Microplastic pollution in the marine environment is of concern, with evidence of harmful effects onmarine biota and ecosystems. There is still a knowledge gap of the mass of plastics supplied to the ocean and plastics observed in the ocean, indicating a missing sink. Therefore, baseline and monitoring data are needed to inform policy and regulatory measures. The goal of this study was to collect harmonised data of microplastics from the surface of the ocean using the Neuston Microplastic Catamaran. This study shows that the surface water of the coastal ocean in the North Sea holds/sustains high concentrations of microplastic, which exceed previously recorded measurements from the North-East Atlantic and Scottish Waters, indicating that the total stock of plastics might be much higher than previously determined. Microplastics were detected in all samples with concentrations ranging from 857 to 25,462 items km-2. The majority of microplastics analysed were fragments of polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene in the size range of 1,000--5,000 µm. Mesoplastics (>5,000 µm) mainly in the form of filaments were found with concentrations ranging from 0 to 2,139 items km-2, and macroplastics (>5,000 µm) in the form of fragments and filaments were also found with concentrations ranging from 0 to 1,078 items km-2. These fragments and filaments likely originate from the break-up of common macrolitter items in the environment, such as plastic bags, bottles, and fishing gears, which are commonly comprised of similar polymers to those found in the present study. Our findings demonstrate that litters of all size classes are abundant in surface water, highlighting that it is a key compartment for the transport of marine litter and should be monitored to better our understanding of the fate and danger of plastic contamination in our ocean. In recent years, microplastics, especially marine microplastic pollution, have received global attention as a new type of environmental problem. The establishment of accurate and efficient methods for the detection of microplastics is the basis for in-depth research on the transport, transformation, fate, and ecotoxicological effects of microplastics in the environment. Microplastics in seawater frequently mix with biological tissues, resulting in challenges when identifying samples. However, commonly used pretreatment protocols for microplastics often suffer from long digestion times, inadequate digestion, and the risk of potentially damaging microplastics. This study compared the digestion efficiencies of five digestion reagents and provided further insights into two advanced oxidation methods involving Fenton's reagent and an innovative alkaline K2S2O8 protocol based on sulfate and hydroxyl radicals. Using Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and carbonyl index (CI) analyses, the status of microplastics after pretreatment was evaluated. The results revealed that the alkaline K2S2O8 method could enhance the reaction efficiency while reducing the potential for functional group damage during microplastic pretreatment. Moreover, the proposed K2S2O8 method was applied to the pretreatment of field seawater samples, and field microplastics were effectively separated from biologically rich samples. Thus, a digestion protocol based on alkaline K2S2O8 provides an effective way to isolate seawater microplastics from biologically rich samples. This article discusses another means of protecting the ocean to that of the London Convention regime, which prohibits or restricts the dumping of waste at sea, namely through compensation under the existing liability and compensation regimes relating to the spills of oil and other hazardous and noxious substances. Some main features of the existing liability regimes relating to ship-source spills – namely spills from oil tankers, spills of bunker oil from other ships and releases of other hazardous and noxious substances – are presented and their advantages and weaknesses are discussed. A sustainable strategy based on chitin from waste seafood is proposed to remove nano‐size microplastics in water. A chitin nanofibrous foam is constructed by a new hydrogen bond rearrangement scheme without any crosslinking, which delivers an impressive high adsorption capacity of 411.14 ± 1.50 mg g−1 for small‐sized (< 1 µm) microplastics. This excellent adsorption capacity stems from the rough fibrous surface structure of the highly porous foam, the positively charged nature of the partially deacetylated chitin and other molecular interactions introduced by the activation and increased exposure of ‐OH, ‐NH2 and ‐NHCO‐ groups. Molecular dynamics simulation further demonstrates that C‐H‐π, O‐H‐π, and C = O‐π interactions between the microplastics and chitin foam facilitates the efficient removal of microplastics. A high removal efficiency is maintained even in salty water, a property that exemplifies good adaptability to various water bodies. Finally, two proof‐of‐principle scenarios are presented for converting the recovered microplastics into value‐added products. Ocean oil pollution has a large impact on the environment and the health of living organisms. Bioremediation cleaning strategies are promising eco-friendly alternatives for tackling this problem. Previously, we designed and reported a hydrocarbon (HC) degrading microbial consortium of four marine strains belonging to the species Alloalcanivorax xenomutans, Halopseudomonas aestusnigri, Paenarthrobacter sp., and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. However, the knowledge about the metabolic potential of this bacterial consortium for HC bioremediation is not yet well understood. Here, we analyzed the complete genomes of these marine bacterial strains accompanied by a phylogenetic reconstruction along with 138 bacterial strains. Synteny between complete genomes of the same species or genus, revealed high conservation among strains of the same species, covering over 91% of their genomic sequences. Functional predictions highlighted a high abundance of genes related to HC degradation, which may result in functional redundancy within the consortium; however, unique and complete gene clusters linked to aromatic degradation were found in the four genomes, suggesting substrate specialization. Pangenome gain and loss analysis of genes involved in HC degradation provided insights into the evolutionary history of these capabilities, shedding light on the acquisition and loss of relevant genes related to alkane and aromatic degradation. Our work, including comparative genomic analyses, identification of secondary metabolites, and prediction of HC-degrading genes, enhances our understanding of the functional diversity and ecological roles of these marine bacteria in crude oil-contaminated marine environments and contributes to the applied knowledge of bioremediation. The CIE hue angle has significant potential in marine ecology and environment monitoring using remote sensing methods. It is calculated from the remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) of all visible bands, which serves as a comprehensive indicator of seawater radiance information and represents one of the key quantitative parameters for assessing seawater color. In this study, a remote sensing retrieval model of total suspended matter concentration (TSM) was developed using the in situ measured data acquired in the coastal waters of Qinhuangdao from 2013 to 2021. This model, based on the CIE hue angle, achieved performance metrics of R² = 0.68, MAPE=24.47%, and RMSE=2.72 mg/L, demonstrating better accuracy than traditional empirical models that utilize fewer bands. Based on this model, the monthly and interannual TSM in the coastal waters of Qinhuangdao from 2003 to 2023 were retrieved. Influenced by natural factors, such as the monsoons, the TSM in the coastal waters of Qinhuangdao generally exhibited a trend of first decreasing and then increasing from January to December. Except for certain anomalous years (2007, 2008, 2017, etc.), the overall variation process of TSM from 2003 to 2023 showed an initial increase followed by a decrease, closely related to the pollution reduction management requirements implemented by the Chinese government in different periods. The findings of this paper demonstrate that the coastal waters of Qinhuangdao have become clearer, and the ecological environment has been effectively improved as a result of the Chinese government's vigorous promotion of ecological civilization construction, adhering to the development concept that 'lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets', and by introducing the action plan for the comprehensive treatment of pollution in the Bohai Sea. The Eastern Mediterranean region, a vital conduit for global maritime trade, faces significant environmental challenges due to marine pollution, particularly from oil spills. This is the first study covering the long period of comprehensive monitoring of oil pollution using the full mission of Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data in the Mediterranean Sea, so this research aims to detect and analyze comprehensively the occurrence of oil spills in the Eastern Mediterranean over a decade (2014–2023). This study focuses on identifying geographical