Clusters of gold nanoparticles can be used as optically driven stoves to locally heat biological material such as DNA in biosensors or cancerous tissue in thermotherapy. Clusters of gold nanoparticles behave distinctively different from single nanoheaters as they accumulate heat in-between the individual nanoparticles. However, in very large clusters the rear nanoparticles are shed by front-lying nanoparticles such that the optothermal heating saturates with increasing cluster size. We focus on these two effects and describe the temporal and spatial development of heat generation and subsequent cooling of nanoparticle clusters excited by nanosecond laser pulses. It is found that (i) heat accumulation is most important for DNA melting assays to generate enough heat for DNA melting, (ii) shadowing effects are significant in micrometer sized nanoparticle clusters, and (iii) that DNA needs to be heated substantially above the equilibrium thermodynamic melting temperature in order to induce DNA melting by nano...

Introduction The clinical significance of the sonographic finding "periportal hyperechogenicity", which is characterized by hard periportal echoes, is largely undetermined. This phenomenon has been reported in a large number of disorders, as well as in healthy persons. Methods A prospective study of 1853 patients revealed this finding in 12 cases. These 12 patients were followed up after two to four months. Results Only four cases were seen to still have diffuse periportal accentuation in the follow-up, while five patients showed a partially and three a completely normal liver. The laboratory values of these 12 patients were largely normal at the time of diagnosis and follow-up. Periportal accentuation was not correlated with any hepatological disorders. Examination using two different ultrasound devices revealed no major differences. Discussion Overall, these findings confirm the earlier assumption that this sonographic picture designated as periportal hyperechogenicity or accentuation is not diagnostic of any hepatological disorder, nor is it even a sign of disease, because most patients with this phenomenon can be termed hepatologically "healthy".

We show how to change optically the distance between two protein-linked gold nanoparticles by Raman-induced motion of the linker protein. Rayleigh scattering spectroscopy of the coupled-particle plasmon allows us to compare the inter-nanoparticle distance of individual protein-linked gold nanoparticle dimers before and after surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). We find that low-intensity (50 microW/microm2) laser light in resonance with the nanoparticle-dimer plasmon provokes a change of the inter-nanoparticle distance on the order of 0.5 nm whenever SERS from the proteins connecting the nanoparticles can be observed.

Gold nanoparticles manipulate the quantum efficiency of phosphorescent molecules, which are attached via biotin−streptavidin recognition at a distance of 4 nm to the nanoparticle surface. Time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy reveals an increase in the radiative as well as in the nonradiative rate of the phosphorescent molecules upon binding to gold nanoparticles. The increase in the radiative rate alone would lead to an increased luminescence quantum yield. However, this effect is outweighed by the distinct enhancement of the nonradiative rate due to energy transfer, resulting in an overall quenching of the luminescence.

The general aim of work reported here was to assist designers and operators of routers and similar tools for cutting wood-composite boards, by providing a model predicting cutting force components from readily available material properties. This initial study explored, for edge cutting, the variation within a single medium density fibre board across the thickness and in various cutting directions in the plane of the board. Material properties of interest were specific gravity and friction coefficient. In slow linear cutting on a modified milling machine, carbide router inserts cut the edges of layers cut from a medium density fibre board. Specific gravity and coefficient of sliding friction were measured for each layer. Cuts were also made on full-thickness edges in various directions in the plane of the board. Chip thickness was varied from 0.025 to 0.8 mm. Parallel and normal force data and digital video images of chip formation were stored for analysis. Specific gravity increased as the fourth power of the distance from the central plane to the surface. Friction coefficient values, estimated both from cutting forces and from rubbing forces during return, varied about a value of 0.23, with no significant difference between layers. The values for cutting force per mm width of cut increased progressively from the central plane to the surface, in a logarithmic relation with specific gravity. The cutting forces did not vary with cutting direction in the plane of the board. For a sharp edge with 32° rake angle cutting at chip thickness values above 0.1 mm, the normal force component was negative, indicating reduced feed force and improved surface quality. With dulling, the threshold value of chip thickness for this increased. It is concluded that elaboration of this approach would generate relationships suitable for incorporating in a useful general model. However, it may be found that weight per unit area of board will suffice as a proxy for cutting resistance in modelling the cutting of full-thickness edges.

Die StOrung der oralen Myofunktion ist ein Krankheitsbild vorwiegend des Kindesalters, welches sich durch die Dysbalance der am Funktionskreis der Artikulationsorgane beteiligten Elemente auszeichnet. Hierzu gehOren besonders neben dem sog. «Zungenstoss» und Anomalien des Schluckablaufes auch Kiefer- und Zahnstellungsanomalien sowie ArtikulationsstOrungen. Typische Befunde werden anhand der in den letzten Jahren untersuchten Patienten dargestellt und diskutiert.

