Abstract

Abstract Background Genomic epidemiology has helped reconstruct the global and regional movement of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). However, there is still a lack of understanding of SARS-CoV-2 spread in some of the world’s least developed countries (LDCs). Methods To begin to address this disparity, we studied the transmission dynamics of the virus in Bangladesh during the country’s first COVID-19 wave by analysing case reports and whole-genome sequences from all eight divisions of the country. Results We detected > 50 virus introductions to the country during the period, including during a period of national lockdown. Additionally, through discrete phylogeographic analyses, we identified that geographical distance and population -density and/or -size influenced virus spatial dispersal in Bangladesh. Conclusions Overall, this study expands our knowledge of SARS-CoV-2 genomic epidemiology in Bangladesh, shedding light on crucial transmission characteristics within the country, while also acknowledging resemblances and differences to patterns observed in other nations.

2. Red light optimized physiological traits and enhanced the growth of ramie (Boehmeria nivea L.)

Abstract

Light is an important variable affecting the plant growth. In present study, the effects of different color light-emitting diodes (mixed colors, red, blue, and orange light) on plant growth, gas exchange, and oxidative stress were investigated in Boehmeria nivea L., by means of measuring growth, photosynthesis, chlorophyll (Chl) content, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and activity of antioxidant enzymes under controlled conditions. Comparing to the mixed colors light, red light significantly increased shoot and leaf biomass, plant height, number of leaves per plant, and stem diameter by increasing the Chl content and therefore promoting the highest photosynthetic capacity. This might partially be explained by the decrease of malondialdehyde and proline contents as well as the activities of superoxide dismutase and peroxidase under red light, to keep a better internal environment of the cell. However, blue and orange light decreased plant growth, and increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes which suggest an environmental stress on plants. These results suggest that red light can enhance B. nivea growth by activating photosynthesis and reducing ROS accumulation.

Abstract

This study investigated the effective utilization of black cumin (Nigella sativa) extract as natural antioxidant source in cooked beef patties at refrigeration storage for 15 days and its efficacy was figured out against synthetic antioxidant butylated hydroxyl anisole (BHA). For this purpose, beef patties were formulated having five treatments namely control group (T0), 0.1% BHA (T1), 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3% black cumin extract as (T2), (T3) and (T4) respectively. Day's intervals of this study were on 0, 5th, 10th, and 15th day. Black cumin extract revealed an excellent antioxidant activity over BHA in terms of sensory (color, flavor, tenderness, juiciness, and overall acceptability) and physicochemical (pH, free fatty acids (FFA), peroxide value (POV) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS)) qualities in patties. 4. Determinants of adoption and preferences for Aman rice mutant variety Binadhan-7 cultivation in Bangladesh

Abstract

This study was conducted in fourteen agricultural regions of Bangladesh namely-Mymensingh, Jashore, Cumilla, Bogura, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Dinajpur, Rangpur, Dhaka, Khulna, Chattagram, Rangamati, Barishal and Faridpur. The specific objectives of the present study were: i) to examine the determinants to adoption of rice mutant variety Binadhan-7; and ii) to identify the major preferences and constraints of rice mutant variety Binadhan-7 cultivation; A multistage stratified random sampling technique was used to collect the data. Marginal coefficients indicate that if male farmers increased by 100%, the probability of adopting Binadhan-7 variety would increase at 38 times more likely to adopt the variety. If the farm size of Binadhan-7 increased by 100%, the probability of adopting the variety would be increased by 0.07%. A farmer who has access to agricultural extension service is about 39 times more likely to adopt the variety. Again, if the yield increased by 100%, adopting the varieties would increase by 0.08%. The marginal coefficients of duration and soil fertility are negatively significant, indicating that if these two variables increased by 100%, the probability of adopting the varieties would decrease by 0.18% and 28%, respectively. Among the preferences, the highest preference was 88.93% for short duration followed by poverty reduction (88.57%), and lastly high yielding (81.43%). Among the constraints, the highest constraint was 80.71% for high labour price followed by lack of godown (69.64%), marketing problem (67.50%), destroy by bird (66.79%) and lack of quality seed (48.93%).

Abstract

The study was conducted to evaluate the culture and growth performance of spirulina (Spirulina platensis) in supernatant of three different amounts of digested rotten potato (DRP), and Kosaric medium (KM) as control in 16 days after 26 days digestion. Three different concentrations such as 20, 40 and 60% of DRP were used. Spirulina was inoculated in supernatant DRP along with 9.0 g/L NaHCO3 and micronutrients, and KM for a period of 14 days. The cell weight of spirulina was attained a maximum of 12.42 ± 0.21 mg/L in KM followed by 8.352 ± 0.21, 6.256 ± 2.34 and 9.505 ± 0.43 mg/L in supernatant of 40, 20 and 60% DRP, respectively on the 10th day of culture. Abstract

Recent developments in genome editing have opened new vistas for functional genomics and crop improvement. The CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeat)/Cas9 system is a powerful tool for genome editing. The exponentially growing world population will need more food with better nutritional content, improved stress tolerance, enhanced disease resistance, and there is no other way to ignore the benefits of advanced crop improvement tools such as genome editing for climate-smart sustainable agriculture. The discovery of high precision genome-editing tools has advanced plant genetic engineering to newer heights. CRISPR/Cas9 was adopted from a naturally occurring genome editing system in bacteria. Unlike the previous generation genome editing tools such as zinc-finger nucleases (ZFNs) and transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs), CRISPR/Cas9 brings in simplicity in cloning, versatility in deploying various guide RNAs, and cost-effectiveness. A number of crop species have been successfully subjected to genome editing and this technique shows great potential towards achieving global food security. From a consumer point of view, safety aspect of biotech products is of paramount importance; however, the regulatory procedures need to evolve continuously to cope up with the rapid changes happening in the biotechnology sector. This chapter discusses the significance of this novel genome editing technique and its potential for crop improvement.

