Abstract

The accuracy of reaction theories used to extract properties of exotic nuclei from scattering experiments is often unknown or not quantified, but of utmost importance when, e.g., constraining the equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter from observables as the neutron-skin thickness. In order to test the Glauber multiple-scattering model, the total interaction cross section of Image 1 on carbon targets was measured at initial beam energies of 400, 550, 650, 800, and 1000 MeV/nucleon. The measurements were performed during the first experiment of the newly constructed R3B (Reaction with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) experiment after the start of FAIR Phase-0 at the GSI/FAIR facility with beam energies of 400, 550, 650, 800, and 1000 MeV/nucleon. The combination of the large-acceptance dipole magnet GLAD and a newly designed and highly efficient Time-of-Flight detector enabled a precise transmission measurement with several target thicknesses for each initial beam energy with an experimental uncertainty of ±0.4%. A comparison with the Glauber model revealed a discrepancy of around 3.1% at higher beam energies, which will serve as a crucial baseline for the model-dependent uncertainty in future fragmentation experiments.

Abstract

Abstract After its successful campaign of measurements beyond the Polar Arctic Circle, the PolarquEEEst experiment measured the cosmic charged particle rate at sea level in a latitude interval between 35 $$^{\circ }$$ ∘ N and 82 $$^{\circ }$$ ∘ N. In this paper, these measurements are described and the corresponding results are discussed.

Abstract

Abstract The eruption of the Hunga-Tonga volcano in the South Pacific Ocean on January 15, 2022, at about 4:15 UTC, generated a violent explosion, which created atmospheric pressure disturbances in the form of Rayleigh-Lamb waves detected all over the globe. Here we discuss the observation of the Hunga-Tonga shock-wave performed at the Ny-Ålesund Research Station on the Spitsbergen island, by the detectors of the PolarquEEEst experiment and their ancillary sensors. Online pressure data as well as the results of dedicated offline analysis are presented and discussed in details. Results include wave arrival times, wave amplitude measurements and wave velocity calculation. We observed five passages of the shock wave with a significance larger than 3 $$\sigma$$ σ and an amplitude up to 1 hPa. The average propagation velocity resulted to be (308 ± 0.6) m/s. Possible effects of the atmospheric pressure variation associated with the shock-wave multiple passages on the cosmic-ray rate at ground level are also investigated. We did not find any significant evidence of this effect.

Abstract

Proper detection of neutrons and charged particles is motivated by the recent efforts to construct new facilities for radioactive ion beams (RIBs) worldwide. Detection of neutrons is an important opportunity to improve our understanding of nuclear spectroscopy and reaction dynamics, with the possibility of constraining theoretical models of the nuclear equation of state (NEoS) and investigating in-medium nuclear interactions. This topic also has important implications in the study of astrophysical objects, such as neutron stars. In this work, the state-of-the-art of Neutron Array for Correlation Studies (NArCoS), a new hodoscope for neutron and charged particles under construction in Catania (INFN), is briefly reviewed.

Abstract

An investigation plan of different clustering and molecular states in neutron rich isotopes of Lithium, Beryllium, Boron and Carbon, in the context of an experimental campaign at INFN-Laboratori Nazionali del Sud, is presented. High statistics and new information on known states and study on new states will be possible thanks to the high intensities available for the exotic beams, delivered by the FRAISE facility and thanks to the opportunity of using very performing experimental apparatus, as well as the detectors CHIMERA, FARCOS, and NArCOS. Among these, the new hodoscope NArCOS, by detecting with high efficiency neutrons and providing high energy and angular resolutions, will allow also a precise study of reaction channels characterized by neutron emission.

Abstract

At the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud of INFN (INFN-LNS) in Catania, the construction of the new Radioactive Ion Beams (RIBs) facility FRAISE (FRAgment In-flight SEparator) has reached its ending phase. The facility uses the in-flight technique based on a primary beam fragmentation impinging on light Be or C targets. FRAISE makes use of light and medium mass primary beams, having power up to ≈ 2–3 kW, leading to RIBs, whose intensities vary in the range of ≈ 103–107 pps, for nuclei far from and close to the stability valley, respectively. FRAISE aims at providing high-intensity and high-quality RIBs for nuclear physics experiments, also serving to interdisciplinary research areas, such as medical physics. Critical aspects for high-quality beams are the tuning and transport, representing time-consuming processes and requiring dedicated diagnostics and tagging devices measuring many features of RIBs. Some of these devices should be capable to operate in radioactively activated environments because of the expected 2 kW beam lost in the dipole after the production target. Due to its peculiar robustness to radioactive damage, Silicon Carbide (SiC) technology has been considered for the detection layer. In this view, an R&D campaign has been started aiming at developing the FRAISE facility, the new diagnostics system, and a new tagging device, the latter of which will be useful for the CHIMERA multidetector beamline. In this paper, we discuss the status and the perspectives of the facility with a focus on the RIBs opportunities.

