We explore the media representation of the involvement of Fenerbahçe, a football club in Türkiye, in the 2011 Turkish Sports Corruption Scandal. Specifically, the study focuses on the discursive construction of Fenerbahçe's 'innocence' and 'corruption' through the central arguments of Fenerbahçe's self-defense and how the newsprint media represents these arguments of innocence in Türkiye. The data consist of the council board speech of the club's president after his release, the front-page headlines, and the news reports of Turkish daily newspapers featuring the speech. In the study, adopting the critical discourse analysis framework, we discuss that the newspapers either recontextualize the innocence arguments or set them aside to pursue their ideological stances. Besides, our analysis reveals that the newspapers ultimately ignore Fenerbahçe's arguments about the existence of a secret criminal organization endeavoring to gain control of Fenerbahçe via match-fixing claims and the state via a civil coup. The aim of this article is to analyze the news media discourse around menstruation in women’s sport by examining news media coverage of two tennis players, Heather Watson and Qinwen Zheng, who attributed their defeat in 2015 and 2022, respectively, to “girls’ things.” Using thematic analysis, the article analyses four themes: (1) breaking the menstrual taboo in sport, (2) specificity and marginalization of the female body, (3) the risk of a leaking body and (4) the wider context beyond the world of sport. The analyzed discourse is part of the broader changes observed since the mid-2010s regarding the greater presence of menstruation in public discourse. The most significant difference between the 2015 and 2022 corpora lies in the framing of menstruation as taboo. Whereas an open statement about menstruation in 2015 was perceived as something both brave and shocking, such discourse was practically absent in 2022. Despite this change, this discourse illustrates the tension between the public exposure of menstruation alongside efforts aimed at keeping it hidden. It can be read in the framework of neoliberal feminism by emphasizing the privileging of the male body and the current product-focused menstrual activism by highlighting the need to keep menstruation invisible. This study examined the role of digital content in shaping public opinion towards the Sudanese conflict in 2023, focusing on analyzing the content of news websites and social media pages, particularly Facebook and X. The study aimed to analyze the digital content presented about the conflict, identify the media frames used, measure the impact of this content on public attitudes, and determine the differences between various platforms in addressing the conflict. The study adopted a descriptive analytical approach, using content analysis of a sample of (3,000) posts on Facebook and X during the period from April to September 2023. A content analysis form was used as the primary tool for data collection, focusing on analyzing media frames, types of discourse, and information sources used in covering the conflict. Results showed that Facebook had higher engagement compared to X, with an average engagement of (487) on Facebook versus (193) on X. Coverage focused on the "power struggle" frame at (33.30%), followed by the "humanitarian crisis" frame at (22.40%). The study revealed a prevalence of hostile language in posts at (39.67%), reflecting the intensity of tension at the beginning of the conflict. Short posts (less than 50 words) dominated the content at (46.70%), indicating the audience's preference for concise and quick information. The findings indicated that official media sources were the most used at (30.03%), followed by eyewitness accounts at (21.50%), reflecting the importance of official and personal sources in shaping the media narrative during conflicts. The study also revealed fluctuations in the monthly growth rate of posts, with a sharp decline in August and September, indicating a correlation between posting and field developments of the conflict. Regarding strategies to influence public opinion, "evoking empathy" and "fear" were the most used at (35.77%) and (26.33%) respectively, confirming the role of emotions in guiding public opinion during crises. The results also showed that military leaders were the most mentioned in coverage at (28.53%), followed by politicians at (26.33%), reflecting the media focus on influential figures in the conflict. Based on these findings, the study presented several recommendations to improve media coverage of conflicts. It recommended developing balanced media frames that combine conflict analysis with highlighting humanitarian aspects, emphasizing the need to train journalists in using diverse frames to present a comprehensive picture of the conflict. It also suggested adopting communication strategies that combine emotional and rational discourse to achieve a balance in influencing the audience. The study emphasized the importance of developing digital content writing skills, focusing on conciseness without compromising meaning. It also recommended creating a specialized team for managing media crises, capable of quickly dealing with changes in political events and field developments. The study stressed the need to raise awareness about the impact of language on conflict, proposing the development of a guideline for responsible language in conflict coverage, and organizing periodic workshops on using constructive language that contributes to dialogue and peace-building. Furthermore, the study highlighted the need for a more balanced coverage of influential figures, recommending expanding coverage to include influential personalities from various fields such as civil society and academic experts. It suggested developing a diverse database of sources and influential figures to ensure comprehensive and balanced coverage of the conflict from all angles. In conclusion, this research provides valuable insights into the dynamics of digital media coverage during conflicts and offers practical recommendations for improving the quality and impact of such coverage. It underscores the critical role of digital content in shaping public opinion and the responsibility of media professionals in presenting balanced, accurate, and constructive narratives during times of crisis. AbstractThe Indo-Pacific context has gained increasing geopolitical focus over the last decade, and particularly over the last five years as powers such as the United States, Australia, the European Union (and three of its Member States – France, Germany and the Netherlands) have elaborated dedicated Indo-Pacific strategies. Underlying these has been a concern with the actions of China, defined through contested geopolitical discourses on its role as an actor in the region. While this contestation has been given some attention in academic literature, notably absent has been a consideration of the impact on regional states caught between these discursive tides, and particularly of the Pacific Island states (unsurprising, given the focus on the northern maritime arc that predominates in Indo-Pacific research). This article fills this gap through analysis of eight news media outlets (seven local and one regional) covering October–November 2019 and 2022, identifying the main discourses on China in Pacific media and their source, and