A numerical model describing a magnonic active ring oscillator (MARO) based on a microscopic spin-wave delay line is proposed. The model considers excitation, propagation, and reception of the magnetostatic surface waves in a yttrium iron garnet (YIG) magnetic film with a thickness in the nanometer range. The waves are excited and received with a microscopic coplanar antenna. We employed the model to analyze the influence of the YIG-film thickness and the distance between the antennas on the MARO performance characteristics. We showed that an increase in the delay time inserted by the delay line reduces the phase noise of the MARO and increases the auto-oscillation threshold. In addition, we found a relation between the auto-oscillation threshold, the thickness of the YIG film, and the distance between the antennas. The relation helps design miniature MAROs and suggests a way to reduce the phase noise of the device. The model predicts a phase noise level of −115 dBc/Hz at a 10 kHz offset from an oscillation frequency in the vicinity of 5 GHz for the MARO based on a 100 nm-thick YIG film and 56 μm of distance between the coplanar nano-antennas of the YIG-film based delay line. We believe that this is a clear way forward to microminiaturize the time-delay feedback microwave auto-oscillators. A further reduction in the phase noise down to −125 dBc/Hz at a 10 kHz offset is found in a model of cascaded connection of several microscopic spin-wave delay lines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in magnetic thin films has attracted much attention due to its potential applications in spintronics devices. Here, we report the continuous strain-mediated PMA in epitaxial (111) CoFe 2 O 4 (CFO) thin films grown on (0001) LiTaO 3 substrates. A large variation in lattice strain (∼ 0.9 %) in a continuous way is realized in the CFO thin films by changing substrate temperature during deposition due to the difference in the thermal expansion coefficient between CFO and LiTaO 3. As a result, the PMA of the (111) CFO thin films can be continuously mediated by the strain with uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy in the range of 0.12 - 14.69 × 10 6 erg/cm 3. Furthermore, the strain as well as the consequent PMA in the (111) CFO thin films can be maintained within the thickness of 25–205 nm, which is consistent with the scenario of the magnetoelastic effect. Our results reveal that the CFO/LiTaO 3 system can be regarded as an ideal platform to realize robust PMA and its continuous strain tuning in the (111) CFO thin films by virtue of strain-induced magnetic anisotropy. Rare-earth iron garnets (REIGs) are the benchmark systems for magnonics, including the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE). While most research has focused on single-crystalline REIGs on complimentary garnet substrates, moving to more, cost-effective complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible substrates is important to integrate REIG thin films with existing technology. In this regard, we grow a 130 nm-thick polycrystalline gadolinium iron garnet (GdIG) film on the Si/SiO2 substrate and investigate the temperature-dependent LSSE. Interestingly, the polycrystalline GdIG film exhibits perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) at room temperature which is induced by tensile in-plane (IP)-strain originating from the thermal-expansion mismatch between the GdIG film and the substrate during rapid thermal annealing. Further, a spin-reorientation transition from the out-of-plane IP direction below TS = 180 K is observed. Additionally, the film reveals a magnetic compensation temperature, T Comp , of ≈240 K. The LSSE voltage not only demonstrates a sign-inversion around T Comp , but also shows noticeable changes around T S. As compared to a single-crystalline GdIG film, the lower LSSE voltage for the polycrystalline GdIG is attributed to the higher effective magnetic anisotropy and enhanced magnon scattering at the grain boundaries. Our study not only paves the way for the cost-effective growth of CMOS-compatible REIG-based systems with PMA for magnonic memory and information processing applications, but also highlights the fact that the spincaloritronic and spin-insulatronic properties of the polycrystalline REIGs follow those of their single-crystalline counterparts with reduced spin-to-charge conversion efficiency through LSSE which can be tuned further by controlling the average gran size and interface engineering. High Chern number topological insulators can be obtained in a film of layered magnetic block system theoretically and experimentally. With nonzero Chern numbers, Chern insulators become valuable for fundamental topological physics and for improving next-generation electronic devices. We study energy and angular momentum radiation from layered topological insulators using the Dirac Fermion approach and by Green's function method. We make a connection between radiation magnitude and topological phase transitions. We find that the magnetic exchange field, intra-layer coupling, and inter-layer interaction are efficient measures to modify the energy radiation of layered topological materials. Moreover, the magnetic exchange field is indispensable for emitting angular momentum due to the need for breaking time-reversal symmetry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we systematically investigated the anomalous Nernst effect in perpendicularly magnetized amorphous TbFeCo thin films with various compositions. It was found that the magnitude of the off diagonal thermopower (ODT), which corresponds to the anomalous Nernst effect, can be uniformly explained with respect to the Tb content regardless of the concentration above or below the compensation composition. The maximum ODT of 1.3 μ V/K and the thermoelectric conductivity of 1.59 A/mK at room temperature were obtained, which is more significant than other perpendicular magnetic anisotropy thin films to achieve a large Nernst voltage for roll-type thermoelectric devices. By considering the thermoelectric tensor, Mott's equation, and the scaling law, it was shown both experimentally and theoretically that the magnitudes of the first and second terms contributing to the anomalous Nernst effect are comparable. It was also found that the ODT of TbFeCo thin films is twice or more significant than the product of the Seebeck coefficient and the Hall angle. Furthermore, amorphous metals and Mn-alloys with a large Berry curvature are located above the relation that the ODT is twice the product of the Seebeck coefficient and the Hall angle, which means that amorphous metals are expected to enhance the ANE. This study investigates the out-of-plane magnetization component of electrodeposited Ni90Fe10 thin films grown under different applied magnetic field conditions. The formation of stripe domains is gradual, as there is