Abstract

The first search for the lepton number violating decay K+→π0π−μ+e+ and lepton flavour violating decays K+→π0π+μ−e+, K+→π0π+μ+e− has been performed using a dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2016–2018. Upper limits of 2.9×10−10, 3.1×10−10 and 5.0×10−10, respectively, are obtained at 90% CL for the branching ratios of the three decays on the assumption of uniform phase-space distributions.

Abstract

Abstract Measurement of the ultra-rare K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ {K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ decay at the NA62 experiment at CERN requires high-performance particle identification to distinguish muons from pions. Calorimetric identification currently in use, based on a boosted decision tree algorithm, achieves a muon misidentification probability of 1.2 × 10 −5 for a pion identification efficiency of 75% in the momentum range of 15–40 GeV/c. In this work, calorimetric identification performance is improved by developing an algorithm based on a convolutional neural network classifier augmented by a filter. Muon misidentification probability is reduced by a factor of six with respect to the current value for a fixed pion-identification efficiency of 75%. Alternatively, pion identification efficiency is improved from 72% to 91% for a fixed muon misidentification probability of 10 −5.

Abstract

Abstract A sample of 1.3 × 105 K + → π 0 e + νγ candidates with less than 1% background was collected by the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS in 2017–2018. Branching fraction measurements are obtained at percent relative precision in three restricted kinematic regions, improving on existing results by a factor larger than two. An asymmetry, possibly related to T-violation, is investigated with no evidence observed within the achieved precision.

Abstract

Abstract The NA62 experiment at CERN, designed to study the ultra-rare decay K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ \nu \overline{\nu} $$ , has also collected data in beam-dump mode. In this configuration, dark photons may be produced by protons dumped on an absorber and reach a decay volume beginning 80 m downstream. A search for dark photons decaying in flight to μ + μ − pairs is reported, based on a sample of 1.4 × 1017 protons on dump collected in 2021. No evidence for a dark photon signal is observed. A region of the parameter space is excluded at 90% CL, improving on previous experimental limits for dark photon masses between 215 and 550 MeV/c 2.

Abstract

A sample of 3984 candidates of the K+→π+γγ decay, with an estimated background of 291±14 events, was collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN during 2017–2018. In order to describe the observed di-photon mass spectrum, the next-to-leading order contribution in chiral perturbation theory was found to be necessary. The decay branching ratio in the full kinematic range is measured to be (9.61±0.17)×10−7. The first search for production and prompt decay of an axion-like particle with gluon coupling in the process K+→π+a, a→γγ is also reported.

Abstract The NA62 experiment at CERN targets the measurement of the ultra-rare K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ {K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ decay, and carries out a broad physics programme that includes probes for symmetry violations and searches for exotic particles. Data were collected in 2016–2018 using a multi-level trigger system, which is described highlighting performance studies based on 2018 data.

Abstract

The first search for ultra-rare K+ decays into the π+e+e−e+e− final state is reported, using a dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2017–2018. An upper limit of 1.4×10−8 at 90% CL is obtained for the branching ratio of the K+→π+e+e−e+e− decay, predicted in the Standard Model to be (7.2±0.7)×10−11. Upper limits at 90% CL are obtained at the level of 10−9 for the branching ratios of two prompt decay chains involving pair-production of hidden-sector mediators: K+→π+aa, a→e+e− and K+→π+S, S→A′A′, A′→e+e−.