Abstract

Impact of high pressure (HP) treatment (200, 400 and 600 MPa for 15 min) on the functional, structural and rheological properties of red kidney bean protein isolate (KBPI) was investigated. HP treatment significantly influenced the water holding capacity, foaming, emulsifying properties, at above 600 MPa. FTIR spectroscopy traced the changes in the secondary structure (β-sheets) with the pressure treatment. Oscillatory rheological measurement of the HP-treated KBPI dispersions showed a significant increase in the G′ and the G″ with increasing frequency, and a distinct thermal denaturation temperature (Td). DSC measurement showed a slightly higher Td values (105 °C) than rheometry. SDS-PAGE profiles revealed that the HP had a little effect on the protein structure when samples were treated below 600 MPa. The potential of plant-derived proteins have increased tremendously, and the developed KBPI could be used as one of the functional and nutritional ingredients in the food industry.

Abstract

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the major cereal crops for consumption by the world’s population. Recently, various colored rice, such as white, red, brown, green, and black rice, have caught the attention of world consumers. The commercial name ‘black rice’ contains a high amount of anthocyanins in pericarp, which increases nutritional value. Moreover, anthocyanin in black rice possesses biomedical properties, including anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory effects in humans. In genetics, black rice has a dominant PURPLE PERICARP (Prp) trait governed by two genes, Pb and Pp, which are involved in the synthesis of cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G). Since the publication of a report by Nagai at 1921, the genetics and physiological studies of black rice driven by Prp traits are still unable to understand the relevant genes and their roles. However, with the increased demand for anthocyanin-rich black rice as a functional food for human health, it has become urgent to develop highyielding anthocyanin-rich varieties of rice. We explored many years in the genetics of purple pericarp trait, anthocyanin biosynthesis in pericarp during seed development, and, consequently, their products in relation to different physiological and agronomic traits. In this review, we summarized the anthocyanin biosynthesis in pericarp, emphasizing the inheritance pattern of the trait and functions of their products on different physiological and agronomic traits, including the yield of black rice.

Abstract

Background: Assessments of age-specifc mortality and life expectancy have been done by the UN Population Division, Department of Economics and Social Afairs (UNPOP), the United States Census Bureau, WHO, and as part of previous iterations of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD). Previous iterations of the GBD used population estimates from UNPOP, which were not derived in a way that was internally consistent with the estimates of the numbers of deaths in the GBD. The present iteration of the GBD, GBD 2017, improves on previous assessments and provides timely estimates of the mortality experience of populations globally. Methods: The GBD uses all available data to produce estimates of mortality rates between 1950 and 2017 for 23 age groups, both sexes, and 918 locations, including 195 countries and territories and subnational locations for 16 countries. Data used include vital registration systems, sample registration systems, household surveys (complete birth histories, summary birth histories, sibling histories), censuses (summary birth histories, household deaths), and Demographic Surveillance Sites. In total, this analysis used 8259 data sources. Estimates of the probability of death between birth and the age of 5 years and between ages 15 and 60 years are generated and then input into a model life table system to produce complete life tables for all locations and years. Fatal discontinuities and mortality due to HIV/AIDS are analysed separately and then incorporated into the estimation. We analyse the relationship between age-specifc mortality and development status using the Socio-demographic Index, a composite measure based on fertility under the age of 25 years, education, and income. There are four main methodological improvements in GBD 2017 compared with GBD 2016: 622 additional data sources have been incorporated; new estimates of population, generated by the GBD study, are used; statistical methods used in diferent components of the analysis have been further standardised and improved; and the analysis has been extended backwards in time by two decades to start in 1950. Findings: Globally, 18·7% (95% uncertainty interval 18·4-19·0) of deaths were registered in 1950 and that proportion has been steadily increasing since, with 58·8% (58·2-59·3) of all deaths being registered in 2015. At the global level, between 1950 and 2017, life expectancy increased from 48·1 years (46·5-49·6) to 70·5 years (70·1-70·8) for men and from 52·9 years (51·7-54·0) to 75·6 years (75·3-75·9) for women. Despite this overall progress, there remains substantial variation in life expectancy at birth in 2017, which ranges from 49·1 years (46·5-51·7) for men in the Central African Republic to 87·6 years (86·9-88·1) among women in Singapore. The greatest progress across age groups was for children younger than 5 years; under-5 mortality dropped from 216·0 deaths (196·3-238·1) per 1000 livebirths in 1950 to 38·9 deaths (35·6-42·83) per 1000 livebirths in 2017, with huge reductions across countries. Nevertheless, there were still 5·4 million (5·2-5·6) deaths among children younger than 5 years in the world in 2017. Progress has been less pronounced and more variable for adults, especially for adult males, who had stagnant or increasing mortality rates in several countries. The gap between male and female life expectancy between 1950 and 2017, while relatively stable at the global level, shows distinctive patterns across super-regions and has consistently been the largest in central Europe, eastern Europe, and central Asia, and smallest in south Asia. Performance was also variable across countries and time in observed mortality rates compared with those expected on the basis of development. Interpretation: This analysis of age-sex-specifc mortality shows that there are remarkably complex patterns in population mortality across countries. The fndings of this study highlight global successes, such as the large decline in under-5 mortality, which refects signifcant local, national, and global commitment and investment over several decades. However, they also bring attention to mortality patterns that are a cause for concern, particularly among adult men and, to a lesser extent, women, whose mortality rates have stagnated in many countries over the time period of this study, and in some cases are increasing. © 2018 The Author(s).