a thickness range in which the transcritical shape appears in the hysteresis loops, while only magnetic ripples are measured in the magnetic force microscopy images. For instance, samples deposited under the residual magnetic field generated by the switched-off magnetic stirrer exhibit the transcritical shape in the in-plane hysteresis loops at a thickness of 400 nm, even though corresponding magnetic force microscopy images do not reveal the presence of stripe domains. When a perpendicular magnetic field of 100 Oe is applied during growth, stripe domains become visible in microscopy images, along with the transcritical shape in the hysteresis loop at 400 nm. This implies that the critical thickness for stripe formation can be reduced by applying a perpendicular magnetic field during electrodeposition. We have experimentally confirmed that the larger the magnetic field applied in the out-of-plane direction during growth, the smaller the critical thickness. These results underscore the importance of controlling the external magnetic field during electrodeposition for more effective tuning of the magnetic textures in electrodeposited Ni90Fe10 films. Magnetostrictive thin films, exhibit significant utility as functionalization materials for Surface acoustic wave sensors designed for magnetic field measurements. This research investigates the influence of annealing under vacuum and magnetic field at various temperatures on the magnetic properties of the FeCo/TbCo2 thin film and therefore on the sensitivity of shear and Rayleigh acoustic waveguides functionalized with these magnetic layers. The observed effects include a reduction in magnetic anisotropy field and an increase in magnetostriction. XPS and TEM coupled with EDS microanalysis provide insights into the variations in the properties of the nanostructured magnetic film. To safeguard the magnetic film, a thin layer of SiO2 is deposited on top, serving as a protective shield. The inclusion of this layer amplifies sensitivity to applied magnetic fields for modes with shear polarization while reducing sensitivity for Rayleigh mode. In ST‐cut Quartz, the shear waves become waveguided upon the incorporation of magnetic thin films, with further enhancement achieved by introducing a SiO2 layer. Rayleigh waves are evanescent modes, the penetration depth is in the order of wavelength, and the addition of SiO2 decrease the wave confinement and therefore the sensitivity. Postsynthetic, position‐selective addition of properties to materials constitutes a paradigm shifting step in materials engineering. The approach enables creation of material systems inaccessible by equilibrium and near‐equilibrium synthesis and can be applied in novel practical applications as well as fundamental physics studies over a range of length and energy scales. Ion implantation is a versatile, scalable, industry‐compatible tool, enabling the next step in this development. Herein, ion implantation is used to design and functionalize a mesoscopic magnetic architecture. A self‐supporting mask is combined with implantation of 60 keV Fe ions to create an embedded array of ≈8 μm‐wide circular ferromagnetic regions in a Pd film. The approach is contactless, free from surface residues, and requires no focusing or scanning of the beam. Magnetic properties of the array are probed with longitudinal magneto‐optic Kerr effect measurement while varying sample temperature and applied magnetic field. Microstructures are visualized with Kerr microscopy and compared to the Fe distribution measured with microbeam proton‐induced X‐Ray emission. Sample topography after implantation is obtained by atomic force microscopy, while ion beam analysis is used to probe concentration depth profiles of implanted Fe, impurities, and to investigate material mixing. Inkjet printing is a versatile and cheap technique for the fabrication of films, offering unique advantages in terms of scalability, precision, and customization. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in utilizing inkjet printing technology for the deposition of magnetic films with tailored properties. Cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) stands out due to its exceptional magnetic properties, including high coercivity, saturation magnetization, and excellent chemical stability. This paper presents a comprehensive study on the inkjet printing of cobalt ferrite magnetic films, focusing on the manufacturing process, especially on the different factors that could lead to stable multilayer depositions to achieve high thicknesses: ink solid loading, drop spacing, substrate temperature, and interlayers drying. Finally, the microstructure of the samples is investigated to identify the occurring defects after sintering between 800 and 1000 °C. Nanocrystalline NiFe thin films of 11 μm thickness have been deposited on Cu wire using an electrochemical technique in galvanostatic mode with a sodium gluconate (SG) additive in the plating solution. The SG concentration is systematically varied from 0 g/L to 80 g/L, which results in a substantial enhancement in the soft magnetic characteristics and magnetoimpedance (MI) ratio of the plated wire across a broad frequency spectrum, specifically attributed to the optimal inclusion of SG at 55 g/L. The observed improvements in magnetic softness and MI ratio are linked to the reduction in crystalline size and surface roughness and modifications in the microstructure influenced by the SG additive in the electroplating bath. Furthermore, an equivalence between experimental impedance data and the theoretical framework based on the analytical model of circumferential permeability is outlined to extract the material parameters of the permalloy magnetic films. These extracted parameters play a pivotal role, enabling a comprehensive understanding of the variation in the MI ratio as well as circumferential permeability of the thin films as a function of the SG additive concentration in the plating bath. The intricate association observed between the MI ratio and circumferential permeability suggests that the amplification of the MI ratio resulting from the inclusion of SG is linked primarily to enhancements in circumferential permeability and the incorporation of magnetic softness. We derive four reduced two-dimensional models that describe, at different spatial scales, the micromagnetics of ultrathin ferromagnetic materials of finite spatial extent featuring perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and interfacial Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction. Starting with a microscopic model that regularizes the stray field near the material’s lateral edges, we carry out an asymptotic analysis of the energy by means of Γ-convergence. Depending on the scaling assumptions on the size of the material domain versus the strength of dipolar interaction, we obtain a hierarchy of the