Abstract

The problem of this research is to determine the economic value that the people from Eldorado assign to hydrological services of the native forests. The general objective of this project is to evaluate the hydrological environmental services that native forests provide to the Schwarzenberg watershed, for a forest restore project. The following activities have already been developed: a compilation of antecedents; characterization of the present watershed´s condition; the determination of protection services provided by the native forests; and the economic valuation of environmental service, using the contingent valuation method. The results indicate that the eldoradenses have assigned a monetary value of 2,025 pesos per hectare per year to the environmental service, and the conclusion was that without the surrounding protective forest, the maximum flow and the torrential condition of the basin increase. Families are willing to pay for the hydrological environmental services that native forests provide to the basin; and it is recommended to do more studies to outline a payments system for environmental services, considering that the Schwarzenbergs watershed drains into the Piray Mini stream, a short distance upstream from the outlet of the public water supply system of Eldorado.

Abstract

El problema de investigación es determinar el valor económico que los eldoradenses asignan a los servicios hidrológicos del bosque nativo. El objetivo general del proyecto es valorar los servicios ambientales hidrológicos que brindan los bosques nativos a la cuenca del arroyo Schwarzenberg, para un proyecto de restauración de los bosques. Se desarrollaron las actividades siguientes: Recopilación de antecedentes; caracterización de la situación de la cuenca; determinación de los servicios de protección que prestan los bosques nativos; y valoración económica del servicio ambiental, mediante el método de valoración contingente. Los resultados indican que los eldoradenses asignaron un valor monetario de 2.025 pesos por hectárea y por año al servicio ambiental, y se concluyó que sin bosque protector, aumentan el caudal máximo y el estado torrencial de la cuenca. Las familias están dispuestas a pagar por los servicios ambientales hidrológicos que brindan los bosques nativos a la cuenca vertiente; y se recomienda realizar más estudios para diseñar un sistema de pagos por servicios ambientales, considerando que esta cuenca hidrográfica desagua en el arroyo Piray Miní, a poca distancia aguas arriba de la toma del sistema público de abastecimiento de agua de Eldorado.

Abstract

We consider an extended notion of reinforcement learning in which the environment can simulate the agent and base its outputs on the agent's hypothetical behavior. Since good performance usually requires paying attention to whatever things the environment's outputs are based on, we argue that for an agent to achieve on-average good performance across many such extended environments, it is necessary for the agent to self-reflect. Thus weighted-average performance over the space of all suitably well-behaved extended environments could be considered a way of measuring how self-reflective an agent is. We give examples of extended environments and introduce a simple transformation which experimentally seems to increase some standard RL agents' performance in a certain type of extended environment., Comment: 24 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, 2 listings

Abstract

Diamond nanoparticles (nanodiamonds) can transport active drugs in cultured cells as well as in vivo. However, in the latter case, methods allowing to determine their bioavailability accurately are still lacking. Nanodiamond can be made fluorescent with a perfectly stable emission and a lifetime ten times longer than the one of tissue autofluorescence. Taking advantage of these properties, we present an automated quantification method of fluorescent nanodiamonds (FND) in histological sections of mouse organs and tumor, after systemic injection. We use a home-made time-delayed fluorescence microscope comprising a custom pulsed laser source synchronized on the master clock of a gated intensified array detector. This setup allows to obtain ultra-high-resolution images 120 Mpixels of whole mouse organs sections, with subcellular resolution and single-particle sensitivity. As a proof-of-principle experiment, we quantified the biodistribution and aggregation state of new cationic FNDs able to transport small interfering RNA inhibiting the oncogene responsible for Ewing sarcoma. Image analysis showed a low yield of nanodiamonds in the tumor after intravenous injection. Thus, for the in vivo efficacy assay we injected the nanomedicine into the tumor. Abstract

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation ground based observatory for gamma ray astronomy at very high energies. Employing more than 100 Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes in the northern and southern hemispheres, it was designed to reach unprecedented sensitivity and energy resolution. Understanding and correcting for systematic biases on the absolute energy scale and instrument response functions will be a crucial issue for the performance of CTA. The LUPM group and the Spanish/Italian/Slovenian collaboration are currently building two Raman LIDAR prototypes for the online atmospheric calibration along the line of sight of the CTA. Requirements for such a solution include the ability to characterize aerosol extinction at two wavelengths to distances of 30 km with an accuracy better than 5%, within time scales of about a minute, steering capabilities and close interaction with the CTA array control and data acquisition system as well as other auxiliary instruments. Our Raman LIDARs have design features that make them different from those used in atmospheric science and are characterized by large collecting mirrors (2.5 m2), liquid light guides that collect the light at the focal plane and transport it to the readout system, reduced acquisition time and highly precise Raman spectrometers. The Raman LIDARs will participate in a cross calibration and characterization campaign of the atmosphere at the CTA North site at La Palma, together with other site characterization instruments. After a one year test period there, an in depth evaluation of the solutions adopted by the two projects will lead to a final Raman LIDAR design proposal for both CTA sites.