distribution patterns, proximity to shorelines, frequency across maritime zones, and potential sources of these spills, especially around major ports and maritime routes. This study utilizes SAR data from the Sentinel-1 satellite. The methodology included automated detection algorithms within the Sentinel application platform (SNAP) and integration with GIS mapping to study oil spill patterns and characteristics. Over 1000 Sentinel-1 scenes were investigated in the northern Mediterranean waters off the coast of Egypt, to detect and analyze 355 oil spill events with a total impacted area of more than 6000 km2. The analysis of temporal spill distribution reveals significant fluctuations from year to year. Within the entire timeline of the study, 2017 had the largest spatial areas covering one thousand square kilometers. In contrast, the single largest spill recorded during the study period occurred in 2020, covering 198.73 square kilometers. The results identified a non-uniform distribution of oil spills and primarily exhibiting elongated patterns aligned with the navigation routes. The distinct increase of oil spill incidents was within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), obviously drifted to the coastline and around major ports. The study emphasizes the critical role of remote sensing technologies in addressing environmental challenges caused by the maritime transport sector, advocating for enhanced monitoring and regulatory enforcement to protect marine ecosystems and support sustainable naval activities. This study was conducted during October 2021 (autumn) and April 2022 (spring) to explore the phytoplankton community structure, their distribution characteristics, and the influence of environmental factors in the coastal waters of the Southern Beibu Gulf. The 15 sampling sites were grouped based on the difference in offshore distance to analyze the temporal and spatial differences in community structure and environmental driving in the investigated sea area of the coastal waters of the Southern Beibu Gulf. Permutational multivariate analysis of variance was conducted on the sample data in time and space, revealing that there is no significant difference in space (p > 0.05), but there is significant difference in time (p < 0.05). Notably, water pressure, pH, chemical oxygen demand, nitrite, and labile phosphate were higher in autumn, while total ammonia nitrogen, dissolved oxygen, and suspended solids were significantly higher in spring. Additionally, the study identified 87 phytoplankton species belonging to 6 phyla, dominating by Bacillariophyta, followed by Dinophyta and Cyanophyta. The phytoplankton density, Shannon Weiner's diversity index (H'), Pielou's evenness index (J), and Margalef's richness index (D) ranged from 84.88 to 4675.33 cells L−1, 0.56 to 2.58, 0.26 to 0.89, and 1.21 to 3.64, respectively. Permutational multivariate analysis of variance showed non-significant spatial differences in phytoplankton composition (p > 0.05) but seasonal differences (p < 0.05). Furthermore, canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) identified pH, dissolved oxygen, suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand, nitrite, and labile phosphate as key environmental factors influencing the phytoplankton community structure (p < 0.05). In this study, the dynamic changes of phytoplankton community structure and environmental factors in the southern coastal waters of Beibu Gulf were analyzed in detail from two aspects of time and space. The key environmental factors to protect the ecological environment in the southern coastal area of Beibu Gulf were found out. Copper is an essential element in living organisms and is crucial in marine ecosystems. However, excessive concentrations can lead to seawater pollution and pose a risk of toxicity to marine organisms, as it is a heavy metal. In addition, it can enter the human body through the food chain, potentially endangering human health. Consequently, there is increasing focus on the rapid and highly sensitive detection of copper ions (Cu2+). We prepared a graphite carbon electrode modified with graphitised multi-walled carbon nanotubes/copper(II) ion carrier IV (GMWCNT/copper(II) ion carrier IV/glassy carbon electrode (GCE)) using a drop-coating method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that the composite material film possessed a large surface area. Incorporating this composite material significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity for ions on the electrode surface and greatly improved conductivity. Differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) was employed to quantify copper levels in seawater. Under optimal experimental conditions, a strong linear relationship was observed between the Cu2+ response peak current and its concentration within a range of 50–500 µg L−1, with a correlation coefficient of 0.996. The GMWCNT/copper(II) ion carrier IV/GCE exhibited excellent stability and reproducibility, achieving a low detection limit for Cu2+ at 0.74 µg L−1 when applied to copper detection in seawater. Furthermore, spiked recovery rates ranging from 98.6% to 102.8% demonstrated the method's high sensitivity, convenient operation, and practical value for real-world applications in detecting Cu2+ levels in seawater. The coastal zone of the Red Sea had been seriously subjected to enduring impacts including; petroleum exploration and production, overpopulation, and severe land-based enterprises. Heavy metal (HM) pollution in the marine ecosystem has become a severe ecological problem due to its damaging effects and persistence in the environment. Therefore, 41 surface sediment samples were collected from the frontal marine areas off the megacities of the Egyptian Red Sea to investigate the HMs contamination using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The recorded HM averages (μg/g) were follow the order of; Fe (6545.72) > Mn (177.76) > Zn (48.61) > Ni (20.96) ≥ Pb (20.84) > Cu (11.31) > Cd (1.38). Except for Cu, Ni, and Pb, the mean values of HMs in the examined samples surpassed the low reference values observed in the different sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), demonstrating these HMs have a rare risk to the aquatic population. The results of single pollution indices revealed that all investigated areas were unpolluted by Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, and Ni, and minimal to mildly contaminated by Pb and Cd. However, the pollution load index (PLI) indicated that the seafloor sediments of all studied cities were clearly unpolluted by HMs (PLI < 1). Additionally, correlations revealed that the observed HMs originated from comparable (terrigenous) origins, except for Ni, which could have accumulated from another anthropogenic source. Anthropogenic particles in sea surface water of the semi-enclosed Osaka Bay were identified using stereomicroscopy, classified according to polymer type using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and categorized according to their physical characteristics. A total of 565.1 particles were detected in the water samples. However, plastic particles accounted for only 22.4% of the particles. Microplastic abundance in Osaka Bay showed seasonal variance from 8.9 ± 1.4 (in May) to 22.8 ± 6.5 particles/L (in July), which is consistent with previous reports in other semi-enclosed bays. Microplastics were mainly fragmented and fiber shaped, with gray and colorless/white coloration. The dominant polymer types were polypropylene, poly(methylmethacrylate), polyester, polyethylene, and polyethylene terephthalate. Generally, there were considerably higher abundances of microplastics at offshore sites compared with nearshore sites. Metal contamination of the environment poses a significant threat to human health and can cause significant damage to aquatic ecosystems. Danio rerio was exposed to Sorocaba River water for 96 h from two different sites in summer (S) and winter (W). Concentrations of Al, Cd, Cu, Mn and Zn were determined in the exposure water and in sediment. At the end of the exposure, the concentrations of Al, Cu and Mn at the Ibiúna point (P1) and Mn at the Itupararanga point (P2) decreased compared to the initial concentrations in the water. In summer and winter, the highest concentrations of Cu and Mn were found in the sediment. Exposure to the Sorocaba River water caused various responses both in summer and winter. For example, GPx decreased in winter, Glutathione S-Transferase (GST) increased in summer, and Nitric Oxide Synthase (NOS) decreased in both seasons in the viscera. In winter, SOD Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) increased, while GPx and GST (winter) decreased in muscle; regarding viscera carbonyl proteins, there was an increase in the summer at P2. Acetylcholinesterase activity decreased in the brain in winter at P2 and NOS decreased in the summer-exposed groups and increased in the winter P2-exposed group. