A physically consistent approach is introduced to simulate dynamics of droplets in contact with solid substrates. The numerical method is developed by introducing the molecular–kinetic model within the framework of the level-set/enriched finite element method and including the theoretically resolved sub-elemental hydrodynamics. The level-set method is customized to comply fully with the model acquired for the moving contact-line. The consistency of the proposed method is verified by comparing the simulation results with the theoretical predictions. In order to further validate the method, the spreading of a droplet is numerically modeled and compared rigorously with the experimental data reported in the literature. The proposed method is also employed to capture the evolution of a droplet trapped in a conical pore. All test-cases are simulated on three-dimensional computational domains. A finite element method is introduced to simulate surface tension dominated flow of two immiscible fluids featuring an enriched space for capturing both strong and weak pressure discontinuities. The proposed enriched finite element space is created utilizing the standard finite element shape functions. Discontinuities are captured by adding merely one additional degree of freedom per each node of the elements cut by the interface. Being local to the cut elements, these additional degrees of freedom are eliminated before assembling the global system of equations following a condensation procedure. The method is stabilized introducing a procedure for improving the conditioning of the enriched pressure contribution to the stiffness matrix in small-cut situations. An improved smoothing strategy based on an artificial diffusion equation is proposed to enhance the performance of the method on rather coarse meshes. A series of three-dimensional two-phase fluid flow benchmarks are solved to assess the performance of the method. Particular attention is paid to surface tension dominated cases. The method is verified by showing its accuracy in capturing strong pressure discontinuity at the interface of a spherical droplet as well as its capability in handling large pressure gradient discontinuity in a hydrostatic liquid–gas container. The method is further validated by simulating oscillations of a slightly disturbed spherical droplet. The mass conservation property of the method and the effect of the smoothing procedure on the result is assessed by simulating the oscillations of a prolate droplet. Ultimately, the method is tested in a more challenging setting by simulating the rising gas bubble inside a liquid domain. The majority of tidal energy convertors (TECs) currently under development are of a non-yawing horizontal axis design. However, most energetic regions that have been identified as candidate sites for installation of TEC arrays exhibit some degree of directional and magnitude asymmetry between incident flood and ebb flow angles and velocities, particularly in nearshore environments where topographic, bathymetric and seabed frictional effects and interactions are significant. Understanding the contribution of directional and magnitude asymmetry to resource power density along with off axis rotor alignment to flow could influence site selection and help elucidate optimal turbine orientation. Here, 2D oceanographic model simulations and field data were analysed to investigate these effects at potential deployment locations in the Irish Sea; an energetic semi-enclosed shelf sea region. We find that observed sites exhibiting a high degree of asymmetry may be associated with a reduction of over 2% in annual energy yield when deployment design optimisation is ignored. Realistic oceanographic conditions are essential to consider in the design of resilient tidal-stream energy devices that can make meaningful contributions to global emissions targets. Depth-averaged or simplified velocity profiles are often used in studies of device performance, or device interaction with the environment. We improve representation of flow at tidal-stream energy regions by characterising the velocity profile. At two potential tidal-stream energy sites, the 1/7th power-law with a bed-roughness coefficient of 0.4 accurately described the observed velocity profile on average (>1 month ADCP deployments). Temporal variability in the power-law fit was found at both sites, and best characterised with Generalised Extreme Value distribution; with correlation of variability to tidal condition, wind speed and wave conditions found. The mean velocity profile was accurately simulated using a 3D hydrodynamic model (ROMS) of the Irish Sea (UK) but with temporal variability in accuracy of power-law fits. For all potential tidal sites, the spatial-mean velocity profile was also found to be similar (characterised with ∼1/7th power-law and 0.4 bed-roughness value). Therefore realistic flow conditions can be characterised for tidal-energy research, but dynamically coupled wind-wave-tide models, or long-term observations, are needed to fully characterise velocity profile temporal variability.

The Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method is extended to solve magnetostatic problems involving magnetically interacting solid bodies. In order to deal with the jump in the magnetic permeability at a fluid-solid interface, a consistent SPH scheme is utilized and a modified formulation is proposed to calculate the magnetic force density along the interface. The results of the magnetostatic solver are verified against those of the finite element method. The governing fluid flow equations are discretized using the same SPH scheme, developing an efficient method for simulating the motion of paramagnetic solid bodies in a fluid flow. The proposed algorithm is applied to a benchmark problem including a suspended paramagnetic solid body moving under the influence of a non-uniform magnetic field and the result is validated against literature. The proposed method is further verified by simulating the magneto-hydrodynamic interaction of two suspended circular cylinders. As a more complex test-case, the evolution of a suspended magnetic chain under the influence of a rotating magnetic field is also simulated. The deformation of a chain formed by a number of paramagnetic solid bodies in a shear flow is simulated. Steady state and dynamic responses of the magnetic chain are investigated under steady and oscillatory shear flows. The effects of Reynolds number, solid volume fraction, strength of the external magnetic field and the number of solid bodies forming the chain, are discussed.

In this study, the critical (or maximum) discharge rates before saline water enters a well were determined for vertical and horizontal wells in a freshwater aquifer which is separated from a static saline aquifer by a sharp interface. Flow around the well was solved by integration of a point sink solution along the well axis, and both the critical discharge rate and critical interface rise were determined through a comparison of the heads and vertical gradients at the saline–fresh water interface. The rates were determined for vertical and horizontal wells with various lengths and depths for different aquifer salinities. Results were generalized by drawing dimensionless type curves. The results showed that the dimensionless total critical discharge rates are higher for the longer horizontal wells and longer vertical wells with a certain bottom depth, and they almost linearly decrease with well depth at rates of 0.7–0.9. For the dimensionless well length of 0.2, the dimensionless total discharge rate of a horizontal well is about 0.1 more than that of a vertical well with the same length and well-top depth. Also, the critical discharge rates per unit length of well are inversely proportional to well length and remarkably higher for shallower wells. Additionally, the critical pumping rate is proportional to the salinity difference of the aquifers. These results were confirmed by comparison to existing solutions for vertical wells with dimensionless lengths of 0.2, 0.5 and 0.6, and for critical interface rises in the range of 0.75–0.9.

At present, the issue ecological balance restoring and rational resource con-sumption is especially acute, which determines large-scale transformations at the world level, as well as the need to modernize the tools for socio-economic develop-ment systems of countries (macro-level), individual territories and regions (meso-level), a set of interacting economic systems and economic units (microlevels). The article examines the problems of responsible resource consumption in regional socioeconomic systems, which led to change of effective growth paradigm to: 1) the sustainable development paradigm, society’s informatization; 2) selective regional policy of interregional differentiation. Obviously, at the macro-level, there is an intensive search for effective management of regional resource consumption; development of mechanisms and tools for environmental responsibility management. That is why a decrease in the level of negative impacts, as well as the consequences of low socio-economic development, determines the genesis of responsible resource consumption tools in regions’ strategizing as a key development task. However, the study of the ontology “responsible resource consumption tools” goes through the concept of sustainable development and is transformed into an integral, logically linked system of views, united by a common idea and aimed at achieving the goal of work.

Here, we apply incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (ISPH) to simulate free-surface flow around hydraulic structures using several classical case studies including dambreak, flow under a submerged gate, and simultaneous operation of a weir and gate. Due to many complexities such as unknown free-surface, rapidly varied flow, trans-critical flow, complicated geometry, and non-hydrostatic pressures, flow fields have traditionally been investigated by experimental methods, while powerful computational techniques such as ISPH are gradually being adopted for such studies. This research provides further details about the application of ISPH in this area. Two projection methods to enforce incompressibility of SPH were compared from mathematical and numerical view points. Further, two pressure formulations for approximating the left-hand-side of the Poisson equation resulted in a similar trend.