Transition metal complexes such as biotinylated ruthenium(II) tris(bipyridyl) and palladium(II) porphyrin show an increase in luminescence intensity and lifetime upon binding to streptavidin in aqueous solution. Here we show that this increase of luminescence lifetime and intensity are caused by the shielding of the transition metal complexes from dissolved oxygen through streptavidin rather than by hydrophobicity effects as recently claimed.

We show that plasmonic nanoresonators composed of two gold nanoparticles change not only the intensity but also the spectral shape of the emission of fluorescent molecules. The plasmonic resonance frequency can be tuned by varying the distance between the nanoparticles, which allows us to selectively favor transitions of a fluorescent molecule to a specific vibrational ground state. Experimental data from correlated scattering and fluorescence microscopy agree well with calculations in the framework of generalized Mie theory. Our results show that the widely used description of a dye molecule near a metal surface as a mere two-level system is inadequate.

We present a simple method for the fabrication of highly luminescent gold-containing films by thermal decomposition of gold(I) dodecylthiolate synthesized by treating an ethanol solution of gold tetrachloroauric acid with an ethanol solution of 1-dodecanethiol. During the heat treatment of gold(I) dodecylthiolate complexes homogeneously distributed in the polystyrene matrix, extinction spectra of the films change from the well resolved spectrum of a gold(I) thiolate complex peaked at 390 nm to the broad Plasmon peak of metallic gold centered around 600 nm. All samples, both before and after heat treatment, show a strong red emission, with a maximum in the spectral range of 620-640 nm. The room temperature emission quantum yield strongly increases from the nonheated films to the briefly heated films reaching a value of ~8%, and decreases for the samples where larger gold particles are formed after prolonged heating. Transmission electron microscopy shows the occurrence of monodisperse gold nanoparticles with 1.8 nm mean diameter in the polymer matrix. Extended heat treatment leads to the partial coalescence of these nanoparticles into larger particles of irregular shapes, with a size in the range of 10-200 nm. We explain these findings by the formation from the original luminescent Au(I)-thiolate complexes of an emissive species with even stronger luminescence. This species is consumed in the growth of larger Au particles upon further heating. From the spectroscopic data, the strongly luminescent species could be few-atom thiolated Au clusters or polynuclear Au(I)-thiolate complexes with strong aurophilic interactions.

The fluorescence quantum yield of Cy5 molecules attached to gold nanoparticles via ssDNA spacers is measured for Cy5-nanoparticle distances between 2 and 16 nm. Different numbers of ssDNA per nanoparticle allow to fine-tune the distance. The change of the radiative and nonradiative molecular decay rates with distance is determined using time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. Remarkably, the distance dependent quantum efficiency is almost exclusively governed by the radiative rate.

Since 1993 the Austrian Federal-Hospital-Law demands the guarantee of adequate psychotherapeutic and clinical psychological care in Austrian hospitals. The target of the present survey was to explore the extent of realisation of this demand concerning the psychotherapeutic care in the General Hospital of Vienna (AKH). 125 of the 128 employees with psychotherapeutic qualifications were interviewed. The considerable number of psychotherapeutically qualified employees cannot obscure the fact that inadequate structural preconditions impede a satisfying care. These are: most of the interviewed persons have been employed because of other vocational qualifications (medical doctors, psychologists etc.). Therefore they can only use a very limited part of their worktime on psychotherapeutic interventions. Deficits of spatial and temporal resources could be detected as well as unclear vocational characteristics and qualification requirements. These deficits point out the necessity of developing professionally founded organisation structures, which enable well aimed networking and an optimal usage of resources.

Ab welchem Lebensalter wird die Bezeichnung „alt“ fur passend befunden? In der Literatur wird zumeist 65 Jahre angenommen. Diese Grenze ist will-kurlich. Sie geht davon aus, dass in dieser Lebenszeit mehrere irreversible korperliche und soziale Marksteine eingetroffen sind, die in unverruckbarer Weise an das nahende Lebensende gemahnen. Die Anzahl alter Menschen nimmt aufgrund der hoheren Lebenserwartung bestandig zu. Dies gilt insbesondere fur Frauen. So wird fur das Jahr 2005 erwartet, dass 2,2 Millionen Menschen alter als 100 Jahre alt sein werden. Hervorzuheben ist, dass die reproduktive Phase endgultig durch die abgeschlossene Menopause vorbei ist. Frauen werden aber in hohem Mase uber ihre reproduktiven Fahigkeiten definiert. Eine der schwerwiegendsten psychosozialen Veranderungen im Leben eines Menschen ist eingetreten, der Ruckzug aus dem Berufsleben. Die eigene Pensionierung fallt oft mit jener des Lebenspartners zusammen. Vorhandene Kinder haben nicht nur die Familie verlassen, sondern Enkelkinder beschert, die neben der Freude den Alternsprozess unterstreichen. Einsamkeit ist fur alte Menschen ein schwerwiegendes Problem. Je alter sie werden, desto mehr gehen sie ihrer gewohnten sozialen Beziehungen mit Gleichaltrigen verlustig.