Abstract

Summary: Background: COVID-19 in paediatric ages could result in hospitalizations and death. In addition, excluding children from vaccination could turn them into reservoirs of the SARS-COV-2. Safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines are urgently needed for large-scale paediatric vaccination. ISMAELILLO study aimed to evaluate safety and immunogenicity of two strengths of a new recombinant receptor-binding domain (RBD) protein vaccine (Abdala) in paediatric population. Methods: A double-blinded, multicentre, randomised, phase 1/2 clinical trial was conducted in nine polyclinics in the province of Camagüey, Cuba. Healthy children and adolescents were stratified according to age (3–11 years old, or 12–18 years old) and they were randomly assigned (1:1; block size four) in two dosage level groups of vaccine to receive three intramuscular doses of 25 μg or 50 μg of RBD, 14 days apart. Main safety endpoint was analyzed as the percentage of serious adverse reactions during vaccination up to 28 days after the third dose (Day 56) in participants who received at least one dose vaccination. The primary immunogenicity endpoint assessed was seroconversion rate of anti-RBD IgG antibody at day 56. The immunogenicity outcomes were assessed in the per-protocol population. This trial is registered with Cuban Public Registry of Clinical Trials, RPCEC00000381. Findings: Between July 15, 2021, and August 16, 2021, 644 paediatric subjects were screened, of whom 592 were enrolled after verifying that they met the selection criteria: firstly 88 were included in Phase 1 of the study and 504 who completed Phase 2. The vaccine was well tolerated. Injection site pain was the most frequently reported local event (143 [8·4%] of 1707 total doses applied), taking place in 66/851 (7·8%) in the 25 μg group and in 77/856 (9·0%) in the 50 μg. The most common systemic adverse event (AE) was headache: 23/851 (2·7%) in the 25 μg group and 19/856 (2·2%) in the 50 μg. Reactogenicity was mild or moderate in severity, represented in 75% of cases by local symptoms, completely resolved in the first 24–48 h. Twenty-eight days after the third dose, seroconversion anti-RBD IgG were observed in 98·2% of the children and adolescents (231/234) for the 50 μg group and 98·7% (224/228) for the 25 μg group without differences between both strength. The specific IgG antibody geometric mean titres (GMT) showed higher titres between participants who received Abdala 50 μg (231·3; 95% CI 222·6–240·4) compared to those who received 25 μg (126·7; 95% CI 121·9–131·7). Abstract

Abstract A sample of 2.8 × 104 K + → π + μ + μ − candidates with negligible background was collected by the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS in 2017–2018. The model-independent branching fraction is measured to be (9.15 ± 0.08) × 10 −8, a factor three more precise than previous measurements. The decay form factor is presented as a function of the squared dimuon mass. A measurement of the form factor parameters and their uncertainties is performed using a description based on Chiral Perturbation Theory at O $$ \mathcal{O} $$ (p 6).

Abstract

A search for the K+→μ−νe+e+ decay, forbidden within the Standard Model by either lepton number or lepton flavour conservation depending on the flavour of the emitted neutrino, has been performed using the dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2016–2018. An upper limit of 8.1×10−11 is obtained for the decay branching fraction at 90% CL, improving by a factor of 250 over the previous search.

Abstract The NA62 experiment reports the branching ratio measurement BR K + → π + ν ν ¯ = 10.6 − 3.4 + 4.0 stat ± 0.9 syst × 10 − 11 $$ \mathrm{BR}\left({K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu}\right)=\left({10.6}_{-3.4}^{+4.0}\left|{}_{\mathrm{stat}}\right.\pm {0.9}_{\mathrm{syst}}\right)\times {10}^{-11} $$ at 68% CL, based on the observation of 20 signal candidates with an expected background of 7.0 events from the total data sample collected at the CERN SPS during 2016–2018. This provides evidence for the very rare K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ decay, observed with a significance of 3.4σ. The experiment achieves a single event sensitivity of (0.839 ± 0.054) × 10 −11, corresponding to 10.0 events assuming the Standard Model branching ratio of (8.4 ± 1.0) × 10 −11. This measurement is also used to set limits on BR(K + → π + X), where X is a scalar or pseudo-scalar particle. Details are given of the analysis of the 2018 data sample, which corresponds to about 80% of the total data sample.