The problem of keeping an attention level is one of the common symptoms of attention deficit disorder. Dopamine deficiency is introduced as one of the causes of this disorder. Based on some physiological facts about the attention control mechanism and chaos intermittency, a behavioral model is presented in this paper. This model represents the problem of undesired alternation of attention level, and can also suggest different valuable predictions about a possible cause of attention deficit disorder. The proposed model reveals that there is a possible interaction between different neurotransmitters which help the individual to adaptively inhibit the attention switching over time. The result of this study can be used to examine and develop a new practical and more appropriate treatment for the problem of sustaining attention.

A weakly compressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (WCSPH) method is used along with a new no-slip boundary condition to simulate movement of rigid bodies in incompressible Newtonian fluid flows. It is shown that the new boundary treatment method helps to efficiently calculate the hydrodynamic interaction forces acting on moving bodies. To compensate the effect of truncated compact support near solid boundaries, the method needs specific consistent renormalized schemes for the first and second-order spatial derivatives. In order to resolve the problem of spurious pressure oscillations in the WCSPH method, a modification to the continuity equation is used which improves the stability of the numerical method. The performance of the proposed method is assessed by solving a number of two-dimensional low-Reynolds fluid flow problems containing circular solid bodies. Wherever possible, the results are compared with the available numerical data.

This study compares the dynamic behaviors of the Lorenz system with complex variables to that of the standard Lorenz system involving real variables. Different methodologies, including the Lyapunov Exponents spectrum, the bifurcation diagram, the first return map to the Poincaré section and topological entropy, were used to investigate and compare the behaviors of these two systems. The results show that expressing the Lorenz system in terms of complex variables leads to more distinguished behaviors, which could not be achieved in the Lorenz system with real variables, such as quasi-periodic and hyper-chaotic behaviors.

An explicit weakly compressible SPH method is introduced to study movement of suspended solid bodies in Oldroyd-B fluid flows. The proposed formulation does not need further stabilizing treatments and can be efficiently employed to study particulate flows with Deborah to Reynolds number ratios up to around 10. A modified boundary treatment technique is also presented which helps to deal with the movement of solid particles in the flow. The technique is computationally efficient and gives an improved evaluation of fluid-solid interaction forces. A number of test cases are solved to show performance of the proposed method in simulating particulate viscoelastic flows containing circular and non-circular cylinders. The effect of Deborah number on the particle trajectory has been investigated.

Numerical simulation of two-dimensional transient seepage is developed using radial basis function-based differential quadrature method (RBF-DQ). To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first application of this method to seepage analysis. For the general case of irregular geometry and unstructured node distribution, the local form of RBF-DQ was used. The multiquadric type of radial basis functions was selected for the computations, and the results were compared with analytical, finite element method, and existing numerical solutions from the literature. Results of this study show that localized RBF-DQ can produce accurate results for the analysis of seepage. The method is meshfree and easy to program, but as with previous applications of RBFs, requires careful selection of suitable shape parameters. A practical method for estimating suitable shape parameters is discussed. For time integration, Crank–Nicolson, Galerkin and finite difference methods were applied, leading to stable results.

An artificial neural network (ANN) was applied to predict seasonal beach profile evolution at various locations along the Tremadoc Bay, eastern Irish Sea. The beach profile variations in 19 stations for a period of about 7 years were studied using ANN. The model results were compared with field data. The most critical part of constructing ANN was the selection of minimum effective input data and the choice of proper activation function. Accordingly, some numerical techniques such as principal component analysis and correlation analysis were employed to detect the proper dataset. The geometric properties of the beach, wind data, local wave climate, and the corresponding beach level changes were fed to a feedforward backpropagation ANN. The performance of less than 0.0007 (mean square error) was achieved. The trained ANN model results had very good agreement with the beach profile surveys for the test data. Results of this study show that ANN can predict seasonal beach profile changes effectively, and the ANN results are generally more accurate when compared with computationally expensive mathematical model of the same study region. The ANN model results can be improved by the addition of more data, but the applicability of this method is limited to the range of the training data.