Abstract

The study of heavy-ion collisions in the Fermi energy domain (20 MeV/nucleon < E/A < 100 MeV/nucleon) is a fundamental research topic in modern nuclear physics. In the case of semi-peripheral collisions, the Fermi energy regime is characterized by the formation of a transient, neck-like structure that connects a projectile-like fragment (PLF) with a target-like fragment (TLF). The neck structure represents a precursor of the fireball which is a typical overlap of participating nucleons at relativistic energies (E/A> 200 MeV/nucleon). It undergoes an expansion phase in a short time scale of the order of 100 fm/c with the formation of a low-density region of nuclear matter, therefore favoring the clusterization of intermediate mass fragments (IMFs) of atomic number Z (typically) less than 20. Particular emphasis is given to some relevant results obtained by the CHIMERA collaboration in the last decade, regarding the time scale of the production mechanisms of the intermediate mass fragments in neck fragmentation and their neutron enrichment.

Abstract

Abstract This paper describes the simulation framework of the extreme energy events (EEE) experiment. EEE is a network of cosmic muon trackers, each made of three multi-gap resistive plate chambers (MRPC), able to precisely measure the absolute muon crossing time and the muon integrated angular flux at the ground level. The response of a single MRPC and the combination of three chambers have been implemented in a GEANT4-based framework (GEMC) to study the telescope response. The detector geometry, as well as details about the surrounding materials and the location of the telescopes have been included in the simulations in order to realistically reproduce the experimental set-up of each telescope. A model based on the latest parametrization of the cosmic muon flux has been used to generate single muon events. After validating the framework by comparing simulations to selected EEE telescope data, it has been used to determine detector parameters not accessible by analysing experimental data only, such as detection efficiency, angular and spatial resolution.

Abstract

Abstract The goal of the PolarquEEEst experiment was to measure the cosmic charged particle rate at latitudes greater than 66$$^{\circ }$$ ∘ N, where no systematic and accurate measurements at sea level have ever been performed. A latitude range well above the Arctic Circle was explored on board of a sailboat, up to the unprecedented northernmost value of $$82^{\circ }07^{\prime }$$ 82∘07′ N. In this paper a description of the experimental set-up is reported, then the procedures for calibration and data analysis are described in detail. The results show that the rate measured in this latitude range stays constant within a novel accuracy of $$\pm 1$$ ±1 %.

Abstract

The excitation of the Pygmy Dipole Resonance (PDR) in the 68Ni nucleus, above the neutron emission threshold, via an isoscalar probe has been observed for the first time. The excitation has been produced in reactions where a 68Ni beam, obtained by the fragmentation of a 70Zn primary beam at INFN-LNS, impinged on a 12C target. The γ-ray decay was detected using the CsI(Tl) detectors of the CHIMERA multidetector sphere. The 68Ni isotope as well as other heavy ion fragments were detected using the FARCOS array. The population of the PDR was evidenced by comparing the detected γ-ray energy spectra with statistical code calculations. The isotopic resolution of the detection system allows also to directly compare neutron decay channels with the 68Ni channel, better evidencing the PDR decay response function. This comparison allows also the extraction of the PDR cross section and the relative γ-ray angular distribution. The measured γ-ray angular distribution confirms the E1 character of the transition. The γ decay cross section for the excitation of the PDR was measured to be 0.32 mb with a 18% of statistical error. Keywords: Pygmy Dipole Resonance, Unstable nuclei, Isoscalar probe

Abstract

High energy gamma-rays from the 116Sn + 24Mg reaction at 23A MeV were measured using the MEDEA detector at LNS – INFN Catania. Combining this new data with previous measurements yields a detailed view of the quenching of the Giant Dipole Resonance as a function of excitation energy in nuclei of mass A in the range 120÷132. The transition towards the disappearance of the dipole strength, which occurs around 230 MeV excitation energy, appears to be remarkably sharp. Current phenomenological models give qualitative explanations for the quenching but cannot reproduce its detailed features. 12. Palate perforation differentiates cocaine-induced midline destructive lesions from granulomatosis with polyangiitis