Abstract

Abstract A search for the K + → π + X decay, where X is a long-lived feebly interacting particle, is performed through an interpretation of the K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ analysis of data collected in 2017 by the NA62 experiment at CERN. Two ranges of X masses, 0–110 MeV/c 2 and 154–260 MeV/c 2, and lifetimes above 100 ps are considered. The limits set on the branching ratio, BR(K + → π + X), are competitive with previously reported searches in the first mass range, and improve on current limits in the second mass range by more than an order of magnitude.

Abstract

Searches for lepton number violating K+→π−e+e+ and K+→π−π0e+e+ decays have been performed using the complete dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2016–2018. Upper limits of 5.3×10−11 and 8.5×10−10 are obtained on the decay branching fractions at 90% confidence level. The former result improves by a factor of four over the previous best limit, while the latter result represents the first limit on the K+→π−π0e+e+ decay rate.

Abstract

Abstract The NA62 experiment reports an investigation of the K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ {K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ mode from a sample of K + decays collected in 2017 at the CERN SPS. The experiment has achieved a single event sensitivity of (0.389 ± 0.024) × 10 −10, corresponding to 2.2 events assuming the Standard Model branching ratio of (8.4 ± 1.0) × 10 −11. Two signal candidates are observed with an expected background of 1.5 events. Combined with the result of a similar analysis conducted by NA62 on a smaller data set recorded in 2016, the collaboration now reports an upper limit of 1.78 × 10 −10 for the K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ {K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ branching ratio at 90% CL. This, together with the corresponding 68% CL measurement of ( 0.48 − 0.48 + 0.72 $$ {0.48}_{-0.48}^{+0.72} $$ ) × 10 −10, are currently the most precise results worldwide, and are able to constrain some New Physics models that predict large enhancements still allowed by previous measurements.

Abstract

Abstract The results of a search for π 0 decays to a photon and an invisible massive dark photon at the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS are reported. From a total of 4.12 × 108 tagged π 0 mesons, no signal is observed. Assuming a kinetic-mixing interaction, limits are set on the dark photon coupling to the ordinary photon as a function of the dark photon mass, improving on previous searches in the mass range 60–110 MeV/c 2. The present results are interpreted in terms of an upper limit of the branching ratio of the electro-weak decay π 0 → γ ν ν ¯ $$ {\pi}^0\to \gamma \nu \overline{\nu} $$ , improving the current limit by more than three orders of magnitude.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS reports the first search for K+→π+νν¯ using the decay-in-flight technique, based on a sample of 1.21×1011 K+ decays collected in 2016. The single event sensitivity is 3.15×10−10, corresponding to 0.267 Standard Model events. One signal candidate is observed while the expected background is 0.152 events. This leads to an upper limit of 14×10−10 on the K+→π+νν¯ branching ratio at 95% CL.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at CERN reports searches for K+→μ+N and K+→μ+νX decays, where N and X are massive invisible particles, using the 2016–2018 data set. The N particle is assumed to be a heavy neutral lepton, and the results are expressed as upper limits of O(10−8) of the neutrino mixing parameter |Uμ4|2 for N masses in the range 200–384 MeV/c2 and lifetime exceeding 50 ns. The X particle is considered a scalar or vector hidden sector mediator decaying to an invisible final state, and upper limits of the decay branching fraction for X masses in the range 10–370 MeV/c2 are reported for the first time, ranging from O(10−5) to O(10−7). An improved upper limit of 1.0×10−6 is established at 90% CL on the K+→μ+ννν¯ branching fraction.

