrogen-trapping sites using hydrogen charging methods. According to the TDS results, the quantity of hydrogen retained in ODS-Cu exceeded that in the other alloys by an order of magnitude because of hydrogen trapping at the grain boundaries and the particle/matrix interface. Cu–Cr–Zr alloys tend to trap more hydrogen than Cu–Cr alloys because of the addition of Zr. As a result of the SSRT, no hydrogen embrittlement was observed in any alloy, regardless of the hydrogen charging method. All alloys exhibited excellent hydrogen embrittlement resistance under the conditions adopted in this study.

Abstract

In situ meteorological data are essential to better understand ongoing environmental changes in the Arctic. Here, we present a dataset of quality-controlled meteorological observations from two automatic weather stations in northwest Greenland from July 2012 to the end of August 2020. The stations were installed in the accumulation area on the Greenland Ice Sheet (SIGMA-A site, 1490 m a.s.l.) and near the equilibrium line of the Qaanaaq Ice Cap (SIGMA-B site, 944 m a.s.l.). We describe the two-step sequence of quality-controlling procedures that we used to create increasingly reliable datasets by masking erroneous data records. Those datasets are archived in the Arctic Data archive System (ADS) (SIGMA-A – https://doi.org/10.17592/001.2022041303, Nishimura et al., 2023f; SIGMA-B – https://doi.org/10.17592/001.2022041306, Nishimura et al., 2023c). We analyzed the resulting 2012–2020 time series of air temperature, surface height, and surface albedo and histograms of longwave radiation (a proxy of cloudiness). We found that surface height increased, and no significant albedo decline in summer was observed at the SIGMA-A site. In contrast, high air temperatures and frequent clear-sky conditions in the summers of 2015, 2019, and 2020 at the SIGMA-B site caused significant albedo and surface lowering. Therefore, it appears that these weather condition differences led to the apparent surface height decrease at the SIGMA-B site but not at the SIGMA-A site. We anticipate that this quality-controlling method and these datasets will aid in climate studies of northwest Greenland and will contribute to the advancement of broader polar climate studies.

Abstract

Ryugu is a second-generation C-type asteroid formed by the reassembly of fragments of a previous larger body in the main asteroid belt. While the majority of Ryugu samples returned by Hayabusa2 are composed of a lithology dominated by aqueously altered minerals, clasts of pristine olivine and pyroxene remain in the least-altered lithologies. These clasts are objects of great interest for revealing the composition of the dust from which the original building blocks of Ryugu's parent asteroid formed. Here we show that some grains rich in olivine, pyroxene, and amorphous silicates discovered in one millimeter-sized stone of Ryugu have infrared spectra similar to the D-type asteroid Hektor (a Jupiter Trojan), to comet Hale–Bopp, and to some anhydrous interplanetary dust particles of probable cometary origin. This result indicates that Ryugu's primary parent body incorporated anhydrous ingredients similar to the building blocks of asteroids (and possibly some comets) formed in the outer solar system, and that Ryugu retained valuable information on the formation and evolution of planetesimals at different epochs of our solar system's history.

Abstract

Abstract We present the first direct search for lepton flavour violating muon decay mediated by a new light particle X, $$\upmu ^+ \rightarrow \mathrm {e}^+\mathrm {X}, \mathrm {X} \rightarrow \upgamma \upgamma \ $$ μ + → e + X , X → γ γ . This search uses a dataset resulting from $$7.5\times 10^{14}$$ 7.5 × 10 14 stopped muons collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut in the period 2009–2013. No significant excess is found in the mass region 20–45 MeV/c $$^2$$ 2 for lifetimes below 40 ps, and we set the most stringent branching ratio upper limits in the mass region of 20–40 MeV/c $$^2$$ 2 , down to $${\mathcal {O}}(10^{-11})$$ O ( 10 - 11 ) at 90% confidence level.