examining the impact of these on local Pacific reporting. It finds that, notwithstanding the preponderance of ‘Western’ discourses on China’s role in Pacific media through republication of external media reporting, this does not translate into influence over Pacific reporting. The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic has affected fundamental aspects with ramifications on our coexistence, including the manner in which older people are perceived and how we interact with them. In this work, the researchers study how older people were represented by the media in the first year of the pandemic by analysing six of Spain's most widely read digital newspapers. To this end, the authors have studied whether journalists gave older people the means through which they, or their representative organizations, families, or healthcare workers could express themselves. Furthermore, the authors have also studied the imagery that readers have created of older people by analysing the readers comments section of news reports. A total of 1,278 textual units were obtained that include both journalistic pieces and readers comments. These units were processed qualitatively and quantitatively using categories of analysis pertaining to the imagery of older people, care homes, their health and quality of life, and critiques of actions taken by politicians. The conclusion drawn is that these newspapers did not adopt frames that adequately represent older people as individuals who are active and useful members of society, nor as a dynamic consumer group that activates the market and stimulates the economy. Research on femicide news revealed discriminatory narratives against the victims in specific cases and social contexts. This article uses a quantitative approach to analyze the news content that serves to create social representations of victims and perpetrators. We propose a methodology based on examining independent elements in the descriptions, identifying extratextual patterns, and providing the data to compare the social representations of intimate partner violence (IPV), familiar, and non-IPV femicides. Three online news outlets were analyzed from July 2014 to December 2017, creating a corpus of 2,527 articles. The results revealed that it is more common to create negative representations of victims than negative representations of the perpetrators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While the topic of migrant representation in media discourse has been extensively researched, a significant portion of scholarly attention is concentrated on Western media. This focus leaves a considerable gap in the study of media representations in transitional countries, particularly North African nations like Tunisia. This topic assumes greater significance in light of the recent surge in xenophobia towards sub-Saharan African migrants in the country – a movement partly instigated by President Kais Saied's anti-immigrant rhetoric. Utilising Corpus-Assisted Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this paper examines the discursive representations of sub-Saharan African migrants in Tunisian written media discourse, focusing on the 2022 and 2023 anti-migrant wave in Tunisia under the presidency of Kais Saied. The research findings reveal that while a glimpse of a humanitarian discourse was evident, the majority of the discourse was characterised either by biased neutrality or explicit prejudice. The research indicates a predominantly negative representation, categorising migrants as invaders, security threats, economic burdens, and moral hazards. Significantly, much of the discourse echoes the political anti-immigrant policy, suggesting a potential media alignment with the emerging authoritarian tendencies in Tunisia. This alignment harbours damaging implications for the safety and well-being of the migrant community, as well as for the overall human rights and democratisation process in the country. News organizations and journalists are important and influential actors in environmental politics. Their reporting on social and environmental issues often follows issue-attention cycles (IACs) that emphasize drama and problematization to maintain public interest. This study examined nearly 13 years of news coverage to understand the media discourse about the Critically Endangered North Atlantic right whale (NARW) and its conservation. Content analysis and critical discourse analysis were used to analyze 356 texts published in six large US newspapers between January 1, 2010 and March 15, 2023. NARW conservation and management received increased public attention and an IAC began in 2017 after an Unusual Mortality Event began, with 75 percent of the sampled articles (n = 267) published from 2017 on. The Boston Globe published a majority of the sampled texts (n = 209) and Globe reporter David Abel was the most prolific journalist with 50 bylines. The coverage featured six themes representing threats to the species, science and technological development, and tourism, local lifestyle, and culture. The most common topic was that of American lobster fishing gear and whale entanglements (n = 162, 45.5%). In that discourse journalists emphasized the political ecology of NARW conservation, focusing on disagreements between whale experts and advocates and commercial lobster fishermen and their allies as they sought to influence decision making by the National Marine Fisheries Service. Journalists presented the issue through a conflict frame and each group used distinct discursive strategies in an attempt to shape the discourse and public opinion related to new or stricter regulations for the commercial lobster fishery designed to reduce the risk of entanglement for NARWs. Findings suggest that this IAC related to NARW science and conservation has already moved through at least three of five key stages and will inevitably lose public interest, which has important implications for future communication and advocacy related to NARW conservation. This case study demonstrates the continued importance of media to conservation - as public forums for discussion, essential parts of organizational strategies for change, and as an externality that can influence conservation outcomes. This article focuses on denominations that are used to name people on the move in Belgian media discourse, but that are not specifically related to migration. It specifically studies the nominal syntagms formed with the noun people (people on the run, people in need) and words of kinship (mother, brother). A Discursive Semantics analysis implemented through Corpus Linguistics is run on a corpus of Belgian news items issued from March 2015 to July 2017. The corpus gathers 13,391 newspaper articles and 3490 TV news items (representing 7,637,986 words). The mention of words of kinship and designations formed with people shows that there is a willingness to humanise media discourses on migration. However, although their mention encourages a humanitarian vision of people on the move, these usually positively connotated designations also foster a vision of people on the move as victims and does not discourage the mention of controversial denominations. The article uses a descriptive-heuristic method. The author undertook a task of describing the nature of media linguistics as a subdiscipline of linguistics, as seen from her own perspective, as well