Abstract Background Foraging behavior in insects is optimised for locating scattered resources in a complex environment. This behavior can be exploited for use in pest control. Inhibition of feeding can protect crops whereas stimulation can increase the uptake of insecticides. For example, the success of a bait spray, depends on either contact or ingestion, and thus on the insect finding it. Methods To develop an effective bait spray against the invasive pest, Drosophila suzukii, we investigated aspects of foraging behavior that influence the likelihood that the pest interacts with the baits, in summer and winter morphotypes. We video-recorded the flies’ approach behavior towards four stimuli in a two-choice experiment on strawberry leaflets. To determine the most effective bait positioning, we also assessed where on plants the pest naturally forages, using a potted raspberry plant under natural environmental conditions. We also studied starvation resistance at 20 °C and 12 °C for both morphs. Results We found that summer morph flies spent similar time on all baits (agar, combi-protec, yeast) whereas winter morphs spent more time on yeast than the other baits. Both morphs showed a preference to feed at the top of our plant’s canopy. Colder temperatures enhanced survival under starvation conditions in both morphs, and mortality was reduced by food treatment. Conclusions These findings on feeding behavior support informed decisions on the type and placement of a bait to increase pest control.

Recent advances in redox flow batteries have made them a viable option for grid-scale energy storage, however they exhibit low energy density. One way to boost energy density is by increasing the cell potential using a nonaqueous system. Molecular engineering has proven to be an effective strategy to develop redox-active compounds with extreme potentials but these are usually challenged by resource sustainability of the newly developed redox materials. Here, we investigate the utility of phosphine oxides as anolytes with extremely negative potentials. Specifically, we found that cyclic triphenylphosphine oxide (CPO), has a highly negative potential (-2.4 V vs Fc/Fc + ). Importantly, CPO is synthesized from triphenylphosphine oxide, a common industrial chemical waste with no commercial value. Structural and electrochemical characterization of the reduced radical anion showed that enhanced stability is due to cyclization or extended pi-conjugation. Importantly, mechanistic investigation into the decomposition of CPO under various solvents and electrochemical conditions allowed us to utilize an acetonitrile/DMF binary solvent system to enable a long-lived anolyte which exhibited no fade over 350 cycles. In summary, this work led to the development of a waste-derived cyclic phosphine oxide that exhibits excellent cycling stability making it an ideal anolyte toward the development of energy-dense RFBs.

Photoexcited organic chromophores appended to molecular qubits can serve as a source of spin initialization or multilevel qudit generation for quantum information applications. So far, this approach has been primarily investigated in chromophore-stable radical systems. Here, we extend this concept to a meso-meso linked oxovanadium(IV) porphyrin-free-base porphyrin dimer. Femtosecond transient absorption experiments reveal that photoexcitation of the free-base porphyrin leads to picosecond triplet state formation via enhanced intersystem crossing. Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) experiments carried out at both 85 K and room temperature reveal the formation of a long-lived spin-polarized quartet state through triplet-doublet spin mixing. Notably, a distinct hyperfine structure arising from the interaction between the electron spin quartet state and the vanadyl nucleus ( 51 V, I = 7/2) is evident, with the quartet state showing long-lived spin polarization even at room temperature. Theoretical simulations of the TREPR spectra confirm the photogenerated quartet state and provide insights into the non-Boltzmann spin populations. Exploiting this phenomenon affords the possibility of using photoinduced triplet states in porphyrins for quantum information as a resource to polarize and magnetically couple molecular electronic or nuclear spin qubits and qudits.

Singlet exciton fission (SF) and symmetry-breaking charge separation (SB-CS) are both photophysical processes that can occur between two organic chromophores and are both of interest to improve solar energy conversion. Here, we tuned the photophysics of a 9,9'-bianthracene ( BA ) single crystal between SF and SB-CS using solvent intercalation to change the electric field within the crystal. Crystals of BA were grown in o -xylene, chlorobenzene, o -dichlorobenzene, and benzonitrile, as well as solvent-free from a melt. The crystals were studied by X-ray diffraction, steady-state optical spectroscopy, and transient absorption microscopy to elucidate the role of the intercalated solvent molecules. The crystals with no solvent in the structure undergo fast SF (<2 ps), while the crystals with intercalated moderately polar solvents o -xylene, chlorobenzene, and o -dichlorobenzene show evidence of charge-transfer-mediated SF. Finally, the crystals containing highly polar benzonitrile undergo SB-CS instead of SF. These results demonstrate that controlling solvation of BA in the crystal structure can tune its photophysics between SF and SB-CS.