Abstract

L abuso di cocaina può talvolta causare lesioni destruenti della struttura osteocartilaginea del naso, dei seni paranasali, del palato, con caratteristiche cliniche che ricordano altre patologie sistemiche associate a lesioni necrotizzanti centrofacciali. La diagnosi differenziale tra lesioni destruenti della linea mediana indotte da cocaina (CIMDL) e granulomatosi associata a poliangioite (GPA) può essere complessa, in particolare se il paziente non ammette labuso di sostanze. 10 pazienti con CIMDL e perforazione palatale sono stati trattati presso la nostra Unità Operativa tra il 2002 ed il 2015. Tutti i casi sono stati sottoposti ad endoscopia nasale, TC o RMN del massiccio facciale ed Anca test. In 8 casi è stata effettuata anche la biopsia nasale. Contestualmente è stata eseguita una revisione della letteratura presente su PubMed riguardante i casi di perforazione palatale in pazienti affetti da CIMDL e GPA. Tutti i 10 pazienti oggetto dello studio presentavano perforazione palatale e distruzione dei turbinati inferiori; inoltre 7 pazienti presentavano perforazione del palato duro , 2 pazienti perforazione del palato molle ed 1 paziente perforazione di entrambi. Gli Anca test erano negativi in 8 pazienti e positivi in 2, sia per C-Anca sia per P-Anca. La revisione della letteratura edita in lingua inglese ha evidenziato perforazioni palatali in 5 pazienti affetti da GPA e in 73 pazienti affetti da CIMDL. La presenza di perforazione palatale in pazienti con lesioni destruenti della linea mediana può rappresentare un nuovo marker clinico a favore delle CIMDL nella diagnosi differenziale con GPA.

Abstract

Object. Aim of our study was to establish some peculiar features of Ménière's Disease (MD) in a group of elderly MD patients, in which the first vertigo spell happened when over 65 years old. Material and Methods. We analyzed a group of 73 younger than 65-years-old and a group of 30 elderly MD patients. All patients underwent a neurotological evaluation, an anamnestic evaluation including a lifetime history of migraine, and blood withdrawal for autoantibody screening. Results. Some differences were found between elderly and younger MD patients. Elderly MD patients presented a higher prevalence of Tumarkin attacks and a lower prevalence of lifetime history of migraine; moreover, they presented a faster develop of hearing loss and vertigo spells than a subgroup of 32 younger patients matched for the duration of illness. Conclusions. Some clinical features of MD in elderly have been pointed out. Particularly, the lower rate of migrainous history and positivity for autoantibodies often associated with MD, in our opinion, support the hypothesis of a vascular disorder acting as a predisposing factor for MD in elderly.

Abstract

Current research in High Energy Cosmic Ray Physics touches on fundamental questions regarding the origin of cosmic rays, their composition, the acceleration mechanisms, and their production. Unambiguous measurements of the energy spectra and of the composition of cosmic rays at the "knee" region could provide some of the answers to the above questions. So far only ground based observations, which rely on sophisticated models describing high energy interactions in the earth's atmosphere, have been possible due to the extremely low particle rates at these energies. A calorimetry based space experiment that could provide not only flux measurements but also energy spectra and particle identification, would certainly overcome some of the uncertainties of ground based experiments. Given the expected particle fluxes, a very large acceptance is needed to collect a sufficient quantity of data, in a time compatible with the duration of a space mission. This in turn, contrasts with the lightness and compactness requirements for space based experiments. We present a novel idea in calorimetry which addresses these issues whilst limiting the mass and volume of the detector. In this paper we report on a four year R&D program where we investigated materials, coatings, photo-sensors, Front End electronics, and mechanical structures with the aim of designing a high performance, high granularity calorimeter with the largest possible acceptance. Details are given of the design choices, component characterisation, and of the construction of a sizeable prototype (Calocube) which has been used in various tests with particle beams.

Abstract

Several modern applications of radiation processing require compact and self-contained electron accelerators. To match these requirements, a 5 MeV, 1 kW electron linac has been developed at the Dipartimento di Fisica (Università di Messina) and will be described in this paper. This standing wave accelerator, driven by a 3 GHz, 2.5 MW magnetron generator, has an autofocusing structure and will be used to study several applications of radiation processing.