Abstract Background Palliative care (PC) is increasingly recognized as essential for oncology care, and several academic societies strongly recommend integrating oncology and palliative care (IOP) in daily practice. Similarly, the Japanese government encouraged the implementation of IOP through the Cancer Control Act of 2007; however, its detailed progress remains unclear. Therefore, this cross-sectional nationwide survey was conducted to investigate the current status and hospital executive physicians’ perception of IOP. Methods The questionnaire was developed based on IOP indicators with international consensus. It was distributed to executive physicians at all government-designated cancer hospitals (DCHs, n = 399) and matched non-DCHs (n = 478) in November 2017 and the results were compared. Results In total, 269 (67.4%) DCHs and 259 (54.2%) non-DCHs responded. Abstract The MEG experiment, designed to search for the $${\mu ^+ \rightarrow \hbox {e}^+ \gamma }$$ μ+→e+γ decay, completed data-taking in 2013 reaching a sensitivity level of $${5.3\times 10^{-13}}$$ 5.3×10-13 for the branching ratio. In order to increase the sensitivity reach of the experiment by an order of magnitude to the level of $$6\times 10^{-14}$$ 6×10-14 , a total upgrade, involving substantial changes to the experiment, has been undertaken, known as MEG II. We present both the motivation for the upgrade and a detailed overview of the design of the experiment and of the expected detector performance.

Abstract

The flash cycle (FC) has been proposed as a power cycle for heat recovery at low temperature. The FC is not constrained by the pinch point of the heat exchanger in the heat source in contrast to the Rankine cycle (RC), because the temperature difference for heat exchange is reduced by sensible heat exchange. However, the energy efficiency of the conventional FC is insufficient because of the low efficiency of power generation. It is considered that the low efficiency is mainly due to the flash rate at low temperature being low theoretically. Moreover, the heat of the saturated liquid is not used sufficiently. Hence, an energy- saving FC was proposed as an improvement of the conventional FC in this research. The proposed FC includes not only an expander line from the flash evaporator to generate power, but also a liquid heat recirculation line from the flash evaporator to use the sensible heat of the saturated liquid. The liquid heat recirculation increases the efficiency of power generation.

Abstract

Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is a promising procedure that enables en bloc resection of large superficial tumors in the upper gastrointestinal tract. On the other hand, ESD in the colon and rectum is technically difficult to perform because of its anatomical features. At our institution, 137 consecutive superficial colorectal tumors larger than 20 mm in diameter in 137 patients were treated by ESD between April 2007 and October 2010, and 132 lesions were successfully resected. The average procedure time was 79.2 minutes, and the rate of en bloc resection was 89.1% (122/137). The rate of complete resection, defined as en bloc resection with tumor-free lateral and vertical margins, was 85.4% (117/137). The rate of perforation was 3.6% (5/137). Colorectal ESD achieved a high rate of en bloc resection and complete resection and is applicable in the colorectum.