The Incremental Differential Quadrature Method (IDQM) was applied to a tidal and surge model of the Bristol Channel, UK. The method is considered as an alternative new numerical technique in the field of marine hydraulics and its performance was examined through this case study. For validation of the simulated results, tide gauge data along the Bristol Channel was used. Another well known 1D model (MIKE11) and a quasi-3D model (POLCOMS) provided more insight into the flow pattern of the estuary and additional validation data. Similar to MIKE11, IDQM is unconditionally stable and so time steps of around 45 min achieved good results for the Bristol Channel, whereas for methods which are restricted to the CFL criterion (e.g. explicit finite differencing schemes), the time step is limited to around 3 min. Since there is no stability constraint in IDQM, the time step must be selected with reference to accuracy rather than stability. The usefulness of IDQM was also demonstrated by using a small number of grid points (11 along the 110 km length of the Bristol Channel) to produce accurate results. Based on the results of this case study, it is concluded that IDQM can be successfully implemented for 1D modelling of tidal elevations and surges in non-prismatic irregular channels.

Beach profile data, collected twice per year at 19 stations over a 25 km length of coastline in Tremadoc Bay, have been analysed to quantify the inter-annual variability in beach levels over a 7 year period and the results compared against the output of a numerical model. Using hourly wind data as forcing, the morphological development of northern Tremadoc Bay was simulated by wave, tidal, longshore transport, total transport and bed level change models. The modelling methodology was efficient and innovative, allowing realistic simulations of long duration with a time step of 1 h, hence capturing the high frequency nature of wind events. The model was run for each of the 7 autumn/winter periods (generally November–April) and the modelled net change in beach levels compared with the data from all 19 stations. The model results had reasonable agreement with the beach profile surveys. However, the observed magnitude of bed level change in the bay lagged the model output by 1 year, indicating that sediment processes acting over a larger area are important in a relatively localised study of inter-annual variability.

A rapid, convergent and accurate differential quadrature method (DQM) is employed for numerical simulation of unsteady open channel flow. To the best of authors’ knowledge, this is the first attempt to use the DQM in open channel hydraulics. The Saint-Venant equations and the related nonhomogenous, time dependent boundary conditions are discretized in spatial and temporal domain by DQ rules. The unknowns in the entire domain are computed by satisfying governing equations, boundary and initial conditions simultaneously. By employing DQM, accurate results can be obtained using dramatically less grid points in spatial and time domain. The stability of DQM solution is not sensitive to choosing time step or Courant number unlike other methods. Although numerical problems such as instability, oscillation and underestimation near critical depth can be seen by using other methods but DQM solution is smooth and accurate in this case. The results are sensitive to grid distribution in time domain. In light of this, Chebyshev–Gauss–Lobatto distribution performance is excellent. To validate the DQM solutions, the obtained results are compared with those of the characteristic method. In conclusion, DQM is a potential powerful method with minimum computational effort for unsteady flow simulation.

A simple and efficient method to improve morphological predictions using depth-averaged tidal models is presented. The method includes the contribution of secondary flows in sediment transport using the computed flow field from a depth-averaged model. The method has been validated for a case study using the 3D POLCOMS model and ADCP data. The enhanced depth-averaged tidal model along with the SWAN wave model are applied to morphological prediction around the Lleyn Peninsula and Bardsey Island as a case study in the Irish Sea. Due to the presence of a headland in this area two asymmetrical tidal eddies are developed in which the cyclonic eddy is stronger as a result of Coriolis effects. The results show that the enhanced model can effectively predict formation of sand banks at the centre of cyclonic eddies, while the depth-averaged model, due to its inability to accommodate secondary flow, is inadequate in this respect.

Incremental Differential Quadrature Method (IDQM) as a rapid and accurate method for numerical simulation of Nonlinear Shallow Water (NLSW) waves is employed. To the best of authors’ knowledge, this is the first endeavor to exploit DQM in coastal hydraulics. The one-dimensional NLSW equations and related boundary conditions are discretized in space and temporal directions by DQM rules and the resulting system of equations are used to compute the state variables in the entire computational domain. It was found that the splitting of total simulation time into a number of smaller time increments, could significantly enhance the performance of the proposed method. Furthermore, results of this study show two main advantages for IDQM compared with other conventional methods, namely; unconditional stability and minimal computational effort. Indeed, using IDQM, one can use a few grid points (in spatial or time direction) without imposing any stability condition on the time step to obtain an accurate convergent solution.