Abstract

Background: Population estimates underpin demographic and epidemiological research and are used to track progress on numerous international indicators of health and development. To date, internationally available estimates of population and fertility, although useful, have not been produced with transparent and replicable methods and do not use standardised estimates of mortality. We present single-calendar year and single-year of age estimates of fertility and population by sex with standardised and replicable methods. Methods: We estimated population in 195 locations by single year of age and single calendar year from 1950 to 2017 with standardised and replicable methods. We based the estimates on the demographic balancing equation, with inputs of fertility, mortality, population, and migration data. Fertility data came from 7817 location-years of vital registration data, 429 surveys reporting complete birth histories, and 977 surveys and censuses reporting summary birth histories. We estimated age-specific fertility rates (ASFRs; the annual number of livebirths to women of a specified age group per 1000 women in that age group) by use of spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression and used the ASFRs to estimate total fertility rates (TFRs; the average number of children a woman would bear if she survived through the end of the reproductive age span [age 10–54 years] and experienced at each age a particular set of ASFRs observed in the year of interest). Because of sparse data, fertility at ages 10–14 years and 50–54 years was estimated from data on fertility in women aged 15–19 years and 45–49 years, through use of linear regression. Age-specific mortality data came from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 estimates. Data on population came from 1257 censuses and 761 population registry location-years and were adjusted for underenumeration and age misreporting with standard demographic methods. Migration was estimated with the GBD Bayesian demographic balancing model, after incorporating information about refugee migration into the model prior. Final population estimates used the cohort-component method of population projection, with inputs of fertility, mortality, and migration data. Population uncertainty was estimated by use of out-of-sample predictive validity testing. With these data, we estimated the trends in population by age and sex and in fertility by age between 1950 and 2017 in 195 countries and territories. Findings: From 1950 to 2017, TFRs decreased by 49·4% (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 46·4–52·0). The TFR decreased from 4·7 livebirths (4·5–4·9) to 2·4 livebirths (2·2–2·5), and the ASFR of mothers aged 10–19 years decreased from 37 livebirths (34–40) to 22 livebirths (19–24) per 1000 women. Despite reductions in the TFR, the global population has been increasing by an average of 83·8 million people per year since 1985. The global population increased by 197·2% (193·3–200·8) since 1950, from 2·6 billion (2·5–2·6) to 7·6 billion (7·4–7·9) people in 2017; much of this increase was in the proportion of the global population in south Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. The global annual rate of population growth increased between 1950 and 1964, when it peaked at 2·0%; this rate then remained nearly constant until 1970 and then decreased to 1·1% in 2017. Population growth rates in the southeast Asia, east Asia, and Oceania GBD super-region decreased from 2·5% in 1963 to 0·7% in 2017, whereas in sub-Saharan Africa, population growth rates were almost at the highest reported levels ever in 2017, when they were at 2·7%. The global average age increased from 26·6 years in 1950 to 32·1 years in 2017, and the proportion of the population that is of working age (age 15–64 years) increased from 59·9% to 65·3%. At the national level, the TFR decreased in all countries and territories between 1950 and 2017; in 2017, TFRs ranged from a low of 1·0 livebirths (95% UI 0·9–1·2) in Cyprus to a high of 7·1 livebirths (6·8–7·4) in Niger. The TFR under age 25 years (TFU25; number of livebirths expected by age 25 years for a hypothetical woman who survived the age group and was exposed to current ASFRs) in 2017 ranged from 0·08 livebirths (0·07–0·09) in South Korea to 2·4 livebirths (2·2–2·6) in Niger, and the TFR over age 30 years (TFO30; number of livebirths expected for a hypothetical woman ageing from 30 to 54 years who survived the age group and was exposed to current ASFRs) ranged from a low of 0·3 livebirths (0·3–0·4) in Puerto Rico to a high of 3·1 livebirths (3·0–3·2) in Niger. TFO30 was higher than TFU25 in 145 countries and territories in 2017. 33 countries had a negative population growth rate from 2010 to 2017, most of which were located in central, eastern, and western Europe, whereas population growth rates of more than 2·0% were seen in 33 of 46 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2017, less than 65% of the national population was of working age in 12 of 34 high-income countries, and less than 50% of the national population was of working age in Mali, Chad, and Niger. Interpretation: Population trends create demographic dividends and headwinds (ie, economic benefits and detriments) that affect national economies and determine national planning needs. Although TFRs are decreasing, the global population continues to grow as mortality declines, with diverse patterns at the national level and across age groups. To our knowledge, this is the first study to provide transparent and replicable estimates of population and fertility, which can be used to inform decision making and to monitor progress. Abstract