as in the light of views of a number of other linguists. The discussion about the methodology of media linguistics presented in the paper comprises arguments in favour of distinguishing it from other subdisciplines on the basis of research methods, research objects, and objects of analysis. The author argues that the strongest evidence for the distinctness of media linguistics is media discourses and not the media themselves, as well as the multimodality of media texts. The aim of this study is to explore the media representation of tutoring as a phenomenon within pedagogical discourse. An analysis of a thematic corpus of texts reveals that the imported concept of TUTORING acquires new conceptual features that reflect the linguistic and cultural specificity of its interpretation in the Russian-speaking media landscape. Distinctive characteristics of the media representation of the conceptual education of TUTOR are established in comparison with traditional pedagogical professions and its definition in professional standards. It is demonstrated that in the Russian-speaking media discourse, tutoring is perceived by the professional discursive community as a profession of the future, tasked with shaping individuals capable of addressing the global challenges of modernity. Evaluative characteristics of the phenomenon of TUTORING are identified, reflecting its perception by both the professional discursive community and a broader readership. In the former case, positive evaluations prevail, characterized by notions of ‘assistance’ and ‘support’; in the latter, negative evaluative traits emerge, associated with skepticism towards tutoring. Figurative-perceptual characteristics of tutoring are presented, expressed through metaphorical strategies based on source domains such as “Sport,” “Journey,” and “Nature.” The study of the phenomenon of tutoring underscores the significance of the discursive factor in understanding the concept.

This study is devoted to the study of the implementation features of derivational mechanisms for modeling occasional vocabulary in the Russian-language media space. On the example of language units, which include the prepositive component de-, the semantic and grammatical features of occasional units implemented in the current media space are established. The material for the study was the texts of electronic newspapers, magazines, news agencies for the period from 2020 to the present, as well as forums, chats, blogs, political illustrations related to research topics. As a result of the study, a wide range of language units with a prepositive component de- was established, expanding their meaning in the texts of modern media. Thematic groups are identified and described, thematic groups organized by language units with the prepositive component de- are established, their contextual meaning and semantic-pragmatic features of implementation in the current media space are determined.

The article examines the issues of the non-equivalent vocabulary translation in the sphere of English political media discourse. Today, due to the processes of globalization and the expansion of the media space, the issues of translation of the non-equivalent language units in different spheres, including lexical units in the sphere of media discourse, become more and more relevant. Because of the rapid development of political relations between countries, new words appear in the media that may not have their exact equivalents in the target language, which becomes one of the most challenging tasks not only for the translator, but also for translation studies, lexicology, intercultural communication and other linguistic disciplines as a whole. The aim of this article is to consider the main problems and ways of translating the non-equivalent vocabulary of modern political topics, to analyze the linguistic and cultural characteristics of the translation of the non-equivalent vocabulary in the media discourse, and to draw conclusions about which translation techniques are the most common and adequate when translating the non-equivalent lexical units in the social and political texts of the media discourse. In order to achieve the aim in the article we have reviewed the existing classifications of the elements of the field of the non-equivalent vocabulary, provided the basic research terms, as well as analyzed the translation techniques, typical for the political texts of mass-media discourse. Having carried out a comprehensive analysis of the studied material, it is noted that if the lexical unit of a media discourse text belongs to the field of non-equivalent lexical units, the ways and the adequacy of its rendering is determined not only by lexical and grammatical transformations, but also by extralinguistic knowledge and the translator’s cultural grasp; the most difficult lexical elements for translation are political terms, jargon and emotive-evaluation vocabulary, the rendering of which is often determined by pragmatic aspect of the translation; the most common and adequate translation techniques were semantic development, compensation, descriptive translation, and contextual transposition.

Introduction. The article presents the results of the review of scientific works on discourse theory, reflecting the stages of evolution of media-political discourse in Russian linguistics. The aim of the article is to summarize, systematize and analyze approaches to the study of media-political discourse and concepts of its comprehension. Such concepts as media discourse, media text, media linguistics, and political discourse are considered.Methodology and sources. The article is prepared in the context of the cognitive-discursive paradigm, functional approach to discourse analysis, and media linguistics. In accordance with the postulates of critical discourse analysis, media-political discourse is considered as a constitutive of social practice. The main research method is an analytical scientific review of works on discourse theory.Results and discussion. In the course of the review of works on media and political discourse the main approaches to the understanding and research of media-political discourse are highlighted. The boundaries of this type of discourse as one of the areas of modern discourse theory are outlined. The concepts of scientific cognition that conditioned the formation of media-political discourse are identified. A review of works on related types of discourse at the previous stages of scientific thought is given. Internet discourse is viewed as an alternative source of political information. The article emphasizes the elements of language of enmity and the binary opposition “us/them” in the media-political discourse.Conclusion. The paper reveals a tendency to merge media discourse and political discourse within the framework of media-political discourse in modern linguistics. Among the key approaches to the study of media-political discourse the following approaches are identified: cratological, structural-communicative and media-technological ones; when analyzing the blogosphere it is advisable to refer to critical discourse analysis, structuralfunctional and comparative approaches. The most promising areas of the research include the identification of the essential characteristics of media-political discourse, and the development of genre stratification of this type of discourse.