limit energies that exhibit progressively stronger stray field effects of the material edges. These limit energies feature, respectively, a renormalization of the out-of-plane anisotropy, an additional local boundary penalty term forcing out-of-plane alignment of the magnetization at the edge, a pinned magnetization at the edge, and, finally, a pinned magnetization and an additional field-like term that blows up at the edge, as the sample’s lateral size is increased. The pinning of the magnetization at the edge restores the topological protection and enables the existence of magnetic skyrmions in bounded samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magnetic thin films with fast magnetization switching and low Gilbert damping are crucial for devices working at high frequency with low power consumption. In this work, composition-controlled high-quality Fe–Ni alloy thin films were electrodeposited on ITO/glass substrates and their magnetization switching behavior was investigated using MOKE and FMR. The phase of deposited alloy transformed from FCC to mixed BCC and FCC for high Fe content films. All the deposited alloy films display granular morphology and possess soft magnetic characteristics with low coercivity (Hc < 50 Oe). Magneto-optic Kerr effect hysteresis along with simultaneous domain imaging reveals that the alloy composition influences anisotropy, domain structure, and magnetization switching process. The alloyed films exhibited fourfold surface anisotropy. The magnetization reversal in pure Fe and Ni samples occurs through stripe-like domains, whereas band and ripple-like domains were evident for the alloyed films. Fast magnetization switching within a minimum field range of ~ 3 Oe was observed for Fe25Ni75 sample. The ferromagnetic resonance measurements revealed that the Fe25Ni75 alloy films exhibit lowest Gilbert damping (α = 0.024) compared to pure Fe and Ni films. The acoustically actuated nanomechanical magnetoelectric (ME) antennas represent a promising new technology that can significantly reduce antenna size by 1–2 orders of magnitude compared to traditional antennas. However, current ME antennas face challenges such as low antenna gain and narrow operating bandwidth, limiting their engineering applications. In this paper, we enhance the bandwidth and radiation performance of ME antennas through structural optimization, leveraging theoretical analysis and numerical simulations. Our findings indicate that optimizing the inner diameter of the ring-shaped ME antenna can elevate the average stress of the magnetic layer, leading to improved radiation performance and bandwidth compared to circular ME antennas. We establish an optimization model for the radiation performance of the ME antenna and conduct shape optimization simulations using COMSOL Multiphysics. The results of the Multiphysics field optimization align with the stress concentration theory, demonstrating a strong correlation between the radiation performance and bandwidth of the ME antenna with the average stress of the magnetic film. The resonant frequency in the thickness vibration mode is determined to be 170 MHz. Furthermore, shape optimization can enhance the bandwidth by up to 104% compared to circular ME antenna structures of the same size. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Cu-Fe binary alloys exhibit severe elemental segregation, resulting in an inhomogeneous microstructure, which leads to differences in microregion magnetic properties, thus affecting their application. Employing magnetron sputtering to produce films is advantageous for achieving a consistent dispersion of Fe within the Cu matrix. Furthermore, the addition of Ni will result in a more uniform distribution of Fe and facilitate the formation of the ferromagnetic Ni3Fe phase. In this study, Cu100−xFex and Cu100−x(Ni3/4Fe1/4)x series films were prepared by magnetron sputtering technique. The magnetic properties of films are closely related to their ferromagnetic element content. An increase in the content of ferromagnetic elements leads to an improvement in the saturation magnetization (MS) strength and a decrease in the coercivity (HC). The formation of Fe-Fe pairs is more favorable for magnetic properties compared to Ni-Fe pairs. Meanwhile, by comparing with bulk alloys, the distribution of the magnetic elements severely affects the magnetic properties. Moreover, the resistivity of Cu100−xFex films (20.3–96.7 μΩ cm) is much higher than that of Cu100−x(Ni3/4Fe1/4)x films (15.6–60.6 μΩ cm), which depends on the magnetic properties. L10-FePt thin films with (111)-texture were deposited on Si(100) substrates at various atomic ratios and annealing temperatures to be used as a cover layer for magnetic force microscope (MFM) tips. Their microstructure and magnetic properties were systematically studied. The experimental results indicate that both atomic ratio and annealing temperature affect the disorder-order transformation of FePt films. In particular, when the atomic ratio approaches 1:1 (Fe: 51 at.%, Pt: 49 at.%) and the annealing temperature is 600 °C, the FePt film exhibits an ultra-high in-plane coercivity of 13.2 kOe. This is attributed to the formation of an L10-FePt phase with high order parameters. Based on the optimal preparation parameters, MFM tips were prepared by depositing FePt films on non-magnetic Si tips. Magnetic domain structures of magnetic tape and magnetic recording medium were successfully observed using these home-made FePt MFM tips. Therefore, the high coercivity L10-FePt films with (111)-texture prepared on Si substrates are expected to be potential materials for the fabrication of MFM tips. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Swirling spin configurations with a non-trivial topological state are popularly known as magnetic skyrmions. They are often observed in magnetic thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI). Due to their small size and non-collinear spin texture, they are being considered as a potential candidate for spintronic devices such as data storage devices, and logic-based devices. These skyrmions have distinct properties and interactions, that can be utilized to control their movement by applying an external electric current. In this work, we have successfully demonstrated the operation of skyrmion-based universal NAND and NOR logic gates. We have further performed arithmetic addition of two and three single-bit by using a half and full adder, fabricated based on the XOR and AND gates. We have observed that the presence of only uniform DMI is not enough to achieve all logic operations. The presence of a negative DMI at the edges is crucial in achieving proper logic operations. The kagome lattice is an exciting solid state physics platform for the emergence of nontrivial quantum states driven by electronic correlations: topological effects, unconventional