Abstract

The joint evaluated fission and fusion nuclear data library 3.3 is described. New evaluations for neutron-induced interactions with the major actinides U , U and Pu , on Am and Na , Ni , Cr, Cu, Zr, Cd, Hf, W, Au, Pb and Bi are presented. It includes new fission yields, prompt fission neutron spectra and average number of neutrons per fission. In addition, new data for radioactive decay, thermal neutron scattering, gamma-ray emission, neutron activation, delayed neutrons and displacement damage are presented. JEFF-3.3 was complemented by files from the TENDL project. The libraries for photon, proton, deuteron, triton, helion and alpha-particle induced reactions are from TENDL-2017. The demands for uncertainty quantification in modeling led to many new covariance data for the evaluations. A comparison between results from model calculations using the JEFF-3.3 library and those from benchmark experiments for criticality, delayed neutron yields, shielding and decay heat, reveals that JEFF-3.3 performes very well for a wide range of nuclear technology applications, in particular nuclear energy., Acknowledgements The authors would like to thank all contributors to the JEFF project that shared their insights and provided their specific input for the present JEFF-3.3 evaluation and its immediate predecessors JEFF-3.2 and JEFF-3.1.2.

Abstract

Organizer: Argentinian Comis Nacl Energia Atomica; International audience; A new experiment was designed to measure the photon emission intensities in the decay of $^{103m}$Rh. The rhodium samples were activated in the ISIS experimental nuclear reactor at CEA Saclay. The procedure includes an absolute activity measurement by liquid scintillation counting using the Triple-to-Double Coincidence Ratio method, followed by X-ray spectrometry using a high-purity germanium detector to determine the photon emission intensities. The new result I$_x$ = 0.0825 (17)) is derived with a significant reduction of the uncertainty.

Abstract

International audience; The NUCLEIDE database provides comprehensive and accurate data recommended by the Decay Data Evaluation Project (DDEP). The module NUCLEIDE++, written in C++, and designed to work in conjunction with the GEANT4 Monte Carlo toolkit has been developed to simulate the complete decay scheme for a given radionuclide by randomly selecting the decay pathways, using data from NUCLEIDE. The nuclear de-excitation of the potential daughters can also be treated in the same run. The initial energies of the electron and positron in the case of beta-emitting radionuclides are sampled from spectra calculated with the BetaShape program developed at LNE-LNHB. The aim of this work is to propose to GEANT4 users the possibility to run with the recommended NUCLEIDE data and a more detailed model. The reliability of NUCLEIDE++ is shown by comparing the coincident particles cascades to the ones obtained with PENNUC and GEANT4.

Abstract

International audience; Palladium-103 is a radioisotope of interest in medical applications which is used in brachytherapy implants for the treatment of prostate cancer. It decays through electron capture to excited levels of $^{103}$Rh, and especially to the 39.756 keV metastable state. The half-life of $^{103}$Pd was measured by gamma-ray spectrometry on a HPGe detector on an aliquot of the diluted solution, for 50 days. The absolute photon emission intensities were obtained by gamma-ray spectrometry using a solution whose mass activity was obtained by liquid scintillation, using the TDCR method. The full-energy peak efficiency of the detectors were previously calibrated with LNE-LNHB standard sources. The 357-keV photon emission intensity per 100 disintegrations obtained is 0.02464(16), in perfect agreement with the tabulated data (0.0246 (6)), and with a reduced uncertainty. In addition, the emission intensities of five other gamma-rays was also derived with a significant reduction of the uncertainties.