The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the issue of intentionality in the educational Internet space and introduces the concept of “polyintentionality” as a specific characteristic of TED Talks media discourse. The aim of the article is to analyze the diversity of communicative intentions embedded in the content of educational media texts of TED Talks, including the analysis of the context types, communicative mechanisms and linguistic means that contribute to the achievement of different goals within a single speech. The authors introduce the concept of “polyintentionality” as a specific characteristic of TED Talks media discourse, distinguishing macrointentionality, which includes general goals and intentions of communicative acts, and microintentionality, which takes into account detailed intents in specific utterances. The paper pays attention to the general theoretical aspects that define ‘intention’ as an essential element shaping the speaker’s goals and motivation. The authors emphasize that video lectures on the TED platform, are characterized by heterogeneous intentionality of a complex nature. The authors distinguish four leading macrointentions in TED Talks texts: informing, persuading, inducing, inspiring and entertaining, each of which is realized through a variety of microintentions and linguistic means, both verbal and non-verbal. Based on a quantitative analysis of the verbal and non-verbal means used by TED speakers, the authors conclude that the discourse of TED Talks is polyintentional, with the predominance of the macrointention of informing. The authors note that the principle of polyintentionality underlying TED Talks allows speakers to effectively convey their ideas to the audience, motivate listeners and emphasize the importance of changes in life and education.

The present paper refers to the current problem of semiotic signs’ specifics in the context of gaming discourse based on texts from action first-person shooter game Ultrakill developed by Finnish creators. The problem is relevant due to the influence that computer games have on people’s mind – in particular on the minds of the younger generation. Moreover, the study will help to understand the linguistic mechanisms of the impact of video games on players. The study used methods of semantic analysis, semiotic analysis, observation and description techniques. As a result, the research revealed that developers use intertextual units to create patterns that are familiar to the player, but which at the same time have new characteristics. While 66% of all intertext is universally known, obscure allusions play an important role in creating associations for the recipient as well, which proves the importance of intertext in video game discourse. Well-known allusions play a role in creating semantic images in the game, while the lesser known intertext has easy to understand semes that could provoke the player to action in game. The research identified the following types of intertext: allusions to songs, music albums, other games, myths, the Bible and literature. The synthesis of intertext and author’s text in level names gives the player an idea of the upcoming challenges without informing of the level context, and in some cases even intriguing the player. The combination of borrowings and original semiotic units in the names of characters creates images that are familiar to the player, but at the same time, it creates properties that are specific to this particular game. Dialogues are mainly inherent in this genre, but the conversations also have deviations from this genre, which is also done in order to affect the player – the author gives the recipient a familiar behavior pattern in order to replace it afterewards, causing cognitive dissonance to the player. Conclusions are drawn about the discourse mechanisms in video games, how they affect the player and for what purpose the developer uses one or another linguistic technique.

One of the key components of the image of athletes is the media discourse. The media message reaching its recipients affects their perception of sport and people involved in it. This seems particularly important in the context of sports for people with disabilities due to a number of stereotypes attributed to people with disabilities in society. The image of para-athletes created in the media can have various consequences, and what largely determines them is the way media messages are formulated. The purpose of the following considerations is therefore to analyze sports articles with particular attention to the types of media used in writing about sports for people with disabilities. In the first part of the work, I wanted to present the specificity of parasport related to it, as well as the role played by the media in relation to the situation of para-athletes, including Paralympic athletes. Then, I described the research methods and tools that I used at the stage of analyzing press materials and selecting appropriate typologies. The last part contains the results of my analysis of press articles contained in 25 issues of “Przegląd Sportowy” from the period August 17, 2021–September 13, 2021, around the Paralympic Games in Tokyo on August 24, 2021–September 5, 2021.

The article considers the current issues of media communication on the Internet. The aim of the work is to identify self-centered markers in the speech of communicants on social networks. The educational component of self-centered communication on the Internet is determined. The role of self-centered markers in the English-language media environment is established based on the comments of Internet portal users. The study material was selected by taking a solid sample and is represented by texts of Internet communicants in English, containing the manifestation of egocentrism of Internet users. The set aim is achieved by using a set of such methods as lexical-semantic, grammatical, stylistic, linguasemiotic analysis, as well as elements of content, discursive, interpretive and quantitative analysis. The work identifies, describes, and illustrates examples of self-centered markers in the modern Internet environment at the lexical and grammatical levels, as well as in the stylistic aspect. It has been established that the main feature of self-centrism virtualization is information acceleration and effort savings. It was revealed that self-centers in English-language social networks resort to abbreviations of words and sentences, the creation of new words and phrases that replace entire sentences, the use of graphic signs, etc. A comprehensive analysis has shown that we can talk about the emergence of a global permanently transforming language of the egocentric of social networks, where each communicant changes and reorganizes the language for the convenience of self-expression, not caring about whether his communication partners will be able to understand it, but at the same time wanting to be noticed, noted and understood. In this regard, the educational aspect of the media discorse is implemented, which allows you by certain markers to fix and recognize the egocentric in the process of network media communication, and in accordance with this, build a process of interaction with him. The novelty of this study is to identify lexical, grammatical, stylistic self-centered markers in the speech of communicators on the Internet portals and popular social networks. In the future, it is possible to identify and compare the verbal features of self-centered markers in a network media resource in different linguacultures in educational perspective. It should be emphasized that this topic is promising in the study of the linguapragmatic aspect of the verbal actions of the egocentric on the Internet when expressing different emotions.

