This work assessed highly effective bismuth borosilicate glasses' nuclear radiation shielding capabilities in terms of different concentrations of Bi2O3. Melt-quenching was the method used to create the glasses. The Phy-X/PSD program was used to compute the μm values. The bismuth borosilicate glasses' nuclear radiation shielding properties were determined in the 0.015–15 MeV energy range. Increasing Bi₂O₃ concentration resulted in an increase in mass attenuation coefficient, linear attenuation coefficient, and effective atomic number. Conversely, the half value layer and mean free path values decreased. The B48Bi17 sample, with its largest Zeff, is a great gamma attenuator. The results of a new study may help to clarify the nature of the Bi2O3 additive used in borosilicate glasses, which are a potential form of shield for use in industrial and medical radiation facilities.

Abstract The current study uses zinc oxide doping nanoparticles to investigate the radiation shielding properties of bismuth borate glass. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) examined the structural characteristics of the current samples. In contrast, the optical properties were determined based on the absorption spectrum for current samples. Appraisal studies are carried out depending on the simulation capabilities of Phy-X/PSD software in conjunction with MCNP5 to achieve this goal. In addition, the neutron and charged particle shielding properties were evaluated theoretically. All glasses are amorphous, as confirmed by the XRD data, and the FTIR data showed several vibration bands and functional groups. The density showed rising from 5.981 to 6.433 g/cm3 with adding ZnO. The band gap values reduced from 2.831 to 2.091 eV for direct and 3.024 to 2.218 eV for indirect with adding ZnO. The investigations' findings demonstrate a strong agreement between the theoretical and simulation-derived estimates of the mass attenuation coefficient. The relative difference of MAC results lie in the range 0.106–2.941% for BBZ0, 0.105–4.348% for BBZ1, 0.105–3.398% for BBZ2, and 0.105–2.032% for BBZ3. The study's findings are valuable insights from thoroughly examining these parameters, which can potentially improve the radiation protection abilities of Bi2O3–B2O3–ZnO glasses. This study represents a significant step in developing more efficient and safer materials for gamma radiation shielding applications.

We report an efficient sample preparation method (freezing) for onsite fat and meat analysis via a specially designed thermoelectric cooling and temperature-controlling system. This investigation also focused on the effect of phase change on the sensitivity and reproducibility of LIBS emission signals and plasma parameters. The plasma emissions of animal fats (lard) were recorded when the sample was frozen (−2 °C), fluid (15 °C), and in a liquid state (37 °C) with a thermoelectric cooling system. At each temperature, the plasma emissions were acquired at laser pulse energy from 50 to 300 mJ and detector gate delay (DGD) from 0.5 to 5 μs. With increasing sample temperature, the DGD, where the optical emission intensity reached a maximum, decreased. At a laser pulse energy of 200 mJ and a sample temperature of −2 °C, the emission signals increased fourfold, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) improved tenfold, and the self-absorption in the emission lines decreased significantly. The repeatability of the emission signals and plasma parameters of frozen and liquid fat samples was determined using the relative standard deviation (RSD) of Se I (473.08 nm) and K I (766.48 nm) emission lines. The RSDs of the emission signals improved from 40 to 18 % and 37 to 16 %, whereas the shot-to-shot RSDs of the electron temperature and electron number density get improved from 11 to 6 % and 12 to 6.8 %, respectively.

The ceramic and porcelain industry in the Arab Republic of Egypt annually produces a huge amount of by-product waste. Public health is threatened by the accumulated ceramic and porcelain dust and crumbs. In this study, five different ceramic and porcelain waste samples were recycled in glass form of xLiNbO3-(40-x)Waste and investigated with different LiNbO3 contents of x = 8, 16, 20, 24, 32 wt.% for useful nuclear radiation shielding applications. The amorphous structure of prepared samples is assured with XRD analyses. The radiation protection features of the prepared samples were investigated experimentally and compared with theoretical calculations for photon energies in the range of 81–2614 KeV. Moreover, optical parameters of waste glasses such as absorption coefficient, skin depth, and extinction coefficient have been calculated. The radiation protection factors showed that the Waste32 sample with 32 wt.% LiNbO3 is the best shield out of the fabricated Waste-x samples. The insertion of ceramic and porcelain wastes in the glass system reached 32 wt.%.