Background: How long one lives, how many years of life are spent in good and poor health, and how the population's state of health and leading causes of disability change over time all have implications for policy, planning, and provision of services. We comparatively assessed the patterns and trends of healthy life expectancy (HALE), which quantifies the number of years of life expected to be lived in good health, and the complementary measure of disability-adjusted lifeyears (DALYs), a composite measure of disease burden capturing both premature mortality and prevalence and severityof ill health, for 359 diseases and injuries for 195 countries and territories over the past 28 years. Methods We used data for age-speci?c mortality rates, years of life lost (YLLs) due to premature mortality, and years lived with disability (YLDs) from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 to calculate HALE and DALYs from 1990 to 2017. We calculated HALE using age-specific mortality rates and YLDs per capita for each location, age, sex, and year. We calculated DALYs for 359 causes as the sum of YLLs and YLDs. We assessed how observed HALE and DALYs differed by country and sex from expected trends based on Sociodemographic Index (SDI). We also analysed HALE by decomposing years of life gained into years spent in good health and in poor health, between 1990 and 2017, and extra years lived by females compared with males. Findings Globally, from 1990 to 2017, life expectancy at birth increased by 7·4 years (95% uncertainty interval 7·1-7·8), from 65·6 years (65·3-65·8) in 1990 to 73·0 years (72·7-73·3) in 2017. The increase in years of life varied from 5·1 years (5·0-5·3) in high SDI countries to 12·0 years (11·3-12·8) in low SDI countries. Of the additional years of life expected at birth, 26·3% (20·1-33·1) were expected to be spent in poor health in high SDI countries compared with 11·7% (8·8-15·1) in low-middle SDI countries. HALE at birth increased by 6·3 years (5·9-6·7), from 57·0 years (54·6-59·1) in 1990 to 63·3 years (60·5-65·7) in 2017. The increase varied from 3·8 years (3·4-4·1) in high SDI countries to 10·5 years (9·8-11·2) in low SDI countries. Even larger variations in HALE than these were observed between countries, ranging from 1·0 year (0·4-1·7) in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (62·4 years [59·9-64·7] in 1990 to 63·5 years [60·9-65·8] in 2017) to 23·7 years (21·9-25·6) in Eritrea (30·7 years [28·9-32·2] in 1990 to 54·4 years [51·5-57·1] in 2017). In most countries, the increase in HALE was smaller than the increase in overall life expectancy, indicating more years lived in poor health. In 180 of 195 countries and territories, females were expected to live longer than males in 2017, with extra years lived varying from 1·4 years (0·6-2·3) in Algeria to 11·9 years (10·9-12·9) in Ukraine. Of the extra years gained, the proportion spent in poor health varied largely across countries, with less than 20% of additional years spent in poor health in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Burundi, and Slovakia, whereas in Bahrain all the extra years were spent in poor health. In 2017, the highest estimate of HALE at birth was in Singapore for both females (75·8 years [72·4-78·7]) and males (72·6 years [69·8-75·0]) and the lowest estimates were in Central African Republic (47·0 years [43·7-50·2] for females and 42·8 years [40·1-45·6] for males). Globally, in 2017, the ?ve leading causes of DALYs were neonatal disorders, ischaemic heart disease, stroke, lower respiratory infections, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Between 1990 and 2017, age-standardised DALY rates decreased by 41·3% (38·8-43·5) for communicable diseases and by 49·8% (47·9-51·6) for neonatal disorders. For non-communicable diseases, global DALYs increased by 40·1% (36·8-43·0), although age-standardised DALY rates decreased by 18·1% (16·0-20·2). Interpretation With increasing life expectancy in most countries, the question of whether the additional years of life gained are spent in good health or poor health has been increasingly relevant because of the potential policy implications, such as health-care provisions and extending retirement ages. In some locations, a large proportion of those additional years are spent in poor health. Large inequalities in HALE and disease burden exist across countries in different SDI quintiles and between sexes. The burden of disabling conditions has serious implications for health system planning and health-related expenditures. Despite the progress made in reducing the burden of communicable diseases and neonatal disorders in low SDI countries, the speed of this progress could be increased by scaling up proven interventions. The global trends among non-communicable diseases indicate that more effort is needed to maximise HALE, such as risk prevention and attention to upstream determinants of health. Abstract