Among researchers and scholars of legal sciences, the issue of recognizing several crimes committed by Russia against Ukraine and its population as genocide is currently under discussion. Instead, at the level of media discourse, a number of researchers have determined that Russian propaganda discourse contains genocidal features (for example, M. Ryabchuk, T. Snyder). In particular, scientists take into account such strategies as denial of genocide as a strategy for committing genocide (S. Cohen, A. Jones), dehumanization and demonization (H. Stanton, B. Bahador), manipulative use of the term «genocide» by Russian propaganda (V. Romaniuk, O. Dudko, E. Fortuin). The purpose of the article is to determine the genocidal strategies regarding Ukraine in the Russian propaganda discourse based on their compliance with the ten stages of genocide developed by H. Stanton: 1. classification; 2. symbolization; 3. discrimination; 4. dehumanization; 5. organization; 6. polarization; 7. preparation; 8. persecution; 9. extermination; 10. denial. In the article, these stages are superimposed on the Russian propaganda media discourse and considered in the context of the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine. The compliance analysis was carried out based on the following criteria: intensity of hateful rhetoric, narrativization, and organization of the media system of the Russian Federation (level of state intervention in the agenda of information media resources). The case of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine on February 24, 2022, which was followed by mass killings of civilians, destruction of residential areas, and deprivation of living conditions of Ukrainians (such as shelling of energy infrastructure), was chosen for analysis. The article analyzes how the physical actions of the Russian Federation against Ukraine are reflected in the propaganda media discourse and how they correspond to the stages of committing genocide, according to H. Stanton. In particular, the stages of classification, symbolization, dehumanization, polarization, and extermination in the Russian propaganda discourse can be considered as a manifestation of hateful rhetoric of varying intensity by increasing it with each stage concerning a certain group. The stages of discrimination, preparation, persecution, and denial are mostly revealed at the level of narratives about Ukraine, and the stage of organization is revealed in the media system of the Russian Federation.

The media discourse on Russia's war in Ukraine heavily focuses on geopolitical and military explanations of this conflict, with Ukraine often serving as a metaphor for preserving European values. However, a discussion of what these values mean and how 'Europeanness' is experienced from the perspectives of everyday life on the war-torn territories is rare. This article addresses these questions through a reading of the Wartime Diary which Yevgenia Belorusets, a Ukrainian photographer and writer, started keeping on 24 February 2022. We focus on the private/public form of this diary which, while staging the author's intimate dialogue with herself, was published in 'foreign' languages (German and English), and incorporates both personal and other people's testimonies. Drawing on the diary and its remediations as installations, we suggest that these works create a 'chronotope of immediacy' by mediating the experiences of 'ordinary' people. As such, they do not only enable readers/viewers from outside of Ukraine to follow the daily rhythms of life during war but also implicate each individual (and particularly each European, given the place of the publications and exhibitions) into the events. This paper presents an empirical corpus-based study on the identity of left-behind children in China, employing the discourse-historical approach (DHA) framework. It is the first study to combine Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling and reported speech analysis to examine how China Daily constructs the identity of left-behind children and explore the cultural and rhetorical factors influencing this identity construction. By integrating computational techniques and qualitative analysis methods, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of the intricate nature of identity construction for left-behind children. This interdisciplinary approach strengthens the theoretical foundations of media analysis and offers fresh insights into the dynamics of media discourse. The findings reveal that China Daily portrays left-behind children in a multifaceted and diverse manner, encompassing both positive and negative aspects, while placing emphasis on their vulnerability and passivity. Furthermore, the media employs communication techniques such as identification by sympathy, antithesis, and inaccuracy to establish emotional resonance and foster audience identification, ultimately influencing the audience's perspectives on these children. This case study demonstrates identification, explicitation, and validation of the implicatures found in the Kommersant (Russia) Telegram channel posts. It explores the primary reasons for Kommersant's implicature use and the language means employed for the creation of the implicature. The contributors to the Kommersant Telegram channel use irony/sarcasm, creative neologisms, wordplay, metaphors, and legally imposed euphemisms for the expression of the implicit meaning. The use of implicatures is mainly motivated by the authors' desire for self-protection and cooperation. Kommersant's implicit language also contributes towards the creation of a circle of loyal readers who may enjoy explicitating the implicatures so as to feel they belong to a specific socio-political group. The multi-stage perceptual analysis substantiates the assumption that readers with prior knowledge of Kommersant's style are more sensitive to its implicatures. The report also concludes that at times of rigid war-time media regulation in Russia, Kommersant's reporters use a code of implicit expressions as a means to preserve a certain objectivity in their reporting and to maintain their loyal readership. Previous academic research has argued that videogames are represented as violent in the media, and that these representations provide a justification to study videogames as a social object. However, little systematic research has been done to confirm whether such representations occur frequently, or whether this is a non-representative assumption based on a small number of news stories. Through using methods associated with Modern-Diachronic Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies (md-cads), we explore two corpora of newspaper articles from the British press containing references to videogames: one contains data from 2000 and the other from 2020. We find that whilst newspapers do represent videogames as promoting violence, these representations occur much more frequently in 2000 than in 2020, and that in 2020 this idea is more regularly