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH) decreased in viscera (S, P1) and increased in muscle (S, P1 and P2). The glucose and triglycerides increased in muscle, both in summer and winter. Correlation analysis revealed associations between biomarkers from different organs. These alterations suggest that the fish experienced oxidative stress in response to exposure to the Sorocaba River, contaminated with metals, highlighting their vulnerability to environmental pollutants. Plastic waste is particularly harmful to human life and the environment since it is difficult to degrade. This plastic waste contributes to seawater pollution, which can disrupt the food chain and harm biodiversity in the environment, particularly the mangrove ecosystem. Mangroves act as a sediment barrier and help to decrease coastal abrasion. In the natural environment, indigenous bacteria are crucial to the bioremediation of environmental pollution, including plastic waste pollution. Bioremediation is considered environmentally friendly and can accelerate the degradation time of waste containing toxic compounds. Biofilm-forming bacteria also play an important role in the biodegradation of plastics. This research was conducted to isolate bacteria from mangrove sediment and characterize their potential as a candidate to degrade polyethylene plastic. We have found that 25 of 53 PEG-degrading bacteria could form biofilms on plastic surfaces. Seven bacterial isolates showed the ability to produce clear zones during the degradation of PEG and biofilm formation. Oil spills pose significant threats to marine and freshwater environments, impacting ecosystems and drinking water sources. The present review incorporated an up‐to‐date statistical analysis of the oil spills globally including the types and sources of oil spills and the main habitats affected by the past incidents. It presented immediate and long‐term effects on aquatic organisms and habitats highlighting the necessity for action to protect the aquatic environment. The paper also elucidated a range of effective remediation and cleanup methods, presenting a comprehensive toolkit to mitigate ecological damage. Noticeably, the review identified crucial knowledge gaps in the literature: (i) the absence of marine plastic pollution in studies on oil spill impacts and (ii) the absence of a modeling framework that considers the presence of microplastics in the spillage region and their impacts on the overall weathering rate. From synthesizing essential knowledge on oil spill dynamics and identifying the knowledge gap in the literature, this review aims to enhance understanding and guide future research. Marine pollution incidents (MPI) are often a dynamic process of time and space interaction. Currently, the monitoring of MPI is basically realized by manual analysis from expert experience. Such working mode has an obvious time lag, and is not useful for timely disposal. As a result, intelligent algorithms that can make quick discovery for MPI from massive monitoring data remain a practical demand in this field. Considering that monitoring elements generally have multi-dimensional characteristics and spatiotemporal causal relationships, this work develops a spatiotemporal deep learning-based smart discovery approach for MPI from the data-driven perspective. In particular, a systematic preprocessing workflow is developed for the spatiotemporal monitoring data, which facilitates following feature extraction. Then, a spatiotemporal convolution neural network structure is developed to extract features from original spatiotemporal monitoring data. On this basis, the discovery results of MPI can be output via neural computing structures. Taking the polluting marine oil spill incident in the Bohai Sea in eastern China as a case study, this work carries out a simulation application and its result analysis. Addressing the threats of climate change, pollution, and overfishing to marine ecosystems necessitates a deeper understanding of coastal and oceanic fluid dynamics. Within this context, Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCS) emerge as essential tools for elucidating the complexities of marine fluid dynamics. Methods used to detect LCS include geometric, probabilistic, cluster-based and braid-based approaches. Advancements have been made to employ Finite-time Lyapunov Exponents (FTLE) to detect LCS due to its high efficacy, reliability and simplicity. It has been proven that the FTLE approach has provided invaluable insights into complex oceanic phenomena like shear, confluence, eddy formations, and oceanic fronts, which also enhanced the understanding of tidal-/wind-driven processes. Additionally, FTLE-based LCS were crucial in identifying barriers to contaminant dispersion and assessing pollutant distribution, aiding environmental protection and marine pollution management. FTLE-based LCS has also contributed significantly to understanding ecological interactions and biodiversity in response to environmental issues. This review identifies pressing challenges and future directions of FTLE-based LCS. Among these are the influences of external factors such as river discharges, ice formations, and human activities on ocean currents, which complicate the analysis of ocean fluid dynamics. While 2D FTLE methods have proven effective, their limitations in capturing the full scope of oceanic phenomena, especially in 3D environments, are evident. The advent of 3D LCS analysis has marked progress, yet computational demands and data quality requirements pose significant hurdles. Moreover, LCS extracted from FTLE fields involves establishing an empirical threshold that introduces considerable variability due to human judgement. Future efforts should focus on enhancing computational techniques for 3D analyses, integrating FTLE and LCS into broader environmental models, and leveraging machine learning to standardize LCS detection. To remedy Cd pollution in the ocean, macroalgae are used as a bioremediation tool because of their ability to absorb and accumulate Cd. Gracilaria bailinae has high economic and ecological value and can survive in Cd contaminated waters; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, physiological and biochemical indexes were analyzed after 1, 3, 5, or 7 days of Cd2+ exposure; further, the transcriptome of G. bailinae was examined after a 7-day exposure to a Cd2+ culture environment with Cd levels of 0 mg L-1 (cd1, control), 1 mg L-1 (cd2, low concentration), and 2.5 mg L-1 (cd3, high concentration). The results showed that in the cd2 group, G. bailinae maintained a stable RGR that did not differ significantly (P > 0.05) from that of the cd1 group. However, the soluble protein and MDA contents, as well as the activities of SOD, CAT and POD, were significantly increased (P< 0.05) compared to the cd1 group. No significant differences (P > 0.05) were found among the different Cd2+ stress durations. In contrast, compared with the cd1 group, the RGR, soluble protein content, SOD, CAT, and POD activities were significantly decreased (P< 0.05), while the MDA content was significantly increased (P< 0.05) in the cd3 group. Furthermore, significant differences (P< 0.05) were observed among the various tested Cd2+ stress durations within the cd3 group. Compared to the cd1 group, a total of 30,072 DEGs and 21,680 were identified in the cd2 and cd3 treatments, respectively. More up-regulated genes were found in cd2 group than in cd3 group. GO enrichment analysis showed that these genes were related to peptidase activity, endopeptidase activity, ion transport, peptide biosynthetic and metabolism. In addition, DEGs related to histidine metabolism and the stilbene, diarylheptane, and gingerol pathways were significantly up-regulated in the cd2 group compared to the cd3 group, which resulted in enhanced activities of antioxidant enzymes and promoted cell wall regeneration. The results of this study reveal the responsemechanism of G. bailinae to Cd2+ stress, providing valuable insights for assessing the bioremediation potential of G. bailinae for Cd-contaminated waters. Introduction: Bivalve aquaculture is an important pillar of China's fisheries, with over 1 million tonnes of scallop shells produced annually. However, most of these shells are directly discarded into the sea, leading to continuous pollution of the marine and coastal environments, especially the coast of Yantai in the Bohai Sea where a large number of discarded scallop shell have accumulated. Methods: To trace the fate of scallop shells in the ocean, this study established a model for the transport of scallop shells, coupling a two-dimensional tidal current model using the adjoint method with a Lagrangian particle model. By simulating nested tidal models, the distribution of tidal residual current in the Yantai coastal region was obtained. Then, a Lagrangian particle model was used to track the transport pathways of pollutants in the sea. Results: Driven by the residual current calculated from the tidal model with the actual situation, possible pollutant release areas were inferred. The results of Lagrangian particle tracking experiments indicate that pollutants were released from the upstream accumulation area, specifically the area near Penglai Hulushan, confirming previous speculation. Discussion: The scallop shells transport model can accurately simulate the spatiotemporal profile of scallop shells, which is helpful for managing scallop shell resources and improving the level of shell reuse. Simple Summary: Dolphins, top predators able to accumulate high levels of environmental