A direct numerical simulation approach is used to investigate the effective non-linear viscoelastic stress response of non-gap-spanning magnetic chains suspended in a Newtonian fluid. The suspension is confined in a channel and the suspended clusters are formed under the influence of a constant external magnetic field. Large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) tests are conducted to study the non-linear rheology of the system. The effect of inertia on the intensity of non-linearities is discussed for both magnetic and non-magnetic cases. By conducting magnetic sweep tests, the intensity and quality of the non-linear stress response are studied as a function of the strength of the external magnetic field. The Chebyshev expansion of the stress response is used to quantify the non-linear intra-cycle behaviour of the suspension. It is demonstrated that the system shows a strain-softening behaviour while the variation of the dynamic viscosity is highly sensitive to the external magnetic field. In a series of strain sweep tests, the overall non-linear viscoelastic behaviour of the system is also investigated for both a constant frequency and a constant strain-rate amplitude. We introduce a new approach to ATM switching. We propose an ATM switch architecture which uses only a single shift-register-type buffering element to store and queue cells, and within the same (physical) queue, switches the cells by organizing them in logical queues destined for different output lines. The buffer is also a sequencer which allows flexible ordering of the cells in each logical queue to achieve any appropriate scheduling algorithm. This switch is proposed for use as the building block of large-stale multistage ATM switches because of low hardware complexity and flexibility in providing (per-VC) scheduling among the cells. The switch can also be used as scheduler/controller for RAM-based switches. The single-queue switch implements output queueing and performs full buffer sharing. The hardware complexity is low. The number of input and output lines can vary independently without affecting the switch core. The size of the buffering space can be increased simply by cascading the buffering elements.

In our previous work, we have proposed a formal QoS aware framework for Web services compositions based on quantitative Reo and quantitative constraint automata (QCA). In this work, we extend the previous one in two directions. First, we propose the logic QBTSL which is used for specifying and reasoning about non-functional properties of compositions. Second, we describe our approach for estimating QoS of compositions based on QoS of participant web services within the proposed framework. A case study is used to reflect the proposed concepts and a simple tool is developed to make the QoS estimation process, automatic.

Our objective in this paper is to introduce the detailed implementation and performance of a new method so called Incremental Differential Quadrature Method (IDQM) for modeling transient flow in pipelines. The basics of IDQM, its structure, and the formulation of the method for numerical simulation of transient flow in pipelines are discussed. The results obtained from this numerical exercise are compared with the method of characteristics and experimental data. The test case studies show that the best structure for IDQM solution is cosine grid distribution. In terms of viscous damping, the inclusion of unsteady friction term in the governing equations can improve the results significantly. This study demonstrates that IDQM can be regarded as a new alternative for numerical solution of transient flow such as water hammer in pipelines. IDQM is highly implicit in nature which makes the method unconditionally stable. It gives accurate results using few grid points.Copyright © 2008 by ASME

Recently, interest has turned to the mathematical concept of chaos as an explanation for a variety of complex processes in nature. Because of this property, it is hypothesized that biomedical signal may be an example of chaos. In this review, some of our basic concepts of nonlinear dynamics and chaos are illustrated. Mathematical techniques developed to study the properties of nonlinear dynamical systems are outlined. Finally, the results of applying these techniques to the study of stomach disorders are discussed. The application of these powerful and novel mathematical techniques to analysis of the gastric electrical activity (GEA) has provided now insights into the functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGD) and may have considerable utility in the diagnosis.

This paper introduces a wavelet packet algorithm based on a new wavelet like filter created by a neural mass model in place of wavelet. The hypothesis is that the performance of an ERP based BCI system can be improved by choosing an optimal wavelet derived from underlying mechanism of ERPs. The wavelet packet transform has been chosen for its generalization in comparison to wavelet. We compared the performance of proposed algorithm with existing standard wavelets as Db4, Bior4.4 and Coif3 in wavelet packet platform. The results showed a lowest cross validation error for the new filter in classification of two different kinds of ERP datasets via a SVM classifier.