challenged. Furthermore, in 2020 there is a greater focus on the benefit of videogames for the economy compared to 2000. Since its release, the music album "Shan Ge Liao Zai" has consistently garnered high streaming numbers and has gained both domestic and international popularity through media coverage. Acting as a form of musical discourse conveyed through mass media channels, the album becomes imperative to dissect the factors contributing to its widespread dissemination from the lens of media discourse. In the meaning production phase of media discourse of "Shan Ge Liao Zai", the authors of the music album engage in the selection of topics and employ rhetorical strategies to meaning production and meaning reproduction. These topics are intricately linked to personal narratives, societal issues, and broader human experiences. Rhetorical devices such as personification, metaphor, and allusion enhance the interpretability of the lyrics. During the reproduction phase of the media discourse meaning of "Shan Ge Liao Zai", various entities reproduce meaning by selecting and interpreting the discourse. Commercial media integrate it into popular discourse for multifaceted analysis, mainstream media incorporate it into national discourse for cultural interpretation, expert media elucidate it from an elite perspective, and media from Southeast Asia contextualize it within the framework of international discourse for politicized interpretation. From the production to the meaning reproduction of discourse, creators and participants collaboratively encode and decode "Shan Ge Liao Zai". Within this cycle of encoding and decoding, new layers of discourse meaning continuously emerge, thereby enriching the scope and the breadth of dissemination of "Shan Ge Liao Zai". The research aims to explore and compare the framing of the disruptive innovation phenomenon by the business media and the academic literature. For this purpose, 1160 news articles available on the Factiva database and 228 academic papers published in the Web of Science in the last 20 years were content analysed through an automated text-mining method. The results revealed that the representation of the disruptive innovation phenomenon in the news media diverges with the academic discourse despite the common vocabulary. While researchers describe disruptive innovation as a process/business model involving an improved performance, the media has not yet evolved from the technology-based perspective. Also, the media tends to focus on the features of the disruptive products and services but fails to discuss their value to the market. The framing of the social side of disruptive innovation also differs. The study offers three contributions: (i) it reveals the main concepts representing the term 'disruptive innovation' in the media and scholar discourse, (ii) it suggests future academic research avenues based on media interest and (iii) it emphasises media coverage gaps stemming from its failure to communicate the advances in the academic research on disruptive innovation. The article is devoted to the study of the value conflict, which has a verbal embodiment, and in some cases it is impossible to distinguish it from a communicative (verbal, linguistic) conflict. The purpose of the article is to study the verbal embodiment of value conflict in the categories of linguoecology. Modern media abound with information about conflicts and serve as a platform for the struggle of some values with others. Common communicative benefit is that, when verbalizing conflict, the techniques of rhetorical argumentation prevail over dysphemization and invectives. All of the above determines the relevance of the article. Different linguistic units used in media discourse are considered as representatives of the conflict. For the first time, the article describes the means of representing axiological marked conflict in media space, taking into consideration the linguistic and pragmatic potential of units of different levels and its representation in media texts of different genres. Such a description contributes to the formation of skills for confident recognition of not only value problematics, but also the means of its representation in media texts, and as a result, the skills and abilities to create relevant professional media texts, diagnose media texts causing and reflecting axiologically marked, significant for linguistic culture conflicts. The novelty also lies in the study of standard and substandard units, neutral and expressive, nominative and tropeic ones, in common media text space, which can also contribute and determine the media education result, for example in creating impactful vivid media texts with an updated pragmatic effect. Media education and media literacy are mutually complementary. Predicting the language unit conflictogenicity in the media and skills to avoid it increase media literacy which is necessary for protection against cyberbullying, online fraud and other types of Internet threats. The empirical material is traditional media texts of topical issues related to different genres, posted on the official websites of media. Stigma has grown in importance as a concept for understanding consumer behaviour during crises and gaining insights into post-pandemic food and travel intentions. While previous studies examined stigma from the perspective of stigmatised individuals, the current study investigated stigma from the perspective of other societies and their willingness to visit stigmatised countries or dine at stigmatised restaurants. The main aim of the current paper was to analyze the effect of stigma associated with COVID-19 on travel intentions to stigmatised countries and food avoidance at stigmatised restaurants. It also examined the effect of media discourse on stigma. A number of 593 questionnaires from Egyptians and structural equation modelling (SEM) were used to test the model. The findings showed that stigma associated with COVID-19 has a significant and negative effect on travel intentions to stigmatised countries, while stigma has a significant and positive effect on avoiding dining at stigmatised restaurants. Additionally, media discourse significantly contributes to the stigma associated with COVID-19. On the other hand, there was no significant impact of food avoidance at stigmatised restaurants on the intention to travel to stigmatised countries. COVID-19-related discrimination and stigma must be stopped, and the media should enhance awareness without raising anxiety. The paper presents the conception of dynamics of media stereotyping that comprises emergence, functioning, disappearance or return of sociocultural stereotypes in American media discourse. Dynamics of media stereotyping is a cognitive and linguistic process, stimulated by social, cultural and media factors. A sociocultural stereotype is defined in our work as a verbalized cognitive structure that represents simplified and conventional image of an individual, a group or a phenomenon