contaminants, are used as sentinel species of marine pollution. In this study, the content of metals and metalloids (Hg, Pb, Cd, As, Se and Zn) has been evaluated through ICP-MS analysis in several organs/tissues (liver, muscle, lung, kidney and skin) of striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) and common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) stranded along the Sicilian coastlines of the Mediterranean Sea. The results confirm the exposure of both dolphin species to metals and metalloids, with the highest Hg content correlated to the pollution of the environment where they lived. Significant differences were observed in metals distribution in different organs/tissues analyzed and confirmed by the comparative analysis of metals according to sex and state of development of both dolphin species. These data underline the important role of Stenella coeruleoalba and Delphinus delphis as sentinels of the aquatic environment for assessment of the trend of metals pollution in coastal ecosystems and, indirectly, the health of aquatic species of the Mediterranean Sea. Dolphins, top predators of the aquatic food chain, are used as sentinel species of marine pollution as they are sensitive to environmental changes and able to accumulate a large content of contaminants. Several EU directives promote study of marine mammalians as bio-indicators to evaluate the presence of contaminants in the aquatic environment, such as the Mediterranean Sea, which is rich in environmental pollutants due to its geographic and geo-morphological characteristics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the content of toxic and essential metals and metalloids (Hg, Pb, Cd, As, Se and Zn), through ICP-MS analysis, in organs/tissues (liver, muscle, lung, kidney and skin) of striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) and common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) stranded along the Sicilian coastlines of the Mediterranean Sea. The results confirm the exposure of dolphins to toxic metals and metalloids, with the highest Hg levels observed in skin and liver, although a low Metal Pollution Index (MPI) was found in all samples of both dolphin species. From a comparative analysis of trace metals and metalloids according to sex and state of development, the highest levels of Cd and As were found in females vs. males and adults vs. juveniles, except for Pb in both species, and significant differences were observed between the two species, size of specimens, and organs/tissues analyzed. The highest Hg levels were correlated to those of essential metals Se and Zn, expressed as molar ratios, to evaluate the potential synergic effect of these detoxifying elements against Hg toxicity. This work employs the spatial econometric model to explore the potential relation between the condition of marine ecosystems and the rapid development of the digital economy (DE), focusing on the coastal area of China. While the environmental benefits of the DE are well studied regarding the land and atmospheric pollution, its influence on marine pollution (MP) remains underexplored, and this work aims to fill in this gap. By analyzing panel data from 42 coastal cities in China using a spatial Durbin model to examine both the direct and indirect impacts of the DE on MP, the results highlight the positive role that the DE plays in reducing MP, benefitting not only the local marine environments but also those of neighboring areas through non-negligible spatial spillover effects. In addition, we find a non-linear, inverted U-shaped relationship between the DE and MP. These results are further confirmed through extensive robustness tests. This work enriches the field of environmental economics by reporting the first empirical study on the marine benefits of the DE and offers policy recommendations to optimize digital technologies for marine environmental preservation. The goal of this study was to evaluate the trace element pollution in amarine ranching area in China based on molecular responses (expression of metallothionein and antioxidant enzyme genes), and biochemical biomarkers (metallothionein content, antioxidant enzyme activities, and malonaldehyde level) in four indicator species. We collected samples of two fish (Lateolabrax maculatus and Sebastes schlegelii), one crustacean (Charybdis japonica), andonegastropod(Rapana venosa) fromthewestern Furong Island marine ranching area and from an adjacent area in March 2022 and measuredthe traceelementcontent in these indicator species aswell as intheseawater andsediment.Wefoundthat thebioaccumulationcharacteristicsof traceelementsand the response patterns of biomarkers were species specific. Moreover, not every biomarker was significantly correlated with environmental trace element content.We then established two biomarker combinations indicative of trace element pollution in seawaterandsediment, respectively, basedonthe correlationbetweenbiomarkers and trace element contents. The selected biomarkers were integrated using integrated biomarker response version 2 (IBRv2). IBRv2 values in the studied marine ranching area were lower than those in the adjacent area. Additionally, these values were consistent with thebioaccumulation of traceelementsintheindicator species, theintegrated trace element pollution index for seawater, and the potential risk index for sediment. These results show that this multi-biomarker and multi-species IBRv2 approach provided a comprehensive diagnosis of trace element pollution in the marine ranching area. Potentially acting as a source or a sink for plastic pollution to the open ocean, nearshore waters remain a challenging context for predicting the transport and deposition of plastic debris. In this study, we present an advanced modelling approach based on the SWASH wave model and the TrackMPD (v3.0) particle transport model to investigate the transport dynamics of floating and sinking microplastics in wave-dominated environments. This approach introduces novel features such as coupling with advanced turbulence models, simulating resuspension and bedload processes, implementing advanced settling and rising velocity formulations, and enabling parallel computation. The wave laboratory experiments conducted by Forsberg et al. (2020) were simulated to validate the model's ability to reproduce the transport of diverse microplastics (varying in density, shape, and size) along a comprehensive beach profile, capturing the whole water column. Our results underscore the robustness of the proposed model, showing good agreement with experimental data. High-density microplastics moved onshore near the bed accumulating in proximity to the wave-breaking zone, while the distribution of low-density particles varied along the coastal profile depending on the particle properties. The study also sheds light on the primary mechanisms driving microplastic transport, such as Stokes drift, wave asymmetry and settling/rising velocities. Sensitivity analyses on calibration parameters further confirm the robustness of the model results and the influence of these factors on transport patterns. This research establishes the SWASH-TrackMPD approach as a valuable tool, opening avenues for future studies to contextualize laboratory findings within the complexities of real-world nearshore environments and further refine our comprehension of microplastic dynamics across different beaches and wave-climate conditions. Oil and grease (O&G) concentrations were determined on the West Coast of Sabah to identify pollution hotspots and to understand the extent of the issue. Triplicate seawater samples were collected at twenty-five stations during the northeast (November 2020 to February 2021) and southwest (July 2021 to September 2021) monsoons. QGIS software was used to create a map model, and water quality indexes were used to provide information on the status of the marine ecosystem and marine biota preservation. O&G concentrations were significantly higher (p<0.05) in certain areas of the West Coast of Sabah, ranging from 0.05±0.03 mg/L to 39.34±1.01 mg/L. According to the Malaysian Marine Water Quality Standards, O&G concentrations in the study area were categorized into Class 3, which is directly exposed to the discharge of effluent from anthropogenic activities. Hence, ecosystems in these areas were susceptible to some degree of deterioration. This suggests a potential source of pollution that requires further investigation and remediation efforts. However, the Water Quality Index revealed that the study areas were classified into moderate, acceptable, and medium status, which were still within the acceptable limit for the conservation of marine biota. The findings underscore the need for continued research and proactive measures to minimize O&G pollution and protect ecosystems in the study area. With increased awareness of oil spills, this favorable trend is projected to endure through effective management methods and effective actions to prevent O&G pollution along the West Coast of Sabah. A few studies have addressed the personal safety culture for individuals working in the marine fishing sector. The objective of this study was to identify and analyze the factors that affect the safety culture of individuals working on fishing vessels through