This article uses the concept of continuity of care to examine the implications of health-system restructuring for workers and staff in the BC home support system. Home support primarily serves frail seniors living in poverty and has the potential to provide assistance with tasks like bathing, dressing, and toileting, as well as offer social support and relational care to isolated clients. Through presentation of qualitative data from focus groups and interviews with home support workers and clients in the Greater Vancouver area, we demonstrate how the casualization and intensification of work in a context of increasing client acuity levels has diminished both continuity and quality of care. This article discusses how restructuring in the home support sector in BC has reduced the overall number of persons under care in the system, disrupted continuity of care, and compromised quality.

Explores the tension felt by young Canadian women between the desire for domesticity and the aspiration for economic independence. This tension is exacerbated by the dual messages sent by societal institutions (primarily school and the media) as well as economic and social change. (MJP)

Traffic safety is a contested public issue and highly negotiated practice that requires sociological analysis and systematic public policy attention. In our case study, we examine elementary school traffic safety programs in Vancouver, British Columbia. We illustrate how such programs assume a politics of responsibility that largely targets children and parents for traffic safekeeping within an institutional environment that gives programs only sporadic support and funding to manage traffic risks. While this context of school traffic safety programs helps to maintain an "illusion of safety," it does not challenge the current aute-dominant mobility structure and its inherent problems. La securite routiere constitue une question d&apos;interet public tres discutee, et ses pratiques fortement debattues exigent une analyse sociologique et l&apos;attention systematique des politiques publiques. Dans cette etude, les auteurs analysent les programmes de securite routiere dans les ecoles primaires de Vancouver, en Colombie-Britannique. The growing interest in automobility theory and feminist perspectives on daily mobility points to the importance of considering parental mobility care of children. Hanson (2010,Gender, Place & Culture17(1), 5–23) argues that feminists have long known that gender and mobility are bound together but have not sufficiently examined their contexts. The article extends this approach in its exploration of parental mobility care practices. It illustrates how automobility constructs disciplined parental practices to immobilize and safeguard children. Conversely, it shows how parental mobility care practices use, generate and resist automobility. These practices, the article argues, are deeply embedded within contexts of gender and automobility that (re)produce social inequalities. This analysis, which emerged out of our qualitative, interpretive approach, suggests new ways of thinking about automobility and parenting in relation to one another. Scholars recognize the importance of parental chauffeuring in urban environments, but pay remarkably little attention to how parents, as part of everyday, domestic practices, safeguard their children in auto-dominated streets. Based on in-depth, qualitative interviews with parents whose children attend public elementary schools, this exploratory study compares traffic safeguarding experiences on the east and west sides of Vancouver, British Columbia. The analysis shows how social class and gender intersect in three traffic sites: school streetscapes, school entrances, and school traffic safety volunteerism. Utilizing automobility and feminist theories, we argue that urban parental traffic safeguarding is a complex and variegated phenomenon involving unequal risks and responsibilities. Our analysis illustrates the ways in which parental traffic safeguarding is a lynchpin to the automobility system, particularly with respect to its illusion of safety, and how, conversely, this system shapes parenting by constituting traffic safeguarding as part of domestic responsibilities. The article discusses research which indicates that many parents in places such as Vancouver, British Columbia are using their automobiles less frequently and are engaging in additional biking, walking, and automobile-sharing activities with their children as of 2015. The mental stress that is associated with automobile driving is examined, along with boredom in children and Vancouver, British Columbia's SkyTrain transportation service. Low-income parents' attitudes are also assessed.