Abstract

Carbonaceous chondrites are considered to have originated from C-type asteroids and represent some of the most primitive material in our solar system. Furthermore, since carbonaceous chondrites can contain significant quantities of volatile elements, they may have played a crucial role in supplying volatiles and organic material to Earth and other inner solar system bodies. However, a major challenge of unravelling the volatile composition of chondritic meteorites is distinguishing between which features were inherited from the parent body, and what may be a secondary feature attributable to terrestrial weathering. In December 2020, the Hayabusa2 mission of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) successfully returned surface material from the C-type asteroid (162173) Ryugu to Earth. This material has now been classified as closely resembling CI-type chondrites, which are the most chemically pristine meteorites. The analysis of material from the surface of Ryugu therefore provides a unique opportunity to analyse the volatile composition of material that originated from a CI-type asteroid without the complications arising from terrestrial contamination. Given their highly volatile nature, the noble gas and nitrogen inventories of chondrites are highly sensitive to different alteration processes on the asteroid parent body, and to terrestrial contamination. Here, we investigate the nitrogen and noble gas signature of two pelletized grains collected from the first and second touchdown sites (Okazaki et al., 2022a), to provide an insight into the formation and alteration history of Ryugu. The concentration of trapped noble gas in the Ryugu samples is greater than the average composition of previously measured CI chondrites and are primarily derived from phase Q, although a significant contribution of presolar nanodiamond Xe-HL is noted. The large noble gas concentrations coupled with a significant contribution of presolar nanodiamonds suggests that the Ryugu samples may represent some of the most primitive unprocessed material from the early solar system. In contrast to the noble gases, the abundance of nitrogen and δ15N composition of the two Ryugu pellets are lower than the average CI chondrite value. We attribute the lower nitrogen abundances and δ15N measured in this study to the preferential loss of a 15N-rich phase from our samples during aqueous alteration on the parent planetesimal. The analyses of other grains returned from Ryugu have shown large variations in nitrogen concentrations and δ15N indicating that alteration fluids heterogeneously interacted with material now present on the surface of Ryugu. Finally, the ratio of trapped noble gases to nitrogen is higher than CI chondrites, and is closer to refractory phase Q and nanodiamonds. This indicates that Ryugu experienced aqueous alteration that led to the significant and variable loss of nitrogen, likely from soluble organic matter, without modification of the noble gas budget, which is primarily hosted in insoluble organic matter and presolar diamonds and is therefore more resistant to aqueous alteration., Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, 345, ISSN:0016-7037, ISSN:1872-9533

11. Leveraging Campus Landscapes for Public Health: A Pilot Study to Understand the Psychological Effects of Urban Sheep Grazing on College Campuses

Abstract

Since the 1980s, college students in the U.S. have self-reported a decline in their physical and emotional health. With these conditions compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic and its physical distancing restrictions, higher education institutions have an increased responsibility to establish strategic interventions and health-promoting programs for their students. Research collaborations between public health professionals and environmental designers have highlighted the benefits of environmental factors, such as wildlife, street trees, and public parks, on mental health. This pilot project aims to build upon the transdisciplinary dialogue between ecology, design, and public health by examining the social benefits of grazing lawnscape management, which is the practice of using herbivorous livestock to manage turfgrass areas. Through the design of an accessible central campus grazing space for a flock of 25 sheep and use of online questionnaires, a smartphone-based single-item survey, and open-ended feedback given via social media, the UC Davis Sheepmower Project addresses three primary questions: (1) Are there differences in self-reported stress levels and well-being between people who did not watch grazing sheep (no sheepmower group) compared with those who did watch grazing sheep (sheepmower group)? (2) Does holding sheep grazing events create opportunities for education about well-being and engagement with the campus community? (3) Can this type of urban grazing installation ultimately contribute to the overall identity of a college campus? Web-based questionnaire results indicate there is no significant difference in self-reported stress levels between the two groups; however, the moment-in-time smartphone-based single item question suggests that the presence of sheep provides temporary, noticeable relief and enhanced mood for those who observe the animals. Reflections posted on social media suggested that participants found the sheep grazing events fostered feelings of community and placemaking within the campus identity. However, the questionnaire sample indicated the grazing events did not have a significant effect on participants’ sense of place or overall campus identity. This transdisciplinary effort breaks down traditionally siloed approaches to human and environmental health and is an example of a whole-systems approach to developing innovative solutions and encouraging applied collective action.