Understanding charge transfer (CT) dynamics in donor-acceptor (D-A) cocrystals is important for the development of efficient organic photovoltaic and electronic materials. This study explores the photogenerated CT states of supramolecular tessellations formed by cocrystallizing a chiral tris(naphthalenediimide) triangular prism (-)-NDI-Δ with pyrene, perylene, and peri -xanthenoxanthene electron donors. By manipulating crystallization conditions, one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) cocrystals with distinct structural motifs and morphologies are achieved. Femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption microscopies and time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy were employed to elucidate the CT state dynamics. Our findings reveal that the CT state lifetimes are lengthened in the 2D cocrystals relative to the 1D cocrystals, which is attributable to the symmetry and molecular packing differences between them that modulate the CT interactions. This work highlights the potential of using preorganized covalent multisite charge carriers as donors or acceptors in cocrystals as a strategy for engineering structures for advanced multifunctional materials with tunable CT properties.

We report on new donor-chromophore-acceptor triads BDX-ANI-NDI and BDX-ANI-xy-NDI where the BDX donor is 2,2,6,6-tetramethylbenzo[1,2- d ;4,5- d ]bis[1,3]dioxole, the ANI chromophore is 4-( N -piperidinyl)naphthalene-1,8-dicarboximide, the NDI acceptor is naphthalene-1,8:4,5-bis(dicarboximide), and xy is a 2,5-xylyl spacer. The results on these compounds are compared to the analogous derivatives having a p -methoxyaniline (MeOAn) as the donor. BDX • + has no nitrogen atoms and only a single hydrogen atom coupled to its unpaired electron spin, and therefore has significantly decreased hyperfine interactions compared to MeOAn •+ . We use femtosecond transient absorption (fsTA) and nanosecond TA (nsTA) spectroscopies, the latter with an applied static magnetic field, to study the charge transfer dynamics and determine the spin-spin exchange interaction ( J ) for BDX •+ -ANI-NDI •- and BDX •+ -ANI-xy-NDI •- at both ambient and cryogenic temperatures. Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and pulse-EPR measurements on these spin-correlated radical pairs (SCRPs) were used to probe their spin dynamics. We demonstrate that BDX •+ -ANI-xy-NDI •- has an unusually long lifetime of ∼550 μs in glassy butyronitrile (PrCN) at 85 K, which makes it useful for pulse-EPR studies that target quantum information science (QIS) applications. We also show that rotation of the BDX group about the single bond linking it to the neighboring phenyl group has a significant impact on the spin dynamics, and in particular the magnitude of J . By comparing the results on these compounds to the analogous MeOAn series, insights into design principles for creating improved spin-correlated radical pair systems for QIS studies are obtained.

The excitation of carbonyl compounds by light to generate radical intermediates has historically been restricted to ketones and aldehydes; carboxylic acids have been overlooked because of high energy requirements and low quantum efficiency. A successful activation strategy would necessitate a bathochromic shift in the absorbance profile, an increase in triplet diradical lifetime, and ease of further functionalization. We present a single-flask transformation of carboxylic acids to acyl phosphonates that can access synthetically useful triplet diradicals under visible light or near-ultraviolet irradiation. The use of phosphorus circumvents unproductive Norrish type I processes, promoting selectivity that enables hydrogen-atom transfer reactivity. Use of this strategy promotes the efficient scaffold remodeling of carboxylic acids through various annulation, contraction, and expansion manifolds.

Coherent phonon modes supported by plasmonic nanoparticles offer prospective applications in chemical and biological sensing. Whereas the characterization of these phonon modes often requires single-particle measurements, synthetic routes to narrow size distributions of nanoparticles permit ensemble investigations. Recently, the synthesis of highly monodisperse gold tetrahedral nanoparticles with tunable edge lengths and corner sharpnesses has been developed. Herein, we characterize a size series of these nanoparticles in colloidal dispersion via transient absorption spectroscopy to examine their mechanical and plasmonic responses upon photoexcitation. Oscillations of transient absorption signals are observed in the plasmon resonance and correspond to the lowest-order radial breathing modes of the nanoparticles, the frequencies of which are affected by the edge length and truncation of the corners. Homogeneous quality factor values ranging from 24 to 34 are observed for the oscillations that convey potential utility in mass-sensing and plasmon-exciton-coupling photonics schemes. Finite-difference time domain and finite element analysis calculations establish specific optically relevant phonon modes.

Chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) has the potential to control the spin dynamics of chiral molecules for applications in quantum information science. Here we investigate the effect of CISS on the spin dynamics of radical pair formation following photodriven hole transfer in a pair of donor-chiral bridge-acceptor (D-Bχ-A) enantiomers, where D = 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl[1,3]-dioxolo[4,5- f ][1,3]benzodioxole, Bχ = ( R )- or ( S )-2,2'-dimethoxy-4,4'-diphenyl-5,5',6,6',7,7',8,8'-octahydro-1,1'-binaphthalene, and A = naphthalene-(1,4:5,8)-bis(dicarboximide). The results are compared to those obtained on the corresponding achiral D-B-A reference molecule in which B = 2″,3',5',6″-tetramethyl-1,1':4',1″:4″,1‴-quaterphenyl. Photoexcitation of A in a randomly oriented sample of D-Bχ-A in glassy butyronitrile at 85 K results in subnanosecond two-step hole transfer from 1 *A to D to form D •+ -Bχ-A •- , which was characterized using time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectroscopy at X (9.6 GHz), Q (34 GHz), and W (94 GHz) bands. The spectra show line shape changes that are characteristic of a ∼38% contribution of CISS to the spin dynamics of D •+ -Bχ-A •- formation. The line shape changes resulting from CISS are particularly apparent in the TREPR spectra at X -band as predicted by recent theory. These results show that (1) CISS has a significant influence on radical pair dynamics initiated by photodriven hole transfer, which is complementary to our recent electron transfer results, and (2) CISS can be detected using TREPR on radical pairs that are randomly oriented relative to an external magnetic field.

A complex interplay of structural, electronic, and vibrational degrees of freedom underpins the fate of molecular excited states. Organic assemblies exhibit a myriad of excited-state decay processes, such as symmetry-breaking charge separation (SB-CS), excimer (EX) formation, singlet fission, and energy transfer. Recent studies of cofacial and slip-stacked perylene-3,4:9,10-bis(dicarboximide) (PDI) multimers demonstrate that slight variations in core substituents and H- or J-type aggregation can determine whether the system follows an SB-CS pathway or an EX one. However, questions regarding the relative importance of structural properties and molecular vibrations in driving the excited-state dynamics remain. Here, we use a combination of two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy, femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy, and quantum chemistry computations to compare the photophysics of two PDI dimers. The dimer with 1,7-bis(pyrrolidin-1'-yl) substituents (5PDI2) undergoes ultrafast SB-CS from a photoexcited mixed state, while the dimer with bis-1,7-(3',5'-di-t-butylphenoxy) substituents (PPDI2) rapidly forms an EX state. Examination of their quantum beating features reveals that SB-CS in 5PDI2 is driven by the collective vibronic coupling of two or more excited-state vibrations. In contrast, we observe signatures of low-frequency vibrational coherence transfer during EX formation by PPDI2, which aligns with several previous studies. We conclude that key electronic and structural differences between 5PDI2 and PPDI2 determine their markedly different photophysics., (© 2024 Author(s). Nonisocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs) show promise as more sustainable alternatives to conventional isocyanate-based polyurethanes (PUs). In this study, polyhydroxyurethane (PHU) and nonisocyanate polythiourethane (NIPTU) production and reprocessing models inform the results of a techno-economic analysis and a life cycle assessment. The profitability of selling PHU and NIPTU is rationalized by identifying significant production costs, indicating that raw materials drive the costs of PHU and NIPTU production and reprocessing. After stepping along a path of process improvements, PHU and NIPTU can achieve minimum selling prices (MSPs) of 3.15 and 4.39 USD kg -1 , respectively. Depolymerization yields need to be optimized, and polycondensation reactions need to be investigated for the reprocessing of NIPUs into secondary (2°) NIPUs. Of the NIPUs examined here, PHU has a low depolymerization yield and NIPTU has a high depolymerization yield. Fossil energy use, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and water consumption are reported for the biobased production of PHU, NIPTU, 2° PHU, and 2° NIPTU and compared with baseline values for fossil-based PU production. There are options for reducing environmental impacts, which could make these pathways more sustainable. If barriers to implementation are overcome, 2° NIPUs can be manufactured at lower cost and environmental impacts than those of virgin NIPUs., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2024 The Authors. The inherently low sensitivity of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is the major limiting factor for its application to elucidate structure and dynamics in solids. In the solid state, nuclear spin hyperpolarization methods based on microwave-induced dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) provide a versatile platform to enhance the bulk NMR signal of many different sample formulations, leading to significant sensitivity improvements. Here we show that 1 H NMR hyperpolarization can also be generated in solids at high magnetic fields by optical irradiation of the sample. We achieved this by exploiting a donor-chromophore-acceptor molecule with an excited state electron-electron interaction similar to the nuclear Larmor frequency, enabling solid-state 1 H photochemically induced DNP (photo-CIDNP) at high magnetic fields. Through hyperpolarization relay, we obtained bulk NMR signal enhancements ε H by factors of ∼100 at both 9.4 and 21.1 T for the 1 H signal of o -terphenyl in magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR experiments at 100 K. These findings open a pathway toward a general light-induced hyperpolarization approach for dye-sensitized high-field NMR in solids.