Schwangerschaft wird vorwiegend als private, intime Erfahrung im Leben einer Frau betrachtet, eine Ubergangserfahrung, die sie zur Mutter macht. Dem steht gegenuber, dass sich die soziale Umwelt nur dann nicht fur die Bedingungen des Zustandekommens der Schwangerschaft interessiert und sie nicht sanktioniert, wenn keine kulturellen und sexuellen Normen bei ihrem Zustandekommen verletzt wurden. In fruheren Zeiten gait dies ausschlieslich fur den Fall der Zeugung in der Ehe, derzeit werden vielerorts nicht verheiratete Frauen mit eingeschlossen. Schwangerschaft und Mutterschaft ohne den Mann, der das Kind gezeugt hat, sind gesellschaftsfahig geworden. Elternschaft ohne Partner ist psychisch und okonomisch dennoch sehr muhsam, auch wenn soziale Sanktionen fehlen. Zugleich ist in der katholischen Religion die Zeugung ohne Partner ein religioses Ideal, das allerdings Gott vorbehalten ist. Aus diesem Kontext erklart sich die unerhorte Publizitat, die alle Verfahren der Reproduktionstechnologie betreffen. Hier werden namlich sexuelle, zwischenmenschliche und Macht-Tabus verletzt, also zentrale Konfliktthemen der menschlichen Existenz. Konnten wir ersteren Aspekt noch aus der Neugierde begreifen, die provoziert wird, so durfen wir nicht vergessen, dass massive gesellschaftliche Interessen (biologische Abstammung, Erbschaftsfragen, Namengebung, etc.) beruhrt werden. Dies erklart die zu beobachtende Mischung aus Neugier und Abscheu gegenuber den modernen Reproduktionstechnologien.

Geburt und Sexualitat stehen in einer weitaus engeren Beziehung, als aus der Anerkennung der Schwangerschaft als Produkt des Sexualaktes zwischen einem Mann und einer Frau hervorgeht oder in der tiefenpsychologischen Terminologie zum Ausdruck kommt, die Schwangerschaft und Geburt als bedeutende psychosexuelle Ereignisse behandelt. Schlieslich spielt sich die Geburt nicht nur in der Phantasie ab, sondern insbesondere in der Realitat des betroffenen weiblichen Korpers.

Arzte wurden sich zu sehr auf die Reduktion von Mortalitat konzentrieren und das psychische und sexuelle Wohlbefinden ihrer Patientinnen haufig ignorieren, wird wiederholt kritisiert [12,14]. Daher erfolgt nach einer Klarung des Gegenstandsbereichs ein kurzer Uberblick uber die empirischen Daten zu diesem Thema. Sie beziehen sich ausschlieslich auf solche Arbeiten, die sich mit Organverlust beschaftigen, der den Betroffenen von Frauenarzten zugefugt wurde. Dies bedeutet, das es sich um Organe handelt, die im engeren Sinne als Geschlechtsorgane klassifiziert werden und das ein medizinischer Eingriff an diesen Organen mit dem Ziel vorgenommen wurde, eine bestehende Erkrankung zu heilen. Weiter ist zu bedenken, das solche Erkrankungen in der Mehrzahl, wenngleich nicht ausschlieslich, Frauen ab den mittleren Lebensjahren betreffen, und diese Erkrankungen, vor allem wenn es sich um ein Karzinom handelt, praoperativ keine oder nur sehr geringe subjektive Beschwerden verursacht haben. Dies bedeutet konkret, das betroffene Frauen postoperativ nicht selten mit groseren Beschwerden und Einschrankungen konfrontiert sind als praoperativ und das sie dazu angehalten sind, diese Beschwerden und Einschrankungen als im Dienste der Heilung stehend zu interpretieren. Dies gilt in gleicher Weisefur ihre Lebenspartner und alle Menschen, mit denen sie in naher Beziehung stehen. Ein keineswegs leichtes Unterfangen.

Different types of Binary Nanoparticle Superlattices (BNSLs) have been self-assembled from monodisperse 8.7 nm CdSe and 5.5 nm Au nanocrystals. Fluorescence spectroscopy studies of AlB2-type BNSL of CdSe and Au nanocrystals revealed considerably decreased fluorescence and a shortened fluorescence lifetime of the CdSe NCs in BNSLs compared to the CdSe-only sample.

Mother-father relationship during pregnancy and its influence on obstetric complications, such as premature contractions, has been little investigated, but seems to be far more important than has been acknowledged so far. From a psychoanalytic and psychodynamic perspective three case studies are used to illustrate the ongoing dynamics. First the fetus is identified with an object of the past and/or the present. To ward off threatening object representations the pregnant woman needs a third person, the father. If he is unavailable for her she is in danger of rejecting the child. Results are discussed also in relation to the medical support system.