Abstract

Samples of the carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu were brought to Earth by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. We analyzed 17 Ryugu samples measuring 1 to 8 millimeters. Carbon dioxide–bearing water inclusions are present within a pyrrhotite crystal, indicating that Ryugu’s parent asteroid formed in the outer Solar System. The samples contain low abundances of materials that formed at high temperatures, such as chondrules and calcium- and aluminum-rich inclusions. Abstract

We propose a new scheme for producing medical 15O isotopes using a water target, for blood flow examination with Positron Emission Tomography. The 15O radioisotopes are produced via the 16O(γ,n)15O reaction in a water target. A simulation study has been carried out to determine the productivity of radioactive [15O]-water using bremsstrahlung γ–rays by a 40 MeV electron beam of 100 μA. The productivity of [15O]-water with an activity of 6.9 GBq was confirmed by a 10-min radiation exposure. Produced [15O]-water is easily and rapidly sent from the production site to a patient site through a transport tube.

Abstract

ObjectiveSevere acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 uses angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 as a primary receptor for invasion. This study investigated angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 expression in the sinonasal mucosa of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis, as this could be linked to a susceptibility to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 infection.MethodsEthmoid sinus specimens were obtained from 27 patients with eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis, 18 with non-eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis and 18 controls. The angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 and other inflammatory cytokine and chemokine messenger RNA levels were assessed by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 positive cells were examined immunohistologically.ResultsThe eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis patients showed a significant decrease in angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 messenger RNA expression. In the chronic rhinosinusitis patients, angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 messenger RNA levels were positively correlated with tumour necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β (r = 0.4971 and r = 0.3082, respectively), and negatively correlated with eotaxin-3 (r = −0.2938). Angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 immunoreactivity was mainly localised in the ciliated epithelial cells.ConclusionEosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis patients with type 2 inflammation showed decreased angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 expression in their sinus mucosa. Angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 regulation was positively related to pro-inflammatory cytokines, especially tumour necrosis factor-α production, in chronic rhinosinusitis patients.

Abstract

Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a haematopoietic tumour of histiocyte origin that has been sporadically reported in four-toed hedgehogs (Atelerix albiventris). The present study aimed to investigate clinical, gross, histopathological and immunohistochemical features of HS in eight hedgehogs. Histological and immunohistochemical features of normal histiocytes and Langerhans cells (LCs) of hedgehogs were also investigated. HLA-DR-, Iba-1- and E-cadherin-positive LCs were observed in the epidermis, while Iba-1- and CD204-positive histiocytes were detected in the lymph nodes and spleen of normal hedgehogs. Localized HS (six cases) developed in the skin and spleen, while disseminated HS (two cases) occurred in the intestine. Tumour cells of disseminated HS were also distributed within the mesenteric lymph nodes, liver, kidney, spleen, lung and adrenal glands. Tumour cells of both localized and disseminated HS were composed of histiocytic cells, spindle to pleomorphic cells, multinucleated giant cells and erythrophagocytic cells. Most tumour cells were immunopositive for Iba-1, CD204 and lysozyme. A small number of tumour cells were positive for E-cadherin and CD208, and the tumour cells in one case were positive for HLA-DR. These results suggest that the tumour cells have variable features of histiocyte origin, including dendritic cells, LCs and macrophages. The behaviour of HS in the hedgehog was very aggressive, and 50% of cases died within 90 days of resection. The present study also highlighted the tendency for local tumour recurrence in localized cutaneous HS cases, suggesting a requirement for a long-term follow-up after excision.

Abstract

The status of a project to measure spin-isospin responses of neutron drip-line nuclei using a new low-energy neutron detector, PANDORA (Particle Analyzer Neutron Detector Of Real-time Acquisition), is reported. The performance of PANDORA was characterized by the 6He(p,n)6Li reaction in inverse kinematics at the HIMAC facility in Chiba. Observation of the strong transition to the ground state in 6Li is discussed. Preliminary results of 11Li(p,n)11Be and 14Be(p,n)14B experiments in inverse kinematics at RI Beam Factory (RIBF) of RIKEN Nishina Center are also presented including the exotic decay channel of 11Be→9Li + d. Details of the experimental setup based on PANDORA and the SAMURAI large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer, as well as the combined data-acquisition system are described. The neutron-gamma discrimination capability of PANDORA was evaluated, Figure-of-Merit (FoM) values higher than those found in the literature for similar materials were derived from experimental data.