Abstract

A search for heavy neutral lepton (N) production in K+→e+N decays using the data sample collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2017–2018 is reported. Upper limits of the extended neutrino mixing matrix element |Ue4|2 are established at the level of 10−9 over most of the accessible heavy neutral lepton mass range 144–462 MeV/c2, with the assumption that the lifetime exceeds 50 ns. These limits improve significantly upon those of previous production and decay searches. The |Ue4|2 range favoured by Big Bang Nucleosynthesis is excluded up to a mass of about 340 MeV/c2.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at CERN reports a search for the lepton number violating decays K+→π−e+e+ and K+→π−μ+μ+ using a data sample collected in 2017. No signals are observed, and upper limits on the branching fractions of these decays of 2.2×10−10 and 4.2×10−11 are obtained, respectively, at 90% confidence level. These upper limits improve on previously reported measurements by factors of 3 and 2, respectively.

Abstract

The TDCpix pixel read-out ASIC contains 1800 pixels arranged in 40 columns and 45 rows with the dimension of 300μm x 300μm. Each pixel contains a preamplifier and shaper circuit with a dynamic range of 0.8 to 10 fC and a rise time of 5 ns, followed by a Leading-Edge discriminator with Time-over-Threshold correction. The discriminator outputs of each pixel are connected to time-to-digital converters (TDC) measuring the time when the input signal has exceeded the threshold and the pulse width with a binning of 97 ps. The electronics noise of pre-amplifier/shaper is 170 e− or 2.7 mV rms with a gain of 65 mV/fC. The jitter of the entire processing chain for an electrical input signal of 2.4 fC is lower than 60 ps rms. The ASIC has been designed to work in radiated environments of 6 * 104 Gray per year and 2 x 1014 1 MeV neutron equivalent cm−2.

Abstract

Heterosis is defined as increased performance of the F1 hybrid relative to its parents. In the current study, a cohort of populations and parents were created to evaluate and understand heterosis across generations (i.e., F1 to F3) in lentil, a self-pollinated annual diploid (2n = 2× = 14) crop species. Lentil plants were evaluated for heterotic traits in terms of plant height, biomass fresh weight, seed number, yield per plant and 100 grain weight. A total of 47 selected lentil genotypes were cross hybridized to generate 72 F1 hybrids. The F1 hybrids from the top five crosses exhibited between 31%–62% heterosis for seed number with reference to the better parent. The five best performing heterotic crosses were selected with a negative control for evaluation at the subsequent F2 generation and only the tails of the distribution taken forward to be assessed in the F3 generation as a sub selection. Overall, heterosis decreases across the subsequent generations for all traits studied. However, some individual genotypes were identified at the F2 and sub-selected F3 generations with higher levels of heterosis than the best F1 mean value (hybrid mimics). The phenotypic data for the selected F2 and sub selected F3 hybrids were analysed, and the study suggested that 100 grain weight was the biggest driver of yield followed by seed number. A genetic diversity analysis of all the F1 parents failed to correlate genetic distance and divergence among parents with heterotic F1’s. Therefore, genetic distance was not a key factor to determine heterosis in lentil. The study highlights the challenges associated with different breeding systems for heterosis (i.e., F1 hybrid-based breeding systems and/or via hybrid mimics) but demonstrates the potential significant gains that could be achieved in lentil productivity.

Abstract

In marine ecosystems, most physiological, ecological, or physical processes are size dependent. These include metabolic rates, the uptake of carbon and other nutrients, swimming and sinking velocities, and trophic interactions, which eventually determine the stocks of commercial species, as well as biogeochemical cycles and carbon sequestration. As such, broad-scale observations of plankton size distribution are important indicators of the general functioning and state of pelagic ecosystems under anthropogenic pressures. Here, we present the first global datasets of the Pelagic Size Structure database (PSSdb), generated from plankton imaging devices. This release includes the bulk particle normalized biovolume size spectrum (NBSS) and the bulk particle size distribution (PSD), along with their related parameters (slope, intercept, and R2) measured within the epipelagic layer (0–200 m) by three imaging sensors: the Imaging FlowCytobot (IFCB), the Underwater Vision Profiler (UVP), and benchtop scanners. Collectively, these instruments effectively image organisms and detrital material in the 7–10 000 µm size range. A total of 92 472 IFCB samples, 3068 UVP profiles, and 2411 scans passed our quality control and were standardized to produce consistent instrument-specific size spectra averaged to 1° × 1° latitude and longitude and by year and month. Our instrument-specific datasets span most major ocean basins, except for the IFCB datasets we have ingested, which were exclusively collected in northern latitudes, and cover decadal time periods (2013–2022 for IFCB, 2008–2021 for UVP, and 1996–2022 for scanners), allowing for a further assessment of the pelagic size spectrum in space and time. Abstract