Background: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD 2017) includes a comprehensive assessment of incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability (YLDs) for 354 causes in 195 countries and territories from 1990 to 2017. Previous GBD studies have shown how the decline of mortality rates from 1990 to 2016 has led to an increase in life expectancy, an ageing global population, and an expansion of the non-fatal burden of disease and injury. These studies have also shown how a substantial portion of the world's population experiences non-fatal health loss with considerable heterogeneity among different causes, locations, ages, and sexes. Ongoing objectives of the GBD study include increasing the level of estimation detail, improving analytical strategies, and increasing the amount of high-quality data. Methods: We estimated incidence and prevalence for 354 diseases and injuries and 3484 sequelae. We used an updated and extensive body of literature studies, survey data, surveillance data, inpatient admission records, outpatient visit records, and health insurance claims, and additionally used results from cause of death models to inform estimates using a total of 68 781 data sources. Newly available clinical data from India, Iran, Japan, Jordan, Nepal, China, Brazil, Norway, and Italy were incorporated, as well as updated claims data from the USA and new claims data from Taiwan (province of China) and Singapore. We used DisMod-MR 2.1, a Bayesian meta-regression tool, as the main method of estimation, ensuring consistency between rates of incidence, prevalence, remission, and cause of death for each condition. YLDs were estimated as the product of a prevalence estimate and a disability weight for health states of each mutually exclusive sequela, adjusted for comorbidity. We updated the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a summary development indicator of income per capita, years of schooling, and total fertility rate. Additionally, we calculated differences between male and female YLDs to identify divergent trends across sexes. GBD 2017 complies with the Guidelines for Accurate and Transparent Health Estimates Reporting. Findings: Globally, for females, the causes with the greatest age-standardised prevalence were oral disorders, headache disorders, and haemoglobinopathies and haemolytic anaemias in both 1990 and 2017. For males, the causes with the greatest age-standardised prevalence were oral disorders, headache disorders, and tuberculosis including latent tuberculosis infection in both 1990 and 2017. In terms of YLDs, low back pain, headache disorders, and dietary iron deficiency were the leading Level 3 causes of YLD counts in 1990, whereas low back pain, headache disorders, and depressive disorders were the leading causes in 2017 for both sexes combined. All-cause age-standardised YLD rates decreased by 3·9% (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 3·1-4·6) from 1990 to 2017; however, the all-age YLD rate increased by 7·2% (6·0-8·4) while the total sum of global YLDs increased from 562 million (421-723) to 853 million (642-1100). The increases for males and females were similar, with increases in all-age YLD rates of 7·9% (6·6-9·2) for males and 6·5% (5·4-7·7) for females. We found significant differences between males and females in terms of age-standardised prevalence estimates for multiple causes. The causes with the greatest relative differences between sexes in 2017 included substance use disorders (3018 cases [95% UI 2782-3252] per 100 000 in males vs 1400 [1279-1524] per 100 000 in females), transport injuries (3322 [3082-3583] vs 2336 [2154-2535]), and self-harm and interpersonal violence (3265 [2943-3630] vs 5643 [5057-6302]). Interpretation: Global all-cause age-standardised YLD rates have improved only slightly over a period spanning nearly three decades. However, the magnitude of the non-fatal disease burden has expanded globally, with increasing numbers of people who have a wide spectrum of conditions. A subset of conditions has remained globally pervasive since 1990, whereas other conditions have displayed more dynamic trends, with different ages, sexes, and geographies across the globe experiencing varying burdens and trends of health loss. This study emphasises how global improvements in premature mortality for select conditions have led to older populations with complex and potentially expensive diseases, yet also highlights global achievements in certain domains of disease and injury. 20. Outcome of Early Surgical Intervention in Acute Lower Limb Ischemia due to Thromboembolism

Abstract

Background: Acute lower extremity ischemia is a common vascular disease and considered limb- and life- threatening. The present study evaluated and compared the outcome of early and late surgical intervention in acute lower limb ischemia due to thromboembolism. Methodology: This non randomized comparative parallel study was conducted at the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, NICVD, Dhaka, Bangladesh from January 2007 to December 2008 for duration of two year. Total 80 patients were enrolled in this study. The patients were divided into equal two groups, Group A, for early surgical intervention (with in 24 hours) and Group B, late surgical intervention (more than 24 hours). Results: Mean (±SD) age of both Group A and Group B was 51.93 (±11.73) and 47.00 (± 11.01) years. Male and female ratio of the total study population was 1.76:1 Pain and absence of pulse distal to occlusion was common for all. Cold extremity, sensory deficit, motor deficit, diminish vascular flow was the commonest findings of both group. In Group A, 57.5% had superficial femoral artery occlusion, 22.5% had iliac artery and 20.0% popliteal artery occlusion. In Group B, 42.5% had superficial femoral artery occlusion, 32.5% had popliteal artery occlusion and 25.0% had iliac artery occlusion. Fasciotomy was performed in 15.0% patients of Group A and in 22.0% patients of Group B. After Fogarty embolectomy in group A and group B had warm extremity (80.0% vs. 65.0%), pulsation distal to occlusion (90.0% vs. 75.0%), intact sensory function (82.5% vs. 67.5%), intact motor function (80.0% vs. 65.0%), and normal vascular flow by Doppler US (80.0% vs. 65.0%). During postoperative period history of bleeding, infection, reperfusion injury, muscle necrosis and limb amputation were 12.5% vs. 10.0%, 5.0% and 7.5%, 17.5% vs. 35.0%, 15.0% vs. 12.5% and 37.5% vs. 32.5% respectively. Conclusion: Duration of embolism may be the significant factor determining the outcomes of the management of acute arterial embolism in the lower extremities. The 24- hour duration of arterial embolism is a crucial factor influencing the surgical the management and early diagnosis and shifting of patients to specified centre as early as possible to save limb as well as life. Abstract