Abstract

International audience; This work describes a silicon tracker system developed for experiments with proton-rich radioactive ion beams at the SAMURAI superconducting spectrometer of RIBF at RIKEN. The system is designed for accurate angular reconstruction and atomic number identification of relativistic heavy ions and protons which are simultaneously produced in reactions motivated by studies of proton capture reactions of interest for nuclear astrophysics. The technical characteristics of the tracking array are described in detail as are its performance in two pilot experiments. The physics justification for such a system is also presented.

Abstract

C-type asteroids are considered to be primitive small Solar-System bodies enriched in water and organics, providing clues for understanding the origin and evolution of the Solar System and the building blocks of life. C-type asteroid 162173 Ryugu has been characterized by remote sensing and on-asteroid measurements with Hayabusa2, but further studies are expected by direct analyses of returned samples. Here we describe the bulk sample mainly consisting of rugged and smooth particles of millimeter to submillimeter size, preserving physical and chemical properties as they were on the asteroid. The particle size distribution is found steeper than that of surface boulders11. Estimated grain densities of the samples have a peak around 1350 kg m-3, which is lower than that of meteorites suggests a high micro-porosity down to millimeter-scale, as estimated at centimeter-scale by thermal measurements. The extremely dark optical to near-infrared reflectance and the spectral profile with weak absorptions at 2.7 and 3.4 microns implying carbonaceous composition with indigenous aqueous alteration, respectively, match the global average of Ryugu, confirming the sample’s representativeness. Together with the absence of chondrule and Ca-Al-rich inclusion of larger than sub-mm, these features indicate Ryugu is most similar to CI chondrites but with darker, more porous and fragile characteristics.

Abstract

Background Sarcopenia is characterized by loss of skeletal muscle and strength, associated with aging, poor nutrition, sedentary lifestyle, and long-term illness. We sought to evaluate the current evidence on the prevalence of sarcopenia assessed by computed tomography (CT) imaging in patients undergoing lung cancer resection and its predictive value for perioperative and long-term outcomes. Methods We performed a systematic literature search of the PubMed/MEDLINE database to identify studies that examined CT-assessed muscle mass and outcomes of patients undergoing lung resection. Pooled odds ratio for complications and hazard ratio for survival with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were generated using the Mantel-Haenszel or inverse variance methods with random effects models. Results Nine observational studies met the inclusion criteria. Four studies measured skeletal muscle at the thoracic level (T5, T12, T8) and 5 studies at the lumbar level (L3). The prevalence of sarcopenia by CT skeletal muscle measurements ranged from 22.4% to 55.8%, with an average of 42.8% in 1010 patients. Four of 6 studies that reported perioperative outcomes were included in the meta-analysis, which showed higher risk of perioperative complications for patients with sarcopenia (odds ratio 2.51, 95% CI: 1.55-4.08, P Conclusions Sarcopenia can be frequently detected in patients undergoing lung cancer resection with the use of CT-based muscle measurements. Sarcopenia was associated with greater risk of perioperative complications and worse long-term prognosis.