superconductivity, charge and spin density waves, and unusual magnetic states such as quantum spin liquids. While kagome lattices have been realized in complex multi-atomic bulk compounds, here we demonstrate from first-principles a process that we dub kagomerization, in which we fabricate a two-dimensional kagome lattice in monolayers of transition metals utilizing an hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) overlayer. Surprisingly, h-BN induces a large rearrangement of the transition metal atoms supported on a fcc(111) heavy-metal surface. This reconstruction is found to be rather generic for this type of heterostructures and has a profound impact on the underlying magnetic properties, ultimately stabilizing various topological magnetic solitons such as skyrmions and bimerons. Our findings call for a reconsideration of h-BN as merely a passive capping layer, showing its potential for not only reconstructing the atomic structure of the underlying material, e.g. through the kagomerization of magnetic films, but also enabling electronic and magnetic phases that are highly sought for the next generation of device technologies. Chirality plays a significant role in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. The use of chemical catalysts to control stereoselectivity relies on the use of chiral catalysts with labor–intensive synthesis and purification. Natural enzymes offer inherent stereoselectivity, making them attractive catalysts for this purpose. We report here chiral biocatalytic oxidations in microemulsions driven by horseradish peroxidase coupled with a synthetic Cu2+‐polymer catalyst. This hybrid system features crosslinked layer–by–layer (LBL) films composed of polyions with Cu2+‐containing pyrene–labelled poly(2‐hydroxy‐3‐dipicolylamino) propyl methacrylate (Py−PGMADPA) to drive oxygen reduction to form hydrogen peroxide. Peroxide in turn activates horseradish peroxidase (HRP) crosslinked in LbL films on magnetic particle beads to biocatalytically oxidize styrene, ethylbenzene, and methyl phenylacetate to chiral products. R‐stereoisomers of these reactants were selectively formed with a high enantiomeric excess of ≥80 % at 90 °C. The enzyme films show high thermal stability at 90 °C in cetyltrimethylammonium bromide microemulsion. Reactions at 90 °C were essentially complete in 2 hr. Mn5Ge3 is a ferromagnetic hexagonal crystal promising for spintronics and magnetocalorics. A systematic study and analysis of the magnetic properties of the Mn5Ge3 thin film grown on Si(111) were performed. The magnetic anisotropy of the film is determined by the shape anisotropy and the easy magnetization axis aligned along the c axis of the crystal. The uniaxial anisotropy constant Ku fully corresponds to that for a bulk single crystal, which indicates that c axis coincides with film normal. Mn5Ge3 film demonstrates high saturation magnetization MS = 900 emu/cm3 (900 kA/m) at T = 100 K and magnetocaloric effect ΔS = 3.16 ± 0.22 J kg−1 K−1 at 300 K and B = 1.5 T. ΔS is comparable to that for multicomponent or Gd rare earth films. Furthermore, a different anisotropy of the magnetocaloric effect compared to bulk Mn5Ge3 was found, which may be related to the anisotropy of the film shape and, possibly, to the domain structure. We designed and fabricated our original laminated materials that simultaneously exhibited different properties: magneto-optical (MO), i.e., the transverse MO Kerr effects (T-MOKE) and surface-plasmon resonance (SPR). The material design was composed of dielectric, magnetic, and noble-metal layers. We selected the soft-magnetic FeSi thin film as a T-MOKE magnetic layer, while an Au thin film was chosen as a SPR-source layer, creating an FeSi-/Au-based "MO-SPR material." Strong interactions between T-MOKE and SPR were demonstrated. When the material is irradiated with a laser beam of wavelength 660 nm, at the SPR angle to the material, θR, the highest T-MOKE value was attained. The T-MOKE was markedly enhanced at θR: ∼32 to ∼84 times higher compared with the FeSi single layer (reference). The T-MOKE was amplified by a strong interaction between MO activities and electromagnetic field distributions. The FeSi (5.0 nm)/Au (14.8 nm) specimen achieved the best signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The sample was then tested for its sensing efficiency by measuring the T-MOKE using distilled water and a glucose solution, respectively: It was possible to distinguish between two different solutions. Our MO-SPR materials utilizing both magnetism and near-field light are thus sufficiently sensitive to be applicable as sensing materials. Furthermore, the polarity of the T-MOKE signal is flipped under the application of a small, external magnetic field owing to the soft magnetism of the FeSi T-MOKE layer. Angular-dependent magnetoresistance (ADMR) of an epitaxial Fe(001) film is investigated with current along hard and easy axes in-plane at different temperatures. The temperature dependences of ordinary magnetoresistance (OMR), anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR), and magnetocrystalline anisotropy magnetoresistance (MMR) in ADMR were determined. As temperature decreases, negative OMR and positive AMR with a twofold symmetry show increasing and decreasing amplitudes, respectively. The amplitude of MMR with twofold and fourfold symmetries is almost invariable with both temperature and magnetic field. Meantime, when current was applied at hard and easy axes, MMR contributes an anti-phase signal to ADMR. Our findings of OMR, AMR, and MMR in the Fe(001) ADMR are of great significance to the understanding of magnetoresistance in magnetic films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magnetic soap films under the forcing of an inhomogeneous magnetic field are governed by a wide range of interconnected physics. The study of magnetic soap films requires the development of comprehensive models to support experimental observations. In this study, the thin film approximation is applied to the Navier–Stokes equations to derive a model for the film thickness of magnetic soap films that incorporates the effects of interfacial mobility, surfactant transport and magnetite nanoparticle (NP) transport. This derived model consists of a coupled system of equations for the film thickness, interfacial velocity, interfacial surfactant concentration and magnetite NP concentration. Simulations are performed for both soap films and magnetic soap films by solving the system of equations using the Galerkin finite element method, and results are compared with experiments. Simulation results highlight that interfacial flows can dominate the rate of film thinning and that accounting for the dependence of the magnetisation on the local magnetite NP concentration can influence the predicted speed of magnetically driven flows. Furthermore, simulation results demonstrate that