Review Essay von Thomas Honeggers Tweaking Things a Little. Essays on the Fantasy of J.R.R. Tolkien and G.R.R. Martin.

In response to Dr. Ada Long's (1945-2024) insistence that political conversation is key to teaching and service, both of which inform each other, the author contemplates the personal impact and evolving cultural import of Martin Heidegger. Using Heidegger's "Building Dwelling Thinking" (1971) as touchstone, the author reflects on the conception of humans as "near dwellers," or neighbors who "build" because they "dwell," and considers the weight this idea carried as a graduate student and again as an instructor of Advanced Composition. The author describes a teaching methodology that used Heidegger's essay as a lens through which students might view, read, or understand a cultural object, whether a text, a built thing, or a work of art. The author describes how newly released antisemitic writings by Heidegger have altered her estimations of him as a writer and thinker. Understanding this new knowledge underscores Long's contention that honors educators not only cannot avoid political conversation in the classroom, but that engaging in such conversation is crucial to the ethical enterprise that is honors education. The "Young, Restless, Reformed" movement has sought to establish itself upon reformational foundations rooted within the sixteenth century. The new movement's undertaking, however, has virtually ignored the differences between its own adherence to "limited atonement" and the developed theology of Martin Luther. Even on an academic level, the legacy of gratia universalis ensconced within confessional Lutheranism has been largely lost to the Reformed imagination. This article focuses upon relevant materials in Luther's Lectures on Galatians (1531/1535) and his Sermon on John 1:29 (1537), as well as the pertinent statements found within early Lutheran confessions. What emerges is a Lutheran tradition that espoused both "unconditional election" and a robust form of "unlimited atonement," a divine provision of redemption and satisfaction for all. In Lutheran theology, this provision in Christ extra nos serves as an objective foundation for confident faith. As contemporary Reformed scholars increasingly delve into the diversity of the Reformed tradition within early modernity, the distinctive Lutheran voice is another legacy worth remembering. Introduction: Office blood pressure (OBP) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) calculated by the Friedewald formula (F) are the cornerstones of the cardiovascular risk (CVR) assessment and management based on the SCORE2/SCORE2-OP model proposed by the 2021 ESC Guidelines on Cardiovascular Disease Prevention. Aim: We compared the CVR stratification estimated by the old SCORE and the SCORE2/SCORE2-OP using OBP and ambulatory blood pressure measurement (ABPM), and we evaluated the prevalence of LDL-C control, after calculating it using three validated equations, in outpatients referred for arterial hypertension. Methods: A cross-sectional study on 1539 consecutive patients with valid ABPM. LDL-C was calculated using the Friedewald formula (F), its modification by Martin (M), and the Sampson (S) equation. SCORE and SCORE2/SCORE2-OP were estimated using OBP, mean daytime (+ 5 mmHg adjustment), and mean 24-hour systolic blood pressure (+ 10 mmHg adjustment). Individual CVR by 2021 ESC Guidelines (and SCORE2/SCORE2-OP) was compared to the 2019 ESC/EAS Guidelines (and SCORE). Differences in the prevalence of LDL-C control according to the three methods to calculate LDL-C were also analysed. Results: Mean age was 60 ± 12 years, with male prevalence (54%). Mean LDL-C values were 118 ± 38 mg/dL (F), 119 ± 37 mg/dL (M), and 120 ± 38 mg/dL (S), respectively. Within the same population, SCORE and SCORE2/SCORE2-OP significantly varied, but no differences emerged after comparing the average SCORE2/SCORE2-OP calculated with OBP (6% IQR 3–10), mean 24-hour systolic BP (7% IQR 4–11), and mean daytime systolic BP (7% IQR 4–11). SCORE2/SCORE2-OP and 2021 ESC Guidelines reclassified the CVR independently of the method used for BP measurement. The low-moderate risk group decreased by 32%, whereas the high and veryhighrisk groups increased by 18% and 12%, respectively. We found a significant reduction in reaching the LDL-C goals regardless of the equation used to calculate it, except for those > 65 years, in whom results were confirmed only by using the M. Conclusion: SCORE2/SCORE2-OP and 2021 ESC Guidelines recommendations led to a non-negligible CVR reclassification and subsequent lack of LDL-C goal, regardless of estimating SCORE2 using OBP or ABPM. Deconstruction remained classical in the sense of its reliance on classical laws of thought, of which it remained the self-critique. With Nancy, however, the rejection of the classical laws of thought emerged. Anastasis is the other beginning that opens philosophy to the experiences covered over by the classical laws. The current article argues that Paul Mendes-Flohr's turn to address contemporary challenges faced by Jews at large, and Israeli Jews in particular, is proleptic in the sense that it excavates the anticipation of the current intellectual, spiritual and moral reality from the intellectual history of modern German−Jewish thought. Based on a reading of his recent book, Cultural Disjunctions: Post-Traditional Jewish Identities, the discussion shows how Mendes-Flohr's adaptation of Martin Buber's call to aspire to I−Thou relations supports proleptic historiography both as a historiographical methodology and as a moral act. This article investigates the radiofrequency (RF) induced heating in a pediatric whole-body voxel model with a high-density electroencephalogram (hd-EEG) net during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 3 T. A total of three cases were studied: no net (NoNet), a resistive hd-EEG (NeoNet), and a copper (CuNet) net. The maximum values of specific absorption rate averaged over 10g-mass (10gSAR) in the head were calculated; with the NeoNet, it was 12.51 W/kg and in the case of the NoNet it was 12.40 W/kg. In contrast, the CuNet case generated 17.04 W/Kg. Temperature simulations were conducted to determine the RF-induced heating without and with hd-EEG nets (NeoNet and CuNet) during an MRI scan using an age-corrected and thermoregulated perfusion for the child model. The results showed that the maximum temperature estimated in the child's head was 38.38 ˚C for the NoNet, 38.43 ˚C for the NeoNet, and 43.05 ˚C for the CuNet. In the case of NeoNet, the maximum temperature estimated in the child's head remained compliant with IEC 60601 for the MRI