EEG-based brain computer interface (BCI) provides a new communication channel between human brain and computer. The classification of EEG data is an important task in EEG-based BCI. In this paper we present a new modification on classic “Template Matching” to make a better detection for a specific pattern in EEG. The new method shows a significant improvement in P300 detection which is a common approach in BCI systems. The proposed model uses more than one scalp electrodes and combines the outputs with a fuzzy technique, to detect P300 cognitive component.

Considering the constant increase of network traffic, and existing bandwidth limitations, caching Internet objects is an essential technique to improve the provided quality of service and to reduce the network load. Caching is particularly helpful for video objects due to their interactive nature, large size, long playback duration, real time constraints, and typically variable bit rate. Several caching schemes for video streams have been proposed in the literature. The performance of the existing methods generally degrades in applications like video on demand where random access is common. In this paper a new two tiered proxy caching scheme for random access applications has been proposed. The proposed design consists of two layers: the cache layer and the fetch layer. The cache layer divides the incoming video stream into small segments, and selects the segments that should be cached based on their current access probability and the utility they provide. The fetch layer organizes the outgoing requests according to the priority it assigns to them. Simulation results indicate that the proposed technique outperforms existing caching schemes when random access is significant. The provided utility is up to three times better than the existing solutions.

Internet is migrating from a simple data network to an environment where a more demanding multimedia content like audio, video, and IP telephony is being delivered. The Internet Protocol (IP) was originally designed to interconnect heterogeneous networks. It scales well by keeping the core network as simple and dumb as possible and provides a best effort delivery service. However, multimedia applications require something better than a simple best effort delivery. Many solutions have been proposed to implement quality of service (QoS) on IP networks. Typically, these methods do not take into account the inherent characteristics of multimedia data, and leave most of the work to the end hosts. In this paper, we propose a framework for a new protocol set to integrate network and application level QoS to reach the best possible quality for multimedia delivery over the Internet. The suggested method has a modular, distributed and scalable architecture, enabling it to easily grow as the network size and/or QoS requirements change.

As more and more multimedia content is delivered and stored in the MPEG compressed format, there is an increasing need for compressed domain manipulation techniques. We introduce an efficient method to perform spatial domain scaling of MPEG video. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme is faster than the current compressed domain processes while having a comparable subjective quality.

Biofeedback plays an increasingly important role in mainstream computer applications, including hands-free human-machine interaction. The most obvious use of this technology is to help disabled people interact with their environment. The main challenge in brain computer interfaces is to identify the particular EEG signal components that can be successfully used as control commands. In this study, we show that the fractal dimension of EEG is such a component. This is verified via the experiments carried. The fractal dimension is known to be a good measure of the chaotic behavior of the EEG signal. An algorithm proposed by Higuchi is used to estimate the fractal dimension. Visual and auditory information extracted from the EEG signal of each subject are fed back to himself. Each subject was asked to perform any mental activity so as to alter the value of his EEC's fractal dimension. Our experiments show the feasibility of the EEG biofeedback method to change the fractal dimension of the EEG signal. Our study introduces the fractal dimension as a new feature that can be controlled by a person and used in brain computer interface systems.

One of the most important aspects of new researches in both engineering and medical sciences is to extract useful information from biomedical signals and find a reliable method for machine to learn it which makes the BCI a common field of interest for researches from both groups. Developing a reliable machine learning method plays a very crucial role in this issue. For a typical problem in BCI, ERP detection task, the major method is to classify the input EEG time series into two classes; with a desired ERP/Cognitive Component and without that desired ERP/Cognitive Component. Any powerful feature extraction or classifier block that can do this task accurately, can be of a great help. In this study, a new classifier based on modular learning strategy and a new wavelet for feature extraction, will be introduced and compared with some other classifiers in two states; with GA and without GA, which shows a an improvement in classification accuracy.