We report the synthesis and characterization of a covalently linked asymmetric cyclophane comprising a 1,7-di(pyrrolidin-1'-yl)perylene-3,4,9,10-bis(dicarboximide) (pyrPDI) and 1,6,7,12-tetra(4'- t -butylphenoxy)perylene-3,4,9,10-bis(dicarboximide) (tpPDI), which absorbs light from 400-750 nm. Single crystals of pyrPDI-tpPDI were analyzed by using X-ray diffraction and transient absorption microscopy. The crystal structure contains several types of intermolecular donor-acceptor interactions (pyrPDI-pyrPDI, tpPDI-tpPDI, and pyrPDI-tpPDI) in addition to the covalently installed intramolecular interaction. Following photoexcitation of the pyrPDI-tpPDI single crystal, the transient absorption data show that charge separation occurs in τ = 21 ps, which is about nine times faster than in toluene solution, while charge recombination occurs in τ > 2 μs, which is more than 400 times longer than in solution. The faster charge separation in the single crystals results from the intermolecular donor-acceptor pyrPDI-tpPDI interactions, while the greatly enhanced charge-separated state lifetime is a consequence of charge transport through the intermolecular π-stacks. These results demonstrate the utility of pre-organizing donor-acceptor structural motifs to elicit specific crystal morphologies that can lead to enhanced photogenerated charge carrier lifetimes for solar energy conversion., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Solid-state photochemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization (photo-CIDNP) is a nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy technique in which nuclear spin hyperpolarization is generated upon optical irradiation of an appropriate donor-acceptor system. Until now, solid-state photo-CIDNP at high magnetic fields has been observed only in photosynthetic reaction centers and flavoproteins. In the present work, we show that the effect is not limited to such biomolecular samples, and solid-state 13 C photo-CIDNP can be observed at 9.4 T under magic angle spinning using a frozen solution of a synthetic molecular system dissolved in an organic solvent. Signal enhancements for the source molecule larger than a factor of 2300 are obtained. In addition, we show that bulk 13 C hyperpolarization of the solvent can be generated via spontaneous 13 C- 13 C spin diffusion at natural abundance.

