Spatial distribution analyses of fossil bones are often used in cave taphonomy for i) assessing directly the size of a given fossil population and ii) indirectly, for palaeo-environmental reconstructions. Urşilor Cave from northwestern Romania hosts one of the richest MIS 3 cave bear bone assemblages of Europe, and as the nature of the bone deposition was not settled yet, the study of the size of cave bear population and the distribution of the skeletal element was needed. More than 11,500 cave bear skeletal elements (NISPtotal = 11, 511), derived from 105 individuals (MNIcanines = 105) were extracted from the palaeontological excavation (ca. 9 m2) from the lower level of the cave and documented (photographed, mapped, and topographically measured). Almost 58% of all analyzed bones and teeth are concentrated in three quadrants of the excavation (C1, D1 and E2); the bones’ density decreases in the D4 and A1 quadrants. Based on the obtained results on the spatial distribution of the cave bear bones, we assume that the studied bone assemblage should be now regarded as a consequence of a cave trap (deposition in situ) while the hypothesis of fluvial transport (previously assumed) becomes questionable.

The authors provide the centralized data about the Romanian caves with endemic fauna, based on all reliable bibliographic sources (as quoted in text and cited in the chapter references) and based on their research activity. The complete list of the Romanian caves with endemic cave-dwelling arthropod species identified up to the subspecies level is presented. The aim of the present paper is to provide an easy way to consult the aforementioned species list and reliable information for future actions to protect the caves, based on biospeleological data in Romania.

Ascunsa Cave is situated in the Mehedinţi Mountains and is part of the Isverna cave system. The cave was discovered in the late 1970s by members of the Focul Viu Caving Club, who surveyed the first 13.5 m of it. Since 2008, the “Emil Racoviţa” Institute of Speleology and the Underwater and Cave Exploration Group explored and surveyed 691 m of passages totaling 185 m of vertical development. Studies based on stalagmites from this cave revealed the climate evolutions during the last glacial cycle.

The Ursilor Cave (NW Romania) is a famous cave bear paleontological site hosting an important Late Pleistocene faunal assemblage and subject to systematic excavation works. To better understand the origin of fossil assemblages, the sedimentary history of the cave must be reconstructed. We conducted a series of investigations on various cave deposits which included sedimentology and grain-size analyses, U-series dating of speleothems, OSL dating of sediments, and AMS radiocarbon dating of fossil remains. The results allowed for the identification of several major chronological controls for the evolution of the cave during the last 300,000 years. Five evolutionary stages or key-moments were dated, and a tentative speleogenetic scenario is presented. The combined numerical dates and sedimentological study show that the evolution of the cave was more complex than previously thought. In particular, the fossil accumulation was related to a succession of rapid flooding events at ∼47–40 ka. Alternating depositional and erosional phases have occurred since at least 210 ka complicating the sediment structures. The results suggest that the upper and lower levels of the cave may have been functioned occasionally as hydrologically separated karst systems and that the animal populations from what is now a single cave system may not necessarily be synchronous. This case study shows that reconstructing sedimentary history of a given cave is crucial for the correct understanding of its thanatocenosis.

SUMMARYThe distribution of subterranean copepods may reflect the persistence of cave assemblages in relation to the environmental health of the overlying landscape. Areas supporting groundwater fauna were established by modelling the persistence of seven copepod species using a geographical information system (GIS). Environmental drivers were found to influence subterranean copepod distribution in the caves of the Romanian Carpathians. Habitat-based modelling, using ordinary least squares regression and geographically-weighted regression to identify the significant predictors explaining copepod habitat suitability, predicted suitable areas for the selected taxa. The most constant predictor was land cover, a measure of human impact and climate change, followed by precipitation and altitude. The model performed well for the majority of analysed taxa, and the areas predicted as suitable for narrowly distributed taxa overlapped with observed distributions. GIS facilitated the prediction of suitable habitat, and also enabled spatial autocorrelation to be tested. The results of this study demonstrate the importance of sustainable management of the terrestrial surface in limestone areas in conserving copepod biodiversity.

We present here the results of a four year environmental monitoring program at Ascunsă Cave, Romania, intended to understand how climate information is transferred through the karst system and archived in speleothems. The air temperature inside the cave is around 7 °C, with slight differences between the upper and lower parts of the main passage. Relative humidity measurements were hampered by condensation on the capacitive sensors we used, thus we consider it to be close to 100 %. The local meteoric water line (δ2H = 7.7 δ18O + 10.1), constructed using monthly aggregated rainfall samples, is similar to the global one, revealing the Atlantic as the strongly dominant vapor source. The δ2H excess values, as high as 17 ‰, indicate that precipitation has an important evaporative component, possibly given by moisture recycling over the European continent. CO2 concentrations in cave air have a seasonal signal, with summer minima and winter maxima. This might be indicative of an organic matter reservoir deep within the epikarst that continues to decompose over the winter, possibly modulated by seasonal differences in cave ventilation. The maximum values of CO2 show a rise after the summer of 2014, from around 2000 ppm to about 3500 ppm. An analogous rise is seen in drip water stable isotopes and chemical elements such as Sr and Mg. The variability of stable isotopes and chemical elements is similar at all points inside the cave, indicating that they are draining a homogenous reservoir. Using two newly designed types of water/air equilibrators we were able to determine drip water dissolved CO2, by measuring its concentration in the equilibrator headspace and then using Henry's law to calculate its concentration in water. This opens the possibility of continuous data logging using infrared technology without the need of costly and less reliable chemical determinations.