a case study of 145 individuals in Al-Attaka fishing port in Suez who were interviewed to collect data related to the research. This study presented the relationship between training and obtaining certificates, and knowledge of safety equipment and its use, the accidents and injuries, obstacles facing individuals working in this fishing vessel, marine pollution and the extent of its impact on individuals' personal safety culture by using the SPSS program. The factors were tested using ANOVA, correlations and multi regression analysis. The finding of this study showed that the Cronbach's Alpha values for all variables were more than 0.70, and the personal safety culture of individuals working on fishing vessels was significantly influenced by their knowledge of safety equipment and the obstacles they faced regarding personal safety (P=0.00). Therefore, pollution in the marine environment has a negative significant impact on personal safety culture (P=0.012). Meanwhile, incidents related to personal safety, training and certificates did not show a significant effect on personal safety culture, and the coefficient was determined as R2=0.607. The study suggests implementing training plans for individuals in the fishing industry and establishing safety laws for those working on fishing vessels. In addition, it recommends providing clear methodologies through specialized departments and authorities to encourage individuals to recognize the importance of personal safety in their lives and the impact it has on preserving their lives and property. The purpose of this study was to examine the quality of water and fish meat of Sarpa salpa and to determine the water pollution index based on the physicochemical parameters in El-Kala waters, Algeria. The sampling of water and fish was carried out in 2020 at three stations (New Harbor, Maudite Islands, and Messida). The results of pollution index “PIj” calculation at coastal waters El-Kala were classified as lightly polluted (New Harbor and Messida waters) with the pollution index values of 3.24 to 1.33, respectively. It was important to notice that the levels of Cd, and Pb had exceeded the International Security standards in the coastal areas. The values of the bioconcentration factor “BCF” of the whole and of the dosed ETMs oscillate were between 18.31 and 175.41. At the three stations, the distribution of ETMs according to their BCF values were sequenced in the following decreasing order: cadmium˃ lead˃ zinc. The average concentrations of TME in water and fish meat decreased in the following order of stations: New Harbor> Messida> Maudite Islands, regardless of the metal. The analyses carried out made it possible to identify the samples from the New Harbor and Messida stations as the most contaminated with cadmium found in fish and cadmium and lead found in water. This thesis investigated the effectiveness of the MARPOL 73/78 Surveyor Training Course offered by Oceanwide Maritime Services Corp. and identified potential areas for enhancement. The study assessed course content, instructor qualifications, delivery methods, facilities, equipment, and learning assessment using Kirkpatrick's Model. It engaged 110 maritime professionals through structured questionnaires and client satisfaction surveys. Findings indicated that the course was highly effective in terms of content, instructor qualifications, and assessment methods while teaching materials and course duration received lower scores. Recommendations included updating course content, increasing hands-on training, upgrading facilities, diversifying delivery methods, enhancing assessment techniques, extending course duration, and providing support for complex topics. In conclusion, the MARPOL 73/78 Surveyor's Training Course is highly effective but needs improvements in teaching materials, course segments, and regular content updates to maintain training quality and relevance. Particulate and gaseous emissions were studied from a large two-stroke slow-speed diesel engine equipped with an open-loop scrubber, installed on a 78,200 metric tonnes (deadweight) containership, under real operation. This paper presents the on-board emission measurements conducted upstream and downstream of the scrubber with heavy fuel oil (HFO) and ultra-low sulfur fuel oil (ULSFO). Particle emissions were examined under various dilution ratios and temperature conditions, and with two thermal treatment setups, involving a thermodenuder (TD) and a catalytic stripper (CS). Our results show a 75% SO2 reduction downstream of the scrubber with the HFO to emission-compliant levels, while the use of the ULSFO further decreased SO2 levels. The operation of the scrubber produced higher particle number levels compared to engine-out, attributed to the condensational growth of nanometer particle cores, salt and the formation of sulfuric acid particles in the smaller size range, induced by the scrubber. The use of a TD and a CS eliminates volatiles but can generate new particles when used in high-sulfur conditions. The results of this study contribute to the generally limited understanding of the particulate and gaseous emission performance of open-loop scrubbers in ships and could feed into emission and air quality models for estimating marine pollution impacts. Subtropical coral reefs such as the lagoonal reefs of Norfolk Island in the remote South Pacific are vastly understudied, with many benthic species unrecorded in the scientific literature. Here we report on ascidian populations from 2021 to 2023 at Norfolk Islands inshore reefs. Quantitative assessments spanning that period were conducted to assess ascidian presence, cover, and benthic interactions. We show ascidian cover remained persistently low and stable across the lagoonal reefs during the study period. We find adjacent reef site, Cemetery Bay showed variation in ascidian cover over time, where we measure a 3.2-fold increase in cover over 2 years. Ascidians were associated primarily with sand and sediment substrates at all reef locations. Recorded interactions between hard corals and ascidians were low. This study provides valuable insights into the population dynamics of ascidians within subtropical reef ecosystems. Ongoing ascidian population monitoring can provide a comprehensive understanding of ascidian dynamics whilst also providing insight of theimpact of anthropogenic stressors on benthic communities. Additionally, this work explores innovative approaches that yield fresh insights into combating plastic pollution across various sectors. Emphasizing the importance of a global plastics treaty, the article underscores its potential to galvanize collaborative efforts in mitigating MP pollution's deleterious effects on marine ecosystems. Successful implementation of such a treaty could revolutionize the plastics economy, steering it towards a circular, less polluting model operating within planetary boundaries. Failure to act decisively risks exacerbating the scourge of MP pollution and its attendant repercussions on both humanity and the environment. Central to this endeavor are the formulation, content, and execution of the treaty itself, which demand careful consideration. Oil spill detection plays an important role in marine environment protection. The technique of global navigation satellite system-reflectometry (GNSS-R) has the advantage of a short revisit time, which could help with timely cleanup of marine oil pollution. The conventional GNSS-R oil spill detection algorithm can resolve only the dielectric constant of oil based on power ratio measurements, while that of water cannot be realized. This is because the dielectric constant of water is much larger than that of oil such that the range of the equation used in the conventional algorithm is inadequate. To resolve this problem, we proposed a new algorithm containing a new equation with a larger scope, which has never been applied previously to GNSS-R oil spill detection. We derived a lookup method to resolve the dielectric constant of both oil and water. To validate our method, a drone-borne GNSS-R experiment based on dual-frequency QZSS reflection signals was conducted on 17 July 2023 using experimental pools simulating oil spills. Raw IF data in the L1 and L5 bands, collected using dual antennas and a data recorder, were processed using a software-defined receiver to deduce the power ratios and SNR of the GNSS signals. Results showed that the proposed algorithm is capable of resolving the dielectric constants of the reflected surface. The coastal zone, which is the interface between land and sea, is hydrodynamically very active due to the complex interactions of various hydrological controls and variable‐density fluids. These forces vary over time, resulting in a state of dynamic equilibrium in the system. The major hydrological processes in coastal aquifer systems are salt water intrusion and submarine groundwater discharge, which are interdependent. Monitoring these complex processes is crucial for sustainable coastal zone management but poses a significant research challenge. In this study, we demonstrate the effectiveness of non‐invasive geophysical techniques, specifically the time‐lapse electrical resistivity imaging method, in conjunction with groundwater monitoring, for monitoring coastal