Abstract

An IAEA coordinated research project that began in 2012 and ended in 2016 was primarily dedicated to the compilation, evaluation and recommendation of cross-section data for the production of medical radionuclides. One significant part of this work focused on diagnostic positron emitters. These particular studies consist of 69 reactions for direct and indirect or generator production of 44Sc(44Ti), 52mMn(52Fe), 52gMn, 55Co, 61Cu, 62Cu(62Zn), 66Ga, 68Ga(68Ge), 72As(72Se), 73Se, 76Br, 82Rb(82Sr), 82mRb, 86Y, 89Zr, 90Nb, 94mTc, 110mIn(110Sn), 118Sb(118Te), 120I, 122I(122Xe), 128Cs(128Ba), and 140Pr(140Nd) medical radionuclides. The resulting reference cross-section data were obtained from Pade fits to selected and corrected experimental data, and integral thick target yields were subsequently deduced. Uncertainties in the fitted results were estimated via a Pade least-squares method with the addition of a 4% assessed systematic uncertainty. Experimental data were also compared with theoretical predictions available from the TENDL-2015 and TENDL-2017 libraries. All of the numerical reference cross-section data with their corresponding uncertainties and deduced integral thick target yields are available on-line at the IAEA-NDS medical portal www-nds.iaea.org/medicalportal and also at the IAEA-NDS web page www-nds.iaea.org/medical/positron_emitters.html .

Abstract

International audience; Increasing interest in the treatment of human disease by means of targeted radionuclide-based therapies requires an accurate understanding of achievable yields and quantification of realisable degrees of purity. Important studies within a more extensive Coordinated Research Project of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA CRP) have included in-depth assessments and evaluations of all available measured cross-section data for ten nuclear reactions leading to the formation of $^{131}$Cs, $^{131}$Ba, $^{225}$Ac, $^{225}$Ra, $^{227}$Th, $^{227}$Ac, $^{230}$U and $^{230}$Pa for various on-going and proposed therapeutic applications in nuclear medicine. Equivalent studies were also undertaken of possible reactions to produce the $^{178}$W/low-spin $^{178m}$Ta generator system that has been clinically applied in diagnosis by means of SPECT - these particular cross-section studies and recommendations are included in this paper for completeness. All available measured data have been critically reviewed and assessed to produce statistically consistent datasets. Selected datasets have been fitted by a least-squares method with Padé approximations of variable order to evaluate the production cross sections and corresponding uncertainties. New measurements have been made in some instances, and reported data have been adjusted to accommodate new nuclear decay or monitor reaction data which altered the original reported quantities adversely. Insufficient measured data are available in many cases to permit a reliable evaluation of cross sections, and these instances are discussed. Recommended therapeutic radionuclide production reaction data and their uncertainties are available on the Web page of the IAEA Nuclear Data Section at www-nds.iaea.org/radionuclides/ and also at the IAEA medical portal www-ds.iaea.org/medportal/

Abstract

Since 2013, the radionuclide 223Ra is used in nuclear medicine to prepare radiopharmaceuticals for targeted radiotherapy. 223Ra is a member of the natural radioactive series of actinium and decays by alpha-particle emission, populating the excited levels of 219Rn. According to the 2011 nuclear decay data evaluation within the Decay Data Evaluation Project (DDEP), by V.P. Chechev, the half-life of 223Ra is (11.43 ± 0.03) days. The decay scheme is not considered as fully complete, because of the disagreement between the measured and calculated probabilities of some alpha-transitions and incomplete information on several gamma-ray transitions. New high quality measurements of 223Ra nuclear decay data were performed and numerous results were published since 2012 and, consequently, an updated nuclear decay data evaluation was undertaken, according to the DDEP procedures. The main results obtained, focusing on the recommended data improvements, are presented and discussed in this paper.

Abstract

International audience; Evaluated cross sections of beam-monitor reactions are expected to become the de-facto standard for cross-section measurements that are performed over a very broad energy range in accelerators in order to produce particular radionuclides for industrial and medical applications. The requirements for such data need to be addressed in a timely manner, and therefore an IAEA coordinated research project was launched in December 2012 to establish or improve the nuclear data required to characterise charged-particle monitor reactions. An international team was assembled to recommend more accurate cross-section data over a wide range of targets and projectiles, undertaken in conjunction with a limited number of measurements and more extensive evaluations of the decay data of specific radionuclides. Least-square evaluations of monitor-reaction cross sections including uncertainty quantification have been undertaken for charged-particle beams of protons, deuterons, 3 He- and 4 He-particles. Recommended beam monitor reaction data with their uncertainties are available at the IAEA-NDS medical portal www-nds.iaea.org/medical/monitor_reactions.html .