This paper presents monitoring results obtained using digital, automated and optical fiber extensometers for ground surface displacement measurements in two case-studies located in the Buzau Carpathians and Subcarpathians, Romania. The main objective of this research is to accurately estimate the landslide displacement rates in order to be able to predict the time of landslide reactivation. In the case of the Colţi Church landslide (the Buzau Carpathians), correlations between displacement and precipitation are reported. In the case of the Maguricea landslide (the Buzau Subcarpathians), results obtained using a conventional extensometer (automated type) are compared with those obtained using an optical fiber system. Differences of 0.11mm/day were noted between displacement rates obtained using a conventional extensometer and an optical fiber system.

The Sibiciu Basin is located in Romania between the Buzau Mountains and the Buzau Subcarpathians (Curvature Carpathians and Subcarpathians). The geology of the basin consists of Paleogene flysch deposits represented by an alternation of sandstones, marls, clays and schists and Neogene deposits represented by marls, clays and sands. The area is affected by different types of landslides (shallow, medium-deep and deep-seated failures). In Romania, in the last decades, direct and indirect methods have been applied for landslide susceptibility assessment. The most utilized before 2000 were based on qualitative approaches. This study evaluates the landslide susceptibility in the Sibiciu Basin using a bivariate statistical analysis and an index of entropy. A landslide inventory map was prepared, and a susceptibility estimate was assessed based on the following parameters which influence the landslide occurrence: slope angle, slope aspect, curvature, lithology and land use. The landslide susceptibility map was divided into five classes showing very low to very high landslide susceptibility areas.

The Mehedinţi Plateau represents an area highly marked by the intensity of the karst processes and by the diversity of the exokarst and endokarst features. The analyzed area includes two parallel limestone bars, developed on the Carpathian structures direction (NNE-SSW). The geological and geomorphological research, guided by a working protocol similar to that of the EPIK method, highlighted the role played by the lithology, structure, tectonics, epikarst and protective cover, related to the infiltration conditions, flow parameters and impact area of a potential contamination event; also, we carried on microtectonic studies on the Bulba Valley, Peşterii Hill, Podul Natural Cave and Bulba Cave. In addition to the results obtained following the EPIK method protocol, we bring forward data concerning the water quality, performing hydrogeochemical analyses on water samples collected from the main sources in the region. Our research has been focused on TDS, on cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, NH4+) and on anions (HCO3-, Cl-). We conclude by modelling the cumulative abundance and the species richness of the harvestmen (Opiliones) in the studied area, under different degrees of human impact on habitats

The karst geosystems functioning frequently implies very quick mass and energy transfers, which make them highly sensitive to any natural or anthropogenic disturbance. Therefore, the groundwater resources, threatened by agricultural and industrial pollution, should be carefully exploited, taking into account the intrinsic vulnerability of the region. This paper aims to present the results of the geological, geomorphological and hydrogeochemical studies carried out in the Banat Mountains (Romania), in order to widely assess and map the vulnerability of the most exposed karst aquifers. Following the principles of the EPIK method and using GIS, we were able to delineate upon degree 4 vulnerability classes (low, moderate, high, very high). Moreover, each unit has been assigned to a specific protection framework, comprising suitable management solutions, designed for environmental managers.

The Danube has long been considered a "highway" for the prehistoric hominin colonization of Europe. However, its role in the two most significant episodes of colonization e the first peopling of Europe in the LowereMiddle Pleistocene, and Late Pleistocene colonization by anatomically modern humans e is presently a matter of hypothesis based on the locations of only a few key archaeological sites. Much of Eastern Europe has a particularly low density of known sites, in part due to the thick loess deposits blanketing the region which provide a challenging environment for archaeological survey. Our project, the Lower Danube Survey (LoDanS), aims to discover new Paleolithic sites and to reassess previously identified sites in the southeastern Romanian loess steppe between the Danube River and the Black Sea. Here we present the preliminary results of our first three seasons (2010e2012) of geoarchaeological survey and excavation in the lower Danube basin. We revisit and reexamine the lithostratigraphic and lithic data available from previously known sites in the region. We also provide new luminescence ages from one of these sites, Cuza Voda!, and confirm its previously proposed Middle Paleolithic antiquity. We describe three newly discovered stratified Paleolithic sites, which together with existing sites confirm occupation of the Romanian loess steppe during the Lower, Middle and Paleolithic. Additional pre- liminary work at a nearby geological loess profile provides valuable paleoenvironmental context for hominin occupation of the region throughout the Pleistocene. Our investigations elucidate strategies and prospects for new site discoveries in open loess steppe landscapes such as those of Eastern Europe.