Abstract

The SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant of concern (VoC) and its sublineages contain 31-36 mutations in spike and escape neutralization by most therapeutic antibodies. In a pseudovirus neutralization assay, 66 of the nearly 400 candidate therapeutics in the Coronavirus Immunotherapeutic Consortium (CoVIC) panel neutralize Omicron and multiple Omicron sublineages. Among natural immunoglobulin Gs (IgGs), especially those in the receptor-binding domain (RBD)-2 epitope community, nearly all Omicron neutralizers recognize spike bivalently, with both antigen-binding fragments (Fabs) simultaneously engaging adjacent RBDs on the same spike. Most IgGs that do not neutralize Omicron bind either entirely monovalently or have some (22%-50%) monovalent occupancy. Cleavage of bivalent-binding IgGs to Fabs abolishes neutralization and binding affinity, with disproportionate loss of activity against Omicron pseudovirus and spike. These results suggest that VoC-resistant antibodies overcome mutagenic substitution via avidity. Abstract

The existence of independent, yet time correlated, Extensive Air Showers (EAS) has been discussed over the past years, with emphasis on possible physical mechanisms that could justify their observation. The detector network of the Extreme Energy Events (EEE) Collaboration, with its approximately 60 cosmic ray telescopes deployed over the Italian territory, has the potential to search for such events, employing different analysis strategies. In this paper, we have analyzed a set of EEE data, corresponding to an approximately five month observation period, searching for multi-coincidence events among several far telescopes, within a time window of 1 ms. Events with up to 12 coincident telescopes have been observed. Results were compared to expectations from a random distribution of events and discussed with reference to the relativistic dust grain hypothesis.

Abstract

Adeno-associated virus (AAV) is one of the most commonly used vectors for gene therapy, and the applications for AAV-delivered therapies are numerous. However, the current state of technology is limited by the low efficiency with which most AAV vectors transduce skeletal muscle tissue. We demonstrate that vector efficiency can be enhanced by modifying the AAV capsid with a peptide that binds a receptor highly expressed in muscle tissue. When an insulin-mimetic peptide, S519, previously characterized for its high affinity to insulin receptor (IR), was inserted into the capsid, the AAV9 transduction efficiency of IR-expressing cell lines as well as differentiated primary human muscle cells was dramatically enhanced. This vector also exhibited efficient transduction of mouse muscle in vivo, resulting in up to 18-fold enhancement over AAV9. Owing to its superior transduction efficiency in skeletal muscle, we named this vector “enhanced AAV9” (eAAV9). We also found that the modification enhanced the transduction efficiency of several other AAV serotypes. Together, these data show that AAV transduction of skeletal muscle can be improved by targeting IR. They also show the broad utility of this modular strategy and suggest that it could also be applied to next-generation vectors that have yet to be engineered., Graphical Abstract, Skeletal muscle may be used as a “factory” for the production of therapeutic proteins for systemic distribution. Abstract

Evolution in similar environments often leads to convergence of behavioral and anatomical traits. A classic example of convergent trait evolution is the reduced traits that characterize many cave animals: reduction or loss of pigmentation and eyes. While these traits have evolved many times, relatively little is known about whether these traits repeatedly evolve through the same or different molecular and developmental mechanisms. The small freshwater fish, Astyanax mexicanus, provides an opportunity to investigate the repeated evolution of cave traits. A. mexicanus exists as two forms, a sighted, surface-dwelling form and at least 29 populations of a blind, cave-dwelling form that initially develops eyes that subsequently degenerate. We compared eye morphology and the expression of eye regulatory genes in developing surface fish and two independently evolved cavefish populations, Pachón and Molino. We found that many of the previously described molecular and morphological alterations that occur during eye development in Pachón cavefish are also found in Molino cavefish. However, for many of these traits, the Molino cavefish have a less severe phenotype than Pachón cavefish. Further, cave-cave hybrid fish have larger eyes and lenses during early development compared with fish from either parental population, suggesting that some different changes underlie eye loss in these two populations. Together, these data support the hypothesis that these two cavefish populations evolved eye loss independently, yet through some of the same developmental and molecular mechanisms.