groundwater dynamics in an unconfined aquifer at varying time scales and hydrogeological settings present at formerly glaciated sites worldwide. We generated two‐dimensional baseline salt water intrusion maps for the test site, located on the coast of Rhode Island, USA. The time‐lapse electrical resistivity survey method enables the rapid estimation of fresh groundwater discharge. Our approach offers insight into the mechanisms and seasonably variable salt water–freshwater interactions in unconfined heterogeneous aquifers. Although the results are site‐specific, their implications are broad and may stimulate other studies related to sea to land pollution (sea water intrusion) and land to sea pollution (groundwater discharge) in heterogeneous coastal aquifer settings. The seascapes of Small Island Developing States are at risk from anthropogenic pollution. To implement effective seascape management, there is a need to better understand the threats to the seascape, subsequent impacts and associated stakeholder perceptions. This study used a systematic literature review, online survey and follow-up interviews to identify the main threats and impacts to the seascape and analyze associated perceptions of stakeholders, using Mauritius as a case study. The key threats were found to be oil spills, anthropogenic marine debris, coastal development, tourism, poor environmental management, and inadequate enforcement of legislation. Associated perception data showed a high awareness of increasing pollution, some awareness of the impacts and a general consensus that the seascape is poorly managed. Stricter law enforcement and increased education were suggested by stakeholders to improve seascape management. Oil tankers carry large quantities of liquefied chemical cargoes that are flammable, explosive and/or toxic. Hence, a collision with a tanker that causes an oil spill poses a severe threat to the marine environment and human life. In order to quantify and analyze the risk factors of ship collision oil spill, this paper adopts a combination of knowledge element (KE) and dynamic Bayesian networks (DBN) to conduct an emergency scenario study based on the “scenario-response” model. Firstly, the key elements of “accident scenario state, human factors, emergency measures, and emergency goals” are selected to represent the accident. Then, the mechanism of accident evolution is analyzed according to the case, and DBN is used to build a scenario model of oil spills from tanker collisions. Finally, to verify the importance of human factors and the scientificity of emergency measures, the oil spill accident due to the collision between the two vessels known as MT “SANCHI” and MV “CF CRYSTAL” is used as an example for analysis. The accident model deduction results are in line with reality, and the research results help relevant decision makers to understand the deduction process of oil spills from tanker collisions, which is of great significance to enhance the safety of oil tanker shipping and marine environmental protection. The toxic impact of microplastics (MPs) in the terrestrial and aquatic environment has recently become a global problem. The Bay of Bengal coasts is an important bio-diverse ecosystem, which help the people for their sound living and gather natural resources. However, the distribution, impact, source and transport mechanism, and policy to take initiatives for MPs pollution control at the Bay of Bengal coasts' have received less attention. Therefore, this review summarizes MPs' distribution and their source in the Bay of Bengal coasts' ecosystems. Current knowledge extends the impacts of MP on this vital ecosystem, existing policy, and further recommendations to mitigate MPs contamination are critically assessed in this study. Furthermore, mechanisms of MP on human health are also highlighted with the identification of current research gaps and future study suggestions. Given the escalating plastic usage and the prevalence of important sea products globally, there is a pressing need to prioritize research efforts on the impacts of MPs on the Bay of Bengal coasts from a long-term perspective. Knowledge obtained in this way would inform the scientists, stakeholders, and policy makers in such a way as to help them mitigate impacts of the micro- and nano-plastic legacy at this region. Hydrocarbon is one of the primary organic pollutants that contaminate seawater. Most hydrocarbons which pollute the sea waters of Indonesia are the constituents of diesel fuel. This condition emphasizes the need to develop a bioremediation strategy for diesel fuel pollution in the country. A successful plan for bioremediation is primarily determined by the choice of the bacterial agent, which can be isolated from the polluted seawater. Furthermore, the setup must consider the characteristics and capability of the bacterial isolates to degrade diesel fuel. This study thus aimed to analyze the potential of Bacillus cereus isolated from the polluted seawater of Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia, as a bioremediation agent. The results of bacterial density, pH measurements, TPH and GC-MS assays indicated that the locally isolated Bacillus cereus could significantly reduce the hydrocarbon concentrations. More importantly, after 14 days of bioremediation, the polluting diesel fuel was categorized as biodegradable based on the BOD:COD ratio. Marine pollution, a major disturbance to the sustainable use of oceans, is becoming more prevalent around the world. Multidimensional and sustainable ocean governance have become increasingly focused on managing, reducing, and eliminating marine pollution. Artificial intelligence has been used more and more in recent years to monitor and control marine pollution. This systematic literature review, encompassing studies from the Web of Science and Scopus databases, delineates the extensive role of artificial intelligence in marine pollution management, revealing a significant surge in research and application. This review aims to provide information and a better understanding of the application of artificial intelligence in marine pollution. In marine pollution, 57% of AI applications are used for monitoring, 24% for management, and 19% for prediction. Three areas are emphasized: (1) detecting and responding to oil pollution, (2) monitoring water quality and its practical application, and (3) monitoring and identifying plastic pollution. Each area benefits from the unique capabilities of artificial intelligence. If the scientific community continues to explore and refine these technologies, the convergence of artificial intelligence and marine pollution may yield more sophisticated solutions for environmental conservation. Although artificial intelligence offers powerful tools for the treatment of marine pollution, it does have some limitations. Future research recommendations include (1) transferring experimental outcomes to industrial applications in a broader sense; (2) highlighting the cost-effective advantages of AI in marine pollution control; and (3) promoting the use of AI in the legislation and policy-making about controlling marine pollution. Drifting fish aggregating devices (DFADs) can significantly enhance fishing efficiency and capability. Conventional drifting devices are prone to degradation in harsh marine environments, leading to marine waste or pollution. In this study, we develop a biodegradable DFAD (Bio-DFAD) to minimise negative impacts on marine ecology. To investigate the hydrodynamic performance of the proposed device, numerical modelling involving the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equation has been conducted, in which a realisable k–ε model is applied to consider the turbulence effect. The response amplitude operators, which are key parameters for design, are obtained for heave and pitch motions. The hydrodynamic performance is found to be sensitive to the relative length, relative diameter, and wave steepness, but they are less sensitive to the relative current velocity. To scrutinize the characteristics of wave–current loads on a bridge shuttle-shaped cap–pile foundation, a 1:125 test model was considered in a laboratory flume. The inline, transverse and vertical wave–current forces acting on the shuttle-shaped cap–pile group model were measured considering both random waves and a combination of random waves with a current. The experimental results have shown that the wave–current forces can be well correlated with the wave height, the wavelength, the current velocity, the incident direction and the water level in the marine environment. An increase in the current velocity can lead to a sharp increase in the inline and transverse wave–current forces, while the vertical wave-current force decreases. With the expansion of globalization and increasing demand for resource exploitation, the ocean economy has emerged as a critical support for economic growth and a significant concern for many. However, the exploitation of marine resources often leads to ecological damage and environmental pollution, seriously threatening the long-term viability of the marine economy. Measures must be implemented to balance ecological protection and economic development for sustainable growth in the marine sector. This investigation