Abstract

Introduction: Many reports show that denture adhesives improve the retention and stability of dentures. However, few randomized controlled trials have examined the effects of denture adhesives. Objective: This 10-center randomized controlled trial with parallel groups involving 200 edentulous patients wearing complete dentures aimed to evaluate the effects of short-term use of cream and powder denture adhesives. Methods: Patients were allocated into 2 cream- and powder-type adhesive groups and 1 control group. Intervention groups were treated with the 2 adhesives (1 each), and the control group received saline solution. Adhesive or control was applied to the denture-mucosal surface for 4 d, and data at baseline and after day 4 of intervention (i.e., 8 meals) were obtained. Patient satisfaction was evaluated with a 100-mm visual analog scale. Oral health–related quality of life was measured with the Japanese version of the Oral Health Impact Profile for Edentulous Patients. Perceived chewing ability was evaluated by a questionnaire regarding ease of chewing and swallowing food. Between-group comparisons were performed with Kruskal-Wallis tests with the Mann-Whitney U test adjusted by Bonferroni correction. Within-group comparisons of pre- and postintervention measurements were performed with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Intention-to-treat analysis was also performed. Results: Between-group comparisons showed no significant differences for general satisfaction or Oral Health Impact Profile for Edentulous Patients. However, significant differences in satisfaction with various denture functions with cream- and powder-type adhesives were seen in pre- and postintervention comparisons ( P < 0.05). Significant differences were also observed for perceived chewing ability of hard foods ( P < 0.05). Conclusion: These results suggest that although denture adhesives do not invariably improve denture function, they do affect subjective evaluations and possibly chewing of hard foods. Therefore, the effects of denture adhesive use are insufficient to resolve any fundamental dissatisfaction with dentures ( ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01712802 ). Knowledge Transfer Statement: The results of this study suggest that denture adhesives should be applied under certain conditions; however, an appropriate diagnosis is important before application. These practice-based data provide information to establish evidence-based guidelines for applying denture adhesives.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer amongst women in India. The aim of the study is to determine the feasibility of using GynocularT2D (G2TD) in conjunction with Visual Inspection with Acetic acid (VIA) in community based cervical cancer screening programs in rural Mysore, India. SETTING: Between November 2015 and August 2016, the Public Health Research Institute of India (PHRII) implemented a mobile cervical cancer-screening in Mysore district using VIA and GT2D. METHODS: Women underwent speculum exams and VIA positive cases were identified. Swede score was assessed using GT2D and a score >4 indicate further monitoring or referral for treatment. Papanicolaou (Pap) smears were conducted for selected cases. Statistical analysis was performed using chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests. RESULTS: Among 199 women registered in the camp 176 were included in the final analysis. 23 women were excluded due to vaginal bleeding. The average age of women was 39 years. Among the 176 cases, 38 (21.6%) were VIA positive and 138 (78.4%) were VIA negative. Swede score of >4 was observed in 6 VIA positive and 7 VIA negative women. Two cases among VIA negative with score of >4 were suggested biopsy. CONCLUSION: Gynocular triaging prevented overtreatment of 32 (18.1%) participants, and identified 7 subjects with >4 Swede score even in VIA negative cases, which would have been ignored if VIA alone was used. In summary, our study demonstrates that Gynocular triaging is feasible in community cervical cancer screening programs.

Abstract

Patient-reported outcomes (PRO) after lung cancer surgery are of increasing interest to patients and clinicians. A variety of studies have investigated the impact of the surgical approach on quality of life (QOL) after surgery for early non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Our aim is to review the current evidence on how minimally-invasive approaches, including video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and robotic-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (RATS), versus open thoracotomy for lung cancer affect QOL. We conducted a systematic review of the literature of studies comparing QOL after VATS/RATS versus thoracotomy approach using studies published before 2019 on PubMed and Google Scholar. Studies were assessed for differences in QOL by domains. Fifteen studies met our inclusion criteria including 14 observational studies and one randomized trial. Survey instruments and timing of QOL assessments differed between all studies. A thoracoscopic (VATS or RATS) approach was associated with better general health (3/10 studies), physical functioning (9/14 studies), social functioning (1/12 studies), mental health (3/13 studies), emotional role functioning (4/12 studies), physical role functioning (7/12 studies), and bodily pain (7/12 studies) as compared to open surgery. The open thoracotomy approach was associated with better general health and mental health in one study each. Although QOL assessment in current studies is highly variable, the existing evidence suggests that a thoracoscopic approach is associated with improved QOL, particularly in the areas of physical functioning and pain as compared to open lung cancer surgery.