In a psychosomatic study we interviewed 33 women who had undergone tubal anastomosis or IvF after tubal ligation. As a control group we chose a randomised sample of 45 women after elective tubal ligation. We used a semi-structured interview and the Giessen-test as psychometric instruments. According to the leading indication for reanastomosis, we allocated women to one of 2 groups: 21 patients had found a new partner (R-partner), 12 mentioned experiences of loss (R-loss). The groups were well comparable in respect of sociodemographic items, but showed relevant differences in psychological variables, like motivation for and time for deliberation to sterilisation or age difference between partners. Women of the R-partner group were highly satisfied with tubal reanastomosis as compared to R-loss subjects. Satisfaction with the procedure was basically independent of an actual pregnancy. Women experienced the two methods in different, rather specific ways. Cluster analysis of the Giessen-test result confirmed group allocation. We conclude that experiences of loss as a leading reason for tubal reanastomosis are unfavourable prognostic factors. IvF has an unfavourable prognosis in women with the intention to restore the mutilated body image. Preoperative counselling by a psychotherapeutically trained counsellor seems mandatory.

Hans Strotzka (1917–1994), ein Wegbereiter der wissenschaftlichen Psychotherapie in Osterreich, definiert: „Psychotherapie ist ein bewuster und geplanter interaktioneller Prozes zur Beeinflussung von Verhaltensstorungen und Leidenszustanden, die in einem Konsensus (moglichst zwischen Patient, Therapeut und Bezugsgruppe) fur behandlungsbedurftig gehalten werden, mit psychologischen Mitteln (durch Kommunikation) meist verbal aber auch averbal, in Richtung auf ein definiertes, nach Moglichkeit gemeinsam erarbeitetes Ziel (Symptomminimalisierung und/oder Strukturanderung der Personlichkeit) mittels lehrbarer Techniken auf der Basis einer Theorie des normalen und pathologischen Verhaltens.“ (Strotzka 1978, S. 3).

Die Psychonanalyse ist untrennbar verbunden mit ihrem Begrunder Sigmund Freud (1856–1939). In seinem umfangreichen Werk legte er die Grundlagen fur die gesamte Theoriebildung hinsichtlich der psychoanalytischen Entwicklungspsychologie und der psychoanalytischen Behandlungstheorie. Die wesentlichsten psychoanalytischen Theoriebildungen lassen sich kennzeichnen durch die Begriffe Triebtheorie, Ichpsychologie, Objektbeziehungstheorie und Selbstpsychologie. Psychoanalyse bezeichnet 1. ein Verfahren zur Untersuchung unbewuster und bewuster seelischer Vorgange, 2. dessen Anwendung als psychotherapeutische Methode zur Erforschung und Behandlung psychischer Storungen und Erkrankungen, 3. eine Wissenschaft, die die so gewonnenen Einsichten uber die Entstehung und den Ablauf seelischer Vorgange zu einer umfassenden Theorie psychischer Funktionen erweitert hat und 4. die Anwendung dieser Erkenntnisse auf gesellschafts- und kulturpolitische Fragen.

Seit 1.1.1991 ist ein Bundesgesetz in Kraft, das die Ausubung von Psychotherapie und die Ausbildung zum Psychotherapeuten (Psychotherapiegesetz) regelt. Danach ist die Psychotherapie ein eigenstandiger Heilberuf, der einer besonderen Ausbildung bedarf. Diese gliedert sich in das „psychotherapeutische Propadeutikum“ und das „psychotherapeutische Fachspezifikum“. Mit der psychotherapeutischen fachspezifischen Ausbildung darf erst nach Vollendung des 24. Lebensjahres und der abgeschlossenen propadeutischen Ausbildung begonnen werden. Zur selbstandigen Ausubung von Psychotherapie mus das 28. Lebensjahr vollendet, propadeutische und fachspezifische Ausbildung abgeschlossen sein, sowie die Eintragung in die Psychotherapeutenliste erfolgt sein. Die Ausbildung steht ohne Einschrankung den folgenden Berufsgruppen offen (Quellenberufe): Abschlus des Studiums der Medizin, Psychologie, Padagogik, Philosophie, Publizistik und Kommunikationswissenschaft, Theologie, Lehramtstudium fur hohere Schulen, Ausbildung an einer Akademie fur Sozialarbeit, Padagogische Akademie, eine mit Offentlichkeitsrecht ausgestattete Lehranstalt fur Ehe- und Familienberater, sowie Kurzstudium oder Hochschullehrgang fur Musiktherapie. Personen ohne solche Eingangvoraussetzungen bedurfen zusatzlicher Eignungsgutachten.