Crystalline donor-acceptor (D-A) systems serve as an excellent platform for studying CT exciton creation, migration, and dissociation into free charge carriers for solar energy conversion. Donor-acceptor cocrystals have been utilized to develop an understanding of CT exciton formation in ordered organic solids; however, the strong electronic coupling of the D and A units can sometimes limit charge separation lifetimes due to their close proximity. Covalent D-A systems that preorganize specific donor-acceptor structures can assist in engineering crystal morphologies that promote long-lived charge separation to overcome this limitation. Here we investigate photogenerated CT exciton formation in a single crystal of a 2,5,8,11-tetraphenylperylene (PerPh 4 ) donor to which four identical naphthalene-(1,4:5,8)-bis(dicarboximide) (NDI) electron acceptors are covalently attached at the para positions of the PerPh 4 phenyl groups to yield PerPh 4 -NDI 4 . X-ray crystallography shows that the four NDIs pack pairwise into two distinct motifs. Two NDI acceptors of one PerPh 4 -NDI 4 are positioned over the PerPh 4 donors of adjacent PerPh 4 -NDI 4 molecules with the donor and acceptor π-systems having a large dihedral angle between them, while the other two NDIs of PerPh 4 -NDI 4 form xylene-NDI van der Waals π-stacks with the corresponding NDIs in adjacent PerPh 4 -NDI 4 molecules. Upon selective photoexcitation of PerPh 4 in the single crystal, CT exciton formation occurs in <300 fs yielding electron-hole pairs that live for more than ∼16 μs. This demonstrates the effectiveness of covalently linked D-A systems for engineering single crystal structures that promote efficient and long-lived charge separation for solar energy conversion.

Semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) offer prospective use as active optical elements in photovoltaics, light-emitting diodes, lasers, and photocatalysts due to their tunable optical absorption and emission properties, high stability, and scalable solution processing, as well as compatibility with additive manufacturing routes. Over the course of experiments, during device fabrication, or while in use commercially, these materials are often subjected to intense or prolonged electronic excitation and high carrier densities. The influence of such conditions on ligand integrity and binding remains underexplored. Here, we expose CdSe NCs to laser excitation and monitor changes in oleate that is covalently attached to the NC surface using nuclear magnetic resonance as a function of time and laser intensity. Higher photon doses cause increased rates of ligand loss from the particles, with upward of 50% total ligand desorption measured for the longest, most intense excitation. Surprisingly, for a range of excitation intensities, fragmentation of the oleate is detected and occurs concomitantly with formation of aldehydes, terminal alkenes, H 2 , and water. After illumination, NC size, shape, and bandgap remain constant although low-energy absorption features (Urbach tails) develop in some samples, indicating formation of substantial trap states. The observed reaction chemistry, which here occurs with low photon to chemical conversion efficiency, suggests that ligand reactivity may require examination for improved NC dispersion stability but can also be manipulated to yield desired photocatalytically accessed chemical species.

Photoexcitation of molecular electron donor and/or acceptor chromophore aggregates can greatly affect their charge-transfer dynamics. Excitonic coupling not only alters the energy landscape in the excited state but may also open new photophysical pathways, such as symmetry-breaking charge separation (SB-CS). Here, we investigate the impact of excitonic coupling on a covalent donor-acceptor-acceptor system comprising a perylene donor (Per) and two perylenediimide (PDI) acceptor chromophores in which the three components are π-stacked in a geometry that is slipped along their long axes ( Per-PDI 2 ). Following selective photoexcitation of PDI, femtosecond transient absorption data for Per-PDI 2 is compared to that for the single-donor, single-acceptor Per-PDI system, and the PDI 2 dimer, which both have the same interchromophore geometry as Per-PDI 2 . The data show that electron transfer from Per to the lower exciton state of the PDI dimer is slower than that of the single PDI acceptor system. This is due to the lower free energy of the reaction for charge separation because of the electronic stabilization afforded by the excitonic coupling between the PDIs. While PDI 2 was shown previously to undergo ultrafast SB-CS, the strong π-π electronic interaction of Per with the adjacent PDI in Per-PDI 2 breaks the electronic symmetry of the PDI dimer, resulting in the oxidation of Per rather than SB-CS. These results show that the electronic coupling between molecules designed to accept charges produced by SB-CS in molecular dimers and the chromophores comprising the dimer must be balanced to favor SB-CS.