the model is able to predict marginal regeneration in qualitative agreement with the experiments for soap films; the model also predicts the same flow pattern as seen in the experiments for magnetic soap films. This paper reports the systematic study on the structure, magnetic properties and magnetoelastic properties for the Fe100− x Ga x (001) thin films epitaxially grown on the different substrates of GaAs(001) and MgO(001) using the sputtering technique. The alloy composition dependence of effective magnetoelastic coupling coefficient B eff along the FeGa [110] direction indicated that the largest magnetoelastic coupling was obtained for the Fe–Ga layer with x = 30 grown on the MgO substrate, which was evaluated to be B eff = − 9.4 × 107 erg cm−3. Considering the results of structural analysis and magnetization measurement, the different crystallite sizes depending on the kind of substrate may give rise to the different magnetoelastic coupling strengths between the Fe–Ga layers on the MgO and the GaAs. The magnetostriction along the Fe–Ga [111] direction λ 111 was also estimated with the assumption of plausible elastic property of Fe–Ga, and showed the values comparable to the reported value of bulk Fe–Ga. This means the large magnetostriction can be obtained even for the Fe–Ga thin films epitaxially grown not only on the GaAs(001) but also on the MgO(001). We report the structural, magnetic, and interfacial spin transport properties of epitaxial terbium iron garnet (TbIG) ultrathin films deposited by magnetron sputtering. High crystallinity was achieved by growing the films on gadolinium gallium garnet substrates either at high temperatures, or at room temperature followed by thermal annealing, above 750 °C in both cases. The films display large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) induced by compressive strain, and tunable structural and magnetic properties through growth conditions or the substrate lattice parameter choice. The ferrimagnetic compensation temperature (T M) of selected TbIG films was measured through the temperature-dependent anomalous Hall effect in Pt/TbIG heterostructures. In the studied films, T M was found to be between 190 and 225 K, i.e., approximately 25-60 K lower than the bulk value, which is attributed to the combined action of Tb deficiency and oxygen vacancies in the garnet lattice evidenced by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. Sputtered TbIG ultrathin films with large PMA and highly tunable properties reported here can provide a suitable material platform for a wide range of spintronic experiments and device applications. Magneto-optical techniques are key tools for the characterization of magnetic effects at a nanoscale. Here, we present the dark-field magneto-optical Kerr effect (DFMOKE), a technique we have recently developed for the characterization of three-dimensional magnetic nanostructures. We introduce the principles of DFMOKE, based on the separation of an incident beam into multiple reflected beams when focusing on a 3D nano-geometry. We show the key modifications needed in a standard focused MOKE magnetometer to perform these measurements. Finally, we showcase the power of this method by detecting the magnetic switching of a single tilted 3D nanowire, independently from the switching of a magnetic thin film that surrounds it. We obtain independent and simultaneous switching detection of the nanowire and the film for all nanowire dimensions investigated, allowing us to estimate a magnetic sensitivity of 7 × 10−15 A m2 for DFMOKE in the setup used. We conclude the article by providing perspectives of future avenues where DFMOKE can be a very powerful characterization tool in the future investigations of 3D magnetic nanostructures. State-of-the-art THz spintronic emitters require a constant magnetic field to saturate their magnetization. We demonstrate that depositing the ferromagnetic layers at oblique incidence confines the magnetization to a chosen in-plane easy axis and maintains the saturation in the absence of an external magnetic field. We use this method to build THz emitters structured as spin valves, for which we use an external magnetic field to turn on and off the emission of THz radiation as well as to change its polarization. We propose an electric measurement technique for the magnetic anisotropy field of ferromagnetic thin films and their tiny patterned structures, particularly, in the case of in-plane magnetic anisotropy. This technique measures the anomalous Hall resistance by sweeping the angle or strength of the external magnetic field. The magnetic anisotropy field can be determined explicitly from the linear dependence of the Hall resistance on the angle and strength of the external magnetic field. The present technique can be applied to both ferromagnetic thin films and their patterned magnetic structures with small volumes, overcoming the signal resolution limit of conventional techniques. Magnonic crystals are structures with periodically varied magnetic properties that are used to control collective spin-wave excitations. With micromagnetic simulations, we study spin-wave spectra in a 2D antidot lattice based on a multilayered thin film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). We show that the modification of the PMA near the antidot edges introduces interesting changes to the spin-wave spectra, even in a fully saturated state. In particular, the spectra split into two types of excitations: bulk modes with amplitude concentrated in a homogeneous part of the antidot lattice and edge modes with an amplitude localized in the rims of reduced PMA at the antidot edges. Their dependence on the geometrical or material parameters is distinct, but at resonance conditions fulfilled, we found strong hybridization between bulk and radial edge modes. Interestingly, the hybridization between the fundamental modes in bulk and rim is of magnetostatic origin, but the exchange interactions determine the coupling between higher-order radial rim modes and the fundamental bulk mode of the antidot lattice. We have investigated the size dependent energy barrier regarding the transition between magnetic vortex and collinear states in dense arrays of magnetic cap structures hosting magnetic vortices. The cap structures were formed by the deposition of soft magnetic thin films on top of large arrays of densely packed polystyrene spheres. The energy barrier associated with the magnetic field assisted switching from a collinear magnetic state to a non-uniform vortex state (or vice versa) was tuned by tailoring the diameter and thickness of the soft magnetic caps. At a sufficient temperature, known as the bifurcation temperature, the thermal energy overcomes this energy barrier and magnetic bistability with a hysteresis-free switching occurs between the two magnetic states. In magnetic caps with a fixed thickness, the