Journal of Instrumentation 17(05), P05022 (2022). doi:10.1088/1748-0221/17/05/P05022, The Compact Muon Solenoid collaboration is designing a new high-granularity endcap calorimeter, HGCAL, to be installed later this decade. As part of this development work, a prototype system was built, with an electromagnetic section consisting of 14 double-sided structures, providing 28 sampling layers. Each sampling layer has an hexagonal module, where a multipad large-area silicon sensor is glued between an electronics circuit board and a metal baseplate. The sensor pads of approximately 1.1 cm$^{2}$ are wire-bonded to the circuit board and are readout by custom integrated circuits. The prototype was extensively tested with beams at CERN's Super Proton Synchrotron in 2018. Based on the data collected with beams of positrons, with energies ranging from 20 to 300 GeV, measurements of the energy resolution and linearity, the position and angular resolutions, and the shower shapes are presented and compared to a detailed Geant4 simulation., Published by Inst. of Physics, London

Abstract

The main objectives of the present study were to assess the water demand for heavy fruit load of ‘Hass’ avocado throughout the growth periods and to investigate the effects of deficit irrigation during sensitive phenological phases on yield. The experimental set-up allowed the comparison between trees responses to three irrigation strategies during the entire growth period (no water stress; excessive irrigation; constant water stress) as well as the comparison between regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) managements applied during the early or the late growth period. The yield of no water stress treatments during three experimental years was very high (25–31 t ha−1) while the yields of water-stressed trees were significantly lower (16–21 t ha−1). More importantly, the yield of no water stress trees was not susceptible to alternate bearing while the yield of water-stressed trees was considerably reduced during off-crop years. Irrigation rates and the actual evapotranspiration coefficient KL = ET/ET0 for the no water stress treatment may serve as a reasonable guide for irrigation management. Fruit load should be taken into account while planning irrigation and fertilization management and plant-based methods should be used for controlling the irrigation management (scheduling and quantities). Analyses of trunk diameter variation data that lead to evaluation of trunk growth rate and maximum daily shrinkage reflect phenological stages and periodicity of shoot, fruit and root growth, and also may provide an integrative, “holistic viewpoint” of overall tree status.

Abstract

An overview of the electronics readout/trigger architecture for the CMS HGCAL will be given. To respond to physics performance requirements, data rates, trigger-primitive generation and radiation tolerance has been extremely challenging. Each HGCAL endcap includes ∼300 m2of active silicon in 50 layers, with a largely inhomogenous layout with limited commonality between layers. An agile, python-based counting scheme was implemented that creates tables of component counts. These are subsequently incorporated in the architecture specifications document and costbook, providing critical input to the mechanical design and integration optimisation.