Abstract Background Surveillance data are essential for malaria control, but quality is often poor. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the novel combination of training plus an innovative quality improvement method—collaborative improvement (CI)—on the quality of malaria surveillance data in Uganda. Methods The intervention (training plus CI, or TCI), including brief in-service training and CI, was delivered in 5 health facilities (HFs) in Kayunga District from November 2015 to August 2016. HF teams monitored data quality, conducted plan-do-study-act cycles to test changes, attended periodic learning sessions, and received CI coaching. An independent evaluation was conducted to assess data completeness, accuracy, and timeliness. Using an interrupted time series design without a separate control group, data were abstracted from 156,707 outpatient department (OPD) records, laboratory registers, and aggregated monthly reports (MR) for 4 time periods: baseline—12 months, TCI scale-up—5 months; CI implementation—9 months; post-intervention—4 months. Monthly OPD register completeness was measured as the proportion of patient records with a malaria diagnosis with: (1) all data fields completed, and (2) all clinically-relevant fields completed. Accuracy was the relative difference between: (1) number of monthly malaria patients reported in OPD register versus MR, and (2) proportion of positive malaria tests reported in the laboratory register versus MR. Data were analysed with segmented linear regression modelling. Results Data completeness increased substantially following TCI. Compared to baseline, all-field completeness increased by 60.1%-points (95% confidence interval [CI]: 46.9–73.2%) at mid-point, and clinically-relevant completeness increased by 61.6%-points (95% CI: 56.6–66.7%). A relative − 57.4%-point (95% confidence interval: − 105.5, − 9.3%) change, indicating an improvement in accuracy of malaria test positivity reporting, but no effect on data accuracy for monthly malaria patients, were observed. Cost per additional malaria patient, for whom complete clinically-relevant data were recorded in the OPD register, was $3.53 (95% confidence interval: $3.03, $4.15). Conclusions TCI improved malaria surveillance completeness considerably, with limited impact on accuracy. Although these results are promising, the intervention’s effectiveness should be evaluated in more HFs, with longer follow-up, ideally in a randomized trial, before recommending CI for wide-scale use.

Reinforced thermoplastic composites offer considerable advantages in structural and industrial applications in terms of high specific strength, excellent corrosion resistance, high impact toughness, high specific stiffness, recyclability, cost effectiveness, and design flexibility. Glass fibers (GFs) are the reinforcement material used in polypropylene (PP) composites to enhance PP properties with reasonable cost. To obtain better mechanical properties and decrease the overall cost, recycled rubber powder was used as a low-cost additive to PP/GF composites. The PP and GF, with different weight fractions, were mixed mechanically; then, the mixture was fed into injection molding machine. The PP/GF composites with the highest mechanical properties were selected for further improvements using rubber powder. The obtained samples were tested using tension, impact, and wear tests. The results show that tensile strength of PP/GF composite was improved by 17.8 % by adding 15 wt % GF, and there was a huge drop in impact strength by 80 % for the same GF weight fraction (15 wt %) compared to that of pure PP because of existence of GF. Wear properties and impact strength were improved by adding rubber powder to the composite, with a low weight fraction of 5 wt %, due to the shock-absorbing properties of rubber powder. Micrographs of the fractured sample surfaces revealed the good adhesion between the GF, PP, and the rubber particles.