bifurcation temperature decreases with increasing cap diameter. On the other hand, for a fixed diameter, the bifurcation temperature increases with an increase in film thickness of the cap structure. This study demonstrates that the bifurcation temperature can be easily tailored by changing the magnetostatic energy contribution which in turn affects the energy barrier and thus the magnetic bistability. Magnonics is an emerging field within spintronics that focuses on developing novel magnetic devices capable of manipulating information through the modification of spin waves in nanostructures with submicron size. Here, we provide a confined magnetic rectangular element to modulate the standing spin waves, by changing the saturation magnetisation (MS), exchange constant (A), and the aspect ratio of rectangular magnetic elements via micromagnetic simulation. It is found that the bulk mode and the edge mode of the magnetic element form a hybrid with each other. With the decrease in MS, both the Kittel mode and the standing spin waves undergo a shift towards higher frequencies. On the contrary, as A decreases, the frequencies of standing spin waves become smaller, while the Kittel mode is almost unaffected. Moreover, when the length-to-width aspect ratio of the element is increased, standing spin waves along the width and length become split, leading to the observation of additional modes in the magnetic spectra. Magnetic skyrmions in thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy are promising candidates for magnetic memory and logic devices, making the development of ways to transport skyrmions efficiently in a desired trajectory of significant interest. Here, we investigate the transport of skyrmions by surface acoustic waves (SAWs) via several modalities using micromagnetic simulations. We show skyrmion pinning sites created by standing SAWs at anti-nodes and skyrmion Hall-like motion without pinning driven by traveling SAWs. We also show how orthogonal SAWs formed by combining a longitudinal traveling SAW and a transverse standing SAW can be used for the 2D positioning of skyrmions. Our results also suggest SAWs offer a viable approach to the transport of multiple skyrmions along a multichannel racetrack. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study used DC magnetron sputtering technology to fabricate Sm-Fe films and systematically investigated the phase transition behavior of Sm-Fe films with different Fe ratios. It was found that at higher Fe content, the films consisted of Sm2Fe17 or SmFe7 phases; as Fe content decreased, the films were mainly composed of SmFe3 or SmFe2 phases; at higher Sm content, the films primarily consisted of Sm phase. Sm is prone to volatilization at high temperatures, so Ta was used as a capping layer to effectively suppress Sm volatilization, successfully synthesizing pure SmFe2 phase films at a nearly 1:2 ratio. The magnetic properties and magnetostrictive behavior of the SmFe2 films were investigated, revealing that pure-phase SmFe2 films exhibit good perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and magnetostriction properties. The larger stress along the perpendicular-to-film direction, resulting from the absence of substrate-induced constraints, contributes to the excellent perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of the films. This study successfully synthesized pure-phase SmFe2 films and discovered a new method for fabricating perpendicularly anisotropic films. In this work, we investigated the effect of substrate on the structural, morphological, and magnetic properties of electrodeposited CoNi thin films from a chloride bath. Three samples of CoNi films were deposited at room temperature onto different substrates: FTO, ITO, and Cu. Electrochemical studies were performed using cyclic voltammetry experiments. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) showed that all the samples had a cobalt content of more than 80%. X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra revealed that the films deposited on Cu had a face-centered cubic (FCC) phase, while those deposited on ITO and FTO had a mixture of hexagonal close-packed (HCP) and FCC phases. The lattice parameter (a) and crystallite size (D) were strongly dependent on the substrate. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to observe the morphology of the films. All the samples had a granular morphology with spherical grains, but the roughness and surface distribution varied with the substrate. The magnetic properties of the films, such as coercivity (Hc) and squareness (S), were investigated using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results showed that Hc and S were both affected by the substrate and the film composition. Overall, our results showed that the substrate had a significant effect on the structural, morphological, and magnetic properties of electrodeposited CoNi thin films. The study examines the behavior of vortex-like magnetic inhomogeneities that arise in a ferromagnetic disk with spatially modulated uniaxial anisotropy under magnetic fields of varying orientations. The research identifies the characteristic remagnetization stages of the vortex-like inhomogeneities formed in the region of the defect. Critical fields of their rearrangement are found and an explanation is given for the difference in the behavior of these inhomogeneities in perpendicular and planar magnetic fields. Patterned micro-scale thin-film magnetic structures, in conjunction with weak (~few tens of Oe) applied magnetic fields, can create energy landscapes capable of trapping and transporting fluid-borne magnetic microparticles. These energy landscapes arise from magnetic field magnitude variations that arise in the vicinity of the magnetic structures. In this study, we examine means of calculating magnetic fields in the local vicinity of permalloy (Ni0.8Fe0.2) microdisks in weak (~tens of Oe) external magnetic fields. To do this, we employ micromagnetic simulations and the resulting calculations of fields. Because field calculation from micromagnetic simulations is computationally time-intensive, we discuss a method for fitting simulated results to improve calculation speed. Resulting stray fields vary dramatically based on variations in micromagnetic simulations—vortex vs. non-vortex micromagnetic results—which can each appear despite identical simulation final conditions, resulting in field strengths that differ by about a factor of two. The compensated ferrimagnetic insulator Gd3Fe5O12 (GdIG) with a magnetization compensation point (TM ∼ 286 K) near room temperature has recently gained significant attention because of its long spin transmission length and absence of Ohmic loss. However, previously reported GdIG films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy have a TM far below room temperature, which is unfavorable for