RF safety limit. However, the case of CuNet is estimated to exceed the RF safety limit, which may require an appropriate cooling period or a hardware design to suppress the RF-induced heating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Beginning in the Early Republic's first decades, American Protestants construed their new nation as Protestant. This conception led to evaluations of Martin Luther as a proto-American figure, with his Reformation anticipating the American Revolution. In response, Catholics began adapting the traditional apologetic readings of Luther by Cochlaeus and Bossuet, increasingly emphasizing the disastrous political and social effects of his actions. The 1817 Reformation Jubilee elicited anti-Luther works from American Jesuits Roger Baxter, Anthony Kohlmann, and John William Beschter. This approach continued into the 1820s and 1830s as American Protestants further asserted their notion of a proto-American Luther. Catholics refined their arguments to conceptualize the reformer as a friend to tyrants, an enemy of religious liberty, and an instigator of anarchy. These efforts became the basis of the more prominently studied Catholic apologetics in the 1840s and 1850s, especially Bishop Martin John Spalding and Orestes Brownson. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Martin Luther was an east German, a fact often overlooked or ignored. He was born and died in Eisleben, studied in Erfurt, and launched what would become the Reformation in Wittenberg, broadly dated with the posting of the Ninety-five Theses on the door of the Castle Church in 1517. He was sequestered as "Junker Jörg" in Eisenach, his mother's hometown, because of his refusal to recant his theology at the Diet of Worms (1521). While there (more precisely at the Wartburg), he translated the New Testament into German (1522). Luther used a form of middle German spoken in the Saxon court, which Luther claimed was the most widespread dialect. He used popular German, rather than scientific or academic German. By the end of the 1520s, over 10,000 copies of his translation of the New Testament had been sold throughout Germany. Also in eastern Germany, Luther and Philip Melanchthon composed the so-called Torgau Articles, the basis of the Augsburg Confession (1530), in Torgau, where Luther's wife, Katharina of Bora, is buried. The present study discusses resources on Luther's life and teaching within the geographical context of the former German Democratic Republic. This article addresses the contemporary use of Luther's theology of vocation as a theological script for meaning‐making. Lived experiences of modern work demonstrate that many social structures and constraints challenge the notion of vocation in its classic form. There are many reactions parents can have to the loss of children by gun violence. Of course, grief and disbelief are perhaps the most common. Seeking explanations for the loss is also an essential reaction. Most destructive is the need for revenge and retribution to the offending party. Much less common and less documented is parents who react to the loss of a child by violent death with compassion. I discuss the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer. Zimmerman was acquitted of the shooting even though Martin was unarmed and there was no clear evidence of an altercation. Trayvon Martin's parents reacted to the killing and the acquittal with compassion for other parents who have experienced loss and by becoming advocates against gun violence. Compassion and social justice were forged on Trayvon Martin's loss rather than revenge and hatred. An important lesson for all. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Start with an ordinary disposition ascription, like 'the wire is live' or 'the glass is fragile'. Lewis (Philos Quart 47:143–158, 1997) gives a canonical template for what he regards as the analysandum of such an ascription: "Something x is disposed at time t to give response r to stimulus s". For example, (*) the wire is disposed at noon to conduct electrical current when touched by a conductor. What Lewis calls "the simple conditional analysis" gives putatively necessary and sufficient conditions for the analysandum in terms of a counterfactual: "if x were to undergo stimulus s at time t, x would give response r". Call this the counterfactual analysans. For example: (Would-conduct) If the wire were to be touched by a conductor at noon, the wire would conduct electricity. So we have three things in play: (1) the ordinary disposition ascription (e.g. 'the wire is live'); (2) the canonical template (e.g. *) that is supposed to formalize this disposition ascription; and (3) the counterfactual analysans that is supposed to provided an analysis of the canonical template (e.g. Would-conduct). Finkish dispositions have been widely regarded as counterexamples to the adequacy of (3) as an analysis of (2). I will argue that they are not. They succeed, however, as counterexamples to the adequacy of (3) as an analysis of (1). That said, the classic cases are somewhat contrived. I will introduce the notion of a minkish disposition: a disposition that something has, even though it might not display it in response to the relevant stimulus. Cases of minkish dispositions are entirely familiar. They refute the adequacy of (3) both as an analysis of (2) and of (1). I will argue that they also refute Lewis's own, more complicated counterfactual analysis of dispositions, and bring out an internal tension in his views. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Yet we see how these women in their various ways blazed trails and as such became mentors and inspirations for generations of women practitioners who worked with them and followed in their footsteps. Review of Cuerpos en escena. Materialidad y cuerpo sexuado en Judith Butler y Paul B. Preciado.

This essay examines the phenomenon of cross-cultural Shakespearean “traffic” as an import/export “business” by analyzing the usefulness of the concept crosscultural through a series of theoretical binaries: Global vs. Local Shakespeares, Glocal and Intercultural Shakespeare; and the very definition of space and place within the Shakespearean lexicon. The essay argues that theoretically, the opposition of global and local Shakespeares has a tendency to collapse, and both glocal and intercultural Shakespeares are the object of serious critique. However, the project of cross-cultural Shakespeare is sustained by the dialectic between memorialization and forgetting that attends all attempts to record these cross-cultural experiences. The meaning of crosscultural Shakespeare lies in the interpreter’s agency.
