Abstract

Hypersaline systems are sensitive, mainly because of severe osmotic pressure. In these conditions, the introduction of inorganic dissolved nutrients can pose severe impacts on the water quality, leading to eutrophication, and in extreme episodes can cause fish mortalities. Most of the research on trophic processes in the water column of coastal environments focuses on temporal variation, but in extensive systems like Araruama Lagoon in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, spatial variations may be important as well. The main goal of this work was to evaluate the spatial–temporal variation of trophic processes in Araruama Lagoon in the years 2010 and 2011. The State Environmental Agency (Rio de Janeiro) collected water samples from 52 sites during five campaigns, where water quality was analyzed. Contour maps were prepared to allow the interpretation of natural processes. Rainfall information was included to allow the evaluation of interactions between anthropic and climatic factors. It was concluded that the water quality was severely affected by an atypical summer precipitation that occurred in 2010, which was shown to influence the system until the winter of 2010. Furthermore, despite the large volume of the lagoon, nutrients originating from domestic effluents seem to promote unexpected negative environmental impacts.

Abstract

We aimed to compare the classic Light's criteria with different testing strategies in an effort to improve the accuracy of pleural fluid (PF) categorization. Thirty-two patients with transudates and 140 with exudates on the basis of their clinical diagnosis were entered into the study. We examined the discriminative properties of 10 analytes in the identification of PF, both singly and in combination with an 'or' rule, to see which was best in distinguishing a transudate from an exudate. A combination of PF lactate dehydrogenase (LD) 7 307 U/L (two-thirds of the upper limit of the serum LD reference range) with either PF cholesterol 7 1·55 mmol/L or PF to serum protein ratio 7 0.5 had a diagnostic accuracy similar to that of Light's criteria. We suggest the use of PF LD and cholesterol in combination as an alternative method for distinguishing pleural transudates from exudates. This test combination avoids the need for venepuncture and the simultaneous collection of a blood sample.

Abstract

Objectives: To compare the accuracy of Light's criteria for categorizing a pleural effusion as an exudate with several alternative criteria.Design: Prospective evaluation of patients who underwent a diagnostic thoracocentesis.Setting: Community teaching hospital in Lleida, Spain.Patients and methods: Medical records and pleural fluid characteristics of 241 consecutive patients with pleural effusion admitted over a 29-month period were reviewed. Forty eight of these patients were excluded for different reasons. Light's criteria and a different cutoff level for the pleural fluid cholesterol level were applied and their accuracies were calculated.Results: Of the 193 patients included, 38 (20%) had transudates and 155 (80%) exudates. The accuracy of Light's criteria for identifying exudates was 92% [confidence intervals (CI), 88–96%], with a sensitivity of 97% (CI, 94–100%) and specificity of 71% (CI, 57–85%). A cutoff level of 50 mg dl−1 was selected for pleural cholesterol, which yielded a sensitivity and specificity of 84% (CI, 79–90%), with an accuracy of 84% (CI, 72–96%). Abstract

The precise determination of the neutron capture cross sections of Os186 and Os187 is important to define the s-process abundance of Os187 at the formation of the solar system. This quantity can be used to evaluate the radiogenic component of the abundance of Os187 due to the decay of the unstable Re187 (t1/2=41.2 Gyr) and from this to infer the time duration of the nucleosynthesis in our galaxy (Re/Os cosmochronometer). The neutron capture cross sections of Os186, Os187, and Os188 have been measured at the CERN n-TOF facility from 1 eV to 1 MeV, covering the entire energy range of astrophysical interest. The measurement has been performed by time-of-flight technique using isotopically enriched samples and two C6D6 scintillation detectors for recording the prompt γ rays emitted in the capture events. Maxwellian averaged capture cross sections have been determined for thermal energies between kT=5 and 100 keV corresponding to all possible s-process scenarios. The estimated uncertainties for the values at 30 keV are 4.1, 3.3, and 4.7% for Os186, Os187, and Os188, respectively. © 2010 The American Physical Society

Abstract

Neutron resonance analyses have been performed for the capture cross sections of 186Os, 187Os, and 188Os measured at the n_TOF facility at cern. Resonance parameters have been extracted up to 5, 3, and 8 keV, respectively, using the sammy code for a full R-matrix fit of the capture yields. From these results average resonance parameters were derived by a statistical analysis to provide a comprehensive experimental basis for modeling of the stellar neutron capture rates of these isotopes in terms of the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model. Consistent calculations for the capture and inelastic reaction channels are crucial for the evaluation of stellar enhancement factors to correct the Maxwellian averaged cross sections obtained from experimental data for the effect of thermally populated excited states. These factors have been calculated for the full temperature range of current scenarios of s-process nucleosynthesis using the combined information of the experimental data in the region of resolved resonances and in the continuum. The consequences of this analysis for the s-process component of the 187Os abundance and the related impact on the evaluation of the time duration of galactic nucleosynthesis via the Re/Os cosmochronometer are discussed.

Abstract

The U233(n,f) cross section has been measured at the white neutron source n-TOF in a wide energy range with a dedicated fission ionization chamber. We report here the results from ∼30 meV to 1 MeV neutron energy. The U233(n,f) cross section has been determined relative to a reference sample of U235(n,f) measured simultaneously with the same detector. The very high instantaneous neutron flux and the intrinsically low background of the n-TOF installation result in an accuracy around 3% in the whole energy range, while the energy resolution of the neutron beam allows for an accurate description of the fission cross section by means of R-matrix analysis over a wide energy range. The results are, in general, in good agreement with the most recent high-accuracy measurement of this fission cross section, over the more limited range of the previous measurements, and indicated that even the latest evaluations underestimate the cross section in the epithermal region. Abstract

The n_TOF Collaboration has built and commissioned a high-performance detector for (n, gamma) measurements called the Total Absorption Calorimeter (TAC). The TAC was especially designed for measuring neutron capture cross-sections of low-mass and/or radioactive samples with the accuracy required for nuclear technology and stellar nucleosynthesis. We present a detailed description of the TAC and discuss its overall performance in terms of energy and time resolution, background discrimination, detection efficiency and neutron sensitivity. Abstract

he CERN Neutron Time-Of-Flight (n_TOF) facility is well suited to measure low cross sections as those of neutron-induced fission in subactinides. The cross section ratios of (nat)Pb and (209)Bi relative to (235)U and (238)U were measured using PPAC detectors and a fragment coincidence method that allows us to identify the fission events. The present experiment provides first results for neutron-induced fission up to 1 GeV. Good agreement is found with previous experimental data below 200 MeV. The comparison with proton-induced fission indicates that the limiting regime where neutron-induced and proton-induced fission reach equal cross sections is close to 1 GeV.