of a particular social environment. Sociocultural stereotypes are formed in the process of evaluative categorization, which is a mental process of dividing social phenomena, groups, and individuals into categories in compliance with national ideals, cultural values and social standards. Media discourse is the domain in which sociocultural stereotypes are formed and changed. Linguistic representations of sociocultural stereotypes reflect their changes that comprise evaluative variation, content modification, activation or inactivation due to lack of new information about the referents of stereotypes in media discourse. Inactivation leads to disappearance or reinterpretation of sociocultural stereotypes of American media discourse. Reappearance of a vanished sociocultural stereotype is defined in the paper as iteration. В исследовании рассматриваются медиадискурсы Англии, Италии, Германии и Швейцарии, что позволяет выявить как общие, так и специфические лингвистические стратегии, применяемые в этих странах для создания образа России. Основное внимание уделяется таким приемам, как метафоры и использование определенных ключевых слов и фраз. Результаты исследования подчеркивают влияние культурных, исторических и политических факторов на формирование образа России в западном медийном пространстве. Это исследование также указывает на необходимость критического анализа медийных материалов, чтобы понять, каким образом данные лингвистические приемы влияют на общественное восприятие России на международной арене. Полученные данные могут быть полезны для дальнейшего изучения и понимания роли СМИ в создании национальных образов.

The subject of the study is the linguistic means of expressing negative assessments in media discourse.The purpose of this article is to trace the impact on the consciousness of society of linguistic means of displaying negative assessments of political and social events, as well as politicians. The article is also aimed at proving the fact that the use of a number of means of negative assessment, categorical formulations, emotionally charged language and even insults, despite all this, the placement of this information in the electronic editions of German information and political magazines and newspapers indicates a deliberate intention to create a negative image of some countries and their politicians.This study was conducted using texts from Internet news sites and electronic versions of well-known printed German newspapers, such as “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, “Stern” et al.

The article deals with the techniques of building a dialogue in the interview genre that encourage the interlocutor to be sincere. The intrusion of a journalist into the addressee’s private space, as well as the interviewee’s expression of their own identity through answers to “uncomfortable” questions can be considered as the discursive indicators for determining whether a text belongs to the tendency of “new sincerity” described in the present paper. The material of the study includes text fragments from the interviews of the Russian journalists with famous cultural figures and politicians published in the media or posted on the Internet platforms within the period of 2018–2023. It has been established that in order to determine the markers of “new sincerity” in the genre of a journalistic interview, one should consider the following essential discursive characteristics: thematic variety, methods of requesting (finding out) information by a journalist, the interlocutor’s reaction to a question that is on the borderline between public and private communication, techniques of euphemization and implication/explication of taboo meanings. “New sincerity” is found, first of all, in the expanded zone of thematic freedom acceptable in public communication. The main topics discussed in journalistic interviews, which reveal this trend (finances, health, appearance, etc.) are described in the article. The subject of the study is various methods of stimulating the “confessional” statement of the interlocutor and their latter’s reaction to violations of the acceptable boundaries of sincerity in public communication. The study also reveals metalinguistic markers of “new sincerity” that represent the strategies of speech behavior of both the journalist and their interlocutor. The results of the study show that “new sincerity” is becoming a technology that is used in mass media as a tool to influence the audience; thereby it shapes the communicative culture of the society in the public space.

Introduction. The relevance of the work is due to the interest of linguistics in the issues of discursive mediatization of socially significant phenomena in the English-language media, in particular environmental safety as the most important value of modern society. The scientific novelty of the study lies in establishing the content of the value “environmental safety” on the basis of systematization and quantification of semantic fields that are correlated with the main topics that determine the interpretation of this socially significant phenomenon in the British media and form a discourse-based thesaurus of its representation. Methodology and sources. The paper used corpus linguistics methods and the interpretative method of discourse analysis. The empirical basis of the study was a corpus of media texts of high-quality and popular media devoted to environmental safety issues, the corpus size was more than 200 thousand words. Results and discussion. Based on corpus analysis, semantic fields were identified that represent the concept under study in the high-quality and popular British press. It is shown that in the media narratives of the British media, ES is closely associated with climate change and global warming. It was revealed that the dominant topics in narratives about environmental security in both types of media are: 1) the environment; 2) science; 3) politics. A comparative analysis of the semantic fields showed the predominance of the semantic field “science” in high-quality media, which indicates rational and logical strategies for influencing a wide readership. In the texts of popular media, the semantic field “politics” dominates, which indicates the politicization of the discourse of environmental safety and indicates a strategy of emotional impact on the addressee. Both corpora emphasize the issues of climate change, related to unfavourable weather conditions and extremely high temperatures, however, high-quality press texts mention temperature anomalies much more often, which indicates an attempt to arouse public concern about the existing threat and encourage the adoption of necessary measures. Conclusion. The proposed methodology can be used in analyzing the specifics of other media discursive practices in terms of their discursive-textual organization, in studying the rhetorical, pragmatic and linguocultural organization of environmental safety discourse in sociocultural and ideological perspectives.