Abstract

The main objective of this study was to assess the seasonal nutrients requirement of ‘Hass’ avocado trees grown in lysimeters, especially during flowering and the early period of fruit development that may affect later on the fruitlet abscission and determine crop yield. The experimental design included three fertigation treatments applying a fixed nutrient solution at three different starting dates of fertigation: (a) T1 – continuous fertigation, including macro nutrients (N-P -K) and micronutrients application, all over the year; (b) T2 – no fertilization (only irrigation) until 15 March, and fertigation as T1 since then; (c) T3 - no fertilization (only irrigation) until 15 May, and fertigation as T1 since then. Absence of fertilization during the winter period induced leaf-chlorosis while healthy, dense and plenteously green leaves characterized the fertilized trees (T1). The beneficial effect of early fertigation on fruit yield was statistically significant, mostly because of higher fruit number. Leaf analyses are commonly used in the avocado industry as a guide for fertilization yet; fruits rather than leaves are the main products of avocado orchards. Consequently, fruit rather than leaf analyses should determine fertilization management. Based on fruit growth data and nutrient concentration in the fruit, the N, P and K quantities removed by ‘Hass’ avocado fruit yield of 30 t ha−1 were 120, 25 and 240 kg ha−1. Taking into account common efficiency consideration (nutrient quantities removed by fruit yield divided by quantities added), the annual quantities of N, P and K required for attaining high quality avocado yield are 250–300, 80–120 and 500–600 kg ha−1, respectively. Thus, fertilization rate together with nutrient combination should be modified in order to insure optimal fruit development.

Abstract

The objective of the current study was to examine the effect of different irrigation levels at different phenological stages on fruit yield, fruit size, vegetative growth, and subsequent season crop yield of mango trees growing in sub-tropical weather conditions. Three independent experiments were conducted in parallel in three phenological stages: main fruit growth (MFG)—from fruit set to pit hardening; final fruit growth (FFG)—from pit hardening up to harvest; and post-harvest (PH)—after harvest until the first meaningful rain. Each experiment was consisted of four irrigation levels that were determined as crop coefficients of Penman–Monteith evapotranspiration. Differential irrigation levels were applied in each phenological stage, where commercial irrigation levels were applied in the rest of the season. Crop yield in the MFG stage was unaffected by the irrigation treatments. The number of fruit in the MFG stage increased slightly with increasing water quantities. Average fruit size in the MFG stage decreased with increasing the number of fruit per tree, indicating that the number of fruit rather than irrigation regime is the main determinant of the final fruit size. The number of fruit per tree in the FFG stage was unaffected by the lowest irrigation treatment; however, the same treatment had the lowest fruit size, significant only in 2013. Post-harvest shoot growth in the FFG stage experiment increased with irrigation level (significant in 2013), indicating that water stress in the FFG stage had a carryover effect. The crop yield in the PH stage increased with increasing irrigation rate in the former season, significant in 2011 and 2013. The higher yields in the high irrigation treatments in the PH stage were associated with larger fruit size. The number of post-harvest vegetative flashes increased with increasing crop coefficient (K c) in the PH stage in the same season, except for the 2011. Crop yield in the PH stage increased with increasing number of post-harvest vegetative flashes in the former season. The results obtained in the current study indicate that the mango in Israel is sensitive to deficit irrigation in both the FFG in an “ON” season and in the PH stage towards an “ON” season.

Abstract

Journal of Instrumentation 16(04), T04001 (2021). doi:10.1088/1748-0221/16/04/T04001, The CMS experiment at the CERN LHC will be upgraded to accommodate the 5-fold increase in the instantaneous luminosity expected at the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) [1]. Concomitant with this increase will be an increase in the number of interactions in each bunch crossing and a significant increase in the total ionising dose and fluence. One part of this upgrade is the replacement of the current endcap calorimeters with a high granularity sampling calorimeter equipped with silicon sensors, designed to manage the high collision rates [2]. As part of the development of this calorimeter, a series of beam tests have been conducted with different sampling configurations using prototype segmented silicon detectors. In the most recent of these tests, conducted in late 2018 at the CERN SPS, the performance of a prototype calorimeter equipped with ���12,000 channels of silicon sensors was studied with beams of high-energy electrons, pions and muons. Abstract