Abstract

A muon telescope of the Extreme Energy Events (EEE) Project is made by 3 Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPC). The MRPCs have been fluxed so far with a standard mixture composed by 98% C2H2F4 and 2% SF6, that are GreenHouse Gases (GHG) phasing out of production. In order to reduce GHG emissions, without affecting MRPC excellent performance, the EEE Collaboration is currently studying alternative mixtures environmentally and economically sustainable. MRPCs performance with new gas mixtures, in terms of resolution (time and space), efficiency, tracking capability and stability, are currently under investigation and will be briefly described in this contribution.

Abstract

The whole Extreme Energy Events (EEE) array is composed of 61 telescopes installed in Italian High Schools, built and operated by students and teachers, constantly supervised by researchers. The muon telescope of the EEE Project is made by 3 Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPC). The unconventional working sites are a unique test field for checking the robustness and the low-ageing features of the MRPC technology for particle tracking and timing purposes. The MRPCs are fluxed with a standard mixture (98% C2H2F4 - 2% SF6) of greenhouse gases (GHG) phasing out of production. The EEE Collaboration is currently studying alternative mixtures environmentally and economically sustainable. The EEE Collaboration actions to reduce the Global Warming Potential (GWP) in the MRPC array of the EEE experiment are progressing.

Abstract

The Extreme Energy Events Project (EEE) represents a breakthrough in outreach activities in Cosmic Ray Physics: high school students are protagonists of an experiment to measure Extensive Air Showers at ground. They start their experience at CERN with the construction of the three high performing Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers constituting the telescope that is then installed inside their school; then they take care of the telescope operation and data analysis. Presently 60 telescopes are installed in Italy and, since 2014, coordinated data taking have been performed during each school year providing a huge amount of candidate muon tracks. Every year hundreds of students and teachers are involved in the activities directly correlated to EEE. The COVID-19 pandemic has strongly affected the experimental activities of the EEE Project. However in the last two years the online activities were strengthened, with an intense programme of collaboration meetings, masterclasses, and hugely successful topical seminars. Starting from the fall of 2021, the improvement of epidemiological situation made it possible to start some of the EEE activities in presence.

Abstract

The search for long-range correlations among air showers is one of the main goal of the Extreme Energy Events (EEE) Project. The existence of such events has only been supposed theoretically through several physical mechanisms, the most convincing being the so-called GZ effect, based on the photodisintegration of a heavy primary nucleus in the solar field. Even with a large detector coverage, current rate expectations are of few events per year. To measure time correlations among distant air showers, sparse arrays of detection stations spread over large areas are needed. A very limited number of experimental setups can perform this measurement and few experimental results have been reported over the past years. Started in 2004 the EEE project is a network of about 60 cosmic muons tracking telescopes made by 3 wide area Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPCs), sensitive to the direction of incident charged cosmic particles. The telescopes are distributed over the whole Italian territory, thus making the EEE array an ideal tool for the detection of long-range time correlations among extensive air showers. In this paper we will describe the analysis strategies adopted to search for such rare correlation events, together with the results obtained analysing the full statistics collected by the EEE telescopes.

Abstract

Retinal ganglion cells can be classified into more than 40 distinct subtypes, whether by functional classification or transcriptomics. The examination of these subtypes in relation to their physiology, projection patterns, and circuitry would be greatly facilitated through the identification of specific molecular identifiers for the generation of transgenic mice. Advances in single cell transcriptomic profiling have enabled the identification of molecular signatures for cellular subtypes that are only rarely found. Therefore, we used single cell profiling combined with hierarchical clustering and correlate analyses to identify genes expressed in distinct populations of Parvalbumin-expressing cells and functionally classified RGCs. RGCs were manually isolated based either upon fluorescence or physiological distinction through cell-attached recordings. Microarray hybridization and RNA-Sequencing were employed for the characterization of transcriptomes and in situ hybridization was utilized to further characterize gene candidate expression. Gene candidates were identified based upon cluster correlation, as well as expression specificity within physiologically distinct classes of RGCs. Further, we identified Prph, Ctxn3, and Prkcq as potential candidates for ipRGC classification in the murine retina. The use of these genes, or one of the other newly identified subset markers, for the generation of a transgenic mouse would enable future studies of RGC-subtype specific function, wiring, and projection.