synthesizes over a decade's worth of data from various coastal cities, incorporating insights from national databases, international reports, and scholarly articles, resulting in an analysis of more than 500 data points. Through the application of a rigorous quantitative approach and a dual fixed-effect model, the study delves into the dynamics between ocean governance and economic development. By analyzing a broad and representative dataset, the research provides an exhaustive overview of global ocean governance frameworks and the current state of the marine economy. The statistical analyses unveil the complexity and diversity of factors influencing the development and governance of marine economies. This paper explores the interplay between marine economic development and ocean governance, evaluating the impact of governance on marine economic progression within the context of environmental optimization. Purpose: Marine plastic pollution (MPP) is increasing in recent times because of the high usage of plastic products. Green consumption behaviour (GCB) gaining attention as effective approach to achieving sustainable source reduction of plastic pollution, which negatively affects both human pollution and marine biodiversity and ecosystem. Although, Higher Education (HE) students are key stakeholders in addressing environmental issues, including MPP, there is limited empirical research in Ghana on factors influencing HE students' GCB. This study, in an endeavour to bridge the gap, used the revised theory of planned behaviour (TPB) framework to investigate the factors influencing higher-education students' green consumption behaviour in the Ghanaian context. Specifically, the purpose of the study is to examine the interplay of consumer novelty seeking (CNS), environmental concern (EC), perceived behavioural control and social influence on green consumption behaviour among higher-education students in Ghana. The study also explored the moderating role of gender in the relationship between CNS and green consumption behaviour. Design/methodology/approach: This study used quantitative approach to obtain data from a sample of 233 students at the University of Cape Coast and used the partial least squares structural equation modelling approach for the data analysis. Findings: The findings provide valuable insights, highlighting the important role of CNS and ECs in driving higher education students' green consumption behaviour in Ghana. This study also found a revealing role for gender as a moderator in the relationship between CNS and green consumption behaviour, with females exhibiting a more pronounced response to CNS in influencing green consumption behaviour. On the contrary, the authors found a non-significant impact of perceived behavioural control and social influence. Research limitations/implications: Although this study presents results that provide valuable insights for policy and practical implications, it has some limitations worth mentioning for future research directions. Firstly, the participants sampled for this study comprised only higher education students from the University of Cape Coast in Ghana, which may limit the applicability of the findings to other student populations at various universities in Ghana and beyond. Moreover, the exclusion of non-students who are considered as "Generation Z" (i.e. born within 1995–2010) may narrow the scope of generalisability in the context of young consumers' green consumption behaviour in Ghana. To enhance the generalisability of future studies, it is recommended that the scope of this study be extended. Furthermore, it should be noted that this study primarily measured higher education students' green consumption behaviour based on self-reported data. Therefore, future research could adopt alternative approaches, such as non-self-reported measures or experimental data so to reduce the complexities and the gap that may exist between attitudes and behaviour. Practical implications: These results provide valuable insights for policymakers, educators and environmental advocates to develop targeted initiatives that resonate with Ghanaian higher education students to foster green consumption practices and contribute to global efforts against marine plastic pollution. Originality/value: The novelty of this study lies in the decision to propose a TPB model by including variables like CNS and EC that are believed to positively shape attitudes towards green consumption behaviour. The rationale for examining these variables is grounded in the belief that they are appropriate factors that may predict students' green consumer behaviour, which may serve as a potential solution to marine plastic pollution. Anthropogenic pressures threaten biodiversity, necessitating conservation actions founded on robust ecological models. However, prevailing models inadequately capture the spatiotemporal variation in environmental pressures faced by species with high mobility or complex life histories, as data are often aggregated across species' life histories or spatial distributions. We highlight the limitations of static models for dynamic species and incorporate life history variation and spatial distributions for species and stressors into a trait-based vulnerability and impact model. We use green sea turtles in the Greater Caribbean Region to demonstrate how vulnerability and anthropogenic impact for a dynamic species change across four life stages. By incorporating life stages into a trait-based vulnerability model, we observed life stage-specific vulnerabilities that were otherwise unnoticed when using an aggregated trait value set. Early life stages were more vulnerable to some stressors, such as inorganic pollution or marine heat waves, and less vulnerable to others, such as bycatch. Incorporating spatial distributions of stressors and life stages revealed impacts differ for each life stage across spatial areas, emphasizing the importance of stage-specific conservation measures. Our approach showcases the importance of incorporating dynamic processes into ecological models and will enable better and more targeted conservation actions for species with complex life histories and high mobility. With the continuous increase in global mariculture production and aquaculture areas, the environmental pollution caused by the mariculture industry is becoming increasingly serious. Faced with environmental issues, countries worldwide have formulated environmental regulations to scientifically intervene in marine environmental pollution issues and promote the green development of the mariculture industry. However, we must determine if strict environmental regulations can effectively promote the green development of the mariculture industry. This article uses the inter-provincial panel data of China's coastal areas from 2003 to 2019 as a sample. We use the entropy-technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution method to measure the intensity of environmental regulation in China's coastal areas and the level of green development of the mariculture industry. On this basis, an economic geography nested matrix was selected to construct a spatial panel econometric model to empirically explore the impact of environmental regulations on the green development of the mariculture industry. This approach also allows us to examine the heterogeneity of the impact of different types of environmental regulations on the green development of the mariculture industry. The research results indicate that environmental regulations have a "U-shaped" impact on the green development of the local mariculture industry, while they have an inverted "U-shaped" impact on the green development of the nearby mariculture industry. Furthermore, heterogeneity exists in the impact of different types of environmental regulations on the green development of the mariculture industry. Based on the research results, this article proposes policy recommendations from the perspectives of flexibly adjusting the intensity of environmental regulations, accelerating the development of voluntary-based environmental regulations, and regulating competition among local governments, which can provide decision-making references for the government to adjust environmental regulation policies and improve the level of green development in the mariculture industry. The benthic foraminiferal community is an excellent bio-indicator of pollution in coastal and marginal marine settings. Their abundance, diversity and its relationship with environmental parameters, viz. grain size, organic carbon (Corg) and trace metals concentration, from the surface sediment layer of the southwestern shelf of the Bay of Bengal, have been used to understand the marine pollution in this study. A total of 32 surface sediment samples were collected at various water depths.The samples were analysed for grain size distribution, organic matter (OM), foraminiferal and trace metals studies. Statistical analyses such as correlation matrix, PCA (Principal Component Analysis) and cluster analysis show that the foraminiferal species composition is significantly influenced by the organic carbon (Corg), Co, Pb, Zn, Cr, and Ni concentrations. The dominance of stress-tolerant species, viz. Ammonia beccarii, Ammonia tepida, Nonion faba, Bulimina