The purple pericarp color in rice was controlled by two dominant complementary genes, Pb and Pp. Crossing black rice ‘Heugnambyeo’ variants with three varieties of white pericarp rice gave a segregation ratio of 9 purple: 3 brown: 4 white. The Pp genes were segregated by homozygous PpPp alleles for the dark purple pericarps, heterozygous Pppp alleles for the medium and mixed purple pericarps, and homozygous pppp alleles for either brown or white pericarps with a 1 PpPp: 2 Pppp: 1 pppp segregation ratio, indicating that the Pp allele in rice is incompletely dominant to the recessive pp allele. Among the purple seeds, the amount of cyanidin-3-O-glucoside was higher in the dark purple seeds (Pb_PpPp) than in the medium purple seeds (Pb_Pppp). Moreover, no cyanidin-3-glucoside was detected in brown (Pb_pppp) or white pericarp seeds (pbpbpppp). These findings indicated that the level of cyanidin-3-glucoside was determined by the copy number of the Pp allele. Further genotype investigation of the F3 progeny demonstrated that the dominant Pb allele was present in either purple or brown pericarp. A 2-bp (GT) deletion from the DNA sequences of the dominant and functional Pb was found in the same DNA sequences of the recessive and non-functional pb allele. These findings suggested that the presence of at least a dominant Pb allele was an essential factor for color development in rice pericarps. In conclusion, the Pp allele in rice is incompletely dominant to the recessive pp allele; thus, the number of dominant Pp alleles determines the concentration of cyanidin-3-O-glucoside in black rice.

Salinity increase has been one of the major problems for traditional agricultural practices in coastal Bangladesh for several decades, but very few studies have been conducted on effects of salinity on agro-biodiversity in this area. This study investigated the salinity effects on agro-biodiversity in rice (Oryza sativa L.), vegetables, and fruit trees in three coastal, rural villages; Putia (Satkhira district), Srifaltala (Bagerhat district) and Hogolbunia (Khulna district). Information was collected by participatory rural appraisal methods including transect walks, group discussions, key informant interviews, and 121 personal interviews from July to December 2006. The study revealed that increased salinity had significant negative impacts on the overall agro-biodiversity. From 1975 to 2006 the number of indigenous rice varieties declined from seventeen to zero in Putia, from twelve to nine in Hogolbunia and from fifteen to two in Srifaltala. The encroachment of shrimp ponds near the homestead, and cultivation of high yielding, salt-tolerant rice varieties contributed to the decline of indigenous rice varieties. The occurrence of vegetable and fruit tree species declined from 1975 to 1990. The farmers appeared generally unaware of the importance of conservation of seeds and local landraces. This paper highlights factors directly and indirectly influencing farmers’ agricultural practices, and contributes to the discussion as to how environmental changes influence agro-biodiversity conservation and food production. The large reduction in agro-biodiversity, largely induced by increasing salinity, is alarming and threatens the Bangladeshi farmers’ ability to continue crop cultivation and thus their livelihood.

Abstract

Since shrimp farming started in Bangladesh in the 1970s, it has spread throughout the coastal region, increasing soil and water salinity levels. The water salinity in 2005 in the coastal districts of Khulna, Bagherat and Satkhira ranged from 0.3 to 20.7, 0.4 to 27.1 and 0.7 to 24.8 dS m−1, respectively, whereby it was highly saline for several months of the year. Water salinity above 2.5 dS m−1 is not suitable for irrigation, and may cause animal health problems. Irrigation with saline water may cause ion toxicity and osmotic stress, reducing plant growth and yield. Salinity has reduced the agro-biodiversity in the coastal regions of Bangladesh, and this paper investigates how these changes have impacted human food habits in the three coastal, rural villages Putia (Satkhira district), Srifaltala (Bagerhat district) and Hogolbunia (Khulna district). Fieldwork was conducted from July to December 2006 and Participatory Rural Appraisal methods including transect walks, key informant interviews, group discussions and personal interviews were carried out. In total, 121 respondents were interviewed and historical data from 1975 to 2006 were collected. For historical data, respondents aged above 50 years were sampled, but additional criteria such as socio-economic condition and farm location were applied to assure a sample representative for the population of the coastal areas. The sampled households had characteristics similar to the major part of Bangladeshi households (rural, agrarian based, regarding family size and food habits), and were thus representative of a broader cross-section of households in Bangladesh. As all sampled villages faced increasing salinity and spread of shrimp farming, they were representative of villages in the coastal areas. When salinity increased, the production of vegetables, seasonal fruits, animal species, eggs and milk declined. As the price of the mentioned animal commodities rose, cheaper commodities such as broilers, exotic and marine fish species and exotic oils were introduced. The decision on what to cultivate was also influenced by non-residents converting the farmers' land into shrimp ponds, increasing the salinity in the surroundings and killing the farmers' ducks. These agro-biodiversity changes caused reduced frequency of consumption of beef, goat, native chicken, egg, local freshwater fish, seasonal fruits, vegetables and milk, while broilers, exotic fish, exotic oils and marine fish species were increasingly consumed. Still, the total fish consumption declined. These changed food habits may lead to considerable negative health consequences for the rural, coastal populations.