The photogeneration of multiple unpaired electron spins within molecules is a promising route to applications in quantum information science because they can be initialized into well-defined, multilevel quantum states ( S > 1/2) and reproducibly fabricated by chemical synthesis. However, coherent manipulation of these spin states is difficult to realize in typical molecular systems due to the lack of selective addressability and short coherence times of the spin transitions. Here, these challenges are addressed by using donor-acceptor single cocrystals composed of pyrene and naphthalene dianhydride to host spatially oriented triplet excitons, which exhibit promising photogenerated qutrit properties. Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectroscopy demonstrates that spatially orienting triplet excitons in a single crystal platform imparts narrow, well-resolved, tunable resonances in the triplet EPR spectrum, allowing selective addressability of the spin sublevel transitions. Pulse-EPR spectroscopy reveals that at temperatures above 30 K, spin decoherence of these triplet excitons is driven by exciton diffusion. However, coherence is limited by electronic spin dipolar coupling below 30 K, where T 2 varies nonlinearly with the optical excitation density due to exciton annihilation. Overall, an optimized coherence time of T 2 = 7.1 μs at 20 K is achieved. These results provide important insights into designing solid-state molecular excitonic materials with improved spin qutrit properties.

Over the past two decades, the chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect was reported in several experiments disclosing a unique connection between chirality and electron spin. Recent theoretical works highlighted time-resolved Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (trEPR) as a powerful tool to directly detect the spin polarization resulting from CISS. Here, we report a first attempt to detect CISS at the molecular level by linking the pyrene electron donor to the fullerene acceptor with chiral peptide bridges of different length and electric dipole moment. The dyads are investigated by an array of techniques, including cyclic voltammetry, steady-state and transient optical spectroscopies, and trEPR. Despite the promising energy alignment of the electronic levels, our multi-technique analysis reveals no evidence of electron transfer (ET), highlighting the challenges of spectroscopic detection of CISS. However, the analysis allows the formulation of guidelines for the design of chiral organic model systems suitable to directly probe CISS-polarized ET., (© 2023 The Authors. An important criterion for quantum operations is long qubit coherence times. To elucidate the influence of molecular structure on the coherence times of molecular spin qubits and qudits, a series of molecules featuring perylenediimide (PDI) chromophores covalently linked to stable nitroxide radicals were synthesized and investigated by pulse electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Photoexcitation of PDI in these systems creates an excited quartet state ( Q ) followed by a spin-polarized doublet ground state ( D 0 ), which hold promise as spin qudits and qubits, respectively. By tailoring the molecular structure of these spin qudit/qubit candidates by selective deuteration and eliminating intramolecular motion, coherence times of T m = 9.1 ± 0.3 and 4.2 ± 0.3 μs at 85 K for D 0 and Q , respectively, are achieved. These coherence times represent a nearly 3-fold enhancement compared to those of the initial molecular design. This approach offers a rational structural design protocol for effectively extending coherence times in molecular spin qudits/qubits.

Understanding how to utilize symmetry-breaking charge separation (SB-CS) offers a path toward increasingly efficient light-harvesting technologies. This process plays a central role in the first step of photosynthesis, in which the dimeric "special pair" of the photosynthetic reaction center enters a coherent SB-CS state after photoexcitation. Previous research on SB-CS in both biological and synthetic chromophore dimers has focused on increasing the efficiency of light-driven processes. In a chromophore dimer undergoing SB-CS, the energy of the radical ion pair product is nearly isoenergetic with that of the lowest excited singlet (S 1 ) state of the dimer. This means that very little energy is lost from the absorbed photon. In principle, the relatively high energy electron and hole generated by SB-CS within the chromophore dimer can each be transferred to adjacent charge acceptors to extend the lifetime of the electron-hole pair, which can increase the efficiency of solar energy conversion. To investigate this possibility, we have designed a bis-perylenediimide cyclophane ( m PDI 2 ) covalently linked to a secondary electron donor, peri -xanthenoxanthene (PXX) and a secondary electron acceptor, partially fluorinated naphthalenediimide (FNDI). Upon selective photoexcitation of m PDI 2 , transient absorption spectroscopy shows that m PDI 2 undergoes SB-CS, followed by two secondary charge transfer reactions to generate a PXX •+ - m PDI 2 -FNDI •- radical ion pair having a nearly 3 µs lifetime. The role of chirality in determining the spin dynamics of photoinduced electron transfer in donor-acceptor molecules remains an open question. Although chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) has been demonstrated in molecules bound to substrates, experimental information about whether this process influences spin dynamics in the molecules themselves is lacking. Here we used time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy to show that CISS strongly influences the spin dynamics of isolated covalent donor-chiral bridge-acceptor (D-Bχ-A) molecules in which selective photoexcitation of D is followed by two rapid, sequential electron-transfer events to yield D •+ -Bχ-A •- . Exploiting this phenomenon affords the possibility of using chiral molecular building blocks to control electron spin states in quantum information applications.