practical applications. Here, we show the tuning of TM from 268 to 303.7 K in perpendicularly magnetized 15 nm GdIG films epitaxially grown on (111) Gd3Sc2Ga3O12 by manipulating the epitaxial strain through controlling the rapid cooling temperature during the annealing process. By varying the film thickness between 5 and 40 nm, the TM of the film can be further extended to a range of 246–380 K. We have also demonstrated highly efficient switching of the GdIG spin-sublattices driven by current at room temperature in the GdIG/Pt heterostructures with various TM values, especially with TM slightly higher than 300 K. Our findings reveal potential opportunities for insulating compensated ferrimagnetic films of GdIG in the development of high-density, high-speed, and energy-efficient spintronic devices. This research paper presents systematic micromagnetic modeling of dynamic spin solitons carried by perpendicular magnetization component on a topologically preserved chiral sequence of uniform 360° in-plane domain walls with fixed boundaries in a strip. The long, narrow strip of a soft, magnetic thin film has a repeated in-plane magnetization pattern such that the local magnetization will rotate uniformly in a single chirality, either clockwise or counterclockwise, when moving along the strip in one direction at a constant speed. As spins in an excited soliton precess around its local magnetization field, the exchange interaction with the underlying chiral magnetization configuration yields a linear soliton motion with the direction determined by the handedness of precession and the underlying magnetization chirality. Achieving simultaneous control over multiple functional properties, such as magnetic anisotropy, magnetoresistance, and metal-insulator transition, with atomic precision remains a major challenge for realizing advanced spintronic functionalities. Here, we demonstrate a unique approach to cooperatively tune these multiple functional properties in highly strained La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) thin films. By inserting varying perovskite buffer layers, compressively strained LSMO films transition from a ferromagnetic insulator with out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy to a metallic state with in-plane anisotropy. Remarkably, atomic-scale control of the buffer layer thickness enables precise tuning of this magnetic and electronic phase transformation. We achieve a colossal magnetoresistance tuning of 10,000% and an exceptionally sharp transition from out-of-plane to in-plane magnetic anisotropy within just a few atomic layers. These results demonstrate an unprecedented level of control over multiple functional properties, paving the way for the rational design of multifunctional oxide spintronic devices. In the development of any type of magnetic field sensor based on magnetic films, special consideration must be given to the magnetic layer component. The presented work investigates the use of scalable flux closing magnetostrictive multilayers for inverse magnetoelectric sensors. In such a type of magnetic field sensor, highly sensitive AC and DC field detection relies on strong excitation of the incorporated magnetic layers by piezoelectrically driven cantilever oscillation at mechanical resonances. The provoked periodic flux change is influenced by the magnetic field to be measured and is picked up by a coil, which generates the measured output. The multilayered inverse magnetoelectric sensor is investigated with regard to linearity, noise behavior, and detection limit of DC and AC signals. A significant advancement for inverse magnetoelectric thin film sensors is demonstrated in this study. Using exchange bias stabilized magnetic multilayers with flux closure structures, detection limits are improved by an order of magnitude to less than 8 pT/Hz1/2 at 10 Hz and 18 pT/Hz1/2 at DC. Spin-based technologies demand the effective excitation and control of high-frequency spin waves in order to increase the operational speed of magnonic logic circuits. An available option for the high-frequency spin wave is the perpendicular standing spin waves (PSSWs) in ferromagnetic thin films. However, the practical utilization of a PSSW is still challenging due to a few unsolved critical issues such as its relatively low amplitude and simultaneous excitation of other PSSW modes. Here, efficient excitation and control of a first-order PSSW mode are demonstrated in Ni80Fe20 thin films using a double-laser-pulse scheme. Based upon our experimental and theoretical investigations, it is found that the precession amplitudes of the Kittel and PSSW modes show strong dependence on equivalent torques (i.e., the averaged torques during fast relaxation process after the second pulse excitation) applied to these two modes. Thus, selective excitation and amplification of the first-order PSSW mode can be realized by manipulating the equivalent torque, i.e., introducing a second laser pulse with an appropriate arrival time and laser fluence. Moreover, the spectral tuning of this single PSSW mode can be achieved by proportionately adjusting the laser fluence of two pump pulses. Atomic-scale spin entity in a two-dimensional topological insulator lays the foundation to manufacture magnetic topological materials with single atomic thickness. Here, we have successfully fabricated Fe monomer, dimer and trimer doped in the monolayer stanene/Cu(111) through a low-temperature growth and systematically investigated Kondo effect by combining scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) with density functional theory (DFT) and numerical renormalization group (NRG) method. Given high spatial and energy resolution, tunneling conductance (dI/dU) spectra have resolved zero-bias Kondo resonance and resultant magnetic-field-dependent Zeeman splitting, yielding an effective spin Seff = 3/2 with an easy-plane magnetic anisotropy on the self-assembled Fe atomic dopants. Reduced Kondo temperature along with attenuated Kondo intensity from Fe monomer to trimer have been further identified as a manifestation of Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between Sn-separated Fe atoms. Such magnetic Fe atom assembly in turn constitutes important cornerstones for tailoring topological band structures and developing magnetic phase transition in the single-atom-layer stanene. The abundant topological magnetic textures in three-dimensional systems provide opportunities to investigate the fundamental spin dynamics and realize spintronic applications. The dynamics of such magnetic textures have however rarely been studied, especially for those driven by spin waves, which allow applications with ultralow energy consumption and ease of implementation even in insulating systems. Here, we report our micromagnetic simulations on the spin-wave-driven dynamics of a skyrmion tube (SkT) and chiral bobber (ChB) in a thick magnetic film. We predict tornado-like dynamics in both SkT and ChB, where the topological centers present a lateral rotation with the rotation centers forming a distorted profile in the thickness direction. While the velocity of SkT scales with the driving power, the ChB motion presents a threshold in the driving field, which is found to depend linearly on its penetration length. This distinct behavior could be useful to differentiate ChB from SkT and estimate its penetration length experimentally. The magnetic dynamics driven by spin waves can be useful for low-consumption devices, which is however still largely unexplored in three-dimensional system. Setting the magnetization and its properties in magnetic materials and films is of the utmost fundamental and technological importance for magnetic applications and devices. Magnetic permeabilities in a material are generally defined by the acting magnetic anisotropies together with an applied magnetic field. Here, deterministic switching of the effective dynamic magnetic properties is demonstrated by tunable networks of magnetic domain walls. By perforating magnetic films, a reversible switching between different magnetization states is achieved. Due to the resulting local effective dynamic fields for the changed domain configurations, different zero‐field permeability spectra are attained for the same material structure. Using local configurational magnetic resonances confined by magnetic domain walls, deterministic switchable bimodal dynamic behavior is achieved. Dynamic magnetooptical Kerr microscopy with picosecond temporal resolution proves that the varying periodic magnetic domain configurations are responsible for the dynamic magnetic bistability. In particular, the field‐free precessional magnetic response can be reproducibly switched between 1.3 and 2.3 GHz. The magnetization dynamics can be modified by small interventions in a repeatable manner beyond fixed material and structural properties. We present an investigation of the microstructure changes in V2O3 as it goes through its inherent structural phase transition. Using V2O3 films with a well-defined crystal structure deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering on r-plane Al2O3 substrates, we study the phase coexistence region and its impact on the surface roughness of the films and the magnetic properties of overlying Ni magnetic layers in V2O3/Ni hybrid magnetic heterostructures. The simultaneous presence of two phases in V2O3 during its structural phase transition was identified with high resolution x-ray diffraction and led to an increase in surface roughness observed using x-ray reflectivity. The roughness reaches its maximum at the midpoint of the transition. In V2O3/Ni hybrid heterostructures, we find a concomitant increase in the coercivity of the magnetic layer correlated with the increased roughness of the V2O3 surface. The chemical homogeneity of the V2O3 is confirmed through transmission electron microscopy analysis. High-angle annular dark field imaging and electron energy loss spectroscopy reveal an atomically flat interface between Al2O3 and V2O3, as well as a sharp interface between V2O3 and Ni. In this study, we focused on depositing a target material, cobalt-iron-dysprosium (Co60Fe20Dy20), onto silicon (Si) (100) substrates with thickness varying from 10 nm to 50 nm through a direct-current (DC) magnetron sputtering technique. The subsequent step involved subjecting the samples to an hour-long annealing process in a vacuum annealing furnace at temperatures of 100°C, 200°C, and 300°C. To assess the elemental composition of the CoFeDy films, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) was employed. An observed trend indicated an increase in low-frequency alternating-current magnetic susceptibility (χac) with the increasing thickness. Remarkably, the CoFeDy films exhibited their peak χac following annealing at 300°C, with an optimal resonance frequency of 50 Hz. After annealing at 300°C, the CoFeDy film's surface energy peaked at 50 nm. The magnetic, electrical, and adhesive properties of the CoFeDy films were notably influenced by surface roughness at different annealing temperatures. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis revealed a gradual reduction in film roughness post-annealing, corresponding to smoother surfaces indicative of a weaker domain wall pinning effect, heightened carrier conductivity, and increased liquid spreading. Soft ferromagnetic permalloy (NiFe) thin films are promising for applications in spintronic devices because of their constituent electrical and magnetic properties. Electron beam evaporation and sputtering techniques have been used to deposit NiFe thin films. For in situ stacking of NiFe with functional complex oxides, the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method is highly desirable. However, the growth of high‐quality NiFe (and non‐oxide thin films in general) by PLD remains a formidable task. Here, high‐quality NiFe thin films of various thicknesses on oxide/non‐oxide substrates with desirable magnetic properties by PLD at room temperature are reported. The magnetic properties are found to be strongly dependent on the laser fluence of the deposition process. The laser fluence of 4 J cm−2 produces the highest magnetization of ≈547 emu cc−1. The small coercivity (few Oersted) and sharp ferromagnetic switching behavior indicate uniaxial anisotropy with an easy axis along the in‐plane direction. In addition, thickness‐dependent magnetodynamics characterizations are studied via ferromagnetic resonance. Magnetic fiber robots have revealed great potential for future minimally invasive robotic surgery. However, with the miniaturization of fiber robots, the integration of functional microtools at the distal end becomes extremely challenging, since it requires assembling multifunctional structures on the curved surfaces of fiber ends, which typically have very small curvature radii. In this study, a submillimeter fiber robot with integrated micro‐manipulation tool at the distal end is reported using a "Swiss roll" assembly strategy. This approach enables the one‐step assembly of multiscale structures (mm‐µm) from a 2D film to a 3D tool on the curved surface of the fiber robot. The multiscale structure consists of a millimeter‐scale (mm) magnetic thin film with integrated micrometer‐scale (µm) feature structures, which is inspired from the cat tongue covered by numerous little papillae. The fiber robot can perform multiple functions including endovascular clot grabbing, liquid delivery, and sampling under the manipulation of the magnetic field. The strategy provides a universal protocol for integrating and assembling functional components at the distal end of fiber robots, contributing significantly to the functionalization and miniaturization of interventional medical robots.