marginata, Bolivina robusta, Elphidium craticulatum and Elphidium advenum, as well as less species diversity, demonstrates the elevated Corg and trace metal pollution in the marine environment. Microplastics are emerging as prominent pollutants across the globe. Oceans are becoming major sinks for these pollutants, and their presence is widespread in coastal regions, oceanic surface waters, water column, and sediments. Studies have revealed that microplastics cause serious threats to the marine ecosystem as well as human beings. In the past few years, many research efforts have focused on studying different aspects relating to microplastic pollution of the oceans. This review summarizes sources, migration routes, and ill effects of marine microplastic pollution along with various conventional as well as advanced methods for microplastics analysis and control. However, various knowledge gaps in detection and analysis require attention in order to understand the sources and transport of microplastics, which is critical to deploying mitigation strategies at appropriate locations. Systematic and scientific assessments on heavy metal pollution are greatly important to protecting the coastal eco-environment. In this paper, the spatial distribution, pollution degree, ecological toxicity and possible sources of eight heavy metal elements collected from the 126 marine and 715 terrestrial surface sediments surrounding Dingzi Bay were analyzed by obtaining concentration measurements. The results revealed that the concentrations of heavy metals followed a pattern: inner bay > terrestrial areas > outer bay. Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Hg were found to accumulate in fine particles (<0.063 mm), while As showed an association with specific particles (>0.25 mm and <0.016 mm). Spatial pollution patterns varied from non-polluted to low pollution levels overall, with localized contamination by individual elements. In addition to natural sources, four types of anthropogenic pollution were identified in the marine and terrestrial settings. Agricultural pollution, characterized by As predominance, exerted profound effects on both terrestrial and marine environments. Industrial pollution, featuring Hg dominance, was widespread in land environment and predominantly linked to atmospheric deposition. Traffic pollution, marked by elevated Pb and Cd, was concentrated around factories and densely populated areas. Maritime pollution, comprising Hg, Cr, Cd, and Zn, primarily occurred in the nearshore areas outside the bay. Coastal eutrophication is a major issue of marine pollution. The main factors controlling eutrophication must be identified to ensure effective marine environmental management according to the respective local conditions. Zhanjiang Bay (ZJB), located northwest of the South China Sea, is a semi-closed bay influenced by complex water flows and the development of surrounding cities. In this study, we investigated the development of nutrient concentrations and compositions in ZJB seawater over the past 20 years and the factors influencing eutrophication based on several field investigations from 2006 to 2022 and historical data. High concentrations of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) were the main contributors to the severe long-term eutrophication in ZJB; however, light eutrophication was observed in the outer bay, primarily caused by chemical oxygen demand (COD) and DIP. The primary sources of COD and nutrients were riverine freshwater, sewage outfalls, mariculture and domestic effluents carried by rivers. Tidal effects diluted the nutrient concentrations in the bay with seawater from the outer bay, thereby playing a key role in nutrient redistribution. The DIN: DIP ratio of ZJB showed long-term nitrogen restriction and excess phosphorus, primarily owing to mariculture activities. Marine undertakings can exert various impacts on water quality. Eliminating illegal aquaculture and launching aquaculture tailwater treatment can improve water quality, whereas practices such as channel dredging may worsen it. Background: Prioritisation of chemical pollutants is a major challenge for environmental managers and decision-makers alike, which is essential to help focus the limited resources available for monitoring and mitigation actions on the most relevant chemicals. This study extends the original NORMAN prioritisation scheme beyond target chemicals, presenting the integration of semi-quantitative data from retrospective suspect screening and expansion of existing exposure and risk indicators. The scheme utilises data retrieved automatically from the NORMAN Database System (NDS), including candidate substances for prioritisation, target and suspect screening data, ecotoxicological effect data, physico-chemical data and other properties. Two complementary workflows using target and suspect screening monitoring data are applied to first group the substances into six action categories and then rank the substances using exposure, hazard and risk indicators. The results from the 'target' and 'suspect screening' workflows can then be combined as multiple lines of evidence to support decision-making on regulatory and research actions. Results: As a proof-of-concept, the new scheme was applied to a combined dataset of target and suspect screening data. To this end, > 65,000 substances on the NDS, of which 2579 substances supported by target wastewater monitoring data, were retrospectively screened in 84 effluent wastewater samples, totalling > 11 million data points. The final prioritisation results identified 677 substances as high priority for further actions, 7455 as medium priority and 326 with potentially lower priority for actions. Among the remaining substances, ca. 37,000 substances should be considered of medium priority with uncertainty, while it was not possible to conclude for 19,000 substances due to insufficient information from target monitoring and uncertainty in the identification from suspect screening. A high degree of agreement was observed between the categories assigned via target analysis and suspect screening-based prioritisation. Suspect screening was a valuable complementary approach to target analysis, helping to prioritise thousands of substances that are insufficiently investigated in current monitoring programmes. Conclusions: This updated prioritisation workflow responds to the increasing use of suspect screening techniques. It can be adapted to different environmental compartments and can support regulatory obligations, including the identification of specific pollutants in river basins and the marine environments, as well as the confirmation of environmental occurrence levels predicted by modelling tools. The Arctic region is facing growing demands for energy to support various economic activities, while also grappling with the profound impacts of climate change. Black carbon particulate matter emissions reduction is a key objective to mitigate the susceptibility of the Arctic's ecosystems to the impact of climate change. Nuclear power has been suggested as a potential source of clean energy to decarbonize maritime transport in the Arctic. However, although the operation of nuclear-powered vessels and floating nuclear power platforms in the region ensures energy security and reduces black carbon emissions, it may pose significant risks of nuclear material release and radiological accidents and raise concerns about improper radioactive waste disposal. In regulating these nuclear-powered vessels and floating nuclear power platforms in the Arctic, the existing international legal regime faced a series of challenges. This research employs a method of policy analysis to analyze these legal challenges and explores how the international community could work together to cope with the challenges that arise in the Arctic during the operation of nuclear-powered vessels and platforms for maritime decarbonization purposes. Ship-source pollution is one of the important contributors to marine environment pollution. Because the legal status of the Arctic shipping routes is not clear, there is a considerable degree of dispute in the application of the rules on the prevention and control of ship-source pollution. The increased melting of sea ice undermines the legal legitimacy of the "ice-covered areas" clause under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The conflict between the application of the Polar Code and "ice-covered areas" will also reach an initial conclusion in the context of melting sea ice. However, the inadequacy of ship-source pollution rules in the Polar Code hampers its application, which has led to a negative impact on the more active role in the governance of pollution from Arctic shipping. For replying to the Challenges in the prevention of ship-source pollution in Arctic shipping routes, the relevant rules of the Polar Code need to be further improved, while a more binding HFO ban according to ship types needs to be applied. Therefore, a more important role in the future Arctic governance mechanism will be played by the enhanced enforcement of the Polar Code, meanwhile, the target for uniform international regulation of preventing and controlling ship-source pollution in Arctic shipping routes should be achieved.