The Brassica oilseed crops, Brassica rapa L., B. napus L., and B. juncea (L.) Czern. & Coss., carry the inherent property of tolerance to the acetolactate synthase-inhibiting herbicide ethametsulfuron. However, a self-compatible line of B. rapa subsp. oleifera (DC.) Metzg. susceptible to this herbicide was isolated through single-plant selection in a Canadian cultivar. The objective of the present study was to elucidate the genetic control of tolerance to this herbicide in B. rapa by using this susceptible line as a parent in crosses with tolerant lines. The susceptible line was crossed with two tolerant, self-incompatible lines of oleiferous B. rapa. The F 2 , B 1 (F 1 backcrossed to tolerant parent), B 2 (F 1 backcrossed to susceptible parent), F 3 , and B 1 S 1 generation populations were generated from the crosses and were evaluated for tolerance to ethametsulfuron. A single-gene locus was found to be involved in the control of this trait, with the tolerant phenotype being completely dominant over the susceptible. No difference in tolerance was detected in the populations derived from reciprocal crosses, suggesting the absence of cytoplasmic effects in the control of this trait. As the parents differed for self-incompatibility, segregation for this trait was found in the F 2 and backcross populations, as expected. However, self-incompatibility allele(s) did not exert any influence on segregation of the locus controlling tolerance to ethametsulfuron.

Abstract

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an ancient malady, which is one of the world’s most wide spread infectious bacterial agents. Fully one-third of the world’s population is already infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, with the greatest burden of disease and infection borne by people in developing countries. Tuberculosis disease is still out of control. Alarming spread of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and emergence of drug resistance is now further complicating the major problem. HIV not only makes the diagnosis of TB more difficult; it contributes to an increase in TB incidence. The rate of breakdown to clinical TB in individuals infected both with HIV and tuberculosis is many times higher than in those without HIV. The present vaccine is not sufficient to reduce the death rate by eradicating TB with HIV/AIDS. The present review is based on the prevention and treatment of TB patient and co-infected with HIV/AIDS and effect of HIV/AIDS on the treatment and prevention of TB. It will help assuming idea about future steps in prevention and treatment of TB among HIV/AIDS patients.

Gene expression was analysed by means of isozyme electrophoresis for three diploid species Brassica rapa (genome AA), B. nigra (BB), and B. oleracea/ B. oleracea var. alboglabra (CC), three amphidiploids B. juncea (AABB), B. napus (AACC) and B. carinata (BBCC), and in 15 interspecific hybrids from crosses within and between the diploids and the amphidiploids. Five enzyme systems were assessed: glucosephosphate isomerase, leucine aminopeptidase, phosphoglucomutase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and malate dehydrogenase. Alleles descending from the diploid species were found both in natural and artificially produced amphidiploids. No effect of reciprocal crosses was observed. i.e., the Brassica isozymes were under nuclear gene control. Inheritance of progoitrin and total aliphatic glucosinolate concentrations were investigated in oilseed rape, using parental, F1, F2 and first backcross generations, derived from a cross between resynthesized spring rape and a double-low spring rape cultivar. Progoitrin and total aliphatic glucosinolate concentrations were measured in mature seeds of single plants from these generations, using micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography. For progoitrin, an additive/dominance model of gene action adequately explained the variation among the generation means, but for total aliphatic glucosinolate concentration, non-allelic interactions were also detected. Predictions based on estimates of the genetic parameters indicated that recombinant inbred lines, rather than second cycle hybrids, appeared to offer a better prospect of reducing glucosinolate concentrations in this material. Estimates of the minimum number of genes controlling these two characters were broadly in line with the number required for the known stages of their biosynthesis.

Abstract

The binding of estriol, a female reproductive hormone, to bovine serum albumin (BSA) was studied by equilibrium dialysis (ED) method at 25°C and pH 7.4. Scatchard method of analysis showed that the binding of estriol has two sets of association constants: the high affinity association constant (k,) with low capacity (ni ) and low affinity association constant (k2) with high capacity (n2). Binding data of ED method suggested the presence of two high affinity binding sites with ki value of 1.54xl06 M'1 and ten low affinity binding sites with k2 value of 1.66xl05 M 1 at 25°C and pH 7.4. Site-specific probe displacement data suggested that estriol binds to site I, the warfarin site, with a higher affinity, while to site 11, the benzodiazepine site, with relatively lower affinity.

Abstract

A nanofiltration (NF) membrane process coupled with a bicycle pumping system was examined by using arsenic-contaminated tube well water in a rural area of Bangladesh. It was operated under the conditions of low recovery and low operational pressure. It was proposed using both permeate and concentrate of NF membranes for drinking water and another purpose. Rejection characteristics of arsenic compounds such as arsenite [As(III)] and arsenate [As(V)] were also investigated. Arsenite, a neutral solute at pH 8, showed lower rejection than arsenate, which existed in ionized forms at pH 8. In this sense the pre-oxidation of arsenite to arsenate was necessary to obtain safer drinking water using the NF process. Furthermore, the reverse osmosis (RO) process could be operated under the conditions of high operational pressure at 4MPa by using a bicycle pedal pump. Rejection of arsenite and arsenate with the RO membrane was over 95%. However, treatment of concentrate with a high concentration of arsenic might be necessary for the application of the RO process where recovery was obtained at 66%. A high recovery of 66% was delivered at three times a higher concentration of arsenic in concentrate than feed water. Consequently, a low-pressure NF process with the pre-oxidation of arsenite to arsenate or the RO process coupled with a bicycle pumping system could be applied to the treatment of arsenic-contaminated groundwater in areas where electricity supply is not efficient or feasible