New time-of-flight measurements were performed and analyzed, and considerable effort was put into development of methods for analysis of spectrum averaged data and re-analysis of existing experimental data.

DDEP members have evaluated over 220 radionuclides, following an agreed upon methodology, including a peer review. Evaluations include all relevant parameters relating to the nuclear decay and the associated atomic processes. An important output of these evaluations are recommendations for new measurements, which can serve as a basis for future measurement programmes. The DDEP recommended data have recently been incorporated into the JEFF-3.3 Radioactive Decay Data Library. Other sources of nuclear data include 900 or so radionuclides converted from the Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF), 500 from two UK libraries (UKPADD6.12 and UKHEDD2.6), the IAEA Actinide Decay Data Library, with the remainder converted from the NUBASE evaluation of nuclear properties. Mean decay energies for a number of radionuclides determined from total absorption gamma-ray spectroscopy (TAGS) have also been included, as well as more recent European results from TAGS measurements performed at the University of Jyvaskyla by groups from the University of Valencia, Spain and SUBATECH, the University of Nantes, France.

Abstract

Organised under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency, comprehensive decay scheme evaluations for over eighty actinides and their decay products have been completed on the basis of detailed assessments of the available experimental data. However, despite the application of sound evaluation procedures, such work cannot replace the need to perform and access good quality measurements for adoption. This evaluation programme provided a means of quantifying the quality of the underlying data to ensure that well-focused recommendations could be made for future experimental decay-data studies.

Abstract

Recommended nuclear decay data for specific actinides are important in fuel-cycle studies for thermal and fast reactors and inventory studies for safeguards. Therefore, a programme of work was initiated in 2005 to improve the actinide decay data library of the International Atomic Energy Agency through the efforts of a Coordinated Research Project (CRP). The proposed contents of the new database are described, including the agreement to include additional actinides and a significant number of natural decay chain radionuclides. This work is on-going, and is estimated for completion in 2009/10.

Data measurements undertaken by various laboratories are evaluated by an international commission of experts (Decay Data Evaluation Project) coordinated by LNHB staff in order to establish a set of recommended decay scheme data. New nuclide evaluations are regularly added to our website, the Nucléide database, published in the BIPM-5 Monographie series and uploaded to our web application Laraweb, a dedicated tool for alpha and gamma spectrometry. The Mini Table of Radionuclides is produced from time-to-time with data extracted from our database. Various publications are described, along with new search criteria and decay scheme visualisation in Laraweb.

Abstract

The half-life of 240 Pu has been determined by measuring its growth in a 244 Cm source. A thin source of 244 Cm was prepared by an electromagnetic isotope separator for this measurement, and the daughter nuclide 240 Pu was allowed to grow for 32.7 yr. The alpha spectrum of the 244 Cm source was measured with silicon detectors and the ratio of the 240 Pu and 244 Cm activities was determined. From this ratio and the previously known half-life of 244 Cm ( 18.11 ± 0.03 yr ) , the half-life of 240 Pu was determined to be T 1 / 2 = 6545 ± 19 yr . This is in excellent agreement with the value of 6564 ± 11 yr recommended by the US Half-Life Evaluation Committee.

A Co-ordinated Research Project (CRP) entitled "Updated Decay Data Library for Actinides" was initiated in 2005 by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), with the primary aim of improving the quality of recommended decay data for actinides and their decay chains. Participants have attended two Research Coordination Meetings, and agreed on a list of important nuclides and evaluation methodologies to be adopted in work programmes dedicated to the preparation of a new database. Specific measurements were also proposed to address discrepancies between existing data, and some of these experimental studies are described in detail within this paper.

Abstract

The α -decay half-life of Cm 246 has been measured to be T 1 / 2 = 4706 (40) yr by means of the alpha-counting of ingrowth activity following the decay of a mass separated source of the Cf 250 parent nuclide. The α -decay emission probabilities of Cm 246 and Cf 250 have also been determined with high precision and have been compared with results from previous measurements. A new α -decay branch of Cm 246 to the 4 + level of the ground-state band of the Pu 242 daughter nucleus has been identified and characterized.