Journal of Instrumentation 16(04), T04002 (2021). doi:10.1088/1748-0221/16/04/T04002, As part of its HL-LHC upgrade program, the CMS collaboration is developing a High Granularity Calorimeter (CE) to replace the existing endcap calorimeters. The CE is a sampling calorimeter with unprecedented transverse and longitudinal readout for both electromagnetic (CE-E) and hadronic (CE-H) compartments. The calorimeter will be built with ���30,000 hexagonal silicon modules. Prototype modules have been constructed with 6-inch hexagonal silicon sensors with cell areas of 1.1 cm2, and the SKIROC2-CMS readout ASIC. Beam tests of different sampling configurations were conducted with the prototype modules at DESY and CERN in 2017 and 2018. Abstract

The NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS is designed to conduct precision tests of the Standard Model by studying rare decays of charged kaons. NA62 took data in 2016-2018 and collected a large sample of charged kaon decays into final states with multiple charged particles. The sensitivity to a range of lepton flavour and lepton number violating kaon decays provided by this data set is improved over the previously reported measurements. Results from the searches of $K^+→ π^-l^+l^+$ decays with a partial NA62 data sample are presented.

Abstract

Among the meson decays, K → π ν ν ‾ are the cleanest environment, from the theoretical point of view, where to search for new physics effects. The NA62 Experiment at CERN SPS aims to measure the BR ( K + → π + ν ν ‾ ) with a 10% precision by the end of 2018. It has been commissioned with technical runs in 2014 and 2015, and some preliminary results of the detector performances and quality of data are here reported.

Abstract

The decay $K^{+} \rightarrow \pi^{+}\nu\overline{\nu}$ has a very precisely predicted branching ratio ($\sim 8\times 10^{-11}$) and it is one of the best candidates to reveal indirect effects of new physics. The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is designed to measure the branching ratio of the $K^{+} \rightarrow \pi^{+}\nu\overline{\nu}$ with a decay-in-flight technique, novel for this channel. NA62 has taken data firstly in 2016 with the aim to reach the SM sensitivity. It has then collected 10 times more statistics in 2017 and a similar amount of data is expected from the 2018 run. The preliminary result on the full 2016 data set and the prospects for future developments are presented here.

Abstract

The NA48/2 experiment at CERN collected a very large sample of charged kaon decays into multiple final states. These data allow measurements related to QCD. We obtained our final measurement of the charged kaon semileptonic decays form factors based on 4.28 million Ke3 and 2.91 million Kμ3 selected decays, with the smallest uncertainty for Ke3 and a competitive result for Kμ3 and leading to the most precise combined Kl3 result coming from the kaon sector that reduces the form factor uncertainty of/Vus/. The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is designed to measure the branching ratio of the K+ → π+νν decay with 10% precision. K → πνν is one of the theoretically cleanest meson decay where to look for indirect effects of new physics complementary to LHC searches. NA62 took data in 2015-2017; the analysis of a partial data set allows to reach the Standard Model sensitivity. The status of the experiments will be presented.

Abstract

International audience; The GigaTracker is a lightweight hybrid silicon pixel detector built for the NA62 experiment at CERN, which aims at measuring the branching fraction of the ultra-rare kaon decay $K^+\rightarrow \pi^+\nu\bar{\nu}$ at the CERN SPS. The detector tracks charged particles in a 75 GeV/$c$ hadron beam with a flux reaching 1.3 MHz/mm$^2$. It consists of three stations, 61$\times$27 mm$^2$ each, which provide single-hit timing with 130 ps resolution. Each station is composed of a 200 $\mu$m thick planar silicon sensor, segmented in 300$\times$300 $\mu$m$^2$ pixels, bump-bonded to 2$\times$5 custom 100 $\mu$m thick ASIC, called TDCPix. Each TDCPix contains 40$\times$45 asynchronous pixels, and is instrumented with 360 pairs of time-to-digital converter channels with 100 ps bin. The three stations are installed in vacuum (about 10$^{-6}$ mbar) and cooled with liquid $\mathrm{C_6F_{14}}$ circulating through micro-channels etched inside silicon plates a few hundred microns thick. The total material budget is less than 0.5% $X_0$ per station. Detector description, operational experience and performance from the NA62 experimental run in 2016, at about 30% the nominal beam intensity, will be presented.