Background: Africa is facing the triple burden of communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and nutritional disorders. Multilateral institutions, bilateral arrangements, and philanthropies have historically privileged economic development over health concerns. That focus has resulted in weak health systems and inadequate preparedness when there are outbreaks of diseases. This review aims to understand the politics of disease control in Africa and global health diplomacy’s (GHD’s) critical role. Methods: A literature review was done in Medline/PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and Google scholar search engines. Keywords included MeSH and common terms related to the topics: "Politics," "disease control," "epidemics/ endemics," and "global health diplomacy" in the "African" context. The resources also included reports of World Health Organization, United Nations and resolutions of the World Health Assembly (WHA). Results: African countries continue to struggle in their attempts to build health systems for disease control that are robust enough to tackle the frequent epidemics that plague the continent. The politics of disease control requires the crafting of cooperative partnerships to accommodate the divergent interests of multiple actors. Recent outbreaks of COVID-19 and Ebola had a significant impact on African economies. It is extremely important to prioritize health in the African development agendas. The African Union (AU) should leverage the momentum of the rise of GHD to (i) navigate the politics of global health governance in an interconnected world(ii) develop robust preparedness and disease response strategies to tackle emerging and reemerging disease epidemics in the region (iii) address the linkages between health and broader human security issues driven by climate change-induced food, water, and other insecurities (iv) mobilize resources and capacities to train health officials in the craft of diplomacy. Conclusion: The AU, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and African Centres for Disease Control should harmonize their plans and strategies and align them towards a common goal that integrates health in African development agendas. The AU must innovatively harness the practice and tools of GHD towards developing the necessary partnerships with relevant actors in the global health arena to achieve the health targets of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Magnesium oxide (MgO) and Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) have been successfully synthesized by solid–solid reaction method. The structural properties of ZnO and MgO NPs were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD results indicated a formation of pure MgO and ZnO NPs. The mean diameter values of the agglomerated particles were around to be 70 and 50 nm for MgO and ZnO NPs, respectively using SEM analysis. Further, a wide-range of nuclear radiation shielding investigation for gamma-ray and fast neutrons have been studied for Magnesium oxide (MgO) and Zinc oxide (ZnO) samples. FLUKA and Microshield codes have been employed for the determination of mass attenuation coefficients (μm) and transmission factors (TF) of Magnesium oxide (MgO) and Zinc oxide (ZnO) samples. The calculated values for mass attenuation coefficients (μm) were utilized to determine other vital shielding properties against gamma-ray radiation. Moreover, the results showed that Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles with the lowest diameter value as 50 nm had a satisfactory capacity in nuclear radiation shielding.

Background: In 2018, the USAID Applying Science to Strengthen and Improve Systems (ASSIST) Project started a new partnership with four Eastern and Southern Caribbean countries impacted by the Zika virus: Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, St. Kitts and Nevis, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The goal of the project was to provide short-term technical assistance (STTA) to strengthen the health systems’ capacity to detect newborns and young children potentially affected by Zika and to address their health needs. To meet these objectives, ASSIST developed an innovative approach based on its existing model for service delivery improvement. This novel approach is known as Rapid, Multi-country, Parallel Process, Multi-tasking Approach for a Project Startup (RMPP-MAPS). An evaluation was conducted to document the STTA startup activities, to identify enabling and constraining factors, and to capture lessons learned. Methods: An external consultant conducted remote in-depth interviews with individuals involved in the startup using semi-structured interview guides and retrieved data from the review of project documents. Results: Using RMPP-MAPS, the ASSIST Project successfully implemented the startup for complex STTA in four countries within less than four months, spanning mid-May to early September 2018. Project milestones included achieving buy-in from stakeholders, co-developing the technical scope and materials, and rapidly executing critical operational functions. Dedicated project teams, country leaderships, and local champions were essential to overcoming the main challenges, which included a condensed timeframe, lack of in-country offices, and country-level factors such as a shortage of health care workers and a weak health infrastructure. Conclusions: The RMPP-MAPS is a feasible and resource-efficient mechanism of interest to implementers, donors, and low and middle-income countries facing temporal and financial limitations to rapidly addressing public health priorities.

Lower nitrogen use efficiency is major crop productivity limiting factor in semi-arid regions due to its poor organic contents in the soil; our research work is considered to optimize crop productivity by soil and plant chem-biological correction. This study designed and aimed to use soil inoculation with plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria of the genus Azospirillum and foiler application by humic preparations ALCRI-CropHelp and ALCRI-CropHelp-M compared with control and NPK fertilizer under wheat plants in arid regions of Egypt. Experimental data showed that biological correction contributed to a significant increase in wheat yield in the arid regions. The specific results for Azospirillum, ALCRI-CropHelp, and ALCRI-CropHelp-M were significantly increased wheat grain yield on 256, 267, and 278 % relative to the control, respectively. Simultaneously, water use efficiency has increased by more than 2.5 times, compared with control and NPK treatments. This effect was achieved due to multiple effects on the metabolism of agricultural plants, and applications of ALCRI-CropHelp and ALCRI-CropHelp-M treatments revealed an increase in the biological yield, spike length, harvest index compared with control and NPK treatments. In the present study, nanocomposites with different ratios of NiO and Co3O4 (x = 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7) have been prepared via microwave oven and characterized using XRD. FLUKA code has been used to estimate the values of the mass attenuation coefficient (μm) for all samples. From the measurement, we found that when the thickness of the samples increases, the gamma transmission values decrease. Besides, the μm values increase as the Co3O4 content increase from 0.3 to 0.7%. At selected photon energy, the HVL, TVL, and MFP values decrease with increasing Co3O4 concentrations. At low energies (0.1–0.5 MeV), the linear decreasing trend in MAC values indication that photoelectric effect (PEA) (∝1/E3.5) dominance over this region. Afterward, at medium energy regions (0.5–1.33 MeV), the decrements in MAC values are insignificant as the Compton scattering (CS) (∝1/E) phenomenon dominates. As a conclusion, CoNi3 has superior effectiveness as a shielding material.