Abstract

Background It is uncertain whether curative surgical treatment or a less radical surgery with adjuvant treatment should be provided to preserve function in patients with vulvar squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) that is adjacent to the urethra, anus, and vagina. The aim of this study was to investigate the surgical margin in patients with vulvar SCC with regard to local recurrence and overall survival. Methods Thirty-four patients were identified as having a diagnosis of vulvar SCC without distant metastasis. They had been treated surgically with curative intent at the Cancer Institute Hospital between May 1992 and January 2019. Clinical data were analyzed retrospectively. Results Rates of 5-year local recurrence-free survival among patients with positive, Conclusion To improve the prognosis, thorough resection with an adequate surgical margin is needed.

Abstract

In this study, optical properties and nuclear protective efficiency of newly fabricated PbO–GeO2 glass samples (GP) fabricated with different concentration of TiO2 (0.2%, 0.5%, and 4%, in wt%) were investigated. PbO–GeO2 glass samples have been prepared by the conventional melt-quenching method. Using optical absorption spectra, band gap and optical properties of the PbO–GeO2 glass samples were evaluated. In addition, mass attenuation coefficient values of the fabricated glass samples were calculated in the energy range of 0.015–15 MeV using MCNPX simulation and the theoretical WinXcom program. In addition, several nuclear shielding parameters were calculated for gamma ray and neutrons such as half-value layer, mean free path, effective atomic number (Zeff), exposure buildup factor, energy absorption buildup factor, and fast neutron removal cross sections (ΣR). The results showed that glass sample with 0.2% of TiO2 and with the highest density has an excellent nuclear radiation shielding ability for gamma ray, whereas the one with the highest TiO2 contribution (4.0% of TiO2) has a better protection against fast neutrons shielding among the produced glass samples. The results also showed a slight change for the Eopt with TiO2 concentration and the same applies to the refractive index. However, Eopt tends to decrease when TiO2 concentration increases and, consequently, the refractive index tends to increase.

Abstract

Theories beyond the standard model often predict the existence of an additional neutral boson, the Z′. Using data collected by the Belle II experiment during 2018 at the SuperKEKB collider, we perform the first searches for the invisible decay of a Z′ in the process e+e-→μ+μ-Z′ and of a lepton-flavor-violating Z′ in e+e-→e±μZ′. We do not find any excess of events and set 90% credibility level upper limits on the cross sections of these processes. We translate the former, in the framework of an Lμ-Lτ theory, into upper limits on the Z′ coupling constant at the level of 5×10-2-1 for MZ′≤6 GeV/c2.

Abstract

International audience; In the Belle II experiment, an aerogel-based proximity focusing ring-imaging Cherenkov (ARICH) counter is used for charged particle identification (PID) in the forward end-cap region. The goal is to separate kaons from pions at above 4σ significance level for momenta up to 4 GeV/c, which is critical for the measurements of rare B decays and CP violation in B decays. Chrerenkov photons are emitted in aerogel tiles and 144-channel Hybrid Avalanche Photo Detector (HAPDs) are used as the photo-detectors. We utilize a two-layer aerogel design with different refractive indexes in a focusing configuration. In Phase 3 of the Belle II operation (from Apr. 2019), the ARICH system has been operating smoothly. The performance of particle identification with ARICH has been well validated and is in agreement with simulation.

Abstract

Spectroscopic factors of neutron-hole and proton-hole states in 131Sn and 131In, respectively, were measured using one-nucleon removal reactions from doubly magic 132Sn at relativistic energies. For 131In, a 2910(50)-keV γ ray was observed for the first time and tentatively assigned to a decay from a 5=2− state at 3275(50) keV to the known 1=2− level at 365 keV. The spectroscopic factors determined for this new excited state and three other single-hole states provide first evidence for a strong fragmentation of singlehole strength in 131Sn and 131In. The experimental results are compared to theoretical calculations based on the relativistic particle-vibration coupling