33. Palatal prosthetic rehabilitation in patients affected by cocaine-induced midline destructive lesions

Abstract

Cocaine is one of the most popular illicit drugs in Europe and cocaine-induced midline destructive lesions (CIMDL) represent a rare but destructive consequence of its intranasal use. The extent of lesions can vary remarkably and may include palate perforations with consequent oronasal reflux and hypernasal speech. The therapeutic options encompass surgery, with local and distant flaps, and prosthetic rehabilitation with palatal obturators. We retrospectively reviewed a case series of 6 patients affected by palatal perforation as part of CIMDL, who were treated with a dental or implant-retained palatal obturator at San Raffaele Dentistry Department between 2015 and 2020. In addition, we reviewed the available literature on CIMDL and the prosthetic rehabilitation of palatal perforations in this context. The most frequent symptoms reported were hypernasal speech, oro-nasal reflux, halitosis, and difficulty in interpersonal relationships. Palatal obturators were always successful in the relief of the majority of symptoms, but the duration of the benefit was strongly related to progression of the lesion, and in some cases a close follow-up and continuous modifications of the prosthesis were necessary. In conclusion prosthetic approach is a valid option for the symptomatic relief in CIMDL-related palate perforation. Nevertheless, the short-lasting efficacy for patients with active disease can be the reason for unsatisfactory results.

Abstract

Due to their efficiency, tracking capabilities and long-term operational conditions, Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPC) may be used in a stable location in coincidence with additional detectors fixed to other parts of a civil building, to detect relative displacements of different parts of the building due to long term deformations of the structure. In this contribution we report the results of two different measurements carried out in the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Catania (with three floors above the ground and an underground basement), using one of the MRPC telescopes of the Extreme Energy Events project, in coincidence with two scintillator-based muon telescopes located in various positions inside the building. Experimental results obtained by these measurements campaigns over a period of about three months are reported, together with a discussion about the performance of the technique. The sensitivity of the method is also discussed by means of Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract

The direct observation of high-energy cosmic rays, up to the PeV energy region, will increasingly rely on highly performing calorimeters, and the physics performance will be primarily determined by their geometrical acceptance and energy resolution. Thus, it is extremely important to optimize their geometrical design, granularity and absorption depth, with respect to the totalmass of the apparatus, which is amongst the most important constraints for a space mission. CaloCube is an homogeneous calorimeter whose basic geometry is cubic and isotropic, obtained by filling the cubic volume with small cubic scintillating crystals. In this way it is possible to detect particles arriving from every direction in space, thus maximizing the acceptance. This design summarizes a three-year R&D activity, aiming to both optimize and study the full-scale performance of the calorimeter, in the perspective of a cosmic-ray space mission, and investigate a viable technical design by means of the construction of several sizable prototypes. A large scale prototype, made of a mesh of 5x5x18 CsI(Tl) crystals, has been constructed and tested on high-energy particle beams at CERN SPS accelerator. Abstract

L’emergenza pandemica ha riproposto con forza il tema dei diritti fondamentali e dell’intervento pubblico per la loro garanzia, che deve essere ricollegato ad una necessaria rilettura della sovranità, finalmente disancorata dall’ancoraggio esclusivo ed assorbente alla rappresentanza popolare. La sovranità, come delineata dalla Costituzione italiana, significa anche funzionalizzazione dell’autorità ai diritti della persona e, quindi, sguardo non neutrale e proattivo rispetto alla necessaria garanzia dei diritti fondamentali. Da questa premessa concettuale, che ha innervato il dibattito promosso da PA Persona e Amministrazione, i componenti della Direzione della Rivista hanno avviato e promosso un’analisi della reazione europea e nazionale all’emergenza pandemica nella prospettiva tematica delle disuguaglianze ingiuste e dell’individuazione degli strumenti giuridici per il loro superamento, a partire dall'occasione offerta dal PNRR.

Abstract

This paper describes the simulation framework of the Extreme Energy Events (EEE) experiment. EEE is a network of cosmic muon trackers, each made of three Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPC), able to precisely measure the absolute muon crossing time and the muon integrated angular flux at the ground level. The response of a single MRPC and the combination of three chambers have been implemented in a GEANT4-based framework (GEMC) to study the telescope response. The detector geometry, as well as details about the surrounding materials and the location of the telescopes have been included in the simulations in order to realistically reproduce the experimental set-up of each telescope. A model based on the latest parametrization of the cosmic muon flux has been used to generate single muon events. After validating the framework by comparing simulations to selected EEE telescope data, it has been used to determine detector parameters not accessible by analysing experimental data only, such as detection efficiency, angular and spatial resolution., Comment: 16 pages, 25 figures, 3 tables, submitted to EPJC