The article explores the methods of manipulation of consciousness in the mass media on the example of content analysis of Kazakhstan Russian-language sources. The authors reveal the concept of manipulation. Media manipulation is carried out at different levels - informational and emotionally expressive according to the two leading functions of the media language: information and impact. In accordance with this, the manipulation is realised at the level of information or expression. Examples of information manipulation through the expansion of information about the described object by including additional, metacommunicative and modified information are given. Another level of manipulation in the media is emotional and expressive influence. Such manipulation is based on labelling, appealing to authority, the interests of ordinary people, appealing to values, traditions, the use of associative binding, false comparisons, false alternatives, exploitation of slogans, conspiracy theories, myths, ridicule and other techniques. According to the authors, the use of media manipulation techniques generates cognitive tension when understanding additional meaning, which leads to a change in the attitude, evaluation and emotional perception of information on the part of the audience.

The Spanish autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla have long been sites of undocumented migration to Spain. Owing to both anti-immigration attitudes often perpetuated in political discourse and the challenges involved in blocking migration in cities that are geographically separated from Spain’s mainland, this migratory context has been heavily debated in Spain. However, it is critical to examine attitudes towards migrant populations of different legal statuses, and particularly essential to look at widely disseminated discourse such as mass media, which has the power to be impactful in shaping popular opinions. In this study, I analyse such discourse, and examine how migrants are represented in Spanish media. Using critical discourse analysis (Fairclough 2003) and media framing (Littlejohn, Foss, and Oetzel [2021]. “The Medium.” In Theories of Human Communication, 151–154. Waveland Press), this study looks at 100 online news articles published over a 10-year period (2013–2022). As scholars in the fields of political science, media research, and social psychology endeavor to understand crucial aspects of emotionality in the media, there is a growing need to methodologically address the communicative and discursive aspects of affective constructions in media texts. This article argues that by breaking down mediated emotional experiences represented through language in a set of identifiable elements, such as subject, emotion type, valence, intensity, proposed action, and object, those experiences could be used as workable and potent units of analysis when studying discursive and ideological media constructs of emotionality. By connecting insights from emotion science, the sociology of emotions, and media sociology, the qualitative method outlined, Emotional Experience Profiling (EEP), provides a flexible research tool conducive to an understanding of how emotional experiences represented through language in media texts are constructed and how they shape political discourse, identity, and emotional cultures. To demonstrate and illustrate the application of the method, the article provides examples from a pilot study which explores the research question: How do emotional experiences featured in Swedish far-right alternative news media construct and articulate political discourse? In September 2015, all UN member states enacted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the 2030 Agenda. It is a universal call to acion to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of people around the world. This paper aims to determine the most relevant characterisics of the discourse around this plan, which has been offered by the seven digital newspapers with the highest readership in Spain during the eight years following the enactment of the iniiaive. On the one hand, a staisical analysis has been carried out of the number of pieces of informaion disseminated, as well as of the eniies, industries, regions, themes and people or public agents most menioned. On the other hand, a computerised linguisic corpus analysis was carried out, showing the main word associaions made by each newspaper masthead and the length of the respecive journalisic pieces. The main results reveal a generalised increase in the number of news items, especially from 2020 onwards. Furthermore, there is a clear prominence of the social dimension of sustainability and sustainable development, in contrast to the scarce relevance of the ecological and environmental aspect in most of the digital newspapers. It is concluded that the Spanish press discourse on the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda is heterogeneous and, furthermore, that there is currently no example that fully complies with the values of sustainable journalism. Through a media discourse analysis, this study draws upon quantitative and qualitative data to gain insights into how new food categories are made and negotiated through mainstream and social media. The focus is on alternative proteins, a growing food sector largely driven by the current unsustainable industrial animal farming. Plant-based meats have long existed as alternative sources to meat, and insects have been historically eaten in parts of the world; yet, the crisis of climate change and increasing sophistication of technology have spurred the development of innovations like cultivated meat, microalgae, and fermentation protein. To better understand how food categories are redefined, this study focuses on Singapore media and its framing of these foods, considered novel here for their potential to revolutionize future food sources by how they are made and/or consumed. Shifting from meat consumption is critical for future dietary evolution. Mainstream newspapers and social media are the leading platforms for expressing this opinion. By analysing the media discourse, the proponents of the shift from meat, to plant-based meat and cultured meat were identified. The objectives were: a) to identify themes, word frequencies, and sentiment related to meat substitutes, b) to determine Chinese perceptions of the two meat substitutes, and c) to determine which food functions are of concern to Chinese consumers. Between July 2016 and July 2022, the researcher gathered data from People's Daily and China Daily online outlets and user comments. 574 news articles and 2,345 online comments were extracted. Three techniques were applied: sentiment analysis, thematic analysis, and word cloud analysis. The results revealed that newspapers reported positively on meat substitutes, yet user comments showed negative public perception. Chinese people held positive attitudes toward plant-based meat and negative attitudes toward cultured meat. Thus, the insights from the media discourse provided valuable indicators for stakeholders to develop sustainable food education and consumption strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