Abstract

The physical performance characteristics of a prototype scanning digital mammography (DM) system have been investigated. The I-ImaS system utilises CMOS MAPS technology promoting on-chip data processing; consequently statistical analysis is therefore achievable in real-time for the purpose of exposure modulation via a feedback mechanism during the image acquisition procedure. The imager employs a dual array of twenty CMOS APS sensing devices each individually coupled to a 100 mum thick thallium doped structured CsI scintillator. The X-ray performance of the sensors was characterised where the presampled modulation transfer function (MTF), normalised noise power spectrum (NNPS), and the detective quantum efficiency (DQE) was determined. The presampled MTF was measured utilising the slit technique and was found to be 0.1 at 6 lp/mm. The NNPS measured utilising a W/Al target/filter combination hardened with 38 mm PMMA was seen to decrease with increasing exposure as expected and the manifesting DQE was 0.30 at close to zero spatial frequency at an exposure of 1.75 mR. Preliminary image stitching of the individual steps acquired from the scanning system is presented. A conventionally acquired image that is without the implementation of beam modulation or off-line intelligence is compared and contrasted to an intelligently off-line processed image. Results indicate the implementation of real-time intelligence into the image acquisition phase of digital mammography is foreseeable.

Abstract

I-ImaS (Intelligent Imaging Sensors) is a European project aiming to produce real-time adaptive X-ray imaging systems using Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) to create images with maximum diagnostic information within given dose constraints. Initial systems concentrate on mammography and cephalography.In our system, the exposure in each image region is optimised and the beam intensity is a function of tissue thickness and attenuation, and also of local physical and statistical parameters in the image. Using a linear array of detectors, the system will perform on-line analysis of the image during the scan, followed by optimisation of the X-ray intensity to obtain the maximum diagnostic information from the region of interest while minimising exposure of diagnostically less important regions.This paper presents preliminary images obtained with a small area CMOS detector developed for this application. Wedge systems were used to modulate the beam intensity during breast and dental imaging using suitable X-ray spectra. The sensitive imaging area of the sensor is 512 × 32 pixels 32 × 32 μm2 in size. The sensors' X-ray sensitivity was increased by coupling to a structured CsI(Tl) scintillator. In order to develop the I-ImaS prototype, the on-line data analysis and data acquisition control are based on custom-developed electronics using multiple FPGAs.Images of both breast tissues and jaw samples were acquired and different exposure optimisation algorithms applied. Results are very promising since the average dose has been reduced to around 60% of the dose delivered by conventional imaging systems without decrease in the visibility of details.Keywords: X-ray imaging; Intelligent imaging; CMOS; Mammography; Adaptive imaging

The $K^+\rightarrow \pi^+ \nu \bar \nu$ decay is one of the theoretically cleanest meson decay where to look for indirect effects of new physics complementary to LHC searches. The NA62 experiment at CERN is designed to measure the branching ratio (BR) of this decay with 10\% precision. NA62 has been successfully launched in October 2014, took data in pilot runs in 2014 and 2015 reaching the final designed beam intensity. The NA62 experimental setup is illustrated and quality of data acquired in view of the final measurement is reported. Abstract

The T2K experiment is a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment aiming to observe the appearance of νe in a νμ beam. The νμ beam is produced at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), observed with the 295 km distant Super-Kamiokande Detector and monitored by a suite of near detectors at 280 m from the proton target. The near detectors include a magnetized off-axis detector (ND280) which measures the unoscillated neutrino flux and neutrino cross-sections. The present paper describes the outermost component of ND280 which is a Side Muon Range Detector (SMRD) composed of scintillation counters with embedded wavelength shifting fibers and Multi-Pixel Photon Counter readout. The components, performance and response of the SMRD are presented. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.