Abstract

The PolarquEEEst scientific programme consists in a series of measurements of the cosmic ray flux up to the highest latitudes, well beyond the Polar Article Circle. It started in Summer 2018, when one telescope for cosmic rays was installed on a sailboat leaving from North Iceland, to circumnavigate the Svalbard archipelago and land in Tromsø. It collected data up to 82N, measuring with unprecedented precision the charged particle rate at sea level in these regions. During Fall of the same year and Spring 2019 the PolarquEEEst programme continued with a series of measurements performed using the same detector, which took place first in Italy, with the southernmost point reached at Lampedusa, and then in Germany, with the goal to measure the dependence of cosmic charged particle rate with latitude. Then, in May 2019, the PolarquEEEst collaboration accomplished another important result, installing a cosmic ray observatory for the detection of secondary cosmic muons at Ny Alesund, at 79N, made of three independent identical detectors positioned a few hundred meters from each other, and synchronized in order to operate together as a network. This configuration allows high precision measurements never performed before at these latitudes on a long term, also interesting for their connection with environmental phenomena. Here the various missions will be presented, and the latest results from the measurements performed will be shown.

Abstract

The Extreme Energy Events (EEE) experiment, dedicated to the study of secondary cosmic rays, is arguably the largest detector system in the world implemented by Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers. The EEE network consists of 60 telescopes distributed over all the Italian territory; each telescope is made of three MRPCs and allows to reconstruct the trajectory of cosmic muons with high efficiency and optimal angular resolution. A distinctive feature of the EEE network is that almost all telescopes are housed in High Schools and managed by groups of students and teachers, who previously took care of their construction at CERN. This peculiarity is a big plus for the experiment, which combines the scientific relevance of its objectives with effective outreach activities. The unconventional location of the detectors, mainly in standard classrooms of school buildings, with heterogeneous maintenance conditions and without controlled temperature and dedicated power lines, is a unique test field to verify the robustness, the low aging characteristics and the long-lasting performance of MRPC technology for particle monitoring and timing. Finally, it is reported how the spatial resolution, efficiency, tracking capability and stability of these chambers behave in time., 9 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

It started in Summer 2018, when three telescopes made out of scintillators readout by SiPMs were built and installed in Italy, Norway and on a sailboat leaving from North Island, to circumnavigate the Svalbard archipelago and land in Tromsø. They collected data on a latitude range from 44° N up to 82° N, with a dense sampling of the Northernmost interval. The PolarquEEEst mission continued afterwards with a series of measurements in Italy, Southward reaching Lampedusa, and in Germany. In May 2019 the PolarquEEEst collaboration accomplished another important result, installing a cosmic ray observatory for the detection of secondary cosmic muons at Ny Alesund, at 79° N, made of three independent identical detectors positioned a few hundred meters from each other, and synchronized in order to operate together as a network. The configuration used will allow high precision measurements never performed before at these latitudes on a long term, also interesting for their connection with environmental phenomena. The network will also complement the existing stations for the detection of cosmic neutrons at the Svalbard archipelago, enlarging by far the physics scope that is possible to pursue in this field at this peculiar location. Here the various missions are presented, and some preliminary results from the measurements performed are shown.

Abstract

It is discussed the dynamics of Isospin equilibration in reactions involving the production of Intermediate Mass Fragment (IMF) in the mid-rapidity region. The investigation proceeds through the measurements of the reduced value of the total dipolar signal obtained from the measured velocities and charges of all fragments produced in the collision 48 Ca +27 Al at 40 MeV/nucleon. Preliminary experimental results, along with the comparison with CoMD-III model calculations for different density functionals related to the symmetry energy, are presented.