Insects have adapted to a multitude of environmental conditions, including the presence of xenobiotic noxious substances. Environmental microorganisms, particularly rich on ephemeral resources, employ these noxious chemicals in a chemical warfare against predators and competitors, driving co-evolutionary adaptations. In order to analyse how environmental microbes may be driving such evolutionary adaptations, we experimentally evolved Drosophila melanogaster populations by exposing larvae to the toxin-producing mould Aspergillus nidulans that infests the flies' breeding substrate. To disentangle the effects of the mycotoxin Sterigmatocystin from other substrate modifications inflicted by the mould, we used the following four selection regimes: (i) control without fungus, (ii) A. nidulans wild type, (iii) a mutant of A. nidulans ΔlaeA with impaired toxin production, (iv) synthetic Sterigmatocystin. Experimental evolution was carried out in five independent D. melanogaster populations each, for a total of 11 generations. We further combined our evolution experiment with transcriptome analysis to identify evolutionary shifts in gene expression due to the selection regimes and mould confrontation. Populations that evolved in presence of the toxin-producing mould or the pure mycotoxin rapidly adapted to the respective conditions and showed higher viability in subsequent confrontations. Yet, mycotoxin-selected populations had no advantage in A. nidulans wild type confrontation. Moreover, distinctive changes in gene expression related to the selection-regime contrast were only associated with the toxin-producing-fungus regime and comprised a narrow set of genes. In decomposer systems, fungi show diverse phenotypic responses to volatile organic compounds of microbial origin (volatiles). The mechanisms underlying such responses and their consequences for the performance and ecological success of fungi in a multitrophic community context have rarely been tested explicitly. We used a laboratory-based approach in which we investigated a tripartite yeast-mold-insect model decomposer system to understand the possible influence of yeast-borne volatiles on the ability of a chemically defended mold fungus to resist insect damage. The volatile-exposed mold phenotype (1) did not exhibit protein kinase A-dependent morphological differentiation, (2) was more susceptible to insect foraging activity, and (3) had reduced insecticidal properties. Additionally, the volatile-exposed phenotype was strongly impaired in secondary metabolite formation and unable to activate "chemical defense" genes upon insect damage. These results suggest that volatiles can be ecologically important factors that affect the chemical-based combative abilities of fungi against insect antagonists and, consequently, the structure and dynamics of decomposer communities.

Chemical warfare including insecticidal secondary metabolites is a well-known strategy for environmental microbes to monopolize a food source. Insects in turn have evolved behavioural and physiological defences to eradicate or neutralize the harmful microorganisms. We studied the defensive repertoire of insects in this interference competition by combining behavioural and developmental assays with whole-transcriptome time-series analysis. Confrontation with the toxic filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans severely reduced the survival of Drosophila melanogaster larvae. Nonetheless, the larvae did not behaviourally avoid the fungus, but aggregated at it. Confrontation with fungi strongly affected larval gene expression, including many genes involved in detoxification (e.g., CYP, GST and UGT genes) and the formation of the insect cuticle (e.g., Tweedle genes). The most strongly upregulated genes were several members of the insect-specific gene family Osiris, and CHK-kinase-like domains were over-represented. Immune responses were not activated, reflecting the competitive rather than pathogenic nature of the antagonistic interaction. Background: Fungi are key dietary resources for many animals. Fungi, in consequence, have evolved sophisticated physical and chemical defences for repelling and impairing fungivores. Expression of such defences may entail costs, requiring diversion of energy and nutrients away from fungal growth and reproduction. Inducible resistance that is mounted after attack by fungivores may allow fungi to circumvent the potential costs of defence when not needed. However, no information exists on whether fungi display inducible resistance. We combined organism and fungal gene expression approaches to investigate whether fungivory induces resistance in fungi., Methodology/principal Findings: Here we show that grazing by larval fruit flies, Drosophila melanogaster, induces resistance in the filamentous mould, Aspergillus nidulans, to subsequent feeding by larvae of the same insect. Larval grazing triggered the expression of various putative fungal resistance genes, including the secondary metabolite master regulator gene laeA. Compared to the severe pathological effects of wild type A. nidulans, which led to 100% insect mortality, larval feeding on a laeA loss-of-function mutant resulted in normal insect development. Whereas the wild type fungus recovered from larval grazing, larvae eradicated the chemically deficient mutant. In contrast, mutualistic dietary yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, reached higher population densities when exposed to Drosophila larval feeding., Conclusions/significance: Our study presents novel evidence that insect grazing is capable of inducing resistance to further grazing in a filamentous fungus. This phenotypic shift in resistance to fungivory is accompanied by changes in the expression of genes involved in signal transduction, epigenetic regulation and secondary metabolite biosynthesis pathways. Depending on reciprocal insect-fungus fitness consequences, fungi may be selected for inducible resistance to maintain high fitness in fungivore-rich habitats. Induced fungal defence responses thus need to be included if we wish to have a complete conception of animal-fungus co-evolution, fungal gene regulation, and multitrophic interactions.