Abstract Background Two field experiments were carried out at the Research and Production Station of the National Research Centre, Nubaria region, Behira Governorate, Egypt, during two winter seasons of 2014/2015 and 2015/2016. The aim of this study was to investigate the response of vegetative growth, yield, yield components, and some metabolic constituents of four faba bean (Vicia faba L.) cultivars “Nubaria 2, Sakha 1, Sakha 3, and Sakha 4” to foliar application of fulvic acid (FA) at 0.0, 3, 6, and 9 gL− 1. Results The results show that all applications of FA increased all vegetative characters (i.e., plant height, number of branches and leaves, and total dry weight/plant, fourth leaf area and leaf area index, specific leaf weight, and crop growth rate), as well as, yield and its components (i.e., number of pods/plant, weight of pods/plant, seed and straw yield/plant, seed and straw yield/feddan, and seed index) of all studied faba bean cultivars, comparing to untreated plants. The results also show the total photosynthetic pigments content in leaves were increased by increasing FA concentration up to 9 gL−1. Treatment FA at 9 gL−1, significantly improved the nutritional value and quality of seeds by increasing total carbohydrates, crude protein, minerals (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) content, arginine, lysine, phenylalanine, and tryptophan. Conclusions Generally, foliar application of FA at 9 gL−1, singly or interaction with Sakha 4 effectively increased seed yield and quality. In conclusion, the growth and yield contributing characters and quality of four bean cultivars could be improved with foliar application of FA treatments.

Just as in other modern industries, the term ‘innovation’ in healthcare has become associated with new developments in the field that allow for improvements in solving problems, in this instance, healthcare problems. This paper seeks to clarify what the term truly means. To address this issue, we first define innovation as a general term, then define what innovation means in the context of the healthcare industry. To better understand what may be considered ‘innovative’ in healthcare, we suggest criteria for innovation and identify potential challenges to newly introduced innovations in the field.

There are several examples of successes in improving health care. However, many of these remain limited to the sites at which they were originally developed. There are fewer examples of successful spread of the improvement more widely inside or outside the health systems within which they were developed. This article discusses the wave-sequence approach to spread or scale up, which enables take up of the improvement in a systematic and sequential way, using “spread agents” — people who participated in the original demonstration sites. The paper also discusses the concept of the “slice” of a system which is useful for thinking about spread and considers a phenomenon related to the rate of adoption which we have observed in this wave-sequence approach.

BackgroundThere have been a range of quality improvement (QI) and quality assurance initiatives in low- and middle-income countries to improve antiretroviral therapy (ART) treatment outcomes for people living with HIV. To date, these initiatives have not been systematically assessed and little is known about how effective, cost-effective, or sustainable these strategies are in improving clinical outcomes.MethodsWe conducted a systematic review adhering to PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO ID: CRD42017071848), searching PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane database of controlled trials for articles reporting on the effectiveness of QI and quality assurance initiatives in HIV programs in low- and middle-income countries in relation to ART uptake, retention in care, adherence, viral load suppression, mortality, and other outcomes including cost-effectiveness and long-term sustainability.ResultsOne thousand eight hundred sixty articles were found, of which 29 were included. QI approaches were categorized as follows: (1) health system approaches using QI methods; (2) QI learning networks including collaboratives; (3) standard-based methods that use QI tools to improve performance gaps; and (4) campaigns using QI methods. The greatest improvements were seen in ART uptake [median increase of 14.0%; interquartile range (IQR) -9.0 to 29.3], adherence [median increase of 22.0% (IQR -7.0 to 25.0)], and viral load suppression [median increase 26.0% (IQR -8.0 to 26.0)].ConclusionsQI interventions can be effective in improving clinical outcomes; however, there was significant variability, making it challenging to identify which aspects of interventions lead to clinical improvements. Standardizing reporting and assessment of QI initiatives is needed, supported by national quality policies and directorates, and robust research.