Abstract

International audience; The emission probability of Intermediate Mass Fragments (IMFs) in non-central reactions has been investigated in collisions of heavy $^{124}\hbox {Xe}$ projectiles with the two different medium-mass targets of $^{64}\hbox {Ni}$ and $^{64}\hbox {Zn}$ at the laboratory energy of 35 A MeV. The two colliding systems differ only for the target atomic number Z and, consequently, for the isospin N/Z ratio. The probability of IMFs emission from the projectile-like fragment has been measured, showing an enhancement of the IMFs emission for the neutron rich $^{64}\hbox {Ni}$ target. Most of the observed projectile break-up yield is associated with the production of only one IMF, that is, a quasi-binary splitting of projectile in two fragments in a broad range of charge asymmetry. For the events with one IMF, the relative contributions of the dynamical and statistical emissions have been evaluated. We find an enhancement of dynamical break-up probability for the neutron rich target with respect to the neutron poor one. The analysis suggests influence of the target isospin in inducing the dynamical break-up of projectile-like fragments. The new data have been also compared with previous published results of $^{112,124}\hbox {Sn}$ + $^{58,64}\hbox {Ni}$ systems, in order to disentangle between isospin effects against system-size effects on the emission probability. The comparisons between previous and new data suggest that the dynamical break-up is determined by the N/Z content of both projectile and target; for the cases here investigated, the influence of the system size on the dynamical emission probability can be excluded.

Abstract

The Extreme Energy Events (EEE) Project employs Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) for studying the secondary cosmic ray muons in Extensive Air Showers. The array consists of about 60 tracking detectors, sparse on Italian territory and at CERN. The MRPCs are flowed with a gas mixture based on $C_2H_2F_4$ and $SF_6$, both of which are fluorinated greenhouse gases with a high environmental impact on the atmosphere. Due to the restrictions imposed by the European Union, these gases are being phased out of production and their cost is largely increasing. The EEE Collaboration started a campaign to reduce the gas emission from its array with the aim of containing costs and decreasing the experiment global warming impact. One method is to reduce the gas rate in each EEE detector. Another is to develop a gas recirculation system, whose a first prototype has been installed at one of the EEE stations located at CERN. Jointly a parallel strategy is focused on searching for environmental friendly gas mixtures which are able to substitute the standard mixture without affecting the MRPC performance. Abstract

Cosmic ray muons are a penetrating component of extensive air showers created in the Earth atmosphere by the interaction of highly energetic primary particles, mostly protons, which continuously bombard our Planet. The secondary cosmic radiation is the result of the complex interplay between the production cross section and the interaction mechanisms with the atmosphere (including the energy loss, multiple scattering and particle decay). Cosmic muons have been considered since several decades as a powerful probe to exploit our environment, from muography of volcanoes to absorption radiography of possible hidden rooms inside large structures, such as Pyramids, to the detection of high-Z illicit nuclear materials inside containers and many other applications of social interest. This paper discusses the possibility to employ the Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPC) of the Extreme Energy Events (EEE) Project as muon tracking detectors to monitor the long term stability of civil buildings and structures when used in conjunction with additional detectors. For this application the average direction of the cosmic muon tracks passing through the MRPC telescope and an additional detector located some distance apart in the same building may be reconstructed with good precision and any small variation over long time acquisition periods may be monitored. The performance of such setup is discussed and experimental results from first coincidence measurements obtained with a 40 × 60 cm2 scintillator detector operated in the same building with one of the EEE telescopes, at about 15 m vertical distance from it, are presented. Simple Monte Carlo and GEANT simulations were also carried out to evaluate typical acceptance values for the operating conditions employed so far, to extrapolate to other geometrical configurations, and to evaluate multiple scattering effects.

Abstract

EEE is an extended cosmic ray observatory, covering more than 10 degrees in latitude and longitude. The relative distances between clusters of telescopes reached the 1200 km, allowing the search for rare long distance correlations between cosmic showers. On the other side each EEE telescope is capable of measuring the flux of secondary particles, opening to the study of low energy phenomena such as solar activity and Forbush decreases. An introduction to the observaotry and updates on the main scientific results are presented. Last updates on the searches for rare correlated showers, with a set of long distance correlation candidate events are also reported.

Abstract

The Extreme Energy Events (EEE) Project is mainly devoted to the study of the secondary cosmic ray radiation by using muon tracker telescopes made of three Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPC) each. The experiment consists of a telescope network mainly distributed across Italy, hosted in different building structures pertaining to high schools, universities and research centers. Therefore, the possibility to take into account the effects of these structures on collected data is important for the large physics programme of the project. A simulation tool, based on GEANT4 and using GEMC framework, has been implemented to take into account the muon interaction with EEE telescopes and to estimate the effects on data of the structures surrounding the experimental apparata.A dedicated event generator producing realistic muon distributions, detailed geometry and microscopic behavior of MRPCs have been included to produce experimental-like data. The comparison between simulated and experimental data, and the estimation of detector resolutions is here presented and discussed.