Background: Fungal secondary metabolites have been suggested to function as chemical defenses against insect antagonists, i.e. predators and competitors. Because insects and fungi often compete for dead organic material, insects may achieve protection against fungi by reducing sensitivity to fungal chemicals. This, in turn, may lead to increased resistance allowing insects better to suppress the spread of antagonistic but non-pathogenic microbes in their habitat. However, it remains controversial whether fungal toxins serve as a chemical shield that selects for insects that are less sensitive to toxins, and hence favors the evolution of insect resistance against microbial competitors., Results: To examine the relationship between the ability to survive competition with toxic fungi, sensitivity to fungal toxins and resistance, we created fungal-selected (FS) replicated insect lines by exposing Drosophila melanogaster larvae to the fungal competitor Aspergillus nidulans over 26 insect generations. Compared to unselected control lines (UC), larvae from the FS lines had higher survival rates in the presence of A. nidulans indicating selection for increased protection against the fungal antagonist. In line with our expectation, FS lines were less susceptible to the A. nidulans mycotoxin Sterigmatocystin. Of particular interest is that evolved protection against A. nidulans and Sterigmatocytin was not correlated with increased insect survival in the presence of other fungi and mycotoxins. We found no evidence that FS lines were better at suppressing the expansion of fungal colonies but observed a trend towards a less detrimental effect of FS larvae on fungal growth., Conclusion: Antagonistic but non-pathogenic fungi favor insect variants better protected against the fungal chemical arsenal. This highlights the often proposed but experimentally underexplored importance of secondary metabolites in driving animal-fungus interactions. Instead of enhanced resistance, insect larvae tend to have evolved increased tolerance of the fungal competitor. Future studies should examine whether sensitivity to allelopathic microbial metabolites drives a trade-off between resistance and tolerance in insect external defense.

Competition between microorganisms and arthropods has been shown to be an important ecological interaction determining animal development and spatial distribution patterns in saprophagous communities. In fruit-inhabiting Drosophila, variation in insect developmental success is not only determined by species-specific effects of various noxious filamentous fungi but, as suggested by an earlier study, also by additive genetic variation in the ability to successfully withstand the negative impact of the fungi. If this variation represents a direct adaptive response to the degree to which insect breeding substrates are infested with harmful fungi, genetic variation for successful development in the presence of fungi could be maintained by variation in infestation of resource patches with fungi. We selected for the ability to resist the negative influence of mould by maintaining replicated Drosophila melanogaster populations on substrates infested with Aspergillus nidulans. After five cycles of exposure to the fungus during the larval stage, the selected populations were compared with unselected control populations regarding adult survival and reproduction to reveal an evolved resistance against the fungal competitor. On fungus-infested larval feeding substrates, emerged adults from mould-selected populations had higher survival rates and higher early fecundity than the control populations. In the unselected populations, females had higher mortality rates than males, and a high proportion of both females and males appeared to be unable to lay eggs or fertilise eggs, respectively. When larvae developed on non-infested food we found indications of a loss of resistance to abiotic and starvation stress in the adult stage in flies from the selected populations. This suggests that there are costs associated with an increase in resistance against the microbial competitor. We discuss the underlying mechanisms that might have selected for increased resistance against harmful fungi.
