French Civil and Penal Procedure Codes require a police officer or a public prosecutor to investigate deaths if the police are aware of violent, criminal, suspect or unknown causes of a death or if a retrieved body needs to be identified. The police officers need to inspect the scene of the death helped by a medical doctor to explain appearances of the body and the circumstances of death. For that purpose, a medical doctor may be required by the police or the justice authorities to assist, using penal procedure facilities.Commonly in those circumstances, the required practician is the nearest and is often poorly experienced in the matter of death examination and certification.