The investigations on protein quality of raw faba bean seed meal (Vicia faba L. minor) and its fractions were carried out using rats in two experiments. Two varieties of faba seeds were used, locally grown faba bean 'Kalimattar' or 'black' (KSM) (492 g/kg diet) and its exotic counterpart Vicia faba L. minor 'White' (VFW) obtained from International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) (540 g/kg diet). The pulverized cotyledons of 'Kalimattar' (KMC; 438 g/kg diet), hull (KMH; 78 g/kg diet) as well as cotyledons of 'White' faba bean (VFWC; 470 g/kg diet) and hull (VFWH; 82 g/kg diet) fractions were tested. All diets were made isocaloric and isonitrogenous, however, without addition of individual amino acids to the target requirements. Performance of rats fed on both locally grown KSM and exotic FBW meal-fed rats were found to be inferior to those obtained from the rats fed on standard protein diet. The net protein utilization (NPU) of the rats fed on this seed meal was comparatively better than those obtained from the VFW. Replacement of standard protein with cotyledons from the either of the seed (KMC and VFWC) depressed food intake and protein utilization. This was due, in part, to the excretion of comparatively higher amount of nitrogen in faeces. Inclusion of KMH in the diet had no adverse effects on any variable studies as compared to the VFWH, which was found to impose severe restriction on the absorption of standard protein added to this diet. As a result, body weight gain, and NPU value were significantly lower than those obtained from the KMH. We conclude that the locally grown faba bean 'Kalimattar' is better than those of exotic 'White' cultivar and may contain less antinutritional substances. However, this warrants further investigations.

Abstract

Little attention has been devoted to the calibration of plant P tests for sorghum, especially under rainfed cropping although information is needed for developing an efficient P management strategy for increasing crop productivity. A field experiment was conducted for three years (1987–1989) to study the response of sorghum to fertilizer P (0, 10, 20 and 40 kg P ha-1) on a Vertisol, low in extractable P, at the ICRISAT Center, Patancheru (near Hyderabad), India. One sorghum crop was grown each year during the rainy season (June–September). Leaf tissue samples consisting of newest, fully-developed leaf, were collected at 50% flowering stage of the crop, for establishing relationship between leaf P concentration and grain yield. During the three years,sorghum grain yield and leaf P concentration increased in response to P application up to 40 kg P ha-1 and the leaf P concentration was linearly related to grain yield (r2 varied from 0.724 to 0.993). The critical leaf P concentration at 90% of the maximum grain yield was found to be about 0.25% P. Phosphorus content in the grain was not significantly correlated to yield.

Introduction. This study was undertaken to observe changes in cardiac parameters along with clinical and laboratory changes after renal transplantation. Patients and Methods. Cardiac parameters were evaluated by M-mode 2-dimensional echocardiography before transplantation and at monthly intervals. All subjects had functioning grafts at the time of the evaluations. Results. Fifty-two allograft recipients underwent pretransplant parameters for comparison to those at posttransplant months 1, 3, 6, and 12. After renal transplantation there is a substantial alteration in cardiac morphology and functions. This prospective study was undertaken to observe changes in different cardiac parameters in early months after transplantation. Patients and Methods: Twenty-two allograft recipients (primary disease glomerulonephritis) were evaluated in the immediate pretransplant period (0 month) and 1 and 3 months after transplantation by clinical and echocardiographic (M mode, 2D) evaluations. Results: Pretransplant echocardiogram showed left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in 100% subjects, LV dilation in 52%, and systolic dysfunction in 18%. Abstract

Low frequency Raman spectra of glasses of the types (BaO) x ·(B 2 O 3 ) 1− x and (BaCl 2 ) y ·[(BaO) x ·(B 2 O 3 ) 1 - y - x ] 1 - y have been reported. The temperature reduced Raman spectra show peaks at 67, 116 and 140 cm −1 for the binary glass. The bands at 116 and 140 cm −1 are ascribed to the librational motions of the borate groups and the 67 cm −1 band arises because of the limited structural correlation range (SCR) of the glass network, causing a maximum of the frequency dependent Raman coupling coefficient. Due to addition of BaO in v -B 2 O 3 , the oxygen are mostly incorporated in the formation of BO 4 units; however large Ba 2+ ions also enhance the number of non-bridging oxygen at higher concentrations of dopant. These barium ions as well as chlorine ions are accomodated in the interstitial vacancies of the glass network which leads to an expansion of the network structure.

Abstract

Raman spectra of lithium borate glasses in the system x Li 2 O. (1− x )B 2 O 3 for various values of x (0.10 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.50) in the temperature range 25–400°C are reported. It has been observed that with increasing x , the progressive formation of pentaborate, tetraborate, diborate, metaborate, pyroborate and orthoborate groups takes place along with the destruction of some of these units. Addition of Li 2 O to v-B 2 O 3 gives rise to a marked decrease in the value of the structural correlation range down to ~4.20 A at the x = 0.50 concentration of Li 2 O. Thus short-range ordering in x Li 2 O.(1 − x )B 2 O 3 glasses does not exceed the dimension of one six-membered boroxol ring. The intensity and position of the 130 cm −1 band is not influenced by the addition of lithium oxide. This band probably arises due to the librational modes of clusters of B and O atoms. Increasing the temperature of the glass samples results in an increasing disorder and the consequent thermal expansion of the glass. The increase of the disorder gives rise to an increase in the Raman bandwidth, whereas the thermal expansion of the glass is responsible for the decrease of the frequencies.
